It Takes a Certain Strategy to Remain Relevant on 'Real Housewives'

Being able to deliver drama on Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise is not as easy as it looks.

The Big Picture

  • Crystal Kung Minkoff exits RHOBH after 3 seasons, suggesting she was not invited back, leaving fans speculating.
  • Annemarie Wiley was also cut from RHOBH after the Season 13 reunion, emphasizing the show's demand for drama and authenticity.
  • Kyle Richards struggles with separation from RHOBH castmates, underscoring the pressure to reveal personal life details on reality TV show.

Fans of 'The Real Housewives' franchise are accustomed to witnessing housewives bickering about their storylines, often questioning, "Is that your storyline?" while dismissing the forced narratives of their castmates. It's an open secret that participants in one of TV's most popular reality shows must deliver the drama or face being shown the door. Such was the fate of Crystal Kung Minkoff from " The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. " After three seasons, Crystal disclosed that she would not be returning for Season 14. Though she didn't explicitly state, "I was fired," it was widely understood that Minkoff did not depart of her own free will.

Crystal broke the news of her departure via an Instagram video on Monday. " I just wanted to share the news that I will not be returning to film Season 14 of 'The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills .' It's a bittersweet moment for me. Never in a million years did I imagine I would be invited to join this show, let alone film it for three seasons." She added, “Every single year I was asked back, it was a blessing. It was an honor. Being the first Asian American on Beverly Hills was a lot of weight on my shoulders that I have since just have really understood the magnitude of what that means for people.”

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

A reality series that follows some of the most affluent women in the country as they enjoy the lavish lifestyle that only Beverly Hills can provide.

RHOBH Closes Door on Annemarie Wiley

She isn't the sole departure from RHOBH. Annemarie Wiley also won't be returning, having been let go immediately after the Season 13 reunion. Expressing her disappointment online, she posted: "I just got word today that I will not be returning to 'The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.' To say that I'm disappointed is an understatement." Wiley's heartbreak is understandable. Being a cast member of the Real Housewives franchise not only brings fame and celebrity status, but also a generous salary. However, to reap those benefits, one must deliver. Wiley made efforts to do so by engaging in petty drama with other cast members, notably Sutton Stracke and Crystal. When Sutton attributed her lack of eating to an esophagus issue, a "disorder" causing choking when swallowing food, Annemarie, 41, questioned it, citing her background as a nurse anesthesiologist.

Crystal conducted research and alleged that Annemarie's credentials weren't as claimed, a claim later supported by the American Society of Anesthesiologists. They even released a statement affirming that she misrepresented her qualifications. This essentially encapsulates the "storylines" brought by those castmates, which evidently fell short. While producers seek drama and conflicts among the housewives, they also expect glimpses into their personal lives on camera. Crystal and Annemarie portrayed almost idyllic family lives, which might not be as captivating as the tumultuous experiences of Kyle Richards and Erika Jayne

Andy Cohen Disagrees With a Reality TV Union

Kyle richards provides compelling storylines.

Kyle has provided compelling storylines from the outset: sibling feuds, accusations against her former close friend Lisa Vanderpump , and now her high-profile divorce from her husband of 27 years, Mauricio Umansky , along with her close friendship with singer Morgan Wade . Some of her fellow castmates were surprised by the news of her separation, feeling she hadn't shared it with them or on camera. Dorit Kemsley and Sutton, in particular, felt hurt not only because they considered themselves close friends of Kyle's but also because they believed she hadn't fulfilled her role as a housewife by sharing all aspects of her life. In response, Kyle sarcastically remarked, “Oh, I’m sorry you didn’t think it was enough information. It just had started. I was just figuring it out myself. And what makes you so entitled to think that you are owed an explanation of everything that’s going on in my bedroom?”

Sutton replied: “We all share what’s going on in our lives. Every one of us.” Being a housewife on the show isn't always a glamorous and carefree experience. It entails much more than just enjoyable girl trips (all funded by the show) and extravagant dinners and parties. It requires participants to expose every aspect of their lives in front of the camera. They must disclose family problems, dynamics with their spouses, relationships with friends, and confront personal issues such as alcoholism, eating disorders, legal troubles, and more. This raw authenticity is what makes the show so compelling , leading figures like Teresa Giudice , Melissa Gorga , and Erika Jayne , among others, to be invited back year after year. Their legal battles and family drama provide ample material to keep fans entertained and engaged.

Melissa and Teresa Continue Filming Together

In the upcoming Season 14 of " The Real Housewives of New Jersey ," set to premiere on May 5, Teresa and Melissa will face significant challenges. The sisters-in-law are currently not on speaking terms, openly expressing their animosity towards each other. However, neither is willing to step out of the spotlight. Consequently, they will continue appearing on the show, with producers hoping that their feud will eventually escalate into captivating drama once again.

Certainly, there's a threshold for what constitutes acceptable drama on the show. When a cast member brings excessive toxicity and maintains poor relationships with all others, they too may find themselves shown the door. This has occurred several times in the past, with one of the most memorable exits being Lisa Rinna 's departure after an eight-year run. Although it was officially stated that Bravo and Rinna had mutually agreed she would not return to RHOBH, speculation arose that she was let go due to fan backlash against her confrontations, particularly with Kathy Hilton and Sutton, and in previous seasons, with Denise Richards . It might very well be that some housewives refused to continue working with her.

Dorinda Clashed With Castmates

It appeared that Rinna had embraced the role of the show's antagonist to an extreme degree, leading to her behavior becoming unsustainable. This pattern seems like a trap for some housewives who lack sufficient personal drama to create engaging storylines. They may resort to manufacturing conflict on the show in a bid to remain relevant. Unfortunately, this forced drama often leads to their dismissal. Dorinda Medley, for instance, exhibited such viciousness towards her castmates that it became uncomfortable to watch. Medley, who was depicted as intoxicated on the show, frequently clashed with Luann de Lesseps and Tinsley Mortimer . She never addressed her issues with alcohol and was eventually removed, presumably after the other housewives and producers deemed her behavior unacceptable. Another housewives who was fired after bringing too much drama and toxicity was Danielle Staub .

Danielle was fired from RHONJ after season 2. She was involved in one of the most memorable Bravo moments when Teresa flipped the table on her and called her some explicit words. After she made peace with Teresa, she was asked to return a few seasons later, but it didn’t last long. Danielle didn’t understand the fine line between drama and too much drama when she pulled Margaret Josephs hair in a store. Margaret says that no one wanted to film with her after that and said that Danielle is “So unstable”.

Delving into the realm of reality television, particularly within "The Real Housewives" franchise , reveals a unique conundrum faced by its participants: the constant pressure to generate drama and unveil intimate aspects of their lives for the entertainment of viewers. This exposure often demands a level of vulnerability that can be uncomfortable, as it lays bare not only personal struggles but also relationships and demands your family members to expose their lives too. The desire to remain relevant in the ever-evolving landscape of reality TV sometimes leads cast members to share more than they would prefer, sacrificing privacy for the sake of maintaining their status within the show. In essence, being a part of this world means navigating a delicate balance between authenticity and performance, as participants grapple with the demands of creating compelling narratives while also preserving their own boundaries and dignity. The Real Housewives of New Jersey

essay on real housewives

It’s time for my favorite annual Real Housewives event, Dolores’s charity softball game where the whole cast gets together, puts their blood feuds aside for one day, and plays against the doctors and nurses of Maimonides Medical Center to raise money for breast cancer treatments. But those blood feuds, they didn’t really set them aside this year. This show has become all about teams, all about sides. Why not tell the doctors and nurses to sit this one out and have Team Teresa take on Team Melissa with Dolo serving as the umpire. That’s what we get on the show anyway, but at least this way Luis and Joe Gorga would be motivated to really whack the crap out of that ball.

Before we can even get to the game, Rachel sits down with Jenf to talk about the single, solitary conversation that Jenf had with Teresa that sent their strangely intimate friendship into a tailspin. Jenf, wearing a denim jumpsuit from the Eileen Davidson collection, doesn’t understand why Rachel is upset. I understand why Rachel is mad on an intellectual level — because Jenf is talking to Teresa, who did horrible things to Rachel and her husband — but certainly not on an emotional level. Their friendship seems strangely intense in a way that we haven’t really clocked as viewers so it’s hard to believe that Rachel felt such a betrayal that she’s crying in a strip mall coffee shop.

Jenf says she thought her conversation with Teresa was a victory because she could advocate for Rachel and John. I didn’t really see that happening either, but it’s nice for Jenf to attempt it. The conversation over delicious-looking French toast bites wraps up with Rachel saying that Jenf should remove herself from the situation between the Fudas and the Ruelases, which seems like an excellent idea. What I don’t understand is that Rachel keeps saying she doesn’t care who Jenf is friends with but, as Jenf tells us, she really does care. Then say it! Let it be known: “You can’t be friends with me if you’re friends with Teresa.” Just make it plain, stop trying to manipulate Jenf into doing what you want her to do.

Rachel is not attending Jen Aydin’s party for her dog Biscuit’s first birthday. I love all the stupid pretenses for events that the Housewives have, but nothing tickles me more than a pet birthday. The only thing better is a pet wedding, and I don’t see why they couldn’t have gotten one of Dolores’s 10 dogs to marry Biscuit. Half of Dolores’s dogs are named after foods anyway — Chicken, Bagel, Potato, Banana — those all sound like great combos. I fucking love fried chicken on a biscuit so I definitely support this union both spiritually and culinarily.

Teresa brings not only her dog Bella but also her daughter Gia, who has been going out with the same guy for five years and thinks she might be getting engaged soon. Then she drops the biggest bomb of the whole episode: her boyfriend works for Luis. Oh, no no no no no no no no no no. This is a bad idea. This is the worst idea. This is an idea even worse than an eject button in a helicopter or inviting Olivia Wilde to Florence Pugh’s birthday party . Even if this ends in the best possible scenario it is still going to be terrible. No one can even tell us what Luis’s business is. Do we think Gia’s intended can? Can he answer questions? ’Cause if he can’t answer ours, I have a feeling he might be answering the Feds’ questions in short order.

Anyway, at the party, someone asks Jen why Danielle isn’t there and Jen says, “She’s in the Dominican, but my friend Lina is here. Take it away, Lina!” She then cues up Lina telling a story about Danielle being rude to her. The gist is that Danielle held a charity event and Lina, a friend of the ladies who also does their hair, prepped Danielle for the event. At the afterparty, Lina didn’t have a VIP bracelet so Danielle had her thrown out of the VIP section. And after she did her hair! The horror! The humanity!

Yes, this sounds a little shitty, but like the kind of diva fit that nearly any of these women could pull at any minute (minus Dolores, who would never ). But the question is why Jen is bringing this up on camera and inviting Lina to do it because, as she tells us, she didn’t want it coming from her. This is the dirtiest kind of pool, where Jen wants it on camera but also wants to distance herself from it. “Well, I’m not the one who said it,” Jen will rationalize later when it inevitably gets back to Danielle that the story was told. The irony is, this is the exact same game Jen played with Danielle last season about the cheating rumors with Melissa that Danielle is mad about.

My favorite part of the dog party, however, is when Jen says that she invited Margaret. Teresa says, “Which dog was Joe Benigno going to bring, Margaret or his real dog.” This pre-written dig fell flatter than Gia Giudice’s singing on her famous track . This is what I can’t stand about Teresa. Both Melissa and Marge have said on camera they don’t want to talk about Teresa and haven’t really said anything about her, but here is Teresa lobbing the lamest of insults at the two of them every chance she gets, dragging this whole enterprise down to her level. If there is a low road Teresa will choose it every time, but will also get herself a cartoonish boring vehicle with a giant conical screw at the front to tunnel right underneath that low road. It’s a race to the center of the earth with this one.

Then they’re talking about whether Luis and John Fuda will be able to coexist at the softball game, and they recommend that the guys talk at the game. Gia says she doesn’t want people getting up in their business while they talk so they collectively agree the guys can have a bit of time alone in the locker room to hash it out. Um, isn’t this what John Fuda proposed they do at Jenf’s surprise party and Luis was so scared that he invented a business meeting in Florida to get out of it? Now that it’s Teresa’s idea she thinks it’s brilliant.

When Teresa brings this up to Luis he says that the only conversation that he and John can have is one where someone apologizes (Luis does not make it clear who) and they shake hands and move on. Um, this is insane. He thinks they’re just going to get over their issues? He thinks he’s not going to have to explain his actions or take accountability for them? By setting up this framework that is definitely not going to happen he’s already declared himself the victor in his own mind, so when John wants to actually express himself Luis can say he broke this unspoken contract and look like the good guy. Then Luis says, “I don’t start fights, but I’ll finish this one.” Oh Jesus. This red-faced taint sniffer. I can’t. He’s so horrible. Looking at his face is like looking at a Ouija board made of scabs and animosity and the only future that you see is one of absolute destruction.

Now it’s time for the softball game and John and Luis never have their talk, which is for the best. There are all sorts of other fights to clock, though. Marge is pissed at Jackie because Jackie sent her book to Jenf and some others but hasn’t sent it to Marge. She’s also pissed that Jackie hasn’t been checking up on her enough during the anniversary of her ex-husband’s death. These are the dumbest and pettiest claims in Housewives history and it seems like Marge just wants to be mad that Jackie is friends with Teresa and Jen now. That is totally valid to be mad about, but then Marge should just say it. Instead she rails at Jackie, “I’ve never met anyone as self-centered as you, it’s a disgrace,” but she’s only talking about Jackie’s book that she doesn’t even really want to read. It’s overkill. Then Marge goes after Jenf saying, “This is who you want to associate with.”

We all know that I hate Teresa with the fire of a million-billion suns, but #TeamMelissa is really starting to lose me. First Rachel starts this silly thing with Jenf over nothing and now Marge is tearing everyone new assholes like she’s getting commissions from the National Association of Proctologists. They have absolutely no chill and it’s getting on my nerves. The only one who can still manage some comportment is Melissa, who approaches Jen Aydin to say that the two of them should have an honest discussion about where they stand, even if it’s just to say they hate each other’s guts. This is the only mature thing to happen this entire hour and I look forward to the talk going spectacularly wrong in the best possible way. That could be the only good thing to come out of this day. Well, that and the $200,000 that Bravo fans raised for breast cancer. Sometimes it’s nice to do a little bit of charity, even if it means buying tickets for a seat close to the pettiest drama in Andy Cohen’s dark universe.

‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Season 14 cast announced! See who’s new and who’s returning

The cast of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" Season 14 has officially been revealed.

Bravo announced its upcoming season's official cast on May 22 in a post on its website . The series' newest season— which, according to People , is already underway with production— will feature familiar faces as well as new ones taking a turn in front of the cameras.

Who is returning to 'RHOBH' Season 14?

Bravo's announcement confirms audiences will get to tune into the goings-on of previous cast members, including:

  • Garcelle Beauvais
  • Erika Jayne
  • Dorit Kemsley
  • Kyle Richards
  • Sutton Stracke

Kathy Hilton and Jennifer Tilly will also be on the series, with Bravo specifying in its announcement that they return as "friends" of the cast members.

Who is new to ' RHOBH' Season 14?

American businesswoman Bozoma Saint John joins the cast as a full-time member.

What happened at the end of 'RHOBH' Season 13?

As in previous seasons, the 13th season of the reality show generally focused on its cast members' interpersonal relationships and careers. The next season brings the possibility of incorporating Richards’ estrangement from her husband, Mauricio Umansky , into its storyline.

During an Amazon livestream  in February, Richards explained that the couple weren’t ready to open up about their separation during the 13th Season. Their relationship ultimately became public during the second season of Umansky’s Netflix show, “Buying Beverly Hills.”

“For anyone who is confused, that (decision to split) happened after we were done filming (‘RHOBH’) and the story came out,” Richards said at the time. “Then the Netflix cameras happened to be with us in Aspen, so they ended up filming us talking about it.”

“Obviously, Bravo’s been following my life for 13 years. It’s not like (Netflix) can film that scene, and then I don’t share that with the viewers of ‘The Housewives,’” she continued. “So we ended up shooting that scene — both for ‘Buying Beverly Hills’ and ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’” — after we were all wrapped and the story ended up coming out.”

During a May 14 appearance on the “B---- Bible” podcast, Richards confirmed that she and Umanksy were no longer living together.

Teressa Guidice told her husband Luis 'Louie' Ruelas that Rachel Fuda 's husband John wanted to have a conversation with him on Sunday's episode of The Real Housewives of New Jersey on Bravo.

'If he wants to have a conversation it should be 10 seconds, listen it happened, I'm sorry, it's over. ' Louie said with bravado. 'If he takes it any further than that, I don't really start fights, but I will definitely finish this one.'

Teresa and Rachel have been feuding since the season premiere when Teresa at a birthday party said John 'was 'the biggest drug dealer in Bergen County ' after accusing him of harming Louie's reputation.

The season 14 episode titled A League of Their Own Worst Enemy opened with Margaret Josephs telling her husband Joe Benigno that she was still in shock over losing her ex-husband Jan a year ago. Margaret broke down crying.

'This is real life stuff that can't be fixed,' Margaret said in a confessional. 'No one can fix this.'

Rachel, 33, met Jennifer Fessler, 55, for coffee to talk to her about how upset she felt after she saw her being so friendly with Teresa at the shore.

'I love you and I'm really hurt,' Rachel said and started crying.

Rachel said she felt that Jenn was justifying what Teresa had said about her husband John being a big drug dealer.

'I can't go into situations like Margaret does and draw blood,' Jenn said. 'I'm much better at talking and thinking and hearing people. It's just who I am.'

Rachel told her she felt it would be best in the future if she just removed herself from the situation. Jenn said she didn't understand why she got so upset with her.

'You know where my heart is,' Jenn said.

'Rachel claims she doesn't care who I'm friends with,' Jenn said in a confessional. 'Rachel cares who I'm friends with!'

Jennifer Aydin, 47, had the ladies over to her house to celebrate her dog Biscuit's first birthday. Jennifer went all out for the pooch holding a doggie costume party where the dogs walked a red carpet and then declared Biscuit the winner.

Everyone arrived for the charity softball game and changed into their jerseys. Danielle asked Jackie Goldschneider, 47, who invited her to Jennifer's dog party.

'I'm friends with Jen,' Jackie said. 'The only person I'm not friends with is you.'

Jackie said she knew Danielle had a party and invited everyone else except her.

'You don't take my side in anything,' Jackie said.

Margaret also was upset that Jackie gave an advance copy of her book to Jenn and Melissa, but not her.

Margaret told Jenn that she was hurt that she was associating herself with Teresa.

'If people are nice to me then I'm nice to them back,' Jenn said.

'This is the thing I don't threaten people's families,' Margaret said. 'I just can't hang out with people who ever does things like that.'

Joe and Bill goofed around together at the game, which made Bill's wife Jennifer mad.

'You're hugging him,' Jennifer said. 'It gives the narrative that you don't support me. At this point, it's a respect thing. '

Melissa saw them talking and then walked over. She said she understood that Jennifer had a certain amount of loyalty to some people.

'But I feel that you and I can have a completely different relationship,' Melissa said. 'Let's really have a conversation and if it means ''Hey, Melissa I hate your f***ing guts.'' I want you to tell me that.'

'And vice versa,' Jennifer said.

'This made my year,' Dolores said.

Garcelle Beauvais teases RHOBH Season 14 after cast reveal: ‘Wait tell you see’

Garcelle Beauvais on RHOBH Season 13 reunion

Cameras are finally rolling on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 14 after months of anticipation about the cast.

When Season 13 of RHOBH ended, the futures of several cast members, especially Dorit Kemsley and Kyle Richards, were in question.

The rumor mill began buzzing with possible newbies joining the Beverly Hills ladies, including a General Hospital star.

However, Bravo put all rumors to rest yesterday by announcing the official The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills cast.

Dorit, Kyle, Garcelle Beauvais, Sutton Stracke, and Erika Jayne are all returning with Kathy Hilton and Jennifer Tilly in the “friend of” roles.

Bozoma Saint John rounds out the group as the third newbie to join the series in three years after Diana Jenkins and Annemarie were both one and done.

Hot on the heels of the Season 14 news, Garcelle gave fans a tease as filming begins.

Garcelle Beauvais teases The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 14 after cast reveal

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight this week at the 49th Annual Gracie Awards, where she was honored for her Lifetime movie, Garcelle had some thoughts on the upcoming season of RHOBH.

“Wait till you see. We’re starting right out the gate. Right out the gate. We’re really fun,” she expressed. “I’m not allowed to say a lot. I’ll get in trouble, but I think it’s gonna be really fun and fresh, I really do.”

Although she couldn’t spill any tea, Garcelle did share her feelings on Crystal not returning. Garcelle admitted to being disappointed Crystal won’t be on the show anymore, but they remain good friends.

In fact, Crystal was there to support Garcelle at the Gracie Awards along with Sutton.

What can RHOBH fans expect from Season 14?

The dynamic will once again shift for the upcoming season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

We can expect the fallout of Kyle and Dorit’s fractured friendship to take center stage, especially after what happened at the Season 13 reunion.

Dorit’s separation from her husband, Paul “PK” Kemsley, will be a focal point, as will Kyle and Mauricio Umanksy moving on from their marriage.

Now that Kathy and Jennifer have been added to the mix, there will undoubtedly be some fun and entertaining times, too.

Be sure to keep checking back with Monsters and Critics to learn more about RHOBH Season 14.

The wait for the show’s return is going to be long. However, if the rumors are true, Sutton will be back on the small screen this fall on a different show, and you can read all about that here.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is currently on hiatus on Bravo. Seasons 1-13 are streaming on Peacock.

Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 16 Full Cast Confirmed, Including Drew Sidora

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 16 has a full cast. The season has faced mountains of uncertainty from the moment Season 15 ended. Despite Drew Sidora’s best efforts, Season 15 underperformed with viewers, target demographic or otherwise.

As such, fans and producers alike knew that RHOA required some changes. And typically, when a Real Housewives show isn’t working, that means the network will change up the cast. Still, some familiar faces were confirmed for Season 16.

Bravo decided to bring Porsha Williams back, along with Season 15’s Kenya Moore . Headlines of the stars’ returns were shocking to some. But those weren’t the only surprises that Bravo had up their sleeves. No, far from it. Now, the full Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 16 cast has been revealed.

RHOA Season 16 to feature four new full-time Housewives

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Shamea Morton (@shameamorton)

On May 14, Bravo released a statement saying the network was turning over “a new peach with the Season 16 cast of The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Included in the lineup were familiar faces like Porsha, Kenya, and, as a surprise, Drew. As mentioned, Porsha and Kenya were already confirmed for Season 16. Drew is a newly-announced confirmation.

However, the cast lineup also featured four new Housewives: Brittany Eady , Kelli Ferrell , Shamea Morton Mwangi , and Angela Oakley . Of course, while Shamea might be a new full-time Housewife, fans will recognize her from her previous appearances on the show. In that same vein, Cynthia Bailey will return once again as a friend of the cast.

Furthermore, Bravo confirmed, “Production begins this month with the premiere set for 2025. This season brings a new attitude and fresh perspective as the journey continues for these triumphant housewives as they cultivate new friendships and flourish in their careers and social circles.”

The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 16 is set to air on Bravo in 2025.

Men Fear Me, Society Shames Me, and I Love My Life

A photo illustration of a woman on a beach facing a sunset. The sun’s reflected light is seen through her silhouette.

By Glynnis MacNicol

Ms. MacNicol is a writer, a podcast host and the author of the forthcoming memoir “I’m Mostly Here to Enjoy Myself.”

I was once told that the challenge of making successful feminist porn is that the thing women desire most is freedom.

If that’s the case, one might consider my life over the past few years to be extremely pornographic — even without all the actual sex that occurred. It definitely has the makings of a fantasy, if we allowed for fantasies starring single, childless women on the brink of turning 50.

It’s not just in enjoying my age that I’m defying expectations. It’s that I’ve exempted myself from the central things we’re told give a woman’s life meaning — partnership and parenting. I’ve discovered that despite all the warnings, I regret none of those choices.

Indeed, I am enjoying them immensely. Instead of my prospects diminishing, as nearly every message that gets sent my way promises they will — fewer relationships, less excitement, less sex, less visibility — I find them widening. The world is more available to me than it’s ever been.

Saying so should not be radical in 2024, and yet, somehow it feels that way. We live in a world whose power structures continue to benefit from women staying in place. In fact, we’re currently experiencing the latest backlash against the meager feminist gains of the past half-century. My story — and those of the other women in similar shoes — shows that there are other, fulfilling ways to live.

It is disconcerting to enjoy oneself so much when there is so much to assure you to expect the opposite, just as it is strange to feel so good against a backdrop of so much terribleness in the world. But with age (hopefully) comes clarity.

Fifty is a milestone. And the fact my 50th birthday lands on or around some other significant 50ths has brought some things into focus. Last year was the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. This year is the 50th of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which may be less well known but remains significant: It allowed women for the first time to have bank accounts and credit cards in their own name, not needing a male signature.

That my birth date landed between the passing of these two landmark laws makes it easier for me to see that the life I’m living is a result of women having authority over both their bodies and their finances. I represent a cohort of women who lead lives that do not require us to ask permission or seek approval. I have availed myself of all the choices available to me, and while the results come with their own set of risks, they have been enormously satisfying.

The timing of my birthday also helps me see the violent rollback of women’s rights happening right now as a response to the independence these legal rights afforded women. Forget about the horror of being alone and middle-aged — there is nothing more terrifying to a patriarchal society than a woman who is free. That she might be having a better time without permission or supervision is downright insufferable.

My entry into middle age certainly had the makings of an unpleasant story.

Like many, I spent the early months of the pandemic by myself. It was the type of solitary confinement that popular science, and certain men with platforms, enjoy reminding us will be the terrible future that awaits a woman who remains single for too long. I went untouched by anyone. Unsmelled, too, which you might think is a strange thing to note, but it’s an even stranger thing to experience. Unseen except by the building exterminator and the remaining doormen of the Upper West Side who gave distant friendly greetings on my evening walks around Covid-empty New York.

Alone, unmarried, childless, past my so-called prime. A caricature, culture would have it, a fringe identity; a tragedy or a punchline, depending on your preference. At the very least a cautionary tale.

By August 2021, I was desperate — not for partnership but for connection. I bought a ticket to Paris, a place where I’d spent much of my free time before the pandemic and where I had a group of friends.

Paris, I reminded myself, prioritizes pleasure. I dove in. Cheese, wine, friendships, sex — and repeat.

At first it was shocking. I was ill prepared to get what I wanted, what it seemed I had summoned. There were moments when I wondered whether I should be ashamed. I had also never felt so free and so fully myself. I felt no shame or guilt, only the thrill that came with the knowledge I was exercising my freedom.

These days, generally speaking, there is little in cinema or literature, let alone the online world, to suggest that when you are a woman alone (forget about a middle-aged woman), things will go your way, as I have often experienced.

There have been better times. In the 1980s, sitcoms were stacked with starring women for whom men were a minor-character concern — “Designing Women,” “Murphy Brown,” “The Golden Girls” — all of which, if they premiered today (and that’s a big if), would feel radical. Later there was “Girlfriends.” Even “Sex and the City,” with its often regressive marriage plotting, remains surprisingly modern in its depictions of adult friendship and sexual mores. In each case, just as it looked as if these narratives might begin to fully take root in the real world, the women largely went back inside (or into body bags, in the case of many “Law & Order” plotlines). By the early aughts we were housewives again, real and imagined.

I suspect that a lot of this backlash is connected to the terror that men experienced at discovering that they are less necessary to women’s fulfillment than centuries of laws and stories have allowed them to believe. That terror is abundantly apparent today: From Harrison Butker’s commencement speech suggesting that women may find more fulfillment in marriage and children than in having a career, to the Supreme Court once again debating access to abortion to the push to roll back no-fault divorce laws: All are efforts to return women to a place where others can manage their access to … well, just about everything.

It’s in this light that my enjoyment begins to feel radical. Come fly with me. There’s no fear here.

Showmax Confirms September 29 Premiere for ‘The Real Housewives of Lagos’, Adds Tania Omotayo and Faith Morey to Upcoming Season

WKMUp

Showmax has confirmed the return date of The Real Housewives of Lagos season 2, premiering 29 September 2023, with new episodes on Fridays.

Iyabo Ojo, Toyin Lawani Adebayo, Chioma Ikokwu, Laura Ikeji-Kanu, and Mariam Adeyemi Timmer will be joined by Tania Omotayo and Faith Morey in the second season that promises a rich cultural display and trappings of Lagos high society in what should be an opulent and extravagant season.

essay on real housewives

Tania Omotayo is a fashion entrepreneur, socialite and former model. Speaking on her reality TV debut, the 32-year-old wife and mother of one said: “I joined The Real Housewives of Lagos because my life is so public but not because I shared anything, simply based on assumptions. This was an opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone to actually share a bit of my life and challenge myself with something new”.

Faith Morey is a former basketball player turned supermodel, designer and actress. On why she decided to be a part of the show, Faith said: “I have always loved reality TV. I am a private person but for some reason, I wanted to experience it. I also wanted to meet fellow hardworking ladies. And of course, the franchise needed a touch of Faith Morey. I was the missing puzzle from the show!”

The Real Housewives of Lagos gives an exclusive peek into the lives of some of Lagos’ most affluent and influential women, showcasing their extravagant lifestyles while navigating the intricacies of their high-society circles. Set against the backdrop of the vibrant and cosmopolitan city of Lagos, the show promises a rollercoaster of emotions, friendships, celebrations and rivalries among the cast. This season will also delve deeper into the lives of the housewives, revealing their ambitions and personal triumphs.

essay on real housewives

“The Real Housewives of Lagos shattered records on our platform and dominated conversations on and off social media throughout its run, so it’s really a no-brainer that we’d bring it back,” said the Executive Head of content and West Africa Channels at MultiChoice, Dr Busola Tejumola. “Beyond the show’s entertainment value, RHOLagos’ cultural impact can’t be ignored. The feedback from fans shows that in no small way, the show helped put one of Africa’s most important cities and its vibrant culture on the map. We are thrilled to do it all over again and even bigger this season.”

Darey Art-Alade, Chief Creative Director: Livespot 360, the producers of The Real Housewives of Lagos, said, “This season is as real as ‘reality’ gets! In addition to showing some real-life issues faced by women – particularly African women – including balancing family and career, relationships and societal pressures, we also delved into issues around health. But of course, the drama is still served a la carte!”.

The Real Housewives of Lagos was the first West African instalment of the global Real Housewives franchise, which is distributed internationally by NBCUniversal Formats, a part of Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group.

The popular reality TV series will build on the success of the first season, whose first episode broke the first-day streaming record on Showmax Nigeria and was the only African title to crack the top 10 most-watched shows on the streaming service in 2022 across not just Nigeria but also Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa.

The Real Housewives of Lagos is produced by Livespot 360 and filmed across multiple locations in Nigeria.

The Real Housewives of Lagos will stream from 29 September 2023 on Showmax, with new episodes on Fridays.
