Narrative Essay: I Love My Parents

Parents are the closest people that we have in our lives, whether we realize it or not. They love us not because we are smart, beautiful, successful or we have a good sense of humour, but just because we are their children. I, too, love mom and dad simply because they are my parents, but I think I would have felt the same even if they weren’t. I love who they are as people, each with their own individual traits – and, together, forming an amazing super-team that’s made me who I am today and taught me what life is all about.

My mother is a cheerful, chatty perfectionist who seems to always find something to get excited about and who can talk for hours about animals and flowers. She is never afraid to speak her mind and she can be very convincing when she wants to. She sometimes get upset a bit too easily, but she is just as quick to forgive and forget. I love mom for all that she is – even when she’s angry – for all that she has done for me, and for all that she’s taught me. My mom has been through a lot throughout the years, but she always kept fighting.She taught me to never lose hope even in the direst of moments, and she showed me how to look for happiness in the small things. She’s been trying to teach me to be more organized as well, but hasn’t succeeded yet. I love her for that too.

My father is quiet, patient and calm, and he has an adorable hit-and-miss sense of humour. I may not always find his jokes that funny, but I love him for trying. Dad almost never gets angry and he is always polite, friendly and nice to everyone. He is not the one to verbalize emotions, but he always shows his feelings through sweet gestures and little surprizes. He is the pacifist in our family and never goes against mom’s wishes, but he runs a large company witha firm hand. I love my father for all these characteristics and for all he’s sacrificed to build a better life for us. He’s worked day and night to ensure we afford good education and have a rich, wonderful childhood, and he has passed up many great opportunities for the benefit of our family. I love dad because he’s taught me that you cannot have it all in life, but with hard work and dedication, you can have what matters most to you.

Mom and dad may be very different people, but they complement each other perfectly. Together, they formed a super-team that was always there – and, thankfully, still is – to provide comfort, nurturing, and support and help me grow as a person. Their complementary personalities bring balance in our family, and each of them steps in whenever they are needed the most. Together, they taught me to believe in myself and have turned me into a fighter. In 2008, researchers from the Universities of Exeter and Edinburgh were checking out the genetic link between the way a particular creature fathers versus the way it mothers. Their subject? The burying beetle — which has very specific parenting roles based on their biological sex.

They found that the male burying beetle is involved in much more indirect care of offspring, doing things like taking care of the nest and gathering food. The female burying beetle was much more likely to be involved in direct care of the offspring, doing activities that kept them in much closer contact, like feeding. Importance of a Mother

First of all, Mothers are highly responsible women. They certainly play a very important role in the upbringing of a chil d. Most noteworthy, Mothers play a huge role in determining a child’s attitude. Whether a child will be good or evil in the future depends upon the Mother. The moral values taught by Mother probably play a huge role. Individuals often remember their Mother’s values until old age. Hence, the Mother is responsible for the well-being of society. The future of society in a large way is the result of a Mother’s teaching.

Mothers share a deep connection with their children. This connection certainly cannot be matched by anyone else. Even fathers fail to establish that type of understanding. The origins of this connection happen from infancy. Most noteworthy, a Mother can understand her infant child without communication. This certainly develops a strong emotional connection between a mother and child. This bond seems to carry into adult life. A Mother, it seems like, can always tell when we are feeling hungry.

Mothers also are the emotional backbone of the family. They support everyone’s feeling in a family. Family members can certainly tell their emotions to Mothers without worry. An individual can share almost any secret with Mother. This is because Mothers have a huge level of trust with their family. Furthermore, Mothers have an extremely forgiving nature. Hence, even wrongdoing can be shared with a Mother.

IELTS Essay, topic: the mother’s and father’s role in a family

Boys are most influenced by their fathers and girls are most influenced by their mothers. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons to support your opinion.

It is true that nowadays have a great influence children. Some people hold the opinion that the same sex is the major determination of influencing parent, but others . As far as I am concerned, . My arguments for this point are listed below.

First of all, a father is the person who have already passed ways his son is passing now, in other words, sons are following their father’s footsteps. , based on experience it is easy for a father to notice his sons’ drawbacks and to influence them.

Secondly, it is true that a boy is , a girl is a subtle and fragile one. It is hard for mothers to influence their sons, because it is not likely that can affect a strong one.

In conclusion, it seems to me unfair that boys are most influenced by their mothers. Based on at least two points above I strongly agree that children are influenced by a parent of the same gender.

This essay is too short, 190 words instead of the minimum requirement of 250. It doesn’t say anything about girls being influenced by their mothers, which is also a part of the task – therefore the task is only partially covered. The sentences are not complex enough, there are grammatical mistakes and inaccuracies (see comments underlined in blue). Overall, this looks like a Band 5.5 essay

Mothers play an important role in everyone’s Life since she acts as a Protector, a Friend, and Guide for Life. A Mother does everything selflessly for her child and without any condition. There the love of a Mother is known to be Unconditional. 

The way she manages my family with utter dedication and devotion is inspiring. The relationship with my mother is something very hard to explain. I do not merely love her because she is my mother and we should respect our elders. I love her because she is my world and when I was not able to speak and communicate she took care of me, time and time again. The best part about my mother is that even though I have grown older she knows and understands my needs without me speaking a word. I learned kindness and love from her. She taught me no matter how bad a situation might get, only love can improve it in the most effective way. She has been the rock-solid pillar of my life and in every big moment of my life. 

My Mother has constantly supported me throughout my entire Life, whenever I am in a danger or in a situation where I am stuck, she has always been there for me, protected me, and guided me. She has been my favorite teacher who has taught me about Life and the beauty of it. She is the essence of truthfulness, sincerity, and lots of love. The only person who holds our family together is my Mother. She cares for everyone in the house and for the ones in need outside the house as well. One of the most beautiful things that I learned from my mother is empathy. Be it strangers or animals, she treats everyone equally which makes her more amazing. Moreover, she taught me to not hurt anyone on purpose and help people whenever possible. Not only this but also she taught me to not differentiate among rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. She says that it is the heart of a person that makes them beautiful and rich and not temporary possessions. 

My Mother is my constant source of encouragement, be it in Life or in school for studies. She has always inspired me to do other activities along with my studies. She has taught me to enjoy every aspect of Life and live Life to the fullest. She wants me to do those things in Life as well which she could not do or pursue. She is my backbone for everything. My mother has inspired me through her hard work and sacrifices. She taught me once never to get disheartened by failure and to keep challenging the failure with our honest effort. And one day, failure will pave the path to our success. The strength of facing hurdles and overcoming it is what I have learned from her. 

Mothers have never-ending qualities even though they do not get much credit for their goodness and hard work. She binds everyone in the family and plays a very important part in everyone’s Life. Even when I do something wrong in Life, she scolds me but at the same time, she makes me understand and helps me to get out of the situation. She forgives me after every mistake but ensures that I’ve realized my mistake first. She is the most selfless human being I have ever encountered in my life till now.

My mother knows me in and out. Even if I am lying she catches me immediately and I start feeling guilty. We should never lie to our parents and especially, to our mother. They simply do not deserve it. Mothers spend a significant part of their lives making us capable of standing on our own feet. Sometimes, they have to sacrifice their own career and happiness for that. So a mother's trust should never be destroyed. And when it comes to my mother, I would not change a bit about her. She is the best chef, reading partner, and an independent working woman who can balance almost everything with utmost perfection. Even her imperfection makes me proud of her. Without my mother, I would never become a better human being. My Mother is my biggest strength and makes me, even more, stronger when I go through all my ups and downs in life. The best thing she possesses is her patience. The patience she has is difficult for anyone to have. She deals with every situation in the family, in my life, or even in her Life with so much patience because of the reason the family is bonded so strongly. Typically, people speak of mother’s love and appreciation, and often overlook the father’s attention. Mother’s love is talked extensively around anywhere, in film, in series, and much more.

What we fail to recognize, though, is the power of a parent who always gets overlooked. My father is a gift which not many citizens see in their lives. 

It’d be incorrect to assume that every dad is the perfect hero for his kids, and it is not the case. However, I will voucher for my dad without even any second thoughts until it comes to becoming an ideal man.

How different is my father?

As everyone wants to assume that their father is exceptional, so do me. However, this belief is not purely based on the passion I have for him but also on his character.

My father has a company and is very diligent in all facets of life. My father is one of those who told me to exercise still professionalism, no matter what kind of work I do.

Most notably, he has a pleasant disposition and always makes my mom laugh with his dumb shenanigans, and after 27 months of the relationship.

I totally enjoy this dumb side of him when he’s around his relatives. He does his hardest to satisfy all our desires, but he still retains strictness whenever the need arises.

My childhood memories about him are a stern, strict, or not very conversational man. He would crack its most funny jokes of Dad, and we’ll all laugh and smile.

He felt a persevering and robust sense of obligation for his own birth family and also his marital ones.

The meager paycheck that he always received would be shared between such two families, so when he was bad in currying favor or supporting himself, my father did not rise inside the ranks, so his profits remained very mirage until he passed.

This formally made us a low-income family, so our childhoods were thrifty, frugal, and austere. A little bit of money mattered a lot.

In spite of these limitations, my father has effectively prepared our futures. If his provident money was released during his retirement, he used the whole sum, plus a personal loan, to purchase a home and in the name of his young son. We had a roof above our heads and for the remainder of our days.

Why do I like my father?

Among the most amazing aspects of my father was the number of things he was involved in.

He’d spend hours from outside the tailor’s shop seeing him making shirts, and within a few months, he purchased himself the Singer sewing machine. From that day forward, all our clothing, along with the winter school uniforms, were sewn by him.

He taught himself carpentry and designed the sofa sets that we’ve been using for generations.

He got to learn dry cleaning and then after that, in winter, we did go to school smelling kerosene.

My father was a great chef, so he enjoyed the food. While my mother was immobilized by lymphatic TB, she must have prepared breakfast, lunch, or dinner for her family and in the morning until heading off to work.

Best of everyone, he was a talented guitarist, blessed with the vichitra veena. He had a Carnatic’ band’ of his own with such a flautist as well as a mridangam player.

Things I learned from my father

Slowly, I learned how much more of how I was influenced by who he is and. Like him, I’m never tired, so I’m always intrigued by everything else in my life.

I’m still interested in doing something positive or educational. I’m 2 two years younger now than he was while he died, so I began to learn how to play piano, appreciate search engine optimization, UX design, or drawing.

I heard from him every kindness is a frame of mind, not a wallet condition. The amount of nameless, faceless poor folks my father supported was long, which we heard only when he passed.

Never demeaning the recipients with such a handout, he encouraged them to reimburse at their pace and time but made saying they actually so, preserving their self-respect.

Without even talking about it, he taught me what something means to become a parent, and what it means to become a lifeless person.

My father as the source of motivation

I can proudly say that this was my father, who was the source of my inspiration since day one. In those other words, his outlook and personality influenced me together like a human.

About the same way, he still has a huge effect on the environment inside his own little ways. My father dedicates his spare time to have to take care of stray animals that encourage me to be doing the same thing.

My father has told me the essence of love in the shape of a rose that he gives to my mother every day without fail. This continuity and devotion encourage us all to handle them in the same manner.

All my experience in sports or vehicles, I’ve come from my dad. This is one of the few reasons why I want to be a cricket player in the future.

Six months later, my dad, moving via Delhi in December, met me to see how his powerful-headed son would do and saw that I had lived quite well without borrowing and asking. He was clearly swelled with pride.

My father hugged me, forgave me for one moment, used 400 rupees as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other essentials.

Since that day on, he could happily say, “My son pursued his heart more than my head – see what a great job he did.”

We always think that for a happy marriage, the two people should share many similarities. My parents have been married for twenty years and they have a happy, stable marriage. However, people always curious about how they can hardly have a quarrel for they are two very different people. Their differences in physical appearance, view towards life as well as personalities are so obvious that even a stranger can see it. My mother and father are Portuguese. But, their facial bone, body size and skin color are in contrast to each other. My father has facial bone of Europeans man in which he has big, round eyes with thick eyebrows.

His nose is very high as the nose of those western characters. His skin is fair and slightly pink in color. As for his body size, my father has height of 5’ 2” which is the average height of a normal man. Also, he is thin and has strong limbs as a result of the hard work as a construction worker. My mother is of the opposite of my dad. She has a typical European women face with small eyes below her sparse eyebrows. She has low bridge of the nose and the shape of the tip of her nose is as if a red guava. My mother is fatter than my father. My mother’s height is below 5’ which is bellow women average height.

Different from my father, my mother has yellow, pale color skin. Her limbs are fat and short. Besides physical appearance, they have very different views towards life. My father is a construction worker. For him, one should not enjoy his life. In his point of view, working and earning money is the main purpose of living rather than enjoyment. Consequently, it always takes us a lot of effort to persuade him for a trip to any places with our family during the holidays, including his birthday. My father is more of a saver than a spender. My mother, on the other hand, has a view that one should enjoy his life at the same time he works.

For her, earning money is an endless process and money is earned to spend. It is silly to earn a lot of money and store it in the bank without spending it forever. Furthermore, she thinks that spending money is a reward for herself after her hard work. MY mother is more of a spender than a saver. Lastly, my parents have contrary personalities. My father is a dull man. He is neither romantic nor interesting at all. He never remembers and celebrates our birthday. In fact, he never gives mother a surprise for their marriage anniversary. He has more of an anger stressful personality.

Despite his anger personality my father is more understanding when I talk to him about something. He knows when he is right and knows when he is wrong, my father isn’t afraid to admit it. As for mother, she is a fun and romantic woman. She holds birthday party for us almost every year and says “It’s your birthday! You should celebrate for you have grown up another year! ” For their marriage anniversary, she never admonish father for his carelessness. Therefore, she plays the role who gives surprises for father during their anniversaries. Furthermore, she is flexible and adventurous.

Even though she is adventures she also has her restrictions. She is stricter than my father. You can never talk to her about anything because she will take it to the next level, and to her she is always right regardless is she isn’t. Even though my father and mother are in contrast in many aspects, they have a very happy marriage. So, it can be concluded that the differences between two people will not be the obstacles in building a happy marriage. I believe it is toleration that allows them to build a strong bond between themselves and lead toward a happy marriage with no quarrels or family issues.

Reflecting on a Father’s Wartime Experience

In this excerpt from his book “Fighting the Night,” Paul Hendrickson recounts the time his Nonna tried to prevent her son-in-law—Hendrickson’s dad—from being sent overseas, one of many tales about his father’s time during World War II.

In Paul Hendrickson’s latest book, Fighting the Night: Iwo Jima, World War II, and a Flyer’s Life, Henrickson recounts the history of his father, Joe Paul Hendrickson, as he enlists, gets married, travels across the country from base to base with his new wife, and eventually gets called up to service in 1944, a 25-year-old First Lieutenant leaving at home his 21-year-old wife and two young children.

The excerpt here reveals the complicated notions of family and honor, obligation and allegiance as Hendrickson’s grandmother, whom they all called Nonna, writes to then-First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in an attempt to prevent her son-in-law from being sent overseas.

When I was growing up, it was just another good Nonna story, among so many Nonna stories: the time my maternal grandmother wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt, trying to keep my dad from being sent overseas to the war. She wanted the president’s wife to intervene in some way so that my father would be ordered to stay stateside and take care of his newly pregnant wife. “Wanted” would be putting it mildly. This was June 1942. My father had been in the service for four-and-a-half years then. My dad had been Nonna’s son-in-law for four months. If it was a good story later, it wasn’t so funny at the time. I’m not exactly clear on when my father found out, but when he did, I don’t think he spoke to her for a while. He felt Nonna’s interference was going to hold back his career. Apparently it didn’t hold back a thing. Indeed, I’m wondering if Nonna’s famous letter, famous in our family, didn’t do my dad sly good with some military superiors who had unstoppable mothers-in-law of their own.

I picture Nonna writing her letter to the First Lady—in blue fountain-pen ink on two sheets of plain, white, 8.5x10 stationery, the kind you might buy at Woolworth’s—late at night, in one take, at an oilcloth-covered table in her Ohio farm kitchen. Her husband, my Pop, unaware, has gone off to bed. Even if he’d been awake and aware, I doubt Pop might have tried to halt Nonna. Once she set her mind to something, the more so if it had anything to do with perceived harm to family, Nonna was her own force of nature.

Her first name was Isadora, shortened to Dora. She was first-generation Irish, deeply religious, descended from Conleys and Murphys. She was reed thin. She was a ’50s health cultist, with all sorts of wild-seeming theories, which turned out to be not so kooky, after all, in the years after she was gone.

Nonna told me once, in reference to my brother Marty, who was often in trouble as an adult of one minor kind or another, that she would mortgage her house and anything else she possessed, if it came down to saving him from jail (which he was threatened with a time or two in his life). It wouldn’t have mattered to her that she might be enabling his bad gambling habits or bailing him out of other kinds of debts, some of which weren’t minor. “He’s my flesh and blood, Paul,” she said. That was that.

In her Eleanor letter, some of her sentences crowded the margins, and Nonna also employed a string of ampersands and other abbreviations: not a second to waste. She put the date at the top: “June 20, ’42.”

Dear Mrs. Roosevelt,

Please pardon me for taking up your valuable time but I am coming to you for a very grave matter. You being very broad-minded, I know you will do something about this matter about which I am making an appeal.

My daughter (Rita Kyne Hendrickson), the wife of 2nd Lt. Joseph Paul Hendrickson is three months pregnant & of course is expecting a baby the last of November or the first of December. They were married in February and she is 19 years old. I am making sacrifices and all of us are willing to make sacrifices to win the war but as many of the soldiers are being sent overseas we naturally feel like he may get orders sometime to go. Don’t you think he is greatly needed in this country now and it is important that he be with her the next 6 months to come? She will be needing medical care & attention from him & he will be worried & sick if he isn’t with her so I think it would be the death of the three of them. . . .You as the mother of six children can see how important it is that he be left in the States & I know can & will do something about it.

Toward the end: “I am enclosing stamps for your sending of registered mail about this matter—to whom I do not know.” Tagged on: “I will appreciate this Mrs. Roosevelt & always remember you as a friend & thank you. You see I can talk frankly to you on this subject as ‘woman to woman.’”

She signed it, “Mrs. Bernard Kyne, Xenia, Ohio, R.3. Cin. Pike. The “Cin” stood for Cincinnati. Pop and Nonna’s farm sat off the Cincinnati Pike, a few miles south of Xenia. It’s the farm where my mom grew up.

I wonder if FDR’s wife even saw it. It seems clear somebody on her staff saw it (and possibly pocketed the stamps). About two weeks later, a high officer in the Adjutant General’s Office in Washington wrote to Nonna in his best, straight-faced, governmental voice. (I can see Nonna’s letter getting passed around the office: Hey, Guys, check this one.)

“Dear Madam,” began Major General J.A. Ulio. Reference is made to your letter of June 20, 1942, addressed to Mrs. Roosevelt, in the interest of your son-in-law, Second Lieutenant Joseph P. Hendrickson, in which you requested that he be assigned to some unit which will not leave the United States.

Your anxiety in this matter is appreciated, however, this office regrets very much that no assurance can be given at this time of Lieutenant Hendrickson’s continued duties within the United States.

The adjutant’s reply was dated July 3, 1942. That same day, my mom and dad, innocent of it all, were aboard the Super Chief, out of Chicago, headed back to San Bernardino, where they’d been posted several months before, and where my dad would now await orders in the fall for flight school. The day before, on the 2nd, they had left Xenia by rail, had changed in Dayton for Chicago, had arrived in the Windy City on the morning of the next day, had spent that day seeing a few sights, and at suppertime had boarded for the Coast.

I’m wondering if Nonna’s famous letter, famous in our family, didn’t do my dad sly good with some military superiors who had unstoppable mothers-in-law of their own.

A week earlier, my dad had graduated from eight weeks of temporary duty propeller school at Pratt & Whitney’s headquarters in East Hartford. My mom had left Connecticut ahead of my dad and had taken the train to Ohio, via Penn Station in New York, and my dad had then followed her to spend five or six days at the farm with her and his in-laws. Probably he had helped out Pop with some of the chores. He and Pop always got along beautifully.

July 3, 1942, was a Friday. The next day, the national holiday, and the day and night following, this much-in-love couple, just kids, with my older brother Marty starting to grow inside my mom’s stomach, were rolling through Dodge City and Albuquerque and Gallup and Winslow and Seligman and Needles and Barstow, and then right on into San Berdoo in the early hours of the third day out. Sounds pretty sweet: getting to spend the 4th of July, even or especially with a war on, on the crack train of the Santa Fe Railway, looking at their country from the other side of their Pullman glass.

Somehow, I had forgotten all about Nonna’s letter. And then, several years ago, I opened my dad’s thick (and saved) military file at the national archives in St. Louis, and there it was, first document in the folder, staring up at me, its original, hilarious self, not even yellowed or curled. Nonna died in 1978, but suddenly I had her back. I hooted, drawing looks from the other researchers in the reading room.

What’s the Best Advice You’ve Received About Fatherhood?

With Father’s Day around the corner, we’re looking for tips you’d like to pass on.

Parenthood does not come with a definitive instruction manual. While there are scores of books, influencers and classes offering guidance on how to raise children, the experts all have their own, sometimes wildly different, methods. Family members or strangers on the internet who may or may not have been asked for their advice are also eager to share their often conflicting opinions. And, still, even though men are spending more time at home with their families, many of those discussions are aimed at mothers.

That’s not to say dads aren’t searching for advice. Anyone with a child, no matter what age, needs help at some point, and, in the midst of all the noise, fathers find the strategies, tips, and yes, dad jokes, that work for them.

Ahead of Father’s Day, we’d like to hear your best pieces of advice for dads today. If you’re already a father, it could be a hack that was passed down to you, or one you discovered almost by mistake. Maybe you have a seemingly magic formula to calm down a fussy kid, or a way to stay connected to a teenager in your life. Is there a parenting motto that kept you sane when things got tough? Is there something special your own father did that you wish other dads knew about?
