One of my strongest childhood memories is playing in the park with my best friend. We would spend hours there, running and playing on the swings and slides. The sun would beat down on us as we giggled and chased each other, and our laughter echoed in my mind even now. We would also play games of tag and hide and seek and always have fun. I remember feeling so carefree and happy in those moments, with no worry. These memories of playing in the park with my best friend bring back feelings of pure joy and innocence, and I will always treasure them as some of my fondest childhood memories.

Memory is an interesting and important part of our lives. When I look back on my childhood, I recall many stories. Some make me happy, and others help me learn and grow.

Summer At My grandparents

One of my most memorable childhood memories is playing with my friends in my neighborhood. I grew up in a small village surrounded by lush green trees and rolling hills. One of our favorite games captured the flag. We would divide into two teams, each with their own flag that they would hide. But when he realized he jumped and took me off the water. That was a very shocking memory that I can’t forget. It could be worse.

The first day at school is a beautiful memory that I can remember clearly. That was a very special event for me. I was very excited. I have been preparing for school and worked very hard for three months. My mother was also working very hard to teach me all the basic things such as alphabets and a few rhymes. 

I was pretty confident. I got my new uniform, school bag, some books, and new shoes. And the day came and they took me to school. That is quite a popular school in the city. My parents took me to the headmaster’s room. 

He was a gentleman and he greeted us properly. I can remember he asked me some basic questions and I answered them confidently. He called an assistant teacher and sent me to my classroom . A class was going on there already and I joined it. I found tons of boys and girls my age.

"Was my childhood that bad?"

In a previous post, we explored factors that shape a person's understanding of childhood trauma, such as the role of both adverse and positive experiences and why the answer to that question is yours and yours alone.

However, the complexity of early experiences demonstrates that while childhoods can have objectively “bad” experiences, how you interpret the experiences determines whether they feel subjectively “bad” to you.

Your childhood can be both/and; it doesn’t have to be either/or.

Why childhood can be both/and not either/or.

Understanding childhood experience complexities and their impact on an adult is a nuanced process.

When reflecting on whether a childhood was “really that bad,” it’s important to recognize the answer can encompass both positive and negative aspects, rather than being a simple either/or situation.

It’s entirely possible to hold compassion for your parents and recognize the challenges they faced, including the damaging social forces that influenced their actions and decisions at that time (forces like sexism, racism , and classism).

Most parents work hard to provide for and protect their children, doing the best they can within their limitations and the constraints of their circumstances in the country and the age of history they are raising them.

At the same time, it’s also vital and valid to acknowledge the effect their limitations had on your development and well-being.

For example, your mom worked 80 to 90 hours a week, leaving her emotionally exhausted at the end of the day and not able to support you emotionally but still providing for the rent and groceries.

It was a both/and experience. She did the best she could; she provided for and protected you, and yet couldn’t be there for you in other ways.

Or, being around your dad felt like walking on eggshells because of his anxiety and anger but you know he had C-PTSD from his own physically abusive childhood.

It was a both/and experience. He didn’t hit you like his father, but still, his unprocessed trauma affected you and your sense of comfort and safety in the home.

Recognizing both the positive intent and the negative impact of our parents and guardians is a form of accepting contradictory thinking and appreciating the good while acknowledging the harm or limitations.

The challenge of accepting the duality of experiences prevents us from consciously asking: “Was my childhood really that bad?”

If we can learn to hold both/and versus considering either/or, we may support ourselves in critically examining our personal histories more thoughtfully.

But that leads us to wonder: Why even bother asking the question?

Why is it important to ask: “Was my childhood really that bad?”

“What’s the point of blaming my parents – I know they did the best they could.”

“All therapists just want to talk about childhood and blame parents, don’t they?”

“I don’t want to get stuck in the past. I want to move forward.”

These are all iterations of comments I’ve heard from therapy clients, my online course students, and readers of my work over the years.

To each of these points, I would answer the following:

It’s important to ask the question: “Was my childhood really that bad?” It supports your overall biological, psychological, and social healing.

Not to blame your parents.

Not to stay stuck in the past.

Not to be self-indulgent.

But when we can confront the truth of our lives and see things more plainly, how we formed in relationship to our past, we can get ourselves the right kind of help to recover and heal from it.

And why is recovering and healing so important if we’ve had a “bad” childhood?

Confronting one’s history of childhood trauma, particularly for those with high adverse childhood experiences (ACE) scores, is a crucial step toward holistic health and well-being in adulthood.

The connection between high ACE scores and physical health is profound.

Research indicates a marked increase in the risk of serious health conditions like cancer and heart disease among individuals with high ACE scores.

This link is often attributed to the long-term effects of stress hormones , which, when persistently activated, can cause various chronic health issues.

The Cleveland Clinic provides valuable insights into how stress impacts the body, emphasizing the importance of addressing these early life experiences.

Mental health is also deeply influenced by childhood trauma.

The original ACE Study, along with subsequent research , has established a clear link between the number of ACEs and the severity of mental health disorders, including depression .

Research has shown a strong relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and difficulties in adult relationship formation.

You can see addressing and healing from childhood trauma is vital not just for your individual physical and mental well-being as an adult, but also for your social and relational well-being.

What options are available if you conclude your childhood was “bad”?

If you’ve asked yourself this question and come to the conclusion that your childhood was “bad” and you come from a childhood trauma history, you may be asking yourself, “Okay, so what next? Now that I know, what do I do? How do I get better and heal from these experiences?”

The answer is in two words: Trauma therapy.

Specifically, and with more context, it’s important for you to know that evidence-based therapies like EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) can be a truly wonderful resource. It is particularly effective in easing the distress associated with traumatic childhood memories, with studies indicating its efficacy in reducing PTSD symptoms and improving overall mental health.

Talking about your childhood may be a question that comes up in the IELTS speaking test.

But it could also be a topic of conversation between you and some native English speakers. Or you might be asked to talk about this in an interview for college or a job.

It should be easy to talk about your childhood — it is a topic you know very well.

But for many English learners, it presents a real challenge.

They hear the question: Do you have any interesting stories about your childhood?

And they are at a complete loss at what to say.

Let’s go over what you can say about your childhood in English.

In the following guide, I want to show you many useful phrases and vocabulary that you can use to talk about all the things you did when you were a child.

Useful Phrases to Talk about your Childhood in English

I think it’s a good idea to start by looking at some very common phrases that people use when talking about their childhood.

In My Teens

This phrase means ‘during the time you were a teenager’. A teenager is anyone between the age of 13 and 19. Often a time when we are going through some changes.

In my teens, we lived in a tiny village by the sea In my teens, I rebelled against my parents I was pretty awkward in my teens I didn’t really have many interests in my teens

When I was a Kid

This means any time that you were a child. Could refer to when you were very little — 5 to 7 years old. Or as a teenager. It is all relative to the person speaking.

When I was a kid, we used to go to Epping Forest with my Dad I hated school when I was a kid When I was a kid, we lived in London I would often play in the street with my friends when I was a kid

When I was a Child

This has the same meaning as ‘when I was a kid’ but more formal.

When I was a child, my mother would sometimes get angry with me I loved to read when I was a child

When I was Younger

This could mean any time when you were younger. It is all relative to the person speaking.

When I was younger, I loved to play with my train set I liked to watch cartoons when I was younger When I was younger, we never had computers

When I was Much Younger

This could refer to a time when you were very young. For example, if you are in your mid-twenties and use this phrase, it could mean when you were a very small child or before you were a teenager. But again, it is relative to the speaker.

You might also use this phrase to refer to an earlier time in your childhood.

I was good at reading when I was at school, but my parents had taught me to read when I was much younger When I was a teenager, I was always going out on my bike with my friends, but when I was much younger, I liked to stay with my mum and dad

When I was Just a Kid

Kid means child. We just ‘just a kid’ to talk about things we did as a child, and I didn’t have any experience or knowledge about life. The word ‘just’ makes it seem that we were very young and naïve.

I would spend hours watching cartoons on TV when I was just a kid I believed in all kinds of things when I was just a kid — ghosts and monsters, things like that

When I was Small

We use this phrase in English to refer to a time when we were physically small.

I used to play hide and seek when I was small My mother would walk me to school when I was small

This could refer to any time when you were younger than you are now. It is relative — so it could mean when you were any age. An old man might say when I was young, but regarding a time when he was in his thirties.

I was Born In

This phrase tells the listener where you were born — very simple.

I was born in Japan I was born in London I was born in a small town in Nigeria

But it could also be used to tell the listener which year you were born.

I was born in 2003 I was born in 1996

But I Grew Up In

We say this to talk about where we spent our childhood years growing up. We say but if where we were born and where we grew up were different places.

But I grew up in the countryside But I grew up in France I was born in London, but I grew up in Manchester I was born in China, but grew up in Australia

I was a very ……….. boy/girl

This phrase can be used to describe what kind of child you were. It can talk about your personality or your behaviour when you were very young.

I was a very naughty boy I was a very quiet girl I was a very clever boy I was a very imaginative girl

I never/I always/I sometimes

A useful thing to talk about when talking about your childhood is to say the things you never did or always did. You can also talk about things you sometimes did.

I never talked back to the teachers I never got into trouble with my parents I always played games with my younger brother I always liked to watch action movies on TV I sometimes went to visit my grandmother I sometimes liked to cook something with my mother

This is a very common phrase to use in English when talking about your childhood. You can use this phrase to talk about repeated actions or habits you had as a child.

We form the phrase like this:

Used to + Infinitive

For example:

I used to go shopping with my mother

I used to play games with my friends

When we use this phrase, we are talking about something we did as a child, but no longer do — probably because we are much older and not interested in the same things or a change of lifestyle.

We can use this phrase to talk about repeated actions or habits that we had when we were a child.

It is formed like this:

We use this phrase when we are talking about our childhood and the things that we often did regularly. But we no longer do these things today because we are older and our lives have changed.

Please note that we cannot make sentences about states using I would.

Childhood Memories

It is a great idea to talk about events and stories that you can remember from your childhood. If you are talking about your childhood in the IELTS test, you should definitely tell a story. The examiner loves to hear stories, and this is an excellent opportunity for you to tell one.

You can tell a story about one of the following topics.

  • playing with your friends
  • going outside with your parents
  • going to the beach with your family
  • learning to ride a bike
  • learning to read with your mum or dad

Let’s look at some examples of some stories.

When I was young, I used to go to the beach with my family. Sometimes we would go for a holiday and stay at a campsite near the sea. We would go to the beach every day and play on the sand and go swimming in the sea. It was great fun. There was a big rock on the beach and when we were kids, we imagined it to be a mountain. Our dad would come with us and we would climb up the big rock. From the top, we could see down the whole beach. Then in the evenings we would eat fish and chips and drink cans of fizzy pop. It was very simple when I think about it, but when I was a kid, it just seemed like a magical time.
I got my first bike when I was very young — about five or so. I learned how to ride it using those stabilizer wheels on the back. My dad took them off and I can remember crying at the time. But it helped me to learn how to ride the bike properly. When I was older — maybe around eleven — my dad bought me a bigger bike. This was a sports bike and could go much faster. It had gears and drop-down handlebars. I would go with my friends on bike trips in the countryside. I don’t think we went very far, but it seemed like a very long way at the time. One time we got lost, and we had no idea where we were. We asked some policemen, and they gave us directions and we got home safely.
I’ve always loved reading books, and I put that down to my mum and dad. They encouraged me to read books from a very young age. I learned to read when I was very young. I can remember my mum sitting down with me and helping me to read a book. She must have been very patient because she spent a long time sitting down with me and teaching me how to read. When I was a little older, I had my own bookshelf filled full of books. I loved to lie on my bed and bury my head in a book and read a story. By the time I was in high school, I was reading very advanced novels and other books. I have to thank my mum and dad for helping me do this.

Just as it is a good idea to talk about things you did as a child and tell stories from your childhood, it is also a great idea to talk about your behaviour as a child.

Essentially, there are two types we can talk about:

Good Behaviour

Bad Behaviour

Let’s look at some examples.

  • Helping your parents do chores in the house
  • Helping your parents with the shopping in the supermarket
  • Handing your homework in on time — and all completed!
  • Taking your dog for a walk every day
  • Keeping your room clean and tidy
  • Being polite to others — your neighbours, your teachers, and especially to your parents!
  • Treating elders with respect
  • Not throwing trash in the street or outside

Could be the opposite of any of the above plus…

  • Spending time with the wrong friends
  • Not studying hard enough
  • Getting up late
  • Watching too much TV
  • Spending too much time with screens — smartphone or computer
  • Not saying please or thank you
  • Breaking things
  • Making your clothes dirty

Let’s look at some stories from peoples’ childhood about good and bad behaviour.

When I was a kid, I was really naughty. I was always getting into trouble. Me and my friends used to play a game called Knock Down Ginger. We would quietly go up to someone’s house and knock loudly on their door. Then we would run away laughing. As we ran, we could hear the person whose door we knocked on shouting after us. One day, as we ran away, I heard one of the people calling out after us. They called out my name! When I got home later that day, my mother was waiting for me. She was furious. She knew exactly what I had been doing and said that she had received a phone call from someone down the road. She marched me to the person’s home and made me apologise. I stopped playing this stupid game after that.
I was a good kid at school. I liked going to school, and I liked the teachers. Some of the other kids liked to play around and be foolish, but I always thought what we were doing in class was more interesting. The teacher would introduce something on the blackboard and then we would have to do something in our groups. I always made sure I was in a group with the good kids so we could finish the exercise properly, but there was a group of bad boys who always played around. The teacher often had to shout at them.
When I was younger, I never cleaned my room. Right up until I was still in high school, my room looked like a terrible mess. My mother would often come up to my room and tell me to clean it up. I had old clothes all over the floor, comics all over the place, and even dirty cups that had not been washed for weeks. One time my mother could not take anymore. She came into my room with a big plastic bag and started dumping everything into it. “If you don’t want to clean it, then it must be rubbish so I’m throwing it all out,” she said. I panicked and immediately cleaned my entire room. But after I left home for college, my room has always been clean and tidy.
As a very young child, I loved to go to the supermarket with my mum. I thought I was helping her, but I don’t know how much help I really provided for her. I loved to push the trolley around the supermarket. My mum would pick out vegetables and other food and place it in the trolley. And then when we got to the checkout, I refused to let my mum take anything out of the trolley. I thought that was my job. I don’t do this today. I sometimes go down to the shop to get something for my mum, but I don’t go to the supermarket with her anymore. My mum often reminds me of the times I helped her when I was a little kid — usually in front of all my friends!

Think of a story from your childhood where you displayed good or bad behaviour.

Write the story down so it is all clear in your mind. Then practise reading it out loud.

Keep trying until you can say the whole story without looking at your notes.

These are the Rules!

When we are children, we are introduced to the idea of rules.

There are rules at home, rules at school, rules in other peoples’ homes and rules everywhere.

Below is a list of phrases we can use to introduce what our parents allowed us — or didn’t allow us — to do.

Now let’s use these in some examples.

Childhood is a time for firsts.

Here is a list of common first experiences from when we were younger.

I had my first birthday party when I was eight years old. All my friends from school came to our house, and we played in the garden and ate some food. We played some games and my mum gave everyone some jelly and ice-cream.   When I was a kid, we had a pet dog called Misty. She was a great dog — very friendly and loved to play with us when we were all young. I don’t know what kind of dog she was as she was a mixed breed, but we thought she was beautiful. She loved to come and play with us in the park. We would go on the slide and Misty would follow us up the steps and come down the slide with us. Sometimes she would get a little dirty and my mum would get angry about that.   I can remember playing outside on my bike when I was about 5 or 6 years old. I slipped and grazed my arm on a wall of a neighbour’s house. Some blood appeared, and I was really upset about it. I remember I started to cry and shout out for my mother. She came outside and saw me on the ground with a grazed arm. She dragged me into the house and put cold water on my arm. It was nothing serious, but I thought it was terrible at the time.   When I was little, a had a tooth that became loose. I was really scared at the time, but my dad just laughed. He said that he would help me pull it out. He grabbed hold of me and went to put his fingers on the loose tooth. Of course, he was only joking, but as I struggled to free myself, the tooth fell out! I put it under my pillow that night and I woke up to find some money in its place. I wonder who did that?

How Can I Be Free When My Child Is Incarcerated?

I t began during the COVID-19 pandemic. LA was shut down, and I got a phone call from my mother telling me that my son, Damiani, had done something he shouldn't have. It was Mother’s Day, and my son called me from a burner phone saying he was going to be on the run for a while. Towards the end of 2020, he got caught for a home invasion. Everything was virtual, so I couldn’t go into the courtroom, and he eventually got transferred to a maximum prison, sentenced to 9 years and 9 months.,

That's where my journey began. 

I believe in God, I go to church. But as I tried searching for communities that could speak to my specific experience as a mother with an incarcerated child, I couldn’t find anything. I went on YouTube and saw a few shortclips. I typed “moms with incarcerated kids” in my podcast app only to find episodes generally about prisons. Nothing was about the walk of a mother. 

I am the kind of person who has a glass of wine with Jesus on the balcony. Next thing I know, I'm hearing, ‘Why don't you start the podcast?’ So, a couple of months later, I did

So I ordered a mic, created a little studio in my apartment, and set up shop. A few months later, I launched my podcast and started just talking about the day in the life of a mother like me—how my family doesn’t understand, how people judge you as mothers, like “Oh, you failed as a mother, you should do better.” I had a lot of anger issues that I took out on my family and friends because I was so mad at my son for what he was doing. I thought it was my fault, and I learned that it wasn't. I shared that it was hard. That never in a million years did I think I was going to be here. I shared that I thought my son was going to get a scholarship to go to college for football, but things shifted. I shared that I still have to get up and go to work, and, with a team of 10 employees, leave my problems at the door. I cry in the car, put my makeup back on, and walk in like nothing's wrong. I try my best to keep it all together. 

After I started the podcast, I went to Facebook to see if there were any groups for mothers with incarcerated kids. There were a couple out there, and I joined, but the one thing I didn't like about the other groups is they lacked a positive, good flow of energy. Some of these mothers had children that were doing 20 years to life. One mother told a story about how her son died in prison. I started to get anxious, so I thought, let me create my own Facebook community and set the tone differently than everybody else’s. I created it in July of 2022. I called it “The Impact of Incarceration on Mothers, ”

In this group, you can cry, laugh, vent, and, most of all, there’s a sentiment that we're going to get through this. We’re stronger together. We’re at 1,600 women, with 300 new members as of April. And we’re not just in California, we’re all over the U.S. I'm very transparent about my journey, and I have mothers messaging me saying “I’m so happy I found you because nobody understands how I feel.” Trust is why the group is what it is—and why it keeps growing every day. (On a recent morning, for instance, I got another 20 notifications of women joining). This is a safe place for mothers, and we're not pointing fingers.

Mothers share their stories in posts and comments, and sometimes over Zoom calls. We have a mother that has three children in prison, 22 to 30, and she travels to three different states to see them. She lives in Atlanta, and she makes the trip with her husband to California where one of her sons is incarcerated in Long Beach. There's a mother who has to figure out how she’s going to come up with $20,000 for a lawyer, who asks about churches and nonprofit organizations who could help her. There's another woman with a disability who needs to find someone to give her a ride to visit her son. Oftentimes we ask questions: Do I use my money for my child inside or do I cover the cost of school backpacks for my two at home? My son is about to come up on his sentence; what does the parole situation look like? Can you guys help me find a lawyer? And all the mothers jump in. 

I shared my own story, too. I put in the group that it was my son’s first time in solitary confinement, and I hadn’t heard from him in two months. One woman told me I could call up the prison and ask for a wellness check, where a counselor would speak to my son and report back. I didn’t know that, but the community that I’m building did, so I was able to hear the basics about how my son was doing. One mother shared that there was a lockdown at her son’s prison in Texas, and so many moms started responding saying ‘wait a minute my son is there too!’ Then another mom shared why there was a lockdown, because she was super in tune with what was going on. So we’re able to share news with each other in real time.

When I started the group, the more I kept reading the comments like, “I don't want to get out of bed today,” or “the doctor told me to start walking but I can’t,” I began to think of how I could shift this atmosphere while supporting these moms. So, I proposed a 21 day workout challenge and my notifications started going off with moms saying, “Yes, let's do something.” Next thing I knew women were posting selfies on hikes and moving their bodies. We’re a funny group. We do videos, we cry together, we post pictures of our dogs for National Dog Day, we’ll ask each other about recent dates, or who just got their hair done. We don’t always have to talk about our children being incarcerated.

I'm embracing this time because I feel like it's growing me as a mother. I was young when I had my son, and didn't know what I was doing. I would still do the basic things like pick my son up from school, but I would drop him off at his grandmother's house and go to parties. We were raising each other. I would share things about my life and he’d give me advice. Sometimes I didn't know if I was his mom or his sister. 

Damiani is unique. He’s always been different in a crowd, even his teachers would tell me that. He has a smile on him that just lights up the room, and he’s like a spitting image of me. He can gather people together, especially when there's dysfunction going on, and he has a great sense of humor. So in the midst of all of this, my son and I have a dynamic relationship. I told him about the Facebook group and he said he was so proud of me. He laughed and said, "It took me going to prison for you to find your purpose.”

My son’s middle name is Nassir. Since he’s been locked up, every time he calls or I write to him I call him King Nassir, because I can't imagine what it's like being locked up for 23 hours, what it’s like being in that prison. I always tell the mothers when you speak to your child, you have to speak life into them. I just told my son in a letter the other day that I'm proud of him. I know that sounds crazy to say that you're proud of your child being in prison. It's not the prison part. I'm proud of the fact that his mentality is changing. 

He’s always had no hair. Now, he has these long dreads. When he gets out, I just want to feel this hair of his. Like, what’s up with these dreads? That’s the first thing I want to do—put my hands through it. He's in Chicago, and the goal is to get him parole in the state of California. So we have to see what that looks like. He’s up for parole in 2025, and one of the moms in the group let me know I need to get in touch with the parole officer four months ahead of time to get him transferred to California. When he comes home, I want to employ him, because they say 50% of people in prison end up going back. So, he’ll join me as co-host on our podcast and we want to do a YouTube channel together. We want to share how he was raised with me, what type of mother I was, and how he got here. We want to be transparent with our story. We’re thinking of having a therapist on the show for both of us, because he’s not the same person and I’m not the same person. And I want to show this to other mothers and children.

I didn’t hear my son’s voice for eight months while he was in solitary, but not once did I drop the mic on my podcast or stop talking to mothers. The mothers in the group are powerful, each with their own set of experiences and emotions. When it comes to society pointing fingers, the first thing they say is, “Oh, they probably grew up in poverty, or there probably wasn't a father in the household.” That’s not the case. Some of these mothers are in two parent households. We have a mother who is a politician, with a daughter who is a prom queen, a son who is an athlete, and another son is in prison. It doesn’t look one way. And you don't have to hide behind it. One lady in the group told her neighbors her son was in the military because she was so embarrassed. But I’m not ashamed. 

We're in this boat together. No matter how rough the waters are, we’re still gonna get to the other side of victory. We're learning from each other, and we're literally leaning on each other.  We can't do this alone. We're mothers. 

The other day, I learned Damiani was finally out of the hole. He sent me a message from his tablet saying the warden let him out early. (He was supposed to be out May 20). I wasn’t going to pay for a flight to Chicago to see my son behind glass, because that felt like too much. But now that he’s out? I’m booking my flight. —As told to Abigail Glasgow

I wondered, "How did all these people seemingly already know how to raise children? How did they decide on a nanny vs. babysitter vs. daycare?"

I felt as if my recurring nightmare had come true, the one where I show up for a final exam only to realize I've missed an entire semester's worth of classes. Personally, I had no strong convictions about baby sleeping arrangements, no grand vision for our nursery—and no idea, I thought, about how to be a mother. When I was asked about my future parenting plans, my nonchalant shrug belied the panic I felt in the pit of my stomach.

But, when talk inevitably turned to child care, I was surprised to hear myself express a clear, confident opinion: "My daughter will go to daycare, definitely."

Of course she would. I knew I would keep working—I'd spent over a decade building my career, and I cared about my job, not to mention that it wasn't a financial option for me not to return to work. Daycare was a financial necessity too—it costs a fortune, yes, but a nanny costs two fortunes. Still, finances aside, I loved the idea of my kid spending her days hanging out with other kids and being cared for by a team of child care professionals, all in a setting designed for little ones to play and explore.

Why I Loved Our Daycare

I was sold on our daycare the moment my husband and I walked through the doors. In the bright, cozy playroom, a couple of babies were tucked into the lap of a teacher reading to them, a trio of toddlers was building a block tower, and the owner was playing the ukulele and singing, "She'll be coming around the mountain" to a cluster of kids dancing and rolling around the rug.

The space smelled like cinnamon oatmeal, which the group had eaten for breakfast. By the time we made it to the grassy backyard filled with playground equipment and a small garden, I was ready to hang up my coat on my own designated hook and enroll myself at the daycare. I was thrilled for my daughter—still nestled in my belly at the time—to learn and grow in this sweet environment.

I loved the idea of my kid spending her days hanging out with other kids and being cared for by a team of child care professionals, all in a setting designed for little ones to play and explore.

My maternity leave spanned a gorgeous summer. When autumn arrived and it was time to go back to work, I felt anxious about a dozen things: the commute, the breast-pumping, the challenging assignments I'd need to complete on very little sleep. But among my anxieties was not the fact of sending my daughter to daycare. I'd enjoyed several beautiful months as a full-time mother, but I didn't wish to keep at it permanently, and I didn't feel guilty about it.

When people inquired about my childcare plans, some told me they could never leave their kids like that—with strangers in a strange place. Others lamented the high cost of living, assuming that I'd be staying at home if I could. And many who'd sent their own kids to daycare responded with sympathy: A friend told me her child's first day there was the worst day of her life; she assured me it would get easier. A co-worker related that he felt so distraught after dropping off his daughter, he ended up picking her up 10 minutes later, never to return.

Most of these people meant well, and I respected their opinions and experiences. But I simply didn't share their fears, their worries, or their regrets. I believed to my core that it would be good for my daughter to have lots of caring, competent adults in her life. It takes a village, right?

As far as I was concerned, the more love and attention she received, the better. When I expressed these feelings to my therapist, she kept prompting me to dig deeper, to get in touch with the sadness or ambivalence I might feel about handing off my baby to other caretakers. I probed and probed my heart and mind, but I felt fine about it—really, truly.

The First Day of Daycare

When it came time to drop off my 4-month-old for day one of daycare, it was strange to watch her handling a rattle that wasn't ours and to see her being held by a woman whose name I'd just learned. I felt a twinge acknowledging the transition—the start of this new chapter, the end of the last one.

But as I waved goodbye, I felt confident my daughter was in fantastic hands—hands that had spent way more time than my own changing diapers and feeding bottles and singing lullabies to countless little ones. When I returned that evening, my daughter greeted me with a wide smile, and I felt a surge of happiness—this would become her place, her community.

Where We Are Today

One year later, my daughter has grown to love her teachers as much as they love her, and she has a slew of friends she eats and plays and naps with every day. When I drop her off and the aromas of bacon and eggs waft through the kitchen, she runs to grab her chair, says hello to her buddies, and gleefully waves me goodbye. She comes home each evening saying new words and demonstrating new skills (and sometimes wearing new clothes).

Most of motherhood still feels like trial and error to me. And I still find myself in conversations with parents who seem to have it all figured out, as they hold forth on screen time or discipline or school districts. But more and more I've realized that different things are important to different parents, and what's right for them isn't necessarily right for us, and vice versa. I feel strongly about this one big thing: Daycare is fantastic for our family. The rest we're figuring out as we go along.

Of course, there are days I would prefer to stay home and be with my daughter all day. And sometimes the weekday math strikes me as ridiculous: the two or three hours I have with my daughter versus the eight hours I spend in front of a computer screen in my office. But one consolation is that I've gotten to know other daycare parents who share my confidence in our childcare choice.

At pick-up the other day, a fellow mom turned to me and said, "Isn't this place amazing? Our kids are so happy here." She said it conspiratorially like we'd discovered some buried treasure. And really, I believe we have.
