In this tutorial, you will learn how to write an essay about any country.

This method will work for a paper you have to write for Sociology, Economics, a History class, or for any other discipline you can imagine.

The biggest challenge when writing an essay is coming up with material.

And the easiest way to keep your ideas flowing is to break your topic into subtopics.

Let’s see how this works.

Our subject is a country. Any country.

How would we go about breaking the idea of a country into aspects or parts?

What are some of the parts a country may have?

The easiest way to break up a topic is to use the Power of Three!

And which three aspects are relevant to any country? Which three things does any country have?

• Any country has a political aspect. Politics is all about the government. It answers the question, “What are the political forces and relationships among them?”
• Any country has a social aspect. This part of the paper will answer the question, “How do people live in this country?” The social aspect is about the people of the country.
• “What are the major economic forces in this country”
• “How do they shape the country?”
• “Is the country going through an economic hardship?”

These are three wonderful ways to discuss and to structure an essay about a country.

What else can we do?

We can talk about a country in terms of the past, the present, and the future. Let’s see what this looks like.

• The past. This section will answer the question, “How was this country in the past?”
• The present. This section will the answer the question, “How is the country doing today?”
• The future. This part will answer the question, “What can be predicted about this country?”

Again, this is a wonderful way to discuss any country.

You can combine these different aspects to form a longer essay.

In fact, you can write as long an essay as you want.

Let’s say we’re writing about a country in terms of the past, the present and the future. What could we write about in each section?

We are already using the Power of Three to create the main structure. Now we can use the Power of Three to break up each of the sections into three subsections.

• And we can talk about the political, social ,and economic aspects in section 1 about the past. In other words, how was this country in the past politically, socially, and economically?
• In the next section, we discuss how this country fares in the present politically, socially, and economically.
• And finally, what can be predicted about this country politically, socially, and economically?

Hope this makes sense.

You can actually do this differently. You can have three sections that are devoted to politics, society, and economics.

You can still use the Power of Three, and you can use it in reverse.

• In the first section , you would talk about the past, the present, and the future of this country in terms of politics.
• In the next section , you would talk about the society in the past, in the present, and in the future.
• And in the final section , you would talk about the past, the present and the future of this country’s economy.

Note that countries have a lot more different aspects to them. For example, you can discuss any country in terms of:

• Ethnic diversity

You can use any of these aspects. Just don’t forget to use the Power of Three to make your life easier 🙂

I quit my high-paying legal career and moved into my car. It was the best decision I ever made.

• On a trip to Washington, I decided to quit my career as a lawyer and travel full time.
• I moved into my car and traveled all over the country.
• It was a steep learning curve, but I followed what excited me.

Someone once told me every life boils down to five major decisions —five moments when the direction we step dictates the path we'll travel until the next juncture. If it's true, I made one of those decisions in 2015 in the western reaches of Washington State . I was 33 years old and had just summitted Mount Rainier, the first glaciated peak I'd ever climbed and the most adventurous thing I'd ever done.

As the sun crested the horizon, I sat at a diner in a small town. Wrapping my hands around my coffee, I thought about the rainforest I planned to explore that day as my eyes looked out the window toward the highway's long white lines. Those lines could take me anywhere. Anywhere was a long way from the law firm at the edge of Wall Street , where I spent 70-plus hours a week. A long way from the two computer screens and never-ending to-do lists that dissolved days into weeks into months. A long way from the discontent permeating my life.

Almost seven years into my career , I'd just paid off my law school debt, was on track for partnership, and was deeply unhappy. It wasn't that I didn't enjoy the work. But the work — representing financial institutions being investigated by the government — didn't give my life meaning. It was a job — a good job, but a job. And I'd made that job my entire life. I'd prioritized it over all else, including my health and, most recently, the birth of my sister's first child. A moment I'd never get back.

In that small town, gazing at the highway, I calculated how many nights of campsite fees would equal one month's rent — 240. It'd been over a decade since I owned a car, and I'd never camped alone. But by the time the scrambled eggs arrived, I'd decided to quit my job , move into a car, and live on the road, exploring America's wild places.

Preparation for my new life took some time

Over the next eight months, I quietly prepared. In a box, I collected places I wanted to visit. In a spreadsheet, I budgeted what I'd need for a year on the road, followed by another year of what I hoped would be starting anew.

Beyond the practical preparation steps, I also worked on getting comfortable with uncertainty. Since high school , I'd followed a linear path — college to law school to law firm — and I'd long defined success through external markers like salary and prestige. That rigidity stifled other parts of myself. What would happen if I gave those parts room to grow?

Letting go of long-held notions, reinforced by a culture that prizes material wealth over all else, scared me.

A friend shared this advice: Go to what excites you, and you'll be OK. That became my motto. I quit my job and headed out on the road.

By April 2016, I'd downsized from a one-bedroom apartment to a used station wagon and was pitching a tent along the Colorado River in Utah. It was the first night I camped alone, and I barely slept. In an arc over my head were "defense" tools: a flashlight, keys with a panic button, and another flashlight.

Way out of my comfort zone , I had no idea what I was doing, but I kept going, kept trusting I'd figure it out.

It turned out to be the best decision for me

Day by day, I did figure it out. Soon, I met others who were living out of their cars. Soon, I stopped arcing my head with defense tools. Soon, I slept better on dirt than anywhere else.

Over the following months, I opened myself in new ways. I made friends at trailheads and on trails, went backpacking or rock-climbing with those friends, and ran for miles in the wild without a watch or any goal other than exploration.

I made many mistakes. After a storm detoured me on a run, I spent the night in a stranger's car. Through those mistakes, I learned to trust in the uncertainty.

When I drove west, I had no itinerary, but I held tight to one plan: In a spreadsheet, I'd mapped out how to climb every 14,000-foot peak in Colorado; there are almost 60. The goal quieted the lingering voice, telling me I was "wasting" time. If I climbed those mountains, just look how productive I would be. By late July, I'd abandoned the spreadsheet.

After a life of checking boxes, I started to find a different sort of success by chasing curiosity and going to what excites me. Eight years later, I no longer live in my car, I didn't return to law, and I'm still chasing what excites me — and still building a life filled with purpose.

The gift of living on the road wasn't the answers it gave me but how it taught me to be comfortable with the questions.

The lack of light pollution at night time is another wonderful aspect of countryside living. Being able to gaze up at the beautiful stars on a clear evening is a magical experience, something I definitely wouldn’t trade.”

Ellis explores aspects of rural living based on her own childhood in Suffolk, England. She remembers the inconveniences she experienced and, in contrast, recalls the peace and beauty she observed in the countryside and the lessons she learned there. She ultimately concludes that after having lived in both the country and the city, she would not trade the life of her childhood; however, she would also be comfortable in a small village with some semblance of urban living.

“Life brings simple pleasures. Simple pleasures are the most satisfying that life has to offer. The morning coffee, being outside under a warm blue sky, hanging out with loved ones after dinner, a beautiful view, having a good laugh, sleeping in on a rainy day. There are lots of things to be satisfied about. The province life is living a simple but carefree life.”

This reflection is author Carol Padua Montero’s retelling of the time that she and her partner Neil visited her childhood home in Aurora province in the Philippines. She recalls their activities, their food, and the simple joys of being with family and nature. She emphasizes the easygoing manner of provincial Filipinos: despite not having as much, they live a happy life. 

“On our 300-cow dairy, we are in full swing chopping and baling hay, which means long days full of fieldwork and scrambling to fit chores and milking in between sun-up and sun-down. One of the best parts? Watching my nieces and nephews soak in all the craziness in the most innocent of ways. Their disbelief at how tall the corn is, how massive the pile of silage gets, or how much a calf’s tongue tickles as it licks them reminds me just how amazing our job is.”

Molly Schmitt describes her life as a farmer and as a “farm kid” in the countryside, where she has spent her whole life. She details her daily routine with her family and her children, but the most dominant part of her essay is about her own childhood. She recalls ten childhood memories that she cherishes dearly, involving family, food, and, of course, the farm. 

“There is a beautiful sandy beach on your doorstep, replete with endless rockpools. And all you have to do is to fling open the front door and walk for five minutes, and you’re on top of a cliff, with 180-degree views of the sea, salt wind in your face.”

Ley’s reflection on country life is quite introspective, as she remembers her life by the sea as a child, particularly the house she was raised in. She remembers how she felt in the serene, idyllic setting, exploring both the highs and lows of living there. But she comes to feel conflicted over the house as her mother considers selling it. She ultimately resigns to the idea of having to let go of that house after so many years, teaching us all a lesson about moving on.

With the passage of time and a century every nation" changes to some extent. The country achieves success or makes itself developed through working hard in a very much planned and practical way. Coping with time and century, we have already entered a new millennium.

Most of the countries of the world in the meantime have taken their own strategy to face the odds of the new millennium for changing a lot of the people and developing of the country.

History: Bangladesh is a small country in South Asia. It was under a colonial rule for 200 years. It became independent in 1971 through Liberation War. During 1971-1990 we had little political stability. Bangladesh includes in the list of least developed countries.

So as a poor country she faces more problems than the world does in the new millennium. The problems and prospects of Bangladesh in the new millennium may be the following.

Poverty: Poverty means pauperism, a situation for which man cannot meet the basic needs of life. It also means a situation where the living standard of the people is below normal. Poverty is a basic problem of Bangladesh. She is one of the poorest countries of the world. So, it is clear that poverty is going to be one of the great problems of Bangladesh in the new millennium.

If we do not remove poverty there would be no development In this situation the government has taken various measures to eliminate poverty from the country. Side by side the non-government organizations are also engaged in various programs for poverty alleviation.

Electricity: Electricity is an indispensable part of modern life. Proper supply of electricity is a pre-condition for economic development of any country. In the new millennium, we are looking for alternative sources. Bangladesh has a long history of the shortage of electricity. 1994, we had 134 days of load shedding for 434 hours.

Then the maximum shortage was 520 MW and the minimum was 29 MW. In January-June 1997 we had 174 days of power shortages and load-shedding occurred for 2165 hours.

This has now slightly improved in the first of new millennium. In the fifth Five Year Plan, the government has planned to increase power generation capacity to 5132 MW. This is nearly 53 percent increasing If we successfully implement the Fifth Five Year Plan. Bangladesh would like to achieve a 7 percent growth rate in the economy ensuring our development activities in the new millennium.

An urban country: Bangladesh is mainly a rural country. More than 80% of her population living in villages. But in the new millennium, it is going to be an urban country. As cities offer more opportunities for employment, business, education, health, and other amenities more and more, the rural people are to migrate to the cities. Population growth, shortage of cultivable land, natural calamities like river erosion, flood etc. are the main causes of migration to the cities. It is high time in the new millennium to take Stian necessary steps to control urban migration.

In the field of information technology: Information Technology is a part of our life in the new millennium. We cannot think of our modern life without it. In order to get better services and more benefits from the new millennium, the government of Bangladesh is going to set up an information technology village very close to Dhaka city. This would be similar to the software technology parks in India. The future of information technology in Bangladesh is bright.

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology secured the 24th position in the reputed universities in the USA. In the ACM programming contest on the Internet, the performance of Bangladesh, particularly from (BUET) performed better than those from other countries.

In Agriculture: Bangladesh is mainly agricultural land. More than 80% of her people depend on agriculture. Agriculture will be another thrust area in the new millennium. At present, our agriculture is facing the number of problems such as rising salinity, declining soil fertility, soil erosion in the hills etc.

It is high time to take the necessary steps to improve the agricultural section. Otherwise, we fail to face impending new millennium problems. In this situation, high varieties may become the best choice of the new millennium like a country Bangladesh.

Foreign Investment: Bangladesh is a country which badly needs foreign investment for her rapid economic growth and development. Foreign investment helps supply necessary capital to set up industries, ensure the quality of production. The domestic market of the country where investment is made is expended.

New millennium opens a new chapter for investment. The Bangladesh government has taken various steps to attract foreign voltmeters in Agriculture, Fisheries, Agro-based Industries, Leather, Textile, Tourism, Energy etc. The prospects of investment acility of Bangladesh in the new millennium is bright.

Conclusion: New millennium has opened a new chapter for every country. We expect that Bangladesh will march ahead with the world community for achieving the goal. Secondly, Rani Lakshmi Bai was a great freedom fighter. I have learned so many things from this empowering woman. She fought for the country despite so many hardships. A mother never gave up her country because of her child, instead took him to the battlefield to fight against injustice. Moreover, she was so inspiring in numerous ways.

Next, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose comes in my list. He led the Indian National Army to show the power of India to the British. His famous line remains to be ‘give me your blood and I will give you freedom.’

Finally, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was also one of the greatest leaders. Despite being from a rich family, he gave up the easy life and fought for India’s freedom. He was imprisoned a number of times but that did not stop him from fighting against injustice. He was a great inspiration to many.

An Old Bangladeshi Reflex Threatens Its Revolution

In Bangladesh, we are experts at erasing history.

Ever since our young nation was born 53 years ago in a traumatic war of liberation from Pakistan, historical amnesia and censorship have afflicted Bangladeshis like a chronic illness. When a regime is toppled, its successor moves quickly to erase the symbols and legacy of the previous one as if it had never existed.

That is why, for decades, when one of the two political parties that have dominated Bangladesh — the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party — was in power, the other would often boycott Parliament or refuse to participate in elections it alleged were rigged. There has never been a healthy relationship between the people in power and those who oppose them. Party was always placed before country.

This has been a curse, preventing solid democratic institutions from flourishing in Bangladesh and making our politics fractious, hateful and peppered with violence and counterviolence.

The unexpected revolution that toppled the increasingly autocratic and corrupt rule of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina this month offers Bangladesh a chance to break free of this cycle. What makes this revolution unprecedented and so meaningful is that it was a grass-roots movement led by idealistic university students, not one of the warring main political parties. As a Bangladeshi, I am watching with jubilation.

Yet, I also worry that the old Bangladeshi reflex to expunge the past is kicking in.

Just a few weeks ago, when visitors flew into Dhaka, the capital, they were greeted at the airport by an enormous mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Ms. Hasina’s father, who was the leader of Bangladesh’s 1971 independence movement and the nation’s founding figure. In 1975, when he was president, he was assassinated in a military coup along with most of his family. The mural’s caption welcomed travelers to “Mujib’s Bangladesh.”

Since Ms. Hasina’s overthrow, portraits and statues of Sheikh Mujib are being defaced and taken down across the country. His former home, which had become a museum to his memory, was looted and set on fire . Ms. Hasina’s declaration of Aug. 15 — the anniversary of her father’s assassination — as a national day of mourning was canceled .

“Dharawal and Yuin Artist Alison Page has developed a sculptural Acknowledgement of Country for NSW Parliament. For Page, what better way to honour ancient land than with “a slice of Country” itself. Supported by Culture and Heritage Consultant and Dharawal/Gumbaynggirr woman Rowena Welsh-Jarrett and Ceramicist Simon Reece, the collaborating artists have created a stratified pillar that embodies the deep time history of the cultural landscape around Parliament House. Each visible layer is composed of natural elements – earth, stone, ochre, shell, and ash – that reveal their colours, imprints and textures to the surface. The resulting bands celebrate features of the local landscape that are significant to its First Nations Custodians. The artist team has given a conceptually rich and robust voice to the layers of living histories that the wider community has come to inherit.”​

A stateme​nt of significance: reconciliation between cultures  

On August 21, 2024, the Governor of NSW, with representatives from Aboriginal communities and the Presiding Officers, unveiled an Acknowledgement of Country sculpture in the native garden in front of Parliament House​​.  This was in collaboration with Metro and La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Councils, Dharawal and Yuin artist Alison Page, Dharawal Cultural Consultant Rowena Welsh-Jarrett, and ceramic artist Simon Reece.  

Standing approximately 150 cm tall, the sculpture features multiple ceramic layers of varying depths that represent the layers of country.

The plaque to acknowledge the sculpture reads:  

The Parliament of New South Wales stands on the traditional lands of the Gadigal people. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present. We proudly acknowledge all the Aboriginal peoples of New South Wales and honour their enduring connection to the lands, waters and sky of the State.  

The representatives of the people of New South Wales gather from various Aboriginal lands across the State to meet in this Parliament. May the decisions made within these walls reflect our commitment to fostering a spirit of reconciliation and respect.  

Parliament staff participated in two workshops in Blackheath, as part of the creative process, which has been documented in a mini-documentary capturing the project's journey that will be live on this page in the next few weeks​.  The artwork aims to foster and symbolise reconciliation between cultures.   The fabrication and installation of the artwork was made possible by Simon Reece Ceramics, Tilt Industrial Design, Entrenched Landscape and Design, Steensen Varming, and Star Electrical.
