Traineeships abroad for students

Erasmus+ supports traineeships (work placements, internships) abroad at any workplace for students currently enrolled in higher education institutions in Programme Countries at short-cycle Bachelor and Master level as well as for doctoral candidates. These opportunities are also open to recent graduates.

By doing a traineeship abroad, you can greatly improve your knowledge, skills and competences that employers are looking for. Also, one in ten of Erasmus+ trainees have created their own company!

Where to look

The Erasmus Intern Traineeship Portal , developed by the Erasmus Student Network, can help you find Erasmus+ traineeships opportunities from companies.

How to apply

You can also apply through the international or Erasmus+ office of your higher education institution.

Good to know

Access to Erasmus+ Online Language Support will help you learn the language used at your workplace.

Benefits for students and recent graduates

  • develop entrepreneurial and creative skills highly valued by future employers
  • improve foreign language skills, interpersonal and inter-cultural teamwork skills
  • gain a deeper understanding of another country and culture

Benefits for companies

  • a trainee can provide a new international perspective, innovative ideas and active support
  • a trainee brings fresh enthusiasm and increased competitiveness and innovation
  • getting trainees' insights into their home culture can open doors to new markets and expand the business
  • enhance competences at the company: the trainee learns from employees, but employees can also learn from an international trainee through interaction with different languages and up-to-date IT skills

Companies can post their traineeships offers on the Erasmus Intern Traineeship Portal .

Traineeships abroad can receive Erasmus+ support from 2 to 12 months.

Students and recent graduates can also do a blended mobility, which means combining a short physical stay abroad (between 5 and 30 days) with a virtual period.

Trainees can also combine an Erasmus+ traineeship with a study period abroad .

Erasmus+ traineeships are open to any student enrolled in a higher education institution holding an Erasmus+ Charter for Higher Education .

The traineeship must be relevant for the degree-related learning and personal development needs and, wherever possible, be integrated in the study programme.

A traineeship can take place at any organisation located anywhere in the world (with the exception of EU institutions, bodies and agencies).

Financial support

Erasmus+ grant levels are published in the Erasmus+ Programme Guide .

Final thesis abroad

You can potentially also write your final thesis abroad.

There are two options for doing this:

  • Either during a semester abroad at a host university
  • or at a foreign company.
  • Ask our partner universities or a company abroad if you can write your final thesis there with the support of supervisor. Alternatively, perhaps your professors might be able to suggest useful contacts.
  • Sometimes there are also specific vacancies or offers, which we then publish here.

You can apply for funding towards writing your final thesis abroad:

  • either Erasmus funding if you will be writing your thesis at an Erasmus partner university or in a European company
  • or a PROMOS grant if you are going to write your thesis at a host university that isn’t covered by Erasmus, including outside Europe
  • or a grant from “ hochschule international ” if you don’t have sufficient financial means and aren’t receiving a PROMOS scholarship at the same time.

What should you do?

  • Register your final thesis in time (i.e. before you plan to go abroad) with Academic Registry;
  • Find out what regulations apply, as a final thesis cannot be recognised in the same straightforward way that modules or courses taken at foreign universities are;
  • Make sure that a professor at Kempten University of Applied Sciences is willing to supervise your thesis;
  • Get in touch with the International Office to discuss your plans and resolves any issues.

Degree project abroad

As a KTH student you can carry out your degree project abroad - both on a undergraduate and graduate level. Students who do their thesis within Europe can apply for Erasmus scholarships just like for regular exchange studies.

1. Start planning in time

Your degree project is usually carried out during the spring semester of your third or fifth year. You can complete your degree project abroad at both the Bachelor's and Master's level, even if you have been on exchange studies before. The important thing is that you start planning in time.

2. Think about where you want to carry out your degree project

Depending on where in the world you want to carry out your degree project, you can apply for various scholarships to fund additional expenses such as travel and accommodation.

3. Find a suitable project

Finding an exciting project that can be used as a degree project need not be difficult.

Finding your project

4. Follow the instructions on degree projects from the school

A degree project abroad carried out just like a degree project in Sweden. Among other things, you must have a supervisor and examiner at KTH and the project must be approved by your school. It is important that you follow the school's instructions on how a degree project at the school is to be carried out.

5. Look over the economy and apply for scholarship

To carry out the degree project abroad rarely lead to increased expenses, but you should start working out the financial situation as soon as possible with financial aid and scholarships.

6. Prepare your language

In order to manage you studies abroad, you may need to improve your language skills. KTH has a wide range of credit-giving language courses, language partner programmes and language cafes we recommend you take part of.

Erasmus+ Programme

Programme overview.

The Erasmus+ programme was launched by the European Commission in 1987. It supports the objectives of European education policy, promotes the modernisation, internationalisation and digitalisation of higher education in Europe, enhances the attractiveness of the EU as a place to study and research, and contributes to the sustainable development of higher education in third countries. It also strengthens, above all, the international competences, personal development and employability of all participants.

Mobility measures are the origin and core of the Erasmus+ programme. German higher education institutions have a wide range of options at their disposal for promoting the mobility of students, teachers and university staff within and outside Europe. In addition, a wide range of cooperation and partnership programmes offer extensive opportunities for institutional exchange between higher education institutions in Europe and worldwide.

Erasmus+ Programme 2021-2027

The following Erasmus+ programme lines (in higher education) exist from 2021 ( Website ):

  • Mobility of Individuals (KA131, formerly KA103)
  • Mobility consortia (KA130)
  • Mobility with partner countries (KA171, formerly KA107)
  • Cooperation Partnerships (KA220, formerly Strategic Partnerships (KA203))
  • Erasmus Mundus (Erasmus Mundus Design Measures, Erasmus Mundus Joint Master)
  • Teacher Academies
  • Jean Monnet Actions (Jean Monnet Actions in higher education, Jean Monnet Actions in other fields of education and training, Jean Monnet Policy Debate)
  • Alliances for Innovation (Lot 1: Alliances for Education and Business, Lot 2: Alliances for Sectoral Cooperation for Skills Development)
  • European Universities: TU Berlin is a coordinating member of the European netwok ENHANCE .
  • Capacity Building Projects in Higher Education (Strand 1 - Promoting access to cooperation in higher education, Strand 2 - Partnerships for Change in Higher Education, Strand 3 - Structural Reform Projects)
  • European Experimental Measures
  • Social Inclusion Projects

Here   you can find an overview of all Erasmus+ actions:

  • Higher education
  • School education
  • Vocational education and Adult education

Further information from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) can be found here .

In 2021, a new 7-year programme generation started. In addition to the already well-known focus on credit recognition, the new Erasmus+ programme generation 2021-2027 puts digitalisation, inclusion and diversity, Erasmus+ "Green" and participation in democratic life as horizontal themes in the programme's focus.

Digitisation The digitalisation of the Erasmus+ programme consists of several components. On the one hand, the digitalisation of the administration with Erasmus without Papers (EWP) is on the agenda and the digital link with all European Erasmus+ higher education institutions, on the other hand, new funding opportunities such as "Blended Mobility" and "Blended Intensive Programmes" will be launched.

Social participation Inclusion and diversity are key themes of the Erasmus+ programme generation 2021-2027. With a variety of measures at different levels, the programme aims to make a significant contribution to more equal opportunities in all areas of education.

Erasmus+ "Green" With the aim of integrating Erasmus+ into the European Green Deal, the programme's content and scope aims to unlock the potential for environmental change and reduce its environmental impact.

Participation in democratic life Strengthening European identity and promoting the active participation of individuals and civil society in democratic processes are crucial for the future of the European Union. The Erasmus+ Generation 2021-2027 programme therefore aims to help increase people's interest in and knowledge about the European Union.

Recognition The Recommendation on Recognition recommends that Member States take the necessary steps by 2025 to ensure "automatic mutual recognition" without having to go through a separate recognition procedure. After prior agreement in the Learning Agreement and upon proof by the Transcript of Records, full recognition of their achievements should be made possible for funded students in accordance with European Credit Transfer. The digital Learning Agreement will support the process of automatic recognition. Starting in June 2021, all intra-European student mobilities must have a digital learning agreement by the academic year 2022/2023 at the latest.

Erasmus+ mobility grants & Top Ups

Monthly grant.

The Erasmus+ scholarship usually consists of two parts:

  • Exchange place at the partner institution with Erasmus+ status and
  • depending on the budgetary situation, a monthly PARTIAL grant for the mobility abroad.

The grant is usually awarded for a maximum of 4 months (=120 days, if studying abroad for one semester) or 8 months (=240 days, if studying abroad for two semesters) (4 months, if studying abroad for one trimester; 6 months, if studying abroad for two trimesters: 8 months, if studying abroad for three trimesters). The grant is intended to help cover living costs and is financed and determined by the European Commission. TU Berlin is not responsible for it in any way.

Country group 2 (from 2024/25): Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Cyprus Monthly grant, Group 2: 540€                                     Country group 3 (from 2024/25): Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey Monthly grant, Group 3: 540€

Switzerland has not been an Erasmus+ program country since 2014/15. Nevertheless, TU Berlin students can study at Swiss partner universities without paying tuition fees. However, you generally receive the mobility grant from the respective Swiss partner university instead of TU Berlin.

Beginning winter semester 2022/23, Erasmus+ students with fewer opportunities can receive additional funding amounting to EUR 250 per month (EUR 8.33 per day) in addition to the mobility grant. You can only submit an application for additional funding through one of the following funding lines:

Those who wish to apply for a Top up should meet one of the following criteria:

  • Working students -  can receive the Top up if they have to give up a job for the stay abroad, in which they have worked for at least 6 continuous months prior to the mobility and have earned between 450€ and 850€ net on average per month. The TU Berlin has decided to allow an averaged calculation of the income, provided that the net income averaged over 6 consecutive months is above 450€ and below 850€ per month as a result. -  The period in which the job was held should be within a time window of 6 months before the start of the mobility. -  Termination of employment is not a prerequisite for receiving the top up, the employment contract can also be paused. You are also not allowed to take a job during your stay abroad.
  • First-generation students -  Students whose two parents or one single parent do not have a degree from a (technical) higher education institution or a comparable degree (for example, from a university of cooperative education) can apply for Top up. -  Whether a degree is considered an academic degree can usually be looked up on the website Hochschulkompass of the HRK as well as on the website of the Foundation Accreditation Council. -  In the case of foreign degrees, students must be able to prove that they do not count as an academic degree.
  • Students who start their mobility with child/ren -  and take at least one child with them during their entire stay can receive a Top up regardless of the number of children. -  If both parents go on a stay abroad, double sponsorship of a child is excluded. If both parents take two or more children with them, both can receive a grant.
  • Students with a chronic illness -  can apply for the Top up if they have additional financial needs abroad due to a chronic illness.
  • Students with a disability -  who have a degree of disability of 20 or more can also apply for Top up if they have additional financial needs abroad due to their disability.

Additional funding for “green” travel

Erasmus+ students travelling sustainably can apply for additional travel days (max. 2 days for outward journey and max. 2 days for return journey). The special funding of €50 has unfortunately been cancelled by the EU Commission (from 2024/25).

The "green travel" option is intended to increase the number of mobilities with more environmentally friendly means of transport and reduce the ecological footprint of the Erasmus+ programme. The prerequisite for receiving travel days is that you travel to and from the host university using the most environmentally friendly means of transport possible. Travelling by plane, boat or car alone is not considered environmentally friendly.

Thesis Abroad

Writing your thesis overseas allows you to gain insight into a field of specialization while developing your intercultural skills and competencies. Students in both, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, can arrange to write their final thesis abroad. But how and where to start? This section adresses the topic in a more detailed way, so you can plan individually.

If you have any further questions about writing your thesis abroad or would like to get some general advice on your options, please contact Martina von Imhoff .

Current calls

You can find current calls of our partner universities and research institutions on the left in the menu bar .

Two Supervisors Necessary

When writing your thesis abroad, you will need two supervisors : one at TUM CIT Informatics and one at the university or research institution abroad. Finding a supervisor is an individual process of negotiation and research, therefore we recommend contacting a potential TUM chair at an early stage ( approx. 4-6 months in advance of your intended stay abroad ) to clarify whether there is a supervisor available. In this way, you can also receive recommendations for the choice of a partner university.

The rules and submission deadlines of TUM CIT Informatics also apply to theses abroad. Often, the project abroad can also be planned as a research stay, i.e. not necessarily as a thesis. This means that the thesis must be registered at TUM at a suitable time, but not always or not at all at the institution abroad.

Tasks of the TUM Supervisor

A thesis outside TUM must always be supervised by a professor of TUM CIT Informatics, who officially represents the topic and thus registers the thesis with the examination board and awards the grade at the end. Supervision is often provided by the chair through doctoral students and postdocs.

It is possible, of course, that a close cooperation with the institution outside TUM can evolve and that a grade proposal can be obtained. Please note that the date of the presentation of the thesis will also be requested, ideally the official supervisor is also (virtually) present at the presentation.

Self-organized Stays Abroad without Exchange Program

Theses abroad can always be written without participating in a specific exchange program, after individual consultation with the respective chair or supervisors on both sides.

Although this procedure requires more personal initiative and organizational talent , it is certainly an attractive option for realizing a stay abroad at the university or research institution of your choice. It is best to contact the chair of your choice directly to clarify the respective conditions.

SIROP Research Network – Projects for Students

To find a suitable thesis, you can also take a look at the website of the SIROP Research Network. Many renowned universities and research institutions (e.g. TUM, ETH, LMU, CERN etc.) publish calls on the SIROP website .

Final Theses within the ERASMUS+ Programme (SMP)

For projects within the EU or in the associated countries (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Turkey), there is the ERASMUS+ Internship Programme . You can also use ERASMUS+ Internship to receive funding for final theses as research internships. Any European university is eligible! You do not have to adhere to the Informatics partner catalog. You can apply up to four weeks before the start of your stay abroad.

Please note: The program only covers financial support, it’s not a placement!

You have a total of 12 ERASMUS+ funding months per study period (i.e. per Bachelor's and Master's degree). You can divide these between ERASMUS+ Studies and ERASMUS+ Internship.

Research stays can only be funded via ERASMUS+ Studies , if you have already studied at the partner university in the previous semester, i.e. you would have to stay for two semesters.

Final Theses within TUMexchange

Normally, you do not have to pay tuition fees for a research stay at a university abroad. Since the TUMexchange program is not linked to a scholarship for living expenses, but only to the waiver of tuition fees, study projects with a specific choice of course are preferred for the program . An application for a thesis via TUMexchange as a pure research project is not recommended due to the different target group, and additionally due to the early TUMexchange application deadline (exceptions: Japan and Israel). Individual organization is the better option here. However, you may be able to benefit from existing contacts and inquire about exceptions by contacting Martina von Imhoff and/or coming to the consultation hour.

Scholarships for Writing a Thesis Abroad

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides direct funding to universities via the PROMOS program, which can be used to support short-term projects abroad , such as final theses or internships. Interested students, including international full-time students, can apply to TUM Global & Alumni Office for the PROMOS program by May 31 (projects in the second semester) or November 30 (projects in the first semester) of each year.

In addition, the DAAD offers the International Research Stays for Computer Scientists (IFI) program. Students and doctoral candidates in the field of Computer Science/Informatics can do research abroad for a period of one to six months as part of their Master's thesis or doctorate . The duration of the scholarship can be chosen flexibly so that the stay abroad can be optimally integrated into the current research plan and career planning. As the scholarship funds have already been exhausted, unfortunately applications are not possible at the moment.

Another funding possibility are the scholarships of TUM for study projects abroad. Preference is given to projects outside Europe. The application deadline is always the end of September retroactively for the previous months of the current calendar year and the upcoming quarter. It is therefore possible to apply reactively for projects in the first half of the calendar year! International students can also apply.

For projects within the EU or the associated countries (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Turkey), the ERASMUS+ Programme is a possibility for funding (see above). You have a total of 12 months of funding per study phase (i.e. per Bachelor's and Master's degree). You can divide these between ERASMUS+ studies and ERASMUS+ internship.

You can find a very useful list of possible scholarship providers on the international scholarship website of the TUM Global & Alumni Office as well as on the general TUM scholarship website . German Foundation Index’ (Deutscher Stiftungsindex) website and mystipendium.de are also recommended. For more details on the funding programs, please refer to the information on the respective pages.
