The Library received all Ph.D. and M.Phil. theses and M.Sc. (Regulation 3.5.) theses up to 30 September 2016. Theses submitted after this date are kept in the University of Essex Research Repository . We do not normally hold dissertations and theses connected with other degrees - the exception being LL.Ms. All of our theses are kept in Store and can only be consulted in the library - you'll need to use the online store request form or fill in a form at the library helpdesk to request them.

In my dissertation, I investigate parallels, whether fictitious, perceived or remembered, between the Nazi system of concentration camps and human built environment as filtered through the survivors’ traumatic memory of the camps. By building on existing, albeit unsystematic, research by historians and art historians on the planning and architecture of Nazi concentration camps in relationship to National Socialist city planning and architecture, I analyze the uses and effects of these parallels in French literature and film produced by former political deportees. I further explore their role in establishing a distinctive relationship between reader and text in testimonial literature, as well as their role in shaping the postwar memory of the camps.

Situated somewhere between the fields of literary criticism, intellectual history, cultural history, philosophy and theology, my dissertation will study the development of French moraliste writing from the late seventeenth to the end of the eighteenth century; from the works of renowned seventeenth-century moralists such as Blaise Pascal, François de La Rochefoucauld, Jean de La Fontaine, Jean de La Bruyère, and the Marquise de Sablé, to those of eighteenth-century authors such as the Marquis de Vauvenargues, Alexis Piron, Antoine de Rivarol, Nicolas Chamfort, and Joseph Joubert. I aim to re-examine the idea that moraliste writing arose chiefly from the late-seventeenth century political context of aristocratic writers disillusioned by their loss of feudal power under absolute monarchy, and theological context of these writers' Augustinian or "Jansenist" beliefs. Contrary to these assumptions' basis in the biographies of the great moralistes of the late seventeenth century, moraliste writing continued to thrive throughout the eighteenth century in a diverse array of political and religious (or even irreligious) contexts - Royalists and Jacobins; aristocrats and bourgeois; Catholics, neo-Epicureans and neo-Stoics. What, then, motivated writers with such disparate views to use a style typified by the earlier moralistes? How was moraliste writing influenced by the social milieu with which it has become inextricably linked, the aristocratic salons organised chiefly by female hostesses? And can these writers' often cynical witticisms inspire us to moral improvement, as individuals or as a society? These are just some of the questions that I hope to address.

"Textual Mobility: The Medieval Journeys of Twelfth-Century Anglo-French Texts"

Works written in Plantagenet territory in the twelfth century traveled away from their site of production in both time and space, sometimes being copied centuries later in distant lands. Enthusiasts have long investigated the causes and contexts of the burgeoning literary production in the espace Plantagenet , but the medieval textual afterlife of texts produced in the Angevin empire has yet to be coherently studied. My study addresses this gap by tracing the mobility of a cluster of twelfth-century texts. These romans traveled between and across what we now perceive as nations, the lines of their itineraries knitting together a literary and historical past shared across Western Europe – including Britain.  I hypothesize that the transnational and enduring popularity of certain works has to do with their usefulness as sources of history in the medieval mode, when res digna memoria could be considered equal in value to res gestae . The routes texts took out of the Angevin empire created a map of shared knowledge and values validated by a common past.

Text and Image in Dante's Commedia and its Early Modern Illustrations (1481-1596)

My dissertation examines the early printed illustrated editions of Dante's Commedia, from 1481-1596. It explores the presence-- and absence-- of direct genealogical links between these engravings and the illuminated manuscripts and drawings of the Commedia that precede them. It also discusses the narratological implications of and the varying approaches to the transition from text to image among these volumes, and it examines what we can learn about early modern readers of Dante's poem through a study of the production and the use of these particular illustrated editions.

Italian Visual Poetry’s Evolution from the Avant-garde to the End of the Twentieth Century

My dissertation focuses on Italian Visual Poetry’s evolution in the twentieth century, integrating traditional criticism with semiotic and technological aesthetics, visual culture, and cognitive sciences. Moving in the hybrid space of intermedia representation, I will examine poetic works in which a trespassing dynamic blurs the distinction between art and text, interacting with different types of creativity: Futurist metal books ( L’anguria lirica , 1934); object-poems (like Balestrini’s Il sasso appeso , 1961, or Niccolai’s Poema&oggetto , 1974); collage poems (pursued in the 60s by Stelio M. The figures and spaces present in the works of Verga, De Roberto and Tomasi di Lampedusa will play a significant role in this inquiry into the minor protagonists of Sicilian literature.

CHIARA TREBAIOCCHI Re-schooling Society. Pedagogia come forma di lotta nella vita e nell’opera di Franco Fortini (The Battle for Education in the Life and Works of Franco Fortini)

My dissertation focuses on Franco Fortini and his ideas on pedagogy, school and education. As one of Italy’s most prominent writers and poets of the XXth Century, Fortini’s works have been recognized and studied for their literary, social and cultural value, also in relation to other important authors and events of contemporary Italian literature (such as Elio Vittorini and the Politecnico; the years of Quaderni Piacentini; Pier Paolo Pasolini; Italo Calvino). I will consider Fortini’s writings through the lens of his pedagogical ideas, strictly connected to his Marxist and Gramscian ideology. Fortini’s scholastic anthologies, the refusal of “specialized knowledge”, the role of teachers in the school (in parallel with that of the intellectuals in society), the urgent need to preserve and pass to the younger generations an historical memory and a tradition as a way to protect cultural values and the humanities in times of crisis, the reflection on communicative writings: these are only some of the topics that I will discuss in my dissertation while analyzing the educational dimension in the life and work of Franco Fortini.

Speech-language pathologists' perspectives on working with couples impacted by aphasia.

This thesis explores speech-language pathologists' (SLPs) perceptions of, experiences with, and perceived barriers to providing psychosocial support to couples impacted by aphasia. A survey was conducted, with 50 responses analyzed. All participants were licensed SLPs who work in the United States and have people with aphasia (PWA) on their caseload. Participants responded to a portion of survey questions, viewed five short videos of Relationship-Centered Communication Partner Training (RC-CPT), then answered a portion of repeated questions to measure the change in perceived confidence, comfort, knowledge, and experience. Results indicate that SLPs perceive counseling to be within their scope of practice and are aware of the psychological distress experienced by PWA. Additionally, SLPs reported increased confidence in counseling couples impacted by aphasia after watching the RC-CPT video vignettes. However, reported barriers to providing counseling to PWA and their significant others included lack of significant other availability, and time/caseload pressures. SLPs reported greater comfort in tasks such as coaching couples on communication strategies and less comfort on topics such as addressing relationship roles and responsibilities or helping couples set goals regarding relationship roles and responsibilities. These findings have implications for SLP training and practice, emphasizing the importance of addressing the psychosocial needs of both individuals and couples impacted by aphasia. Further research is needed to determine the impact of counseling training for SLPs and the development of effective training to increase SLPs' confidence and comfort in counseling couples affected by aphasia.

Researchers use large language models to help robots navigate

Someday, you may want your home robot to carry a load of dirty clothes downstairs and deposit them in the washing machine in the far-left corner of the basement. The robot will need to combine your instructions with its visual observations to determine the steps it should take to complete this task.

For an AI agent, this is easier said than done. Current approaches often utilize multiple hand-crafted machine-learning models to tackle different parts of the task, which require a great deal of human effort and expertise to build. These methods, which use visual representations to directly make navigation decisions, demand massive amounts of visual data for training, which are often hard to come by.

To overcome these challenges, researchers from MIT and the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab devised a navigation method that converts visual representations into pieces of language, which are then fed into one large language model that achieves all parts of the multistep navigation task.

Rather than encoding visual features from images of a robot’s surroundings as visual representations, which is computationally intensive, their method creates text captions that describe the robot’s point-of-view. A large language model uses the captions to predict the actions a robot should take to fulfill a user’s language-based instructions.

Because their method utilizes purely language-based representations, they can use a large language model to efficiently generate a huge amount of synthetic training data.

While this approach does not outperform techniques that use visual features, it performs well in situations that lack enough visual data for training. The researchers found that combining their language-based inputs with visual signals leads to better navigation performance.

“By purely using language as the perceptual representation, ours is a more straightforward approach. Since all the inputs can be encoded as language, we can generate a human-understandable trajectory,” says Bowen Pan, an electrical engineering and computer science (EECS) graduate student and lead author of a paper on this approach .

Pan’s co-authors include his advisor, Aude Oliva, director of strategic industry engagement at the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, MIT director of the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, and a senior research scientist in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL); Philip Isola, an associate professor of EECS and a member of CSAIL; senior author Yoon Kim, an assistant professor of EECS and a member of CSAIL; and others at the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab and Dartmouth College. The research will be presented at the Conference of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics.

Solving a vision problem with language

Since large language models are the most powerful machine-learning models available, the researchers sought to incorporate them into the complex task known as vision-and-language navigation, Pan says.

But such models take text-based inputs and can’t process visual data from a robot’s camera. So, the team needed to find a way to use language instead.

Their technique utilizes a simple captioning model to obtain text descriptions of a robot’s visual observations. These captions are combined with language-based instructions and fed into a large language model, which decides what navigation step the robot should take next.

The large language model outputs a caption of the scene the robot should see after completing that step. This is used to update the trajectory history so the robot can keep track of where it has been.

The model repeats these processes to generate a trajectory that guides the robot to its goal, one step at a time.

To streamline the process, the researchers designed templates so observation information is presented to the model in a standard form — as a series of choices the robot can make based on its surroundings.

For instance, a caption might say “to your 30-degree left is a door with a potted plant beside it, to your back is a small office with a desk and a computer,” etc. The model chooses whether the robot should move toward the door or the office.

“One of the biggest challenges was figuring out how to encode this kind of information into language in a proper way to make the agent understand what the task is and how they should respond,” Pan says.

Advantages of language

When they tested this approach, while it could not outperform vision-based techniques, they found that it offered several advantages.

First, because text requires fewer computational resources to synthesize than complex image data, their method can be used to rapidly generate synthetic training data. In one test, they generated 10,000 synthetic trajectories based on 10 real-world, visual trajectories.

The technique can also bridge the gap that can prevent an agent trained with a simulated environment from performing well in the real world. This gap often occurs because computer-generated images can appear quite different from real-world scenes due to elements like lighting or color. But language that describes a synthetic versus a real image would be much harder to tell apart, Pan says. 

Also, the representations their model uses are easier for a human to understand because they are written in natural language.

“If the agent fails to reach its goal, we can more easily determine where it failed and why it failed. Maybe the history information is not clear enough or the observation ignores some important details,” Pan says.

In addition, their method could be applied more easily to varied tasks and environments because it uses only one type of input. As long as data can be encoded as language, they can use the same model without making any modifications.

But one disadvantage is that their method naturally loses some information that would be captured by vision-based models, such as depth information.

However, the researchers were surprised to see that combining language-based representations with vision-based methods improves an agent’s ability to navigate.

“Maybe this means that language can capture some higher-level information than cannot be captured with pure vision features,” he says.

This is one area the researchers want to continue exploring. They also want to develop a navigation-oriented captioner that could boost the method’s performance. In addition, they want to probe the ability of large language models to exhibit spatial awareness and see how this could aid language-based navigation.

This research is funded, in part, by the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab.

When is Juneteenth? What to know about the holiday commemorating freedom from slavery

With summer comes a slew of holidays and observances, including one central to Black communities across the nation.

This will be the third year that Juneteenth is celebrated widely as a federal holiday, but the holiday itself has been celebrated for more than a century-and-a-half.

Here's everything you need to know about Juneteenth, including when it is and the meaning behind the day.

When is Juneteenth 2024?

The Juneteenth holiday is celebrated this year on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the final end of slavery in the rebelling states just after the end of the Civil War.

While the Emancipation Proclamation freed all African American slaves in the Confederate states in 1863, it was not enforced in areas still under confederate control, according to Britannica . The Civil War ended in April 1865, and on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers delivered the message in Galveston, Texas, that the war was over and the Emancipation Proclamation was now enforceable.

The first celebrations took place the next year in Texas, and eventually spread to other states. Today, celebrations typically include prayer and religious services, speeches, educational events, family gatherings and picnics, and festivals with music, food, and dancing.

Why is Juneteenth a federal holiday?

Though it has long been celebrated in Black communities, Juneteenth became a federal holiday when President Joe Biden signed a bill on June 17, 2021.

The holiday's history gained more attention during the summer of 2020, after the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd.

What's closed on Juneteenth?

Banks, the postal service and the stock market will be closed for Juneteenth.

What's open on Juneteenth?

Most major retailers will likely remain open, like Walmart and Target, as they did in 2023 .

However, Target recognizes Juneteenth as a company holiday. Eligible employees have the option of taking the day off with full pay, or getting paid time and a half for working that day.
