Writing a cover letter is challenging enough, but some employers throw in an extra complication: a request for  salary requirements .

Why do companies ask applicants to name their price before calling them in for a job interview? It’s a way for employers to ensure that they don’t waste time interviewing candidates who whose expectations don't fit with the salary range they have established for the position.

If you’re uncomfortable discussing money, don’t worry. There are ways to include this information in your cover letter without jeopardizing your chances of getting a job.

Here are tips on when and how to include a salary requirement in a cover letter, as well as an example of a cover letter that lists a salary requirement. Also see below for more cover letter samples, and tips for emailing a cover letter and resume to apply for a job.

If a job application does not require you to include salary information (such as your  salary history , a salary requirement, or a salary range), do not do so. If you request too high a salary, the employer may not even look at your application. On the other hand, if you request too low a salary, they may offer you less than you are worth.

However, if the job posting or application states that you must include a salary requirement, be sure to do so—as long as you are not living in a place where employers are prohibited from requesting this information.

It's important to follow directions and provide all the information the employer requests. Otherwise, you risk being tossed out of the application pool.

If the employer is legally permitted to ask and does not give specific instructions on how to include salary requirements, you have a few options to consider.

Include a Salary Range

Job Title: Lower Shore District Administrative Assistant

Reports to: Lower Shore District Superintendent

Locations: Salisbury, MD

Position Objectives:

The District Administrator Assistant will support the District Superintendent and provide administrative oversight and support for district ministry that advances the Peninsula-Delaware Conference’s mission of inspiring and equipping local faith communities to develop disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Key Accountabilities –

Facilitate interpretation of Pen-Del policies and procedures and communicate with pastors and churches so that issues and concerns are addressed immediately and appropriately, and pastors’ and congregations’ appreciation for the connection grows.

Coordination of charge conference schedules and material for the district so that church conferences can occur in an efficient and timely manner.

Perform final review of church conference forms and process compensation forms so that the Pen-Del database and other appropriate files can be accurate and current.

Assist pastors and congregations in completing church and clergy profile information so that the superintendent is equipped to make recommendations and decisions regarding appointment-making.

Disseminate information and respond to questions and concerns on mission-share payments, pension and medical arrearages, statistical reports, church fund balance reports, evaluations, clergy advisories, and church conference.

Coordinate arrangements and prepare material for district meetings, training events, and workshops.

Manage/maintain district budget and credit card records, including processing vouchers, expense reimbursements, and internal transfers.

Prepare and send communications from conference and district through district newsletter and other electronic communications.

Conduct trainings/workshops; including, administrator/secretary workshops and trainings for statistical reports, church conference and Pen-Del database.

Manage the workflow of the change of appointment lifecycle. This includes scheduling take-ins, preparing folders, processing necessary paperwork and updating database.

As Assistant Chief Immigration Judge, the incumbent serves as a principal assistant to the Chief Immigration Judge and/or Regional Deputy Chief Immigration Judges in managing and coordinating Immigration Judge activities throughout the United States and in supervising the administrative operations of the program. As necessary, the incumbent also presides as an Immigration Judge in formal, quasi-judicial hearings, and enters decisions that are final, subject to appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals. Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the Chief Immigration Judge and/or Regional Deputy Chief Immigration Judge in managing and coordinating Immigration Judge activities and in supervising the administrative operations of the program.
  • Assisting in development of policy and procedure for the operations of the program, determining and accounting for resource needs, evaluating and adjusting broad objectives as needed, determining need for and effecting changes in organizational structure and delegation of authority, and establishing effective internal and external communication channels.
  • Participating with the Chief Immigration Judge and/or Regional Deputy Chief Immigration Judge in the formulation of Executive Office for Immigration Review programs and policies.
  • Analyzing programs and projects and prepares reports to the OCIJ leadership, recommending adoption or rejection of policy changes.
  • Providing legal counsel and advice to the OCIJ leadership on matters pertaining to the Immigration and Nationality Act and all other applicable law.

In order to qualify for the Supervisory Immigration Judge (Assistant Chief Immigration Judge) position, applicants must meet all of the following minimum qualifications:

  • Education:  Applicants must possess a LL.B., J.D., or LL.M. degree. (Provide the month and year in which you obtained your degree and the name of the College or University from which it was conferred/awarded.)
  • Licensure:  Applicants must be an active member of the bar, duly licensed and authorized to practice law as an attorney under the laws of any state, territory of the U.S., or the District of Columbia. (Provide the month and year in which you obtained your first license and the State from which it was issued.)
  • Experience:  Applicants must have seven (7) years of post-bar admission experience as a licensed attorney preparing for, participating in, and/or appealing court or administrative agency proceedings at the Federal, State or local level. Qualifying trial experience involves cases in which a complaint was filed with a court or administrative agency, or a charging document (e.g., indictment, notice of violation, or information) was issued by a court, administrative entity, a grand jury, or appropriate military authority. Relevant administrative experience includes cases in which a formal procedure was initiated by a governmental administrative body.

Assistant Director of Graduate Programs

Position Title

Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Graduate Programs works closely with others in the graduate office to support the strategic initiatives of the college and advance graduate programs. This position includes student advising, coordination of programmatic activities, and office support.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Manages the Grad2Grad program by assisting in recruiting for the Grad2Grad program. Interviews and then manages the undergraduate students that are accepted into the program. Coordinates the undergraduate transition to graduate student status.
  • Coordinates Professional Development activities for Master’s level students:
  • Coordinates Graduate level Dean’s Fellows program
  • Organizes and enacts in-person and virtual student orientation each semester
  • Forms cohort study groups for Master’s level programs and organizes networking activities
  • Supports Executive Coaching Series and other events
  • Liaison to CM to ensure availability of appropriate development activities
  • Assist in scheduling and set-up of graduate program events
  • Establish a warm and friendly work environment while providing student support for emergent issues.
  • Supports DCOBT graduate programs for accreditation and reporting purposes.
  • Coordinate Educational Testing Services (ETS) testing for business students; procure tests and assists in administering the online exam; retains and provides results.
  • Assists with graduate scholarship and assistantship applications.
  • Assists in the supervision of Graduate Assistants and Student Workers.
  • Provides back-up support and weekend coverage for the graduate programs as needed.
  • Development of knowledge of program requirements and confirmation of accuracy in college catalog and online. Updates webpages as program requirements change.
  • Assists with marketing and promotion of Graduate Activities.
  • Coordinates with others to improve processes, including admissions and marketing.
  • Other duties as assigned.
