Western NC soon to feature 'Smallest boutique hotel in NC,' Peri Social House

The owners of a new multifaceted business plans to open its doors this summer in Black Mountain.

Once opened, Peri Social House will be part coffee shop, part craft beer shop and part boutique hotel, according to co-owner Kathryn Rudisill. She owns the business with her husband, Trevor Rudisill.

Kathryn Rudisill said the word “peri” means “mountain dweller,” and the business will take inspiration from the word.

“We’re kind of leaning into the mountain boho feel with a traveler’s spin,” Kathryn Rudisill said. “Whether you live here and you’re a permanent mountain dweller or you’re just dwelling for the weekend, we hope it will be a spot for both.”

She and her husband spent a year traveling in 2018, spending five months in Southeast Asia and fell in love with the region. Kathryn Rudisill said even though they were not working at the time, they were always brainstorming business ideas.

“It always kind of came down to some sort of hostel with some sort of community beer shop vibe,” Kathryn Rudisill said. “We feel like it’s something that’s always been in the back of our heads.”

With a capacity to sleep 14 people, the Rudisills are calling Peri Social House “the smallest boutique hotel in North Carolina.”

The Rudisill’s also own Gold River Camp and Cabins, a glamping campground in Marion, where the couple lives with their two children. The campground is an old gem panning operation. Kathryn Rudisill said this venture is what got the couple into the hospitality business.

“We love it,” Kathryn Rudisill said. “We’ve hosted people from Honduras, Ecuador. We just hosted people from New Zealand, but then we also host people from literally 2 miles down the road. It’s really cool to see all walks of life. People are in a good mood when they’re traveling, so generally for the most part you get to be a part of their great experiences. We’ve found a passion for it.”

The building that will host Peri Social House is undergoing major renovations to get ready for a planned summer opening. The Rudisill’s partnered with Atriax Group based in Hickory for the architecture and design portion of the project.

Though the building has been the home of several different ventures in its history, it was most recently the home of the Wild Hare event venue before the Rudisills purchased it in 2022.

Trevor Rudisill said one of the reasons he fell in love with the building is because of its different nooks and crannies.

“We always found the places that we thought were the neatest to hang out was always a place where you would walk around and there’d just been all these neat new things, new places to sit, new places to have a drink or hide away from people,” Trevor Rudisill said. “We did like this place a lot because this seems like everywhere, outside or inside, there’s just a new compartment.”

Once completed, the project will include the coffee and craft beer shops, the boutique hotel, as well as a sunroom and porch for events and a fenced in outdoor space. A semi-permanent food truck is also a possibility, according to the owners. A small gift shop that will focus on local vendors will also be in the building.

Kathryn Rudisill said she wants Peri Social House to be a place that helps instill the sense of community she already sees in Black Mountain.

“One of the things that we bring into Black Mountain is even more collaboration with other business,” Kathryn Rudisill said. “I know people are really good about doing it and I see it more and more as we’re getting more integrated into the community, but this is going to be a fun spot where we have opportunities like local craft beers on tap.”

She said it is important for her to create a space that visitors and locals alike can come to “relax and rejuvenate” while also creating a family-friendly environment.

“We’re really looking forward to bringing a space that families can connect without having to stress at the same time,” Kathryn Rudisill said. “It goes back to that whole post-COVID thing of people finally getting back out and I think people are more eager than ever now to meet up and to go out and do different things. We just want to be a space that makes it easy on them.”  

Peri Social House is located at 406 W. State St. and is scheduled to open this summer.

Sunday Ice Cream is one of my top dessert places in Convoy!! Their asian-inspired ice cream flavors are delicious and top-tier. What I recommend: - My favorite flavor is the matcha. Matcha is intense and just like the matcha you get in Japan. No grassy flavor in sight. - The split scoop ($6.50): good sized portion compared to the single scoop for a dollar extra. You also get to try 2 flavors. - You can add condensed milk or sprinkles to your liking, I love a good condensed milk drizzle. Will be back again! I would choose this ice cream store over Wanderlust Creamery. Great service too.

Got the brown sugar oolong and black sesame. Brown sugar oolong was slightly sweet and had an after taste of oolong. Makes me want to find a roasted oolong soft serve. The black sesame reminded me of the bi-rite creamery's black sesame in sf, very yummy Also tried a bit of the matcha ice cream and it's STRONG. Workers were all super sweet and allowed us to try samples. It can get really loud and busy in here and you'd be lucky if you're able to snag a seat.

This place looks like a is key hole in the wall but it's the a new and very popular ice cream shop! The line goes out the door at night. I thought it was cute and busy. The employees were very polite and patient with me trying samples. Even tho they had a long line they never rushed me . The flavors are interesting and unique! I tried the oolong brown sugar , taro ube, and black sesame. And then ended up matcha, the matcha is very strong almost bitter. I can tell the quality is very good, i can't wait to come back to try a few more flavors. I'm happy they give you a free little bite of sugar cone. You're also able to add condensed milk or rainbow sprinkles for toppings for free.

I LOVE this place and will be coming back! They have unique flavors (boricha-barley, matcha, black sesame, red bean, and plenty more). They let you sample & they have the most delicious waffle cones! Service is phenomenal, the employee was really nice. There are several seats inside. There is limited parking but worth going around a couple times to find parking for this ice cream! I had the boricha and match & highly recommend both!

My group arrived closed to closing time but they still accommodated us. Sunday Ice Cream had a lot of Asian flavors and they also let me sample them. It's a small little shop with a few tables inside and a couple of seats outside. I ordered a waffle cup with two full scoops of strawberry and injeolmi (roasted soybean). I also tried the Vietnamese coffee (which was pretty strong in terms of coffee flavor), banana milk (tastes like the Korean drink), and black sesame. It was a tasty treat and I'll probably revisit to try the other flavors.

This is the best ice cream I've found in San Diego in a loooong time. I got half strawberry milk/half banana milk, then condensed milk and sprinkles on top. It was delicious. I usually never finish my ice cream but now i can't wait to try the other flavors! Crisp and refreshing

This place super cute and you get 10% off when you dine at friend's house. I was told that they serve really big scoops and offer a variety of flavors and wasn't disappointed. I tried all of the flavors but my favorites were banana milk, melona, and coffee. I liked the different flavor options but was a bit confused because the textures of each flavor were all so different. I'm not sure if this was on purpose or not but just be prepared to have a range of creamy to icy/dry textured ice cream depending on when you go. I went on a Sunday around dinner time and the line was out the door. I do like the fast and friendly service. I got to try each flavor and didn't feel in a rush to pick anything right away. I would go back to try something else when new flavors roll out.

What verdict will voters render after jury finds Trump guilty in hush money case?

The sometimes-breathless gavel-to-gavel coverage of former President Trump’s trial was no surprise, as a singularly divisive figure sat for more than a month at the defense table, the first president to face criminal charges and the possibility of a trip to jail.

But for all the trial’s spectacle, many political observers predict that the impact of Thursday’s 34 guilty verdicts will be muted and unlikely to change the dynamic in a presidential race that appears extremely close, just over five months before the last day of voting.

The New York jury’s verdict puts Trump in an unprecedented position: trying to win the White House as a felon, guilty of falsifying business records to bury the details of his extramarital one-night stand with a porn star.

While a Trump appeal could still remove the threat of probation or jail, he still will have to explain to voters why a man convicted of a political cover-up should be entrusted with the most powerful office in the world.

Jurors deliberated for 9½ hours over two days before convicting former President Trump of all 34 counts he faced in a hush-money scheme surrounding the 2016 election.

Trump has provoked both admiration and despair — depending on the audience’s political leanings — with his ability to survive what some judged to be fatal missteps.

“I already gave up my membership in the He-Certainly-Can’t-Survive-This Club,” David Axelrod, the top strategist in Barack Obama’s two successful presidential campaigns, said in an interview. “Look at how many other times he has gotten away with things. He is an extraordinary escape artist.” (Axelrod and other experts spoke before the verdict.)

In 2016, candidate Trump famously told a campaign crowd that he could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue in New York and shoot someone without losing his core supporters. Though the charges in the hush money case fell short of assault with a deadly weapon, they stand as a real-world test of Trump’s seeming invulnerability from political norms.

With about a month to go in the 2016 race, a previously secret video showed Trump boasting about his ability to sexually prey on women because of his fame. Many observers believed the “Access Hollywood” recording effectively killed his chances of winning the presidency. But Trump overtook front-runner Hillary Clinton in the final weeks of the race and won the presidency.

When Trump was thrown out by voters in 2020 in favor of Joe Biden, some pundits again predicted Trump’s days were numbered. But he pushed aside all his Republican primary challengers this year, despite a pair of legal setbacks: a jury verdict that found him liable for sexually abusing advice columnist E. Jean Carroll in 1996 and a judge’s order to pay a $454-million penalty for falsely inflating the value of his real estate empire.

Trump’s conviction plays out at a time when Americans are deeply divided, a fracture exacerbated by a sharply fragmented information ecosystem. Mainstream outlets parsed the detailed evidence presented by prosecutors in the trial, while right-leaning outlets bolstered Trump’s claims that the charges amounted to a political hit job by Democratic prosecutors.

After closing arguments Tuesday, one Newsmax cable television commentator suggested that the evidence in the case pointed to crimes — not by Trump but by Stormy Daniels, who testified she had sex with Trump in 2006, and by prosecution witness Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer, who testified he helped facilitate the payments to keep Daniels quiet about the one-night stand.

A Marquette Law School Poll completed in mid-May suggested the verdict might have some effect on the presidential race.

When a national sample of voters was presented with the possibility that Trump would be found guilty in the New York case, 43% said they would vote for Biden, 38% would vote for Trump and 18% said they would vote for someone else or remained undecided.

Presented with the opposite outcome, Trump being acquitted, the survey tipped in his favor, with voters preferring him by 44% to 38% over Biden. Again, 18% favored another candidate or were undecided.

But both those results fall within the margin of error of more than 6%, said Charles Franklin, director of the Wisconsin-based poll. And previous experience suggests that public opinion about the hush money case might have been well settled for many voters long before the verdict, because the facts had been aired for many months, Franklin said.

Column: Trump is officially a convicted felon, but that may not stand in his way

Trump guilty: Despite the former president’s felony conviction in his hush money trial, many voters will react to the jury decision with a shrug.

Franklin compared the long run-up to the verdict with the prolonged public debate that occurred during Trump’s first impeachment, when the onetime reality TV host was accused of soliciting foreign interference in a bid to help win the 2020 election.

“As the House considered the impeachment, then voted to impeach him and then the Senate voted to acquit him, the public’s views [of Trump] and of the impeachment and then of the conviction didn’t change,” Franklin said.

He predicted that future surveys about this week’s trial verdict were likely to show only a modest shift in voter sentiments.

Charles Cook, a nonpartisan political analyst based in Washington, agreed that it was hard to imagine the verdict swaying many voters.

“Swing voters, particularly the ‘pure independents’ who don’t lean to either party, tend to be driven by other issues and have other priorities in mind when making their decisions to vote,” Cook said via email. He said that the small group of voters who do not have hardened views on the 2024 race “don’t follow current events that much, believe all politicians and political parties are corrupt and are not particularly moved by this.”

The thought that Trump might entirely escape the wrath of voters seemed unfathomable to some.

“At some point, there is going to have to be a discussion of whether we want a liar and a convict in the Oval Office,” said Ben Austin, a Los Angeles Democrat who worked in President Clinton’s White House. “I mean, what kind of country are we?”

Reed Galen, a lifelong Republican who left the party and co-founded the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, wondered if GOP voters who once favored former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley might be put off by the revelations from the hush money case.

“Some of them were already highly skeptical of Trump, and this might take them off Trump Island, hopefully once and for all,” Galen said.

Q&A: Yes, Trump could be elected president as a convicted felon

Donald Trump faces multiple criminal charges, but a conviction would not legally prevent him from serving as president — in theory, even from jail.

But Trump stalwarts say his detractors should have long ago recognized that he is impervious to critiques by mainstream media outlets and old-guard Republicans. Even those who have accepted that Trump is a flawed candidate said they find him preferable in a country they are convinced is going the wrong way under President Biden.

“By now, a lot of Arizonans are just numb to the trial and all of this,” said Stan Barnes, a Republican who runs a public affairs and lobbying firm in the battleground state. “They’re a lot more focused on what kind of policies they want from the president. When Trump was in the White House, mortgage rates were [as low as] 2½%, unemployment was [low]. And the southern border felt secure.”

Barnes said nothing that happened in the Manhattan courtroom would change those views, predicting that many Americans will be ready to vote again to promote Trump and his “America first” agenda.

The Liberal Democrats will pledge free personal care to "all those who need it" as they make their social care offering on the campaign trail.

Making the announcement on Tuesday, the party will say it would help "end the hospital crisis" by enabling thousands of people ready to be discharged but stuck in hospital beds to get care, as well as help the elderly to "stay in their own homes longer".

The Lib Dems pointed to a report by Age UK that found an estimated 1.6 million people aged 65 and over had unmet care needs, and in April alone, an average of 12,772 hospital beds were being used by people who were ready to be discharged.

Leader Sir Ed Davey said: "As a carer for my disabled son, and after caring for my ill mother when I was young, care is deeply personal for me. That is why I am putting fixing the care crisis at the heart of the Liberal Democrat offer to the country at this election.

"Far too often, family carers are being left to pick up the pieces because the care system simply isn't there for them. Millions of people are going without the care they need, while thousands are stuck in hospital beds instead of being cared for in their own home or a care home.

"We cannot fix the crisis facing the NHS without fixing the crisis facing social care. The Liberal Democrats would bring in free personal care to help people live independently and with dignity, in their own homes wherever possible."

 The front pages for tomorrow unsurprisingly focus on two things: The return of Nigel Farage as a Westminster candidate, and the polling which suggests a record defeat for the Tories.

Neither of these stories will be welcomed among Rishi Sunak's team.

Sir Keir Starmer could be heading to Downing Street with a majority of 194 seats, bigger than what Tony Blair achieved in 1997, according to the first polling projection by YouGov of the campaign.

The projection shows a historic Labour landslide, with the party getting the highest number of seats of any party at an election in history.

At the same time, the Tories are trying to boost ratings by talking about culture wars while Labour is talking about real wars in terms of what they would do for defence. And Nigel Farage has announced he's standing for Reform UK.

On the Sky News Daily, Niall Patterson talks to Sky's chief political correspondent Jon Craig about the poll and today's developments, and to Scarlett Maguire, director of the polling organisation JL Partners.

Today felt like a day that could be an inflection point in the election for a number of reasons.

We had big announcements from numerous parties, and a megapoll predicting a historic result.

  • A YouGov poll predicted Labour will win a supermajority of 194 seats - with the Conservatives routed to just 140 MPs;
  • Tory ministers are among those who could lose their seat - including the defence secretary, Grant Shapps, who hung up on our deputy political editor Sam Coates when he was told live on air ;
  • As chief political correspondent Jon Craig writes, panic will be spread through Tory ranks ;
  • Meanwhile, Sky election analyst Professor Michael Thrasher said Rishi Sunak has 31 days to save the Conservative Party ;
  • Twelve big Conservative beasts face losing their seats - and  political correspondent  Tamara Cohen  has a despatch from one such constituency .
  • Just before this poll was published, Nigel Farage announced he was standing to be an MP for Reform UK - U-turning on his previous stance of not contesting;
  • As political correspondent Rob Powell says, Mr Farage doesn't just have his eye on this election but the years ahead ;

  • Equalities minister Kemi Badenoch also said trans athletes may have to compete with their biological sex ;
  • In slightly lighter news, the prime minister revealed his preferred Nando's order - with a surprise inclusion in the sides .
  • Elsewhere, the SNP said there was no need for the UK to have a nuclear deterrent , in response to the Labour announcement;
  • The Liberal Democrats sabotaged Rishi Sunak as he held a campaign event;
  • Meanwhile, political correspondent Serena Barker-Singh outlined the difficulties facing Sir Keir Starmer over Jeremy Corbyn.

Today's poll suggests that in the Conservative heartlands, voters are about to turn on the governing party like never before, Tarama Cohen writes from Godalming, Surrey .

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is running in Godalming and Ash, one of the country's most affluent areas.

Conservative since its creation, Mr Hunt's majority - on different boundaries - was down to 8,817 at tzhe 2019 election, ahead of the Liberal Democrats. YouGov's seat by seat poll predicts it could be overturned altogether. 

It could be a significant moment of election night - compared with cabinet minister Michael Portillo losing his seat in 1997.

Mortgage rates are a key issue for many voters in this commuter town, and switchers were not hard to find. 

Sam and Fi Hayward, who have three children under five, previously voted Conservative but will now back the Lib Dems.

Finance worker Sam - who's natural home is with Conservatives - will be changing who he backs, saying "different issues on our radar now we have a young family".

He is also unimpressed with the government's performance, putting it down to "general incompetence, Brexit hasn't gone their way, COVID hasn't helped". 

Fi is also switching, saying "I think it would be better for our family".

At the Godalming Delights sweet shop, new mum Felicity is also switching away from the Tories. 

"We're living on savings to pay a massive mortgage", she said, and they've taken their older child out of nursery due to the costs.

Retired teacher Jean said the impact of COVID is still on her mind - including a friend who died "while [politicians] were partying".

She's also concerned about children's mental health, a subject the Lib Dems are campaigning on.

But there was still support for the Conservatives here - and lack of enthusiasm for the alternative. 

Retired railway worker Robert Jones said: "I like Jeremy Hunt and Rishi Sunak. I like his apprenticeship scheme, my children's children need a job and all our heavy industries are going."

He was not impressed with the National Service idea - and does worry about Labour.

"Diane Abbott was in, and now she's out. The left always worry me, and the unions - although I was a union man for years - having their sway," he says.

Some voters felt Mr Hunt personally had worked hard as an MP. "He's moderate, and I'm a moderate", said Tory party member David Cooper.

But he was worried about a severe defeat. 

This corner of southwest Surrey, a constituency held by former cabinet minister Virginia Bottomley and now the chancellor, has never deserted the Tories, even at the height of New Labour. 

If the tide turns here on election night, it will be a sign the once unshakeable Blue Wall is really tumbling down.

The candidates for Godalming and Ash are:

  • Graham Drage, Reform UK;
  • Paul Follows, Liberal Democrats;
  • Jeremy Hunt, Conservatives;
  • James Walsh, Labour;
  • Steve Williams, Greens.

The findings of the SkyNews/YouGov MRP poll are a disaster for the Conservatives, a worry for Labour and good news for the Lib Dems and Reform UK.

The forecast of a Tory near wipeout  will spread panic among Conservative candidates and potentially spark a fresh bout of mutiny against Rishi Sunak from the right of his party.

For Labour, the suggestion that Sir Keir Starmer is heading for a landslide even bigger than Tony Blair won in 1997 will alarm those in the party already fearing complacency.

But for the Lib Dems, the projection that Sir Ed Davey's party is heading for a result to match the heady days of Paddy Ashdown and Charles Kennedy will be a massive confidence boost.

However, the party that will be really delighted is Reform UK - already newly energised with  Nigel Farage replacing Richard Tice as leader  - who will claim that with Labour on course to win, Tory supporters can vote for them.

There will also be consternation in the Tory high command at the forecast that so many of the party's big beasts - led by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt - are at risk of losing their seat.

Mr Hunt is fighting the new constituency of Godalming and Ash - in his favour it's in a part of the affluent Surrey stockbroker belt represented by Conservative MPs since 1910.

But the cabinet minsters who are vulnerable are in seats held by Labour in the Blair and Brown years or the Liberal Democrats in the Ashdown, Kennedy or Nick Clegg years.

We've just witnessed what is probably the most dramatic moment of the general election campaign so far - Nigel Farage, a figure of fear for the Tories, is entering the fray ( read more here ).

All eyes will now turn to the polls, where Reform UK is performing at around 12%.

It hasn't made any major breakthroughs so far - and this vote share will not translate into a seat.

However, speaking to Sky News after the announcement, Mr Farage was adamant the party would now ascend and win more than the 3.9 million votes UKIP took in 2015.

It was at that election that Douglas Carswell - after defecting from the Tories - won a seat for UKIP. It is in this seat that Farage is now bidding to be an MP after seven failed attempts to enter the Commons.

Clacton will be viewed as a soft target for Reform. This was a strong Leave voting area and the Conservative candidate, Giles Watling, is a Remainer.

Reform UK is polling above the national average in this seaside town - YouGov and Sky News' MRP poll puts its share here at 19.5%. But the "Farage factor" cannot be underestimated. He could really win here.

All of this will send shivers down the spines of those in Tory HQ, but Sir Keir Starmer may be rubbing his hands with glee.

Polling already suggests that Reform could cost the Tories 100 seats by splitting the right wing vote across the Red Wall and Essex. It explains why the Tories were pushing the message hard that "a vote for Reform is a vote for Labour".

Farage has turned that on its head. The election is a foregone conclusion and the Tories are too divided to be serious in opposition, he says.

Instead, given the Tories have already lost, Farage argues that a vote for the Tories is the real wasted vote.

That's his pitch to voters who he is now inviting to join his "political takeover".

It was a week ago that the government was announcing its plans to reintroduce national service - after a fashion - if they won the election.

The idea is for all 18-year-olds to volunteer at least once a month, and some to join the military for the year.

Since then, pollsters at JL Partners have asked the country for their opinions on the policy.

As part of its survey, it asked 2,013 people to check boxes against answers for which statements they agreed with.

People could tick as many boxes as they want.

Some 32% of people - a total of 651 of the 2,013 - ticked the box saying it made them feel more negative about the Tories.

Meanwhile, 23% - 467 people of the 2,013 - said it made them feel better about the Conservatives.

To break that down, that's 184 more responses that thought badly of the Conservatives after the national service announcement than thought better of it - a nine point gap.

And then 24% of people - 479 - ticked the box saying it made no difference to their views.

Some 12% - 236 - said it made them feel better about Labour, while 3% - 51 - said it made them feel worse about Sir Keir Starmer's party.

And 12% - 243 - said they did not know.
