Explore scholarship opportunities to help fund your studies, welcome to the department of philosophy at boston college.

Boston College’s graduate philosophy programs attract talented students from around the world. We offer master’s and doctoral degrees, covering all periods in the history of philosophy and with a diversity of philosophical approaches.

The Department of Philosophy is noted for its strength in the history of philosophy, contemporary continental philosophy, and practical philosophy, including ethics and social-political philosophy. In addition, the department offers two interdisciplinary programs: philosophy and law, and philosophy and theology. The program also includes Asian philosophy and diaspora studies.

Each September our doctoral program admits a small group of new students, who are immediately welcomed as research assistants. The experience of working with an established scholar is designed to help the student learn some of the basic skills of philosophical research and establish a mentoring relationship with one or more faculty. The program’s flexibility ensures individualized attention in designing a plan of welcome to the department of philosophy at Boston College study. All Ph.D. students have funding through their fifth year in the program (fourth year if they enter with an M.A.) assuming successful completion of requirements. Doctoral students gain experience teaching in the University’s two-semester Philosophy of the Person core course. There is a teaching seminar in the first two years of the program to help prepare the doctoral students to design their own syllabi and to provide feedback on teaching; ongoing class visitations take place thereafter.

The M.A. program admits an additional group of students, who share the same faculty, courses, and other resources for the study of philosophy, including language preparation.

Philosophy at Boston College benefits from our location in the Boston area, a rich center of academic life, including universities, libraries, and cultural institutions that aid all aspects of our research and scholarly interchange. There are opportunities for studies abroad at selected universities.

We invite you to consider joining our thriving intellectual community as we continue to investigate philosophy’s perennial issues.

The philosophy department offers an M.A. program, a Ph.D. program, and two interdisciplinary programs: a joint M.A. in philosophy and theology, and dual degrees in philosophy and law (M.A./J.D. and Ph.D./J.D.).

A significant feature of these programs is the extensive and diverse range of courses available to graduate students every semester. They cover the history and problems of philosophy, allowing for concentration in the following areas: Ancient Philosophy, Medieval Philosophy, Modern Philosophy, Phenomenology and Contemporary Continental Philosophy, Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Law, Philosophy of Religion, Epistemology, and Philosophy of Science. The department is linked to research centers such as the Lonergan Institute and is home to several scholarly journals. Members of the department are nationally and internationally known and are involved in cutting-edge research.

Furthermore, each year the department hosts many speakers from the US and abroad (through its own lecture series, or consortiums such as the Boston Area Colloquium in Ancient Philosophy), and invites a prominent scholar to be the Gadamer Visiting Professor and teach for four to six weeks.

In addition, students may take appropriate graduate-level courses in other departments of Boston College (e.g., Political Science, Theology), and may avail themselves of Boston’s wider intellectual offerings thanks to Boston College’s participation in the Boston Area Consortium, which allows them to cross-register for one course per semester at Boston University, Tufts University or Brandeis University. By application, they also can participate in The Graduate Consortium in Women's Studies and the Boston Theological Institute.

Boston College is a suburban campus located on the western edge of the city of Boston. Several colleges and universities, including Boston University, MIT, and Harvard University, are easily within reach by public transportation. The exchange of ideas between faculty and students of Boston area colleges and universities is rich and diverse.

The doctoral program has long been committed to the study of the history of philosophy with particular attention to developments in contemporary European thought. It is nevertheless committed to pluralism, diversity, and inclusion, with a range of courses in Anglo-American philosophy, and a number of scholars working closely in contemporary ethics, social and political philosophy, critical philosophy of race, epistemology, philosophy of science, and philosophy of religion. We are convinced of the importance of interdisciplinary work, with active, formal programs in philosophy and law, psychoanalytic studies, Lonergan studies, Medieval thought, and philosophy and theology. We cultivate a strong sense of both the American and international contexts for our work, with a number of faculty members connected to Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia.

Student Life in the Department

At any given time, there are approximately forty students actively at work in various stages of the program, over half of which are present on campus. Many of our students come from other countries, including Chile, China, Colombia, Congo, India, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam. Those who are from the United States come from a wide range of liberal arts colleges and universities coast to coast. A number spend part of their time in the program conducting research abroad (e.g., in recent years, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the United Kingdom). Students maintain several lively study groups each year and organize at least one major conference each semester (e.g., a Workshop on Contemporary Philosophy in the fall and a Graduate Student Conference in the spring; see Graduate Activities). There is also a bi-annual off-campus community day, at which faculty and doctoral students undertake an extended discussion of professional and social concerns chosen by the students. Some funds are available to assist graduate students who are delivering papers at scholarly conferences. See also the section “Resources” in the Graduate Studies Handbook.

Additional Information

Course Work

The total course work required for the Ph.D. is 16 courses (48 credits). Students entering the program with an M.A. in philosophy may be given credit for up to six courses (18 credits) toward this requirement, but must take a minimum of ten courses (30 credits) in the program. Students entering the program without an M.A. earn an M.A. on their way to the Ph.D.

Research Assistantship

Doctoral students funded by BC are Research Assistants in their first year and are responsible for a total of up to 20 hours per week of service to faculty members of the department of philosophy.

Teaching Fellowship

Doctoral students funded by BC serve as Teaching Fellows from their second to their fourth year (third year for the students who already had a master’s degree when they entered the program). Teaching Fellows are responsible for teaching one unit of Philosophy of the Person I in the Fall semester and Philosophy of the Person II in the Spring semester. The course description is currently as follows:

This course introduces students to philosophical reflection and its history through the presentation and discussion of the writings of major thinkers from ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary periods. The course is designed to show how fundamental and enduring questions about the universe and human beings recur in different historical contexts and from a range of approaches and methods. Emphasis is given to ethical themes, such as the nature of the human person, the foundation of human rights and corresponding responsibilities, and problems of social justice.

Seminar in Teaching

To provide Ph.D. students with the requisite pedagogical instruction and supervision, the department requires first-year and second-year Ph.D. students who are or will become teaching fellows to participate for four semesters in a series of training seminars. This course should be taken during the academic year before the first year of teaching and the first year of teaching (i.e., generally the first two years of the program). These seminars deal with such issues as preparation of syllabi and exam schedules, fundamentals of the art of teaching, grading, and advising. Each student presents a sample syllabus which is then discussed by the group. The Seminar in Teaching meets six times a semester, generally on Monday afternoons. The Seminar does not count toward the doctoral requirement of 16 courses (48 credits).

Logic Proficiency

The Ph.D. student must demonstrate proficiency in logic by taking PHIL5577 Introduction to Symbolic Logic with a grade of “B” or better, or by attaining a score of 80% or better on the Logic Proficiency Examination, or by showing evidence of comparable prior course work.

Language Proficiency

Ph.D. students must demonstrate proficiency in two of the following foreign languages: Latin, Greek, French, or German, by having obtained a grade of “B” or better in a language course (two semesters at the elementary college level or one semester at the intermediate college level, or in the 12-week summer language class for graduate students at Boston College), or by passing the department’s own language examination. They may take language courses at Boston College at a reduced rate of tuition, either during the academic year or during summers.

Preliminary Comprehensive Exam

Ph.D. students are expected to pass this examination at the end of their first year in the program to be authorized to teach the following year.

Doctoral Comprehensive Examination

This exam, to be taken in the fourth year (third year for the students who already had a master’s degree when they entered the program), comprises two parts: 1. A qualifying paper, 2. A dissertation proposal.

Dissertation

A Ph.D. student is expected to complete a dissertation that embodies original and independent research and which demonstrates advanced scholarly achievement. The research must be carried out and the dissertation written under the direction of a tenure track faculty from the Philosophy Department. After validation by the supervisor and the second reader, the dissertation is defended in a public oral examination.

All requirements for the doctorate must be completed within eight consecutive years from the beginning of doctoral studies. Extensions beyond this limit may be made only with the departmental recommendation and the approval of the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Learning Outcomes

Graduate Programs

Students in the course of the M.A. and Ph.D. programs in philosophy will:

  • demonstrate a wide-ranging and sophisticated grasp of the history of Western philosophy (ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary), i.e., be able to convey information about individual authors and texts, to state connections between the principal authors and texts, but also to explain how individual texts and authors fit into the overall movement of Western philosophy; ability to articulate a narrative of that tradition; in the case of M.A. students and of Ph.D. students completing their first year in the program, ability to converse knowledgeably about the history of Western philosophy as well as about two of the major systematic areas in philosophy (metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, natural theology/philosophy of religion, social/political philosophy).
  • demonstrate a sophisticated reading and interpretation of philosophical texts, i.e., to identify the main thesis of a text, to explain the thesis, to outline in detail the principal arguments in support of the thesis, and to identify the main presuppositions underlying the text; to contextualize philosophical texts and issues in a fairly sophisticated way, i.e., to locate them in their appropriate historical contexts, to show awareness of the historical background of philosophical issues, and to show alertness to the differences between philosophical genres.
  • demonstrate a sophisticated understanding and evaluation of philosophical arguments, i.e., to distinguish premises and conclusions, to distinguish issues of logical validity from issues concerning the truth or falsity of premises, to pick out and explain ambiguous terms, to identify presuppositions, and to highlight the most salient strengths or weaknesses of an argument.
  • demonstrate a sophisticated ability to write about philosophical texts and issues, i.e., to state a philosophical thesis, to explain the thesis, to construct an argument or arguments in support of the thesis, to respond to possible misunderstandings of or objections to the thesis as well as to alternative interpretations of the texts and alternative positions on the issues.
  • demonstrate the ability to survey and to select secondary literature that is appropriate to their work, and to make fair and effective use of this secondary literature.
  • demonstrate a sophisticated ability to distinguish philosophical claims from other types of claims, i.e., to recognize and articulate the differences between philosophical claims and, for example, historical and natural-scientific claims when presented with these different types of claims; to be able to explain texts in which claims of different sorts are not only found side by side but are even confused.
  • demonstrate a fairly sophisticated understanding of such philosophical issues as the nature and scope of human knowledge, the meaning of human personhood, the good life and moral obligation, the social and political dimensions of human existence, the relationship of faith and reason, and the existence and nature of God. This fairly sophisticated understanding would involve being able to state what the main questions are in most if not all of these areas, what the main answers to these questions are, what the principal sources of evidence are to which those answers appeal; to stake out a reasoned position on at least some of these questions, and to show an appreciation of what they do and do not know about these various issues.
  • in the case of Ph.D. students, demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and effectively about the philosophical texts and issues mentioned above.

Joint M.A. in Philosophy & Theology

  • Demonstrate a working understanding of the fundamental texts, voices, conversations, and debates that have shaped the history of philosophy and theology in the Western tradition (ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary);
  • Appreciate and systematically engage the historical and ongoing interaction between philosophy and theology in the Western tradition, particularly as it concerns questions of God, reason, revelation, faith, language, doctrine, culture, and human experience;
  • Appreciate and constructively engage the various genres, methods, styles, aims, and historical contexts of philosophical and theological inquiry;
  • Develop a program of study in consultation with an advisor that includes a concentration in one of the following areas: Faith, Science, and Philosophy; Foundations in Philosophy and Theology; Medieval Philosophy and Theology; and Philosophy and Religions.
  • Demonstrate a sophisticated ability to write and speak about philosophical and theological texts and issues through graduate seminars, language study, a comprehensive exam, and an optional thesis.

Boston College Admissions

Gasson Hall is featured at Boston College in the fall.

Boston College was once described by  The New York Times  as a university on a mission to become “ the nation’s Catholic intellectual powerhouse ,” and “the center for the study of Roman Catholic theology in the United States.” With its $3.3 billion dollar endowment and its status as a leading Jesuit institution of higher learning, BC has arguably attained this lofty mission. Not only has the private research university drawn the likes of former Secretary of the Treasury Alicia Munnell and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate John Hume as faculty, but former Secretary of State John Kerry, CEO of CVS Health Karen Lynch, and actress and comedian Amy Poehler are all alumni. Depending on who you ask, such alumni are called either “Eagles” (in reference to the prestigious Division I athletics program’s mascot) or “Heightsmen and Heightswomen” (which stems from campus’ nickname, The Heights).

Most undergraduates enroll in the Robert J. Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences, which is the oldest of BC’s schools and programs. Other programs accepting undergraduates include The James A. Woods, S.J. College of Advancing Studies for students following nontraditional academic paths, and the Carroll School of Management, one of the most rigorous and highly-ranked undergraduate business programs in the country. The William F. Connell School of Nursing and the Carolyn A. and Peter S. Lynch School of Education and Human Development also run undergraduate programs. Associate degrees will soon be offered by the newly-minted Messina College, a two-year residential program, beginning in the 2024-25 academic year. And don’t let the “College” moniker fool you, Boston College also operates graduate schools for law, theology & ministry, and social work.

For Boston College’s Class of 2027, 36,525 students applied, but only 15% were admitted, the lowest acceptance rate in the school’s history .

The Boston College Core Curriculum  is shared among all undergraduates to “acquire a common intellectual foundation” across the student body. Coursework is required in the following disciplines: “Arts,” “Cultural Diversity,” “History,” “Literature,” “Mathematics,” “Natural Science,” “Philosophy,” “Social Sciences,” “Theology,” and “Writing.” By taking a “Complex Problems and Enduring Questions” course, taught by two faculty from different departments to encourage an interdisciplinary exploration of the subject material, students can satisfy two core requirements at once.

In 1863, Boston College’s charter was formally approved by the state of Massachusetts after decades of opposition from Boston’s Protestant establishment. The school initially served the city’s growing Irish immigrant population, and the first curriculum was strictly Jesuit, with required coursework in the Classics, philosophy, and Christian theology. In the 20th century, BC moved to its current location in gorgeous Chestnut Hill. A registered historic district, the main campus has buildings in the Gothic Revival style and houses a two million volume library system with some of the largest collections of Jesuit historical manuscripts in the United States.

If one were to arrive on campus today, one would find a spirited student body composed of an elite cache of learners who bring their talents to  The Heights , the student-run newspaper,  The Stylus , the undergraduate literary magazine, and the Cross and Crown Honor Society, for seniors who have distinguished themselves with academic prowess and leadership. If one attended a highly-anticipated game of the men’s hockey or women’s lacrosse teams, both of which have brought home national championships, one might hear everyone sing along to “For Boston,” the university’s fight song (and the first college fight song in U.S. history!).

Boston College has been no exception to the recent decline in acceptance rates for elite institutions in the United States. 5,511 applicants were accepted to the Class of 2027 from a pool of 36,525. This 15% acceptance rate was the lowest in the school’s history and is over twice as low as the Class of 2021 acceptance rate, which stood at 32%. According to  Boston College Admissions , the BC experience is composed of a blend of “liberal arts,” “Jesuit, Catholic tradition,” and a “formative education” that cultivates holistic personal growth. Prospective applicants should consider that demonstrating an investment in Jesuit values, regardless of one’s own faith, is integral to crafting a competitive application. If you’re wondering how to best go about conveying your spiritual character, consulting with Ivy Coach will answer all of your questions and take you one step closer to sporting the school’s signature maroon and gold!

Freshman: Tufts is an excellent school with lots of freedom to explore your passions. The professors are excellent and care about each student individually. There are lots of clubs to choose from and people are always welcoming. The campus vibe is very nice and laid back generally. Everyone is very passionate about some subject which is inspiring to be around. The dining halls are not amazing but Kindelvan and the other cafes are very convenient. Some of the activities can be hard to join as freshmen because it can be competitive but gets easier to get involved in later years. The dorms are not fancy but they certainly aren’t bad in general. People are quirky and a little nerdy but it keeps it interesting. In my experience, financial aid is also one of the best available. Overall I highly recommend going to Tufts! ... Read 1,075 reviews

Sophomore: I really love it here and am glad that I decided on Wellesley! I'm class of 2026, so I've been on campus for about two years now and each year, I've been able to meet some of the best professors and even better people. Conversations with peers are just as nuanced as the people and although the campus could still do with some diversity, I think we're definitely on the better end (I say this as a half Black and half-Asian student from a very predominantly white town). I've found that it's really easy to make friends because the campus and class sizes are so small (that being said, I'm also more extroverted). However, even my more introverted friends have said that they were eventually able to find close friends as their first or second year progressed -- the key is to be involved in campus or go to events and intentionally talk to people and reach out. ... Alum: Northeastern's co-op program was a launchpad for my career. I didn't just graduate with a degree - I gained invaluable real-world experience and a built-in network through my co-op placements. As a health science student, the location couldn't have been better. Imagine being surrounded by top research hospitals like MGH, BWH, Beth Israel, and Boston Children's! Finding mentors and internships was a breeze and I had a plethora of opportunities to choose from. The heart of Boston became my campus too. With museums, a vast array of restaurants and bars, and endless activities on my doorstep, weekends were anything but dull. Whether exploring on campus or venturing into the city, there was always something new to discover. ... Read 3,754 reviews

Sophomore: I haven't been with Wheaton for very long but it's been my best academic experience so far! The school is perfect if you're someone who is looking for that classic college environment but on a much smaller scale. The campus is beautiful, clean, and well kept. There are plenty of places to go to enjoy the outdoors and many of the vintage buildings are great places to explore. Student culture is diverse, active, and playful, everyone here is always looking for more people to join their various clubs. Classes are just as diverse, there is something for everyone here academically. All academic buildings are littered with everything you need to succeed in whatever you pursue. As a Visual Arts Major there are so many tools for me to play with, it's very exciting. The neighboring woods is a great place to explore and experience a good amount of nature, fairly safe and fun to find all the student landmarks. Housing and dorms are a hassle, most buildings are definitely NOT made the same. ... Read 689 reviews

Freshman: As a first-year, Student- Athlete at Suffolk University, my experience of college has had its ups and downs. I moved from Michigan to Boston for the city life, great educational opportunity, and for the commitment to play volleyball. While transitioning into college, I found studying more demanding and class work more rigors. At first it was a challenge and an intimidation. Finding a balance between athletics, class-work and my social life was overwhelming. However, the community of Suffolk offered many resolutions and opportunities for help. The ability to have access to Tutoring was a great advantage in my eyes and thoroughly helped me excel academically. Suffolk's ability to be inclusive and resourceful shined bright this year. I also enjoyed being a part of the Honors Program. The program held multiple events that brought together Honors students through fun crafts to educational opportunities. These events allowed me to navigate my through college effectively and progressively. ... Read 1,081 reviews

The small campus feel with a great student to professor ratio helps enable a great developement between each student with their professor in a way big schools cannot. Whenever I feel I am struggling I know I can go to my professor or other students for guidance as the relationships developed in class allow me to do so. The campus is beautiful and is easy to navigate new classes and facilities. I find the biggest struggle to be residency, finding enjoying food or having clean outlets to use the restroom. I believe this is mostly from having freshman housing, as you start from the bottom and build your way up. Freshman: I just finished my first year at Bentley and I had a great experience! They prepare you for the future and that makes me feel good knowing I'll probably have a job right out of college so you get your money's worth. It is a much bigger party school than I expected, with the frat parties. Even though Greek Life is only about 20% it's very prominent on campus and those who are involved in it are very involved. But of course not everyone goes out and there's other things to do if you're not into that. In regards to the food, it was a lot better than people on here make it out to be. I think they improved that last year in particular because of the complaints. There are lots of options in the dining hall, and if worst comes to worst you don't like anything, the other food spots on campus are really good (La Cava, Einsteins, Currito). College is definitely an adjustment for anyone, especially first semester of your freshman year, but everyone I know grew to love Bentley by second semester. ... Read 803 reviews

Welcome to the Philosophy Department

Every human being seeks answers to life’s most basic questions—questions regarding the nature of knowledge, truth, rationality, language, being, transcendence, God, faith, beauty, the good, justice, humanity, friendship, love, sexuality, identity, power, authenticity, and so on. Reflection on such questions remains the core of the study of philosophy.

I've applied to a bunch of schools this cycle for a Ph.D and am waiting to hear back from most of them. I know there really aren't 'safety schools' for philosophy, but does anyone have an idea of schools that generally take more number of students than others? I think I saw on another thread that DePaul takes maybe 4 a year, and I believe Oregon does too. Anyone have any idea about others? Some that I've applied to are Villanova, Boston College, SUNY Stony Brook, UWashington, Georgetown, UNC Chapel Hill....

This year it's going to be...different potentially. U of O apparently is accepting 1 person it seems. University of Washington has historically had cohorts around 4-5 in size but for two years in a row we've gotten lucky with some funding elements that allowed us to bring on more folks. Schools also tend to have a limit on how many international students they can admit every year so, for some folks, that might also make things more chaotic.  After a quick look at past trends (which are rough since we don't always have the number of how many students get accepted each year for all the schools) I would expect that places will be forced to reduce their incoming cohort sized by at least 1-2 folks at minimum and/or they will only be able to make initial offers but not pull from a waitlist in some cases (hopefully rare cases but it did happen last year).

Most programs take 5-7 students in normal years. That number is likely reduced at almost all programs this year. I know that Toronto takes 12 in normal years. Other programs with a large faculty likely do the same.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology: 300+ applicants for 4 spots

Carnegie Mellon University: 170+ applicants for 8 spots ( reported on Jan.29 )

SUNY Stony Brook: 136 applicants for 4 spots ( reported on Feb.18 )

UCSD has numbers on their page. One year they had like a 17% acceptance rate due to a lower number of applicants and a high number of spots. But I think is probably the highest rate there has ever been.

DePaul was 5 slots out of 166 applicants this year.   Oregon is going to be very low this year given they are accepting just 1 student.

I don't think the OP was suggesting otherwise, but just wanted to clarify since there are different kinds of numbers being thrown out in this thread. The acceptance rate (which you're unlikely to find out from departments other than UCSD) is how many people a given dept accepts, not percentage of students that enroll out of the applicant pool. My department typically accepts about three (sometimes up to four) times the number of students they enroll. This year we got about 300 applications (slightly more than usual), and are aiming to enroll 5 students (which is normal), so we will probably (if history is a good guide) end up admitting about 15-20 students, which is a 5-7ish % acceptance rate. (My department is ranked below 30 on the PGR, though I think we get an unusually high # of applications in general, especially now that I've seen UCSD's acceptance rate.) When I was in grad school at a PGR-top-five place, they typically accepted about two times the number of students they enrolled. (UCSD is definitely listing this, not percentage of students that enroll out of their applicant pool; but that means you can't compare it to places where you just know how many students enroll and how many applications there are.)

To throw in one example: places like Michigan are transparent about these things. See here and sort for philosophy:  https://tableau.dsc.umich.edu/t/UM-Public/views/RackhamDoctoralProgramStatistics/ProgramStatistics?:embed=y&:showAppBanner=false&:showShareOptions=true&:display_count=no&:showVizHome=no&FOSDParameter=All+Rackham

I haven't encountered many schools who are like this, but they do exist. I, for one, think departments in every discipline should aim for this kind of transparency, but that would take an institutional change I imagine.

I agree with the point about transparency. Moreover, I wanted to note that the University of British Columbia also makes this information public:  https://www.grad.ubc.ca/prospective-students/graduate-degree-programs/phd-philosophy . If you scroll to the bottom of the page and click the "Enrolment, Duration & Other Stats" dropdown link, enrolment data from 2015-2019 for their Ph.D. program is available. This also holds for their MA program.

I'm interested to see what happens this year with "over accepting" while expecting a certain number to decline. I know one place did this last year and almost everyone accepted (whoops) which contributed to a closed admissions cycle this year.

The extension of the spreadsheet is putting together a 1 page summary outline that departments can use/adapt that captures this type of information along with pertinent application information (e.g., what does "official" transcript mean for your application, what is the application fee, are there fee waivers available, deadlines since a few too many departments ended up having 2 different ones listed this past cycle across pages on their websites, etc.). At this point transparency in the process will make everyone happier I imagine and in a digital age having folks update their information (e.g., Stanford may no longer want 2 official hard copies of transcripts but still had that one their website until this year) would be kinda nice.

My guess is that, because (unfortunately, as has been noted recently) the same folks tend to get accepted to the top programs, even this year, those programs will have a relatively similar yield to usual. On the other hand, lower-ranked programs, which some applicants are in some years less keen on, might see more interest and thus higher yield.
