Book review: diary of a wimpy kid: the getaway.

book review for diary of a wimpy kid the getaway

A family vacation to a tropical island resort should be like a trip to paradise, except that it isn’t when you are the Heffley family.

In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway, the 12th book in the best-selling Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney, Greg and his family take a vacation, hoping to spend some quality family time. But Greg being Greg, and his family being as wacky as he is, have their usual share of unusual problems and struggles that follow them no matter where they may go.

The Getaway is in the typical style of the series, with loads of illustrations depicting the scenes, jokes and toilet humour, Greg’s antics that can make any mum cringe and many twists in the plot.

Greg, who is a first-time flyer, has many fears about flying and all those come out graphically on the pages to give many young readers lots to laugh about.

Dad thinks he is a seasoned traveller but his attempts to show off his skills soon prove him wrong. Mum is bent upon making sure the family spends some quality time together, doing things that typical families do, but hers isn’t a typical family. Greg can’t seem to get along with his siblings, while older brother Rodrick wants to get the freedom teens think is their right and toddler Manny is a handful!

From Greg thinking he has swallowed a sea horse to Manny catching a deadly jellyfish, to a spiders and a monkey that lives in the hotel, there are plenty of animals to spoil the vacation plans of the family. But wait there is more, they even get kicked out of their hotel — obviously for something they didn’t knowingly do wrong.

Despite all the trouble everyone gets into, the only character in the book that I felt sorry for was Mum, who never gets around to having the perfect vacation picture of the family taken.

Diehard Wimpy Kid fans will enjoy this latest offering and those who find it too wacky for their taste, which probably most people over 12 years do, will find it as unbearable as the rest of the books.

I love diary of a wimpy kid, but this one is one of my favorite ones. I love how funny it is! It also shows that when hes afraid of spiders he goes full panic which is super funny when he does. It also shows that not all families are perfect in every way. In conclusion I give this book a 5 stars.

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid The Getaway:Review

All of my older children have been fans of the Diary Of A Wimpy Kid series and there is always great excitement when a new book is released. The realistic, comedy fiction books that are aimed at older children and teens have been capturing the imagination of children since 2007 and have gone from strength to strength.

We have all loved watching the trials and tribulations of Greg Heffley and his family and friends as he struggles with life in and outside school.

His chaotic life with his lovable family and quirky friends draws you in and really allows you to bond with the characters.

There is always great excitement with each new book release so you can imagine the excitement when we were sent a copy of Diary Of A Wimpy Kid The Getaway to preview before its release.

This time we see Greg and his family setting off to warmer climbs to avoid the stress and strain of the Christmas holidays.

As you have probably guessed the visions of a relaxing few days soaking up the sun turns into a disater even before they arrive at the airport.

Flight delays, stomach problems, sunstroke and venomous spiders are just a few of the problems the family encounter on their suposide relaxing getaway.

I will now leave you to find out if the whole of Christmas is ruined of if they manage to grab some kind of good from the usual disastrous situation.

This book has not failed to live up to the other editions and would make a for a great present under the tree this year.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway

Earlier this year we were invited to the screening of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Long Haul . Oh, how we giggled our way through the film. I cannot remember when we last laughed that much. Up until we had watched the film we were aware of the book series, however, hadn’t read any of them for ourselves. Arriving home we ordered the first two books, with the remaining books soon following as we enjoyed them so much.

A book on a table

This year marks a milestone moment for the phenomenally successful series, with the 10th anniversary of the launch of the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid book. Bestselling author Jeff Kinney is marking the series’ anniversary and the publication of the twelfth book in the series,  Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway with his third global tour, meeting and entertaining fans around the world with media and events throughout November and December.

With this new adventure, Diary of A Wimpy Kid: The Getaway , readers won’t be able to stop laughing as they join Greg and his family on a holiday trip to remember. To escape the stress of the holidays, the Heffleys decide to get out of town and go to a resort instead of celebrating Christmas at home, but what’s billed as a stress-free vacation becomes a holiday nightmare. Filled with Kinney’s trademark hilarity, accessibility, and pure fun, this latest Wimpy Kid installment is sure to delight fans once again.

A person reading a book

Arriving the evening before the official release date, Roo and Tigger were treated to a fun sleepover pack. Cosied up in PJ’s and dressing gowns, whilst hot chocolate topped with marshmallows cooled on the side. They sat down to see what antics the Heffley family were getting up to in the twelfth book.

Opening up and reading the first page you are immediately drawn into the storyline. Wanting to hear more about the trials and tribulations of a Heffley family vacation. Following the story unfold through the amazing comic strip illustrations – which assist reluctant readers to pick up the book and guide them along the way.

A piece of paper

I must confess to being drawn into reading the book last night after the children had gone to bed. Before I knew it I had managed to read almost half of the book.

The Getaway (Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book 12) Summary & Study Guide

The Getaway (Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book 12) by Jeff Kinney

(approx. 3 pages at 400 words per page)

The Getaway (Diary of a Wimpy Kid Book 12) Summary & Study Guide Description

The following version of this book was used to create the guide: Kinney, Jeff. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway. Penguin Random House. 2017.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway tells the story of protagonist Greg Heffley going on a tropical vacation with his parents and his two brothers, which descends into chaos and mayhem as everything that can go wrong for the family does go wrong.

The story begins with Greg recounting the reason his parents wanted to go on vacation: they were worried about the stress of celebrating Christmas and thought it would be more fun to take their three sons to Isla de Corales, the tropical resort where they spent their honeymoon. Greg is unhappy about the suggestion but everyone else is enthusiastic.

The vacation gets off to a bad start when the family gets stuck in traffic on their way to the airport making them worry that they will miss their flight. After arriving later than they intended the Heffleys struggle to get through security and make it to their departure gate on time but, when they do arrive, their flight is delayed by several hours.

Once on the airplane, Greg becomes very worried about the possibility of a plane crash and asks the flight attendant lots of questions about the safety of the plane. The family takes it in turns to sit in First Class after Greg’s dad gets an upgrade but Greg misses his turn.

When they arrive at their destination Greg discovers that one of the activities at the resort is swimming with dolphins, which is something he has always wanted to do. He starts to think that the vacation might not be as bad as he was expecting. Greg’s parents’ want to stay in the same suite they stayed in for their honeymoon but they are told that they cannot because the resort has changed and is now split into two sides: the Mild Side, for families, and the Wild Side, which is for adults only.

In their suite, the Heffleys realize that they have collected the wrong suitcase from the airport, meaning that they will have to wear the same clothes for the whole vacation. Greg’s mom warns everyone not to drink the local water but Greg’s dad ignores her and gets very sick. The next day, Greg is scared by a spider in the bathroom and orders room service so that someone will come to help him, but the waiter is also scared of spiders. As a team, Greg and the waiter manage to flush the spider down the toilet.

Greg and his mom try to sign up for some activities and Greg is disappointed to discover that swimming with dolphins is already fully booked. The family tries to eat in the golf clubhouse but they are told that they cannot come in because there is a formal dress code, which the Heffleys cannot follow because they lost their suitcase.

The family goes on a cruise and Greg initially refuses to go in the water because he is afraid of being eaten by sharks or stung by jellyfish but his mom insists that he joins the family in the water where he discovers that he really enjoys snorkeling. Greg panics and swallows a lot of water and his family takes him back to the resort to be checked out by a doctor. Back at the resort, Greg’s younger brother Manny brings a poisonous box jellyfish into the pool area leading to an evacuation and the pool being drained.

Tired of everything going wrong and wanting to have a nice meal, the family decides to wear the clothes from the suitcase they mistakenly picked up at the airport so that they can eat in the golf clubhouse. They are spotted by the family who own the suitcase and are thrown out of the resort for theft.

The next day they all sneak back onto the resort in order to make sure they have one nice day during their vacation. They are spotted once again by the family whose clothes they stole and are chased by security. Greg escapes into the ocean and starts windsurfing to get away from security. He finds himself surrounded by fins and is worried that he is about to be eaten by sharks but it turns out that he is swimming with dolphins.

Greg breaks down the barrier separating the Mild Side and the Wild Side leading to lots of families rushing through to use the Wild Side’s much better facilities. Greg and the rest of his family escape in the confusion.

Back at home, Greg visits the resorts website and sees a picture of his family asking for people who can identify them to come forward.

“The Getaway” – Book Review

book review for diary of a wimpy kid the getaway

THE GETAWAY is the newest DIARY OF A WIMPY KID book.

Summary – It’s Christmas and the Heffleys are way behind on decorating the house. Suddenly, Greg’s Mom and Dad decide that they are going to the resort they had been to for their honeymoon called Isla De Corales. And they are going to fly to the resort. His parents thought a few days in paradise should do wonders to the family. But, as you expect, the roads to the airport were full of traffic. At the airport, after a long security check-in and other surprises, they finally board the plane; but even the flight goes wrong with annoying co-passengers and bawling babies.

At the resort, Greg loved the sunny and warm weather. They did lots of activities which were supposed to be fun but ended up in disasters but that is what always happens to the Heffleys. That is what makes these diaries funny. In this book, they ended up in such soup, that they even got thrown out of the resort. Thankfully, they were able to sneak back in, and have lots of fun. Guess what, Greg got to do one of his wish-list activities for free.

What I liked about the book – The Getaway is the first book where the Heffleys take a flight and go abroad. This book takes you to a nice and warm beach resort with loads of water sports. I loved the section where the family did banana boating. I will not tell you what happens during the boating as that would spoil the fun for you. The other super fun part of the book is when Greg reaches the Dolphin enclosure and gets to swim with dolphins, a long-cherished dream of his.

This book made me laugh out loud with its funny jokes at a lot of places. I read the book during my Christmas holidays, and it was raining and grey in London. So, reading this book felt like I was actually out in the sunny Isla De Corales. I loved the description of all the outdoor sporting activities.

The events in Wimpy kid diaries are always super-strange and disastrous. But, in the Getaway, some of the events feel far-fetched and stretched and are a little too boring to read. I have been on quite a few plane-rides, and the economy class is really not as bad and torturous as it is made out to be. You do get food, even if you have to buy it, and the seats definitely have cushioning.

In this series, the pictures in the books look great and help tell the story. But, in The Getaway, some of the pages have a few too many pictures. This makes the reader get confused between reading the words, and admiring the pictures.

I would say for Diary of the Wimpy kid fans, this is a must-read. But, anyone not familiar with the series, this is not the best book to start with. You will be better off starting with Diary of a Wimpy Kid (the first book of the series).

Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Getaway: a Book Review

DOAWK The Getaway

Jeff Kinney released his newest addition to his series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway , which features the Heffley’s Christmas holiday vacation to a resort, in an effort to evade winter.

The plot heightens when their vacation unexpectedly turns out to be a disaster, taking the reader on a memorable family journey. Problems arise from the very start of their trip when they experience traffic and flight delays.

Just when the reader thinks the Heffleys will finally get a chance to rest, they fall deeper into trouble. One of my favorite moments was when they watch hatching turtles, but the turtles fail to make their way into the water. I could just imagine the degree of disappointment from their anticipation. Another scene I liked was when the family is accused of stealing the “lost-and-found” clothes of another family and are kicked out of the hotel. The family does not want to leave the resort, so they sneak into it. I liked this because it referred to an earlier scene when they found out that they did not bring spare clothes.

One scene I did not enjoy was when Greg goes scuba diving with his family during which he swallows a gulp of water, causing him to go paranoid, forcing the family to visit a doctor. I did not enjoy it because the scene was just too unrealistic. Most parents would not believe their child if they claimed to have swallowed a fish from scuba diving.

The book ends with the Heffleys arriving home safely, but they find out that they are wanted and are forbidden to return to the resort.

As a follower of the series, I wanted to see if the book would be better than its predecessors. The book contained two new characters, the Director of Fun, an employee at the resort, and Rodrick’s new girlfriend. I liked how the book took place in a new setting like Kinney’s The Long Haul . I did not like how the book was not as funny as its predecessors.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to stay up to date on Kinney’s series, but if they are looking for a good laugh, then this book will be disappointing.

Book: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway

Author: Jeff Kinney

Age: 9-12 years

(Note from Asha: This is being posted by me on behalf of my childoo Aarini, aka #the11yearold)

If you’ve been reading the other Wimpy Kid books, you’d know that the Heffley family is the most disorganized and frazzled family ever known. If you haven’t read any other Wimpy Kid books, well, here’s an insight on their latest adventure in a foreign country (no prizes for guessing – it was a mess!).

It all started when Greg’s parents saw an ad of a tropical island resort that they had gone to for their honeymoon, called Isla De Corales, which was also known as “paradise”. Greg’s parents wanted to escape the cold of their home so they decided to fly there for a holiday. According to Greg, he didn’t really like the whole idea of “locking himself in a metal tube and flying there”, but he was outvoted. Everyone wanted to escape to this so-called paradise for winter.

Everything was going fine until they reached the airport, where as expected, they were late and their luggage was overweight. They went inside the plane and Greg and his family went into the economy section while his dad got to sit in business class because of his frequent flyer miles.

Throughout the flight a series of really funny things keep happening which will make you roll with laughter. Seriously! To give you an idea, he was stuck in the middle seat between a couple with a baby who banged the window and who barfed his mashed peas all over them.

It was Greg’s most horrifying flight but it will be the reader’s most hilarious flight to read about for sure.

The crazy stuff doesn’t end here. When they reached their resort rooms, they realized that they had picked up someone else’s luggage, so they had to wear the same pair of clothes that they were wearing for a whole week. The problems didn’t stop here. They were hit by sun poisoning (that’s a thing), stomach troubles and venomous creatures. Just a snapshot of how the Heffley family enjoyed their relaxing holiday in “paradise”.

All in all, this is a very funny and engaging book. I read it in one go and only stopped when my mom called me for meals or when I had to go to school :).

I am a huge fan of the Wimpy Kid series. I have read all of them and own 8 of them. I think The Getaway is my favourite Wimpy Kid book so far. That’s why I thought of writing a review on it.

Whenever the latest Wimpy Kid book is out I hassle my mom to buy it for me. Now I’ll hassle her to buy it from Kids Book Café!

This event book might be so unremarkable compared to the issues books that Wimpy Kid is also known for. I love it when Jeff Kinney explores sibling rivalry, the merits of honesty and dishonesty, a kid's desire to fit in while keeping true to himself, the perils of maintaining friendships when you seem to be growing apart.
