Kareena Kapoor: Biography, Awards & Life Story

biography of kareena kapoor in english

Bollywood legend Kareena Kapoor has performed some of Hindi cinema’s biggest hits as part of her professional career. Kareena is adored for her memorable renditions of the characters, which range from Poo, who was the personification of Y2K style, to the endearing and quirky Geet, whose vivacious banter people still can’t get enough of.

About Kareena Kapoor

Her grandfather named her Sidhima after she was born. However, her mother changed the name to Kareena, citing Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy as an influence.

It may be a surprise to learn that she briefly studied law after dabbling in commerce at Mumbai’s Mithibai College because her initial goal was to become a criminal defense attorney. Before Kareena made her way to Bollywood, she even took a brief microcomputer course at Harvard University.

While most people have not yet seen Kareena Kapoor perform in front of the camera, Kareena was a playback singer for one of the songs from her movie Dev called Jab Nahi Aaye (2002). Additionally, Kareena has written two books. The Style Diary of a Bollywood Diva is the title of her book from 2012. For expectant mothers, the most recent one serves as the definitive pregnancy bible.

She adopted the Madhya Pradesh village of Chanderi in 2010 as part of the NDTV Greenathon Campaign to provide consistent energy. In addition, Kareena represents the organization Swasth Immunized India, which encourages the immunization of children under the age of two.

In keeping with the Kapoor family tradition, her father, Randhir, who is highly protective of his daughters, wanted them to avoid performing, get married, and establish stable lives. Due to this, her parents developed irreconcilable problems, ultimately resulting in a divorce, with both sisters moving out of their father’s house to live with their mother. The following year, Kareena appeared in Santosh Sivan’s historical epic Ashoka, which is based partly on a fictionalized story of the same-named Indian ruler. Kareena found the role of Kaurwaki, a princess of the Kalingan people, tough despite having Shah Rukh Khan as her leading man.

biography of kareena kapoor in english

Childhood & Early Life

Kareena Kapoor was born on 21 September 1980, in Mumbai, India, to Randhir Kapoor and Babita. Both her parents were prominent actors, though her mother stopped acting after marriage. She has an elder sister named Karisma. She is of Punjabi descent from her father’s side and of Sindhi and British descent from her mother’s side.

Born into a family of actors, Kareena was exposed to show business at an early age. She was inspired by actresses such as Meena Kumari and Nargis and wanted to become an actress.

Her father did not want his daughters to enter the film industry. His conservative attitude led to a conflict between her parents and they separated. Kareena and her sister lived with their mother who took up several jobs in order to support the family. Eventually, Karisma became an actress, further motivating her younger sister to follow her dreams.

Kareena went to ‘Jamnabai Narsee School’ in Mumbai, followed by ‘Welham Girls’ School’ in Dehradun. She was not inclined towards academics but performed well in school to keep her mother happy.

She then studied commerce for two years at ‘Mithibai College’ before joining a three-month summer course in microcomputers at ‘Harvard Summer School’ in the United States.

On her return to India, she enrolled at the ‘Government Law College’ in Mumbai, only to drop out after a year. In her late teens, she decided to pursue acting seriously and thus began training under Kishore Namit Kapoor, a member of the ‘Film and Television Institute of India’ (FTII).

Kareena Kapoor made her acting debut in a war film titled ‘Refugee’ in 2000. Aged 19 at the time, she played the role of a Bangladeshi girl who falls in love with a refugee, portrayed by Abhishek Bachchan. The film was a moderate hit and earned the young actress much acclaim.

In 2001, she starred opposite Tusshar Kapoor in Satish Kaushik’s movie ‘Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai.’ The movie was a hit and established Kapoor in the film industry. The same year, she shared screen space with superstars like Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, and Kajol in the film ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…’

She then suffered a major setback when several of her films failed to perform well at the box office. Within a span of two years, six of her films—‘Mujhse Dosti Karoge!,’ ‘Jeena Sirf Merre Liye,’ ‘Talaash: The Hunt Begins…,’ ‘Khushi,’ ‘Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon,’ and ‘LOC Kargil’—flopped.

By the mid-2000s, she had played the stereotypical role of a pretty, superficial girl in a number of films. Determined to avoid being typecast, she took up the challenging role of a sex worker in the film ‘Chameli’ (2004). This role helped her to reinvent her on-screen persona.

In 2006, she acted in three films, ‘36 China Town,’ ‘Chup Chup Ke,’ and ‘Omkara.’ The following year, she played a charming girl named ‘Geet’ in the romantic comedy film ‘Jab We Met,’ which also starred Shahid Kapoor.

She became part of the ensemble cast of the 2009 movie ‘3 Idiots,’ a film loosely based on the novel ‘Five Point Someone’ by Chetan Bhagat. She played a medical student named ‘Pia’ in the film which also had Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi in major roles. The film proved to be a blockbuster.

Kareena Kapoor began the 2010s with a string of hit films: ‘We Are Family’ (2010), ‘Bodyguard’ (2011), ‘Agent Vinod’ (2012), and ‘Heroine’ (2012). Of all these movies, she felt that her portrayal of ‘Mahi Arora’ in ‘Heroine’ was the most challenging.

She got married in late 2012 and reduced her workload in order to devote more time to her family. Over the ensuing years, she did not take up any major projects and did only cameo roles in a handful of films.

She once again became serious about her acting career in 2016 and played the role of ‘Kia,’ a career-oriented young lady, in the film ‘Ki & Ka.’ The same year, she played the role of ‘Dr. Preet Sahni’ in the critically acclaimed film ‘Udta Punjab.’

In 2018, she played ‘Kalindi Puri’ in Shashanka Ghosh’s buddy comedy film ‘Veere Di Wedding.’ In 2019, she portrayed ‘Deepu Batra’ in Raj Mehta’s comedy film ‘Good Newwz.’ The following year, she played ‘Naina’ in a comedy-drama titled ‘Angrezi Medium.’

She played the role of ‘Rupa D’Souza’ in the 2022 Indian comedy-drama film ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ directed by Advait Chandan. The film was a remake of the 1994 American film Forrest Gump and received mixed reviews from critics.

In 2023, she starred as ‘Maya D’Souza’ in the Sujoy Ghosh-directed mystery thriller film ‘Jaane Jaan.’ The film was released on Netflix and garnered a positive response from critics. She also appeared in Hansal Mehta’s crime thriller film ‘The Buckingham Murders.’ The film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in October 2023.

In addition to her film career, she has also launched her own clothing line in association with the retail chain ‘Globus.’ She has also co-authored three books: an autobiographical memoir and two nutrition guides.

Philanthropic Works

Kareena Kapoor is actively involved in a number of philanthropic endeavors. She began working with UNICEF in 2014 to advocate the education of girls. She has also been an ambassador for the ‘Shakti Campaign,’ a project launched by NDTV to combat violence against women.

Major Works

Kareena Kapoor’s portrayal of ‘Dolly Mishra’ in the 2006 crime drama film ‘Omkara’ was much appreciated by the critics. The film was adapted from William Shakespeare’s ‘Othello.’ This role won her the ‘Filmfare Best Actress (Critics) Award.’ The highly acclaimed film was showcased in the ‘Marché du Film’ section at the 2006 ‘Cannes Film Festival.’

In 2007, she played a vivacious woman named ‘Geet’ in the romantic comedy ‘Jab We Met.’ The film narrates the story of two people with contrasting personalities who meet on a train and eventually fall in love. She was lauded for her performance and honored with several awards.

Although known for her beauty and sex appeal, the actress shed her glamorous avatar to play the serious role of ‘Dr. Preet Sahni’ in Abhishek Chaubey’s critically acclaimed film ‘Udta Punjab.’ The movie was about substance abuse in the Indian state of Punjab. Her performance earned her nominations for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ at ‘Filmfare Awards’ and ‘Zee Cine Awards.’

Awards & Achievements

Kareena Kapoor has received six ‘Filmfare Awards’ out of ten nominations. Her awards include ‘Best Female Debut’ in 2000 for ‘Refugee,’ ‘Best Actress’ for ‘Jab We Met’ (2007) and ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for ‘We Are Family’ (2010).

In 2006, she received the ‘Smita Patil Memorial Award’ for her contribution to the Hindi film industry.

Kareena Kapoor was in a relationship with fellow actor Shahid Kapoor. Their relationship gained a lot of media attention and their eventual break-up was also publicized.

She later started dating actor Saif Ali Khan. Initially, the couple kept their relationship under wraps but eventually confirmed that they were dating. The couple got married on 16 October 2012 and welcomed a son named Taimur in December 2016. In February 2021, the couple announced the birth of their second son, Jehangir.

When we talk about film royalty, one name should reverberate worldwide: Kapoor.

India’s eminent acting dynasty first appeared on screen in the 1930s, and still dominates to this day. After generations of raising male actors, the family turned to its daughters and, at the turn of the century, ushered in the era of Kareena Kapoor Khan.

After more than 20 years leading Hindi films, the actor takes her first plunge into producing with Hansal Mehta’s “The Buckingham Murders,” premiering October 14 at the BFI London Film Festival .

“I’ve never really taken any creative decisions,” Khan told IndieWire in a Zoom interview. “I’ve always been more like a hired gun on a project, where I’ve signed on as an actor, and I do my job. I love acting and honestly, even in this film, the creative aspects have been Hansal through everything. He’s the captain of the ship … because I love the story, I lent my name, but apart from too many creative decisions Hansal and Ektaa [Kapoor — no relation] and Balaji [Telefilms] are doing all that.”

“I’m not really very good at all this,” she added with a chuckle. It’s rare for an actor branching out to be quite so candid about their endeavors; indeed, when asked about future creative leaps like directing, Khan shook her head adamantly.

“Definitely not,” she said. “It’s just such a different aspect to things, the way you look at a film and the way an actor performs affects the camera. It’s so much more responsibility, so much more time. This is a first and it’s always a seed into something — you never really know. But the fact that it’s not a typical Bollywood movie with the regular kind of song-and-dance culture, that’s what is slightly different.”

“I was always looking for something that would be different to be on the OTT platform, rather than the commercial genre which I’ve done so much of and will also try to keep doing,” Khan said. “This was something different; it was interesting to also perform in a familiar language like Hindi, which I’m used to performing in, and also do the same film half in English. It was a challenge.”

Khan was the only actor from India on “The Buckingham Murders,” surrounded by English performers. The film feels less Bollywood, more “Broadchurch,” harkening to other British mystery series and procedurals (which Khan watches religiously). Khan isn’t leaving behind commercial Bollywood by any means (her next film, “The Crew” will have all the elements of a typical Indian movie musical), but she enjoys the streamlined shoots and deglamorized roles of these types of films. It’s the wisdom and balance of a firmly established actor and mother of two.

Khan is half of a Bollywood power couple, married to Saif Ali Khan (the son of an actor and professional cricket player, descended from royal lineage). The union was one of her most pivotal career moves — not because of any strategic motivation, but because Khan continued to act after the 2012 marriage, a rarity at the time. Her own sister Karisma and countless other Bollywood actresses over the years quit the industry to become wives and mothers, a model that has now shifted, largely thanks to Khan’s example.

“I think people got a little more confident when I married Saif and threw caution to the winds that I’m not going to give up acting and also have a supportive husband who would be okay with me doing what I like,” she said. “Through every aspect, it’s been a different challenge, but I think with people seeing that I did it, it became a lot more easier for them to take their decision and follow their heart and get married after that. I think now it’s become really cool actually to be a married actress.”

“It’s not possible that we don’t discuss,” Khan said. “I asked him for his advice and his thoughts and what he feels about certain scripts. Saif’s very, very different in his choice of roles. He’s always been so much braver earlier on than I think a lot of actors have. He actually took the plunge of coming on Netflix and doing a show the minute the OTT platform ever came to India [‘Sacred Games’]. He inspires me as well to make some brave choices more often. He does push me for that.”

Saif Ali Khan was not only encouraging but excited for Khan when she first considered “The Buckingham Murders” because of the opportunity to work internationally and watch an entire cast of actors approach the material in their own language — juxtaposed with how Khan and her colleagues approach their work in Hindi. At the same time, she’s far from complacent back in India, where the film industry has changed drastically over two decades.

Again, there’s a wistful quality to Khan accepting that her career as an actor is expanding — wistful, but not dissatisfied. “ The world has grown,” she said. “The world is coming closer and closer and there are more opportunities, so that’s a good thing, but I think I’m a little old school in wanting to just focus on performances.”

But looking back on her decades in the industry, the roles she remembers are those that broke the mold: Mani Ratnam’s “Yuva,” Shakun Batra’s “Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu,” Vishal Bharadwaj’s “Omkara” (an “Othello” adaptation costarring Saif Ali Khan before the two were together).

Even when she sticks to acting, Khan has never been a pure traditionalist — she didn’t even choose acting because of her family, but first tried her hand at law. Her first turn as producer exemplifies that. Whether “The Buckingham Murders” marks the end of that journey doesn’t matter, but is a testament to Khan’s own aptitude for brave choices.

“The Buckingham Murders” premiered at the 2023 BFI London Film Festival and is currently seeking U.S. distribution.

Kareena Kapoor Khan on whether her mother ‘groomed’ her to become a star after ‘moving on’ from Kapoor family: ‘We had a very basic childhood’

Kareena kapoor praised her mother, babita, for providing herself and her sister, karisma kapoor, with a grounded childhood despite their family's filmy background. she also acknowledged the influence of observing her sister's career from a distance..

biography of kareena kapoor in english

Kareena Kapoor Khan recently reflected on her journey in the film industry, acknowledging her mother, Babita, as the cornerstone of her upbringing. She praised her mother for providing herself and her sister, Karisma Kapoor, with a grounded childhood despite their family’s high-profile background. She also acknowledged the influence of observing her sister’s career from a distance, stating that it provided valuable guidance for her own path in the industry.”

Speaking on the BeerBiceps podcast, Kareena spoke about her lineage and how she was never made to feel that she comes from a family of superstars. She said, “My mother came from a very middle-class family. My nana (Hari Shivdasani) was also an actor but we were never made to feel like we come from this filmy family. The first time I went on a set was when I was 8 or 9 years old when Chintu uncle was shooting in Kashmir with Rekha ji. In those days my grandfather ( Raj Kapoor ) was also very relaxed. Nobody felt that they were very big stars. They were very passionate about arts and culture.”

biography of kareena kapoor in english

Reflecting on her parents’ separation and its impact on her childhood , Kareena highlighted her mother’s resilience. She recounted, “Then, of course, my mom moved on and we were shown a childhood that was very basic. My mom would drop us to school bus. My mom still today has no idea of the paparazzi culture. She always told us to work and work means to star in films and not the other things. For them it is all about acting and making a good film.”

She added, “My mom is very self made and she is very strong. She was known as the iron lady because she was very strong about how her children are and she always advocated for the women in the family to work. She always asserted for the right thing.”

When Kareena was asked if her mother ‘was grooming her to become Kareena Kapoor ?’ she said, “My mom was very strongly involved in my sister’s career because Karisma also started when she was just 14 and it was a different time, and she was one of the first in the family who actually was working. At that time, people used to say that light-eyed girls never make it in Bollywood and my mom was like ‘No.’ My mom had a huge hand in that. That also paved the way for me.”

Festive offer

Sharing how she learned all crucial lessons from closely observing Karisma’s career , she said, “I was constantly watching. I think I have lived two careers. Even before things happen, I know how are things going to pan out. I have seen so much. My sister started shooting at the age of 15, I am six years younger to her, so I was there when she gave her first shot. I was Taimur’s age at that time. I have seen her journey. So I am lucky to have that guidance. I watched from the wings.”

Kareena also reflected on the sacrifices she made to pursue her acting ambitions, admitting that she missed out on typical teenage experiences. She said, “I started shooting for Refugee at the age of 18, but the film released when I was 20. I wasn’t doing regular things at 20 like college, parties or sleepovers. I think I paid this price for becoming an actor. But I had that ambition that this is more important to become an actor and for that I have to sacrifice a lot. Now, I take out time to chill with my friends. From the age of 18 to 30, we didn’t even know what does it mean to party. Our parties were like you are chilling with your crew on the set. We grew up on the set.”

Kareena Kapoor Khan Unicef

Bollywood A-list actor Kareena Kapoor Khan has been appointed national ambassador for India by humanitarian organization UNICEF .

UNICEF has been operating in India for 75 years and Kapoor Khan has been serving as the org’s celebrity advocate since 2014. In her new role the actor will support UNICEF India in furthering every child’s right to early childhood development, health, education and gender equality.

Popular on Variety

“I’ve worked very hard and closely [with UNICEF] and we’ve done some amazing work. We’ve gone to schools and spoken to parents and reached their homes. I’ve done a lot of work in Madhya Pradesh, we’ve reached all across Delhi, schools in Mumbai,” Kapoor Khan added. “It’s something that now I’m so close to with having my own two babies that I have so much love and passion for it. I feel it’s come a full circle and the journey, this new chapter is about to begin, which I’m very excited for.”

Besides personal visits, Kapoor Khan will also feature in UNICEF videos advocating for children’s rights that will be disseminated across the world. The actor said that experience of working with UNICEF over the last decade and her own motherhood had made her realize that children want to be heard and that must be nurtured. Kapoor Khan will also actively seek to encourage children who display an aptitude towards the arts.

The actor’s most recent theatrical release is “ Crew ,” which is one of the biggest Indian hits of 2024. Kapoor Khan, Tabu and Kriti Sanon play flight attendants with a failing airline who get involved in gold smuggling to a fictitious Middle Eastern country in an operation that’ll save them and their unpaid colleagues financially. Producers Ektaa R Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor are looking at a sequel.

“If it’s one film that deserves a sequel, it is ‘Crew,’ because I think it was such a refreshing take on women standing their own, using their mind, standing for their rights, in a very fun kind of way. It wasn’t preaching anything… it is film, it is entertainment. And that’s why I think the film did well, because somewhere I think women and families and people went and enjoyed and supported the film,” Kapoor Khan said.

The actor is currently filming “ Singham Again ,” the latest in Rohit Shetty’s cop universe that features Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh and Tiger Shroff among the male leads, which she describes as a “completely male testosterone movie.” “There’s Deepika [Padukone] and me in the film, where we have very strong parts. But obviously it’ll be really different, it is the big ticket Bollywood bonanza for this year, and I’m sure people will enjoy that,” Kapoor Khan said.

Kapoor Khan also has Hansal Mehta’s “The Buckingham Murders” — where she plays a detective and mother who, after losing her own child, must investigate the murder of a 10-year-old in Buckinghamshire — lined up for release. Last year, the actor headlined Netflix original film “Jaane Jaan,” which became the number one non-English film globally for the streamer and was also in the Top 10 in 52 countries.

At the UN House ceremony for Khan, UNICEF India also announced the appointment of its first-ever youth advocates, who have specific areas of interest. Gauranshi Sharma, from Madhya Pradesh, specializes in the right to play and disability inclusion; Kartik Verma From Uttar Pradesh, climate change and child rights advocacy; Nahid Afrin from Assam, mental health and early childhood development while Vinisha Umashankar, from Tamil Nadu, is a budding innovator.

Kareena Kapoor Khan is among the most popular names in Bollywood. Apart from being a reputed actor, she has also worked for social causes. Today, UNICEF India appointed her as its National Ambassador.

Kareena Kapoor has been associated with UNICEF India since 2014 and has worked on issues such as girls' education, gender equality, foundational learning, immunization and breastfeeding.

During the event, she talked about child care, the rights of children and nurturing their confidence.

"Every child deserves a right a right to safety, a right to gender equality, a right to education, safe environments, health and nutrition."

She said her being appointed as UNICEF India's National Ambassador, is a very special moment for her.

"I'm very honoured and very humbled to take on this position. I've worked tirelessly and worked very hard with all my heart. And now, finally, I'm joining them as a national ambassador. But of course, with that comes a huge responsibility which I accept with all my heart to ensure that every child through the corners of India, however vulnerable, wherever he is, whoever she is...I must include when I say every single child, I do not specify gender, I do not want to, voice or no voice, abled or disabled...I specify every single child I will work towards to give them their fundamental right...," she said.

"Every child deserves a fair chance to life, the first five years of their life being their foundation. Every child deserves a childhood, the first five years, once again I repeat, being the most important and formative years. They deserve a right - a right to safety, a right to gender equality, a right to education, primary education, safe environments, health and nutrition. They basically deserve a fair chance at life itself."...

Kareena shared that being a mother of two sons, Taimur and Jeh, she has realized that every child "needs a voice"

"Of course, this role is most important, but the most important role I play in my life is being a mother to my two boys. And I always feel that children need a voice. They like to be heard. Whatever it is, whichever environment they're in, whether it's talking to their parents, talking to their peers, or talking to their teachers, they want to be heard. They want to feel like someone's listening to whatever they're saying, at whatever age, they just want to be heard. And that is something that I make a conscious effort of with my children is if they have a voice, we must, must hear them clearly," she shared.

The 'Crew' star emphasised the need to develop the child's confidence so that they can innovate new ideas and dream big in life.

"And nurturing their confidence. Because confidence gives them the ability to dream, ability to fly, ability to have ideas, to innovate, which they need because children are, they are the future. They are the future of our nation. So to have that, we must build their confidence. So that is also a fundamental right, which we have to do," she said.

"And by that, I mean engaging them in sports, drama, painting, arts, reading, things like that, which we plan to do. And that's what I want. These two things are, I think, the most important thing in the formative years of a child, which I'm quite sure we're going to do in the coming years. And of course, I would like to say that it's been an absolutely tremendous journey, a decade together with UNICEF India," she added.

On the movie front, Kareena is currently basking in the success of 'Crew', in which she shared screen space with Kriti Sanon and Tabu.

Helmed by Rajesh A Krishnan, 'Crew' revolves around the journey of three working women set against the backdrop of the aviation industry.

The film also stars Diljit Dosanjh, Kapil Sharma, Saswata Chatterjee, Rajesh Sharma and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.

In the coming months, she will be seen headlining Hansal Mehta's 'The Buckingham Murders'. She also has Rohit Shetty's 'Singham Again' in her kitty.
