The Biography Channel is being replaced by a network devoted to the most fascinating person in the world: you

Following more than a decade of ironically trying to figure out who it was, the Biography Channel is going away next summer, A&E has announced, ending the ill-defined reality network it launched in 1999 as a home for its once-popular Biography series. As the years passed, and as viewers only came to be interested in people’s life stories if they involved murders or ghosts, Biography Channel renamed itself “Bio” and loaded up on shows about the paranormal and the mob in an increasingly familiar, desperate bid to keep up. And now that identity crisis will result in its total rebranding as FYI—an upscale lifestyle network with a “younger and more modern sensibility,” according to a press release, which also says FYI stands for “for your inspiration, for your imagination, or for your innovation.”

Related Content

But definitely not “for your information,” as network president Jana Bennett says FYI will offer viewers “a less prescriptive, more adventurous approach to their taste, space, social life and look,” rather than the staid, dictatorial imposition of useful facts. “Gone are the days where consumers are looking for experts to instruct them how to live,” Bennett says of this new age and generation, which prefers television that validates its self-aggrandizement, rather than forcing them to consider other people and their “knowledge.”

FYI has yet to announce any actual programming, but considering the press release’s talk about the channel “reflecting how people actually live their lives,” and its equally vague pronouncements of FYI being “a personalized experience for each viewer,” it’s possible FYI won’t air anything but a blank screen, thereby allowing people to just stare into their TVs like a mirror.

The Biography Channel (or simply bio.) is an American digital cable television channel owned by A&E and based on the television series of the same name. A version of the channel also airs on ONO and Telefónica in Spain and on Sky Digital and cable television in the United Kingdom, a version of the channel also broadcasts in Canada owned by Rogers Media and in Australia. It is a digital cable, category 1 television channel in Canada. In 2007 a German and a Latin American version of the Biography Channel were launched. Biography Channel began programming in 1999. In addition to biographical shows, the network has been airing fictional, non-biographical programming previously seen on A&E, including Murder, She Wrote and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, though this practice ended in 2007.

As of August 2006, the Biography Channel became the exclusive home for the Biography series, which was also dropped by A&E.

On Monday, July 16, 2007, the Biography Channel unveiled a new logo, a new tagline ("True Story") and revamped its on-air look and feel. Although the channel will refer to itself as Bio in much of its branding, the Biography Channel name is still in use as a subheading within the channel logo and for other network business.

Ybeth Bruzual — Anchor

Ybeth Bruzual has been with Spectrum News 13 since June 1998, working her way from an assignment editor, to a Spanish language news reporter/anchor, to her current position as the face of Your Morning News.

Ybeth is passionate about being able to provide people with news 24 hours a day, telling viewers about what is happening right away and going beyond the headlines.

The University of Central Florida graduate loves informing people about new things in the community — and knowing that maybe they’ll even walk away knowing something new. Great storytelling is important to her, since thoughtful content shows that Spectrum News 13 cares. Ybeth has been in Central Florida since 1981, when her mother moved from Puerto Rico to Orlando. The avid cyclist is a native Spanish-speaker and learned English when she came to Orlando.

Ybeth is a respected journalist and was honored as one of Orlando’s Women of the Year 2019. A two-time Emmy winner, Ybeth earned her first Emmy in 2016 for her coverage of the Orlando United Pulse vigil, which is still one of the most meaningful stories she’s covered. She earned a second in 2019 for her coverage of Puerto Rico on both the island and mainland in the series Hurricane Maria: Healing a Humanitarian Crisis. Ybeth is also a four-time Emmy nominee and has countless awards, including Valencia College’s 2018 most Distinguished Alumna Award. She was part of a team that was awarded an Associated Press Broadcast Award for Public Affairs, Documentary and TV Magazine in 2018. Ybeth has extensively covered politics for Spectrum News.

Ybeth traveled to Puerto Rico again in January 2020 to cover the series of earthquakes that rocked the island. She was on the island 24 hours after the strongest quake hit — the strongest to ever strike Puerto Rico — covering the destruction and telling the people's stories.

A proud mom, Ybeth notes her son’s love of roller coasters. Now, they're a roller coaster family, traveling the country looking for a new ride. Ybeth met her 6-foot-7 husband — who towers over her — on an airplane. He’s a former professional basketball player from Puerto Rico. In her free time, Ybeth loves to cook, bike ride, and work in the garden.

Ybeth remembers playing at Lake Downey Park as a child and thinks the Central Florida community has a great mix of well-designed, adventurous trails for walking, bike-riding or running; plus theme parks for all types and price ranges, from Disney World and SeaWorld to Fun Spot America and Lil 500 Go-Kart tracks. Ybeth loves the restaurant options here and explores them all, from Linda's La Cantina, Beth's Burger Bar, and Pig Floyd's Urban Barbakoa to beachside eateries on either side of I-4.

BRITNEY HAMILTON

METEOROLOGIST-PHYSICIST-DIGITAL JOURNALIST

IMG-6115

I was born in Los Angeles, California, but North Carolina raised me. My interest in weather was sparked in middle middle school when Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast. I wanted to know everything about hurricanes (i.e structure, forecasting, societal impacts). Ultimately, my interest in hurricanes grew into a full-fledged love for weather.

I graduated from Providence High School knowing I wanted to pursue a career in meteorology. I attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where I received my Bachelor’s in Meteorology with minors in Mathematics and Spanish . My education did not end there. I headed to North Carolina A&T State University where I developed plenty of AGGIE PRIDE and received my Master’s degree in Physics with a concentration in atmospheric science.

I started my career as a Freelance Meteorologist at FOX 46 Charlotte in July 2016. During my time as a freelancer, I covered multiple severe thunderstorms and hurricanes that directly impacted North Carolina (Matthew and Hermine). After showing my passion for forecasting and keeping viewers safe, I became the Weekend Morning Meteorologist/Digital Journalist for the station. From there, I covered countless severe weather outbreaks, hurricanes, winter storms, etc.

I joined the weather production team at The Weather Channel in Atlanta, GA, in 2020. During that time, I created weather graphics for the on-camera meteorologists, pitched weather story ideas, and worked closely with the line producer and executive producer to build shows. I covered many different types of weather all over the country!

In October 2021, I joined Spectrum News 1 NC in Raleigh. I’m currently the weekday morning meteorologist for the Triad (Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem). I am enjoying being back in North Carolina! I also teach Broadcast Meteorology at one of my alma maters, North Carolina A&T State University.

When I’m not geeking out about weather and physics, I enjoy experimenting with different recipes in the kitchen. It’s fun to see what I can come up with. It’s way more fun to taste the creations! Traveling is also one of my passions. I’ve visited 10 countries and I’m always looking to add more to the list.
