How to Start a Bar Lounge Business in Nigeria + BUSINESS PLAN

by BusinessPlan 1 Comment

There is a major increase in the consumption of alcohol despite the so called financial recession that is been experienced all over the nation and the rising religious beliefs that kicks against the consumption of anything that contains alcohol like beer, wine, alcoholic beverages, etc.

Every part of the nation consumes alcohol, without regards to tribe, ethnic beliefs or background and religious stand; this means that the manufacturers of alcoholic drinks make nationwide sales and recent statistics shows a steady rise in the sale of these drinks.

Types of Bars

If owning a bar is a dream for you or a passion, one thing you must consider is out of the many types of bar that exist; which will you want to start up? This question may sound not serious but it’s a determinant of how much capital you will need to have, location for your business or the types of alcoholic drinks that will be sold in your place of business.

  • Neighborhood Bar

When it comes to this kind of bar you don’t may not need so much money to start or your startup capital most likely depends on the location of this business; but on average you won’t spend so much of money here because it is not high class most of the time and the beers sold here are not too expensive. In an average Nigerian neighborhood bar a bottle of beer may vary from 250-400 naira depending on the brand that is been sold to the individual. In starting this bar you may just need the following to kick start:

  • Sound system
  • Cups and plates
  • Any other thing that is added on this list is just an addition

The major purpose of starting a sport bar is for customers to watch sports and drink so the concern is that they are comfortable to drink and watch some sport. This is like what we call in Nigeria a viewing center but the difference is that alcoholic drinks are sold while people watch their favorite sports and sport channels. You need to prepare for this as you would prepare for a neighborhood bar and much more by adding more televisions and having satellite TV and constant subscription to keep the place lively and customers wanting more.

  • Specialty Bar

In this specialty bar assorted drinks are sold from beer to wine, martini and other assorted drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic; snacks and appetizers are also sold here. In this kind of bar, your sale has a lot to do with how much you can package and present yourself especially because it is not the norm in this part of the world.

The difference between a club and other bar is that it is more like a party setting most of the time, with loud music, DJ, attendants, security, etc. they all serve alcoholic drinks

Setting up a club is more expensive others because of the modalities of fixing the place up, publicity etc.

In light of these, it is clear that the pros of starting a bar far outweighs the cons especially financially. Below are some of the few but necessary steps that one must follow to start up a bar in Nigeria. We will give a fairly generalized approach to starting a bar which can also be used by others willing to start-up something with similar operations with a bar

Steps to Starting a Bar Lounge in Nigeria

  • Build A Business Plan

One truth that still stands is the need for a business plan and for this to work you must do adequate study on the business, market, customers and many more. Do a feasibility report on the business to know pitfalls, risks, peak/off peak periods, pros and cons of the business before you start.

Failure to have a business plan and doing a detail feasibility study can lead to deadly pitfalls and errors that can be catastrophic that have hindered people growth and this may lead to closure of the business. There are several helpful tips to help you successfully draft a business plan; here are a few:

– Make an outline of your chosen business concept in details. Avoid a summarized business plan. -you need to include detailed profit and loss analysis for the business, record every dime that you will spend or that will come. – What are the benefits of your present business location above others? List them. – What kind of help will you need in terms of staff? Write them down and how much they will be paid for their services. – Make an outline of all possible risks that may be encountered in the business.

When putting your thoughts and plans on paper be sure to be as clear as possible on the concepts for adequate communication. Make sure you outline what you are going to do, how you are going to do it and how much everything will cost to help you plan and prepare properly.

  • Business Structure / Type Of Bar

Before you put in money into the startup it is important to clarify the kind of structure you want to start; this means that you need to consider how big or how small you want to start and what category of the many kinds of bar you want to invest in. This will determine your location which will in turn decide how much you will spend in starting up the business. You have several choices as to how to start. Here below are a few suggestions on how you can start:

Purchasing an existing bar

To save yourself the rigors of starting afresh, you can buy up an existing bar. This saves you from the pain of failure even before you had the chance to really start up; one of the benefits of buying an existing bar is that it may come at a much cheaper rate than having to start on all over, because the person selling his business may be selling out of desperation of moving from one city to the other or other financial difficulty which will give you a higher bargaining power for a great deal. Here are a few tips you may need before buying the bar

  • Do a lot of research about the business before you put your money; also research on the business owner, his personality amongst other things.
  • Visit the bar a couple of time if not frequently without invitation, see how business fair there on a bad day, normal day and a good day. This will give you a fair idea of how much you stand to gain from buying over the business.
  • Ask every question: ask the right question and also do not be bias about your question after experiencing first hand.
  • Get contacts of other support staff like, chef, barman and so on.
  • Be sure of the reason for sale of the business; you don’t want to fall into a trap of legal issues.
  • Carry out a complete inventory before and after purchasing the business t be able to keep track of all that you have and the their state.

Starting one up from the scratch:

Despite the thought of starting your own from the scratch sounds interesting and fun you must remember that this process is usually a long and expensive process to go through; since everything will be fresh and done from beginning. There is a limit to which you can bargain unlike the option of buying the business over from an existing owner. All expenses here are subject to the current state of the economy not the state of the equipment and structure like the previous.

  • Your Customer Base

Most of these points that have been listed so far are one building block upon another this helps to produce a finished product that will bring much financial gain and societal influence; so if one of these points is out of place it produces an unstable structure. In this point we will consider the customer in line with the location of the business. Your customer base cannot be the high and mighty in the society then the location of your business will be in a rural area. You have to be able to know who you expect to patronize your business and the proximity of these people to your place of business; putting in mind that if it is too far from them then your patronage will most likely reduce maybe by half.

You also cannot locate your business in a highly religious community and expect to thrive.

Know the alcohol trend; it is important to note the most wanted alcohol in the society so as to be up to date and attracts the nature of customers you want.

  • Be Familiar With Your Competition

At this point it is important to note that this is not a brand new idea, so you should expect competition; possibly not so far from you. You need to know your competition and preempt them. Visit their establishment and see things firsthand for yourself; study their strengths and also weaknesses as this will help you to structure your establishment better and attract more customers and even their customer. Talk to the staff or the owner, a lot of people are willing to talk about their business even to their own hurt without knowing. Try this.

  • Choose Your Own Winning Strategy

After studying your environment, the customers and ultimately your competition it is important that you draw out a take-down strategy. This strategy is a step-by-step approach on how to get all that you want and bring the customers that you want. Do not be afraid because the strategy may turn your competition to enemies but as far as you want to succeed in business you will hated.

Think of things to do in a bigger, better and faster way than your competition; this will give you the desired result.

Here is a list of few points:

Better customer service

Better prices for commodity

Adequate publicity

General increased customer satisfaction

Relaxed atmosphere

Business Registration

To avoid struggling with authorities immediately you kick off is to register the business with agencies that regulate businesses like this. Contact CAC (Corporate Affair Commission) for business name registration and you can contact Local Government Agencies to register with them. If your bar is high class you may want to contact fire, building and safety agencies to inspect and approve you structure. Also install safety gadgets like fire extinguishers and so on.

  • Purchase Your Equipment

One important factor to consider is the purchase of equipment; you don’t want to buy what you don’t really need in your bar or buy what will get bad within a very short time because of quality. It is important to save for quality equipment and not be attracted by quantity or flashiness.

These are few questions you may want to ask before purchasing any piece of equipment.

  • Does the equipment improve the production and service of your bar?
  • Is there enough space to fit this piece of equipment?
  • Does this piece of equipment fit in with the concept and setting of your bar?
  • Does the equipment meet your expectations and all standards for quality for speed, volume, and quality?
  • How easy is it to operate by staff and how safe is it?
  • What is the cost of maintenance and fixing in the event it gets spoilt?

Ø  Hire Competent Staff

To keep your business from crumbling, you have to employ competent and well trained staffers; take your time to hire them and if they are not delivering or performing their task you intend be quick fire them. You cannot keep staff at the expense of your business. You can also get people that have been in the business or have experience in the field. This would help your business grow because they can preempt the needs of the customers to the growth of the business.

To get these kind of people you can make post on social media, other media but most especially referrals works well in this case, because it saves you a lot since the person in question has got hands-on skills you need that was picked up from doing this kind of job along time.

Depending on the category of your business you can visit a bartender school to pick up one or two skilled individual.

Head hunting is also another way you can get competent staff but this raises red flags and can quickly put you among the hate list of other business owners

Promote And Publicize Your Bar

It is one thing to have a great place which usually speak for itself and have a great way of also creating referrals for you but if you want this to happen very fast then you need to do some publicity. If your customer service is impeccable then you are assured of word of mouth helping your business to grow but social media can also help too.

You can have video testimonials with pictures which will be posted on most if not all social media platforms; this will go a very long way and most people will give your place a try within a short time and if it’s as they saw on the social media then you are assured of having them as permanent customers

Many times you find yourself in a hard place dealing with trouble makers; at such point you may not want to get directly involved as the business owner or put your staff in such awkward position, so the need for one or two security personnel depending on the size of your establishment cannot be over emphasized.

This security is for the safety of lives first which cannot be negotiated and the protection of properties, to avoid unnecessary loses.

In conclusion, the ownership of a bar is not a business you want to just start and go to sleep. You need a lot of monitoring to do; you can employ someone whose job is to monitor but you must monitor everything that happens there. Records all ins and outs; because this business can increase you in every way e.g. financially, influence and connection etc. it is a business that brings income to you daily, from Mondays – Sundays all year round especially at month ends and festive period.

We are glad because if you have read this, then this is the first step to becoming financially free. Keep it up.

How to start bar business in nigeria (secret guide).

' data-src=

One of the profitable businesses in Nigeria is a lounge or bar business also known as beer parlour business. Bar business is profitable because all Nigerians drink and they love to have a good time relaxing after the day’s job and during weekends. Although we have a huge number of Nigerians that drink alcohol we have other than some who do not drink.

But even at this Nigerians who do not drink alcohol still love to have a good time by drinking juice or Chapman or soft drinks as a form of relaxation. Asides from the huge demand for alcoholic drinks and non-alcoholic drinks in Nigeria as a form of relaxation, there are also foods like pepper soup, roasted fish, asun, and suya that are in demand in bars.

In Nigeria, bar business or lounge is lucrative as long as you get a few things right. Some of these things are location, customer attraction , customer service, and the ability to keep drinks and foods well. So far in Nigeria, I have visited a few bars, especially in Lagos, and what I can tell you their owners make money week in and week out.

When other jobs or work closes at 5 PM every weekday in Nigeria bar business begins at 6 PM and never ends till daybreak. It is said that they make more money during weekends as they open at 12PM and close 6AM. In a bar business, there are things you need to also put in place to make things run well.

Things like security and also rules and regulation for everyday customers because it is often said anywhere there is no law there’s no sin. I am saying this because I have witnessed some bars closed down all in the name of fights that got people injured or killed. Security, rules, and regulations protect you and your bar business from customers and the government.

Is Bar Business Profitable?

Beer parlour business is a profitable and lucrative business in Nigeria as long as you know how to attract your customers and retain your customers and you are able to get your drinks from the right places with favourable prices.

Whether it is beer, palm wine, cocktail drinks or alcoholic drinks, or non-alcoholic drinks as long as you know where you can buy these drinks at the lowest prices and are able to sell them at a higher price you will make huge profits. An example is a beer bought at N179 and sold at N250.

It is also profitable or lucrative because you make money from the business every day not only on drinks but on other businesses you operate in the bar lounge-like sales of food, operation of a relaxation center, and establishment of a football viewing center .

Capital Needed to Start Bar Business

To start a bar or lounge business in Nigeria you will need a capital of N500,000 – N2,000,000 as the capital you need depends on the area you want the business to be. If it is in a low-income area – a rural area the capital you will need to start the bar business cannot be more than N500k.

But if the area you want to set up the bar business in an urban area it will cost you more – probably up to N2M. This capital can be self-invested if you have the money or borrowed from a reliable source but my best advice here is that you start with what you have and as time goes by grow the business.

Equipment Needed for Bar Business

There are the equipment needed when it comes to starting a bar business, beer parpour business, or lounge business in Nigeria. These are:

1. Refrigerators

2. Wine shelves

3. Television

4. Generator

8. Wine and Beer cups

To put all the electric equipment in their right places you might need the services of an electrician and to put all the furniture in place you might need the services of a carpenter.

Drinks Sold in Lounge Business

Below are the different types of drinks you can sell for your bar business in Nigeria. These are:

2. Soft drink

3. Wine (Red and Other Kinds of Wine)

5. Cocktails

6. Water (Bottled)

7. Energy drinks

Now, let’s go on to discuss how to start and run a bar in Nigeria.

How to Start Beer Parlour Business in Nigeria

How to start and run a profitable bar business in Nigeria.

1. Get the Required Capital

When it comes to opening a bar business in Nigeria or a lounge business or a beer parlour business the first step you need to take is getting your capital. As we usually say capital is important in any business except of cause you’re into charity business. You need capital not just to rent a shop or space but also to buy furniture, lights, cooking equipment, and drinks.

And the larger the capital you invest in your bar business the bigger the profits you will make in the business. It is just like any other business in Nigeria as regards capital.

2. Rent a Shop or Space

When it comes to setting up a bar business in Nigeria you can either rent a shop or space. A shop is good in the sense that it permits your bar business to be on the side of any major road of your choice while space is good as it helps you to accommodate more customers in one sitting.

Basically, if you rent a space your customers will not need to wait for each other before they can have seats to relax and drink. If it is a shop you can have about 30 customers at a sitting but if it is a space you can have as many as 100 customers at a sitting depending on how big the space is and how you are able to manage it.

Asides from considering whether to rent a shop or space for your bar business you need to also consider the location where you want the bar to be. Remember your business is about selling foods and drinks to Nigerians. You cannot sell if your bar business is located where people cannot see you or find you easily.

Make sure any place you are renting for your bar business is a place where thousands of likely customers pass every day whether on their way back from work or on their way out of their houses.

3. Set up your Bar Business

After you have gotten your shop or space the next step you should take is to set up your bar. In setting up your bar you need to consider the positions where your wine counter will be, the kitchen, store, refrigerators, generator, and furniture (table and chairs) for customers. In this case, it is best for your kitchen and store to be in an area where people will have less access to.

Only your bar workers should have access to these areas. Let us quickly talk about the important equipment you will need to set up a bar business in Nigeria.

4. Buy your Drinks Wholesale

After installing the equipment in your bar and making sure everything is fine, proceed to buy the drinks for your bar. These drinks should be bought assorted so as to be able to satisfy each customer’s need. Also, it should be bought from wholesalers so that you can get the drinks at their lowest prices and to be able to sell at any price you desire.

Since beer is the cheapest alcoholic drink and the highest drink in demand at bars you can buy more of it than any other drink. Shoprite buys all its drinks from wholesalers sometimes even from the manufacturing companies itself. This is why their drinks are the cheapest compared to drinks sold in any other malls or shops.

Although Shoprite cannot be considered a bar business it still shows us how they are wise in their buying. All drinks (beers, wine, spirits, and champagne) should be bought and stored in a store with lock and key.

5. Start Selling Drinks

Since your business is different because you open at night instead of the day you can use the daytime to prepare ahead. During the day time, you can put all drinks needed for the night in the fridge and also go to the market to buy foodstuff for customers that will likely order some food alongside their drinks.

Food ingredients like, fish (croaker and catfish), goat head, pepper soup ingredients, and the like should be bought and kept in the fridge till they will be needed at night by customers. Note: Catfish should be kept alive for customers who like to point and kill.

On the evening of the first day of business, open your bar, and make the place lively by playing some loud music this will attract customers into the bar. Also, invite your friends and family to your bar to come hang out there.

6. Employ Helping Hands

Some tips on how to run a bar. Bar business can be very tiring especially when you have too many customers on ground to attend to at the same time so to reduce the stress you can employ other people that can help you run the business. If you cannot employ staff because of the inability to pay them salary, for now, you can employ your family to help and give them tips instead.

7. Keep your Bar Clean Always

Hygiene is very important in a bar. The inability to maintain this can cause unpleasant smells and this is not good for your customers and sanitation officers that will be coming around for inspection often. They can lock down your bar business just because of this so it is very important to keep the bar clean before and after the close of business.

8. Manage Bar Expenses

Expenses like electricity bills can be a huge expense if you run your bar business both on NEPA and generator so my best advice for you here is to cut off your business from NEPA and run only on gen – putting on your gen only during business hours.

9. Attracting Customers in the Bar

There are different ways you can attract customers to your bar business in Nigeria. Some of these are:

A. Give Good Customer Service

Although this sounds like a cliché good customer service is still scarce when you visit bars today. So you can attract more customers to your bar by just giving quality customer service to people who will be visiting your bar, especially the first-timers.

B. Provide Adequate Security

I talked about this briefly in my introduction. No one will want to be in a place where they are not sure of their security which includes their lives and property. You can attract customers to your bar by providing security in and around your bar. When customers know that they are safe anytime they come to relax they will always want to visit your bar.

C. Encourage Live Events and Parties

You can also attract huge customers to your bar business by encouraging and allowing people to host their birthday bashes and live events like comedy shows. For a start you can charge for a token for these events and as time goes by increase the charges. You will also be making profits by doing this because they will buy drinks needed for the events from you.

Bar business in Nigeria is lucrative if you can follow all tips given in this article. Remember that you can start small for now and as time goes by grow the business.

Details of How to Start A Profitable Beer Parlour Business in Nigeria

Adedapo Adesanya

By Adedapo Adesanya

One of the most profitable businesses that a would-be entrepreneur can establish in Nigeria is a bar business because many Nigerians like to be happy amid the sufferings and drinks, especially those with alcohol, provide that happiness option.

Like many other businesses, running a bar, usually called beer palour, has things one should put into consideration before venturing into and they would be highlighted in this piece.

The first consideration is interest. This comes in many forms. The interest of the entrepreneur will determine whatever mission and vision he or she has for the business. Without interest in the beer parlour business, a lot of things can go wrong.

Based on a number of factors, a beer parlour business varies is size; it may be small scale, medium scale, or large scale. A small scale can contain a maximum of 50 customers, a medium will take between 50 to 100 customers, and anything more than that means that is a large scale establishment. Once the would-be entrepreneur identifies what sort of beer parlour, he or she wants to run, issues like capital, location, and number of expected customers can follow.

This article will use a small scale beer parlour as a case study.

Running a business needs money and to start a small scale beer parlour can between N600,000 and N3 million, depending on the location the owner wants to situate the business. This will cover rent up to a year and constructing the structure to fit the taste of the entrepreneur, with the different gadgets and instruments needed to run it smoothly like sound system, television set and others.

A good location is something to consider. For a small scale bar, which can house about 50 customers, it is very necessary to situate it where is accessible, where cars can park and probably in a serene environment because of entertainment.

A calm environment is the best place to situate a beer parlour. With this actualized, the beer parlour must be designed for comfort – this means that it must be conducive. If it is an open space, there will be need for fans, while in a enclosed space, it is necessary that the entrepreneur invests in more fans and air conditioning systems.

A beer parlour is a place of relaxation; therefore, there must be a good structure such as rest rooms, kitchens, lounges, roofing, flooring, and a working water system in place because people are likely to use the restroom often due to the constant consumption of beer.

The kitchens will serve as where other side dishes that augment the beer will be prepared. This is an additional means of revenue and also used to keep more people coming. Here, you have eatables ranging from meat, pepper soup, and other local delicacies.

Also, a well-lit store may be needed for drinks that have not been refrigerated yet based on demand. This will help keep the business in stock.

Equipment and Furniture

In a beer parlour, the chairs must outnumber the customers. For a small scale with 50 customers, the entrepreneur has to make room for at least 55 chairs because of guests and tag-alongs. This may be complemented with 30 tables. With chairs costing N15,000 per dozen, the total amount to procure chairs for a small sized beer parlour should be N70,000 and with a market value of N4,000 per table, this amount to N120,000, giving a total of N190,000 for the chairs and tables.

Refrigerators are also needed (at least 2) in anticipation of high demand for beers, which most consumers prefer. Refrigerators are needed to cool the drinks. An average fridge costs N120,000 and two will amount to at least N240,000. Alternatively, an entrepreneur can go for chillers, in the same price range, which prevent bottles from breaking and losses for the business.

Another item needed is the television set and sound system; they serve entertainment purposes. A TV set can be purchased for as low as N45,000 (32 inch) and a sound system of like N15,000 are good to keep the customers entertained while ‘chilling’ at your bar.

You can also keep N100,000 for openers, glass cups, straws, and other miscellaneous items, including subscription for payTV services to show European Club football matches, which attract huge following.

Estimated Total:N580,000.

Registering the business

A registered business gives it an authentic outlook, hence, the business should be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) under a name. In addition, all other entities that deal with consumption must be alerted in order to carry out routine checkup for health and service compliance.

Get A Wholesaler

The beer parlour business is a retail business and to get drinks at cheaper prices, it is advisable to get a wholesaler who will provide the drinks in large quantity.

A beer parlour business is a very demanding task, therefore, the principal must constantly think of ways to keep his or her customers satisfied, because the customers will determine the outcome to a large extent.

Setting up a profitable beer parlour business can be tasking but it can be done right by following the steps outlined above. You also have to make your customers feel at home to keep them coming back to drink at your place. You should constantly ask them things you need to improve on.

How lucrative a cocktail bar business in Nigeria can be?

Bar business is one of the top 5 most lucrative businesses in Nigeria that you can start with a little investment and turn to a big enterprise.

Let’s find out how much money you may be making in a carton of beer, to see if that will encourage you enough!

A carton of bear contains 12/24 bottles sales for N2, 300 or N4,600 at cost price. Selling each of them for N200/N250 makes about 250 x 12 = N3,000.

So, your income per carton is N700. If you sell 10 cartons a day, you will make N7,000. Being multiplied by 24 days (except Sundays), that gives N168,000 in a month.

For the expensive cocktail bars, we have that a carton of beer goes for N2, 300 at cost price. This can be sole for N500 per bottle.

So, N500 x 12 = N6,000. So, you gain N6,000 – N2,300 = N3,700. If you will sell 10 cartons, you will get N37, 000. Imagine you are doing it daily for 30 days!

How To Start Beer Parlour Business in Nigeria or Africa: Complete Guide

How To Start A Lucrative Beer Parlour Business In Nigeria Or Africa: The Complete Guide | Image: Pixabay

All across the world, beer is widely consumed. According to historical reports, China has been producing beer for well over 7000 years. It is the third most popular drink after water and tea, and the highest alcoholic beverage in terms of consumption. As a result, the global brewing market continues to enjoy massive growth over the years.

In 2017, the global beer market was valued at about $593 billion, and it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 1.8% within 2019 and 2025 to reach at least $685 billion. Individual countries of the world generate millions of dollars from the beer industry, with China taking the first spot with about $85 billion generated from 45.7 billion litres in 2019. China alone holds 20% of the global alcohol market value. They are followed by the United States, which produces over 21 million kilolitres of beer per annum. Other major producers are Brazil, Mexico and Germany.

However, the situation is different with exportation. Statistics reveal that Czech Republic generates $330.6 million per annum and a CAGR of 2.1%, making the country the biggest exporter of beer worldwide. They are followed by Denmark ($276.5 million) and China ($255.3 million). On the other hand, the United States and France spent $5.9b and $1b respectively on imported beer in 2019.

Although there is an increase in health awareness in the country, Nigeria currently produces 17.72 million hectolitres per annum. Going by available statistics, reports say the volume is bound to grow to 53 million hectolitres at a CAGR of 6% within the next ten years. More so, the regular competition between major bigguns in the Nigerian brewery industry such as Guinness Plc., Nigeria Breweries and others, has festered the market value of beer in the country.

Despite the competition, however, a beer parlour business remains a lucrative business in every part of Nigeria, ranging from cities to villages. Nigerians have a strong relaxation culture, and most people prefer to ‘relax’ with a few bottles of beer after a workday. In 2016, Nigerians spent over N203 billion on beer and South-South states such as Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, were at the forefront. In essence, the beer parlour business is a highly lucrative one with steady demands. If you’re planning to start a lucrative beer parlour business in Nigeria, here is a detailed step-by-step guide to help you.

What Is Beer?

Beer refers to the alcoholic drink brewed mostly from cereal grains such as barley, rice, maize and wheat. While brewing, many other substances such as hops, fruits or herbs may be added, depending on the brand in question. Although beer is generally alcoholic, the alcohol levels may range from as low as 0.5% to as high as 40%! The commercial brewing of beer is common in most parts of the world, and large companies have made their mark with the production of beer.

What Is A Beer Parlour Business?

A beer parlour business involves retailing beer in bits, typically in bottles and cans, to everyday consumers. In many parts of Nigeria, beer parlours are major relaxation centres where people go to unwind after a hard day’s work. The beer parlour is often a reasonably large shop that can contain about 20 to 50 customers at a time. Beer Parlour owners add side attractions like entertainment and foods like pepper soup to make the service complete. In more modern parlours, an air conditioner system is installed to make the buyers feel comfortable.

Business Opportunities In Beer Parlour Business In Nigeria And Around The World

A beer parlour business creates windows of opportunities in the following categories:

1). Selling And Bartending Services:

Every beer parlour requires the services of smart people who can attend to customers without losing track of sales. This is especially important in large beer parlours where customers run into hundreds, particularly at weekends. Sales personnel or bartenders are needed to drive the activities of the business regularly as customers come in.

2). Food Production:

Since beer is a subsidiary of the food and beverage industry, it is not out of place for beer parlours to add snacks and meals to their services. As a matter of fact, in most beer parlours in Nigeria, the people prefer pepper soup, asun, goat meat and other assorted dishes with their chilled beer. A beer parlour business will require the services of cooks to undertake this.

3). Distribution:

The supply chain from manufacturers to local retailers and beer parlour business owners is operated by young, agile distributors. They deliver beer in volumes of crates to beer parlours across the country, and that keeps them employed.

Facts And Benefits Of Beer

Contrary to popular opinion, beer holds certain health benefits. They include:

How To Start A Lucrative Bar Business In Nigeria

bar business plan in nigeria

Bar business is on the list of top five lucrative businesses that you can start with low capital and grow big. But, there is a question of; how? There are many patterns of running a bar, some common, some expensive.

First of all, let’s analyze how much you may be making in a carton of beer, to see if it is encouraging enough.

There are 12 or 24 bottles per a carton. You may buy a carton for N2,300 or N4,600. And sell them for N200 or N250. Calculating from the latter, 250x 12=3,000. That means you have made from a carton N700. Now if you sell 4 cartons a night, you have made N2,800.

This analysis is for the common type of bar business. For the expensive type, the analysis goes like this-

A carton- N2,300. Price per a bottle-N400. 400×12 =N4,800. If you sell 4 cartons a night, you will have N19,200.

This analysis is strictly on what you will make from the drinks, there are a whole lot of other things that would bring more money. You will see them down the line of my discussion on the process of starting both the common, and the expensive bars.

1. The Common Bar Business

Three out of five streets bear witness of the proliferation of bar . Its competitive status is also undeniable. Therefore, it requires some strategies to win customers and keep them. Which starts from knowing exactly what your customers want, and how they want it.

The first thing to consider before every other thing is the location. The amount of people who live, or come around your location will determine the inflow of people. And the inflow of people will determine patronage. So, get a place with this prospects in view.

Get a good name

It is important that every business has a name that distinguishes it from others. And bar isn’t an exception. Therefore, make a simple name that people will have no trouble calling. If anyone has to meet anyone in your bar; it’s an easy call.

Bar activities always happen in the night, which means, you need a backup generator in case the usual thing happens, (power failure) and to  keep other necessities that require electricity in their place.

Refrigerator

Another crucial part of it. They always ask: is it cold? A good refrigerator will answer that question. Some alcohol beverage are better served chilled, and that is one the purposes that a generator would serve. There should not be an excuse of power failure.

It triggers ones mood of relaxation and extrovertism. Sometimes, there could be a need to shake it off, (dance) and music will serve the purpose. However, the type of music to be served may depend on your location and the type of people who patronize you.

Drinks are better served with meats, fish, or pepper soup. You may not have to serve them all, but choose any that will satisfy your customers. Point and kill, and pepper soup are better options, because they contain pepper, and are always hot. Moreover, smoke fish, and barbecue are popular choice. If you cannot do it all by yourself, make a franchise, get people who specialize on any of those, and give him, or her a stand.

Football matches

Get connected to a digital TV network. Nigeria is a football nation, most of the people who drink, may want to do so while seeing a football match. If your bar does not have such a facility, your customers will look for another place they could have it.

SEE ALSO: How To Start A Football Viewing Center In Nigeria

The price of a drink

Another thing that could draw people close, or chase them away is how much they are paying for a bottle. If they find a little difference in price “nearby” that favors them. They may be tempted go there. So, the best thing is to make the price as affordable as possible.

2. The Expensive Bar Business

The differences in the process of setting up a “common bar”, and “expensive bar” isn’t much, but matter. In expensive bar, the location has to be in a serene environment.

It may use the setting of a hotel bar, even though it’s just a bar. This is because, people’s lifestyle differs, some like it where it is cool. So get a quiet location, and set it up in way that fits the interest of the cool guys. Every of the aforementioned steps should be taken in setting up expensive bars, yet some other additions.

Air condition

Unlike the common bar, you need to make the atmosphere conducive through air conditioners.

Adding more fun to drinks. Set up games like snooker, squash etc. Make sure you have a specious indoor place for the bar to accommodate all the items.

NOTE: The money paid for drinks does not cover for games, if any customer wishes to play, he pays. But you will have to decide on price per game.

SEE ALSO:   How To Start A Computer Game Center

The common bar doesn’t have rules for smoking, in fact everything goes. But here, you need to establish a (to be or not be) rule. Some people may actually come to your bar because it’s a non smoking bar. Others may not come because they would not be allowed to smoke. Your decision is a standard you have chosen to be known by.

Add wine to your menu

Since choices differ, it would be appropriate if you put wine in your bar. A lot of people would appreciate having something different from beer or gin.

Starting a Bar Business in Nigeria: Essential Steps and Costs You Need to Know

Here is a step-by-step guide into how to start and run a successful bar business in nigeria, detailing all costs you'll face.

Carson O.

Starting a bar business in Nigeria requires careful planning, strategic decision-making, and a solid understanding of the financial landscape. From securing a suitable location to estimating startup costs and managing operational expenses, here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the complexities of launching your bar business in Nigeria.

Crafting Your Business Plan

A robust business plan is crucial for laying the foundation of your bar business.

Define your concept—whether it’s a cosy neighbourhood pub, an upscale cocktail lounge, or a themed bar catering to specific demographics. Conduct thorough market research to identify your target audience and understand your competitors.

Outline your marketing strategy, financial projections, and operational plan.

Specify staffing requirements, including skilled bartenders, servers, cleaners, and possibly a chef if you plan to offer food.

A well-structured business plan not only guides your day-to-day operations but also serves as a roadmap for growth and investment.

Legal and Regulatory Requirements

Navigating Nigeria’s regulatory environment is essential for a smooth business launch.

Register your business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and obtain necessary licenses and permits. This includes a liquor license, health permits, fire safety clearance, and potentially entertainment licenses depending on your bar’s offerings and location.

Compliance with these regulations ensures legal operation and avoids potential legal issues that could disrupt your business.

Securing a Suitable Location

Choosing the right location is critical to the success of your bar business.

Factors such as foot traffic, visibility, accessibility, and proximity to your target demographic should guide your decision. Rental costs vary significantly across Nigerian cities—budget accordingly based on the size and location of your chosen space.

Ensure the location aligns with your business concept and complies with zoning regulations to create an inviting atmosphere that attracts customers.

Capital Requirements

Launching a bar business involves significant initial investment:

  • Space Rental or Purchase : Costs can range widely based on city and location. In major cities like Lagos or Abuja, expect rental costs to start around ₦2,000,000 per year for a medium-sized space.
  • Renovations and Equipment : Budget approximately ₦1,000,000 to ₦3,000,000 for renovations and equipment. This includes bar counters, furniture, lighting, sound systems, kitchen appliances (if offering food), and decor to create an appealing ambience.
  • Initial Inventory : Stocking up on alcoholic beverages, mixers, soft drinks, and barware will require an initial investment of around ₦500,000 to ₦2,000,000, depending on your menu offerings and customer preferences.
  • Operating Expenses : Budget for ongoing expenses such as staff salaries (₦300,000 to ₦1,000,000 per month), utilities, insurance, marketing efforts, and inventory replenishment to ensure smooth operations.

Staffing and Operational Needs

Building a capable team is essential for delivering excellent customer service and maintaining operational efficiency.

Hire skilled bartenders proficient in mixology, knowledgeable servers attentive to customer needs, and diligent cleaners dedicated to maintaining cleanliness.

Consider hiring a chef if your bar offers a food menu—investing in staff training and creating a positive work environment promotes staff retention and enhances overall service quality.

Marketing and Customer Experience

Effective marketing strategies are crucial for attracting patrons and establishing your bar’s reputation.

Utilize digital marketing platforms, social media channels, local advertising, and partnerships with community events to increase visibility.

Focus on creating a welcoming atmosphere, offering high-quality beverages, and delivering exceptional customer service to foster repeat business and positive word-of-mouth referrals.

Financial Management and Sustainability

Prudent financial management is key to long-term business sustainability.

Monitor cash flow closely, track expenses rigorously, and maintain a financial buffer to cover unforeseen costs and seasonal fluctuations.

Implement cost-effective measures without compromising service quality to optimize operational efficiency and maximize profitability.

Regularly evaluate financial performance against projected targets and adjust strategies as needed to achieve business goals and maintain competitiveness in the market.

Launching a bar business in Nigeria requires meticulous planning, adherence to regulatory requirements, and strategic execution across various operational facets.

By focusing on crafting a detailed business plan, securing an optimal location, estimating startup costs accurately, assembling a proficient team, implementing effective marketing strategies, and ensuring financial sustainability, entrepreneurs can position themselves for success in the competitive hospitality industry.

How to Write A Business Plan in Nigeria (Template for Nigerian Businesses)

how to write a business plan

The first time I thought about writing a business plan was when a friend asked for my help writing his. I could imagine the stress he had gone through before asking for my help.

Many times, the subject of a business plan comes up when one wants to start a business, and for the majority of people, it almost always seems like some special type of document that only gurus write.

A large number of Nigerian startups fail to understand the true significance of this one document. This fact has made many Nigerian business startups botch the preparation of their business plans by focusing totally on the wrong things.

Good plans prune your projections into realistic thresholds and consider as many parameters as are available to you.

Before we move on to how to write a business plan, we need to define and establish what a business plan is or what it should be.

Table of Contents

What is a Business Plan?

A business plan is a document describing a business, its products or services, how it earns (or will earn) money, its leadership and staffing, its financing, its operations model, and many other details essential to its success.

A well-written business plan should be able to prove to just about anyone who reads it how feasible your goals are, including potential investo rs.

How to Write A Business Plan (Template for Nigerian Businesses)

Writing a business plan may seem daunting and complicated, but with a systematic approach, you can easily achieve this task with the right guidance.

Below are strategies to help you narrow it down to easily actionable bits.

Know the purpose of the plan

When an entity’s purpose is unknown, abuse is inevitable, and often this tendency is not effectively maximising such.

Before unknowingly wasting precious time writing a plan that wouldn’t fit its purpose, you must know who exactly is going to be reading your plan before taking any steps.

For example, a simple plan written to attract investors would always differ from one written for internal use only.

Furthermore, before writing any part of your plan, even in the search for investors, you should consider especially who your readers are and try as much to cater to their particular expectations without losing track of your initial road map.

You should also aim to make your plan adaptable, editing it as the situation demands.

Draft an executive summary

A good executive summary is a key section of your plan—it’s also the last section you should write.

The executive summary’s purpose is to briefly describe the other parts of your plan. It usually is the part of your plan that convinces the reader if they want to know more about your business.

It’s also an overview of your business that persuades investors to read further. This is why you mustn’t make mistakes here.

While writing, keep in mind that it’s a summary, so make sure to highlight the key points you’ve uncovered

Whatever summary you end up putting on the plan would serve as the façade, the doorway into your plan.

Be as brief as you can. Be passionate.

Describe your company

This section of your business plan is the simplest part of the whole process. It caters for two fundamental questions: who are you, and what do you plan to do? Answering these questions introduces why you’re in business, why you’re different, what you have going for you, and why you’re a good investment bet.

Starting from a proper description of your company, you must share all the relevant information that connects to form your typical brand business plan.

These include market or industry analysis, organisation and management, service or product line, marketing and sales, your operations plan and your financial projections.

Make sure to present as detailed a description as possible using whatever medium can portray your ideas the best – tables, charts, verified industry statistics etc.

Do a thorough research

It doesn’t matter if you ever intend for anyone else to read it.

To write the most functional and perfect business plan, you need to know many things, which means research. It’s also called “doing a market analysis.”

It should include an overview of how big your estimate of the market is for your products, an analysis of your business’ position in the market, and a general overview of the competitive landscape.

It’s considered a safe bet to spend twice as much time researching as you would drafting the actual business plan.

This is because entrepreneurs need to know their market sphere, customers, and product and services very intimately to draw any plan of relevance.

Doing thorough research must include reading everything you can afford to read, talking to people, and seeking professional counsel. You should also check out videos on YouTube on what you are about. Scour the internet.

Finally, as a business owner, you’ll have to eventually make it into a habit and constantly inform yourself whenever the chance presents itself.

Competitive analysis

After doing a market analysis, the next thing you should add to your business plan is a competitive analysis, i.e., you need to know who your competitors are. You cannot do this effectively if you do not take the time to study them. A good reason an investor would choose your business is if you have been able to study your competition and find a means to produce your services and products that are unique, better, and distinguishable.

Take note of actual and estimated figures

When you are starting a business and using expected figures, you need to communicate that properly so as not to mislead investors. Of course, you should have actual figures if you are already running your business.

Read Also: How to Write a Good Pitch: The Ultimate Guide for Freelancers

Service or product plan

This section should explain your service’s life cycle and what you sell. Explain how this benefits your customers. Share plans of intellectual property filings and research on your product or service. Also, describe the problem you are solving and how you plan to solve it. Of course, you have to talk about the competition as well.

Outline management and organisation

Your business plan’s management and organisation section should tell readers about who’s running your company. Detail the legal structure of your business. Communicate whether you’ll incorporate your business as a corporation or create a limited partnership or sole proprietorship.

If you have a management team, use an organisational chart to show your company’s internal structure, including the roles, responsibilities, and relationships between people in your chart.

Communicate how each person will contribute to the success of your startup. If you do not have enough hands to produce the desired result, have a plan to hire capable people to fill in the gap.

You can add documents (resumes, permits, leases, product pictures, letters of reference, etc.) to support your business plan; however, this is optional.

As you write a business plan that serves its purpose, remember that your words should persuade the reader and convince them as it convinced you.

how to start a restaurant business in Nigeria

How to start a Restaurant in Nigeria: The Legal Issues

Starting a restaurant in nigeria: the legal issues.

Restaurants in Nigeria are big business. In this article, we will discuss the legal considerations entrepreneurs should have when looking to start a restaurant in Nigeria. Unfortunately, we will not be looking at the operational and business viability aspects of starting a restaurant in Nigeria, as that is not our expertise, our expertise is the law, and that is what we will stick to.

Starting a restaurant in Nigeria has its own set of legal considerations. These include choosing the right business structure, obtaining the proper licenses and permits, paying the relevant fees and levies, dealing with health and safety, getting adequate insurance, dealing with employees etc.

Choosing the right Business Structure

In order to set up your restaurant business in Nigeria there are potentially 4 types of structures you could adopt. You could decide to register as sole proprietorship, a partnership, a limited liability partnership (in Lagos) or a limited liability company. For the purposes of this article, we will only be discussing 2 types – sole proprietorship (registered business name) and the limited liability company.

A registered business name provides you with a flexible business structure with very little formal restrictions placed on you as the business owner. However, the biggest legal risk is the fact that there is no separate legal personality between you the owner and the business. In other words, in the eyes of the law, you and the business are one and the same. This means that you will have unlimited personal liability for things which emanate from the business. This personal liability can be towards customers, competitors, lenders, employees, and even the government.

An illustration of this would be if a customer suffered from food poisoning after eating a meal at your restaurant. You as the owner could be sued by your customer, and because there is no separate legal personality, you would be sued in your name as well as the business, and any legal liability would be unlimited towards you as the owner. Therefore, something that happened in the business could easily bankrupt you the owner.

On the other hand, setting up a limited liability company is generally the preferred structure for doing business in Nigeria, as it gives you the founder, limited liability from the company. The company has a separate legal personality from the person/people who set it up. So, if we use the same food poisoning illustration, if it occurred, and you were sued, it would be the company that would be sued and not you personally.

Also, from the perspective of a restaurant business, it also has certain tax benefits, for instance when you buy new (expensive) kitchen equipment for your restaurant, it can be purchased in the company name and then classified as a cost of the business rather than a personal expense.

We therefore suggest that setting up a limited liability company is probably the best structure for a restaurant to decide to adopt.

Licenses and Permits

In order to commence your restaurant business in Nigeria, you will need to obtain a variety of licenses and permits. In some cases, the licences you will need to obtain will be at the Local Government office, in other cases it might be at an agency of the State Government. Ensuring that you have the appropriate licences and permits is critical to your setting up of your restaurant business in Nigeria. The types of licences and permits vary by location, and so it is important that you seek out professional legal advice in the restaurant set up phase. Also, if for instance your restaurant will sell alcoholic beverages, there is a certain licence that will be required. If your business will be open at night time, or potentially past midnight, there is a specific permit that will need to be obtained. Getting the right legal support is therefore critical to starting your restaurant business on the right footing from a licence and permit perspective.

Health and Safety

The restaurant business is a very delicate and sensitive business, this is because restaurants are all about people eating food, therefore they are subject to significant regulations regarding food health and safety. Apart from the obvious permit which will be required for the preparation and handling of food, you should expect that your restaurant will be subject to regular monitoring and inspections by the local government or State government to ensure that you are keeping up to the relevant health and safety standards. Inspections may cover not only the food itself, raw and prepared, but also refrigeration systems, cooking equipment, and waste disposal, among other areas.

Apart from the health and safety of the food, another issue is the physical health and safety of the customers while in your restaurant. If your restaurant will be serving large numbers of people you may have crowd control issues and, therefore, need to obtain a license or permit from a fire or police department. Similarly, you probably will also need a permit or license relating to adequacy of exits from the restaurant and related emergency issues.

In running a restaurant in Nigeria, there are some restaurant-specific risks which exist like the customers or employees slipping and falling on the premises, someone getting hurt from hot liquid or broken glass, or someone becoming seriously ill from the food itself. These are on top of more generic business risks such as fire, theft, or other sources of property damage or personal injury.

It is therefore important that as someone interested in the restaurant business in Nigeria you sit down with your lawyer and an insurance agent to assess what the risks are, and try to protect your business from those risks by taking out adequate insurance policies. This is in addition to the compulsory insurance which already exists and which business owners in Nigeria must take out, for example – Occupiers Liability Insurance – This insurance is compulsory for all “public buildings” i.e. any building that is not 100% used by the owner for residential purposes. Occupiers Liability Insurance provides compensation in events of bodily injury, death and property damage in case of building collapse, fire, earthquakes, storm or flood.

Franchising

Franchising is a business model where the owners, or “franchisors”, sell the rights to their business logo, name, and model to third party retail outlets, owned by independent, third party operators, called “franchisees”. Franchises are an extremely common way of doing business, examples of well-known franchise business models include McDonalds, Subway, KFC, Dominos etc.

In the restaurant business, if you sign up to a franchising business model, you as the franchisee, would have to first pay an initial fee for the rights to the business, training, and the equipment required by that franchise. Once the restaurant begins operating, you will generally pay the franchisor an ongoing royalty payment, either on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis. This payment is usually calculated as a percentage of the franchise operation’s gross sales. After the contract has been signed, you will open a replica of the franchise restaurant, under the direction of the franchisor. You will not have as much control over the restaurant as you would have over their own business model, but you may benefit from investing in an already-established, name brand.

If this is the business model you intend to adopt, then it is imperative that you hire the services of a lawyer to not only review the Franchise Agreement, but also to conduct some due diligence on the franchisor to ensure there are no inherent risks that the franchisor might have which could impact on your restaurant e.g. existing litigation.

Intellectual Property

Discussing intellectual property in an article about starting a restaurant business in Nigeria might seem strange, but it is a very valid legal consideration to have. Today branding is key to the creation and survival of a thriving business, and therefore it is important that you protect your brand. The best way to protect your brand is by protecting the trademark.

When choosing your brand, you need to make sure it is available and does not infringe on anyone’s existing trademark, it is always advisable to get a lawyer to conduct a trademark search. Failing to research a brand before adopting it can lead to denial of registration by the Trademark registry or, worse, a cease and desist letter from another brand owner. Therefore, spending the time, money, and effort up front to determine whether a brand is available will help avoid the very high costs of a dispute or litigation.

Trademarks are also a potentially valuable asset which could appreciate in value over time, the more your business reputation and customer base grows, the more valuable your brand will be and  can lead the way for expansion. If for instance you have big plans for your restaurant and you want to be able to franchise it at some point in the future, you definitely need to ensure that the brand is protected. Registering the trademark ensures that you are in the right legal position to be able to franchise your restaurant.

Apart from your brand, you could also consider trademarking some of your foods, for example McDonalds has registered trademarks on a number of their foods e.g. the ‘Big Mac’ burger and the ‘Chicken McNuggets’.

Finally, we come to what people love the most…tax!

There are number of compulsory taxes for all businesses in Nigeria, for example Companies Income Tax, Education Tax, Value Added Tax, etc. However, in certain States in Nigeria there are additional taxes which have been imposed on restaurants. For example in Lagos, the Lagos State Government imposes a sales/consumption tax of 5% on services provided in restaurants within the State.

Before setting up a restaurant therefore it is important that you get a lawyer who is familiar with the tax implications on your business and can ensure that you do not fall foul of the relevant laws.
