In an increasingly competitive, business development depends on the effective management of assets, including by the maximum concentration of resources on the core activity of the organization. However, as a rule, any organization is “burdened” with non-core but no less important services for its functioning: IT, accounting, legal department, etc. In order to successfully exist and develop without wasting resources, organization can eliminate non-core business functions to outsource. Nowadays, the popularity of outsourcing is growing and firmly entrenched in the minds of the global business community.

According to the experts of Outsourcing Institute, outsourcing of business process is an emerging view of the optimization of enterprises, with the largest increase observed in the field of finance and accounting. Statistics gathered in 1997 by the American Management Association showed that already 20% of surveyed 600 firms outsource at least some of the financial and accounting operations, and 80% – part of the administrative functions (Spring, 2010, pp.171-172).

Outsourcing is the transfer of non-core business processes to third parties. The first outsourcing services were a bit different, it was an outsourcing of personnel, ie the involvement of employees of another firm to perform some tasks. Today, outsourcing is used in various fields, but most often it is used in warehousing and logistics.

Advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing

Outsourcing has many advantages, it gives a chance to save on different resources. Organization can focus attention on the processes which are directly profitable and reduced overhead costs. Outsourcing saves training costs. Besides, it eliminates the need to increase the number of staff of the company at the expense of non-core business process. Outsourcing allows the company’s management and key employees to concentrate on their core business. With the help of outsourcing, there is a redistribution of organizational resources, previously involved in minor roles and directions. Outsourcing ensures continuous uptime (no holidays and sickness). Outsourcing is a major time savings (you can buy ready-made solutions, infrastructure). Outsourcing involves greater transparency (result matters, not the process). Changing outsourcer is easier than changing personnel. Using outsourcing, a company significantly reduces its risks (sharing them with outsourcer). Outsourcing leads to an increase in quality due to the professionals in the business, their experience in similar projects. At the same time, in addition to the obvious benefits, outsourcing has a number of “traps” or risks (Srabotic, 2012, p. 205).

Risk 1: Customer’s lack of experience of work with outsourcing on the one hand, and declared experience of the Contractor outsourcer – on the other. This problem can be solved by testing outsourcer, using recommendations and trial stages of interaction.

Risk 2: lack of standards and methodology entails difficulties of measuring the results and quality. You can avoid this by breaking the contract on the result, requirement of measurable standards.

Risk 3: lack of organizational involvement. Avoiding is possible by relaying responsibility for the process on the Contractor.

Risk 4: waiting for incredible results.

Risk 10: possibility of termination of the contract with the outsourcer (bankruptcy of outsourcer, returning functions inside the business). Keep in mind possible alienation, documented system or repossession.

Risk 11: unscheduled time costs – success in the interaction (active participation of the customer: functions of tasks’ producer, monitoring and acceptance of work, introduction.)

Risk 12: tax risks. There are increased risk and interest in contracts of services and the complexity of proving economic benefit (Solakivi, 2011, pp.131-132).

However, apart from “traps” of outsourcing for customers, there are “trap” for performers, ie outsourcers themselves:

  • Outsourcing contract is usually signed for a long period, and this means that there is a risk of future costs and risks, as being dependent on the customer, contractor might work for long period without profit, and sometimes at a loss.
  • Reorganization of processes within the organization may induce its management to the early completion of the contract and resubmitting maintenance of functions back to internal divisions, but in accordance with the new processes.
  • Waiting for incredible results.
  • Changing requirements (awareness of opportunities) during the execution of the contract.
  • Change of the creditworthiness of the customer with the planned resources and unsaleable unique product (Sauer, 2013, p.8).

Logistics outsourcing

Outsourcing in logistics today for many companies has become the most optimal way to solve logistical problems, such as the delivery of goods or the compilation of transport schemes. It is not possible to debug business processes in logistics without a comprehensive work of highly skilled professionals. Many companies spend considerable sums for hiring a professional to ensure coordination of transport processes, without receiving a good result. That is why currently the most rational decision in this area is considered to be a logistics outsourcing. Services of this kind allow partial or full transfer of organizing business processes to experienced professionals without hiring them to the staff of the company.

It is necessary to clarify that logistics is one of the main tools to improve business efficiency and competitiveness. Its main task is to manage the information, financial and material flow with minimum costs. It is worth emphasizing that the outsourcing services are successfully used in the logistics strategy to minimize investment in logistics, as will significantly reduce the cost of logistics business processes.

The basis of any logistics business lies in an integrated management and optimization of material flows. Therefore, personnel outsourcing allows firms to transfer the logistics function partially or completely. As a result of the release of some of the financial and managerial resources, it becomes possible to focus on core business processes. Thus, outsourcing in logistics helps strengthen the competitive advantages of the company and becomes the key to its future development.

Because of the huge number of offers on the market today, it becomes more difficult to obtain a weighty profit, doing only the development of production and marketing. Outsourcing in logistics enhances profitability by reducing costs. The reduction of logistics costs, if using outsourcing services, is just 1%, which is comparable to 10% increase in sales (Wallenburg, 2010, pp.579-581).

Recently, commercial and industrial companies are increasingly paying attention to the staff outsourcing. The reason is the increasing complexity of conditions and business technologies and the growing importance of its infrastructure components. Naturally, for many industrial and commercial enterprises logistics is not core competencies. Using outsourcing services, such organizations can fully devote themselves to the development of core activities. While the staff outsourcing, who will direct all its potential for development and improvement of logistics processes, ensures the maximum quality of the goods or services of the company.

Many logistics companies that use outsourcing of staff note that finding qualified staff to employ is difficult. The fact that outsourcing allows regular employees not to spend time on ineffective or non-core but necessary processes, provides shortening of time for product development and increase the speed of adaptation to regular changes in market conditions.

Logistics outsourcing services may include the following areas:

  • Integrated logistics.
  • Optimization of existing and development of new storage schemes;
  • Coordination of the procurement and supply of goods, as well as its labeling, packaging, etc.
  • Registration of customs documentation and freight;

  • emergence of new ideas for the realization of which the company must go through some changes. Outsourcing of personnel can help in implementation;
  • the need to get a more interesting experience, which can be obtained only through outsourcing staff who will inject new ideas into the company;
  • need for quick and quality optimization of the logistics department, without any loss on training new employees, outsourcing will avoid decrease in the overall performance of the company;
  • most effective way to transfer minor cost from permanent to variables is logistics outsource;

As practice shows, the firm that provides outsourcing services has a higher motivation for efficiency than own departments of the company. Logistics outsourcing, as in any other sphere of production, is characterized by the fact that the implementing organization has direct financial obligation for the quality of performed work.

Key benefits and advantages of logistics outsourcing:

  • reduction of risks associated with the implementation of logistics processes as they are passed on to a company that provides outsourcing services;
  • decrease in the percentage of capital investments, which often also go to the contractor company;
  • focus on core competencies promotes the improvement of key processes and gaining additional competitive advantage.

Thus, outsourcing of staff, which will take on the implementation of logistics processes, provides a dynamic development of the company, management of which will deal only with strategic objectives. It can be concluded that logistics outsourcing has a strong potential for the development of the modern market.

Eventually, many companies come to conclusion that it is almost unreal to establish the business processes in the logistics field without the complex interaction of experienced professionals. Some companies invest huge sums on the training and hiring large number of staff responsible for the coordination of transport and storage processes, while others believe that outsourcing in logistics is the best way to solve logistical problems. In the first case, it is not always possible to achieve good results, that is why many companies prefer to transfer all or part of the business processes organization to proven professionals without hiring them to the staff (Zavrsnik, 2011, p. 520).

Classification of operators

Professionals in logistics quite often use specific terminology for judging the competence of a particular logistics operator:

  • 1PL – independent autonomous logistics. Shipper independently performs all necessary operations;
  • 2PL – providing traditional services of warehouse management and transportation;
  • 3PL – standard list of services complemented by other operations, such as: overload, storage, handling, etc.;
  • 4PL – involves integration of all the firms that are involved in the supply chain. Log provider of this class is responsible for planning, management and control of all logistics business processes of the customer, which allows reaching long-term strategic goals and expand the business of the client;
  • 5PL – management of all components included in a single supply chain of products using electronic means of information processing (Hartmann, 2012, pp. 526-527).

Logistics outsourcing means a transfer of logistics processes to a third party. The essence of this service is to reduce the company’s costs, implementation of the supply of products through the involvement of one or more qualified professionals – logistics operators.

Logistics outsourcing services may include the following areas: integrated logistics, optimization of existing and development of new storage schemes; coordination of the procurement and supply of goods, as well as its labeling, packaging, etc.; custom documentation and cargo; development of optimal transport schemes. The development of economy and technologies brings numerous advantages in our world. All of us enjoy the contemporary era of speedily evolving branches of life. However, we sometimes do not notice the other side of this medal. In recent period of globalization and multi-national expansion there appeared controversial phenomena – outsourcing. In couple of words outsourcing means moving resources to low-cost countries. Is it positive or negative? Let us try to think about merits and demerits of outsourcing.

Of no doubt outsourcing does have significant advantages. Great number of corporations has already accepted this policy of business and now faces numerous benefits. Transferring business functions may bring sound savings as business in low-cost countries is usually much cheaper than inside. Sometimes quality of final product or service may be reduced together with expenses, but the final quality-cost ratio appears more preferable.

According to the policy of competitive advantage such quality level reduction is not meaningful here. Recently more and more foreign employees get appropriate education and training in order to perform better quality results. Outsourcing also creates new jobs, according to Kripalani (2003). Developing countries like India or China benefit soundly from outsourcing as it solves serious problems of employment, education, wages, and as a result quality of life. Due to these advantages outsourcing is nowadays involved in various fields of business. It started in manufacturing, yet now it distributed to accounting, IT technologies, engineering, telemarketing, software developing, public and human relations, journalism, and many other areas. Hence benefits of outsourcing for corporations are obvious: low labor costs, increased productivity, opportunity of positioning onto international market.

Many economists and politics (like “left” parties) consider outsourcing a strategy harmful for national economy. They are not completely wrong. Outsourcing indeed has some certain disadvantages that make it much less preferable from definite standpoints. The major disadvantage of outsourcing is depriving local specialists of stable jobs. This aspect is very important to my mind. According to Reingold (2004), numerous American employees faced changes caused by outsourcing policy and suffered soundly from them. Being fired from their companies, many people stay unemployed, and this fact is scaring. Besides, quality level of outsourced services sometimes is too low. Moreover, the subject of security becomes more and more acute in the area of outsourced production. The issue of fraud is put under the spotlight now. Hence the disadvantages of outsourcing are: lowering quality, increased insecurity of business, and depriving domestic workers of jobs. Hence, outsourcing has both advantages and disadvantages, as any phenomena in contemporary business.

If you are looking for the “secret formula” for writing a “winning” college essay, you have come to the wrong place. The reality is there is no silver bullet or strategy to write your way to an acceptance. There is not one topic or approach that will guarantee a favorable outcome.

At the end of the day, every admission office just wants to know more about you, what you value, and what excites you. They want to hear about your experiences through your own words and in your own voice. As you set out to write your essay, you will no doubt get input (both sought-after and unsolicited) on what to write. But how about what NOT to write? There are avoidable blunders that applicants frequently make in drafting their essays. I asked college admission leaders, who have read thousands of submissions, to share their thoughts.

Don’t Go In There

There is wide consensus on this first one, so before you call on your Jedi mind tricks or predictive analytics, listen to the voices of a diverse range of admission deans. Peter Hagan, executive director of admissions at Syracuse University, sums it up best, saying, “I would recommend that students try not to get inside of our heads. He adds, “Too often the focus is on what they think we want.”

Andy Strickler, dean of admission and financial aid at Connecticut College agrees, warning, “Do NOT get caught in the trap of trying to figure out what is going to impress the admission committee. You have NO idea who is going to read your essay and what is going to connect with them. So, don't try to guess that.” Victoria Romero, vice president for enrollment, at Scripps College adds, “Do not write about something you don’t care about.” She says, “I think students try to figure out what an admission officer wants to read, and the reality is the reader begins every next essay with no expectations about the content THEY want to read.” Chrystal Russell, dean of admission at Hampden-Sydney College, agrees, saying, “If you're not interested in writing it, we will not be interested when reading it.” Jay Jacobs, vice provost for enrollment management at the University of Vermont elaborates, advising. “Don’t try to make yourself sound any different than you are.” He says, “The number one goal for admission officers is to better understand the applicant, what they like to do, what they want to do, where they spend the majority of their time, and what makes them tick. If a student stays genuine to that, it will shine through and make an engaging and successful essay.”

Don’t Be Artificial

The headlines about college admission are dominated by stories about artificial intelligence and the college essay. Let’s set some ground rules–to allow ChatGPT or some other tool to do your work is not only unethical, it is also unintelligent. The only worse mistake you could make is to let another human write your essay for you. Instead of preoccupying yourself with whether or not colleges are using AI detection software (most are not), spend your time focused on how best to express yourself authentically. Rick Clark is the executive director of strategic student success at Georgia Institute of Technology, one of the first institutions to clearly outline their AI policy for applicants. He says, “Much of a college application is devoted to lines, boxes, and numbers. Essays and supplements are the one place to establish connection, personality, and distinction. AI, in its current state, is terrible at all three.” He adds, “My hope is that students will use ChatGPT or other tools for brainstorming and to get started, but then move quickly into crafting an essay that will provide insight and value.”

Don’t Overdo It

Michael Stefanowicz, vice president for enrollment management at Landmark College says, “You can only cover so much detail about yourself in an admission essay, and a lot of students feel pressure to tell their life story or choose their most defining experience to date as an essay topic. Admission professionals know that you’re sharing just one part of your lived experience in the essay.” He adds, “Some of the favorite essays I’ve read have been episodic, reflecting on the way you’ve found meaning in a seemingly ordinary experience, advice you’ve lived out, a mistake you’ve learned from, or a special tradition in your life.” Gary Ross, vice president for admission and financial aid at Colgate University adds, “More than a few applicants each year craft essays that talk about the frustration and struggles they have experienced in identifying a topic for their college application essay. Presenting your college application essay as a smorgasbord of topics that ultimately landed on the cutting room floor does not give us much insight into an applicant.”

Don’t Believe In Magic

Jason Nevinger, senior director of admission at the University of Rochester warns, “Be skeptical of anyone or any company telling you, ‘This is the essay that got me into _____.’ There is no magic topic, approach, sentence structure, or prose that got any student into any institution ever.” Social media is littered with advertisements promising strategic essay help. Don’t waste your time, energy, or money trying to emulate a certain style, topic, or tone. Liz Cheron is chief executive officer for the Coalition for College and former assistant vice president of enrollment & dean of admissions at Northeastern University. She agrees with Nevinger, saying “Don't put pressure on yourself to find the perfect, slam dunk topic. The vast majority of college essays do exactly what they're supposed to do–they are well-written and tell the admission officer more about the student in that student's voice–and that can take many different forms.”

Don’t Over Recycle

Beatrice Atkinson-Myers, associate director of global recruitment at the University of California at Santa Cruz tells students, “Do not use the same response for each university; research and craft your essay to match the program at the university you are interested in studying. Don't waste time telling me things I can read elsewhere in your application. Use your essay to give the admissions officer insights into your motivations, interests, and thinking. Don't make your essay the kitchen sink, focus on one or two examples which demonstrate your depth and creativity.” Her UC colleague, Jim Rawlins, associate vice chancellor of enrollment management at the University of California at San Diego agrees, saying “Answer the question. Not doing so is the surest way we can tell you are simply giving us a snippet of something you actually wrote for a different purpose.”

Don’t Overedit

Emily Roper-Doten, vice president for undergraduate admissions and financial assistance at Clark University warns against “Too many editors!” She says, “Pick a couple of trusted folks to be your sounding board when considering topics and as readers once you have drafts. You don’t want too many voices in your essay to drown you out!” Scripps’ Romero agrees, suggesting, “Ask a good friend, someone you trust and knows you well, to read your essays.” She adds, “The goal is for the admission committee to get to know a little about you and who better to help you create that framework, than a good friend. This may not work for all students because of content but helps them understand it’s important to be themselves.” Whitney Soule, vice provost and dean of admissions at The University of Pennsylvania adds, “Avoid well-meaning editorial interference that might seem to polish your writing but actually takes your own personal ‘shine’ right out of the message.” She says, “As readers, we connect to applicants through their genuine tone and style. Considering editorial advice for flow and message is OK but hold on to the 'you' for what you want to say and how you want to say it.”

Don’t Get Showy

Palmer Muntz, senior regional admissions counselor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks cautions applicants, “Don’t be fancier than you are. You don’t need to put on airs.” He adds, “Yes, proofread your work for grammar and spelling, but be natural. Craft something you’d want to read yourself, which probably means keeping your paragraphs short, using familiar words, and writing in an active voice.” Connecticut College’s Strickler agrees, warning, “Don't try to be someone you are not. If you are not funny, don't try to write a funny essay. If you are not an intellectual, trying to write an intellectual essay is a bad idea.”

Anthony Jones, the vice president of enrollment management at Loyola University New Orleans offers a unique metaphor for thinking about the essay. He says, “In the new world of the hyper-fast college admission process, it's become easy to overlook the essential meaning of the college application. It's meant to reveal Y...O...U, the real you, not some phony digital avatar. Think of the essay as the essence of that voice but in analog. Like the completeness and authenticity captured in a vinyl record, the few lines you're given to explain your view should be a slow walk through unrestrained expression chock full of unapologetic nuances, crevices of emotion, and exactness about how you feel in the moment. Then, and only then, can you give the admissions officer an experience that makes them want to tune in and listen for more.”

Don’t Be A Downer

James Nondorf, vice president and dean of admissions and financial aid at The University of Chicago says, “Don’t be negative about other people, be appreciative of those who have supported you, and be excited about who you are and what you will bring to our campus!” He adds, “While admissions offices want smart students for our classrooms, we also want kind-hearted, caring, and joyous students who will add to our campus communities too.”

Don’t Pattern Match

Alan Ramirez is the dean of admission and financial aid at Sewanee, The University of the South. He explains, “A big concern I have is when students find themselves comparing their writing to other students or past applicants and transform their writing to be more like those individuals as a way to better their chances of offering a more-compelling essay.” He emphasizes that the result is that the “essay is no longer authentic nor the best representation of themselves and the whole point of the essay is lost. Their distinctive voice and viewpoint contribute to the range of voices in the incoming class, enhancing the diversity of perspectives we aim to achieve.” Ramirez simple tells students, “Be yourself, that’s what we want to see, plus there's no one else who can do it better than you!”

Don’t Feel Tied To A Topic

Jessica Ricker is the vice president for enrollment and dean of admissions and financial aid at Skidmore College. She says, “Sometimes students feel they must tell a story of grief or hardship, and then end up reliving that during the essay-writing process in ways that are emotionally detrimental. I encourage students to choose a topic they can reflect upon positively but recommend that if they choose a more challenging experience to write about, they avoid belaboring the details and instead focus on the outcome of that journey.” She adds, "They simply need to name it, frame its impact, and then help us as the reader understand how it has shaped their lens on life and their approach moving forward.”

Landmark College’s Stefanowicz adds, “A lot of students worry about how personal to get in sharing a part of their identity like your race or heritage (recalling last year’s Supreme Court case about race-conscious admissions), a learning difference or other disability, your religious values, LGBTQ identity…the list goes on.” He emphasizes, “This is always your choice, and your essay doesn’t have to be about a defining identity. But I encourage you to be fully yourself as you present yourself to colleges—because the college admission process is about finding a school where your whole self is welcome and you find a setting to flourish!”

Don’t Be Redundant

Hillen Grason Jr., dean of admission at Franklin & Marshall College, advises, “Don't repeat academic or co-curricular information that is easily identifiable within other parts of your application unless the topic is a core tenant of you as an individual.” He adds, “Use your essay, and other parts of your application, wisely. Your essay is the best way to convey who your authentic self is to the schools you apply. If you navigated a situation that led to a dip in your grades or co-curricular involvement, leverage the ‘additional information’ section of the application.

Thomas Marr is a regional manager of admissions for the Americas at The University of St Andrews in Scotland and points out that “Not all international schools use the main college essay as part of their assessment when reviewing student applications.” He says, “At the University of St Andrews, we focus on the supplemental essay and students should avoid the mistake of making the supplemental a repeat of their other essay. The supplemental (called the Personal Statement if using the UCAS application process) is to show the extent of their passion and enthusiasm for the subject/s to which they are applying and we expect about 75% of the content to cover this. They can use the remaining space to mention their interests outside of the classroom. Some students confuse passion for the school with passion for their subject; do not fall into that trap.”

A Few Final Don’ts

Don’t delay. Every college applicant I have ever worked with has wished they had started earlier. You can best avoid the pitfalls above if you give yourself the time and space to write a thoughtful essay and welcome feedback openly but cautiously. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to be perfect . Do your best, share your voice, and stay true to who you are.

Corporations exist to make profits. One way of increasing profits is by reducing operating costs. Corporations in America have focused on reducing costs by way of offshore outsourcing. Offshore outsourcing involves hiring of companies and individuals outside America to complete tasks set by American corporations with the aim of cutting down on such costs like hourly wages, paid leave and holiday allowances.

Offshore outsourcing has proved to be an effective way of cutting down on operating costs. However, offshore outsourcing has attracted proponents and opponents in equal measure. This essay seeks to explain the concept of offshore sourcing, reasons advanced to oppose offshore outsourcing and reasons for offshore outsourcing. A personal opinion will complete this essay.

Offshore outsourcing refers to the process of hiring companies or employees to execute a company’s roles overseas (Wise Geek). For instance, a manufacturing company based in the United States of America may use employees outside America to handle issues relating to customer relations and technical assistance.

Data entry is the most popular job outsourced overseas. The internet plays a critical role in the whole process of offshore outsourcing because it allows companies to hire freelance individuals all over the world (Wise Geek). Such overseas companies and individuals charge lower rates than employees in the mother country of outsourcing company do.

There are two broad categories of offshore outsourcing. The first category, Information Technology Outsourcing (ITO) refers to outsourcing of a corporation’s information technology related jobs like software development, ecommerce, networking, as well as web development and hosting (Rose India Technologies PVT. Ltd).

The second category, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), involves outsourcing of services related to customer services, financial accounting practices, logistics, assets management, security as well as procurement (Rose India Technologies PVT. Ltd). Other sectors like human resources, insurance, manufacturing are emerging as popular fields of offshore outsourcing. There are various reasons advanced for offshore outsourcing.

Corporations opt for offshore outsourcing because it is cheaper. Most developing countries have high unemployment rates among skilled labor force. Such individuals work for overseas company and charge lower rates than citizens in the parent company’ country (Outsourcing Offshore).

In addition, such outsourced employees do not require such benefits like holidays, paid leave, travel allowances among others. This saves cost for an outsourcing corporation. In 2003, the average cost of Indian and Chinese software developers was over ten times cheaper than the average wage of American software developers (Outsourcing Offshore).

Corporations incur huge costs related to employees who work in a country where a corporation operates. Such costs include tedious paper work relating to employees, reporting to government as well as paying for statutory and retirement benefits of such employees. It is cheaper when corporations hire overseas firms to handle issues relating to employee benefits (Outsourcing Offshore). On the same issue of cost, corporations that opt for offshore outsourcing find it easy to downsize the number of employees and streamline operations.

Offshore outsourcing provides flexible labor force. Such employees usually work for long hours as well as off-hours. Employees working in the home country take weekends off and that is when offshore outsourcing fits in to compliment for lost hours resulting from such offs. As such, labor force is available at any given time and as required (Outsourcing Offshore).

Smaller companies benefit from offshore outsourcing especially when they need to hire an employee when a new task comes up. In the home country, existing labor practices like advertising for a vacancy, interviews and signing of contracts must guide the process of hiring in-house staff.

Offshore outsourcing is quick and avails an employee on time (Anderson). Outsourcing enables corporations tap into qualified individuals within the shortest time possible. This arises from the fact that outsourcing companies are experts in the field of hiring and have ideas on how to recruit immediately. As much as corporations try to do in-house training, they usually lack required expertise (Anderson).

Corporations that engage outsourcing companies hire employees on short-term contracts regardless of the level of expertise. Some levels of expertise in the home country require long-term hiring for such individuals. As such, hiring such employees on short-term costs a corporation extra money (Outsourcing Offshore).

Corporations spread risk through offshore outsourcing. In events where employees go on strike, operations in a hiring company remain on course since employees working outside a country continue working normally. In addition, reputational issues affecting a corporation at home rarely get to overseas employees (Anderson).

Offshore outsourcing enables corporations focus on their core competencies and thus enhances competitive advantage for such corporations. For instance, a financial institution may decide to focus on deposits and credits and outsource issues relating to procurement and customer relations from an overseas firm (Anderson). Offshore outsourcing has its demerits too.

Unforeseen political crisis in foreign countries can lead to unprecedented disruptions to a corporation’s operations. In such times, government of the day may ban the activities of all foreign corporations and that would include those outsourced in such a country. It has happened in Cuba and South Africa and can happen in any foreign country (Outsourcing Offshore). This leads to financial losses to a corporation.

Foreign workers usually suffer verbal abuse through customers who exhibit racist tendencies. This happens especially where a corporation hires call center services from a foreign country and such employees communicate in accents that customers find offending (Outsourcing Offshore).

An outsourced company may decide to direct all foreign employees to a new entrant to the market requiring the same type of employees. This leaves a corporation in a difficult situation since operations in foreign countries discontinue without notice (Anderson). In addition, services and products in foreign countries may suffer boycott especially if a hiring corporation laid down workers to hire outside firms.

It is risky for a corporation to outsource since the process involves sharing of critical information of a corporation with a third party (Outsourcing Offshore). In addition, a hiring corporation finds it difficult to enforce contracts and issues such a breach of contracts in foreign countries (Outsourcing Offshore).

There are various advantages as well as disadvantages accruing from offshore outsourcing. The advantages to corporations are way above the number of disadvantages. Advantages range from drop in cost of doing business, flexibility of workforce, spreading of risks as well as easy hiring of employees.

With this in mind, the United States government should regulate offshore outsourcing and seek to work with foreign countries to come up with enforceable regulations pertaining to offshore outsourcing. With regulations in place, corporations will maximize profits and this will grant the government more revenues.

British Academics Despair as ChatGPT-Written Essays Swamp Grading Season

‘It’s not a machine for cheating; it’s a machine for producing crap,’ says one professor infuriated by the rise of bland essays.

The increased prevalence of students using ChatGPT to write essays should prompt a rethink about whether current policies encouraging “ethical” use of artificial intelligence (AI) are working, scholars have argued.

With marking season in full flow, lecturers have taken to social media in large numbers to complain about AI-generated content found in submitted work.

Telltale signs of ChatGPT use, according to academics, include little-used words such as “delve” and “multifaceted,” summarizing key themes using bullet points and a jarring conversational style using terms such as, “Let’s explore this theme.”

In a more obvious giveaway, one professor said an advertisement for an AI essay company was  buried in a paper’s introduction ; another academic noted how a student had  forgotten to remove a chatbot statement  that the content was AI-generated.

“I had no idea how many would resort to it,” admitted  one U.K. law professor .

Des Fitzgerald, professor of medical humanities and social sciences at  University College Cork , told  Times Higher Education  that student use of AI had “gone totally mainstream” this year.

“Across a batch of essays, you do start to notice the tics of ChatGPT essays, which is partly about repetition of certain words or phrases, but is also just a kind of aura of machinic blandness that’s hard to describe to someone who hasn’t encountered it—an essay with no edges, that does nothing technically wrong or bad, but not much right or good, either,” said Professor Fitzgerald.

Since  ChatGPT’s emergence in late 2022 , some universities have adopted policies to allow the use of AI as long as it is acknowledged, while others have begun using AI content detectors, although  opinion is divided on their effectiveness .

According to the  latest Student Academic Experience Survey , for which Advance HE and the Higher Education Policy Institute polled around 10,000 U.K. undergraduates, 61 percent use AI at least a little each month, “in a way allowed by their institution,” while 31 percent do so every week.

Professor Fitzgerald said that although some colleagues “think we just need to live with this, even that we have a duty to teach students to use it well,” he was “totally against” the use of AI tools for essays.

“ChatGPT is completely antithetical to everything I think I’m doing as a teacher—working with students to engage with texts, thinking through ideas, learning to clarify and express complex thoughts, taking some risks with those thoughts, locating some kind of distinctive inner voice. ChatGPT is total poison for all of this, and we need to simply ban it,” he said.

Steve Fuller, professor of sociology at the  University of Warwick , agreed that AI use had “become more noticeable” this year despite his students signing contracts saying they would not use it to write essays.

He said he was not opposed to students using it “as long as what they produce sounds smart and on point, and the marker can’t recognize it as simply having been lifted from another source wholesale.”

Those who leaned heavily on the technology should expect a relatively low mark, even though they might pass, said Professor Fuller.

“Students routinely commit errors of fact, reasoning and grammar [without ChatGPT], yet if their text touches enough bases with the assignment, they’re likely to get somewhere in the low- to mid-60s. ChatGPT does a credible job at simulating such mediocrity, and that’s good enough for many of its student users,” he said.

Having to mark such mediocre essays partly generated by AI is, however, a growing complaint among academics. Posting on X,  Lancaster University  economist  Renaud Foucart  said marking AI-generated essays “takes much more time to assess [because] I need to concentrate much more to cut through the amount of seemingly logical statements that are actually full of emptiness.”

“My biggest issue [with AI] is less the moral issue about cheating but more what ChatGPT offers students,” Professor Fitzgerald added. “All it is capable of is [writing] bad essays made up of non-ideas and empty sentences. It’s not a machine for cheating; it’s a machine for producing crap.”

Ben Stiller: Why I Can’t Stay Silent About the Suffering in Israel and Gaza

W hat a time we are all living through. Like so many people, I have been watching the awful events happening in the Middle East over the last year and trying to determine how to react. I have been seeing the brazen antisemitic incidents in my own city and feeling a mix of anger, fear, and astonishment that we are at this place in our country. Saying nothing at this point feels like I am betraying my own conscience. But what do you say? How does one express the complicated and very real feelings in this scary world of social media, where it seems any sentiment opens you to online vitriol from one side or another? The issues we are dealing with are so nuanced and complicated that short statements cannot in any way express fully what I want to say from my heart. As a public advocate for refugees, I’ve been struggling to reconcile my silence with that work. Please bear with me as I explain. And to be clear, what I say here is my personal view, not that of any organization–it’s just how I feel.

I was given the opportunity in 2016 to work with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights, and building a better future for people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. The agency was created to help the millions who fled the Second World War and leads international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people, ensuring that everyone has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge from violence, persecution, or war at home.

With UNHCR I have visited refugees and those impacted by war and violence in Lebanon, Guatemala, Jordan, Poland, and Ukraine. I visited Lebanon just before the eighth anniversary of the Syrian conflict and met refugee families struggling to survive, among the millions living on the razor’s edge. I went to Kyiv after the full-scale Russian invasion and talked to people whose lives have been upended by this senseless war. I’ve advocated for refugees at the UN and in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, imploring the U.S. government not to look away from this global humanitarian crisis. I say this not to toot my own horn, but to explain that for me, if I am to speak out about these issues in these places, I can’t ignore the crisis that is front and center in the world right now.

I am Jewish. I’m also half Irish. My father’s mother came to the United States as a refugee from Poland. His father’s grandfather came from Ukraine, where over 100,000 Jewish people lost their lives in the ethnic pogroms that preceded the great horror of the Holocaust by just two decades. My mother’s grandparents came from Ireland seeking a better life. They arrived in New York with a surplus of hope and not much else.

My dad served in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II. He met my mom and they got married–he was Jewish, she was Catholic. At the time that was an issue. They dealt with judgment from both sides of their families and the outside world. They turned that tension into humor and based their stand-up comedy act on their ethnic differences, which brought them together – and brought them success.

My mom converted to Judaism when they married. Ours was not a religious household, but we learned the traditions of inclusion and tolerance. After my Bar Mitzvah, I didn’t really go back to synagogue too often. But I always felt connected to my heritage, both Irish and Jewish, and valued the bonds I saw formed by both sides of my family. Eventually they came together through my parents’ love for each other. It was a palpable and beautiful thing I experienced as a child. As a kid growing up surrounded by that love, in New York City in the ‘70s, I never really experienced antisemitism. Where we find ourselves now is a place I never thought I would be.

Like so many Jews I grieve for those who suffered in the barbaric Hamas attack on October 7 and for those who have suffered as a result of those atrocities . My heart aches for the families who lost loved ones to this heinous act of terrorism and for those anxiously waiting these long months for the return of the hostages still in captivity. It’s a nightmare. I also grieve for the innocent people in Gaza who have lost their lives in this conflict and those suffering through that awful reality now.

I detest war, but what Hamas did was unconscionable and reprehensible. The hostages have to be freed. Terrorism must be named and fought by all people of conscience on the planet. There is no excuse for it under any circumstances.  

I stand with the Israeli people and their right to live in peace and safety. At the same time, I don’t agree with all of the Israeli government’s choices on how they are conducting the war. I want the violence to end, and the innocent Palestinian people affected by the humanitarian crisis that has resulted to receive the lifesaving aid they need. And I know that many in Israel share this sentiment.

I believe, as many people in Israel and around the world do, in the need for a two-state solution, one that ensures that the Israeli people can live in peace and safety alongside a homeland for the Palestinian people that provides them the same benefits.

I also see a troubling conflation in criticism of the actions of the Israeli government with denunciations of all Israelis and Jewish people. And as a result, we are seeing an undeniable rise in global antisemitism. I am seeing it myself, on the streets of the city I grew up in. It isn’t right and must be denounced.

Antisemitism must be condemned whenever it happens and wherever it exists. As should Islamophobia and bigotry of all kinds. There is a frightening amnesia for history in the air. We must remind ourselves that we can only manifest a more hopeful, just, and peaceful future by learning from the past.

Obviously I am no politician or diplomat. I have no solutions for these world conflicts and claim to offer none. I think I, like so many people, am struggling with how to process this all. But as an advocate for displaced people, I do believe this war must end. As I write this, there are about 120 million people all over the world who have been displaced by conflicts. In the Middle East, in Ukraine, Sudan, and many other countries. They all deserve to live in safety and peace. The human suffering must end. We must demand this of our leaders. Peace is the only path.

I’m an Appellate Lawyer in Manhattan. If Trump Appeals His Conviction, He Faces Long Odds.

Donald Trump has vowed to appeal his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records. Some on the right have argued that the trial was a target-rich environment for an appeal. Others have said that the U.S. Supreme Court should step in and provide relief to Mr. Trump.

Nevertheless, the process will begin in New York, where state law gives Mr. Trump — and any other individual with a criminal conviction — an absolute right to an appeal before an intermediate appellate court known as the Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department.

As a prosecutor and a defense attorney for decades, I have argued hundreds of cases at this court. I’ve looked closely at the Trump case. The burning question now is: Could his conviction be reversed on appeal? My answer is: The chances of that are not good.

Mr. Trump’s legal team can approach his appeal on several fronts, but only one, concerning the legal theory behind the falsifying business records charge, is likely to hold out anything more than the slimmest of hopes for the former president.

In recent years, the Appellate Division, First Department, has reversed appeals from criminal convictions in only about 4 to 6 percent of cases. These long odds should come as no surprise. While the Constitution guarantees criminal defendants a fair trial, it does not guarantee them a perfect one.

To warrant reversal of a jury’s verdict on account of an error, the appellate court must find that an error of some kind led directly to the conviction. A technical error that does not rise to that level is called a harmless error and will not cause a reversal of a conviction.
