Finding and Reading Journal Articles

What are Databases for?
Decoding databases: what should you look for.
- Databases We Recommend For You
- Sources in the Disciplines
- Reading in the Disciplines
Research projects here at Harvard will often require you to look close up at a body of inquiry produced by scholars in a particular academic field. We call these subject databases -- or by the shorthand "library databases."
Essentially, any library database is a collection of information that's been brought together, described and codified in some way, and then made searchable by a user like you.
Decisions are deliberately made about what to include and exclude (you're never searching "everything") but you can always be sure there's some principle of similarity among the information a database contains.
Whatever your concentration turns out to be, you can expect to use at least one subject database that's considered the disciplinary gold standard : a reliable, (relatively) comprehensive, and accurate record of the books that scholars are publishing, and the ideas they're debating and discussing in important and influential journals.
Librarians and course instructors will always know the premier research database in a field, so ask them for recommendations when you're not sure.
Subject databases function like lenses: they can change what you see in research and how you see it -- and they offer you easy and efficient ways to bring your questions into sharper focus.
Databases can have radically different interfaces or radical differences in what they cover. More and more, however, research databases, follow certain design conventions. A lot of searching is about pattern recognition.
Expect to see features like these:
Two types of search screens: basic and advanced.
- Advanced search screens are typically a set of stacked search boxes, joined by a default AND. They're great when you already know the parameters of a search and want to optimize your result lists from the start.
TWO TYPES OF SEARCH LANGUAGE: KEYWORDS AND SUBJECTS
- Keywords are the concepts you think up to describe your topic or information need.
- Subject terms, by contrast, come from a standardized vocabulary list and are chosen by catalogers or database creators to describe the intellectual content or emphasis of an item in precise and commonly understood ways.
Subject terms add value to a search by helping you find additional items that are related in emphasis, that cover similar content, or that have the same purpose.
Subject terms are what ensure that you get to all the relevant information on a given topic, regardless of the keywords with which you start. You might see them called descriptors in certain databases. In science literature, and in a database like PubMed, you'll encounter a version of them called MESH (medical subject headings).
Whatever the nomenclature, their usefulness is in helping you get around the fact that we have multiple words for things, that language is slippery and that without someway to get around this reality, we might miss important research if their words and ours don't match.
SEARCH CONVENTIONS TO HELP YOU STRUCTURE AND DEFINE YOUR SEARCHES
OPTIONS TO FILTER, MODIFY, REFINE, AND RE-SORT RESULTS
Always ask yourself; "Why am i seeing these results this way?" and then, "Can i see them other ways?"
Limiting to English (or another language ), by resource type , to peer reviewed/academic journals, or to a range of dates are pretty standard ways of customizing your search results. Sometimes, there are really robust filters (see image, right).
Most databases will rank results algorithmically by relevance, as Google does.
If you prefer to see the results in chronological order, you should be able to resort your results by earliest date or have them display in reverse chronological order . You can also choose to rank by relevance if that's not the default.
LINKS TO INFORMATION ABOUT ONLINE (OR PRINT) AVAILABILITY
Many journal databases now provide complete full-text of the materials they contain. But just as many offer full-text more selectively.
Clicking on it will initiate a search through Harvard's other library databases in search of full-text.
If full-text isn't available, the software will prompt you to put in a Scan and Deliver request. That's a free service. Set up your profile, if you're not in the system yet, and then follow the directions that follow.
We'll get you a PDF of the article quickly, sometimes within a few hours of the request, and usually, no more than 4 days after you ask us for it. We'll notify you that it's ready by email.
LINKS TO RELATED RESOURCES
Good researchers develop the habit of looking around a page, for embedded clues to what else, where else, and how else to push your searching forward. Bibliographies and footnotes are the most obvious ways you can do so.
But screen real estate is super important and these days, you're smart to focus not just on what's directly in front of you on the computer screen, but also on what's hiding in plain sight -- off to one side.
Lots of subject databases serve up related research automatically -- algorithmically-generated suggestion lists. They can be hit or miss or dead on -- it all depends on the algorithm, and what you yourself are really after.
Some even offer you options to browse what other users also read after they landed on the article you've found. That's like the suggestive sell made famous by Amazon: it's designed to add some serendipity to the discovery process and sometimes, you might find something useful that way.
At times, databases will also point you toward foundational research related to a topic, or even primary sources (e.g., newspaper articles that might .

JSTOR archival journal collections are where scholars go to link past and present , forge new connections, and build on great ideas.
Archival Journals
The collections feature the full-text articles of more than 2,800 academic journals across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Journals span continents and languages, with titles from 1,200 publishers from 57 countries. Collections include multi-discipline , discipline-specific , and region-based packages .
Many JSTOR collections are multidisciplinary and comprised of several core subjects, including language and literature, history, economics, and political science. Discipline-specific collections are also available to support focused educational programs, and range from health and science collections to music, Jewish studies, and Iberoamérica.
Key benefits
A trusted source: JSTOR is a starting point for researchers and one of the most trusted, highly-used platforms. It is why users conducted 262 million searches, and viewed and downloaded more than 230 million journal articles 2019 alone.
Quality: JSTOR collections are curated, and all journals must meet specific criteria and undergo a review process in order to join JSTOR. This includes journal rankings, in depth examination of research and citation data, and more.
Coverage: All journals include the full archival run. This means all issues, from volume 1, issue 1, are provided for every journal up to the moving wall, including all previous and related titles. As a result, many journals on JSTOR have greater coverage than what is available via other providers’ databases.
Value: As a mission-based not-for-profit organization, we are committed to providing affordable fees that fit many different communities and institution types. Each year, hundreds of thousands of articles are added to the archival journal collections as the moving wall for each journal advances, at no additional cost.
Consistent access: Titles included in JSTOR archival journal collections will not be withdrawn, so you can be assured that journal content will always be available in JSTOR. Conversely, the titles available in other databases can change from year to year.
Preservation: We understand that future accessibility to online scholarship is essential. Digital files for the entire archive are preserved using the approach and infrastructure developed by Portico.

Human subjects research design.

- Definition/Introduction
Human subjects research is a heavily regulated type of research, hence this paper will start with two critical definitions. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Code of Federal Regulations, 45 CFR 46, provides the following definitions: [1] “A living individual about whom an investigator (whether professional or student) conducting research:
- Obtains information or biospecimens through intervention or interaction with the individual, and uses, studies, or analyzes the information or biospecimens; or
- Obtains, uses, studies, analyzes, or generates identifiable private information or identifiable biospecimens."
Research means “a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge.” Human subjects research is at the intersection of these two federal definitions and must obtain Institutional Review Board approval before starting, regardless of the type of design involved. The topic of a human research study varies and can include building a theory or hypothesis, determining patient satisfaction, or testing a medication, tool, device, process, or health intervention, to name a few.
Research studies are classified into a qualitative study, a quantitative study, or a combination of both, called a mixed-methods study. [2] [3] Qualitative studies gather non-numerical data, whereas quantitative research involves collecting numerical data. Other classifications of research studies exist depending on the purpose and utility of the study, [4] examples include health systems research and operational research. [5] This review will be limited to the most common quantitative and qualitative research designs.
Quantitative Research
A research study can be done to describe variables and/or to determine the association of test and outcome variables regarding the research topic. [1] Quantitative research studies also subdivide into either interventional studies or non-interventional (observational) studies. For interventional research studies, the researcher performs some intervention or manipulation of one or more groups in the research study and compares the outcomes to the other groups to help analyze the variables of interest. It may or may not be randomized, although a randomized controlled trial is considered a gold standard, as randomization of patients into the treatment groups reduce bias. Interventional studies apply to medical drugs, biologics, and devices.
For observational or non-interventional research studies, the investigator gathers data for identified variables of interest without any intervention or outside influence by the investigator on the groups under study. Cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control are the common types. [2]
A cohort study involves longitudinally following a group or groups of population with certain known exposures to determine who develops certain diseases or illnesses. This type of study could establish causal relationships between exposure and outcomes such as illness. [2] A cross-sectional study deals with a population at a given point in time as opposed to longitudinally and could provide information such as prevalence. Case-control studies compare populations with and without the exposure to determine if an illness will develop and at what rate in either group. A classic example is comparing smokers and non-smokers to determine which group develops lung cancer.
Qualitative Research
Qualitative research aims to answer the more open-ended questions that arise during the research process. Rather than trying to answer quantitative ‘how much’ or ‘how many’-type questions, qualitative research seeks to answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions. [3] Qualitative research often aims to understand and explain why or how a phenomenon is the way it is in order to provide insights and explanations of real-life problems and experiences. [4] Qualitative research can be used alone, in conjunction with quantitative research in mixed methods research, or as a way to explain the findings of a quantitative study because a quantitative study might show that there is a correlation between two things, but a qualitative study could then tell why that correlation exists, and not just that it does indeed exist.
There are many approaches used for qualitative research. Some of the most common are ethnography, grounded theory, phenomenology, and narrative research. [3] Ethnography is an approach that involves the researcher to be immersed in their participant’s environment, and through this immersion, collect insight into the actions, behaviors, and events that could aid them in their research. [4] Grounded theory is an approach where the researcher observes the population of interest in order to develop a theory that explains the topic of interest. [3] Phenomenology as an approach emphasizes the importance of the ‘lived experience’ for explaining phenomena. [4] Grounded theory and phenomenology are similar, but grounded theory focuses on observation as a whole to create a theory, whereas phenomenology focuses on the perspective of participants themselves to explain why or how something happens. Lastly, narrative research showcases one of qualitative research’s strengths, the ability to tell a story. When research includes the perspective of the individuals involved, it can create robust theory-building because it takes into account the real-life implications and impacts of phenomena in a way that quantitative research often lacks. Data for qualitative research is collected in many ways, including interviews, focus groups, case studies, and medical record reviews.
Mixed Methods Research
In some cases, a combination of both qualitative and quantitative methods, or what is called a mixed-methods research is performed. Mixed methods approaches that combine qualitative and quantitative research can allow for hypothesis generation and hypothesis testing to help try to answer questions in a more well-rounded way. This is usually done to get the benefits of both numerical and non-numerical information to answer the research questions on hand. For example, a cross-sectional study found that young teens are vaping at a high rate. For further elucidation of the reasons why these teens vape, a subsequent focus group could be performed.
- Issues of Concern
One of the primary concerns in doing research is the identification and formulation of the research problem (i.e., research question). [5] The research problem should be ethical, researchable, significant, and feasible. In medicine, the goal of the research is not only to add relevant findings to the scientific body of knowledge but also to provide a beneficial, useful contribution to stakeholders, particularly the patients.
The second area of concern for research studies is selecting the correct research study to perform. Many times descriptive and qualitative research must first take place to produce a robust, significant, and feasible research hypothesis for later quantitative research methods. [6] Additionally, different research study types have different levels of strength and risk of bias as delineated in the hierarchy of research study designs. [7]
- Clinical Significance
The significance of research studies and its findings collectively support both clinical and public health needs. The discovery of new medicines and new treatment modalities for specific diseases is possible using randomized clinical (control) trials, more commonly termed as RCTs. [8] Public health, both as medical and social science, can choose from a wide range of qualitative studies, descriptive, analytic, community-based trials [9] , and operations researches, among others, to explore and describe the characteristics of certain groups of populations and its associations to the disease process or a particular health intervention, yielding findings that will inform policymakers and stakeholders.
In clinical settings, case studies and case series can be used by clinicians, surgeons, and other clinical specialists to scientifically document and describe the occurrence of rare diseases. [10] Researchers can perform studies to determine the association of exposure variables or risk factors in rare diseases or cohort studies to investigate rare exposure variables present in the study population. Meanwhile, studies such as meta-analysis and systematic review are good choices for researchers who want to summarize the results of previous research findings, in quantitative and qualitative means, respectively. [11] [12] Mixed methods are employed to combine and exhaust the utility of the research type or study design combinations (e.g., quantitative and qualitative studies). [13]
Research studies can be both simple and complex; thus, they can be performed in several ways, which must be consistently systematic and scientific. The acquisition of new research findings will eventually find utility in the application of evidence-based medicine (EBM). [14] Research studies must be carried out within the walls of medical ethics, free of bias, and primarily geared towards the welfare of our patients rather than just merely the expedition of science. Types of Single Subject Research Design
Types of SSRDs to look for as you skim abstracts:
- reversal design
- withdrawal design
- ABAB design
- A-B-A-B design
- A-B-C design
- A-B-A design
- multiple baseline
- alternating treatments design
- multi-element design

- single case design
- single subject design
- single case series
Behavior analysts recognize the advantages of single-subject design for establishing intervention efficacy. Much of the research performed by behavior analysts will use SSRD methods.
When you need to find SSRD articles, there are two methods you can use:
- Click on a title from the list of ABA Journal Titles .
- Scroll down on the resulting page to the View Online section.
- Choose a link which includes the date range you're interested in.
- Click on a link to an issue (date) you want to explore.
- From the resulting Table of Contents, explore titles of interest, reading the abstract carefully for signs that the research was carried out using a SSRD. (To help, look for the box on this page with a list of SSRD types.)

First , go to APA PsycInfo.
Second , copy and paste this set of terms describing different types of SSRDs into an APA PsycInfo search box, and choose "Abstract" in the drop-down menu.
Third , copy and paste this list of ABA journals into another search box in APA PsycInfo, and choose "SO Publication Name" in the drop-down menu.
Fourth , type in some keywords in another APA PsycInfo search box (or two) describing what you're researching. Use OR and add synonyms or related words for the best results.
Hit SEARCH, and see what kind of results you get!
Here's an example of a search for SSRDs in ABA journals on the topic of fitness:
Note that the long list of terms in the top two boxes gets cut off in the screenshot - - but they're all there!
The reason this works:
- To find SSRD articles, we can't just search on the phrase "single subject research" because many studies which use SSRD do not include that phrase anywhere in the text of the article; instead such articles typically specify in the abstract (and "Methods" section) what type of SSRD method was used (ex. withdrawal design, multiple baseline, or ABA design). That's why we string together all the possible descriptions of SSRD types with the word OR in between -- it enables us to search for any sort of SSRD, regardless of how it's described. Choosing "Abstract" in the drop-down menu ensures that we're focusing on these terms being used in the abstract field (not just popping up in discussion in the full-text).
- To search specifically for studies carried out in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis, we enter in the titles of the ABA journals, strung together, with OR in between. The quotation marks ensure each title is searched as a phrase. Choosing "SO Publication Name" in the drop-down menu ensures that results will be from articles published in those journals (not just references to those journals).
- To limit the search to a topic we're interested in, we type in some keywords in another search box. The more synonyms you can think of, the better; that ensures you'll have a decent pool of records to look through, including authors who may have described your topic differently.
Search ideas:
To limit your search to just the top ABA journals, you can use this shorter list in place of the long one above:
"Behavior Analysis in Practice" OR "Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis" OR "Journal of Behavioral Education" OR "Journal of Developmental and Physical Disabilities" OR "Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior"
To get more specific, topic-wise, add another search box with another term (or set of terms), like in this example:
To search more broadly and include other psychology studies outside of ABA journals, simply remove the list of journal titles from the search, as shown here:

This article presents a vision of what the digital transformation in education could look like and what some of its benefits and challenges are. It argues that digital technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), could improve the effectiveness and quality of education by personalizing education, by making it more inclusive and equitable, and by improving the cost-efficiency of the sector. A digital transformation of education also comes with risks that must be mitigated.
