MOST IMPROVED

Kimana girls tops with most improved kcse results in kajiado.

Resistance from a few teachers did not deter the new principal from vouching for the desired excellence.

•Kimana Girls High School attained a mean grade of 6.4 in the 2022 KCSE, a remarkable improvement from a mean score of 3.6 in 2021.

•The school had been docked by pregnancies as students could walk in and out of the schools as they wish and the teachers could not do anything.

Kimana Girls Secondary School, Kajiado South sub county.

A girls’ school in Kajiado county pulled a surprise result in the just released KCSE after posting a mean score of 6.4.

Kimana Girls High School attained a mean score of 6.4 in the 2022 KCSE, a remarkable improvement from  3.6 in 2021.

The school had been docked by pregnancies as students could walk in and out of the schools as they wanted with no limitation from teachers.

Two students scored B, 19 had a B-, while 43 scored a C+.

However, the results did not surprise the new head of the school, Catherine Mwaniki, who was transferred there barely 7 months before the examinations.

She was transferred to Kimana Girls from a school in Nandi county to come tackle the situation of indiscipline and pregnancies after an outcry from parents and education officials.

On arrival, Mwaniki discovered what was ailing the school and made recommendations for some teachers to be transferred, as well as introduced new guidelines that teachers saw as “punishment”.

“There was so much resistance from a section of teachers that I recommended their transfer. Thereafter, we moved on with those who saw the need to help these girls to achieve the best marks," Mwaniki said.

Upon her arrival at the school, the Principal said she saw nothing wrong with the students but noted that the rules in the institution were weak.

“Girls could just walk out of the school and come back when they wish. I said that will never happen under my watch. I created more time for studies for my girls and by working closely with my teachers, we have delivered something better,” Mwaniki said.

In spirit of teamwork, Mwaniki said she will work with teachers and students to improve the next results to between a mean score of 7 and 8.

“I have the support of the board of management, parents and teachers and together we can move mountains. My girls in the school are happy that we have broken the ice in achieving better results than the previous years,” she said.

Looking at how other schools performed, Moi Girls Isinya had 10 students who scored A- in the KCSE.

The school achieved a mean grade of 8.09 — an improvement from 7.902 in 2021.

Out of a population of 266 students who sat for the exam, 229 have attained a direct university entry.

At Olkejuado High School, a mean grade of 6.7 was scored.

Three out of 337 students who sat for the examination attained A-, while 14 scored B+.

The school performed best in computer studies with a mean grade of A-.

Oloolaiser High School, which has been leading over the years, scored a mean grade of 8.7 in 2022 KCSE, a remarkable improvement from 7.8 in 2021.

At least 92.2 per cent of its students attained a minimum of C+ required for direct university entry.

Mary Kitum is the former Principal of Kimana Girls Secondary School. Catherine Mwaniki took over from her.

School Profile

History of the School  –

Presentation Parish School is a welcoming and dynamic community that has traditionally provided an exceptional education in a faith filled environment. It was established in 1965, under the direction of Monsignor James Cloherty. The school opened with grades 1 - 4 and was staffed by the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Each successive year an additional grade was added until it was completed as a first through eighth grade school. In August of 1991, a kindergarten program was instituted.  Presentation Parish School from its beginning is centered in our Catholic faith.

The retirement of Sr. Monica Lowry in 1996 marked the hiring of the school’s first lay principal. In 2001, health issues required the Sisters of Charity, BVM to return to their community’s home base in Iowa. Today the school continues to operate with an all-lay staff which numbers twenty-eight, including full and part-time certificated teachers, paraprofessionals, clerical, custodial, and administrative personnel.

Accreditation

Presentation School is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Western Catholic Educators Association . The purpose of the accreditation process is to foster excellence in elementary education by encouraging school improvement through a process of continuing evaluation and to recognize schools that meet an acceptable level of quality in accordance with established criteria.

Instruction  –

As a Catholic school, we are committed to the formation of Christian values as well as academic excellence. The religion curriculum is based on diocesan standards, while California Common Core State Standards form the basis of the academic curriculum. Additionally physical education, art, music, and technology  are offered in all grades.  Our classrooms are well equipped with technology and teachers use a cross-curricular approach infusing technology, the arts, and critical thinking skills. Most importantly, the experiences of faith and service help our students develop a love for God and an appreciation for the value of others.

Our Mission and Values

Mission & Values

What makes Sonoma's Only Independent School Unique?

Our mission.

The Presentation School, an independent school guided by moral values, challenges its students to be active learners reaching their individual potentials with an integrated curriculum and small class size. As a visionary, collaborative community, together we work to prepare students emotionally, academically, socially, and physically to become life-long learners and socially responsible leaders.

The Presentation School is an intentional community devoted to the growth and welfare of young people. We all work towards understanding and embodying the values that form the philosophical foundation for our School: especially the mission’s entreaty to LOVE, LEARN, and LEAD.

We strive to create graduates who have developed a greater sense of themselves and their roles as active community builders. We strive to create kind graduates who embody the values of love, gratitude, respect, service and integrity.

LEARN

We strive to create graduates who are both critical and creative thinkers, strong and effective communicators, and collaborative problem-solvers.

LEAD

We strive to create graduates who are of service to others and their community. We strive to create graduates who communicate respectfully and clearly, who can and will speak up for others, and can clearly explain what they think and why.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Vision Statement

The Presentation School strives to embody each of the values of LOVE, LEARN and LEAD by cultivating a school culture that is welcoming and accessible to families of all backgrounds and authentically reflects the wide range of experiences of our local community. In doing so we commit to exploring, better understanding and acting upon elements that affect our community, including promoting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

As working definitions, we learn from the following words of the Anti-Defamation League :

Diversity: The presence of variety within a group. The population of the United States is made up of people belonging to a diversity of groups characterized by culture, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, ability, etc.

Equity: Everyone getting what they need in order to have access, opportunities and a fair chance to succeed. It recognizes that the same for everyone (equality) doesn’t truly address needs and therefore, specific solutions and remedies, which may be different, are necessary.

Inclusion: An environment and commitment to respect, represent and accept diverse social groups and identities; an environment where all people feel like they belong.

Feeding Flock Team receives 2024 Igniting Change Award from International Pediatric Feeding Disorder Conference

The Feeding Flock Team, formed at the University of North Carolina School of Nursing, has been honored with the 2024 Igniting Change Award at the International Pediatric Feeding Disorder Conference held in April. The Igniting Change Award, presented by Feeding Matters , recognizes exemplary contributions towards the growth and progression of pediatric feeding practices. Comprising Suzanne Thoyre , PhD, RN, FAAN (UNC School of Nursing, Professor), Jinhee Park (Boston College SON PhD graduate), Hayley Estrem (UNC-Wilmington, SON PhD graduate), and Cara McComish (UNC PhD graduate), the Feeding Flock Team embodies a collaborative force dedicated to enhancing education, clinical support, and research initiatives surrounding infant and child feeding challenges.

Feeding Matters, an organization committed to revolutionizing the care system for children with pediatric feeding disorders, lauded the Feeding Flock Team’s pioneering efforts. 8 Tips to Power-Up Your Classroom Presentations

Last month, I attended a Back to School Night for parents, sitting through presentation after presentation by teachers, some with slides that helped make their presentation a delight to listen to, and others . . . well, that's why I'm writing this blog post.

The goal of a classroom presentation is to aid you in effectively conveying information in a way that allows students (or their parents) to remember what you said. Unfortunately, for some, the presentation becomes a crutch, and they begin to rely on the slides to tell their story, rather than to help them tell the story.

I've been creating presentations using software like PowerPoint and KeyNote for 20 years, and I've learned a lot about how to most effectively communicate. Here's what I've found.

1. Use as Many Slides as You Need

It's a common myth that better presentations use fewer slides. This is simply not the case. I once sent an education conference presentation to the organizers so they could preview it in advance of my speaking. They wrote back, concerned that my 45-minute presentation had 116 slides. I looked it over and realized they were right! I revised it and sent a presentation with 135 slides back to them. I finished my talk with 5 minutes to spare -- just enough time to take questions -- and the presentation was a huge success.

The number of slides in your presentation is irrelevant. What matters is how well your slides communicate and how much time you spend talking about each slide. Spending five minutes on five slides will almost always be more engaging to your students than spending five minutes on a single slide, even when the information is exactly the same.

In the movie Amadeus , the Emperor of Austria complains to Mozart that his music has "too many notes." Mozart responds, "There are just as many notes as are required. Neither more nor less." Use as many slides as you need to make your point. No more. No less.

2. Minimize Verbosity

Your slides are there to support what you are saying, not to say it for you. Keep your word count low, and only place one main point on a slide, plus three to five sub-points if absolutely needed. Remember tip #1 above -- don't be afraid to use more slides. They're free! Also, the language in your slides doesn't need to be in complete sentences. Pare the text to as few words as possible, using what's there only to emphasize and reinforce -- not replace -- the words coming out of your mouth.

3. Maximize Visuals

Photos, figures and icons work as visual memory triggers. They help your students remember what it is you're saying. Any time you can add a visual that helps illustrate or reinforce the points you're making in your slides, you should use it. One great way to do this on the cheap is to use public domain or creative commons photos you can find on Flickr or Google .

4. Reduce Noise

Many teachers like to add banners, headers, footers, page numbers and more noise to their slides. Unless the information needs to be on every slide for a vital reason (which is rare), you should remove it. All these redundant elements do is create distractions from the content of your slides. I find this to be especially true of page numbers. Imagine if a movie included a time code at the bottom, constantly reminding you how long you had been watching. All this does is serve to take the viewer out of the moment. Page numbers in slides really don't provide any useful information -- they just remind your students how long they've been watching.

Pursuant to tips #1 and #2, you're not going to win awards by cramming the most content on the fewest slides. Make text and visuals as large as you can. Not only does this make them easier to see and read, but larger images and text make a greater impact to aid memory. There's nothing wrong with filling an entire slide with a photo, and then placing text right on top. You may have to use a transparent background immediately behind the text so that it's clearly readable, but the overall effect is almost always more memorable than just some text beside an image.

6. Highlight What You Are Talking About

While you are presenting, your students may be momentarily distracted taking notes, thinking about what you are saying, glancing out the window, possibly even daydreaming. When they refocus on your slides, though, they need to quickly pick back up where you are, or you risk losing them again.

  • Use contrast or call-outs to clearly show the area of the slide you are talking about.
  • Reveal bullet points or table rows one at a time so that the last one visible is the one you are talking about.
  • Use arrows, circles or other pointers to show what you are referencing in specific parts of an illustration, photo or graph.
  • Animate and reveal parts of illustrations and graphs (where possible) to build your story rather than showing everything at once.
  • Use bold type or different colors to highlight the keywords in any lengthy text.

7. Transition Changes

Humans suffer from an affliction called change blindness -- we have a hard time seeing changes unless there is a clear transition between the states. This is especially a problem in presentations where slides may look very much alike. Most programs include transitions that can be used between slides or on elements in the slides themselves.

My favorite transition is the cross-dissolve -- where the first slide fades down while the next slide fades up -- but different transitions can help illustrate points in your presentation. Are you talking about combustion or the fire of London? Use a flame transition. Talking about photography or Hollywood movies? Use the flashbulb transition. Even "cheesy" transitions help overcome change blindness and aid student memory at the same time.

8. Repeat Yourself Redundantly

It’s OK to repeat the same slide more than once -- especially when using images -- if you are reminding students of an earlier point. Obviously, this is not a license to be monotonous. However, if you want to tie separate ideas together, emphasize a point or splash in a little comic relief, it's perfectly fine to repeat a slide.

Bonus Tip: Make it Funny!

There's little doubt that emotional responses can aid memory. While it can be difficult to apply this power in a classroom slide presentation, humor is easy enough, and adding a bit of levity to your presentations at the right points can work to give students vital memory hooks.

Remember, the point of presentation slides is not to replace you as the teacher, but to help your students understand and remember what you are teaching. Overwhelming them with too much information can be just as harmful as underwhelming them with too little.
