Apple’s iPhone 15 Event Recap: New Phones, New Watches, and USB-C

Published September 12, 2023

Apple’s annual fall product-launch event brought few surprises but still delivered big news: The company unveiled four iPhone 15 models—which trade in Apple’s proprietary Lightning charging port in favor of USB-C—two new Apple Watches, and a fresh AirPods Pro pair that also moves to USB-C. Here’s everything that Apple announced at its Wonderlust event.

iPhone 15 and 15 Plus

A line-up of iPhone 15 smartphones, arranged to display their different colors: black, blue, green, yellow and pink.

The new 6.1-inch iPhone 15 and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus run on Apple’s A16 processor, which allows for faster performance and better multitasking in comparison with last year’s models, but the most obvious difference at first glance is the addition of the Dynamic Island display cutout, which was limited last year to the pricier iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

The Dynamic Island houses the iPhone’s camera and depth sensors. There you’ll also find your active calls, audio playback, and other interactive elements, and the area expands to show relevant information as needed. This is mostly a neat visual feature rather than a functional one, but we found it useful enough in last year’s premium iPhones.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus also get an improved, f/1.6 48-megapixel main camera and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with up to 2x optical zoom. Apple is introducing its tougher Ceramic Shield display to the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, as well, and the screen will feature an increased peak display brightness of up to 2,000 nits.

However, the biggest—and most potentially controversial—change is the iPhones’ charging cable. Say goodbye to the Lightning port and all of your old Lightning cables, because Apple is finally switching to USB-C, bringing the iPhone in line with the rest of its devices.

Apple has also partnered with AAA for iPhone-based roadside assistance via satellite, which comes included with each new iPhone for two years. In addition, Apple is continuing to push its sustainability initiatives ; the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus’s frames consist of 75% recycled aluminum, while their internals use 100% recycled copper and the battery uses 100% recycled cobalt.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will come in pink, yellow, green, blue, and black color options made of aluminum with color-matched back glass. The lineup starts at $800 for the 128 GB iPhone 15 and $900 for the 128 GB iPhone 15 Plus, and they will be available for preorder starting on September 15. The phones go on sale September 22.

iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max

Four shade variations of the Apple iPhone 15 Pro, which has a titanium body, shown side by side in front of a black background.

Apple also took the wraps off the titanium-framed iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max . The shift to titanium from stainless steel was designed to make the Pro models lighter, and titanium is more resistant to fingerprint smudges. The titanium models come in four shades: black, white, blue, and a “natural” finish.

The new Pro models also sport a thinner bezel, which provides more screen area than on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max despite basically identical dimensions of 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively.

The iPhone 15 Pro models reimagine the classic ring/silent switch, turning it into an action button. You can now press and hold the button to turn on the volume or toggle it off, but the button can also trigger customizable actions such as launching the camera, starting a voice memo, or further personalizing the action button with the Shortcuts app.

The 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max run on Apple’s custom A17 Pro chip, which Apple calls “the fastest chip ever on any smartphone.” It delivers faster USB 3 transfer speeds and hardware-accelerated ray tracing for playing games on your iPhone, which will enable games to come to the iPhone 15 Pro that were previously available only on consoles, including newer titles such as the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage .

Many people upgrade to an iPhone Pro model because Apple typically saves its best camera features for the priciest iPhones, and that hasn’t changed with the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. The Pro camera lenses have a new coating to reduce lens flare, and you can choose custom focal-length defaults in the Pro Camera app. The 15 Pro Max offers 5x optical zoom in its telephoto lens plus up to 120mm focal length, and the ultra-wide camera lens provides improved night-mode and macro photography.

And, like the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are switching from Apple’s proprietary Lightning charging port to the more common USB-C standard.

To make Apple’s forthcoming headset, the Apple Vision Pro, more compelling, Apple is enabling a new video feature that lets you shoot “spatial videos” later this year on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

The iPhone 15 Pro starts at $1,000, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at $1,200 with 256 GB of storage. That represents a $100 price bump over last year’s model, but that Pro Max came with 128 GB of storage. The iPhone 15 lineup is available to preorder Friday and will go on sale September 22.

Apple Watch Series 9

A promotional image for the Apple Watch Series 9, showing two Apple Watches, one pink and one black, in front of a black background.

The Apple Watch Series 9 runs on the new S9 watch chip, which Apple promises will make animations “super smooth.” Siri requests are also now processed on the watch itself instead of in the cloud, which Apple says will produce faster responses. You can also ask Siri for your health stats or input your health info with your voice in a new feature rolling out later this year. Battery life remains unchanged at 18 hours.

The Series 9 has a second-generation ultra-wideband chip that will help you track down your iPhone when you misplace it (if it’s nearby). This feature will work only if you have a 2023 Apple Watch and an iPhone 15, however.

The Series 9 has a much brighter screen that can go much dimmer—from 2,000 nits to 1 nit. That’s double the brightness of the Series 8. Apple is also introducing a new double-tap feature with the Series 9, which activates when you tap your thumb and index finger together twice; the gesture triggers actions such as answering or ending a phone call. The feature will be available next month, Apple said.

The Series 9 comes in five shades of aluminum, including a new pink, as well as stainless steel.

Apple also announced that it’s phasing out leather in all of its accessories, starting today. The company introduced a FineWoven material for Apple Watch bands that is made of 68% recycled materials and has a suede-like feel. Apple is working with Hermès and Nike to make new bands in more eco-friendly materials.

The Apple Watch Series 9, which starts at $400 for the Bluetooth/GPS model and $500 for the cellular version, will be available to buy on September 22. You can preorder it today .

Apple Watch Ultra 2

Like the Apple Watch Series 9, the newly announced Apple Watch Ultra 2 gets the advanced S9 chip and features such as the new double-tap gesture, on-device Siri, and the new ultra-wideband chip for precision-finding your iPhone. It features an even brighter display, capable of up to 3,000 nits. You’ll also find a new Modular Ultra watch face and new cycling features.

The Ultra 2 has the same battery life as the first-generation model, 36 hours of regular use and 72 hours in low-power mode. The design remains unchanged.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 starts at $800 and is available to preorder today . The watch goes on sale September 22.

USB-C AirPods Pro

Apple is also introducing a new version of the second-generation AirPods Pro earbuds with a carrying case that has a USB-C port instead of Lightning. (The AirPods Max and the cheapest AirPods are not yet making the jump to USB-C.) In addition, Apple is updating its classic wired EarPods so that those headphones connect through USB-C rather than a Lightning port.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Marks a New Era

Apple iPhone 15 Pro

Every new iPhone in the past few years may have felt like an iterative upgrade—slightly better camera here, slightly better performance there. But Apple's new iPhone 15 lineup is getting a few once-in-a-decade changes that make them stand out in a sea of visually similar iPhones. The company announced the new iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max at its annual September event in Cupertino, California. From the addition of USB-C to the removal of the ill-famed notch, here are all the top features of the new iPhone .

If you buy something using links in our stories, we may earn a commission. This helps support our journalism. Learn more .

Closeup of the new USBC charging port on the Apple iPhone 15

There's a new port on every new iPhone. After 11 years of the Lightning charging port, its time has come to an end. Replacing it is USB-C , the reversible charging port that's available on Apple MacBooks , iPads , Android phones , Windows laptops , and many more types of devices across various categories. Often dubbed as the “universal connector,” its primary benefit here is that you can finally use the same cable to recharge most of your devices.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro connected to Apple MacBook via USBC

The new port also adds the capability for faster data transfer. However, for the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, Apple is limiting the data transfer speeds to the current 480 megabits per second. Upgrade to the iPhone 15 Pro models and you're able to unlock up to 10 Gigabits per second thanks to USB 3 support. The company is including a braided and color-matching USB-C to USB-C cable in the box, though this cable is limited to the baseline 480 Mbps transfer speeds. If you want to unlock the full potential of the Pro models, you'll need to buy your own capable cable .

Unfortunately, while USB-C could have opened the door to faster charging, Apple did not announce any improvement in charging speeds. On the company’s spec page, the official charging speed is still limited to 20 watts.

Apple has been adding USB-C to many of its own devices since 2015, but it has been collecting licensing fees for the Lightning port, which may partly be why the iPhone has been the longest holdout. However, last year the European Union ruled that USB-C must be on all new phones, tablets, and cameras by the end of 2024, and so here we are.

Along with USB-C, all four new iPhone models now have the Dynamic Island, which was first introduced and restricted to last year's iPhone 14 Pro models . This is the pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display housing the TrueDepth selfie camera. Gone is the notorious notch that debuted on the iPhone X . But the Dynamic Island, as its name suggests, is adaptive, almost acting like a second screen. If you're waiting for an Uber ride, the driver's arrival time will show up in the Dynamic Island. You can also see passive information from alarms, timers, flight information, and live sports game scores without ever having to hop into an app itself.

The 6.1-inch iPhone 15 and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus retain the same size as their predecessors. They come in black, blue, green, yellow, and pink. Outside of the Dynamic Island and USB-C, these two models aren't too different.

Apple iPhone 15 smartphones in various colors arranged in a row

They still only have 60-Hz OLED screens when nearly every other phone at their price has smoother, more fluid 120-Hz refresh rate screens . They're powered by the A16 chipset, the very same that powered last year's iPhone 14 Pro models, and they're also stealing the 48-megapixel primary camera from the Pro, enabling them to capture more detail than ever before. The 12-megapixel ultrawide camera is largely the same. Apple, as usual, has announced improvements to its Photonic computational photography engine, so you should expect nicer photos overall, but time will tell.

Front and back of the Apple iPhone 15

Apple has saved many more of the upgrades for the Pro models to make them more worthy of the moniker. They are powered by the new A17 Pro chipset, which promises 10 percent faster performance cores, and a 2X faster neural engine.

Apple says the graphics processor unit is also the “biggest redesign in the history of Apple GPUs,” citing a 20 percent speed bump over its predecessor. Apple says this new GPU can create more detailed environments in mobile games while drawing less power, and it now has hardware-accelerated ray tracing , which is 4X faster. Because of all this, Apple says you can play console games like Resident Evil: Village on the iPhone 15 Pro, and games like the upcoming Assassin's Creed Mirage will have an iPhone version alongside console and PC versions. It'll be interesting to see how the fidelity of these AAA games matches up to their console counterparts.

Closeup of the titanium frame on the iPhone 15 Pro

Nice brushed finish.

You still get the 120-Hz ProMotion screen on the Pro, but Apple has refined the design to slim down the bezels around the display and, more importantly, added a titanium frame. Instead of stainless steel, the titanium 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max are now much lighter and more durable, which should make the latter easier to wield with one hand.

The big new camera change here is the addition of a periscope zoom camera exclusively for the iPhone 15 Pro Max model. This technology isn't new—Samsung famously has had a 10X optical zoom camera in its Galaxy Ultra phones for a few years, and last year's Google Pixel 7 Pro uses a 5X optical periscope zoom camera. Here, Apple says it enables 5X optical zoom, allowing you to capture subjects at a distance in high quality. The smaller iPhone 15 Pro is, sadly, still stuck at 3X zoom.

Closeup of a person's hand holding the iPhone 15 and displaying the new Action Button feature

Another exclusive for the Pro models is the Action Button. If this sounds familiar, it's the same name Apple gave to the extra customizable button on the Apple Watch Ultra , except on the iPhone, it's replacing the classic mute switch that has been on every iPhone since 2007. You can customize this button to trigger certain actions, like muting the phone, turning on the flashlight, or taking a photo with the camera open.

Apple placed an emphasis on sustainability throughout its September event and announced that it was moving away from leather cases and straps for its devices. It announced a new sustainable fabric material called FineWoven, and it declared that its going to be phasing out leather in favor of recycled and plant-based materials.

Apple FineWoven Cases on the iPhone 15 Pro smartphones

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus remain at the same price of $799 and $899, respectively. The iPhone 15 Pro stays at the same price of $999, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max is getting a price increase to $1,199, a $100 jump from their predecessors. However, you now get 256 GB of storage on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and this is the same price as the 256-GB iPhone 14 Pro Max. These phones will be up for preorder on Friday, September 15, and will officially launch on September 22. Stay tuned for our review soon.

An iPhone 15 lineup that’s finally compatible with USB-C

One of the biggest changes coming to this year’s iPhone lineup is the addition of USB-C. For the first time, the iPhone 15 is expected to come with the widely used port instead of Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector. This doesn’t come as a surprise, as Apple confirmed last year that it would make the change to USB-C to comply with the European Union’s incoming regulations.

Although reports indicate that all phones in the iPhone 15 lineup will get the USB-C port, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says only the Pro and Pro Max will benefit from higher data transfer rates. Both premium models will come with “at least” USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3, while the base iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will support USB 2.0, according to Kuo. Either way, 9to5Mac reports that all iPhone 15 models should have faster 35W charging rates thanks to the switch.

The top of an iPhone.

Additionally, supply chain analyst Ross Young reported last year that all models of the iPhone 15 will come with the Dynamic Island . That’s a change from what Apple currently offers, as it only includes the pill-shaped cutout on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max . The entire iPhone 15 lineup is expected to get an ultra wideband chip, too.

This time around, the most significant changes coming to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are reported to be a titanium frame, thinner bezels, and a more repairable aluminum chassis that we first saw with the iPhone 14 , according to Bloomberg ’s Mark Gurman . The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max might also have a faster A17 chip built using the 3nm process, while the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will likely come with the A16 chip included in the iPhone 14 Pro.

Both premium models may come with an Action Button similar to the one on the Apple Watch Ultra, as reported by MacRumors and 9to5Mac . This button is supposed to replace the mute toggle and could allow you to assign shortcuts to different apps and utilities. You can see how the Action Button may look in leaked photos and a video of upcoming iPhone 15 Pro cases. And while early rumors suggested that Apple will replace the volume rocker and the power button on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max with solid-state toggles, recent reports from Kuo and leaker Unknownz21 suggest they’ll stay the same for now.

There have been rumors about an iPhone 15 Pro Max rebranding as well. While Gurman reported last year that Apple could change the name to the “Ultra,” he recently reversed that prediction, saying it will keep the Pro Max moniker. Oh, and there is one change that the iPhone 15 Max — or Ultra — may exclusively get: a periscope lens with up to 6x optical zoom . All those updates could result in a potentially more expensive price. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives predicts the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will cost $1,099 and $1,199 respectively, marking a $100 price increase for both models.

We also may see some changes to the colors Apple includes in its iPhone 15 Pro line as well. According to 9to5Mac , Apple could swap its gold finish for a “titan gray.” The company may reveal a new dark blue option as well, which it might be teasing with the color scheme it included in its event invite. In addition to dark blue and gray, the iPhone 15 Pro is also expected to come in black and white. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 15 is rumored to feature black, blue, yellow, white, and pink variants.

An incremental update to the Apple Watch lineup

In addition to the iPhone 15, Apple is also likely to reveal its latest smartwatch lineup — and so far, we’re not expecting many major changes. Not much is known about the update to the premium Apple Watch Ultra besides that it will reportedly retain its 49mm size and come with a new darker titanium case . But other rumors indicate that the Watch Series 9 will come with an updated S9 processor.

The second Watch Ultra is expected to come in a darker color option.

According to Gurman , the S9 chip is based on the A15 processor that Apple introduced with the iPhone 13. This could allow for more efficiency and better battery life when compared to its predecessor, which comes equipped with the S8 chip that’s based on the same tech as the processors in the previous two Watch models. Gurman also predicts that Apple’s watch lineup could come with an ultra wideband chip, along with “various sensor and internal component upgrades,” such as an updated optical heart rate sensor.

Other smaller updates expected to come with the Watch Series 9 include a pink color option and the option of a band with a magnetic buckle . Additionally, some are speculating that Apple will use 3D-printed materials in some of its upcoming smartwatches. We likely won’t see a new Watch SE during this year’s event, as the product appears to be on a two-year refresh cycle and was just updated last year.

AirPods Pro with a USB-C-equipped charging case

The iPhone 15 isn’t the only Apple device that’s expected to get the USB-C treatment. Gurman reports that Apple plans on releasing a pair of AirPods Pro with USB-C during its event in September.

That tracks with a prediction from Kuo last year, who said Apple would launch AirPods with a USB-C charging case in 2023. It’s not clear whether Apple will actually make any updates to the AirPods Pro themselves , however — it may just update its charging case.

Modder Ken Pillonel added USB-C to both the AirPods and AirPods Pro cases.

In January, Kuo said Apple could ship its fourth-gen AirPods in the second half of 2024 or the first half of 2025, along with a second generation of its over-the-ear AirPods Max — both of which may also come with USB-C . Other rumors suggest Apple may launch a new pair of cheaper $99 AirPods as well. If that’s the case, we’re a full year or more away from big updates.

However, the AirPods Pro are still set to get some new features through an upcoming software update. That includes Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and better automatic device switching.

More info on iOS 17, macOS Sonoma, and more

With a new iPhone and watch coming, we’ll probably get the release dates for iOS 17 and watchOS 10 during Apple’s upcoming event. As for iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma, we might not see them until later this fall, in line with Apple’s recent pattern of launching them in October.

But the betas for each of these operating systems have been out for some time now, giving us a peek at what we can expect. While iOS 17 comes with a number of small but meaningful upgrades, including StandBy mode , voicemail transcriptions , and a Journal app , macOS Sonoma adds widgets , a game mode, and profiles on Safari .

StandBy Mode in iOS 17.

As for iPadOS 17, Apple is adding personalized lock screens , interactive widgets, the Health app, and support for external USB webcams and cameras . Apple is launching an update to Stage Manager as well, which finally lets you customize the sizes and orientations of each window on your screen.

Lastly, watchOS 10 will also incorporate widgets (seeing a trend yet?) that should give you quick access to various apps. There are also new topographic mapping features, mood logging, and a couple of new watchfaces.

Is there anything else?

There are a few other things Apple is rumored to be working on that likely won’t make an appearance at its iPhone 15 event. That includes some new Macs and iPads, which Apple usually holds an event for in October.

This fall, we’re expecting a new iMac, a 13-inch MacBook Air, and a 13-inch MacBook Pro powered by Apple’s new in-house M3 chip. On the iPad side of things, rumors suggest that we might see the release of the seventh-gen iPad Mini .

But even with all these exciting launches on the horizon, all eyes are still on the $3,499 Apple Vision Pro , which is set for release early next year. We’re likely to see some updates in the months leading up to its launch.

Apple event reveals new iPhone 15. Here are the biggest changes — and its surprising new price.

By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: September 12, 2023 / 4:33 PM EDT / MoneyWatch

Apple unveiled its latest iPhone lineup today at the company's annual launch in Cupertino, California, where the tech giant also introduced a new Apple watch.

The event is an important showcase for Apple, which wants to spur consumers to upgrade their older iPhones in favor of its latest devices. This year is especially important given that the company is struggling to break out of a slump that's led to a sales drop in three consecutive quarters.

"These are the best and most capable iPhones we've ever made," Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the Tuesday event.

Here's what to know about today's event.

What is new about the iPhone 15?

Here are some of the changes announced by Apple on Tuesday:

  • The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will come in five colors: Pink, yellow, green, blue and black
  • The iPhone 15 Pro models will come in black titanium, white titanium, blue titanium or a natural titanium finish
  • The Pro includes an A17 bionic chip that will improve speed and performance, according to Apple
  • All models iPhone 15 models have the "Dynamic Island" for app notifications — a look that was introduced with last year's Pro and Pro Max devices
  • The phone comes in two sizes: Either a 6.1-inch base model or 6.7-inch screen Plus model
  • The iPhone 15 has an improved, 48 megapixel camera

When will the iPhone 15 be available for purchase?

The Apple iPhone 15 will be available for preorder on Friday, September 15, and will be on sale in stores on September 22.

What will the iPhone 15 cost?

Apple is keeping the price of many iPhone 15 models the same as the 14.

  • The iPhone 15 will start at $799, while the 15 Plus will start at $899, with 128GB of internal storage. That's the same price as for current iPhone 14 models
  • The iPhone 15 Pro will start at $999, which is the same price as the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple said
  • The Phone 15 Pro Max starts at $1,199, up $100 from the 14 Pro Max

Apple also said it will have "excellent offers" for consumers who want to upgrade, including up to $800 off when you trade in an iPhone 11 or newer.

Is the iPhone charger moving from Lightning?

Apple is phasing out its Lightning port cables, which were rolled out in 2012 with the iPhone 5, because of a mandate from European regulators that all phones use the USB-C charging port starting in late 2024.

Apple said its iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will have USB-C ports, but can also be charged with MagSafe, which is a magnetically attached power connector.

The transition may not be too inconvenient for most consumers. That's because USB-C cables already are so widely used on a range of computers, smartphones and other devices that many people may already own them.

The shift to USB-C cables may even prove popular since that standard typically charges devices more quickly and also offers faster speeds for data transfers.

What is new with the Apple Watch?

Besides its new iPhones, Apple introduced the new Apple Watch — a product that made its debut nearly a decade ago.

The Apple Watch Series 9 starts at $399, while the Apple Watch SE starts at $249, Apple said on Tuesday.

One new Apple Watch feature is something called "double tap," a command users can deploy to answer calls or play or pause music with one hand. By tapping your index finger and thumb twice on your watch hand, the watch will respond to the gesture, Apple said.

The double tap gesture could be useful for someone walking their dog or carrying items, allowing them to send commands to their Apple Watch with one hand, the company said.

Should I upgrade my iPhone?

About 25% of Apple's 1.2 billion iPhone users haven't upgraded their phones in four years, according to Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives. Some of those 300 million people with older iPhones may be wondering if it's time to open their wallets and get a new device this year.

Still, it can be tough to determine when it's time to retire your old phone and switch to the latest iPhone. Much of that decision could depend on what type of handset you currently use, with owners of newer models having less of a reason to upgrade, Olivier Blanchard, a research director at tech research firm The Futurum Group, told CBS MoneyWatch

"The company's products remain amazing, but with the innovation curve of the whole smartphone category flattening there just isn't much the company can do to distinguish each generation of iPhone from its predecessors when it comes to technical features, making price the critical variable in driving sales," Wall Street analyst Adam Crisafullo of Vital Knowledge told investors in a report.

But if you have a smartphone that's older than the iPhone 12, the iPhone 15's new chip, improved camera features and USB-C port could be a big step up.

The 6 biggest announcements from Apple’s iPhone 15 event

Every year brings something new, and that’s doubly true for smartphones. Summer is on the way out, and while the retreat of the sun is bad news for many, there’s a bright silver lining on this cloud: The release of the Apple iPhone 15 . Apple has brought the basic iPhones into line with the Pro models, giving even the cheapest flagship models access to the Dynamic Island and the design refresh that we loved in last year’s Pro iPhones. But that isn’t all, as the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max were also revealed, with improvements of their own.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus

Iphone 15 pro and pro max, apple watch series 9, apple watch ultra 2, sustainability updates.

But the iPhone 15 wasn’t the only announcement we heard about today. While the new phones were the centerpiece of Apple’s announcements, we were also treated to the new Apple Watch Series 9 smartwatch and the upgraded Apple Watch Ultra 2 .

You’ve unfortunately missed the chance to watch the announcements as they unfolded, but don’t worry, because we saw it all. Here’s the list of everything Apple announced at the iPhone 15 event.

But before we dive into the Apple iPhone 15, let’s touch on the change we all knew was coming: USB-C.

There’s a new port in town as Apple is getting ahead of the curve where EU legislation is concerned, and so it’s replacing the Lightning port with the standardized USB-C port. That’s the same port you’ll find on most modern iPads, laptops, and Android smartphones, and it will be a relief for anyone who travels with a number of devices. Unfortunately, it does mean the end of Apple’s Lightning port, but with USB-C being capable of much faster charging and data transfer speeds, it’s a change worth getting used to.

Apple is also releasing new USB-C versions of the AirPods  ( they support wireless lossless audio now, too! ), Earpods, and other accessories that previously used a Lightning port. Apple also took a moment to remind everyone that MagSafe exists, so you don’t need to worry about USB-C if you really don’t want to.

The release of a new iPhone every year has long stopped being a surprise, but the Apple iPhone 15 took our breath away anyway. The Apple iPhone 15 comes in a series of stunning pastel colors, including black, blue, green, yellow, and pink. The color has been infused into the iPhone 15’s rear glass, giving it the diffuse look of frosted glass. It’s a striking look and is probably the most visually colorful iPhone since the iPhone XR .

But while the new colors are impressive, the biggest changes can be found around the front of the phone. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus now have the redesign that debuted with the iPhone 14 Pro, and that means they also have access to the Dynamic Island. While the Dynamic Island still has a lot to prove , this change now gives the flagship iPhone range a unified look, even if the Pro models are clearly going their own way with color — more on that later.

The OLED Super Retina XDR display has smaller bezels than before and reaches 1600 nits (with a peak brightness of 2000 nits), making it brighter and easier to see in sunlight. The iPhone 15 has a 6.1-inch display, while the 15 Plus has a 6.7-inch display, unchanged from last year. Android fans should note that, unlike the Pro models, the new iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are still limited to a 60Hz refresh rate .

The iPhone 15 sports a dual-lens rear camera setup, and it’s seen some major tweaks. The main camera lens packs 48 megapixels, which offers some additional flexibility. If you want incredible high fidelity, then shoot in 48MP mode. Or, if you’re a bit worried about lighting, the iPhone 15 can instead combine four pixels together with pixel binning to maximize light. This results in combined 12MP images, which also helps to keep file sizes down. The high megapixel count also means the 48MP lens can use its inner 12MP as a 2x optical zoom, bringing you closer to the action without sacrificing quality. Portrait mode is getting better too, and the iPhone 15’s camera app will use machine learning to predict if a shot should be in portrait mode or not. You can even change the point of focus and bokeh blur in postprocessing.

Unfortunately, the iPhone 15 will stay a step behind the Pro model where performance is concerned. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus use last year’s A16 Bionic processor, and while this is still an incredibly powerful chip, it’s slightly disappointing to see Apple keep the basic iPhone model a year behind. However, the battery is bigger than ever, which is always a bonus. The iPhone 15 also has a new Ultra Wideband chip, so you can use it to find your friends — as long as they have a compatible iPhone, too, of course.

Apple loves machine learning, so it’s no surprise it’s been improved again. Voice Isolation is a new feature for phone calls that identifies your voice and removes all other background noise. So if you’re constantly making calls in a noisy environment, this feature is for you. Remember the satellite support from last year ? The iPhone 15 range gets further satellite support, including Roadside Assistance, which will use satellites to get you help while you’re on (or unfortunately off) the road, so you don’t need to worry about being stuck in the sticks without a signal. You’ll get access to these satellites for free for two years with the iPhone 15.

Preorders open on September 15, and the phones release on September 22. The Apple iPhone 15 starts from $799, while the iPhone 15 Plus starts from $899. You’ll be able to trade in an iPhone from the iPhone 11 and newer to get up to $800 off your purchase when purchased through specific carrier deals on monthly payment plans.

Is the Apple iPhone 15 Pro an afterthought after the huge upgrades to the iPhone 15? You can bet your bottom dollar it isn’t. Where the iPhone 15’s new pastel colors bring whimsy and light, the new Pro is serious and strong. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are both made from titanium, a material that’s lighter and stronger than standard steel. But this isn’t just any titanium. It’s grade 5 titanium, an alloy which is even stronger than pure titanium — a truly premium material for a premium phone. The brushed finish adds a darker tone to each of its colors, marking a stark contrast with the iPhone 15.

Slimmer bezels also mean the Pro models are slightly smaller in footprint while retaining their 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays. Those displays are Super Retina XDR OLED panels, and these continue to be the only iPhones offered with the ProMotion technology that allows for a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

There’s big news for longtime Apple fans, too: the mute switch is gone. This beloved feature has been replaced by the Action button. But don’t worry, Apple was quick to point out that it still fulfills the same function. Push and hold the button to mute your phone and you’ll feel a distinct haptic vibration, so you can do it in a pocket. The Action button offers more, though, as you can choose from a different number of shortcuts to trigger with a press. This can include opening the camera, starting a timer, turning on the flashlight, and more.

We always expect new silicone, and Apple hasn’t let us down this year. The iPhone 15 Pro is powered by the Apple A17 Pro, the industry’s first 3-nanometer chip. It has two high-performance cores, four high-efficiency cores, and a six-core GPU. The neural engine has 16 cores, making machine learning even faster and more powerful. It’s a stupendously powerful processor, and incredibly, it can handle console-level games like Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Village , with Assassin’s Creed Mirage coming to the iPhone 15 Pro as well. It can even handle ray tracing , a jaw-dropping feat for a smartphone.

The iPhone 15 Pro’s 48MP main lens is similar to the one you’ll find in the iPhone 15, but with a few additional tweaks. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is the model that’s getting the most love, though, with the introduction of a periscope zoom lens with a 5x optical zoom. While not as long as the periscope zooms offered by Samsung , it will offer a lot of extra variety for photography lovers. It’s a shame it’s only coming to the Pro Max model, though. The iPhone 15 Pro gets the same 3x optical zoom as last year, which, while a strong lens, is still a disappointment for those who might have wanted a long zoom in a more compact phone.

The Apple iPhone 15 Pro starts from $999, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max starts from $1,199. You’ll be able to trade in an iPhone from the iPhone 11 and newer for up to $1,000 off your new iPhone Pro when purchased through a carrier contract. Preorders launch on September 15, and phones will ship on September 22.

As everyone expected, there’s a new top smartwatch in town, and it’s called the Apple Watch Series 9 . In the last few years, Apple’s smartwatch has gone from a notable notification slinger to a vital health monitor for millions. Apple hasn’t massively expanded on health and safety this year, but it has added some features worth paying attention to.

The biggest new addition is, er, one that technically already existed. Formerly buried in the accessibility settings, Double Tap has been brought to the forefront and expanded in utility. It’s an easy concept to grasp: tap your index finger and thumb together twice to control your Apple Watch. Double Tap interacts with the primary button on any app, so it can be used to pick up or hang up calls, scroll through widgets on your watch face, or even stop and start exercises. You can even use it to snooze an alarm, a worrying development for those of us with overactive muscle memory and a propensity to oversleep.

The Apple Watch Series 9 also includes the improved Ultra Wideband chip and can now be used to find your iPhone or display Now Playing controls for nearby HomePods. The display brightens to 2000 nits, making it easier to see in bright sunlight, and it drops all the way down to 1 nit for dark rooms.

All those new features need some extra power, so it’s good it came prepared. The new Apple Watch Series 9 is powered by the S9 processor, which Apple claims is 30% faster than the S8 in the Apple Watch Series 8 . While your Apple Watch isn’t likely to need to run anything demanding, it makes sure requests through Siri and other everyday tasks are able to be completed faster. Speaking of Siri, Apple’s digital assistant can now interact with your health data. As such, you can ask Siri how long you slept or vocally log your weight to your assistant.

The new Apple Watch Series 9 was also key to Apple’s presentation on sustainability. The new Apple Watch uses as many recycled materials as possible, including recycled cobalt for the first time ever. The Sport Loop band is made from recycled material, and all Apple Watch manufacturing will be powered by renewable electricity. Apple’s not stopping there: user charging represents a big pull on sustainability, so Apple is investing in green electricity across the world to offset those expected emissions.

The new Apple Watch even comes in a smaller box, allowing Apple to ship more watches per shipment. All of this has made the Apple Watch Series 9 Apple’s first fully carbon-neutral product.

The Apple Watch Series 9 is available for preorder from today and will be released on September 22. Prices start from $399.

The Apple Watch Series 9 isn’t your only choice in smartwatch, and if you’re really into outdoor pursuits, especially diving and climbing, you should check out the Apple Watch Ultra 2 . While it’s still clear that the Ultra 2’s design is primarily meant for divers and explorers, Apple took a moment to highlight that the Apple Watch Ultra 2 works equally well with the new features for jogging and cycling. You certainly won’t struggle to see the screen during any outdoor activity, thanks to a display that can reach 3,000 nits in brightness.

Thanks to also including the same S9 system in a package (SiP) as the Apple Watch Series 9, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 also has access to the new Double Tap feature and improved Siri features. The battery life will really appeal to those who spend hours outdoors, thanks to the 36 hours of battery life and 72 hours in low-power mode. The case is made from 95% recycled material, and if paired with a recycled Sport Loop, it’s also carbon neutral.

Like the Series 9, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 releases on September 22, with preorders opening today. It will cost $799.

Apple is serious about sustainability, and it took a moment to update us on its vision for carbon neutrality, Apple 2030 . All plastic will be eliminated from packaging by the end of 2024, with recycled plastics playing a big part in Apple’s watch straps going forward. Apple is making big use of recycled materials as a whole, using 100% recycled aluminum in MacBooks, Apple TVs, and Apple Watches. The Apple Watch Series 9 makes significant use of recycled materials, such as copper, gold, and even cobalt.

Incredibly, Apple also made a big announcement on leather. Namely, Apple won’t be using leather in any new products. It’s being replaced by FineWoven, a 68% recycled material that feels like suede and should help to cushion the blow for fans of leather. Hermes and Nike’s bands will also include a large amount of recycled materials, removing yet more plastic from the ecosystem.

Apple also runs off 100% clean electricity, including its offices, stores, and data centers, and over 300 suppliers have also agreed to only use renewable electricity. Apple is also serious about reforestation and has planted several new forests in Paraguay and Brazil, as well as grasslands in Kenya, and helped to restore mangroves in Colombia. It has also reduced its water usage by 63 billion gallons.

Apple continues to change iOS to fall in line with directives from the EU, and the latest would have been unthinkable in the past. Apple will make the App Store a deletable app on iPhones and iPads located in the EU. The same applies to a series of other apps that would usually be considered core iOS apps that could not be deleted.

“The App Store, Messages, Photos, Camera, and Safari apps will now be deletable for users in the EU,” Apple wrote in a news update published on its Developer website, confirming which apps will be an option in the near future. At the moment, the App Store and some other Apple preinstalled apps can be removed from the Home Screen in iOS, but are only relegated to the App Library, with no option to delete the apps completely.

The iPhone 16 is (hopefully) only a month or so away, but it feels like we're getting a new leak with every day that goes by. Many of those come courtesy of Ice Universe, a well-known leaker with a reliable track record. They now say that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have the thinnest bezels of any iPhone ever made.

The latest image shows the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a bezel size of just 1.153mm, versus the estimated size of 1.55mm on the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro. Ice Universe's latest information also strengthens another leak from June that gauged the iPhone 16 Pro Max's bezels at 1.15mm and the iPhone 16 Pro at 1.2mm.

Bored? Swipe all the way over to the App Library on your iPhone and type "":: in the search bar. Congratulations! You've just crashed your iPhone. But don't worry — it's not permanent or serious, according to security researchers.

Mastodon user Konstantin found that typing those four characters into the search bar will crash SpringBoard, the app responsible for the iPhone home screen. All it does is throw the phone into a loop for a moment before returning you to your lock screen. It doesn't close any apps or cause any other issues; if anything, it's just a reset. I tested it on my device and found nothing out of the ordinary.

Apple Event 2023: Where to watch iPhone 15, USB-C announcements

Apple logo

UPDATE: Sep. 12, 2023, 11:40 a.m. PDT Editor's note: This event has ended, but the former livestream is now a playable video that shows it in its entirety.

The annual Apple Event is tantalizingly close. Best get your plans for watching it figured out now before it's too late.

Apple plans on pulling the curtain off the iPhone 15 (and potentially other stuff ) at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Sept. 12. As always, it's being streamed live to the internet, so you don't need to be some fancy tech journalist to see the proceedings. Apple has also given fans a few different ways to watch, like in previous years. Here's how to see the iPhone 15 event live:

On Apple's website

On the Apple TV app on a streaming device

And on YouTube

All three solutions should be fine, though we should note that the YouTube stream tends to be a little bit behind the stream on Apple's website. Maybe you care about that, maybe you don't, but it's worth knowing either way.

Mashable Games

You'll have to watch the event to find out everything that gets announced, but we have a vague idea of what to expect ahead of time. There should be four new iPhones, some of which will most likely have USB-C charging ports and all of which should have Dynamic Island in the display. There may also be a new Apple Watch, as well as potentially new AirPods. Anything is possible, but those are the things that seem most likely.

Apple Event 2023: Today Is the Expected iPhone 15 Reveal and More

Today, we could see the iPhone 15, Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and, maybe, an iPhone 15 Ultra announced.

Invitation for the Apple September iPhone 15 event

Apple sent out invites for a Sept. 12 event. The tagline is "Wonderlust."

Today is  Apple's Wonderlust event , and we expect to see the rumored iPhone 15 and new Apple Watches announced. You can  watch Apple's Wonderlust event stream  starting at 10 a.m. PDT/1 p.m. EDT. This will be the first event since Apple unveiled the Vision Pro at WWDC earlier this summer. The annual fall iPhone event has become a cultural touch point heralding the end of summer, right up there with pumpkin spice.

For months, a seemingly endless flow of iPhone 15 rumors have circulated online. Some hint at a rather straightforward round of year-over-year upgrades, while others point to the possibility of a rebranded larger Pro model called the iPhone 15 Ultra . As the anticipation builds, here's everything you can expect from today's Apple's fall event.

Wanderlust or wonderlust?

The event's invite is characteristically enigmatic, showing an Apple logo made up of tiny, dustlike particles. The logo has grooves carved out of it, a bit like the forms you see on windswept sand dunes.

The tagline, "Wonderlust," is of course a play on the word " wanderlust," which means a strong longing for or impulse toward wandering . Does wonderlust mean a strong longing for or impulse toward wondering? Like everyone else, we're trying to read something into the invite  and wondering what it has to do with Apple's upcoming announcements. Could the grooved cutouts in the logo refer to a less boxy iPhone design? Could the particles refer to improved cameras capable of capturing more detail? Could the colors -- metallic shades of gray, blue and even gold -- be a reference to the colors of the new iPhone or Apple Watch?

Or is this all just Apple acknowledging the fleeting nature of existence? No idea. But I expect the iPhone 15 Pro will be the headliner.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus

As in the iPhone 14 series, there will likely be four models in the new iPhone lineup: the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who has a solid record when covering Apple leaks, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will basically be a repackaged iPhone 14 Pro without the telephoto camera or stainless steel body.

The new phones would inherit a 48-megapixel main camera and the A16 chip from the 14 Pros. On the outside, the two phones will trade their display notches for the Dynamic Island cutout that also debuted on the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

iPhone 14 family

Apple brought the Plus model back for last year's iPhone 14 series. It replaced the spot previously reserved for the iPhone Mini model.

Despite the addition of the Dynamic Island, don't expect any other changes to the screen. Display analyst Ross Young said in a September 2022 post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he isn't expecting base iPhone 15 models to get a high refresh rate like Apple's Pro iPhones.

And according to a May report by ChargerLab, a battery and charging specialist website with a steady track record for rumors, all four iPhone 15 models will support 15-watt wireless charging using the Qi2 open standard announced earlier this year . If this turns out to be true, it could mean the iPhone 15 would open up a whole new world of wireless charging devices that don't necessarily need to be licensed Apple MagSafe accessories.

  • Apple Watch Series 9 First Look: Double Tap, Faster Performance

But the biggest change expected for all four iPhones will be the shift away from the Lightning connector. Likely driven by pressure from the European Union, which passed legislation adopting USB-C as a common charging standard , the iPhone 15 series will have a USB-C port instead of a Lighting port. The last time Apple switched the iPhone's power port was in 2012, when it debuted the Lighting port on the iPhone 5, which spelled the end of the wide 30-pin iPod connector that was previously used.

It's a bit hazy how exactly Apple will handle this, like whether USB-C will be on all new iPhones globally or just in the EU. But it's highly likely that all new iPhone models will be sold with a USB-C port for the foreseeable future.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro camera lenses

The lenses on the iPhone 14 Pro Max stick out quite a bit. Apple might put its next telephoto lens inside the body of the iPhone 15 Pro Max via a periscope assembly.

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max

Of everything Apple's expected to announce, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max could have the biggest changes. According to  Bloomberg's Gurman, stainless steel is gone, and instead the Pro model's frame will be made from titanium. The shift in materials could help reduce the overall weight of each phone, which is hefty even without a case.

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will likely get a new chip called A17 that features a supertiny, 3-nanometer processor, Apple's smallest silicon to date. Around the front, the two phones will likely have thinner display bezels.

The Xperia 1 V's camera bump

A close-up of the Sony Xperia 1 V's camera bump. The bottom lens is actually a mirror that allows the periscope lens that's mounted horizontally in the body to take photos.

The Pro models' biggest change will be the USB-C port, which in a break from the regular 15 and 15 Plus could support faster data speeds for things like transferring files and ProRes video files .

The iPhone 15 Pro Max may get a new 6x optical telephoto camera. Ming-Chi Kuo, a noted Apple analyst with TF International Securities,  predicts the iPhone 15 Pro Max will have a horizontal mounted periscope lens and camera unit inside the phone's body, similar to ones in the Pixel 7 Pro, Galaxy S23 Ultra and Sony Xperia 1 V.

Doubling the native optical zoom from 3x to 6x should enable you to capture zoomed-in photos with better detail, resolution and dynamic range compared with the 6x digital zoom on a current iPhone 14 Pro.

a hand holding a phone

The HTC U12 had no physical button. Instead there were nubs where buttons would normally go that were touch sensitive. Apple is rumored to be doing the same on its iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

Kuo's report also hints at both Pro models having solid-state volume and power buttons, which would further differentiate them from the regular 15 and 15 Plus. The buttons wouldn't be mechanical and would be more akin to the touch sensitive area that debuted on the iPhone 7 and acts like a "home button" thanks to some clever haptic feedback. Back in 2018, the HTC U12 had solid-state buttons instead of mechanical ones; however, the experience using them wasn't great.

There are a couple of rumors that have been circulating despite being a bit dated or unlikely. The first is that the iPhone 15 Pro Max may be rebranded as the iPhone 15 Ultra. Bloomberg's Gurman mentioned the possibility nearly a year ago, but that should be taken with a grain of salt since more recently Gurman hasn't brought it up.

Another up-in-the-air rumor comes by the way of MacRumors, which found code in a beta version of iOS 17 that describes functionality for an action button like the one on the Apple Watch Ultra. Such a hardware addition would be a first for Apple, and the iPhone's action button would be for more-phone-oriented tasks like shortcuts or triggering the camera shutter. We'll have to wait until the 12th to find out.

Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2

Apple Watch Ultra vs Series 8

Apple Watch Ultra (left) vs. 41mm Apple Watch Series 8.

In a less ambitious update, it seems the next regular Apple Watch will likely be a relatively modest year-over-year iteration of the Apple Watch Series 8. The Series 9 could come in a new color. As reported  by MacRumors, based on a post by X/Twitter user ShrimpApplePro, the Apple Watch Series 9 might come in a new pink color.

The Series 9 will likely be powered by a new S9 chip, which Bloomberg's Gurman, posting to his Power On Discord channel back in May, described as bringing improvements to performance and efficiency. That's another way of saying the battery life might be better.

The Apple Watch Ultra could see a second-generation version. The rugged watch debuted last year, and a new version could bring a faster chip and come in a black titanium finish, according to an X/Twitter post by ShrimpApplePro. A black version of the Ultra could look amazing!

All right, let's talk about everything else.

Potpourri and wrap-up

Apple Vision Pro on display during WWDC at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California

Will the Vision Pro make an appearance at Apple's Sept. 12 event?

The AirPods case could see a new version with a USB-C connector . iOS 17 and WatchOS 10 will likely get an official release date. And I can't imagine that Apple would pass up a chance to update everyone on its Vision Pro headset that was announced in June at WWDC.

Obviously, until Tim Cook and crew walk onto that stage in the Steve Jobs Theater and make their announcements, we won't know anything for certain.
