How to apply online to the NWU

In this guide, we'll go over how to apply to the North-West University (NWU) online.

Here's what you'll need:

• An email account. Here's how to create a Gmail account .
• Your cellphone number.
• Your grade 11 term 4 results (if you are currently in Grade 12)
• Your Matric/Grade 12 results (statement or certificate) if you've completed grade 12/matric
• A qualification in mind that you'd like to apply for. If undecided, you can use our NWU APS Calculator to find out your score and use the latest prospectus to see what you may qualify for.

Once you've got all that, let's apply!

Step 1: Visit Application Portal

Visit the NWU application portal by typing in https://apply.org.za/applytonwu in your browser. This will take you to the new application portal . (See image below)

Step 2: Create an Account

If this is your first time applying, create an account on the new portal and click on the submit button. Users who have used the previous VSS portal will also need to register a new account. Your username will be your email address. (See image below)

Step 3: Check your email for a temporary password

You will receive an email from the NWU with your new temporary password. Sometimes it may take up to 2 hours to receive the email. (See example image below)

Copy the new temporary password. Then click on the here text in the email to log in and change the password. In the old password box enter the temporary password you copied from the email. (Make sure to enter the password exactly as you received it). Then create a new secure password (If you are using Chrome use the suggested secure password as Google will remember it for you in case you forget it).

Step 4: Log in with your new password

Now, log in with the new password you created. The username is your email address.

Step 5: Start a new application

Click on the Apply Now button in purple to begin your application.

Step 6: Choose a qualification

On this page, enter your preferred method of learning and choose the qualification you'd like to apply for.

Presentation is how you'd like to study with Contact being located at an NWU campus and Distance being from home or remotely.

You will then choose the programme you'd like to apply for by searching for it then selecting it. Then hit the Save and Continue button.

Step 7: Enter your Personal Details

Once choosing your programme you will be taken to add details about yourself. Make sure to complete all required information.

You will then after adding all your information and contact details then Proceed to the next section.

Step 8: Add education experience

You will then add information about your previous education if you have studied at other institutions.

Step 9: Add School Subjects and Marks

You will then add your school subjects and the marks you received for each subject. You will search for your school and choose whether you'd like to add Grade 11 or 12 marks. Please DO NOT enter your grade 12 term 1 or 2 marks if you are currently in grade 12 .

If you come across the “Error in adding new row” error (shown in the image below), just refresh the page and everything will work well.

Step 10: Add funding source

In the next Additional Information tab, enter the source of how you'll expect to fund your studies. If you plan on applying for NSFAS, choose the NSFAS option. You should also specify if you'd like to apply for on-campus student accommodation.

Step 11: Upload Documents

We're just about to finish, we discussed at the beginning of the guide that some documents will be required. You will then upload them here. See the screenshot on how to do this.

If you are in grade 12, upload your grade 11 term 4/final results. If completed grade 12, upload your matric certificate/statement. If at another university, upload your first semester results under Additional Supporting Document .

Step 12: Sign Declaration

You will need to sign the declaration that everything you submitted is true then submit your application. YOU WILL NOT be able to edit your application after submission so make sure everything is completed an correct before submitting.

Phew, you're done! You have now completed your online NWU application with UniApplyForMe ! You will receive a confirmation email from the NWU that you've submitted your application and your application reference.

There is much to consider in deciding on an appropriate presentation method.

This page assumes that you have already prepared your presentation , or at least decided on the key messages that you wish to get across to your audience, and given at least some thought to how to organise your material .

On this page, then, we focus on the mechanics of your presentation method: how you will present.

This includes using sound systems, how to manage visual aids, how you stand, and how much interaction you want with your audience.

What Helps you to Decide your Presentation Method?

In making a decision about your presentation method, you have to take into account several key aspects. These include:

The facilities available to you by way of visual aids, sound systems, and lights. Obviously you cannot use facilities that are not available. If you are told that you will need to present without a projector, you’re going to need to decide on a method that works without slides.

The occasion. A formal conference of 200 people will require a very different approach from a presentation to your six-person team. And a speech at a wedding is totally different again. Consider the norms of the occasion. For example, at a wedding, you are not expected to use slides or other visual aids.

The audience, in terms of both size and familiarity with you, and the topic. If it’s a small, informal event, you will be able to use a less formal method. You might, for example, choose to give your audience a one-page handout, perhaps an infographic that summarises your key points, and talk them through it. A more formal event is likely to need slides.

Your experience in giving presentations. More experienced presenters will be more familiar with their own weak points, and able to tailor their preparation and style to suit. However, few people are able to give a presentation without notes. Even the most experienced speakers will usually have at least some form of notes to jog their memory and aid their presentation.

Your familiarity with the topic. As a general rule, the more you know about it, the less you will need to prepare in detail, and the more you can simply have an outline of what you want to say, with some brief reminders.

Your personal preferences. Some people prefer to ‘busk it’ (or ‘wing it’) and make up their presentation on the day, while others prefer detailed notes and outlines. You will need to know your own abilities and decide how best to make the presentation.  When you first start giving presentations you may feel more confident with more detailed notes. As you become more experienced you may find that you can deliver effectively with less.

Some Different Methods of Presentation

Presentation methods vary from the very formal to the very informal.

What method you choose is largely dictated by the occasion and its formality: very formal tends to go with a larger audience, whose members you do not know well. Your role is likely to be much more providing information, and much less about having a discussion about the information.

Form Follows Function

It’s not going to be possible, for instance, to present to 200 people from a chair as part of the group, because most of your audience will not see or hear you. You need to apply common sense to your choice of presentation method.

Audience Participation

While much of your presentation method will be dictated by the event, there is one area where you have pretty much free rein: audience interaction with you and with each other.

It is perfectly feasible, even in a large conference, to get your audience talking to each other, and then feeding back to you.

In fact, this can work very well, especially in a low-energy session such as the one immediately after lunch, because it gets everyone chatting and wakes them up. It works particularly well in a room set out ‘café-style’, with round tables, but it can also work in a conference hall.

The key is to decide on one or two key questions on which you’d welcome audience views, or on which audience views could improve your session. These questions will depend on your session, but it’s always more helpful to invite views on:

• Something that you haven’t yet decided; or
• Something that the audience is going to do themselves.

For example, you might ask people to talk to their neighbour and identify one thing that they could do to put your speech into action when they return to work and/or home. You can then ask four or five people to tell you about their action points.

You also have a choice over how you manage your text, in terms of notes. For more about this, see our page on Managing Your Notes in a Presentation .

The Importance of Iteration

You will probably find that deciding on the presentation method means that you need to change or amend your presentation.

For example, if you want to include some audience participation, you will need to include that in your slides, otherwise, you might well forget in the heat of the moment.

Fortunately, revisiting your presentation in light of decisions about how you will present is probably a good idea anyway. It will enable you to be confident that it will work in practice.

6 Things To Consider Before Choosing A Presentation Method

Your presentation method—that is, how you deliver a presentation—is just as important as organizing your material ahead of your presentation. How you deliver your message is a vital component of the message itself. Your goal is to engage your audience and compel them to listen and act on what you’re saying. For that reason, you do need to invest some time into selecting the best presentation method.

Presentation Methods Matter

We talk a lot about connecting with your listeners. That’s because there’s little value in giving a presentation if no one pays attention to what you’re saying. When you connect with your audience , you command their attention. They can’t help but listen to you, because you’ve sparked something within them that makes them want to hear what you have to say. And sometimes, what grabs their attention is not the words you’re speaking but how you deliver them.

What exactly do we mean by a “presentation method”? Well, consider the presentations you’ve given or the ones you’ve been witness to. And remember a presentation comes in many shapes in sizes: a business pitch; a church sermon; a stand-up comedy act—basically, just about any transfer of information between two or more people can be considered a presentation. And certainly, your pastor’s presentation method differs quite a bit from that of a corporate CEO.

Think Ahead

Assuming you’ve already plotted and organized your presentation, now is the time to consider how to deliver it. You may have aspirations of pumping the air full of rocking tunes before wowing your audience with show-stopping visuals, but wait a minute: Does the venue have the equipment for all that?

And so, as you begin to map out your presentation method, you’ll need to consider these:

• What’s the Occasion? —Every presentation is unique. Even if you’ve given the same talk a dozen times before, remember that while your message may be relevant in more than one situation, the occasion dictates your presentation method. A sales pitch to a familiar group of colleagues will have a different approach than a sales pitch to a board of directors. Match your presentation method accordingly.
• Who’s in The Audience —Again, it doesn’t matter how many times you’ve presented on the same topic, you have to tailor your presentation to the audience of the day. Are you familiar with the people in the group? What’s their knowledge on the subject? While a formal event to an audience with little knowledge of the topic may warrant slides, a small, informal group who has extensive knowledge of the subject may only require an infographic.
• Where Will I Be Presenting? Imagine preparing your presentation with the expectation of giving it in a small 12×12 office, only to show up and find out you’re giving it in a lecture hall. The delivery method you choose is relative to the room in which you will be presenting. Acoustics, range of view, and even the ambiance is different. Know ahead of time where exactly you’ll be presenting and plan accordingly.
• What Sound Equipment is Available? — A good presenter always tests his equipment before launching a presentation. Whether you’re just using a mic or require more sophisticated sound equipment, make sure you know what is available to you before choosing your presentation method and how to operate it.
• Will I Be Set Up for Visual Aids? You would expect most conference rooms in America are now equipped with audio-video equipment, but do a double-check on that before putting together a presentation that relies on Powerpoint slides.
• Is This an Interactive Presentation? — If you expect to involve your audience through audience participation, your presentation method needs to be selected accordingly. If you will be inviting audience members to share their own experiences or participate in role-playing games, you may want to go out into the audience or at least not remain on stage the entire time. Consider how you will be interacting with your audience before choosing an appropriate presentation method.

Leave Nothing to Chance

An effective presentation is carefully prepared based on where it’s happening, who’s in the audience, and your objectives. Your goal is to deliver a speech or presentation that will leave a favorable lasting impression, so be strategic in choosing a presentation method and do some investigation before you make your choice.

I once spoke to a man who was a key speaker at many events in his life. He was 72 at the time. He said the key to really presenting what you have to offer is being yourself and knowing how to speak to who you are presenting to. You don’t want to show a group of older adults tech heavy presentations that are fast just as you don’t want to use nothing but pictures to a younger audience.
