PhD programmes

When you apply for a phd programme in sweden, you’re actually applying for a job. yeah, you read that right. 👀.

phd in medicine sweden

“Do a master’s here – I’d say it’s a very good step to doing a PhD in Sweden. I did my master’s at Malmö University and now I’m doing a PhD at Lund University” – Sanjay, Malmö University. Photo: Oskar Omne

So that means – no tuition fees, no scholarships. But you’ll receive a monthly salary instead. Nice, eh? And that’s why available PhD positions are listed on a university’s job board.

How to apply for a PhD position? You’ll apply directly to the university.

Just so you know, there’s no centralised application process. And things like requirements and application dates? This kind of stuff is decided by each department. But we do know that you’ll need to have a master’s degree – in the same field of study – and a great level of English to apply for a PhD here. You might even need to be fluent in Swedish. But that’ll depend on the subject.

The Research School in Medical Science and other doctoral level courses

Introduction to the doctoral programme  .

Immediately after admission to the doctoral programme, the student participates in a compulsory introductory course module. The module is digital and available on the learning platform “Canvas”.  The PhD student also writes an individual reflection paper and discusses it with their supervisor. The supervisor then certifies that the PhD student and supervisor have discussed the contents of the reflection paper, on a certification form found here in the column to the right.

Research School in Medical Science

Upon admission to the doctoral programme, all students are admitted to the Research School in Medical Science, which comprises 13.5 credits. Students are allocated a place at the next research school that starts within a few months to a maximum of one year after admission. The research school is offered four to five times a year with 40 places per round. The language of instruction is English. The research school comprises nine course weeks spread out over approximately six months.

The research school includes the following courses (13.5 credits):

  • Introduction to Research Methodology, 3 hp/credits
  • Theory and practice of scientific communication, 1,5 hp/credits
  • Applied statistics I, 1,5 hp/credits
  • Research ethics, 3 hp/credits
  • Applied statistics II, 3 hp/credits
  • Oral communication, 1,5 hp/credits

The course requirements may vary depending on when you were admitted to the doctoral programme. You can find information about your programme in the General study plan.

Future start dates for the Research School in Medical Science:

Programme content

Uppsala University’s PhD programmes are comprised of courses and a dissertation in which students carry out a unique and significant individual research project. The project may result in either a monograph thesis, which is a cohesive scientific work, or a compilation thesis consisting of several scientific articles and a summary.

A PhD degree is equivalent to four years of full-time study; however, after two years of studies students can graduate with a licentiate degree.

Our PhD programmes give students the knowledge and skills to conduct independent research, a deep understanding of the subject area, and the ability to teach.

To be admitted as a doctoral student, candidates must:

  • fulfil the entry requirements stated in the announcement
  • possess good English language skills
  • have the ability to cope with the programme

Insurance for doctoral students with stipends

Uppsala University provides insurance cover for doctoral students whose studies are funded through a stipend. This insurance consists of three parts:

  • Sickness benefit
  • Parental benefit
  • Temporary parental benefit

International PhD students are also covered by Uppsala University’s group and personal insurance that provides accident insurance around the clock.

These insurance schemes are both managed by the Swedish Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet). Please note that illness, parental benefit or claiming of temporary parental benefit must be reported to [email protected] no later than on the second day of sick leave or parental leave.

Doctoral studies

Are you interested in learning more and deepening your knowledge of a particular field of study? Are you interested in contributing to the production of new knowledge? Why not look into doctoral studies at Umeå University?

Doctoral studies involve four years of full-time study, which include a number of courses and a doctoral thesis.

Besides acquiring in-depth knowledge of a field of study, you will also cultivate your critical and analytical thinking.

During your studies, you get to solve problems independently as you prepare for a professional career within academia, or the business or public sector.

Doctoral students at Umeå University are regarded as employees and also receive a salary and other standard benefits of employment. Instead of applying directly for a doctoral level programme, candidates must apply for an available doctoral position that are published on our Work with us site.

Requirements

To be accepted as a doctoral student you are required:

  • to fulfil the entrance qualifications for the subject in question, or
  • to show that you have other abilities that are necessary to complete the education.

If you are interested in taking on doctoral studies, you should first contact the department that conducts education and research in your field of interest.

Reappointment of E. John Wherry, PhD, as Chair of the Department of Systems Pharmacology and Translational Therapeutics

August 13, 2024

John E Wherry, PhD

Through the extensive review process, which included a comprehensive self-study, an internal committee review, and an external review by three international leaders in the fields of pharmacology and immunology, our collective understanding was reaffirmed: Dr. Wherry is widely recognized for his leadership of a department that is regarded as one of the top research programs in the country. A highly esteemed scientist, he has set a bold vision to expand the disciplines of focus within SPATT to include immunopharmacology.  The department has made substantial progress towards executing this vision with outstanding recruitment of faculty whose work encompasses different aspects of immunology, pharmacology, chemistry, and development of novel therapeutic approaches. Recruitment and investment in established programs and new technologies have advanced the field with impactful research and scholarship.

In addition to serving as Chair, Dr. Wherry is also Director of the UPenn Institute for Immunology and Immune Health (I 3 H) and the leader of the Colton Center for Autoimmunity at Penn , which joins centers at NYU, Yale and Tel Aviv (the Colton Consortium) in transforming the landscape of autoimmune disease research.

Dr. Wherry’s accomplishments and impact as a renowned scientist are known internationally and were recognized by election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2023. Dr. Wherry has been a pioneer in the field of T cell exhaustion, the mechanisms by which T cell responses are attenuated during chronic infections and cancer. He helped identify the role of the “checkpoint” molecule PD-1 and others that are now targeted for reinvigoration of exhausted T cells in cancer, and his work has defined the underlying molecular and epigenetic mechanisms of exhausted T cells. Dr. Wherry has over 340 publications (including recent exceptional papers in Science on JAK inhibition and in Cell on checkpoint blockade ), an H-Index of 135, and his publications have been cited over 100,000 times.

Lastly, the review included important recommendations for additional ways in which the Department can continue to build on its strengths and alignment with our strategic plan – Serving a Changing World .  We look forward to working with Dr. Wherry as he continues to connect and enhance the core foundations of pharmacology and immunology.  His many contributions to Penn Medicine – from various leadership roles to service to collaborations – enrich our community, and we are grateful that he has agreed to continue to serve as Chair of SPATT.  Please join us in congratulating Dr. Wherry on his reappointment.

Cahill Selected to be Director of Yale Psychiatry Residency Program

John Cahill, MD, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry, has been selected to be director of the Yale Psychiatry Residency Program.

Cahill was selected after a very competitive search process headed by a committee that considered input from inside and outside the department and Yale School of Medicine. His appointment must be approved by the Yale New Haven Health Graduate Medical Education Committee.

Cahill is well known within the Yale Department of Psychiatry as an accomplished and respected clinician, educator, and scientist. He completed his undergraduate and medical training at the University of Nottingham before earning a PhD in translational research methods in psychiatry at the University of Huddersfield.

After completing his psychiatry residency at Yale, he served as chief resident for education and completed research fellowships in psychopharmacology and in early intervention and public psychiatry.

Cahill is board certified in psychiatry, clinical informatics, and in addiction medicine. He joined the department faculty in 2015. Since joining the faculty, he has served as medical director of the Specialized Treatment for Early Psychosis (STEP) program, medical director of the Acute Services Division, and deputy medical director for informatics of the Connecticut Mental Health Center. Cahill will replace Richard Belitsky, MD, who has served as interim program director.

Dr. Sten Vermund Named Dean of USF Health College of Public Health

After seven and half years of dedicated service to the Yale School of Public Health, Dr. Sten H. Vermund, MD, PhD, will be joining the University of South Florida as dean of the USF Health College of Public Health effective January 1, 2025. The relocation also allows Dr. Vermund to be on-site as the newly elected president of the Global Virus Network, which recently moved its international headquarters to USF.

A former dean of YSPH (2017-2022) and the current Anna M.R. Lauder Professor of Public Health. Dr. Vermund also serves as a professor of pediatrics and a clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive services at the Yale School of Medicine, and is an internationally recognized infectious disease epidemiologist focused on diseases in resource-limited settings, especially HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections (HPV), and parasitic diseases.

Dr. Vermund's tenure as YSPH dean was marked by several historic gains. Under his leadership, YSPH experienced its largest jump in the U.S. News & World Report rankings in more than a decade. Dr. Vermund established the school’s Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, expanded the Office of Public Health Practice, was instrumental in developing the Yale Institute for Global Health in collaboration with the schools of nursing and medicine, and introduced YSPH’s widely popular Executive MPH degree program. His deanship was further notable for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, both within and outside of Yale. And it was under Dr. Vermund's stewardship that former Yale University President Peter Salovey, Provost Scott Strobel, and YSM Dean Nancy Brown announced our historic transition towards being a fully independent school at Yale – a transition that was fully realized on July 1 of this year.

At USF, Dr. Vermund will be dean of the USF College of Public Health, a senior associate vice president of USF Health, and a distinguished university health professor. In his role as president of the Global Virus Network (GVH), Dr. Vermund oversees a nonprofit coalition of human and animal virologists from more than 80 centers of excellence in 40 countries. The GVH works to advance knowledge about future pandemic threats, mitigate the spread of potential viruses, and develop drugs, vaccines, and treatments to combat them.
