Become a Change Maker by shaping and leading the Business Transformation your Industry needs

The acceleration of change is the signature of the 21 st  century. Business is the place where opportunities have the potential to become reality. Hence, Business transformation is at the heart of the World Transformation.

Business School Lausanne (BSL) has shaped the Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) to look beyond the success or innovation of a specific company.

The DBA program combines the wide spectrum and in-depth understanding of doctoral studies, with the realism and focus of field action.

A research starting in the field with outputs aimed for the field

The BSL DBA program is intended for those with previous managerial and leadership experience who wish to make a significant contribution to the enhancement of professional practice in the field of management. The process which will lead to this transformation will be undertaken via the critical review and the systematic application of appropriate theories and research to professional practice.

DBA graduates are expected to produce a significant Doctoral-level transdisciplinary study output that advances research in business and management fields and is relevant to be put in to practice.

The DBA thesis, based on the research that is carried out throughout the program, is the primary piece of work that will be assessed for the award of the actual Doctorate.

A program designed for professionals across the globe

The duration of the program is from three to six years, depending on if it is undertaken as a full-time or a part-time academic undertaking for the student. The BSL DBA program is essentially a distance-learning program. All seminars of BSL’s Doctoral School held in Lausanne are optional, even though highly recommended. The students who will attend will both acquire invaluable insights via face-to-face interaction with instructors while also gaining mutually beneficial contact with fellow Doctoral students from across the globe.

Elements such as the research question, the subject, the candidates’ network, their chosen research methodology along with factors such as the candidates’ proficiency in English and writing capacity can all have an influence on the duration of the program. Furthermore, we understand that due to the vocational nature of their chosen studies, the evolving professional obligations of the candidate can also affect the length of time that is required to achieve the DBA, hence the availability of less restrictive timescales.

Solving a problem: what a DBA is ultimately about!

If you are wondering whether a DBA journey is the right thing for you, you need to read what follows!

A DBA research and dissertation is an incredible experience that enables you to establish a bridge between two worlds: the world of business and the world of research.

How is that so?

At Business School Lausanne, we consider that every DBA research and dissertation aims to enable you to transform business while advancing academic research at the same time.

In other words, the objective of every DBA research lies within a transformative contribution to your industry on a two-fold level: the level of business and the level of academic production through research

BSL Signature Features

Studying at BSL comes with a number of advantages that you will not find with other business schools. Some of the outstanding features of studying at BSL include:

A Personalized approach Throughout the different phases of your Doctoral journey, you will not only receive personalized support from your appointed supervisor, but also from the BSL Doctoral School Team in helping you, at all stages of your research, identifying the right focus to keep.

Doctoral study programmes

At ETH Zurich, doctorates are not organised within an overall doctoral study programme in the way that students may be familiar with from other universities. Each doctoral student is free to select and assemble the components of their doctoral studies for him or herself. However, the departments do have the option of organising and offering their range of courses for doctoral studies in the form of doctoral programmes.

The Life Science Zurich Graduate School, for example, offers this kind of programme. There are 16 highly competitive doctoral programmes, run jointly by ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. The aim is to attract the most promising young scientists from across the world by offering a comprehensive and challenging education for doctoral students in biosciences.

Distance learning PhD Programmes in Switzerland

Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a federal parliamentary republic consisting of 26 cantons, with Bern as the seat of the federal authorities. Switzerland's independence and neutrality have long been honored by the major European powers. Switzerland is a peaceful, prosperous, and stable modern market economy with low unemployment.

The PhD is a doctoral degree, specifically called a "doctor of philosophy" degree. This is misleading because PhD holders are not necessarily philosophers (unless they earned their degree in philosophy!). That said, PhD recipients are able to engage in thought experiments, reason about problems, and solve problems in sophisticated ways.

Online or distance learning refers to the use of electronic media and information and communication technologies (ICT) in education. With online learning, one can access education at any time and from any location with an available internet connection.

FFHS Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences

The Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences is a federally recognized university of applied sciences that has been offering part-time Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs as well as continuing education since 1998. With over 20 years of distance-learning experience, it is the leading e-university in Switzerland and an alternative for students who want to combine their work and family obligations with their studies.

The Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences operates in four locations: Zurich, Basel, Bern, and Brig. It employs 140 staff and over 400 lecturers, who impart practically oriented specialist knowledge to approximately 2,500 students (as of 2020). In its four research institutes, the Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences conducts application-oriented research in web science , management & innovation , health , and e-learning in accordance with the performance mandate of the Swiss federal government.

Since 2004, the Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences has been affiliated with the University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) and is integrated into its overall strategy.

Since 2017, the Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences has appointed a UNESCO Chair in Personalized and Adaptive Distance Learning .

Degree programs

The Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences is the only university of applied sciences in Switzerland whose degree programs are all based on a blended-learning approach: Students can complete 80 percent of their studies via an online learning platform. Only about 20 percent are face-to-face classes at one of the four Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences campuses.

Combining online studies and face-to-face classes allow students to remain flexible and combine studying for a university degree with a job, family, and sports activities. The Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences offers a total of six Bachelor’s degree programs (Bachelor of Science) and one Master’s degree program (Master of Science).

Continuing Education

“Work 4.0” constantly requires new knowledge and skills. Whether technical, social, or psychological, they all call for networked thinking and the ability to acquire knowledge efficiently. The Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences specializes in imparting knowledge efficiently (allowing part-time study) and in ways that are practical and, for the most part, not restricted to a location. We offer over 70 continuing education courses related to business, technology, ICT, health, and e-education. Our lecturers are proven specialists in their respective fields with a solid scientific background.

They build on extensive practical experience from their ongoing professional activities. This allows them to continuously integrate trends and developments from the business world into their classes.

In addition to conducting application-oriented research, the Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences research institutes offer their expertise to the private and the public sectors and jointly develop new concepts with their partners.

Blended learning is the core competence of the Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences. The Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences supports partners who want to establish their own e-learning programs in a process that starts with an idea and progresses to include an e-learning platform as well as the development and delivery of content.

Research & Development

The Swiss Distance University of Applied Sciences conducts application-oriented research & development in web science, management and innovation, health, and e-learning. It closes the gap between science and industry through targeted knowledge and technology transfer. At the same time, it meets the federal government’s performance mandate while continuously integrating its findings into its study programs – whether in the form of special subjects, continuing education courses, or case studies.

Study in Switzerland

A great plus is the kind population, the great shops and economy, and the international atmosphere, where students and people from all over the world come in search of great education and living conditions.

We cannot stress enough how great your decision of studying in Switzerland is, but we can elaborate on some details and break some of the stereotypes of yodelling and shady banks where mobsters keep their money.

Why Study in Switzerland?

1. tuition fees are affordable.

Given the fact that Switzerland has one of the most advanced free market economies, it's quite surprising that tuition fees are relatively affordable. Both EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA students usually pay between 400 and 3,700 EUR per academic year.

Not spending a lot on your education is a great advantage because living costs in Switzerland are well above the European average.

2. Swiss universities are among the world's best

Institutions like Times Higher Education, TopUniversities, and US News release their global university rankings every year. And every year Swiss universities earn their places among the best educational institutions out there.

Swiss universities stand out by providing some of the best study programmes in Business, Tourism and Hospitality, Culinary Arts, and Engineering.

Have a look at this article about the best English-taught universities in Switzerland .

3. Explore multilingualism and cultural diversity

If you dream of becoming a polyglot one day and knowing a little bit about as many cultures as possible, Switzerland can help you fulfil this dream.

There are 4 official languages — German, French, Italian, and Romansh — and the Swiss society and people are very welcoming towards internationals from all over the world.

4. High salaries and low unemployment rates

High livings standards go hand in hand with high salaries — and this is so true in Switzerland. The country has a healthy economy, a stable society, and one of the best healthcare systems out there. Unemployment rates are also very low.

All in all, Switzerland is a great place to settle, especially after your graduation. You'll already be familiar with the language(s), lifestyle, and locals, which will make it so much easier to find your place and build a life you're proud of.

Read more about the  countries with the best work-life balance , Switzerland being one of them.

5. Travel and enjoy nature's beauty

Living in Switzerland isn't only about hard study, work, and a lot of money. It's also about travel, nature, and enjoying yourself. And there are certainly enough places where you can do that.

These are only a few of the popular destinations that attract tourists from all over the world, although, we must confess, the iconic mountains and peaks have already won our hearts: the Matterhorn, Interlaken, Lucerne, Lake Geneva, Chillon Castle, Lake Lugano and Ticino, the Rhine Falls, the Swiss National Park, etc.

Which universities to attend in Switzerland?

Switzerland has some amazing universities, with its education system being ranked very high, and international students flocking to its programmes like it’s the promised land.

In case you don’t know where to start, you could always check out these universities we recommend wholeheartedly:

  • University of St.Gallen (HSG)
  • Sustainability Management School (SUMAS)
  • Robert Kennedy College
  • Geneva Business School
  • EHL (Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne)
  • Swiss School of Higher Education

What is it like to study in Switzerland?

You will feel like home in Switzerland. Seeing as I’m not sure what your country of origin is, that’s a great assumption on my part, but I’m backed up by the international environment.

Students who share their studying abroad experience always applaud the people and the diverse market of nationalities the universities accommodate.

Also, the distances between the university, campus, library, and so forth, can be really small, considering the country and cities are tiny, but the spaces are beautiful and fit for students.

Another point in favour of Switzerland is that the universities here focus more on papers and thesis, the grade being awarded after considering your whole learning process, not just what courses you crammed in the night before.

What to study in Switzerland?

Switzerland is famous for the neutral, yet special position it holds in the EU. Seeing as they produce the best bankers and the best lawyers, it comes as no surprise that the best and most sought-after degrees in Switzerland are in fields such as:

  • Finance degrees in Switzerland
  • MBA degrees in Switzerland
  • International Law degrees in Switzerland
  • Mathematics degrees in Switzerland
  • International Business degrees in Switzerland

Where to study in Switzerland?

Switzerland doesn’t have a  de jure  capital, meaning that no city is recognised as the capital. However, the  de facto  city recognised as the governmental seat is Bern.

And, because Switzerland won’t make things easier for us, the largest city in the country is Zurich.

There’s not just only one good location. You can take your pick from the list below:

  • Study in Zürich
  • Study in Bern
  • Study in Lausanne

How to apply

As it stands, you simply have to check the website of the programme you chose and:

  • Complete the online application
  • Pay the application fee
  • Upload all the necessary documents before the deadline expires

Because each degree and university has its own requirements, you have to pay attention and check the list of documents carefully.

Usually, the documents required are:

  • A printed and signed copy of your application form
  • Two passport photos
  • A copy of your ID
  • Official academic transcripts, from each university you attended
  • High school diploma or your Bachelor’s degree
  • Language proficiency certificates for German, French, or English
  • Evidence you paid the application fee
  • Personal essay or motivation letter

You can also make sure you’re accepted to a university if you:

  • Show how you performed as a student, and be sure to know what your Grade Point Average (GPA) was during your studies.
  • Can increase your chances of going to Switzerland by being sure to apply to more than one university!

Helpful ways to make sure you qualify for a Swiss university

Take preparation courses.

These kinds of courses enable degree-seeking students to get an extra educational boost just before they start their Master’s degree or other post-graduate degree programmes.

Try a pre-M.B.A., pre-Law, or pre-Medicine programme, as well as any other foundation or preparation courses that will allow you to study in the degree programme of your choice.

Improve your English through an English-language prep course

If you’re attending a degree programme in Switzerland, you will need to prove that your language skills are good enough to participate in the classes and understand the lectures. These courses will also prepare you for any of the English-language tests that universities require.

English-language tests

Switzerland has three official languages: German, French, and Italian.

The language in which your degree will be taught depends on where you wish to apply to. In addition, most universities also offer a wide range of programmes taught in English.

The certificates of proficiency you will need to provide, depending on the language you wish to study, are:

  • For German: DSH, TestDaF, OSD, telc, and others
  • For French: DELF or DALF
  • For English: IELTS , TOEFL, PTE Academic

If you don’t hold a language certificate, you can take a language test at the university and they can decide if your level is sufficient for you to complete your studies.

This option is not available in all universities, so always check with the institution!

Living in Switzerland

Tuition fees in switzerland.

In Switzerland, both EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA students pay the same tuition fees at most public universities (with a few exceptions listed further below). For Bachelor's and Master's degrees, students pay between 400–3,700 EUR per year.

Private universities are much more expensive. Their tuition can go over 40,000 EUR per academic year. But not all study programmes cost that much; it depends on the discipline and the university.

Students who come to Switzerland on an exchange programme don’t pay any tuition fee. At universities from Fribourg, Lucerne, Neuchatel, St. Gallen, Zurich, and Lugano, you can encounter 2 different situations:

  • only non-EU/EEA students pay higher tuition
  • both EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA students pay higher tuition compared to local (Swiss) students

Accommodation, food and other expenses

Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe, but every penny is worth it, thanks to the high standard of living and the high average salaries. To live there as a student you need to budget around 1,300–1,700 EUR per month.

Here's a breakdown of the average living costs in Switzerland:

  • Rent: 400–800 EUR per month
  • Utilities: 220–250 EUR per month
  • Monthly transport pass: 74 EUR
  • 1 litre of milk: 1.45 EUR
  • Loaf of bread: 2.60 EUR
  • Meal at an inexpensive restaurant: 23 EUR

About Switzerland

Facts about switzerland.

Switzerland, also known as Confoederatio Helvetica (CH) in Latin, is famous for its neutral position throughout history. In the immortal words of Frank Liebkind, from “The Producers”: “I had nothing to do with the war! I didn't even know there was a war on! We lived at the back, near Switzerland. All we heard was yodelling.” The history behind that joke is the almost 500 years of independence of the Swiss; aside from Napoleon’s occupation, at the beginning of the 19th century, Switzerland was independent since 1499.

That’s one of the reasons why the Vatican is protected by the Swiss Guards, these men being the only ones allowed to serve foreign armies. That can be a very good thing, too, seeing how the Swiss are rather bad at the whole “military” thing: let’s not forget that, in 2007, Switzerland accidentally invaded Lichtenstein. Makes the time you forgot the milk on the stove feel rather small, when put into perspective.

Now, getting back to praising Switzerland.

Everybody can tell you that it’s really famous for its chocolate, cheese, banking system, watches, alpine areas, and, let’s not forget, that the flag is, also, a huge plus. Heh!

Also, Switzerland is the quintessence of a perfect destination for students. For instance:

  • The first convenience food was invented here, by Julius Maggi and Carl Knorr, in 1886. By convenience food, we mean the famous “just add water” cup of soup. So you could say the Swiss invented the broke student’s menu;
  • The APPP was founded here, APPP standing for the Anti-PowerPoint Party. It is exactly what you imagine: a bunch of politicians working to decrease the number of PowerPoints used in professional presentations, claiming that “Microsoft PowerPoint and its other software products are economically harmful”. Also, their motto? “Finally do something!”
  • Finally, the Swiss government mandated a program to provide every Swiss citizen a bomb shelter, making it one of the safest and readily equipped countries in the world.

Before we go, you should also know that Switzerland has a law that makes owning only one guinea pig illegal, so they wouldn’t get lonely. If this fact doesn’t make you happy, nothing will.

Recent international policies promote international university cooperation and student exchange between countries worldwide. High-quality study and PhD degrees are made more available to students in order to create a global educational network, achievable through student and staff mobility. Career and research oriented programmes support international student development.

University cooperation enables students study worldwide, for instance in Australia, Asia, Europe and the United States and provides ways of recognizing previous degrees. Different study options offer appropriate alternatives to students, depending on their preferred mode of study.

Many study programmes in Australia, Asia, Europe and North America are English-taught. The most popular international student destinations include the following countries: Australia, Belgium, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, the United States, and more. However, these are not the only countries offering English-taught education. The rest of the world is full of endless study choices, from highly ranked to smaller, more specialized, universities.

PhD (postgraduate) Degrees

If you want further education beyond the undergraduate level or if you want more personal development or a career in academia, you could obtain a PhD degree. PhD degrees are postgraduate programmes that usually follow a Master's, MPhil or MRes, but there might be additional requirements depending on the university. Students are required to do their own research in a chosen topic. With the help of a supervisor, you develop knowledge and analytical skills in a specific or multidisciplinary field and you carry out independent research. The duration of a PhD degree differs per country and institution. Sometimes your own research is accompanied by work for the department such as giving seminars or small group teaching.

PhD students are required to study on campus under close supervision, but there are universities that accept students enrolled into a part-time distance education PhD degree. Studying on campus can also be full-time as well as part-time, in which case the part-time variant is normally twice as long as the full-time study.

As such, Swiss School of Business Research is not beholden to regulations imposed by the Swiss Higher Education Act (HEdA) and not listed on Swissuniversities’ list of accredited higher education institutions therefore the School is free to provide higher education and confer private degrees, from bachelor’s to doctorate levels.

Validity of degrees issued by private institutions in Switzerland

“Validity of degrees issued by private institutions in Switzerland While higher education in Switzerland is primarily dispensed by public institutions, there are also many private ones. In Switzerland no prior authorisation is required in order to offer higher education courses, organise examinations or issue private degrees. In certain cases, however, the federal or cantonal authorities, depending on their respective area of authority, will supervise private institutions and/or authorise them to offer courses and issue degrees. Private institutions based in Switzerland that are not accredited under the HEdA may only issue private degrees. Such degrees: – may be used by the holder to carry out an unregulated profession; appreciation of the value of private degrees is left up to employers. Generally speaking, there are no international agreements protecting the value of private degrees; in all cases, it is up to the national authorities in the host country to decide whether to recognise foreign qualifications. Private institutions are able to legitimately carry out their activities in Switzerland by virtue of the principle of economic freedom.* SSBR is authorised by the Canton of Zurich for the provision of quality standards in adult education so the lessons comply with the cantonal regulations. The Canton of Zurich authorizes SSBR to issue bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees.

  • PhD study in Switzerland – 2024

With the highest number of patents in all European countries, there is no doubt that PhD study in Switzerland is highly sought after. Known for research and innovation, Switzerland welcomes PhD students from all around the world. If you decide to study a PhD in Switzerland, you’ll be a part of massive network of over 61,000 international students and get the opportunity to be a part of some world-renowned research projects.

Why study a PhD in Switzerland?

  • Emphasis on research – The first of many reasons to study in Switzerland is the highly competitive research sector. If you’re a PhD candidate at any of the three different types of universities , you will have the opportunity to contribute to some of the best research programmes in the world. Switzerland also has the highest number of Nobel Prize winners per capita, but, no pressure!
  • Tradition of excellence – Whether it be cheese, chocolate or education, the Swiss are known for a long-standing tradition of excellence. It is no shock that is it home to some of the best universities in the world like the ETH Zurich and the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, both of which are in the top 50 of the Times Higher Education global university rankings . With both traditional and structured PhDs, Switzerland produces graduates who are skilled, creative and innovative.
  • Multilingual education – There are four national languages in Switzerland: German, French, Italian and Romansh. Even though more and more courses are being offered in English, universities often offer courses in any of the national languages to help you with life outside the classroom!
  • Career opportunities – Your association with Switzerland does not have to end with your studies. You can choose from post-study work opportunities at one of the hundreds of multinational companies (like Nestle and Swatch) that have their offices in Switzerland.

How long does a PhD in Switzerland take?

On an average it takes 3-5 years to complete a Swisss PhD. However, traditional PhDs tend to be shorter whereas structured PhDs may last longer because of the additional training involved.

The academic year in Switzerland runs from September to May and is divided into two teaching semesters (September to December and February to May/June). PhD research may continue outside these periods, but any formal training within your programme will usually take place in term time.

Supervision during your PhD in Switzerland

You’ll be assigned at least one academic supervisor during your PhD. This may be the principal investigator for the laboratory or research group you work within, or an experienced academic with expertise in your general field. Your supervisor will act as a mentor for your project and will work with you to guide and support your research.

Some Swiss PhD programmes involve second or multiple supervisors. This is especially likely if you are following a structured PhD, with inputs from more than one institution. Each supervisor will normally have a specific role to play in your project, sometimes focussing on particular topic areas or on providing overall mentoring and pastoral support at your university.

How are PhDs in Switzerland assessed?

The main outcome for your PhD will be the doctoral thesis you write up and submit at the end of your research. This must represent a substantial original contribution to your academic subject. It should offer new knowledge and / or data that, in principle at least, is worth publishing for other scholars and researchers to use.

Your thesis will be assessed through an oral examination or defence . In Switzerland, this takes place in a public setting, rather than as a private viva voce exam (such as that used in the UK). You will discuss your PhD in front of a panel of experts, including at least one external examiner from outside your university. The panel will ask questions about your research and conclusions and may sometimes ask you to provide a short presentation of your main findings.

Structured PhDs may also involve some smaller assessments during your doctorate, such as coursework and exams for training modules. You will need to pass these in order to continue with your programme, but they won’t determine the final ‘grade’ for your PhD degree.

However, your life as a PhD student in Switzerland will not be limited to your research. We have a complete guide on living in Switzerland as an international student which has information on everything from living costs to getting around the country.

Study in Switzerland

Switzerland has one of the most advanced free-market economies, which is reflected in the high living standards and the satisfaction of people living here. In terms of higher education, Swiss universities are constantly ranked among the best in Europe, and they shine in areas like Business, Tourism, Culinary Arts, and Engineering. When compared to Western universities, tuition fees in Switzerland are affordable, and all studies — especially PhD programmes — are world-class. You’ll have the opportunity to develop in a multilingual environment and try learning international languages like German, French, or Italian. Distance Learning

Distance or online learning is a mode of study that allows students to study most or all of a course without attending at a campus-based institution. Distance can refer to both material and interaction. Distance learning provides access to learning when the source of information and the learners are separated by time and distance, or both.

During this type of education students communicate with the faculty and other students via e-mail, electronic forums, videoconferencing, chat rooms, bulletin boards, instant messaging and other forms of computer-based interaction.

The programmes often include a online training system and tools to produce a virtual classroom. The tuition fees for distance learning vary from institution to programme to country. It is certain that the student saves expenses related to accommodation and transportation, because you can maintain your current living expenses. Distance learning is also a great solution for people that already have a job, and still want or need further education.
