How to assign clients to a site in Configuration Manager

  • 4 contributors

Applies to: Configuration Manager (current branch)

After you install the Configuration Manager client, before you can manage the client, it needs to join a Configuration Manager primary site. The site that a client joins is called its assigned site . You can't assign a client to a central administration site or a secondary site.

The assignment process happens after you successfully install the client and it determines which site manages the computer. You can either directly assign the client to a site, or use automatic site assignment. With automatic assignment, the client finds an appropriate site based on its current network location. The client may assign to a fallback site, if you configure it for the hierarchy.

Always assign clients to sites running the same version of Configuration Manager. Avoid assigning a client from a later release to a site on an earlier release. If necessary, update the primary site to the same Configuration Manager version that you use for the clients.

After the client assigns to a site, it remains assigned to that site, even if it changes its IP address or roams to another site. Only an administrator can manually assign the client to another site or remove the client assignment.

An exception to a client remaining assigned to a site is if you assign the client on a Windows Embedded device with write filters enabled. If you don't first disable write filters before you assign the client, the site assignment status of the client reverts to its original state when the device next restarts. For example, if you configure the client for automatic site assignment, it reassigns on startup and might assign to a different site. If the client requires manual site assignment, you have to manually reassign it before you can manage it.

To avoid this behavior, disable the write filters before you assign the client on embedded devices. Then enable the write filters after you have verified that site assignment was successful.

If assignment fails, the client remains installed, but you can't manage it. A client is considered unmanaged when it's installed but not assigned to a site. It's also unmanaged when it's assigned to a site but it can't communicate with a management point.

Manual site assignment

You can manually assign client computers to a site by using the following two methods:

Use a client installation property that specifies the site code. For more information, see Client installation properties - SMSSITECODE .

In the Windows Control Panel for Configuration Manager , specify the site code.

If you manually assign a client to a site code that doesn't exist, the site assignment fails.

Automatic site assignment

Automatic site assignment typically happens during client deployment. To manually start automatic site assignment, select Find Site on the Advanced tab of the Configuration Manager control panel. The Configuration Manager client compares its network location with the boundaries for the hierarchy. When the network location of the client falls within a boundary group you enabled for site assignment, or the hierarchy is configured for a fallback site, the client is automatically assigned to that site. This behavior lets clients easily assign to a site and you don't have to specify a site code.

If a client computer has multiple network adapters and multiple IP addresses, the IP address used to evaluate client site assignment is assigned randomly.

For more information about how to configure boundary groups for site assignment, see Define site boundaries and boundary groups .

Configuration Manager clients that use automatic site assignment attempt to find site boundary groups that you publish to Active Directory Domain Services. If this process fails, clients can get boundary group information from a management point. This process can fail if you don't extend the Active Directory schema for Configuration Manager, or clients are workgroup computers.

When you install the client, you can specify a management point for it to use, or the client can locate a management point automatically. For more information, see How clients find site resources and services .

If the client can't find a site in a boundary group for its network location, and the hierarchy doesn't have a fallback site, the client retries every 10 minutes. It repeats this process until it assigns to a site.

Configuration Manager clients can't automatically assign to a site if any of the following conditions apply:

They are currently assigned to a site.

They are on the internet or configured as internet-only clients.

Their network location doesn't fall within one of the boundary groups in the hierarchy, and there's no fallback site.

If any of these conditions apply, you have to manually assign the client.

Check site compatibility

After a client has found its assigned site, the site checks the version of the Configuration Manager client and OS. This check is to make sure that the site can manage the client. For example, a current branch site can't manage a Configuration Manager 2007 client, or a client that runs Windows 2000.

If you try to assign a client that runs a legacy OS version, site assignment fails. When you assign a Configuration Manager 2007 client or a System Center 2012 Configuration Manager client to a current branch site, assignment succeeds to support automatic client upgrade. However, until you upgrade the older generation clients, you can't manage it.

To support the site assignment of a Configuration Manager 2007 or a System Center 2012 Configuration Manager client to a current branch site, configure automatic client upgrade for the hierarchy. For more information, see the How to upgrade clients for Windows computers .

Configuration Manager also checks that you've assigned the current branch client to a site that supports it.

The site compatibility check requires one of the following conditions:

The client can access site information published to Active Directory Domain Services.

The client can communicate with a management point in the site.

If the site compatibility check fails to finish successfully, the site assignment fails. The client remains unmanaged until the site compatibility check runs again and succeeds.

An exception to this site compatibility check is when you configure a client for an internet-based management point. In this case, Configuration Manager doesn't check site compatibility. If you assign clients to a site that contains internet-based site systems, and you specify an internet-based management point, make sure that you assign the client to the correct site.

Scenarios for assignment of legacy clients

The following scenarios might occur during migration from previous versions of Configuration Manager:

You use automatic site assignment and boundaries overlap between versions of Configuration Manager

In this case, the client automatically tries to find a current branch site.

The client first checks Active Directory Domain Services. If it finds a current branch site published, site assignment succeeds. If this check fails, the client then checks for site information from its assigned management point.

You can specify an initial management point for the client during client installation. For more information, see Client installation properties - SMSMP .

If both these methods fail, site assignment fails. You need to manually assign the client.

Accidental manual assignment to a legacy site version

For example, you assign a current branch client with a specific site code, and mistakenly specify a site code for a version of Configuration Manager earlier than System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager.

In this case, site assignment fails. Manually reassign the client to a current branch site.

Locate a management point

After the client assigns to a site, it then tries to locate a management point. This process in itself can be complex, depending upon the situation. For more information about how the client locates management points and other site resources, see How clients find site resources and services .

Download site settings

After the client finds a management point, it needs to get client-related site settings. These settings include:

  • The client certificate selection criteria
  • Whether to use a certificate revocation list
  • The client request port numbers

The client continues to check these settings on a periodic basis.

Clients get these settings from one of the following methods:

If the client used Active Directory Domain Services for its site compatibility check, it downloads these settings for its assigned site from the domain.

When clients can't get site settings from Active Directory, they download them from the management point.

You specify the settings during client installation. For more information, see About client installation properties .

Download client settings

All clients download the default client settings policy and any applicable custom client settings policies. For more information, see About client settings .

Software Center relies on these client configuration policies. It notifies users that it can't run until the client downloads the configuration information. Depending on the client settings that you configure, the initial download of client settings might take a while. Some client management tasks might not run until this process is complete.

Verify site assignment

You can verify site assignment success by any of the following methods:

For clients on Windows computers, use the Configuration Manager control panel. Verify that it shows the correct site code on the Site tab.

In the Configuration Manager console, go to the Assets and Compliance workspace, and select the Devices node. Verify that the computer shows Yes in the Client column and the correct primary site code in the Site Code column.

Use the reports for client assignment .

Use the LocationServices.log file on the client.

Roaming to other sites

A client on the internal network is assigned to a primary site. You change the client computer's network location. It's now in a boundary group for another site. In this scenario, the client is roaming in the other site. When this site is a secondary site for the client's assigned site, the client can use a management point in the secondary site to download policy and upload data. This behavior avoids sending this data over a potentially slow network. If the client roams into the boundary of another primary site, it still uses a management point in its assigned site to download policy and upload data.

Clients that roam to other sites can always use management points in other sites for content location requests . Management points in the current site can give clients a list of distribution points that have the requested content.

When you configure clients for internet-only client management, they only communicate with management points in their assigned site. These clients never communicate with management points in secondary sites or with management points in other primary sites. This behavior is the same for macOS and on-premises MDM devices that you enroll to Configuration Manager.

Rays Designate Utility Man for Assignment, Activate Walls

T he Tampa Bay Rays have designated Harold Ramírez for assignment on Friday, per Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Florida . His spot on the team will go to infielder Taylor Walls , who returns from the 60-day injured list. Ramírez, 29, began the season as the primary designated hitter , though he recently had been relegated to the small side of the platoon. Ramírez has never provided much power, although he did hit .306 in 242 games over the previous two seasons. Through 169 plate appearances in 2024, he’s batting .268 with four extra-base hits. He could garner some interest on the waiver wire.

Harold Ramírez DFA’d by Tampa Bay

Ramírez’s .268 average is good, but his free-swinging approach has produced fewer walks at 1.8 percent, leading to a dismal .284 OBP. He’s seen a decline in power with one home run and three doubles in 169 plate appearances. However, Ramírez is hitting .310 against left-handed pitchers this season in 58 plate appearances and is slugging only .379 against them. He’s an ideal option for a short-side platoon singles hitter with limited defensive value. More importantly, Ramírez lacks minor league options.

The Rays Chose Walls or Ramírez

The Rays parted with Ramírez for Walls and his versatile, strong defensive abilities on the roster. There’s also Amed Rosario who’s hitting quite well in an infield/outfield role and Jonny DeLuca offering more defensive value than Ramírez. Rosario, DeLuca, Walls and catcher Alex Jackson will be the Rays’ bench group for now. Ramírez was the odd man out due to DeLuca and Richie Palacios , who the Rays acquired in the Tyler Glasnow trade. Palacio is hitting .262/.335/.369 and his versatility has given the Rays to rotate players through the DH spot.

Despite Ramírez’s defensive limitations and quality results at the plate, it’s unlikely any potential trade partner would take on the remainder of his contract. Between his club control through 2025 and $3.8 million salary, the Rays could pull off a trade if they’re willing to pay down some of the money still owed to Ramírez. If Ramírez does reach waivers, he can reject an outright assignment for free agency while retaining his entire salary.

If Ramírez Hits Free Agency

Ramírez could go in that direction, potentially attracting teams to bring him on board. He’s a lifetime .322/.357/.455 hitter against left-handers and has control for next season. Ramírez would be paid the prorated league minimum for any time spent on his new club’s roster. The Rays will either trade Ramírez or place him on waivers in the coming days.

The T20 World Cup on display at the stadium site in March this year

New York's beautiful monster: how a cricket venue was created from scratch

In Eisenhower Park on the outskirts of the city, a stadium has come up in a race against the clock

I t was in August of 2023 that Don Lockerbie started to get anxious. The ICC had tasked him, a former chief executive of the United States Cricket Association, now venue development officer for the 2024 men's T20 World Cup, to find a suitable venue in New York that could host matches in the marquee event.

Lockerbie, a native New Yorker, had already fished around the obvious venues, including Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, which has 12 existing cricket pitches. New York City mayor Eric Adams was keen on Van Cortlandt Park as a favourable venue, but the locals strongly opposed the project .

In November 2022 the ICC's head of events, Chris Tetley , rang Lockerbie to shortlist potential venues in the US. Both men had previously worked together on the 2007 ODI World Cup, which was held in the West Indies. Lockerbie was the chief commercial officer and venue development officer for that tournament. He has also been involved with the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA, six Olympics, and is managing director at the Parker Company, a hospitality procurement firm.

"The question was, well, how many venues in the United States?" he said about that initial chat with the ICC. Florida and Grand Prairie in Dallas, the two other venues that will host four World Cup matches each , were "relatively small". "So [we spoke about having] maybe one major, larger venue that could really create a wow factor, you know, similar to what Major League Soccer would have done after the 1994 FIFA World Cup."

Eisenhower Park Stadium comes up

Given the International Olympics Committee has added cricket to the list of sports for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics , Lockerbie said that city was the first big centre considered. In December 2022 he visited Woodley Park in Van Nuys, California, one of the oldest cricket venues in the country. The plan was to create a modular cricket stadium which could accommodate roughly up to 25,000 seats and which could also serve as a potential venue come the LA Olympics.

That wasn't to be, though. Los Angeles is on the west coast, which is 12 and a half hours behind India, the sport's biggest market. But the bigger stumbling blocks, Lockerbie said, proved to be clearances. The park authorities required an environmental impact study that would take more than two years to complete. After reviewing Woodley Park for nearly four months, Lockerbie moved on.

When New York's Van Cortlandt Park didn't work out either, he was about to give up. Then, around August 20 last year, he got a call from John Sulinski, from the LandTek Group, which has been involved in building sporting fields for the New York Yankees, the New York Mets, and Chase Stadium, which hosts Inter Miami FC.

"John's from Long Island," Lockerbie said. "He told me: 'There's a piece of ground in a park that I think you guys should look at. It's got the right size. And more importantly, it has the right political interest. I think this is a go.'" That piece of ground was located in verdant Eisenhower Park in Nassau County, Long Island , just outside New York City.

The ICC made a formal approach to the county in August last year. The county executive, Bruce Bakeman, opened the doors to Lockerbie and the ICC in a call on Labor Day weekend, September 4.

"Boy did it work fast," Lockerbie said with a big smile. "They were immediately interested. They understood the ramifications of a World Cup. They liked the idea of being outside of Manhattan and taking it on themselves.

"This is one of those impossible projects. They made it less impossible because they were able to work through all the machinations to give us the legal right to build a stadium in their park."

On November 17 last year, the ICC formally signed a contract with Nassau County to host eight matches of the World Cup.

A modular stadium Eisenhower Park is 900-plus acres of land, a little bigger than Central Park in New York. It houses three golf courses, numerous football pitches, baseball, basketball and tennis courts, an Olympic-size indoor swimming pool, ice hockey rinks, an amphitheater, lakes, and a five-star restaurant, which Lockerbie says the ICC will host sponsors and VIP guests at.

The cricket pitch, which was essentially a strip meant for recreational games, was originally part of a 19-acre section within the main park that "was not very fancy", Lockerbie said. "It did not have drainage. It did not have good irrigation. It was not a professionally built field. And it was also used for parking by people coming to the amphitheatre for shows. It was an afterthought kind of field in a county that has probably a hundred parks."

Eventually the area the ICC chose for the Nassau County International Stadium will expand to 42 acres to accommodate various operational departments, including broadcast, parking and security.

Work on the site started on January 8 this year, and actual construction on February 18, with a little over a hundred days to go before the first World Cup warm-up match at the ground on June 1. Populous, a globally renowned architecture and design firm, was hired to plan the stadium. Arena Americas and Alchemy International, companies that provide infrastructure for international sporting events like the Olympics, FIFA World Cups, Formula One and PGA Golf, were also brought on board.

While temporary stands have been put in place elsewhere before, like the grandstand at Old Trafford, Eisenhower Park will be the first international cricket ground to be completely modular. The stands at the new stadium will be in six sections of two tiers each, and six single-tiered sections.

A modular stadium is made mostly of steel and aluminium, as opposed to the concrete structures at normal cricket venues, erected in a short period of time, and is customisable. The ICC decided to adopt the pop-up concept for the venue. This has been regularly used in Formula One, golf, and even the Olympics. Tetley said that part of the infrastructure deployed in the construction of stands at Eisenhower Park will come from the Las Vegas Grand Prix and will be moved back after the World Cup.

The pitches: from Adelaide via Florida The tight deadline meant that the ICC had look for a turnkey solution for the pitches at the new stadium. Luckily there didn't need to be too much research into options because cricket has been played successfully for over a decade on drop-in pitches in Australia and New Zealand.

In June 2023, even as Lockerbie was trying to zero in on the big venue he wanted in the USA, the ICC sounded out Adelaide Oval Turf Solutions in Australia, which specialises in making drop-in pitches. Damian Hough, the head curator at Adelaide Oval, and the head of the Grounds team at the company, says his firm readily accepted the ICC's proposal.

Hough said he needed a local hand to assist in the project, providing knowledge on the soil type and grass variety that would be best suited for the pitches. Lockerbie put Hough in contact with Sulinski of LandTek, which had experience in preparing fields for various sports in the US. Hough also involved Dave Agnew, a fellow Australian, who is a curator at the Dallas venue.

By the end of September Hough's team got the ICC's approval to build six trays in Adelaide, which then were transported to the port of Savannah in Georgia, from where they were moved by road further south to LandTek's plant in Florida in December. All ten pitches - four that are now in the middle of Eisenhower Park stadium and six practice pitches on a turf field near to the main ground - were grown in that facility, south of Palm Beach.

"What we really like with the trays is, it's truly a modular system which streamlines everything from the costing to logistics," Hough said in May from New York. A tray is essentially a steel frame encasing an actual pitch, enabling pitches to be prepared in weather-friendly conditions and transported to the venue where the pitch will be laid. "The trays can be put into a container built at home [Adelaide] and shipped anywhere in the world. In this case they ended up in Savannah, then in Boynton Beach.

"Then there was the process of bolting the trays together, putting the matting in the bottom, and then the slow process of building the pitches, which comprises installation of the clay in layers and consolidating the layers. It was a really tight and short time frame between building them and using them. It was a five-month process."

Hough said that cricket strips usually need high clay content to facilitate good pace and bounce. On Agnew's recommendation, he used the local BlackStick soil variety for the New York pitches. BlackStick has high clay content, over 60%, and Hough said it is similar to that at Adelaide Oval, which made him feel at home with it. For the grass, after discussions with LandTek and others, Bermuda grass was unanimously picked.

"We knew the pitches weren't arriving [in the US] till early December," Hough said. "And we knew that early December in New York is freezing cold. So we couldn't grow the pitches in New York. [We were] relying on LandTek's experience and understanding of the environment. It started with 'Where's your warmest climate?' That's down in Florida. I sort of relate Florida to a Queensland sort of environment in our winter."

Hough says once the turf was in, he flew to Florida in March to do some "intense" rolling along with testing things like the root depth of the grass and the structure of the pitches and how compact each layer was.

In April the trays with the pitches in them were transported from Florida to New York by road. DP World, a global supply-chain and logistics company, which is also one of the ICC's sponsors, deployed 22 trucks over the two-day journey covering about 1200 miles.

Both Hough and Lockerbie heaved a sigh of relief when the pitches were put in place at Eisenhower Park. "This was the biggest fear I had for the entire project," Lockerbie said. "Because if that project failed - moving the wickets to New York and putting them in - then I might as well not finish the stadium, because you can't play on bad wickets."

Hough says the New York job is up there on the podium for him in terms of the most challenging projects he has undertaken, alongside getting Adelaide Oval ready for the cricket's first day-night Test in 2015, five days after the venue had hosted an AC/DC concert, and hosting the 2013 Ashes Test immediately after the venue had tried drop-in pitches for the first time its 140-plus year old existence.

In media interactions in recent months, Hough stayed away from predicting the nature of the pitches and scores at the newly minted venue. "Our ambition is to produce good-quality pitches - you know, minimal spin, minimal seam, ball coming onto the bat, and let the players play the shots," he said on a call organised by the ICC at the end of April.

No white elephants here Eisenhower Park is not a "token-sized" playing field, Tetley said on a media call earlier in May. The playing area is as big as the Gabba or The Oval or the Wankhede, he noted. From the middle of the square the boundary is roughly 68 metres to east and west and 61 metres to north and south.

Unlike other, immobile, stadia that sometimes become ghostly shells after global sporting events like World Cups and Olympics, the ICC is optimistic the Eisenhower Park ground will be used by USA Cricket, including for MLC, as well as by Nassau county. Might this project prove to be a beacon in some ways for cricket in the USA?

Lockerbie is bullish. "The beautiful piece of this is that as MLC grows, I've urged their ownership group that they should be building [scalable] stadiums. They can be 7000-12,000 seats, with an eye to expand for big events. If the World Cup ever comes back to the United States and all the venues are in the United States, like FIFA would do, then there's no problem, if we design it correctly now, to go from a permanent 10,000 seat to a 20,000-25,000 seat stadium as needed.

"What we're showing everybody is that, if F1 can do it and golf does it, and you have triple-decker suites and hospitality sections, or you have 40-row grandstand sections that can be built in a hundred days, honestly, cricket could expand its horizons and build these type of venues in iconic locations everywhere around the world."

Lockerbie said Under-19 World Cups in future could, instead of being hosted in big cricket stadiums with sparse crowds, be held at modular stadiums that are not so expensive to build, in locations where they could attract larger numbers. "That's what golf does every week," he said. "You know, they're there, they build for a bunch of weeks and then they're gone. In Miami, you have tennis a few weeks before and then the Formula One comes down and then it's [American] football season. Las Vegas is the same. We just have to learn how the other sports have done the impossible."

On June 9, the eyes of the cricketing world will be on New York. In addition to the 34,000 fans at the venue, several hundred million will be watching India vs Pakistan, one of the most watched events globally, ranked alongside the 100-metres athletics final in the Olympics and the Superbowl in the USA.

Creating the New York venue is among the most ambitious projects the ICC has undertaken. Tetley said on media calls that organising the World Cup successfully in the USA would help the ICC at the LA Olympics, where cricket will return for the first time since the 1904 Games.

Lockerbie said there will be a lot of scrutiny but that people ought to understand what the ICC, his team, and Hough have managed to create in a race against time.

"I was talking to the PGA [golf] tour person who recently came to see Eisenhower Park. This gentleman is in charge of building all the grandstands and the tents and the hospitality and the press boxes. And he gets two to four years to plan for each of the PGA tour events. They know already what they are doing for the Ryder Cup in 2028. We have had five, six months."

"My team's been responsible for the bones of this project. Now comes the soul: that's the fans, that's the players, that's the drums, the DJs, the pyro. That's folks being wowed by what they see and feeling passionate about the sport."

Looking back to September 2023, Lockerbie could not believe he was sitting in front of a fully ready cricket venue in Eisenhower Park. "We almost lost New York," he said. "We almost didn't have this venue. And everybody thought that all we were going to do was put a rope around an existing strip and some small bleachers.

"You can see behind me that this picture is from two days ago. It's pretty significant. It's a beautiful monster, I call it."

What ‘house of the dragon’ boss ryan condal learned when he took on tv’s most stressful assignment.

Since he became the sole showrunner of the 'Game of Thrones' spinoff, the writer has been managing intense anxiety while shepherding one of the most valuable franchises in the world.

Ryan Condal was photographed May 23 in London.

When Ryan Condal decamped for the U.K. in 2020 to begin work on a Game of Thrones spinoff, it hadn’t occurred to the screenwriter that he, his wife and their two young children wouldn’t return to Los Angeles anytime soon. “It was about two years later, when the show came out and everybody watched it, that I finally thought, ‘Oh, OK, we’re going to be here for a while,’ ” he says.

The New Jersey native, who initially made a living shilling pharmaceuticals, is still a fan at heart. That helped him earn the approval of Game of Thrones source material author George R.R. Martin and the confidence from HBO to let him produce a second spinoff ( A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms ). But being the steward of one of TV’s biggest properties, as Condal’s the first to admit, is a hell of a lot of work.

You’ve worked over 5,000 miles from your corporate bosses for four years now. Is that space from Hollywood a good or bad thing?

It certainly has its benefits, being physically removed. But there’s this weird thing where I don’t feel like I work in Hollywood at times. It’s been five years since I’ve pitched something other than a season or an episode of this show. It’s like I’ve been sent off on an embassy assignment.

That’s got to be odd for someone who once had a reputation for being a pitch machine.

Was that early approach a byproduct of how you came to work in the industry? You first worked in marketing and advertising for big pharma. Quite a pivot!

I always wanted to be a screenwriter, but I was a safe and conservative person. I sold my first spec and didn’t tell anybody, just kept going to my day job and writing on nights and weekends. It wasn’t until I booked my third studio gig that I finally fessed up to this double life. I didn’t want to let anybody down, but I showed [my bosses] articles about the deals, and they were like, “Wait, what? This is amazing.”

How does that safe and conservative approach manifest in the way you work now?

Oh, lots of anxiety. ( Laughs .) I’ve learned to channel it, make it useful for me, as a sort of reverse procrastination. Maybe we should call it “precrastination”? It’s a good skill set for a showrunner: looking far down the road, envisioning a possible note that might come and having three ways out of it. Having worked in corporate America, it was not an alien experience for me to be one creative cog in a collective that’s trying to make something for a corporate master. You pitch your ideas, defend them and sometimes watch them get crushed to death.

I’ve seen you refer to this as the “most stressful job” you’ve had. So, what makes you sign on to produce a second series of this scale?

In your own self-assessment, what do you think you did well and not so well in the first season?

I’m very proud of season one, but there are things that I wish we had more time to work on in postproduction.

One criticism was the lighting.

Oh, for sure. We went into season two very conscious of that feedback. Season two is much more in line with my particular aesthetic and what I think the show should look like. It’s not a massive difference, but I don’t anticipate getting the “it’s too dark” note again.

You co-ran the first season with the director Miguel Sapochnik. What’s your take on his exit, and were you ready to go it alone?

It was my suspicion that Miguel was going to do one season and probably be done. He’d done the original Game of Thrones . He climbed that mountain, and I don’t think he had anything left to prove. So while I was prepared for it, it was an adjustment. But it was something that I think I was ready to take on.

How does the pressure shift between seasons one and two?

You’ve been attached to a lot of big projects that never got made. If you could take the defibrillator paddles to one, which would it be?

Paradise Lost . I developed it with Alex Proyas, director of The Crow , for Legendary [which pulled the plug on it in 2012]. We were in Sydney for eight weeks of prep and preproduction, Bradley Cooper was going to star, and it just fell apart. It was too expensive, the VFX people filed Chapter 11 or whatever, all these business reasons. It was my most devastating moment as a writer because I thought the train had left the station. But it’s when I realized that I’m responsible for my own happiness and sense of worth.

As a fan of many things, what IP do you most want to adapt?

I love Hellboy . Very simply, Hellboy is an X-File who investigates X-Files. He’s a paranormal detective. And I like the Guillermo del Toro movies, but it’s one of those properties that’s suited very well to episodic TV because there is a monster of the week in the best way. It would be a great change of pace from what I’m doing now.

We’ve talked a lot about pressure. What do you do to de-stress?

SCORE FIRST = PRESSURE:

New York’s Mets , coming off a dispiriting 3-7 homestand, took three straight games from Washington’s Nationals in the nation’s capital this week, capping things off with a 9-1 win Wednesday afternoon, in the rain-delayed series finale.

Davey Martinez’s ballclub fell behind early in each game, and dropped all three at home, coming off a 4-3 road trip to Atlanta and Cleveland.

“Rough series, right?” Martinez said late on Wednesday.

“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve got another tough team [the Braves] coming in,” for four in Nationals Park. “We’ve got to be ready to play tomorrow. We fell behind in all three of these games, and it’s tough playing from behind. We try to make comebacks and we fall short.

“Today, it, we just — we hit some balls hard, we just couldn’t get nothing. Patrick [Corbin], I thought threw — he had four balls that were left up. And he paid the price for it. But we got to forget about this series and come back and start playing strong, good baseball. And try to get that lead early.”

Corbin gave up two runs through five, then gave up back-to-back home runs in the first two at-bats in the sixth, and a double and one-out single before he was lifted from the mound in what ended up a 5 1 ⁄ 3 -inning, seven hit, three-homer, six earned run outing in which he went up to 77 pitches, 51 strikes.

“Maybe the third time through, pitches were elevated just a little bit,” Corbin said after the outing, as quoted by MASN’s Mark Zuckerman . “We got ahead pretty well today, and then just a couple pitches there late that kind of separated the lead for them.”

The home team managed just seven hits, and one run, off Luis Severino, who struck out four in eight innings without allowing a walk.

Martinez said he thought his club did put together some good-bats, and hit a few balls hard, but it just wasn’t their night.

“Early on, I think we lined out five or six times. We were on the fastball,” he explained.

“We just couldn’t show nothing for it. I don’t mind those at-bats. But we got to start getting things going, relax a little bit. We just got to relax. We get guys on base, and all of a sudden guys are [trying] to hit home runs. Just stay with the plan, try to hit the ball in the gap, and let’s start scoring some runs early.”

Lindor DRILLED this one pic.twitter.com/RgJCXzs4D9 — New York Mets (@Mets) June 5, 2024

“We got to keep fighting,” Martinez said of his club battling in their at-bats, and swinging at strikes. “Like I said, nobody is going to feel sorry for us, we got to keep pushing every day.

“Every day is a different day,” he added. “That’s what I love about this game, we get to come back tomorrow and do it again. The results could be different, but we got to play hard.

“Nobody is going to give us anything. They know that. Those guys know that, and you can see they keep fighting, but come back tomorrow and try to score early.

“The key is to try to put the pressure on the other team right from the get-go, if we can do that, good things happen.”

JOSIAH GRAY TO FREDERICKSBURG FOR REHAB START:

“Jojo is going on a rehab assignment, so he’ll begin his climb back to the big leagues,” Nats’ GM and President of Baseball Ops Mike Rizzo told Audacy’s The Sports Junkies on 106.7 the FAN on Wednesday morning.

A few hours later, manager Davey Martinez provided some details about what’s next for the 26-year-old starter, who’s been on the IL since April with a right elbow/forearm flexor strain.

“He’s going to go out on a rehab assignment. We still haven’t figured out where it’s going to be,” Martinez said, though he acknowledged a preference if things worked out.

Pittsburgh Pirates v Washington Nationals

“I would like to send him to the closest affiliate for now, because I want him to come back here after he pitches,” Martinez said.

“So - I haven’t looked at the schedule — if Fredericksburg is home, that’s probably where he’ll go.”

Washington’s Single-A affiliate will be playing at home this weekend, so it looks like that is where Gray will begin his rehab assignment.

To this point, it’s been bullpens and live BP, but Gray’s going to go out and test himself and his arm against another team.

“He’s been good. The good news is that he really feels healthy. So that’s awesome. We’ll get him going, we’ll get him built up. Hopefully he’ll have his first one on Sunday, and then we’ll get him on that five-day rotation and we’ll see where it goes,” Martinez told reporters.

Gray, the Nationals hope, will get four innings in, or around 50-60 pitches the first time out, and the club will keep a close eye on how he looks on the mound.

While he’s been on the IL, and as he’s worked his way back, the Nationals’ coaching staff, and Gray, have tweaked things a bit, so his manager wants to see where he’s at.

“His mechanics are a little bit cleaner,” Martinez said.

“He’s in his legs a little bit more. He looked good yesterday. Yesterday, the ball was coming out easy. His velo was 92-93 [MPH].

Pittsburgh Pirates v Washington Nationals

“But it was a lot less effort than it was before. His direction was a lot better, which we worked on a lot during his stint here, so hopefully he takes that into the game.”

If things go well, Gray will keep building and hopefully be back on the mound in the majors before too long.

“We made sure that we did everything right, we did our due diligence with him, and like I said, it’s his first rehab start,” Martinez stressed. “If something goes awry, we see something, we can do something else. But hopefully from here forward everything goes good, and he builds himself [up] and gets back here and helps us win games.”

PolicyTech: FAQ: Working with Sites, Departments and Categories

This article answers frequently asked questions about the management and use of sites, departments and categories in policytech. apr 16, 2019 • article, information.

FAQ: Working with Sites, Departments and Categories CATEGORIES

  • As an Administrator (formally known as a Document Control Administrator) in PolicyTech
  • Go to Settings & Tools >> Content Setup >> Categories >> New >> New Category
  • Select "Hide this category in Browse" to keep the category from appearing when under Documents >> Browse.
  • To provide Owners with the option to create new subcategories, choose " Owner can add subcategories".
  • Choose a Category Owner. This user will have access to all documents associated within this category. This is an optional setting.
  • Choose which site(s) content in this category can be assigned to.  The category can be available automatically in any new sites created.
  • To allow Owners to select only one subcategory when creating content, choose 'Single'.
  • To allow Owners to select more than one subcategory, choose 'Multiple'.
  • Click "Save"
  •  Select the new category, then click New >> New Subcategory.
  • Give the subcategory a name. By default, the reference ID will be the same as the name, unless the system sees a subcategory with that name already exists elsewhere in the system. If that is the case, then the subcategory will need a unique reference ID.
  • Click 'Add'. This will add the subcategory to a list below. Multiple sub categories can be added to that list at a time, allowing for creation of many subcategories at once.
  • Once all desired new subcategories are added to the list at the bottom, select 'Save'.
  • The subcategories are now available to be placed in a Template and/or for Content Owners to assign the values in content.  Only subcategories can be assigned to content.   Be sure to take this into account when creating categories and subcategories. For more information on the difference between categories and subcategories, please see below "What are PolicyTech categories or subcategories and what's the difference between the two?"

Q. How can I delete a subcategory when the following error message appears? "Please correct the following:- Remove the documents from the category (Use Bulk Edit)." A. Do one of the following:

  • Merge the unwanted subcategory into another subcategory rather than deleting the unwanted subcategory.
  • Using Bulk Edit, find all documents associated with the unwanted sub-category and remove it from those documents.

Q. What are PolicyTech categories or subcategories (category values) and what is the difference between the two?            A.  Categories group documents logically to make organizing, sorting and locating specific types of documents easier.

Categories and subcategories are analogous to section divider tabs much like in a paper binder for policies and procedures. When a category is created, subcategories are also required. For example, if the category name is "Document Type", the following sub-categories might be created: Forms, Job Descriptions, Policies, Procedures, Employee Handbook, and Minutes. A hierarchy of subcategories can be created by creating additional subcategory tiers. For example, recalling the above explanation, one could create a subcategory named "Forms" and under this sub-category there could be additional subcategories listing each type of form, such as "Travel Reimbursement" or "Vacation/Leave Request". When creating categories, it is necessary to have subcategories under every top tier category or the category will not be usable. Also, top tier categories cannot be selected as a property for a document. The top tier categories are for the sole purpose of organizing subcategories, which can then be added as a property on documents.

Q. Why do my categories not show up on a document in 'Step 2: Visibility' in the Properties Wizard? A. To make categories available for selection on a document, the categories must first be added to one or more templates. ONLY the categories pre-applied and saved to a template are able to be viewed and selected. Additionally, templates can be configured to automatically add newly created categories, or have selected categories required on documents that use that template. Adding a category to a template does not automatically add that category to documents created from that template. Q. How do I assign Categories to Documents? A. First, ensure that the category has been added to the template (See 'Why do my categories not show up on a document in 'Step 2: Categories' in the Properties Wizard?').  Then open the document and go to Properties Wizard > Step 2: Visibility  > Find the applicable category  > check the box next to the category > repeat this process for every category that needs to be added Tip: You can assign categories to multiple documents at once using Bulk Edit. Q. How do I add a hyperlink to a Category Description?  A. In PolicyTech 6.8 and later, the category description text box includes a button to insert hyperlinks. This button brings up a window which provides the ability to modify the text that will display for the link. Appearance may differ between versions but the button generally looks like chain links. Q. Can I put a Document into multiple Subcategories? A. A document can be assigned to one or more subcategories. Selecting categories is a way to decide how documents will be organized for display on the documents tab. Note: Categories can have a rule assigned which only allows one subcategory to be selected. The rule is applied to a top level category and applies to all levels of subcategories. Q. How do I import a list of my Categories and Sub-Categories into PolicyTech?  A. In the PolicyTech 'Help' section, perform a search for 'Category Import', or 'Importing Subcategories'. There you will find a template that can be used to import subcategories into PolicyTech. DEPARTMENTS Q. Why did an error occur when attempting to remove a department assignment from a job title? A. If a user has an active assignment to a job title and department, the department assignment cannot be removed without first reassigning the user to a different department.  Please also review the section entitled ' How can I delete a sub-category when the following error message appears?' in this FAQ. Q. Is there a way to make it so certain documents are only accessible by a certain department or by certain users? At what level can I create securities (i.e. by department, by template, by document type)?  A.  Document security is managed on a per document basis from step 7 of the Properties Wizard. A Security level of Restricted:High or Restricted:Severe can enable customization of individuals, departments, and job title assignments specifying who can or cannot access the document. A user's document browse view can be filtered by their assigned department. This can be enabled under Company Setup >> General Properties. For additional information about document security please review the knowledge articles below or go to the 'HELP' section in PolicyTech and search 'security'. SITES Q: Why I am unable to change the capitalization of a site's name? A: When checking to see if a site's name is already in use, PolicyTech does not consider upper and lower case letters to be different. In order to change the capitalization of a site's name, first rename it to something else, then rename back to the original name with desired capitalization. Q: What is the difference between a Group and a Global Group as shown in the User Setup > Group Manager section of PolicyTech? A: The "Group" function allows users from multiple departments to be selected with a single click when creating documents and templates. The "Global Group" function is similar, but provides the added ability to pull users from more than one site. If there is only one site in PolicyTech, you may not need to use the Global Group function. For additional information about using groups please go to the 'HELP' section in PolicyTech and search 'adding a user group'. Q: Can a document owner in one site own and manage documents in other sites? A: It is necessary for Document Owners to have Site/Department assignments in the User Manager for each site in which they own (or need to own) documents. For example, if the Document Owner's primary site assignment is "-- Main --" but they own documents that are in "-- Some Other --" site, a second Site/Department assignment will need to be given to the Document Owner. Job Titles for Document Owners are optional in any site.

Understanding Assignments

What this handout is about.

The first step in any successful college writing venture is reading the assignment. While this sounds like a simple task, it can be a tough one. This handout will help you unravel your assignment and begin to craft an effective response. Much of the following advice will involve translating typical assignment terms and practices into meaningful clues to the type of writing your instructor expects. See our short video for more tips.

Basic beginnings

Regardless of the assignment, department, or instructor, adopting these two habits will serve you well :

  • Read the assignment carefully as soon as you receive it. Do not put this task off—reading the assignment at the beginning will save you time, stress, and problems later. An assignment can look pretty straightforward at first, particularly if the instructor has provided lots of information. That does not mean it will not take time and effort to complete; you may even have to learn a new skill to complete the assignment.
  • Ask the instructor about anything you do not understand. Do not hesitate to approach your instructor. Instructors would prefer to set you straight before you hand the paper in. That’s also when you will find their feedback most useful.

Assignment formats

Many assignments follow a basic format. Assignments often begin with an overview of the topic, include a central verb or verbs that describe the task, and offer some additional suggestions, questions, or prompts to get you started.

An Overview of Some Kind

The instructor might set the stage with some general discussion of the subject of the assignment, introduce the topic, or remind you of something pertinent that you have discussed in class. For example:

“Throughout history, gerbils have played a key role in politics,” or “In the last few weeks of class, we have focused on the evening wear of the housefly …”

The Task of the Assignment

Pay attention; this part tells you what to do when you write the paper. Look for the key verb or verbs in the sentence. Words like analyze, summarize, or compare direct you to think about your topic in a certain way. Also pay attention to words such as how, what, when, where, and why; these words guide your attention toward specific information. (See the section in this handout titled “Key Terms” for more information.)

“Analyze the effect that gerbils had on the Russian Revolution”, or “Suggest an interpretation of housefly undergarments that differs from Darwin’s.”

Additional Material to Think about

Here you will find some questions to use as springboards as you begin to think about the topic. Instructors usually include these questions as suggestions rather than requirements. Do not feel compelled to answer every question unless the instructor asks you to do so. Pay attention to the order of the questions. Sometimes they suggest the thinking process your instructor imagines you will need to follow to begin thinking about the topic.

“You may wish to consider the differing views held by Communist gerbils vs. Monarchist gerbils, or Can there be such a thing as ‘the housefly garment industry’ or is it just a home-based craft?”

These are the instructor’s comments about writing expectations:

“Be concise”, “Write effectively”, or “Argue furiously.”

Technical Details

These instructions usually indicate format rules or guidelines.

“Your paper must be typed in Palatino font on gray paper and must not exceed 600 pages. It is due on the anniversary of Mao Tse-tung’s death.”

The assignment’s parts may not appear in exactly this order, and each part may be very long or really short. Nonetheless, being aware of this standard pattern can help you understand what your instructor wants you to do.

Interpreting the assignment

Ask yourself a few basic questions as you read and jot down the answers on the assignment sheet:

Why did your instructor ask you to do this particular task?

Who is your audience.

  • What kind of evidence do you need to support your ideas?

What kind of writing style is acceptable?

  • What are the absolute rules of the paper?

Try to look at the question from the point of view of the instructor. Recognize that your instructor has a reason for giving you this assignment and for giving it to you at a particular point in the semester. In every assignment, the instructor has a challenge for you. This challenge could be anything from demonstrating an ability to think clearly to demonstrating an ability to use the library. See the assignment not as a vague suggestion of what to do but as an opportunity to show that you can handle the course material as directed. Paper assignments give you more than a topic to discuss—they ask you to do something with the topic. Keep reminding yourself of that. Be careful to avoid the other extreme as well: do not read more into the assignment than what is there.

Of course, your instructor has given you an assignment so that they will be able to assess your understanding of the course material and give you an appropriate grade. But there is more to it than that. Your instructor has tried to design a learning experience of some kind. Your instructor wants you to think about something in a particular way for a particular reason. If you read the course description at the beginning of your syllabus, review the assigned readings, and consider the assignment itself, you may begin to see the plan, purpose, or approach to the subject matter that your instructor has created for you. If you still aren’t sure of the assignment’s goals, try asking the instructor. For help with this, see our handout on getting feedback .

Given your instructor’s efforts, it helps to answer the question: What is my purpose in completing this assignment? Is it to gather research from a variety of outside sources and present a coherent picture? Is it to take material I have been learning in class and apply it to a new situation? Is it to prove a point one way or another? Key words from the assignment can help you figure this out. Look for key terms in the form of active verbs that tell you what to do.

Key Terms: Finding Those Active Verbs

Here are some common key words and definitions to help you think about assignment terms:

Information words Ask you to demonstrate what you know about the subject, such as who, what, when, where, how, and why.

  • define —give the subject’s meaning (according to someone or something). Sometimes you have to give more than one view on the subject’s meaning
  • describe —provide details about the subject by answering question words (such as who, what, when, where, how, and why); you might also give details related to the five senses (what you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell)
  • explain —give reasons why or examples of how something happened
  • illustrate —give descriptive examples of the subject and show how each is connected with the subject
  • summarize —briefly list the important ideas you learned about the subject
  • trace —outline how something has changed or developed from an earlier time to its current form
  • research —gather material from outside sources about the subject, often with the implication or requirement that you will analyze what you have found

Relation words Ask you to demonstrate how things are connected.

  • compare —show how two or more things are similar (and, sometimes, different)
  • contrast —show how two or more things are dissimilar
  • apply—use details that you’ve been given to demonstrate how an idea, theory, or concept works in a particular situation
  • cause —show how one event or series of events made something else happen
  • relate —show or describe the connections between things

Interpretation words Ask you to defend ideas of your own about the subject. Do not see these words as requesting opinion alone (unless the assignment specifically says so), but as requiring opinion that is supported by concrete evidence. Remember examples, principles, definitions, or concepts from class or research and use them in your interpretation.

  • assess —summarize your opinion of the subject and measure it against something
  • prove, justify —give reasons or examples to demonstrate how or why something is the truth
  • evaluate, respond —state your opinion of the subject as good, bad, or some combination of the two, with examples and reasons
  • support —give reasons or evidence for something you believe (be sure to state clearly what it is that you believe)
  • synthesize —put two or more things together that have not been put together in class or in your readings before; do not just summarize one and then the other and say that they are similar or different—you must provide a reason for putting them together that runs all the way through the paper
  • analyze —determine how individual parts create or relate to the whole, figure out how something works, what it might mean, or why it is important
  • argue —take a side and defend it with evidence against the other side

More Clues to Your Purpose As you read the assignment, think about what the teacher does in class:

  • What kinds of textbooks or coursepack did your instructor choose for the course—ones that provide background information, explain theories or perspectives, or argue a point of view?
  • In lecture, does your instructor ask your opinion, try to prove their point of view, or use keywords that show up again in the assignment?
  • What kinds of assignments are typical in this discipline? Social science classes often expect more research. Humanities classes thrive on interpretation and analysis.
  • How do the assignments, readings, and lectures work together in the course? Instructors spend time designing courses, sometimes even arguing with their peers about the most effective course materials. Figuring out the overall design to the course will help you understand what each assignment is meant to achieve.

Now, what about your reader? Most undergraduates think of their audience as the instructor. True, your instructor is a good person to keep in mind as you write. But for the purposes of a good paper, think of your audience as someone like your roommate: smart enough to understand a clear, logical argument, but not someone who already knows exactly what is going on in your particular paper. Remember, even if the instructor knows everything there is to know about your paper topic, they still have to read your paper and assess your understanding. In other words, teach the material to your reader.

Aiming a paper at your audience happens in two ways: you make decisions about the tone and the level of information you want to convey.

  • Tone means the “voice” of your paper. Should you be chatty, formal, or objective? Usually you will find some happy medium—you do not want to alienate your reader by sounding condescending or superior, but you do not want to, um, like, totally wig on the man, you know? Eschew ostentatious erudition: some students think the way to sound academic is to use big words. Be careful—you can sound ridiculous, especially if you use the wrong big words.
  • The level of information you use depends on who you think your audience is. If you imagine your audience as your instructor and they already know everything you have to say, you may find yourself leaving out key information that can cause your argument to be unconvincing and illogical. But you do not have to explain every single word or issue. If you are telling your roommate what happened on your favorite science fiction TV show last night, you do not say, “First a dark-haired white man of average height, wearing a suit and carrying a flashlight, walked into the room. Then a purple alien with fifteen arms and at least three eyes turned around. Then the man smiled slightly. In the background, you could hear a clock ticking. The room was fairly dark and had at least two windows that I saw.” You also do not say, “This guy found some aliens. The end.” Find some balance of useful details that support your main point.

You’ll find a much more detailed discussion of these concepts in our handout on audience .

The Grim Truth

With a few exceptions (including some lab and ethnography reports), you are probably being asked to make an argument. You must convince your audience. It is easy to forget this aim when you are researching and writing; as you become involved in your subject matter, you may become enmeshed in the details and focus on learning or simply telling the information you have found. You need to do more than just repeat what you have read. Your writing should have a point, and you should be able to say it in a sentence. Sometimes instructors call this sentence a “thesis” or a “claim.”

So, if your instructor tells you to write about some aspect of oral hygiene, you do not want to just list: “First, you brush your teeth with a soft brush and some peanut butter. Then, you floss with unwaxed, bologna-flavored string. Finally, gargle with bourbon.” Instead, you could say, “Of all the oral cleaning methods, sandblasting removes the most plaque. Therefore it should be recommended by the American Dental Association.” Or, “From an aesthetic perspective, moldy teeth can be quite charming. However, their joys are short-lived.”

Convincing the reader of your argument is the goal of academic writing. It doesn’t have to say “argument” anywhere in the assignment for you to need one. Look at the assignment and think about what kind of argument you could make about it instead of just seeing it as a checklist of information you have to present. For help with understanding the role of argument in academic writing, see our handout on argument .

What kind of evidence do you need?

There are many kinds of evidence, and what type of evidence will work for your assignment can depend on several factors–the discipline, the parameters of the assignment, and your instructor’s preference. Should you use statistics? Historical examples? Do you need to conduct your own experiment? Can you rely on personal experience? See our handout on evidence for suggestions on how to use evidence appropriately.

Make sure you are clear about this part of the assignment, because your use of evidence will be crucial in writing a successful paper. You are not just learning how to argue; you are learning how to argue with specific types of materials and ideas. Ask your instructor what counts as acceptable evidence. You can also ask a librarian for help. No matter what kind of evidence you use, be sure to cite it correctly—see the UNC Libraries citation tutorial .

You cannot always tell from the assignment just what sort of writing style your instructor expects. The instructor may be really laid back in class but still expect you to sound formal in writing. Or the instructor may be fairly formal in class and ask you to write a reflection paper where you need to use “I” and speak from your own experience.

Try to avoid false associations of a particular field with a style (“art historians like wacky creativity,” or “political scientists are boring and just give facts”) and look instead to the types of readings you have been given in class. No one expects you to write like Plato—just use the readings as a guide for what is standard or preferable to your instructor. When in doubt, ask your instructor about the level of formality they expect.

No matter what field you are writing for or what facts you are including, if you do not write so that your reader can understand your main idea, you have wasted your time. So make clarity your main goal. For specific help with style, see our handout on style .

Technical details about the assignment

The technical information you are given in an assignment always seems like the easy part. This section can actually give you lots of little hints about approaching the task. Find out if elements such as page length and citation format (see the UNC Libraries citation tutorial ) are negotiable. Some professors do not have strong preferences as long as you are consistent and fully answer the assignment. Some professors are very specific and will deduct big points for deviations.

Usually, the page length tells you something important: The instructor thinks the size of the paper is appropriate to the assignment’s parameters. In plain English, your instructor is telling you how many pages it should take for you to answer the question as fully as you are expected to. So if an assignment is two pages long, you cannot pad your paper with examples or reword your main idea several times. Hit your one point early, defend it with the clearest example, and finish quickly. If an assignment is ten pages long, you can be more complex in your main points and examples—and if you can only produce five pages for that assignment, you need to see someone for help—as soon as possible.

Tricks that don’t work

Your instructors are not fooled when you:

  • spend more time on the cover page than the essay —graphics, cool binders, and cute titles are no replacement for a well-written paper.
  • use huge fonts, wide margins, or extra spacing to pad the page length —these tricks are immediately obvious to the eye. Most instructors use the same word processor you do. They know what’s possible. Such tactics are especially damning when the instructor has a stack of 60 papers to grade and yours is the only one that low-flying airplane pilots could read.
  • use a paper from another class that covered “sort of similar” material . Again, the instructor has a particular task for you to fulfill in the assignment that usually relates to course material and lectures. Your other paper may not cover this material, and turning in the same paper for more than one course may constitute an Honor Code violation . Ask the instructor—it can’t hurt.
  • get all wacky and “creative” before you answer the question . Showing that you are able to think beyond the boundaries of a simple assignment can be good, but you must do what the assignment calls for first. Again, check with your instructor. A humorous tone can be refreshing for someone grading a stack of papers, but it will not get you a good grade if you have not fulfilled the task.

Critical reading of assignments leads to skills in other types of reading and writing. If you get good at figuring out what the real goals of assignments are, you are going to be better at understanding the goals of all of your classes and fields of study.

War in Sudan caused the world’s largest displacement crisis.

War has pushed Sudan toward the abyss

My colleague Declan Walsh and the photographer Ivor Prickett spent three weeks in Sudan, where few foreign reporters have had access in the past year. Since conflict erupted there in April 2023, millions of people have been displaced, and a looming famine threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of children.

Khartoum, the capital and one of the largest cities in Africa, has been reduced to a charred battleground. A feud between two generals has dragged Sudan into civil war and turned the city into ground zero for one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters.

As many as 150,000 people have died since the start of the fighting, according to U.S. estimates. Nine million have been forced from their homes, making Sudan home to the largest displacement crisis on earth, the United Nations says. Another genocide now threatens Darfur, the region that became synonymous with war crimes two decades ago.

The U.N. warns that famine could kill more than 220,000 children in the coming months. If unchecked, it could rival the Ethiopian famine of the 1980s.

On the ground: In a hushed famine ward, starving babies fight for life. Every few days, one of them dies. Artillery shells soar over the Nile, smashing into hospitals and houses. The state TV station was used as a torture chamber.

What’s next: Peace talks led by the U.S. have stalled. The Sudanese state is collapsing, threatening to drag a fragile region down with it. Experts say it is only a matter of time before one of its neighbors — like Chad, Eritrea or South Sudan — gets sucked in.

Israel tried to influence U.S. opinion

Israel organized and paid for a campaign last year that used fake social media accounts and news sites to urge U.S. lawmakers to support the war in Gaza, a Times investigation found. The secretive effort signals how far Israel was willing to go to sway American opinion.

The campaign began in October and remains active on X. At its peak, it used hundreds of fake accounts that posed as real Americans to post pro-Israel comments. Even though the U.S. has long been one of Israel’s staunchest allies, the war in Gaza has been unpopular with many Americans, who have called for President Biden to withdraw support for Israel in the face of mounting civilian deaths.

Details: The campaign didn’t have a widespread impact, Meta and OpenAI said last week. X didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The C.I.A. director held talks in Qatar, but Israel and Hamas appeared to remain far apart on the latest cease-fire proposal.

Israel said it had launched a new operation in central Gaza , where health workers reported that dozens of people had been killed.

Global heat will continue to break records, U.N. said

Earth is already experiencing some of its highest temperatures in 100,000 years. Yet the U.N. weather agency announced today that there was a nearly 90 percent chance that the planet would set yet another record for its warmest year by 2028 .

The chances are almost as great that, between now and then, the average global temperature will be 1.5 degrees Celsius, or 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, higher than it was at the dawn of the industrial age — the level that countries set out to avoid under the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Saudi arabia courts tourists.

In the past few years, Saudi Arabia’s royal family has spent lavishly to improve the country’s reputation overseas — and reduce its economic dependence on oil. That has included an $800 billion investment in tourism.

But what is it like to travel through a country that was long off-limits to most Westerners? Can the Saudi government persuade would-be visitors to look past — or reconsider — its longstanding associations with religious extremism, ultraconservatism and human rights abuses?

To see the changes for himself, Stephen Hiltner, a journalist for our Travel section, photographed his monthlong trip across the kingdom. Read about his journey and see his pictures.

This is a site about the books and other writing by James Rodgers, author of Assignment Moscow: Reporting on Russia From Lenin to Putin ( new edition 2023 ; first published July 2020); Headlines from the Holy Land (2015 and 2017); No Road Home: Fighting for Land and Faith in Gaza (2013); Reporting Conflict (2012). My work looks at how stories of international affairs, especially armed conflict, are told to the world.

I am an author and journalist. During two decades of covering international news, I reported on the end of the Soviet Union; the wars in Chechnya; the coming to power of Vladimir Putin; 9/11; the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; the 2003 war in Iraq; Russia’s war with Georgia in 2008. I completed correspondent postings for the BBC in Moscow, Brussels, and Gaza. I now teach in the Journalism Department at City, University of London.

Now Out: Assignment Moscow ‘Beautifully written, fascinating throughout’

on site assignment

MY NEW BOOK , Assignment Moscow: Reporting on Russia from Lenin to Putin has now been published in the U.S. and the U.K.

You can order copies, and read more about the book, here for the U.K, edition ( here for the U.S. edition).

These are the reviews so far

“Reporting from Russia has never been easy; Rodgers vividly captures the changing fortunes of Moscow correspondents over the past hundred years, as they penetrated the mysteries of life in Russia and brought them to our newspapers and screens. Some were duped, some were fellow-travellers or spies; most battled against censors and blank-faced politicians; all have helped to shape our understanding of the world’s biggest country.” –  Angus Roxburgh, former Moscow correspondent for the BBC, Sunday Times and Economist

“Writing about journalism in Russia since the revolution, James Rodgers rightly emphasises that to understand Russia you have to talk to people of all kinds. But he argues that even correspondents who knew the language and the history found it hard to report dispassionately because of official obstruction and their own emotional involvement.” –  Rodric Braithwaite

“A highly original, engrossing and accessible book, Assignment Moscow stands out among journalistic accounts of Russia for its subtlety, humility and historic scope. It tells the story of British and American journalists who aimed to throw light on Russia from Lenin to Putin, and in the process illuminated the West itself.” –  Arkady Ostrovsky, Author of The Invention of Russia: The Rise of Putin and the age of Fake News, Winner of the 2016 Orwell Prize

“It is hard to believe that in the torrent of books published on Russia each year, that one could come along as original and valuable as Assignment Moscow. One comes to appreciate the service of our reporting men and women in Moscow. For all their fallibilities, without their dedication, we wouldn’t have half the understanding of Russia that we have today, imperfect as it will always be. We therefore owe them – and especially Rodgers as journalist, teacher, analyst and cataloguer – a huge debt.” –  James Nixey, Chatham House

I was also delighted to get this endorsement on Twitter from Peter Frankopan, Professor of Global History at the University of Oxford, and author of The Silk Roads and The New Silk Roads .

Beautifully written, fascinating throughout – and very timely. Happy publication day ⁦ @jmacrodgers ⁩ ! #AssignmentMoscow pic.twitter.com/WY4xlYL6ZR — Peter Frankopan (@peterfrankopan) July 23, 2020

I will be talking about the book at a number of events planned for September onwards. I will share details here when they are available.

I am very happy to talk at book festivals, to universities, think tanks, conferences etc. Please get in touch if you are interested–contact details below, or via the publisher, I.B. Tauris, part of Bloomsbury .

About the author

James rodgers.

James Rodgers writes books on international affairs, especially armed conflict. His work has a focus on how the stories of those events are told to the world. Much of his writing draws on his own experience reporting from the former Soviet Union and the Middle East as a journalist from the 1990s onwards. During his BBC career (1995-2010), James completed postings in Moscow, Brussels, and Gaza where, from 2002-2004, he was the only international correspondent based in the territory. His numerous other assignments included New York and Washington following the September 11th attacks; reporting from Iraq in 2003 and 2004 during the United States-led invasion; and covering the wars in Chechnya.

James now lectures in International Journalism at City, University of London. He still works as a journalist, too--contributing work to the BBC, NBC Think, Forbes.com, Monocle Radio, and others.
