Memories Movie Review

Irrefutably actor Vetri Sudley has built a reputation in bold experimentation. Even his latest film Memories add another brick to his reputation. The film is about a memory loss patient who suspects that he is being framed for multiple homicides by someone. Actor Vetri Sudley who was last seen in the thriller drama Jiivi 2 is back on screens with his action thriller film Memories. Actress Parvathy Arun has essayed the female lead part in the film. Directors Syam and Praveen have directed the movie. They have co written the script along with writer Vipin Krishnan. So, how has the action thriller movie Memories come out? Will it be a successful drama for actor Vetri Sudley, and be a memorable film for story tellers Syam and Praveen ? To know that let us get into the movie review.

Memories tells the tale of Venky (Vetri Sudley), a memory loss patient who is alleged to have committed multiple murders. The film opens to Venky as a participant of an investigative tv show named Memories hosted by Hareesh Peradi, waiting to narrate his story to the world. The story begins with Venky barging into a police station, with a blood-stained t-shirt seeking the assistance of police claiming that someone is after his life. Upon request for more details by a cop, he begins to recite another story. A story in which he wakes up with a bandage to his head in a dilapidated laboratory located in a remote forest. With a jarring background score a person walks into the room. Venky tells him that he has lost his memory, and asks him for details as to why he is kept in the building. The person replies in metaphors. He then takes Venky in a car. 

Venky learns that he is wanted for murders from a newspaper in the car. The person gives Venky a 17-hour ultimatum to find out who he is, and speeds away. Venky gets a phone call from Saravanan (Ramesh Thilak). He comes to pick him up. On the way, Venky reveals to him that he has lost his memory, and he does not remember him. He asks Saravanan for how they both know each other and whether he knows anything about his life. We have another story. Venky comes to Saravanan’s home after a long time to see locations for a film that he is about to direct. They go to a hotel, where Venky starts to narrate his plot to him. A bizarre thing happens. The story suddenly turns into a real-life event, and we have a duet number. Who is Venky, did he actually commit the murders, or is someone trying to set him up, is what makes the rest of the flick. 

Memories has an experimental aura filled all over it. It is a good thing when creators skip the conventional path and take a shot at nonlinear storytelling. We as audience could make few concessions to such attempts. Provided we get at least something new in terms of cinematic experience. In the case of Memories, directors Syam and Praveen are ambitious to the skies but they do not even take off from the ground as the material on hand is mediocre beyond tolerance. Memories reiterate a series of events from different dimensions that not only demands too much focus for nothing but resoundingly drains the audience. 

Yep, at the start this approach got us hooked. But gradually, it loses focus from the core plot and begins to go all over the place as per the whims and fancies of the creators. Apart from the core idea, we do not see an effort in any other aspect. For instance, the manner in which Venky escapes from the cops every single time, and the back stories given as reasons for the murders are written just like that. Also, the film screams of budget constraints in our face. There are intriguing ideas in Memories as well. Like the way in which all the narratives manage to converge at a point finally, and a couple of smartly placed twists. But there really is not a story to pull the film together, and offer us something to hold in our memory. 

Actor Vetri Sudley struggles to sell his character convincingly. There are rare moments where he elevates the scene with his performance, but for a substantial portion he is straight faced. Actress Parvathy Arun has nothing much to offer to move the proceedings. Nonetheless, she lives up to her role. Actor Hareesh Peradi for a change has opted a role that is contrast from the stereotypical part he has been doing incessantly. Unfortunately, his character has limited scope for him to perform. But he makes an impact despite limitations. Actor Ramesh Thilak serves the purpose for why he was brought on board. Actress Dayana Hameed is operational. Actor R N R Manohar is adequate. Actor Sajil is functional. The rest of the cast has delivered an average performance. 

On the technical front, music director Gavaskar Avinash’s tracks do not stay in our memory. But he adds value with his background score that aids in fashioning the mystery pulse of the film. Cinematographers Armo and Kiran Nupital have done a middling job covering the drama . Their camera angles do nothing to bring the intensity needed for a thriller drama. Editor San Lokesh has brought forth his fine editing prowess to weed out the flaws in the work of his colleagues. 

On the whole, directors Syam and Praveen are fixated on the experimentation part so much that they overlook the basic film making traits prerequisite to engage the audience.

மெமரீஸ் என்ற தொலைக்காட்சி நிகழ்ச்சியில் தனக்கு தெரிந்த நபர் ஒருவரின் வாழ்வில் மெமரீஸினால் ஏற்பட்ட அனுபவத்தை பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள வருகிறார், ஹீரோ. வெங்கி என்பவரின் வாழ்வில்தான் அந்த சம்பவம் என கூறுகிறார். ஃப்ளேஷ் பேக்கில் கதை நகர்கிறது.

அம்மாவோட திடீர் விவாகரத்து முடிவுக்கு பொண்ணு வச்ச செக்.. பிக் பாஸ் அர்ச்சனாவுக்கு என்ன ஆச்சு? ஒரு பாழடைந்த வீட்டில், தலையில் அடிபட்ட நிலையில் கண் விழிக்கிறார் ஹீரோ வெற்றி. சட்டையெல்லாம் ரத்தக்கறை, தான் யார் என்பதே அவருக்கு நினைவில்லை. இவரை அடைத்து வைத்திருப்பவன் மூலம் தான் இரட்டை கொலை வழக்கில் தேடப்படும் கொலையாளி என்பதை தெரிந்து காெள்கிறார். இதனால், தன்னை அடைத்து வைத்திருக்கும் நபரிடம், "நான் யார், என்னை ஏன் அடைத்து வைத்திருக்கிறீர்கள்.." கேள்வியாய் கேட்கிறார். இதற்கு பதிலாக, "நீ யார் என்பதை 17 மணிநேரத்திற்கள் நீ கண்டுபிடிக்க வேண்டும். ஆனால் அப்படி கண்டுபிடித்த பிறகு நீ உயிருடன் இருக்க மாட்டாய்" என ட்விஸ்ட் வைக்கிறார், அந்த மர்ம நபர். அடர்ந்த காட்டிற்குள் தான் யார் என்பதை தேடி அலையும் ஹீரோவை, போலீஸ் துரத்துகிறது, அவர்களிடமிருந்து தப்பிக்கும் ஹீரோவை துப்பாக்கி முனையில் பிடிக்கும் ஆர்.என்.ஆர் மனோகர் "என் மனைவியை மட்டும்தானே கொல்ல சொன்னேன்...என் மகளை என்ன செய்தாய்?" என கேட்கிறார்.

ஹீரோவை சுற்றி என்னதான் நடக்கிறது? உண்மையிலேயே அந்த கொலைகளை செய்தது அவர்தானா? அவரை துரத்தும் நபர்களுக்கும் ஹீரோவுக்கும் என்ன தொடர்பு? போன்ற அடுக்கடுக்கான கேள்விகளை நோக்கி நகர்கிறது திரைக்கதை.

மெமரீஸ் படத்தில் ஹீராேவிற்கு மட்டுமல்ல, அவரை சுற்றி வரும் கதாப்பாத்திரங்களுக்கும் டபுள் ரோல்தான். மெமரி எரேசிங் மற்றும் மெமரி இன்ஸர்டிங் எனும் ஒரே கான்சப்டை வைத்து ஒரு நல்ல படத்தை கொடுக்க இயக்குநர் எடுத்த முயற்சிக்கு பாராட்டுகள். இப்போது வெளிவரும் பல டைம்-ட்ராவல், சைக்காலஜி த்ரில்லர் படங்களில் கதைக்குள் கதை வைப்பது இயல்பான விஷயம்தான். முதலில் ஏதோவொரு இயல்பான இளைஞராக காட்டப்படும் ஹீரோ வெற்றி, பிறகு தனது நினைவுகளை இழந்து விட்டு கொலைகாரனா? நல்லவனா? என்று தெரியாமல் விழி பிதுங்கும் மனிதனாக நல்ல நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார். அதன் பிறகு வைக்கப்படும் ட்விஸ்ட் யாரும் எதிர்பாராதது. படத்தின் நாயகன் வெற்றி, தனக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட கதாப்பாத்திரத்தை சிறப்பாக செதுக்கி கொடுத்திறருக்கிறார். ரமேஷ் திலக், நண்பன்-காவல் அதிகாரி கதாப்பாத்திரத்தில் பொருந்தி இருக்கிறார். நாயகியாக களம் இறங்கியுள்ள பார்வதிக்கு பெரிதாக நடிக்க வேண்டிய வேலை இல்லாமல் போய் விடுகிறது.

கதாப்பாத்திரங்களின் பங்கு:

படத்தின் நாயகன் வெற்றி, தனக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட கதாப்பாத்திரத்தை சிறப்பாக செதுக்கி கொடுத்திறருக்கிறார். இருந்தாலும், காதல் காட்சிகளிலும், சைக்கோ வில்லன் காட்சிகளிலும் தனது இயல்பான நடிப்பை விடுத்து வேறு ஏதோ செய்ய முயற்சித்து தோல்வியுற்றிருக்கிறார். ரமேஷ் திலக், நண்பன்-காவல் அதிகாரி கதாப்பாத்திரத்தில் பொருந்தி இருக்கிறார். நாயகியாக களம் இறங்கியுள்ள பார்வதிக்கு பெரிதாக நடிக்க வேண்டிய வேலை இல்லாமல் போய் விடுகிறது. மனோதத்துவ மருத்துவராக வரும் ஹரிஷ் பேரடியின் மலையாளம் வாசம் வீசும் தமிழ் வார்த்தைகளின் உச்சரிப்பு ஆங்காங்கே முகம் சுளிக்க வைக்கிறது. 

ரசிகர்களின் கருத்து என்ன?

ட்ரைலரை பார்த்துவிட்டு, “ஆஹா ஓஹோ” என நினைத்து கொண்டு படத்தை பார்க்கும் ரசிகர்களின் முகத்தில் ‘சப்’பென அறைந்து விடுகிறது, திரைக்கதை. காட்டிற்குள் நாயகன் ஓடும் காட்சிகளை இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் கத்தரித்து இருக்கலாம்.  நல்ல ஒன்-லைன் ஸ்டோரியை இரண்டாம் பாதிக்கு மேல் சொதப்பி வைத்திருக்கின்றனர். படம் முடிந்து எப்போது வெளியே ஓடுவோம் என்ற எண்ணத்துடனேயே இடைவேளைக்கு அடுத்த பாதியை பார்த்ததாக” சொல்லும் விமர்சனங்களை பார்க்கமுடிந்தது.

படத்தின் க்ளைமேக்ஸ் பொறுமைசாலியின் பொருமையும் ரொம்பவே சாேதிக்கின்றது. முதல் பாதியில் இருந்த வேகமும் விவேகமும் அடுத்த பாதியில் இல்லை. இருக்கை நுனிக்கு வரவைக்காத சைக்கோ-த்ரில்லர் என்றாலும் இருக்கையில் இருந்து எழுந்து ஓட செய்யாத கதையாகத்தான் இருக்கிறது மெமரீஸ்.

Memories review: A complex, illogical plot that leaves you exhausted

Syam-Praveen’s directorial has too many versions of the same story that demands too much attention from audiences, which isn’t possible.

Through Memories , directors Syam and Praveen deliver a complex, multi-layered psychological crime thriller that can be quite demanding on the audience.

The average audience is bound to find the plot too complex and tedious to follow.

Meanwhile, the extremely smart ones — who have both the patience and the acumen to follow the developments and understand the plot comprehensively — are bound to find themselves posing logical questions for which the film offers little or no answers.

Nevertheless, the movie is a brave attempt at narrating a complex plot.

The film begins with a television programme called “Memories” which narrates the story of an innocent man called Venky (Vetri) who has been conned into accepting a series of crimes he did not commit.

The narration begins with Venky regaining consciousness to find himself in what appears to be a dilapidated clinic in the middle of a forest.

He has no recollection of who he is and what he is doing there in the forest. When he poses questions about his identity to Abinav Ramanujam, the doctor treating him, he gets no answers. Instead, all that Abinav does is take Venky on a drive.

In the car, Venky stumbles upon a newspaper that carries a report that claims that he is wanted in connection with a series of murders.

A flabbergasted Venky finds it hard to come to terms with the fact that he is a murderer. He knows deep inside his heart that he is innocent but has no memory of who he is, what actually transpired and why he finds himself in his current position.

When he again tries to extract information from Abinav Ramanujam, the doctor only laughs and tells him he has exactly 17 hours to know who he is. What happens then is what Memories is all about.

Too complex to understand

Memories has too many developments that are strikingly similar to one another with each individual in each development assuming a different character name and a different role.

The core plot is the same. An innocent man has been framed by removing his memories and planting new ones.

But there are different versions of who is the victim and who is the perpetrator. The versions keep changing and send you into a tizzy.

Due to its tedious nature and how the story is narrated, the audience runs the risk of losing the plot completely even if they lose attention for a moment. Such undivided attention is rarely possible.

Performances

Actor Vetri, who plays the lead character, is not entirely convincing. Although there are portions in which he looks impressive, by and large, he is found struggling to deliver a convincing performance.

Hareesh Peradi as the interviewer in the television programme delivers yet another commendable performance.

Actress Parvathy, who plays the female lead Janaki, delivers a neat performance. She appears for only a brief period but impresses you within that short period.

Late actor RNR Manohar plays a pivotal role in this film — probably his last.

He does total justice to the character of Perumal. Manohar seems to have given one more outstanding performance for his fans to cherish.

Ramesh Thilak and Dayana come up with credible performances.

Technical crafts

On the technical front, music director Gavaskar Avinash does a good job. The background score is pulsating for the most part and the numbers are mellifluous and enjoyable.

Cinematography is done by two camerapersons: Armo and Kiran. It is unclear who shot which portions and therefore credit must be accorded to both equally.

In particular, how a chase sequence in the initial portions of the film has been picturised is impressive. Quite a lot of work seems to have been put in to shoot the sequence.

In all, Memories really tests your memory and make you sweat to make a sense of it.

மிகச் சிக்கலான சைக்கலாஜிக்கல் த்ரில்லர் என மெமரீஸ் படத்தைப் பற்றி படக்குழு விளம்பரப்படுத்தினர். அதற்கு ஏற்றாற்போலே அமைந்துள்ளது திரைக்கதை. பார்வையாளர்களின் அதீத கவனத்தைக் கோரும் ஒரு படம். பிரதான கதாபாத்திரத்தின் கோணத்திலேயே படம் பார்க்கப் பழகிவிட்ட பார்வையாளர்களுக்கு, இப்படம் சவாலானதாக இருக்கும். கதை மூன்றாக விரிகிறது, பிரதான கதாபாத்திரமான வெற்றி, ஒவ்வொரு உப கதையிலும் ஒவ்வொரு ரோலில் வருகிறார்.

முதல் கதையில், மருத்துவர் பெருமாளின் குடும்பம் கொல்லப்படுகிறது. அந்த நான்கு கொலைகளையும் செய்தது உதவி இயக்குநர் வெங்கி எனத் தெரிய வருகிறது. வெங்கிக்கோ, விபத்தில் ‘மெமரி லாஸ்’ ஏற்பட்டுவிட, மருத்துவர் அபிநவ் ராமானுஜத்தின் உதவியோடு, வெங்கியின் நினைவைத் தட்டியெழுப்பி, அவன் புரிந்த கொலைகளைப் பற்றி அவனையே வாக்குமூலம் செய்ய வைக்கின்றார்.

இரண்டாவது கதை, நான்கு கொலைகளையும் செய்தது வெங்கி அல்ல என எட்டு வருடங்களுக்குப் பிறகு, அவ்வழக்கை தூசி தட்டி எடுக்கிறார் போலீஸ் உயரதிகாரி ஏசிபி ஆதி கேஷவ். வெங்கியின் நினைவினை அழித்து, நடக்காததை நடந்தது போல் ‘மெமரி மேப்பிங்’ செய்து விடுகிறார் மருத்துவர் ராமானுஜம் எனக் கண்டுபிடிக்கிறார் ஆதி கேஷவ்.

மூன்றாவது கதை, கோமாவில் இருந்து விழித்தும், எதுவும் பேசாமல் சுவரெங்கும் ஓவியம் வரைந்தவாறு இருக்கும் மருத்துவர் ராமானுஜத்தை உண்மையை ஒத்துக் கொள்ள வைக்க மனசாட்சியுள்ள போலீஸ் உயரதிகாரி ஒருவரும், மருத்துவர் ஒருவரும் முயற்சி செய்கின்றனர்.

மேலே உள்ள மூன்று கதைகளில், இரண்டு நிகழ்கின்றன. ஒரு கதை மட்டும், நிகழ்ந்ததாக மெமரி மேப்பிங்கில் ஒரு கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு நம்ப வைக்கப்படுகிறது. கிறிஸ்டோஃபர் நோலனின் இன்செப்ஷன் படத்தில், கனவுக்குள் சென்று ஒரு விஷயத்தை விதைப்பார்கள். இப்படத்தில், ஒருவரது மூளையை நவீன கருவிகளின் உதவியோடு, மெமரீஸினை அழித்து புதிய மெமரீஸை அளிக்கிறார்கள். இன்செப்ஷனிலும் மூன்று அடுக்குகளாகக் கதை சுவாரசியத்துடன் உட்செல்லும், இப்படத்தில் அந்த சுவாரசியம் மட்டும் மிஸ்ஸிங். ஒரு டைம் ஃப்ரேம்க்குள், நாயகன் குழு என்ன சாதிக்க நினைக்கிறது என இன்செப்ஷனில் சுவாரசியப்படுத்தியிருப்பர். மெமரீஸ் படம் த்ரில்லர் என்பதால், கடைசியில் தான் ட்விஸ்ட் ஓப்பன் செய்யப்பட வேண்டுமென ஒரு நிர்ப்பந்தத்தை இரட்டை இயக்குநர்கள் ஷ்யாமும் ப்ரவீனும் ஏற்படுத்திக் கொள்வதால், படம் எதை நோக்கிச் செல்கிறது என்ற தெளிவின்மை சுவாரசியத்தை மட்டுப்படுத்தி விடுகிறது.

இந்தப் படத்தில், மெமரீஸ் ஷோவில் கதை சொல்லும் வெற்றி, மூன்று கதைகளிலுமே ஒரு கதாபாத்திரமாக வருகிறார். ஷோவில் கதை சொல்பவராக, வெங்கியாக, ஆதி கேஷவாக, அபிநவ் ராமானுஜமாக நான்கு கெட்டப்பில் வருகிறார். த்ரில்லர், மிகச் சிக்கலாவது, ஒருவரே அத்தனை பாத்திரங்களிலும் தோன்றி, பின், பார்வையாளர்களின் மெமரியில் அதை அழிக்க முற்படுவதால்தான். 😉

மலையாள இயக்குநர்களான ஷ்யாம் – பிரவீன் படத்திற்குத் தமிழில் வசனம் எழுதியுள்ளார் அஜயன் பாலா. ‘இது ஒருவேளை கொரியன் படம் ஏதாவது ஒன்றின் தழுவலாக இருக்குமோ?’ என்ற ஐயத்தோடே, இப்படத்தில் ஒப்பந்தமாகியுள்ளார். அஜயன் பாலாவும் தன் பங்கிற்கு அவரது சாமர்த்தியத்தையும் அனுபவத்தையும் காட்டக் களத்தில் இறங்காமல், வசனங்களில் எளிமையைக் கடைபிடித்துள்ளதால் கதையோடு கொஞ்சமாவது ஒன்ற முடிகிறது. இந்தப் படத்தின் மிகச் சவாலான பணியான படத்தொகுப்பைச் செய்துள்ளார் சான் லோகேஷ். பார்வையாளர்களை விடவும் மிகவும் சிரமத்திற்கு உள்ளாகியிருப்பார் என்பது மட்டும் திண்ணம்.

‘க்’ படத்தின் இசையமைப்பாளரான கவாஸ்கர் அவினாஷ், த்ரில்லர் படங்களின் நாடியே பின்னணி இசை என்பதை உணர்ந்து பின்னணி இசை அமைத்துள்ளார். (விமர்சனத்துக்குத் தேவையில்லாத சங்கதி எனினும், இவர் இப்படத்தில் இணைந்தது ஒரு சுவாரசியமான விஷயம். கொரோனோ முதல் அலையின் பொழுது, இந்தியாவிலேயே முதன்முறையாகக் கேரளாவில் 0 கொரோனோ நோயாளிகள் என பினராயி விஜயன் அறிவித்திருந்தார். அதைப் படத்தின் இயக்குநர்களில் ஒருவரான ஷ்யாம் ஃபேஸ்புக்கில் ஸ்டேட்டஸாக வைத்துள்ளார். ‘அப்ப கேரளாவில் சரியா டெஸ்ட் எடுத்திருக்க மாட்டீங்க’ என பின்னூட்டமிட்டுள்ளார் கவாஸ்கர் அவினாஷ். ‘யார்றா இவன்?’ எனக் கடுப்போடு அவரது ப்ரொஃபைலைப் பார்த்துள்ளார் ஷ்யாம். அப்படிப் போய்ப் பார்த்து, அவரது இசை பிடித்ததால், அவரை இசையமைப்பாளாராகத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்துள்ளனர்.)

ஜீவி படம் வெளிவந்ததும், இந்தப் பட வாய்ப்பினைப் பெற்றுள்ளார் நாயகன் வெற்றி. வெற்றியின் ஜீவி படத்தைக் காட்டியே இயக்குநர்கள், தயாரிப்பாளர் ஷிஜு தமீனைச் சம்மதிக்க வைத்துள்ளனர். இயக்குநர்களின் நம்பிக்கைக்கு எந்தக் குறையும் வைக்காமல், நான்கு கெட்டப்களிலும் வித்தியாசத்தினைக் காட்டியுள்ளார் வெற்றி. பார்வதி அருண், டயானா என படத்தில் இரண்டு நாயகிகள். தோன்றும்போது கவனிக்க வைத்தாலும், கதையின் complexity-இல் மறைந்து விடுகின்றனர்.

மெமரி மேப்பிங் செய்யவல்ல ஒரு மருத்துவர், சிலந்தி வலை ஒன்றைப் பின்னுகிறார். இது படத்தின் தொடக்கம். அதில் வெங்கி எனும் பூச்சி, சிக்கிக் கொள்கிறது. இது படத்தின் இடைவேளை. சிலந்தி தனது நச்சுக் கொடுக்கால் பூச்சியைக் கொல்ல நினைக்கும்பொழுது, சிலந்தி வலையில் இருந்து தப்பி விடுகிறது பூச்சி. இது படத்தின் முடிவு. மொத்த படத்தையும் இயக்குநர்கள், அழகான இக்குறியீட்டில் அடக்கியுள்ளது மிகவும் சிறப்பு.

பார்வையாளர்களுக்கு எங்கே புரியாமல் போய்விடுமோ என சிறு சிறு விஷயத்தையும் ஸ்ஃபூன் ஃபீடிங் செய்யும் இயக்குநர்களுக்கு மட்டியில், அவர்கள் மீது மிகுந்த நம்பிக்கை வைத்துப் படம் இயக்கியுள்ள ஷ்யாமிற்கும் பிரவீனிற்கும் வாழ்த்துகள்.

Memories Movie Review: Intentionally convoluted, unintentionally funny

Have you ever wondered how it would be if a certain modern-day Martin Scorsese classic was remade in Tamil? Saying which Scorsese film would spoil one of the very few fun things about Vetri’s latest release, Memories , which is an ambitious film. It wants to fit into a lot of genres, right from dark comedy (unintentionally) to a psychological thriller, albeit disappointing us on many counts. The Syam-Praveen directorial sends the characters and the audience on a wild goose chase by having twists that would put even the likes of Abbas-Mustan to shame.

Remember veteran comedian Vivekh’s iconic ‘Angaye kondu vechaanga twist-a?’ dialogue? Memories leaves us with this expression more than once. Do these proverbial twists, which are definitely one too many, succeed in pulling the wool over our eyes? Nope. Do the various tracks in the film make you feel exasperated while watching the film, despite its under-2 hour runtime? A resounding yes. Memories begins with a frantic Venky, wearing a bloodied t-shirt, reaching the doors of a police station. He complains of being chased by someone out to kill him. What follows is a convoluted narration involving a long-lost friend, Vetri escaping through a window and running around like a headless chicken, a stylish guy with a fashion sense that can put him in the centre of a Paris Fashion Walk, Vetri escaping through a window and running around like a headless chicken, a murder spree that ends in the killings of 5 people, Vetri escaping through a window and running around like a headless chicken, and of course, a romantic track that has no one coming even in walking, let alone flying colours. And yeah, Vetri escapes through a window and runs around like a headless chicken because he is a murderer who has forgotten whom he murdered and why he murdered. This plot line and the fact that the film is titled Memories reminded me of Jeethu Joseph, who joins Martin Scorsese in providing an inspiration of sorts for the film. To give credit where it is due, Vetri is one of the better analysers of the scripts coming his way. As Memories rather painfully unfolds on screen, it is clear what would have made Vetri believe in the film. There are a lot of smart ideas, which definitely had the potential to be something of great value. The central premise of having a single incident narrated in different ways is a fascinating aspect of Memories . 

Even the way each of these narratives finds a way to come to the fore is an interesting idea on paper. But it is almost criminal that not a single idea was decently translated onscreen. Right from the outlandish premise of having a talk show about ‘memories’ to the random suspension of disbelief that the makers force us to have doesn’t work in favour of the film. After the first couple of twists, a sense of exasperation sets in, and it is clear that writers had too much of fun penning these ideas, and there was no one to rein them in. The narrative suffers from a lack of focus, and without that solid hold about the central plot, Memories just drifts to multiple territories without creating any impact. 

The randomness of mental health portrayal leaves a lot to be desired too. Also, instead of the audience responding ‘Wow, you are clever’ to the 734th twist in the tale, it feels like the makers are more interested in establishing the ‘Look at me! I’m so clever’ trope and honestly, no one really likes a showoff. The entire film rests on Vetri’s shoulders, and after a point, the actor feels visibly crumbled under the pressure. There is only so much even the actors can do when the writing doesn’t back them up with sound reasoning. The rest of the actors, barring the late RNR Manohar, deliver amateurish performances that just feel shoddy. 

In films like Memories , it is imperative that the engagement factor is on point, and the film spectacularly fails on that front. The semblance of engagement is present through the background score of Gavaskar Avinash, who does a neat job of keeping things ticking. Of course, a lot of loose ends get tied up towards the end, but the arduous and unintentionally funny journey to that point doesn’t justify the means at all. The funny moments, right from certain casting choices, continuity errors in the name badges of cops, the not-so-smart jumps in timelines, and of course, the ease with which Vetri’s character escapes from captivity through an open window are some of the very few aspects that are truly memorable about Memories . 

Honestly, it is just sad that our very own Jeethu- Scorsese mashup of a film ends up being a largely forgettable experience despite having a fantastical premise at the core of it all.

'Double iSmart' Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad; Find Out

Puri Jagannadh is back with his latest movie 'Double iSmart' which is released on Thursday to coincide with the Independence Day celebration.

The film is a spiritual sequel to 'iSmart Shankar'. The latest flick stars Ram Pothineni and Sanjay Dutt alongside Kavya Thapar, Bani J, Sayaji Shinde, Getup Srinu and Ali. The movie has Mani Sharma's music, Gianni Giannelli and Shyam K Naidu's cinematography and Karthika Srinivas' editing.

The Story International mafia kingpin Big Bull (Sanjay Dutt), diagnosed with Glioma, is in a frantic race against time to escape death. A scientist proposes a groundbreaking solution: transferring his memories into another person's brain to achieve immortality. Their search for the perfect host brings them to Shankar (Ram Pothineni) in Hyderabad. The memory transfer sets off a chain of thrilling events that unfold on screen, making it a must-watch cinematic experience.

The movie had garnered a lot of buzz. The promos had managed to draw the eyeballs of the Telugu cine-goers. Will it live up to their expectations? Find out from their words below:

Venky Reviews: #DoubleISMART Follows a very similar template to the prequel. Ram's energy is the mainstay of the film and makes it bearable. However, the routine taking of Puri and the artificial drama like narration tests your patience. Ali's comedy track is so cringe that it makes us laugh at how stupid it is. Ram and few intriguing sequences stand out. If you liked the prequel, then this one may appeal to you. If not, it is an avoidable fare that offers nothing appealing. Rating: 2.25/5

Ramesh Bala: #DoubleiSmart :An out-and-out mass entertainer: 🌟🌟🌟

A perfect commercial potboiler in which #PuriJagannadh almost succeeded in finding his mojo back and #RamPothineni excelled with his sensational performance.

The mass songs shook the theaters and romance is just at Par. Ram-Sanjay Dutt combination scenes feel fresh with a bombastic climax just like its prequel. The emotional portion worked out very well and the music was too good by #ManiSharma.

வித்தியாசமான முயற்சி வெற்றியா? - ‘மெமரீஸ்’ விமர்சனம்

ஜீவி, எட்டு தோட்டாக்கள், C/O காதல் போன்ற ரசிகர்களிடம் கவனம் பெற்ற படங்களைக் கொடுத்த வளர்ந்து வரும் நடிகர் வெற்றி தற்பொழுது சைக்கலாஜிக்கல் திரில்லர் படமான மெமரீஸ் படம் மூலம் களத்தில் குதித்திருக்கிறார். முந்தைய படங்களைப் போல் சிக்கலான கதை அமைப்பைக் கொண்ட இந்த மெமரீஸ் திரைப்படம் வரவேற்பு பெற்றதா இல்லையா?

மூன்று கொலைகள் செய்த ஒருவனை அவனை வைத்தே அக்கொலைகளைக் கண்டுபிடிக்கும் ஒரு வித்தியாசமான கதையைக் கொண்டு சைக்காலஜிக்கல் திரில்லராக வெளியாகி உள்ளது மெமரீஸ் திரைப்படம். ஒரு கதையாக பார்க்கும் பொழுது வித்தியாசமாகவும் சுவாரஸ்யமாகவும் இது தென்பட்டாலும் திரைக்கதையாக பார்க்கும் பொழுது பல்வேறு  குழப்பங்களுக்கு இடையே கதை நகர்ந்து கடைசி 15 நிமிடங்களில் பல்வேறு குழப்பங்களுக்கு பதில் கூறும் வகையில் படம் அமைந்துள்ளது. ஒரு சிம்பிளான கதையை சைக்கலாஜிக்கல் திரில்லர் பாணியில் பல்வேறு குழப்பங்களை ஏற்படுத்தி, கதைக்குள் பல்வேறு பிளாஷ்பேக்குகளை உள்ளடக்கி அதன் மூலம் பல முடிச்சுகளைப் போட்டு, அதை படத்தின் இறுதிக் கட்டத்தில் ஒவ்வொன்றாக அவிழ்த்து வித்தியாசமான படத்தை கொடுத்திருக்கின்றனர் இயக்குநர்கள் பிரவீன் & ஷ்யாம். அதேபோல் படம் முழுவதும் பல்வேறு இடங்களில் எதிர்பாராத திருப்பங்களை வைத்து படம் பார்ப்பவர்களை சீட்டின் நுனிக்கே வர வைத்துள்ளனர். இருந்தும் படம் முழுவதும் ஒரு குழப்பமான நிலை சுற்றி சுற்றி வருவதையும் தவிர்க்க முடியவில்லை. சில பல காட்சிகள் ரிப்பீட்டாக வருவது மட்டும் ஆங்காங்கே அயற்சியை கொடுத்துள்ளது.

கவனிக்கத்தக்க வகையில் படங்களை தேர்வு செய்து நடித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் வளர்ந்து வரும் நடிகர் வெற்றி இப்படத்திலும் ஒரு வித்தியாசமான திரைக் கதையை தேர்ந்தெடுத்து நடித்திருக்கிறார். அவருக்கு படத்தில் பல்வேறு கெட்டப்புகள் ஒவ்வொரு கெட்டப்புகளுக்கு ஏற்றவாறு முகபாவனைகளை மற்றும் தனது உடல் மொழிகளை மாற்றி நடித்து கவனம் பெற்றுள்ளார். படத்தில் இரண்டு நாயகிகள் டயானா, பார்வதி ஆகியோர். இவர்கள் இருவரும் அவரவருக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட வேலையை நிறைவாகச் செய்திருக்கின்றனர். இவர்களுக்கு படத்தில் அதிக வேலை இல்லை என்றாலும் தனக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட ஸ்பேசை சரியாக பயன்படுத்தி இருக்கின்றனர். சிறிது நேரமே வந்தாலும் ரமேஷ் திலக் எதார்த்தமான நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தி கவனம் ஈர்த்துள்ளார். இவருடன் சேர்ந்து முக்கிய கதாபாத்திரத்தில் நடித்துள்ள ஹரிஷ் பேரோடி கதையின் கடைசியில் ட்விஸ்ட் கொடுத்துள்ளார். இவரின் கதாபாத்திரம் படத்தின் திரைக்கதைக்கு உதவி புரிந்துள்ளது. மற்றும் ஆர்.என்.ஆர் மனோகர் உட்பட பலர் அவரவருக்கான வேலையை செய்து விட்டுச் சென்றுள்ளனர்.

ஒளிப்பதிவாளர்கள் அர்மோ & கிரண் ஆகியோர் இரவு நேரக் காட்சிகளை சிறப்பாக பதிவு செய்துள்ளனர். கவாஸ்கர் அவினாஷ் பின்னணி இசை படத்துக்கு பக்க பலமாக அமைந்துள்ளது. படத்தில் நம்ப முடியாத அளவிற்கு பல்வேறு திருப்பங்களை வைத்து, குறிப்பாக ஒருவரின் நினைவுகளை அழித்துவிட்டு, வேறு ஒரு நினைவுகளை 17 மணி நேரம் பொருத்த முடியும் என்ற வித்தியாசமான கதையை தேர்வு செய்த இயக்குநர் அதை சற்று குழப்பம் நிறைந்த திரைக்கதையோடு பல்வேறு முடிச்சுகளை அவிழ்க்கும் படி கூறியிருக்கிறார்.

'Minmini' Review: Halitha Shameem's film lacks depth

Director Halitha Shameem is a promising voice in Tamil cinema, thanks to films like 'Poovarasam Peepee' and 'Sillu Karupatti'. For her, 'Minmini' is an ambitious attempt. She filmed the movie over eight years so she could capture the growth of the actors needed for the film. Naturally, this aspect intrigued a section of the audience. Did 'Minmini' live up to the expectations? Let's find out.

'Minimini' begins with visuals of the charming Pari Mukhilan (played by Gaurav Kaalai). In his residential school, he is a sportsperson who brings medals and glory. So much so, that teachers are okay with him not doing well academically. Enter Sabari Karthikeyan (played by Praveen Kishore), who is a chess player, a wonderful artist and a bright student. While Pari bullies new joinee Sabari, they also build a love-hate relationship over the next few months. However, an untoward incident pushes Sabari into depression.

Parallelly, we see Esther Anil (Praveenah), who is recuperating from a heart transplant. How Pari, Sabari and Praveenah's interconnected lives form the rest of the story.

Director Halitha Shameem's films are closer to reality. Be it 'Poovarasam Peepee', 'Sillu Karupatti' or 'Aelay', her films champion ordinary people and see the beauty in them. However, her latest offering 'Minmini' does not fit into this category. The film fails to connect right from the first frame. When she establishes Pari's character, we get a bunch of disjointed scenes which jump from one situation to another. These portions show Pari as a bully, and he doesn't get reprimanded by anyone.

For major portions of the film, we don't see the story moving. It concentrates more on the characters than on their journey. The second half of 'Minmini' shows Sabari and Praveenah riding to the Himalayas while discovering themselves. Sabari doesn't recognise Praveenah despite them being classmates. However, as riders, they go through the journey. It is Pari who connects them. While Praveenah knows this, Sabari doesn't. All the film needs is for the two characters to open up to each other.

However, Halitha Shameem's screenplay doesn't let them open up to each other. They share their secrets in installments, which hampers the progress of the story. Also, the dialogues in 'Minimini' are too philosophical and remind one of those spiritual books suggested by the influencers.

'Minimini' concentrates only on these prime characters. We don't know who Sabari and Praveenah's parents are and how they allow them to go on solo rides. Sabari is clearly depressed for years, but we don't get to know if his parents tried to help him or not. Similarly, Praveenah, despite getting major surgery done, travels alone at high altitudes, where her body is put to the utmost test. Some of these glaring errors make 'Minmini' an unsatisfying watch.

That said, 'Minmini's' strongest asset is the performances of the lead actors, played by Praveen Kishore, Gaurav Kaalai and Esther Anil. We see them growing up from their school days to their 20s. It also raises questions about whether the impact would be the same if a different set of actors played their grown-up versions.

AR Rahman's daughter, Khatija, makes a great debut as a composer. Her background score is subtle in many places and moves along with the story. Cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa, who also doubled up as a producer, captured the landscape of the Himalayan mountain range in its glory. It almost makes you want to go on a trip.

'Minmini' is director Halitha Shameem's weakest script yet. However, it is saved by the performances and technical finesse. 2 out of 5 stars for 'Minmini'.
