Do you know that there is a Pi Day celebration in the world of Mathematics?

It is observed on the 14th of March every year because it is the first three significant figures of pi (π).

If you have paid attention during your Maths lessons, you probably will know the significance of significant figures when you are writing down your answers for your Maths examinations.

This same principle applies even when you have decided to take Maths as a STPM subject for your Form 6 studies.

In this article, we will be reviewing the STPM Maths subjects in terms of their significance, examination format, syllabus as well as practical ways to excel in them.

Andrew

Why Is It Relevant To Take STPM Maths (T/M) For Your Form Six Studies?

First of all, let's talk about the differences between the two Maths subjects that are offered in STPM.

STPM Mathematics (T) stands for Technology and is taken by Science stream students (compulsory).

STPM Mathematics (M) stands for Management and is taken by Art stream students (optional).

Basically, these two Maths subjects seek to fulfil the objective to enable students to acquire problem-solving skills and equip students with a foundational understanding of mathematical thinking and concepts before they proceed to related programmes for their tertiary level education.

Here are 3 main reasons why you should include Maths as one of your subjects in STPM.

1. You enjoy and excel in Mathematics

In other words, Mathematics fascinates you and you find that it's easier to focus during the lessons by recognizing patterns, applying formulas and equations. That goes to say, you probably did well for your SPM Maths and Additional Maths subjects too. Hence, it is quite natural for you to continue to study Maths because you get to dive deeper and wider into this subject .

Mathematics is the most beautiful and most powerful creation of the human spirit. -Stefan Banach

2. You will have a strong foundation of Pre-University Maths

Trust us when we say that the newly revised Mathematics (T) and Mathematics (M) syllabus is comprehensive. You will see in the later paragraphs that you get to study 6 chapters each semester and you will be tested in terms of central assessments (written tests) and school-based assignments for coursework assessments.

In total, you will study 18 chapters covering various topics . You will also be graded in terms of grade point average (GPA) every semester, which is similar to other Pre-University programmes.

3. You would want to have further study in a Mathematics-related field for your degree

As a Form 6 student, you would have noticed that most schools have already listed a combination of subjects according to Art/ Science streams to accommodate what students intend to study for their degree.

You may refer to the below table to look at the combination of subjects that are offered and match them with your desired career choice/programme that you want to study later.

What Is The Latest Syllabus For STPM Maths (T)?

If you have decided to take Science stream for your Form 6 studies, you naturally have to take STPM Maths (T) as one of the subjects. There are 6 chapters each semester, with each semester focusing on a different theme.

What sets the syllabus of STPM Maths (T) and STPM Maths (M) apart is the inclusion of Geometry topics in the first semester and also several different topics of Calculus and Statistics as shown below.

form 6 stpm maths

We have highlighted some of the common topics of both Maths (T) and Maths (M) in the lists below for your reference. In some ways, the topics do overlap but if you look closer, you will see that some of them are different.

Let's look at what you'll learn in STPM Maths (T).

First Term: Algebra and Geometry [954/1 Paper 1]

  • Chapter 1 Functions
  • Chapter 2 Sequences and Series
  • Chapter 3 Matrices
  • Chapter 4 Complex Numbers
  • Chapter 5 Analytic Geometry
  • Chapter 6 Vectors

Second Term: Calculus [954/2 Paper 2]

  • Chapter 7 Limits and Continuity
  • Chapter 8 Differentiation
  • Chapter 9 Integration

  • Chapter 13 Data Description
  • Chapter 14 Probability
  • Chapter 15 Probability Distributions
  • Chapter 16 Sampling and Estimation
  • Chapter 17 Hypothesis Testing
  • Chapter 18 Chi-squared Tests

Improve your understanding and question-answering techniques on these topics through the practice of past year papers collection of STPM Maths .

What Topics Will You Cover For STPM Maths (M)?

We now move on the syllabus of STPM Maths (M). Out of 18 chapters, this subject share 9 chapters with STPM Maths (T).  However as mentioned earlier, this subject is for Art stream students who would probably take on Business /Finance related programmes in the future.

Just as the name implies, it is Maths for Management. Hence, you will notice that there is a whole different theme for the final semester which focuses on financial and decision mathematics.

How To Be Fully Equipped For Your STPM Maths T/M Paper?

You have now decided which STPM Maths to take according to your subject combinations and desired career pathway. Now let's look at the steps below on you can be ready to score well for your paper.

1. Understand the latest examination format

Since 2012, the Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC) has introduced a new modular system where all Form 6 subjects will be taught over three terms. This means you have to sit for three central examination at the end of each term followed by coursework in between.

The duration for each written test is 1 hour and 30 minutes and the mark allocation is 60%.

You can read further on the complete and latest exam format for STPM (T) and (M) Maths here, which includes the details for the coursework assessment.

2. Revise with physical and non-physical Maths learning resources

Textbooks for three semesters? Checked. Reference books for sample questions? Checked. Past year papers collection and trial papers from other states? Checked. Youtube tutorial videos? Checked. STPM students blogs/social media groups? Checked.

Remember that your revision journey does not have to be a linear process. Be open to various Maths learning materials and get the best out of every learning method.

When you don't feel like looking at textbooks and notes, you can opt to revise through tutorial videos on past year questions.

When you feel like putting what you have learnt in class into test, you can dive into some past year questions.

The period T of a pendulum of l released α radians with the by T =4 l π 1 dθ , 2 2 1 − k 2 sin2 θ ∫length at an angle vertical given g0 where k = sin α and g is the acceleration due to gravity. 2 1 (a) Using the Maclaurin theorem, find the first two non-zero terms in the series expansion of 1 . 1 − k 2 sin2 θ (b) Show that the period of the pendulum is given by T1 ≈ 2π ℓ ⎜⎝⎜⎛1 + π2 sin 2 α ⎟⎞⎟⎠ . g 24 2 ( )2 − 1 α Using binomial expansion of 1 − k 2 sin2 θ 2 , where k ≈ 2 , show that the period of the pendulum is T2 ≈ 2π ℓ ⎜⎜⎝⎛1 + α2 ⎠⎟⎟⎞ . g 16 3 Tabulate T1 and T2 for a one meter pendulum, with g =10 m s−2 for different values of α in each of following cases; (a) 0.01 ≤ α ≤ 0.50 , (b) 1.0 ≤ α ≤ 2.5. STPM 2017 - 954/4/P3 3 [Turn over RESTRICTED RESTRICTED MATHEMATICS (T) COURSEWORK STPM 2017 Assignment C: Mathematical Modelling It is reported that Malaysian youths spend many hours daily to access the social media such as Facebook and WhatsApp. This phenomenon leads to deterioration of social ties and values. In this assignment, you are required to conduct a study on the time spent daily by the students in your school to access the social media. 1 (a) Discuss the various sampling techniques that can be used to collect data. (b) Choose a suitable sampling technique to collect data on time spent daily (in minutes) for a random sample of n students. 2 Construct three confidence intervals for the mean time spent daily by students in your school to access the social media. Interpret your results. 3 Determine whether the average time spent daily by the students in your school to access the social media is at least three hours. 4 State any assumptions made in Task 2 and Task 3. Discuss the validity of your results. STPM 2017 - 954/4/P3 4 RESTRICTED
