Kindergarten Math Problems, Worksheets & Games

Kindergarten Math Problems, Worksheets & Games

These kindergarten math problems will help you teach early math skills in a fun, interactive way! In this blog post, you'll find printable worksheets, task cards, and games to make math hands-on and engaging.

Kindergarten is one of the most critical years for young learners. This is where we build a strong foundation in number sense, teach the most basic operations, and give names to the shapes in the world around us.

kindergarten problem solving math

Because this time is so important, we must use evidence-based instructional practices that genuinely support our students' growth while also providing them with exciting, engaging activities to get them thinking and moving! These kindergarten math problems and resources were designed to be easy for you to prepare, developmentally appropriate and engaging for kids, and aligned with your state or national instructional goals.

kindergarten problem solving math

Although many of the resources are available in my shop or Freebee Library, they are all included as part of The Hive!  The Hive  is an all-in-one digital teacher planner with thousands of printable resources, videos, and interactive digital learning tools which you can schedule into your day or pull up at a moment's notice. It's teaching smarter, not harder!

If you're teaching primary math this year, you'll also love the mathematics learning programs we have created for K-2! You'll find carefully designed lesson plans with differentiation strategies, matching resources, and activities. Just log in, search for the skill you're covering, and use it instantly!

Printable Kindergarten Math Problems & Activities

Our kindergarten kids have a lot of learning to do this year. These printable and interactive resources are the perfect tools to support them in that process.

Number Recognition

This is where it all starts! One of our first steps is to help our kindergarten students understand that each numeral represents a specific number of units. I recommend leaning heavily on manipulatives, like dominoes, bear counters, the place value chart, ten frames, dice, and more.

The more representations, the more deeply your students will understand how numbers work. The following printable kindergarten math worksheets are a great place to start!

Number Printable Worksheets - These print-and-go worksheets are perfect for kindergarten!

kindergarten problem solving math

There are several different levels, so you can make them more complex as students learn. They can even be used as play dough mats or tracing pages!

kindergarten problem solving math

Number Match - There are four spaces on each numbered mat, and students find images matching each number from a bank of cards. I love these for small groups or independent practice!

kindergarten problem solving math

Number Hexagons - These task cards are perfect for a math center or maths rotations! Just match the numeral with the corresponding image.

kindergarten problem solving math

Number Match Ice Cream Game - In this game, the cones show the number, and students must find that number of scoops with different representations of the number. It's so helpful for consolidating both number identification skills and counting skills at the same time!

kindergarten problem solving math

Swat the Fly Number Templates - This freebie is a fun, hands-on way to help students practice identifying numerals. I like to print these out and place them around the room, and have students say the name of the number as they swat it.

kindergarten problem solving math

Get even more kindergarten number writing practice with these templates and activities! They're great for preschool, too.

One of the most important concepts young students learn is the idea of place value, which requires plenty of meaningful opportunities with number recognition and counting. Although many of the activities above can be used for counting, too, these ones focus on this specific skill.

Disappearing Digits - Kids fill in the missing numbers on these math charts. I like to put these in pocket sleeves to use them again and again!

kindergarten problem solving math

Monster Eyes Counting - These free kindergarten math worksheets so much fun! Have your kids add the correct number of googly eyes to the monster bodies. They'll love arranging the eyes in different ways, which is a great way to practise those fine motor skills, too!

kindergarten problem solving math

Build a Fence - Students line up the popsicle sticks in number order to complete the fence. It's simple, but it works!

kindergarten problem solving math

I Spy & Count   - Students will love playing I Spy and consolidating their early number skills with these I Spy and Count Mats!

kindergarten problem solving math

Numbers Before & After   - This open-ended activity can be used to consolidate early number and counting skills, as students identify the number/s after a given number. Students roll a dice and write the 4 numbers that come after. You can further differentiate by the number of dice used, or the number of sides on the dice.

kindergarten problem solving math

Simple Addition

We spend a lot of time focusing on addition skills in the early years, as this concept is the foundation of subtraction and multiplication in later years.

We have created units for every element of K-2 math in The Hive, so you can easily pull up any of the lesson plans, slides, games, videos, and printables to support your instruction any time you need them! There are also loads of digital learning tools for your maths lessons, such as digital counters, manipulatives, ten frames, place value charts and more.

The following activities are just some of the hundreds of activities included in The Hive's K-2 mathematics units.

Finger Addition 1-10 - The kindergarten worksheets are a great bridge between finger counting and using symbolic representations! They can even count along with their own hands.

kindergarten problem solving math

Counting On Task Cards - These cards make it easy to practise counting on, which is one of many addition strategies which we teach to our kindergarten students.

kindergarten problem solving math

Addition Towers - Give your students a pile of unifix cubes to solve each of the math problems. Since this task is open-ended, they'll naturally find several different ways to solve each problem. These would be wonderful for math talks!

Number Line Addition Task Cards - The number line is such a useful concept to teach early on, especially as it connects to telling time and measurement later on. These free task cards use the jump strategy to practise addition up to 20.

kindergarten problem solving math

Our Hive members can also use our digital number line to explicitly teach this concept too!

kindergarten problem solving math

Addition Stories - These open-ended worksheets are one of my favourite activities! Kids can use these kindergarten worksheets as a backdrop to create their own story problems or you can fill out the sheet yourself and see how many different word problems your students can come up with based on the image.

kindergarten problem solving math

This would be great for a daily math discussion! You can even  have your student of the day create their own custom scene.

kindergarten problem solving math

Part Part Whole Activities

Students create different totals using the legs of characters from the book. See if they can find different ways to make the same total!  Print multiple sets of the picture cards for students to combine to create different totals:

kindergarten problem solving math

Number Bond Activities

Students can demonstrate their understanding of number bonds to 5, 10 and 20 with these differentiated number bond task cards.

kindergarten problem solving math

Simple Subtraction

Once students understand addition as combining parts to find the whole, they're ready for subtraction. These highly visual examples will give them great practice!

Takeaway Trash - This game highlights the idea that subtraction is about taking numbers apart. Students must "sweep" the subtracted part into the recycling bin to see what's left. Great for stations!

kindergarten problem solving math

Finger Subtraction Templates - These templates are much cleaner than colouring on your fingers but achieve the same effect.

kindergarten problem solving math

Hungry Shark Subtraction Mats - I love that these sheets model how to complete subtraction word problems and use the horizontal form at the same time. The repetition will really help reinforce these skills!

kindergarten problem solving math

Counter Subtraction - The counters are a great next step after counting with fingers. The counters are still visual, but they're a little more abstract. Since these worksheets are open-ended, they can be used over and over with different numbers.

 Let’s dive in!

Section 1: Counting

kindergarten problem solving math

Counting helps us understand numbers and how many things we have, like siblings or how many steps we take.

Section 2: Addition & Subtraction

Adding numbers helps us combine different amounts to find the sum, giving us the result of putting them together. Subtraction allows us to see the difference between two numbers by subtracting one value from another, helping us understand the remaining amount.

Section 3: Place Value

Ten frames show us the value of each digit in a number, helping us understand how they add up to make a bigger number.

1. Look at the ten frames. What number do you see?

KINDERGARTEN MATH PROBLEM SOLVING

Organize your routines to promote plenty of kindergarten math problem solving.

It’ll help children make sense of math concepts as they solve problems using real life objects and everyday situations that they can relate to.

When children learn to recognize a problem, try a few problem solving strategies, suggest a variety of solutions to solve the problem, and finally, test their ideas. They will gain confidence and have a chance to use skills that they have learned previously.

Keep Math Problem Solving Activities Simple

kindergarten_problem_solving

  • Jars from pasta sauce and other products work well also.
  • Ask parents to save clean jar lids that are large enough to hold 3 one-inch blocks. Check there are no sharp edges.
  • Cups are too deep for the following activities as the children cannot easily see how many counters they have put into each cup.

Literature based problem solving games…

kindergarten_problem_soving_Rabbit

Game – Birthday party across the river

Set up the problem by reading a book such as Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present.

kindergarten problem solving math

After reading it, talk about:

  • What was the little girl’s problem?
  • What did she do to solve it?
  • How did Mr. Rabbit help?
  • How did they solve the problem?

Boats and River Game

  • Boats – One jar lid per child (such as the ones that pasta sauce comes in) that hold 3 one-inch Unifix™ cubes. The lids represent the boats.
  • Presents – Ten one-inch Unifix™ cubes for each student. These represent the presents. Vary the number of blocks, depending on the children’s abilities.
  • 1/2 sheet of blue construction paper cut lengthwise – this is the river
  • Recording sheet and pencils
  • Introduce the problem – Tell your students that you are pretending that all ten of Mr. Rabbit’s  presents (cubes) have to get across the river for a birthday party. The presents will have to go in the boats (jar lids) but can not be stacked on top of each other or they will fall in the water. Only 3 presents can fit into a boat but all the presents have to get to the party.
  • How many trips across the river does your boat need to take?
  • Each child loads their boat with 3 cubes and take them across the river then unloads their boat
  • Children record each trip with a tally line.
  • Vary the number of blocks with each game

Sharing type problem solving …

  • Counters, blocks or crackers
  • Small paper plates – 4 per child
  • Lids and blocks as above

Focus on different ways of solving the problems. Vary the games and materials each time:

  • Game #1 – Say to the children – “You have 4 plates, one for each friend, and 12 crackers. How can you make sure that all your friends get the same number of crackers?”
  • Game #2 – Each child gets 4 lids and 12 blocks. “How you can put the blocks into the lids so all the lids have the same number of blocks?”
  • Game #3 – Each child gets 2 plates. Goldfish type crackers are in bowls near the children. “How can we figure out how many crackers we will need if each plate has 10 crackers?”

Seating & PE equipment type kindergarten problem solving …

One group of children watches while the other group acts out the problem.

Prompt with suggestions as necessary. E.G. How could we figure that out? All the children can contribute ideas to solve these types of problems.

#1 – Four children can sit around each table. We have 12 children. How can we figure out how many tables we need so everybody can sit down?

#2 – We have 6 balls and 12 children. How can we share the balls so all the children get to play with the same number of balls?

#3 – This group has 4 children. If each child jumps 3 times, how can we keep track of how many jumps will they jump all together?

Extra tips for educators

Tip – Save these types of problems for after the children have had plenty of activity and are ready to sit and rest for a while.

Spatial type problem solving

  • Pattern blocks

Ask questions such as the ones below.

1. How many ways can you make a bird (or flower or star…) using only 5 pattern blocks? Children spend 5 minutes making birds. Have them count the number of pattern blocks in each bird as they sometimes get carried away and end up making a bird with many more blocks!

kindergarten_math_problem_solving

2. Show me how you can make 3 different stars can with your pattern blocks?

kindergarten_math_problem_solving

Recording problem solving activities

Prompt students to record the results of most activities, even if they are only able to make a simple picture.

problem_solving_bird

Many opportunities for math problem solving will arise in a regular preschool or kindergarten day.

  • Keep problem solving simple and age appropriate
  • Focus on problems that have open-ended results
  • If children get frustrated, give them the option of leaving the problem and coming back to it later

Awesome Math Strategies for Kindergarten and the 6 Questions to Ask Your Small Group

' src=

Teaching math strategies in kindergarten may be easier than you think. Here are the top math strategies for kindergarten that you can use in your lessons and the questions you should be asking.

Awesome Math Strategies for Kindergarten to Try Right Now

I’ve got everything I’m sharing with you today wrapped up in my Guided Math Pack for kindergarten . That way you can use these math strategies for kindergarten easily.

What are math strategies in kindergarten

You should know that these math strategies for kindergarten came from the Kindergarten Common Core Standards . There is a whole section called “ Mathematical Practice ” that lists the standards below.

Now hang with me. Here are the standards as they are written out. They are {ahem} super exciting so I won’t be offended if you just want to jump past this list.

  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  • Model with mathematics.
  • Use appropriate tools strategically.
  • Attend to precision.
  • Look for and make use of structure.
  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Now, if you ask me – these are hardly kindergarten friendly.

But, as I planned out my guided math curriculum for kindergarten  I realized that I needed to make use of them. I was supposed to be teaching them, after all.

How I made them kid-friendly

In order to make use of those silly-stated standards, I desperately needed to make them more kinder-friendly. So each standard got rephrased into a strategy or approach that we could actually use.

For example,

  • “Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others” became “tell and explain”
  • “Attend to precision” became “check my work”

Awesome Math Strategies for Kindergarten to Try Right Now - math strategy posters or cards

And those kinder-friendly phrases became go-to things for me.

I’m not kidding. Since I was introducing and using them during small group lessons , I was able to refer to them regularly and prompt students with them.

How you can use pictures to teach strategies

Since I work with beginning readers and non-readers in kindergarten, I made icons or symbols for each strategy. This works on the same principle as illustrating  guided reading strategies .

Awesome Math Strategies in posters for kindergarten

I turned each strategy into posters and cards.

These were integrated into the math prompts my students did in our math journals . They would practice one strategy each time – at the same time as working on content.

Awesome Math Strategies for Kindergarten - built right into math prompts

Questions to ask your small math groups

What do these math strategies mean for teaching in small groups?

Well, that meant I had questions I could ask.

  • “How can you show what you are thinking?”
  • “What tools did you use to figure this out?”
  • “Tell us about your thinking. What did you notice?”
  • “What would make good sense?”
  • “What could you try?”
  • “What do you notice?”

Rather than tell my students what to do – or how to solve – I could ask questions to help direct their thinking.

Awesome Math Strategies for Kindergarten built right into lesson plan template

I added these math strategies for kindergarten right into my lesson plan templates too.

If you like these math strategies for kindergarten all done for you – you can get the:

  • strategy posters and cards
  • guiding questions to ask based on the strategies
  • math journals prompts with strategies listed
  • lesson plan templates with strategies listed

How Our Kindergarten Math Curriculum Makes Learning Fun and Easy

Finding the right lessons, worksheets, and activities to meet kindergarten math standards can be tough. The Kindergarten Mindful Math curriculum is the perfect resource for your teaching needs. It makes math fun, easy to teach, and effective.

  • Kindergarten Math Curriculum

I often struggled to teach math concepts in a fun and effective way, helping students understand more than just memorizing steps. When I was younger, I learned many “math tricks” that made things easier in elementary school but didn’t explain why they worked. As a teacher, I realized my students needed to learn things differently, math concepts broken down into smaller steps with simple tasks and repeated.

That’s why I developed a kindergarten math curriculum centered around how young children learn best.

***Most primary teachers will say that kindergartners are a “different breed.” They learn differently than older children. As a result, they thrive on hands-on activities, play-based learning, and visual aids to understand new concepts. Their short attention spans and need for movement require engaging and interactive lessons. This is why the Kindergarten Mindful Math Curriculum is so helpful—it’s designed to be flexible, incorporating a variety of activities, manipulatives, and visual aids that cater to young learners’ developmental needs, making math fun and accessible for them.

Today, we’re exploring the kindergarten Mindful Math Program. A wonderful curriculum that brings excitement and effectiveness to your kindergarten math block. Planning your math lessons and activities will become much easier and more enjoyable.

Mindful Math is a comprehensive curriculum designed for kindergarten through third grade. For kindergarten, it includes 10 units, each with over 10 lessons aimed at helping young learners grasp essential math concepts and standards with plenty of hands-on activities, games, and more to make learning child-centered and fun.

Each unit in this kindergarten math curriculum focuses on nurturing cognitive skills and provides educators with a complete toolkit, so there’s no need for extra materials. With Mindful Math, you’re not just teaching math; you’re developing confident and fluent math thinkers right from the beginning of their schooling. You are helping them build a solid mathematical foundation.

different activities from the kindergarten math curriculum

The Mindful Math Kindergarten program consists of 10 units that cover the essential math skills and standards for kindergarten students. Each unit is designed to help teachers help their students understand and succeed in math.

Each unit includes fun math activities and hands-on lessons that can be easily broken down into mini-lessons, ensuring our youngest students can gain valuable math knowledge within a short amount of time.

The lessons are designed to make learning math interesting and engaging. Students will solve problems, use their critical thinking skills, and work with peers in whole and small-group settings. All while having the opportunity to participate in hands-on games, activities, and more!

The curriculum follows educational standards like the U.S. Common Core and fits well with Canadian math curriculums in British Columbia and Ontario . It’s also adaptable to math curriculums used worldwide, making it useful for teachers everywhere.

The 10 math units cover all topics taught in kindergarten math, including:

  • Numbers to 5
  • Numbers to 10
  • Numbers 11-20
  • Addition to 10
  • Subtraction to 10
  • Geometry & Shapes
  • Counting to 100
  • Measurement & Time to the Hour
  • Graphing & Sorting
  • Patterning

Kindergarten Mindful Math Curriculum Overview

Our kindergarten math curriculum goes beyond simple worksheets and posters—it’s a complete program designed for simple implementation and success!

Each unit includes detailed kindergarten math lesson plans. These plans cover standards, engaging activities, group discussions, and more.

Our curriculum provides all the materials you need for effective teaching and student learning. You’ll have access to a variety of math tools, such as manipulatives, charts, number lines, and more. These tools enhance engagement and deepen understanding.

I can poster for the classroom

Also included are ‘I Can’ posters to encourage a growth mindset and clarify learning goals. These posters are designed with kindergarteners in mind, using language that’s easy for young students to understand and apply.

Mindful Math task cards are perfect for quick math warm-up activities or as independent exit tickets. They feature a range of tasks that reinforce skills taught in previous lessons, helping to enhance fluency. They also encourage kindergarteners to practice mindful mathematical thinking.

Vocabulary cards for math in kindergarten help kids learn important math words. Each card has a key math term and a simple definition. By using these cards often, kindergartners can learn and remember new math vocabulary in a concrete way, which makes it easier for them to understand and talk about math ideas as they grow.

Math mats are interactive ways for students to practice their skills. They make learning fun and effective. By incorporating colorful visuals and hands-on tasks, math mats help reinforce key concepts while keeping students actively involved in their learning process.

Flashcards are wonderful for developing kindergarten students’ mental math abilities and quick recall. They can be used in small groups, during whole group activities, with partners, or at math centers. Each lesson plan provides instructions on how to use and effectively introduce them to students.

Number talks are short, daily exercises that help kindergartners improve in math. The teacher gives a problem, and students share different solutions. This helps them become more confident, improve their problem-solving skills, and learn that there can be many ways to find an answer. Number talks create a friendly environment where kids learn to explain their thinking and listen to others, making math easier to understand.

In Kindergarten Mindful Math , each lesson includes independent math practice pages for students to complete independently. These kindergarten math worksheets reinforce learning and help students retain key concepts. They are designed with varying difficulty levels to suit every student’s needs and abilities.

kindergarten math worksheet

Math journals are great tools for helping kindergartners understand and practice math. In these journals, kids can write or draw their answers to math problems, showing how they solve them. This helps them think more deeply about math and remember what they’ve learned.

Math journals also allow teachers to see how each student is doing and where they might need extra help. Using them makes learning math more personal and fun for young students.

In the kindergarten math curriculum, students engage in hands-on math activities independently, in small groups, or with partners. They enjoy fun math games, interactive centers, and engaging worksheets that cater to various learning preferences.

These activities are student favorites, tried and loved! Each lesson offers different games and centers, ensuring every student can participate and feel successful.

They also allow students to be more independent. Students can monitor their comprehension of the math topics and their behavior while working independently, with partners, and in small groups. Fostering independence in the classroom is a favorite in kindergarten!

math graphing activity inside of a binder with a child measuring different objects

After each lesson, you may choose to give a quick math assessment. Students complete a brief activity independently or in small groups to demonstrate their understanding and highlight areas needing further support. This is especially important in kindergarten due to the range of skills students must learn before heading to 1st grade.

kindergarten math quick check for graphing

Let’s create a timeline for effectively using the Kindergarten Mindful Math Program . I suggest dedicating a month to teaching each unit of Mindful Math, providing a unique focus for every month of the school year.

Introduce a new lesson every other day to allow ample time to explore content, engage in activities, and practice skills. This pacing turns each lesson into a two-day experience, fostering repeated practice and enhancing fluency in mathematical concepts.

Each lesson typically lasts 45-60 minutes. This time will ensure you cover warm-ups, mental math, and whole-group instruction. Timing may vary based on lesson complexity and student comprehension.

It is always important to prioritize hands-on practice. You want to always make sure you are allowing time for independent work, centers, and games within this timeframe. This kindergarten math curriculum offers many hands-on activities, games, and centers. So, plenty of time will be needed to ensure students get the opportunity for some hands-on practice. The best part is that the program offers flexibility to extend lessons during math blocks.

Here’s a suggested breakdown:

  • Day 1 (45-60 minutes): Start with math warm-up activities using task cards and math journal prompts. Followed by mental math exercises and a whole-group lesson introducing the core concept. After completing the whole group lesson, students can rotate through hands-on activities, centers, etc. These will continue during tomorrow’s lesson.
  • Day 2 (45-60 minutes): Begin with a mental math review to reinforce previous learning. Then, move to independent practice and hands-on activities like centers and games. End with quick checks to assess comprehension.

Remember, each lesson component can be adapted to meet students’ needs effectively and support diverse learning styles.

To learn how to organize your math lessons effectively, check out my guide on guided math schedules and planning templates . It will help you get the most out of the Mindful Math Program.

Getting Organized

Let’s organize everything for the Mindful Math journey. Each unit provides detailed guidance on how to use and prepare every part of the program.

Start by preparing your printing. Print out all components of the Mindful Math program ahead of time. For durability, use white or colored cardstock for activities, posters, task cards, and quick checks. Laminate and cut these materials so they’re ready for your lessons.

pattern book with child working on it.

Stay organized with binders. Create one binder for each unit of Mindful Math, using the provided covers and spines for a consistent look. Keep these binders neatly on shelves or bins along with other necessary materials. Inside each binder, store lesson plans, practice worksheets, journal prompts, and materials in zipper pouches or plastic holders—whatever works best for you.

Prepare student workbooks for each unit containing the practice worksheets they must complete. Use the provided student workbook covers for a polished look. Use math journals or notebooks as needed for journal prompts and practice sheets.

Math manipulatives are essential for hands-on learning. Use provided materials or print your own to make learning concrete and engaging.

Bins or tubs are great for keeping everything together, and we all know kindergarten teachers like to be organized! Use them to store math manipulatives, binders, student workbooks, and any math books you need for each unit—all neatly contained and easily accessible.
