How to Use Your iPhone as a Slideshow Remote Control

When you make presentations at client meetings or conferences, you may use an electronic slideshow to support your spoken words, and that slideshow is more than likely projected on a large monitor or projector screen connected to your computer. Download the appropriate app, and you can use your iPhone as the remote control.

The advantage of the iPhone as remote control is that you can see the upcoming slide, so even if you walk away from your computer, perhaps to be closer to your audience or handle a 3D prop, you can still see your presenter notes — okay, maybe juggling your iPhone and a 3D prop wouldn’t be all that easy, but you get the point.

Here's how to work with a presentation created in Keynote on your Mac or iPad and controlled with Keynote Remote on your iPhone. First, create your presentation in Keynote and download Keynote Remote from the App Store. Follow these steps to set it up:

Connect both your Mac and your iPhone to the same Wi-Fi network.

Open your presentation in Keynote from your Mac; it can be a file that you keep remotely on iCloud or locally on your Mac.

If you are projecting your presentation from your Mac to another display or video projection system, you can still use your iPhone as the remote controller.

Tap Keynote Remote on your iPhone.

A dialog (shown in the following figure) asks if you want to allow Keynote to accept incoming connections. Click Allow.

Tap Settings in the upper left corner to open the Keynote Remote settings, as shown in this figure.

Tap Presenter Notes to the On position.

Tap Play Slideshow in your iPhone, as shown in the following figure.

Your presentation appears on your iPhone, as shown in this figure.

Swipe across the iPhone screen to move from one slide to the next.

If you have builds or animation in your presentation, each movement appears singly on your iPhone, and the next one is activated when you swipe.

(Optional) Tap the Options button to jump to the first slide, end the slideshow, or open the Settings screen, as shown in this figure.

When you end your slideshow from either your iPhone or your Mac, it closes on the other device.

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to use your iPhone or iPad as a wireless remote for controlling a Keynote presentation on your Mac.

One of the nice luxury features that Apple includes with its Keynote presentation software is the ability to use the iOS mobile app as a remote for giving presentations from Keynote on your computer.

It’s a great tool for educators and students to use in the classroom, but such abilities also work great in various work environments unrelated to educational institutions, such as business meetings at work.

Use iPhone or iPad as a wireless remote for your Keynote presentation on Mac

1) Download the Keynote app on both your iOS device and your Mac .

2) Make sure that your iOS device and Mac are on the same Wi-Fi network or that both have Bluetooth enabled, and then open the Keynote app on both your iPhone or iPad and Mac.

3) From the Mac Keynote app, open a presentation file that you wish to control remotely.

4) From the iOS app, tap the Remote button in the top right of the Presentation Manager.

5) From the next pane, tap the Continue button and hit Allow if Keynote asks your permission to find and connect to devices on your local network.

6) Your iOS device is now in pairing mode and is ready to be found by your Mac.

7) Now, from the top menu bar of the Keynote app on your Mac, click Keynote > Settings or Preferences .

8) Go to the Remotes tab from the Keynote preferences window, check the Enable box, and click on the Link button to the right of your iPhone or iPad’s name.

9) Your Mac will show you a number. Confirm that the same number appears on your iOS device, and if it does, click on the blue Confirm button.

10) Now, your Mac will show that your iOS device has been linked.

11) Your iPhone should show confirmation as well, so tap on the green Play button.

12) Your mobile Keynote app from your iOS device should now show the presentation you have opened in the Keynote app on your Mac.

• Tap or swipe right to left to go to the next slide.
• Swipe left to right to go to the previous slide.
• You can change the view by tapping the Layout Options button from the top.
• You can tap the slide number from the top left to see all slides in a list and tap one to select it.
• After you finish, tap X from the top right.

Annotate your presentation

Not only can you control your Keynote presentation by swiping to move from slide to slide, but you can also annotate and do all sorts of other fun stuff while you’re connected to your Keynote app from your iOS device. To do that, tap the annotate button from the top right and then draw on the screen in a chosen color.

Because Keynote is compatible with Microsoft PowerPoint files, you can bet that this method works for presenting PowerPoint files, too, so even if you’re not presenting a Keynote file, as long as you open your PowerPoint file in Keynote on your Mac, you can use this method to share it with your audience from a remote distance from your Mac.

Additionally, Keynote on the iPhone supports an Apple Watch app, which means you can also use your Apple Watch to move back and forth between slides on your Mac.

Excellent except one vital flaw.

The app is working great. Setup is blazing fast. The interface is clean and intuitive. The reason I’m giving it 4 stars is because the app doesn’t support the usage of physical volume buttons for navigating between slides. As a presentation clicker this is a must have feature. Some other remote mouse apps has this feature. If this app adds this feature then I can say with confidence that this is the best app for presentation clicker.

Hey, We've just released a new version (2.3.0) which adds support for switching slides with the volume buttons. You need to enable this feature in settings.

Instructions not included

Instructions are not included with software had to copy the instructions from the separate link on the website. Does give an error upon opening that it’s not safe. That’s a concern as not many know how to allow ports and apps in the firewall allow settings on Windows 10. Should also have the ability to decide if you want to see notes or hide notes on the app Overall it’s nice. For those who are not tech savvy, it may be difficult to setup. Update: was able to get clicker to work. But found the issue was WHERE the file was downloaded/extracted to. Company policy does allow to extract program to desktop, so had to manually move folder to c drive and create a shortcut. Recommend to create an exe to set up properly. Also, purchased pro only to have to pay again for pro plus so I could preview the presentation. Would be nice to have a laser pointer, but not necessary.

Hi, Thanks for using Clicker. What's the error that was shown? Is it a Windows warning for the apps downloaded from the internet? In Clicker Desktop 2.0 and above you don't need to configure firewall manually. Just click on the link "apply recommended configuration" in the app. If there's no WiFi, you should be able to use hotspot created either on your computer or your phone.

So far, the app works as described; I would like to have the ability to turn off the speaker notes if there are none; this way, on a tablet, the preview is larger. Thank you.

Using iPhone as a remote control for PowerPoint presentation on MacBook

iPhone can be used as a remote control for Keynotes presentation on MacBook, however a similar features is more than helpful and should be presented soon, both for bolstering productivity and strengthening the Apple Ecosystem.

This is a user to user support forum and Apple does not participate here. If you are wanting to let Apple know you would like to see a feature, then you need to use the feedback link here, Feedback - iPhone - Apple

Since PowerPoint is not an Apple program, I'm not sure you would find something like that. I use a small remote presenter that uses Bluetooth and carry that with my devices. I can plug the Bluetooth dongle into any computer and use it. But, again, for Apple to know you would like to see that feature, use the link provided.

Play a presentation over the internet in Keynote on iPhone

You can use FaceTime, Webex, Zoom, or another video conferencing app to play your presentation over the internet so everyone you give access to can view it at the same time—on their own devices, wherever they are. As the presenter, you control when the presentation starts and stops. You can also open the presenter display to help you deliver your presentation, while viewers see only the shared slideshow window.

If you haven’t already started your video conferencing call, start it now. When you’re ready to share your presentation, do one of the following:

To advance through the presentation, do any of the following:

Go to the next slide: Tap the slide.

Go the previous slide or build: Swipe right. Avoid the left edge of the screen as you swipe, so the slide navigator doesn’t appear.

Jump to a different slide: Tap the left side of the screen to show the slide navigator, then tap the slide you want. You may need to swipe up or down to see all the slides. Tap anywhere on the slide to hide the slide navigator. Even if your device is connected to an external display, the slide navigator appears only on the device.
