'Heaven' movie review: A compelling thriller

'Heaven' stars Suraj Venjaramoodu in the role of Circle Inspector Peter Kurishingal, a man who finds refuge in his work post the death of his wife. He relies on intelligence and presence of mind to solve cases and spews socially responsible statements along the way. The excessive commitment to his work makes him a father who seldom shows up for his son. And when he finally shows his affection to him, it is too late.

The investigation of the murder of Sebin (Peter’s son), his classmate and her entire family, forms the central plot of the film. Peter explores the dualities of power and vulnerability. Suraj plays the part with a certain effortlessness that audiences have come to expect from him ever since his cameo in 'Action Hero Biju'. Jaffer Iduki delivers another standout performance. Alencier, Joy Mathew, Sudeesh, Sudev Nair and the rest of the cast do precisely what is required from them.

An audience that is not familiar with Malayalam cinema may find the first half a bit slow, but to regular viewers, 'Heaven' is engaging enough. The police procedure and forensics seem accurate, at least to the untrained eye. The film does not insult the intelligence of the audience at any point but it does not pose a challenge either.

Cinematographer Vinod Illampally sets the appropriate colour tone for the film. The camera work is particularly commendable in the scene in the first half where Peter is confronted with the reality of his son’s death, the shot captures Suraj’s facial expressions and body language to produce maximum impact. In contrast, the camera assumes a passive role in the second half, where some shots seem to be arranged to match the pacing set by the background music.

Throughout the second half, the bgm is expected to make up for the inadequacies in the screenplay. Gopi Sundar’s music is fine, with the only track standing out being the one involving the police drum roll.

Debutant director Unni Govindraj has co-written the film with PS Subramanian. The duo manages to create a suspense thriller that is more realistic than most popular films in the genre. It may not be in the league of films like 'Drishyam' but 'Heaven' is certainly a compelling one-time watch.

Heaven, A Promising Investigation Thriller Movie, Now Streaming On Disney+ Hotstar

Heaven , now streaming on Disney+Hotstar. National Award winner Suraj Venjaramood's unwavering performance serving as its centrepiece. The movie's script was written by P.S. Subramanian in collaboration with Unni Govindaraj, a debutant director. The movie's producer is A.D. Sreekumar.

The film revolves around Suraj's character as CI Peter Kurishingal. The central focus of the film is Peter's quest for clarification on various questions raised by a tragedy in his personal life. Suraj Venjaramood, who played the central character, said that the thrilling script attracted him to this film.

He also added that the experience of P.S. Subramanian's working as Circle Inspector in Kerala Police, has helped give the audience a better experience. Unni Govindaraj, the film's director, commented that the film's technical department's excellence and the actors' performances boosted his confidence.

Vinod Illampally is in charge of the cinematography and the music is composed by Gopi Sundar. Apart from Suraj Venjaramood, Sudheesh, Alencier, Joy Mathew, Jafar Idukki, Nimisha Sajayan, Vinaya Prasad, Sudev Nair and other stars have also given commendable performances in the film.

Heaven Movie Review: Suraj Venjaramoodu anchors a decent procedural that could have been better

There is an NCC camp happening inside a forest in Kerala. The bus is filled with young people, who are raring to prove a point to the world. A guy and a girl steal furtive glances, and his insecurity wants to make him clarify an important point with his friend sitting next to him. “Is she looking at me or you,” he asks his friend. The friend looks at the girl and breaks the bad news to the guy. “She is looking at me only…” and then we see the friend and the girl go on a long walk in the camp, much to the chagrin of the guy who feels embarrassed and hurt. In the process of this walk, and getting cozy with each other… BAM! There’s a dead body. Now, it is alright to think if the person killed is one of these three. It is also alright to think that one of these three would have a serious bearing on the investigation that would follow. It is also alright to think that these opening scenes would be a Chekov’s Gun. But once the dead body is found by the police, and the investigations happen, we understand that the gun just draws blanks. This is a consistent theme in Suraj Venjaramoodu-fronted cop drama, Heaven . Interesting plot points are established only to fizzle out in the quest for that final act.

In fact, we are invested in almost everything that happens on screen, but the makers seem to be in a hurry to move on. There are places that needed a bit more finesse, and there are places that needed a bit of mellowing down. Not able to pick the fine line in between proves to be a problem for director Unni Govindaraj.

Heaven begins with that aforementioned murder, and that is when we are first introduced to Suraj’s Peter Kurishingal, who is arrested for the murder. We soon see one other set of murders where Peter Kurishingal is the investigating officer. This dichotomy would have worked better if there were intercutting narratives to see how the past and present unfold. However, once the past narrative begins, we actually forget how the film started. This is also because the flashback portions are where the investigations happen, and it is quite engaging. The way Peter battles his inner demons, swallows his overwhelming sadness, and gets to the bottom of the case is a decent procedural. Peter is aided by his fellow cops like Alencier Ley Lopez as he finds out who facilitated the destruction of the fabric of his close-knit family. 

The performances are largely convincing, and the characters played by Jaffer Idukki, Deepak Parambol, Sudheesh, and Vinaya Prasad aid in keeping the investigative drama as taut as possible. Suraj brings quiet dignity to the role of Peter which is a far cry from his other cop roles. The tilt in his walk, and the stiffness that he brings to the table elevate the role from being a one-note character on a revenge spree. The final act springs out of nowhere, but the writing ensures that after an initial few minutes of hesitancy, we buy into that too. This is both the positive and negative of Heaven . We are convinced of watching a decent investigative film, with considerable help from Gopi Sundar’s background score, but time and again, there is a need to reaffirm this faith in the film due to some writing choices. 

This isn’t to say Heaven is a bad film, although that title could have definitely remained just a working title. It isn’t to say Heaven is a great film either considering the various instances where even the red herrings don’t feel red enough even at the time of implantation. Heaven is a decent film that could have been either better or worse, and it is to the credit of the team that it stays safely on the better side of things, and not in creative limbo.

Heaven Trailer Talk: Suraj Venjaramoodu Starrer Promises A Gripping Cop Thriller

Suraj Venjaramoodu, who was last seen in  Jana Gana Mana,  will play a cop in Unni Govindraj's  Heaven.  He plays a serious police officer who takes interest in what appears to be a murder investigation.

However, towards the end of the teaser, he also explains to some people at the police station, "If a woman says No, that means No". So the investigation might also deal with a case of sexual assault. The teaser does not reveal the main crime, but a major piece of evidence is a footprint that is 9 inches long.

Heaven  is directed by Unni Govindraj, and co-written by PS Subramanian. The film is produced by A D Sreekumar, Rema Sreekumar, K Krishnan and T R Raghuraj. Gopi Sundar composes the music, Vinod Illampally handles the cinematography, and Toby John does the editing.

Heaven OTT release date: When and where to watch Suraj Venjaramoodu’s investigative thriller online

Suraj Venjaramoodu’s investigative thriller Heaven, which hit theatres in June this year, is gearing up for its OTT release. The movie, which is helmed by debutant Unni Govindraj, has the National Award-winning actor essaying the role of a police officer.

Scripted by Unni and PS Subramaniam, who is a cop himself, the movie also has Sudev Nair, Alencier Ley Lopez, Sudhish, Padmaraj Ratheesh, Jaffer Idukki, Vinaya Prasad, Shruti Jayan and an extended cameo by Deepak Parambol.

Heaven revolves around circle inspector Peter Kurishingal who finds that his son is murdered along with other victims in between an investigation. How he decides to put his grief on hold and diverts the attention to track the killers and find their motive, form the plot of the movie, which also has drawn references from several investigations carried out by PS Subramaniam in his career as a circle inspector.

The movie, which had Suraj donning the khaki and boots for the second time this year after Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Jana Gana Mana, is currently set to release on Disney+ Hotstar. The movie will release on the streaming platform on August 19.

Suraj also has several releases coming up, including Huguita, which has him teaming up with Dhyan Sreenivasan, Luka Chuppi director Bash Mohammed’s Love Jihad that has the actor essaying the role of an insurance agent and Sunil Ibrahim’s Roy, which revolves around a couple played by the actor and Sija Rose. Roy, which is again a mystery thriller, had concluded shoot last year and is expected to be Suraj’s second direct-to-OTT release after Kaanekkaane that released on Sony LIV.

‘Hi Nanna’ movie review: A reaffirming story of love that conquers everything

Nani, mrunal thakur and composer hesham abdul wahab elevate debut director shouryuv’s emotional drama about love and the play of destiny.

Some stories urge us to suspend our disbelief and give in to their charm. Destiny and the power of love drive debut writer-director Shouryuv’s Telugu film Hi Nanna . This tale that introduces us to beautiful people in picture- perfect settings has a few nostalgic tropes such as a pet dog being a catalyst at crucial times. It is cinematic but comfortingly familiar. The leading man, actor Nani, portrays a single father, wearing his heart on his sleeve and making us well up in tears, and Mrunal Thakur revels in the portrayal of her layered characterisation. Hesham Abdul Wahab’s background score is a foil to this tale that sometimes sounds improbable and demands that we set our cynicism aside. Does it work? How much one enjoys this film depends on whether we accept some of the reveals as the narrative progresses and embrace it with its rough edges.

Viraj (Nani) is a celebrity photographer in Mumbai, living with his six-year-old daughter Mahi (child actor Kiara Khanna) in a house that belongs to architecture magazines (production designer Avinash Kolla and cinematographer Sanu John Varghese whip up an aesthetic visual palette). Viraj’s calendar is choc-a-bloc but he tailors it around his daughter’s requirements. The first few minutes give us an idea of him being a hands-on father. Mahi’s small world with her father, grandfather (Jayaram), pet dog Pluto and Viraj’s friend and colleague Justin (Priyadarshi) looks nearly perfect. However, she is curious about her mother.

Hi Nanna (Telugu)

Shouryuv begins unpacking Viraj’s past in a fairytale manner, in a format that the father uses to tell his daughter bedtime stories, and slowly broaches the bittersweet portions. The writer-director hopes that his audience, too, will patiently listen in and not let the social media-driven short-term attention span get the better of them. He puts Viraj in a spot by making him narrate his past in the presence of Yashna (Mrunal Thakur, voice by Chinmayi), who has befriended Mahi minutes earlier. Slowly, the writer pulls a few tricks from his hat. Events leading up to intermission warrant us to embrace a few old world tropes, particularly about medical conditions and the play of fate.

One can either be dismissive about these trajectories or appreciate how the writer-director uses them to show the contrasting personalities in a relationship. If Viraj is all about hope, his wife has anxiety issues that stem from growing up in a broken home. There are promises made, only to be mocked by destiny. The woman wallows in grief and guilt while the man, also in grief, desperately holds on to a silver lining. 

A sizable portion of the narrative rests on the single father’s resilience. There’s a lovely scene early on between Viraj and his prospective mother-in-law playing out like a been-there-seen-that situation of highlighting economic differences. Viraj counters her in the most emphatic way possible, making us root for him. Nani makes the writing seem even better in the manner in which he portrays the determination and innocence of Viraj who believes in love at first sight and later as the father who will move heaven and earth for his daughter. This is easily Nani’s best in the emotional space since Jersey and he can make you well up long after leaving the hall.

Music composer Hesham Abdul Wahab is a big asset to the film. The songs are hummable and pleasant, but the background score takes the cake. When the strains of ‘Idhe idhe tholisaarila…’ play at different points, it is impossible not to be moved. He also uses the calming notes of the waves and silences where essential.

Mahi’s mother’s story unravels by and by. There’s predictability in these portions that show how a strong romance, despite the chinks in its armour, can overshadow everything else. The banter on the beach and the party song (featuring Shruti Haasan) feel overdrawn. More characters are brought into the fray, like the ones played by Angad Bedi and Viraj Ashwin. A cheeky Kuch Kuch Hota Hai reference is thrown in through a line uttered at the mandap.

We know how the tale will end. But in the process, it’s not just Viraj and his wife who get to introspect on their relationship, parenting and destiny. Jayaram’s understated character gently reinforces the beauty of love and responsible parenting for the older generation as well. 

Mrunal, who is gorgeously turned out by design, comes into her own in the final act. After Sita Ramam , this film gives her a more complex character and she steps up, giving it her best shot. For Priyadarshi , the friend-colleague part is like a walk in the park. He blends in with ease and in many places, where he rolls his eyes at the turn of events or nudges things in a certain direction, he is us, the rational audience wondering where all of this is headed. Child actor Kiara Khanna holds the drama together with her innocence and vulnerability. 

A few minor details make the narrative more authentic. The story that begins in Mumbai, travels back in time to Coonoor and then to Goa, reflects the multilingual, multicultural people of these regions with a smattering of English, Hindi and Tamil.

I wish an episode in the final stretch didn’t rely on convenient coincidences. One can argue that elite Mumbaikars keep jetsetting to Goa and it isn’t a surprise to find well-qualified professionals among them. Shouryuv drops hints when he introduces certain supporting characters and their profession. Yet, it came across as filmi. Nevertheless, the narrative has its heart in the right place and hopes that we embrace it despite its leaps of faith.

Hi Nanna is a heartwarming story of a father, daughter and the mother fighting her demons and believing in love. Such stories don’t go out of fashion, and Shouryuv’s drama is a breather amid larger-than-life action entertainers.

సుర‌భి నాట‌క రంగ నేప‌థ్యానికి ఓ ల‌వ్‌స్టోరీని జోడించి ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు అర్జున్ సాయి ఉత్స‌వం క‌థ‌ను రాసుకున్నాడు. నాట‌కాల‌కు స‌రైన ఆద‌ర‌ణ ఆదాయం లేక‌పోయినా ఇప్ప‌టికీ ఈ క‌ళ‌నే న‌మ్ముకొని కొంద‌రు ఎలా బ‌తుకుతున్నారు? వారి క‌ష్టాలు ఎలా ఉన్నాయ‌న్న‌ది హార్ట్ ట‌చింగ్‌గా సినిమాలో చూపించాడు డైరెక్ట‌ర్‌. ఓ వైపు నాట‌కాలు..మ‌రోవైపు ప్రేమ‌క‌థ‌ను స‌మాంత‌రంగా చూపిస్తూ క‌థ‌ను ముందుకు న‌డిపించాడు.

ఓ ప్రేమ పెళ్లి జ‌రిపించే క్ర‌మంలో హీరోహీరోయిన్ల మ‌ధ్య ప‌రిచ‌యం ఏర్ప‌డ‌టం, వారి ప్రేమ‌క‌థ‌, ఆ జంట మ‌ధ్య మ‌న‌స్ప‌ర్థ‌ల‌ను ప్ర‌థ‌మార్థంలో చూపించాడు. రంగ‌స్థ‌ల క‌ళాకారుల తెర వెనుక జీవితాల్ని ఎమోష‌న‌ల్‌గా ఆవిష్క‌రించారు. పెద్ద‌లు త‌మ ఇద్ద‌రికి పెళ్లి జ‌రిపించాల‌ని అనుకున్న విష‌యం తెలియ‌క ఇంట్లో నుంచి పారిపోయి క‌లిసే జ‌ర్నీ చేయ‌డం, వారి మ‌ధ్య అల‌క‌లు, అపార్థాల‌తో చుట్టూ సెకండాఫ్‌ను సెన్సిబుల్‌గా సాగుతుంది. నాట‌కాల‌కు పూర్వ వైభ‌వం తీసుకొచ్చేందుకు నాయ‌కానాయిక‌ల చేసే ప్ర‌య‌త్నాల‌ను ద్వితీయార్థంలో స్క్రీన్‌పై ప్ర‌జెంట్ చేశారు.

ల‌వ్ స్టోరీ రొటీన్‌...

ఉత్స‌వం సినిమాలోని మెయిన్ ల‌వ్ స్టోరీ రొటీన్‌గా రాసుకున్నాడు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. నాట‌కాల తాలూకు ఎపిసోడ్స్ క‌థ‌తో సంబంధం లేకుండా స్క్రీన్‌పై వ‌స్తుంటాయి. క‌ళాకారుల క‌ష్టాల‌ను పైపైనే ట‌చ్ చేసిన‌ట్లుగానే అనిపిస్తుంది. నాట‌క రంగాన్ని బ‌తికించ‌డం కోసం నాయ‌కానాయిక‌లు చేసే ప్ర‌య‌త్నాలు లాజిక్‌ల‌కు దూరంగా సాగుతాయి.

‘Bound in Heaven’ Review: Ni Ni and Zhou You Make the Most of a Doomed Romance in Exuberant Drama

Passion for one another gives a couple in desperate straits a reason to live in Huo Xin’s boisterous debut feature, which played the Toronto Film Festival.

Theirs is a love without name in “ Bound in Heaven ,” when the connection between Xia You ( Ni Ni ) and Xu Zitai ( Zhou You ) is so primal that neither bother to introduce themselves to one another until after spending a night together. Details like these can seem besides the point in Huo Xin ’s torrid adaptation of Li Xiuwen’s novel of the same name. Passion trumps all else, both in front and behind the camera, in an auspicious directorial debut from the veteran screenwriter, who sees a doomed romance as an opportunity for a spirited drama when its central duo lives each day like their last.

The imagery is as intense as the relationship. Scenes where Xu and Xiu speak to one another in quiet conspiratorial whispers are as lively as the ones in which they want to tear each other’s clothes off. The sex proves less vulnerable than Xiu’s meeting Xu’s family in rural China, a visit that isn’t warmly received by his parents.

Leading with emotion, “Bound in Heaven” leaves its characters largely undefined by anything other than their class, as Xiu is caught between suitors that are rich and poor. But Ni and Zhou bring nuance to the parts and make for a captivating couple. Envisioning a romance with the verve of an action film, Huo, a frequent collaborator of Zhang Yang (“Shower”) and Stephen Chow (“Kung Fu Hustle”), pulls together different worlds beyond where its protagonists come from. While the results can be occasionally messy, more often than not the pairing brings out the best parts in one another.
