500 Words Long Essay on Facebook

Facebook is a social media platform that has revolutionized the way people connect and interact with each other. With over 2.85 billion monthly active users, it has become the most popular social networking site in the world. In this essay, I will discuss the various aspects of Facebook, including its impact on communication, privacy concerns, addiction, and social activism.

Firstly, Facebook has greatly improved communication by providing a platform for people to connect and share information instantly. Through features such as posting status updates, sharing photos and videos, and sending private messages, users can easily stay in touch with friends and family, regardless of their physical location. Facebook has made it possible to reconnect with long-lost friends and foster new relationships, all within the virtual realm.

However, along with the benefits of communication, Facebook also brings about privacy concerns. The vast amount of personal information shared willingly by users makes them vulnerable to security threats and identity theft. Moreover, the constant tracking and data collection carried out by Facebook raises concerns about the misuse and exploitation of personal data. It is crucial for users to be cautious about the information they share and be aware of the privacy settings provided by Facebook to protect their personal data.

Another aspect of Facebook that has gained attention is addiction. The addictive nature of social media platforms, including Facebook, has been widely researched and debated. The constant need for likes, comments, and validation fuels a cycle of gratification that can lead to excessive use and detachment from the offline world. The constant scrolling and engagement with virtual content can result in reduced productivity, anxiety, and social isolation. It is essential for users to maintain a healthy balance between their online and offline lives to prevent addiction and its negative consequences.

Lastly, Facebook has become a powerful tool for social activism and raising awareness on various issues. The ease of sharing information and organizing events has enabled activists to reach larger audiences and mobilize support for their causes. From political campaigns to fundraising for charitable organizations, Facebook has provided a platform for individuals to engage in meaningful dialogue and create social change.

In conclusion, Facebook has revolutionized communication and connected people like never before. However, it is important to navigate its usage responsibly and consider the privacy concerns and addiction risks. With its immense reach, Facebook can also be leveraged for social activism and bringing about positive change. As we continue to navigate the digital world, it is crucial to be mindful of the impact that platforms like Facebook have on our lives and society as a whole.

Introduction

Pestel analysis, tows analysis, conclusions.

Facebook Corporation was established by the current chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. In its inception days, the Facebook Corporation membership was limited to Harvard students though it was later expanded to other institutions in the city of Boston (Veer, 2011, p.271). The company operates as a social networking site connecting users with friends who work, live and study around them.

People use Facebook to keep up with others, upload photos, share videos and links as well as understand the situation about people they meet. Of all social networking sites Facebook has the widest regional coverage with over 700 million active users (Facebook Inc, 2011, p.36).

Since the establishment of Facebook Inc, the company has been facing legal proceeding in regard to the use of the social networking idea. The company has been accused of interfering with the privacy of the users.

This resulted in declining traffic in key markets until the company introduced powerful controls for sharing personal information. Although they claim to reinforce the law on users, case of hacking confidential information still affect the company’s business (Facebook, 2009, pp.1-11).

Another political factor could be the copyright policies. Considering the scattered nature of Facebook users, most of them are not aware of these policies and end up violating them. The social network site is also affected by bans in certain countries. For instance, the company had been banned operating in China since 2009 (Facebook, 2011, p.36).

Children welfare associations affect the company as a result of exposing detrimental materials to children. Indeed, the office of the New York Attorney General stepped up warnings against the company saying that Facebook might face a consumer fraud indict for misrepresenting how the site is safe for children.

The growing of Asian and Latin America economies is an economic factor that has the highest leverage on the business. In fact, the company fiscal 2011 plan is to expand to the Asian countries such as China.

The company plans to launch in China and abide by the laws of the corporation by partnering with the Chinese search engine Baidu. These growing economies increase the income of the people and are able to access computers more. The rising literacy level especially in the developing nations is a factor influencing the business.

The number of people who can use computers effectively is growing dramatically. For example, statistics indicate that 60% of the Indians are computer literate and 90% of them have daily access to the computer. This is the very reason why India has the highest number of people socializing through Facebook and other social sites. The other economic factor is employment which is associated with internet accessibility.

People working tend to have ample access to computers and are able to socialize more through the social sites. Facebook is ranked at the top when considering the preference of the working community to social networking sites.

Like other internet sites, age demographic is the major influencing factor of Facebook business (Taylor et al., 2003, p.237). Youths tend to be the major users of the site when connecting with their peers.

The minors are increasingly using Facebook to socialize posing risks to the business. In reality, the company has not devised effective measure to filter underage uses out of the site. Religion is also a factor that is affecting the company’s business especially in the Arab countries.

Facebook has been unable to penetrate many of the Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan due to religion restrictions. In addition to these, gender and marital status could leverage the networking business.

Males have been the dominant users of the social networking sites though females have picked the same pace. Unmarried individuals tend to use Facebook more than married individuals perhaps due to time limitations or benefits sort.

Technological factors affecting Facebook business include mobile growth. Nearly 35% of the total Facebookers access the social site from a mobile device. This trend has even moved the mobile market for products like Apple’s iPad and iPhone.

New software technologies have enabled the company to add new features on their site which are attracting more consumers (Kwon, 2010, p.257). In terms of these features, the chat option is the biggest attraction to the site followed by the sharing option.

Advancement in space technology is also expanding the market for the business. Many remote areas have accessibility to information technology through the use of space equipment. Furthermore, connectivity speed has improved very much and people can socialize fast and effectively.

Some new technologies such as third-party medial plug-ins have expanded the use of Facebook credits thus enhancing e-commerce. Besides, technology allows for business transactions to be conducted through Facebook site and therefore attract a new segment of consumers. Undeniably, technological advancement is the key enabler of Facebook business.

SWOT Matrix

TOWS Alternative Matrix

Weaknesses and threats (WT)

A company with great weaknesses has to route to a survival strategy (Stokes & Wilson, 2010, p.225). Facebook should consider the option of joint operation with Baidu and other search engines in difficult markets. Another alternative would be to withdraw from the challenging markets altogether.

But, the challenges of the company must not have to route to a survival strategy due to the company’s strengths. Consequently, better strategy would be to attempt to develop weaknesses into strengths.

Weaknesses and opportunities (WO)

The rising internet usage has resulted in using more the social network sites. Yet Facebook essentially follows a one-model policy which presents a problem if other designs of site features become obsolete. The company has to introduce new features to reach a wider spectrum of users. This will allow using the same site for a range of needs ranging from business to dating.

Strengths and threats (ST)

One of the biggest threats to Facebook is the customer privacy issues. There has been continued criticism that the company does not offer the standard confidentiality demanded in a social networking environment.

The company should reduce such issues using the many applications available that can ensure maximum confidentiality. Another strategy for avoiding competitive pressure is to differentiate the site through easy user interface.

Strengths and opportunities (SO)

Generally, Facebook can build on their strengths by taking the advantage of the opportunities. The company’s strength in global coverage and popularity becomes evident. This strength can enable the company to develop a consumer relationship that attracts regulatory restricted environments.

Eventually, the strength will enable the company to open operation in China and Arab countries. Thus Facebook can benefit from considerable concessions offered by the governments to attract the company.

Facebook Company is certainly operating in a tricky environment due to the changing nature of communication and networking environment. The environment is tricky because there in increasing preference for social networks yet the technology responsible cannot meet the intrinsic demand of the consumers. Policies regulating social medial works have requirements beyond the ability of technology.

This attracts other groups of interests while regulations in some countries cannot be fully satisfied. However, the growing economy and advancement in technology promise a brighter future for the company.

If Facebook can exploit the opportunity of rising usage of the internet through its global coverage, there is a chance of attracting policy makers in other countries and maybe adjust regulations. There is a chance to develop the weaknesses into new strengths once the company is better positioned in the market.

Since the market of social media environment is quite demanding, Facebook must focus on its core resources and competencies. In this case, integration of features and ease of use are distinctive resources that can enable effective differentiation in the competition.

When combined with the threshold resource of regional coverage, the competencies can leverage the brand name in the face of consumers as well as policy makers. It is therefore recommended that the company should:

  • Use the status updates to provide targeted adverts
  • Focus on monetization to improve valuations
  • Provide local advertising based on customer location
  • Enable controlled application
  • Improve in storage and archival
  • Engage in mergers with search engines
  • Solve the problem of privacy

Social associations and the necessity of communication are the two human conditions that are universal. It is a widespread assumption that communication technologies assist in increasing and strengthening social ties (Keller). There are a number of opportunities that are provided by the Internet for social networking. Facebook is one of those opportunities. It is not an untold secret that Facebook has turned out as the most popular online tool. It has made writing letters and phone conversations a practice of the past. According to Pew Research Center, Facebook is used by more than 2/3 of adults who use the Internet. The pervasiveness of Facebook as a social media platform has made it one of the simplest tools to communicate with family and friends (Morse). There is no doubt that Facebook is a great means of communication that allows people to remain connected with their loved ones, no matter where in the world they are. There are a lot of people who consider Facebook to affect the natural communication. They assert that people spend most of their time on this website and use it to be in contact with their family, friends, and acquaintances. According to them, this consistent practice has entirely changed communication ways as compared to the past. They also consider Facebook as a means of affecting real relationships. They think so because people show more attentiveness and concerned for the virtual relationships instead of spending time with family members and other people in the real world. They also argue that the easiness of Facebook’s use to stay in touch with thousands of people has also dissuaded many people to interact through traditional means. In particular, it has affected the communication skills of teenagers who are needed to have face-to-face interactions for learning social norms. Therefore, the opponents of Facebook communication believe that it does not let young children develop social skills ("Effects of Facebook on Communication - Its Impact and Study"). I believe that the social relationships we have today are not undermined by technology as assumed. Facebook is a great communicating platform due to which personal relationships have augmented. It has increased online communication without replacing telephone and face-to-face conversations. Facebook has added to the mentioned offline forms of communication by “increasing the overall volume of contact” (Masket). Facebook users are able to stay in contact with people they already know. It means face-to-face relationships are enhanced and strengthened when people are able to communicate through this most renowned social media website. Both online and offline relationships and conversations are complemented by each other. Facebook is a medium that makes this interaction possible and stronger. In addition, the News Feed option in Facebook is a way to facilitate its users to remain aware of their contacts. Not only this, the size of Facebook has also been successful in encouraging communication as it facilitates new friendships. This website has increased the probability of communicating with people who share similar interests. Thus, people using Facebook do not have to go outside in order to be in contact with people. They can do so wherever they happen to be. In addition, it is also believed by many that Facebook has greatly impacted the socialization patterns as its users are more concerned for uploading their pictures and videos, updating minute-to-minute statuses, and commenting on posts and walls. This simply reflects the fact that they consider online socialization more important than gatherings in real life. According to their point of view, the excessiveness of Facebook use has killed communication in real-life. This is because people now prefer to meet on Facebook rather than meeting in person. In short, many people consider Facebook as a real life replacement as it impacts real relationships and strengthens online ones ("How Facebook is Killing Real Relationships?"). However, I do not agree with the above arguments presented by the opponents of Facebook and other social networking sites. I strongly believe that Facebook is serving as an important tool for enriching social lives. Furthermore, communicating through Facebook has also fulfilled peoples’ need for socialization, intimacy, social support, and independence. Profile construction, video and picture sharing, talking through instant messaging provided by Facebook have made it easier for people to continuously create, recreate and hone their individuality. It is worth-mentioning that a majority of Facebook users are teenagers. As they prepare themselves to enter the social world as adults, Facebook provides them an online social environment which allows them to interact with other people from the comfort of their homes (Koltow). As far as my beliefs are concerned, I think that Facebook has benefitted us in several ways. It is one of those social networks that have made people better individuals and societal participants. Communication through Facebook has helped in the organization of political activities and has also encouraged democracy. This is because people have started to voice their opinions and beliefs through Facebook that impacts other peoples’ mindsets. Social networking and communication via Facebook has allowed people to explore their unique identity. Moreover, it has also assisted in the development and provision of social cognitive skills. For instance, conversing with different people and getting to know their ideas polishes one’s skill to talk with perspective ("Are Social Networking Sites Good for Our Society?”). Similarly, the use of Facebook has reduced loneliness and has also improved wellbeing. It is especially helpful for people who are not good in socializing conventionally (Marshall). It is particularly helping those people who are separated or far away from their friends and family members. Facebook has brought people together regardless of the fact that they are physically separated. The best example in this regard is that of people who are employed in the armed forces. They use Facebook consistently to be in touch with their loved ones as this social networking site makes it easier for them to see and converse with their near and dear ones. I do not completely disagree with the idea that Facebook has several drawbacks. However, its positives and benefits have outweighed them. Facebook has let people to connect with each other (Lecky-Thompson). There are a lot of success stories including marriages, partnerships, business contracts, and other cheering endorsements that make Facebook a valid platform for communication and social interaction. In short, there is no potential harm in using Facebook as a means of communication. It needs to be understoos that this website is not harmful or damaging itself. How to Write Top-Graded Essays in English

How to Write Top-Graded Essays in English

  • 5-minute read
  • 7th December 2022

Writing English papers and essays can be challenging at first, but with the right tools, knowledge, and resources, you can improve your writing skills. In this article, you’ll get some tips and tricks on how to write a top-graded essay in English.

Have you heard the saying “practice makes perfect”? Well, it’s wrong. Practice does make improvement, though. Whether you’re taking an English composition class, studying for the IELTS or TOEFL , or preparing to study abroad, you can always find new ways to practice writing in English.

If you practice on a daily basis, you’ll be exercising the skills you know while challenging yourself to learn even more. There are many ways you can practice writing in English daily:

  • Keep a daily journal.
  • Write practice essays.
  • Do creative writing exercises .

Read in English

The best way to improve your writing is to read English books, news articles, essays, and other media. By reading the writing of other authors (whether they’re native or non-native speakers), you’re exposing yourself to different writing styles and learning new vocabulary. Be sure to take notes when you’re reading so you can write down things you don’t know (e.g., new words or phrases) or sentences or phrases you like.

For example, maybe you need to write a paper related to climate change. By reading news articles or research papers on this topic, you can learn relevant vocabulary and knowledge you can use in your essay.

FluentU has a great article with a list of 20 classic books you can read in English for free.

Immerse Yourself in English

If you don’t live in an English-speaking country, you may be thinking, “How can I immerse myself in English?” There are many ways to overcome this challenge. The following strategies are especially useful if you plan to study or travel abroad:

  • Follow YouTube channels that focus on learning English or that have English speakers.
  • Use social media to follow English-speaking accounts you are interested in.
  • Watch movies and TV shows in English or use English subtitles when watching your favorite shows.
  • Participate in your English club or salon at school to get more practice.
  • Become an English tutor at a local school (teaching others is the best way to learn).

By constantly exposing yourself to English, you will improve your writing and speaking skills.

Visit Your Writing Center

If you’re enrolled at a university, you most likely have a free writing center you can use if you need help with your assignments. If you don’t have a writing center, ask your teacher for help and for information on local resources.

Use Your Feedback

After you submit an English writing assignment, you should receive feedback from your teacher on how you did. Use this feedback to your advantage. If you haven’t been getting feedback on your writing, ask your teacher to explain what issues they are seeing in your writing and what you could do to improve.

Be Aware of Your Common Writing Mistakes

If you review your feedback on writing assignments, you might notice some recurring mistakes you are making. Make a list of common mistakes you tend to make when writing, and use it when doing future assignments. Some common mistakes include the following:

  • Grammar errors (e.g., not using articles).
  • Incorrect vocabulary (e.g., confusing however and therefore ).
  • Spelling mistakes (e.g., writing form when you mean from ).
  • Missing essay components (e.g., not using a thesis statement in your introduction).
  • Not using examples in your body paragraphs.
  • Not writing an effective conclusion .

This is just a general list of writing mistakes, some of which you may make. But be sure to go through your writing feedback or talk with your teacher to make a list of your most common mistakes.

Use a Prewriting Strategy

So many students sit down to write an essay without a plan. They just start writing whatever comes to their mind. However, to write a top-graded essay in English, you must plan and brainstorm before you begin to write. Here are some strategies you can use during the prewriting stage:

  • Freewriting
  • Concept Mapping

For more detailed information on each of these processes, read “5 Useful Prewriting Strategies.”

Follow the Writing Process

All writers should follow a writing process. However, the writing process can vary depending on what you’re writing. For example, the process for a Ph.D. thesis is going to look different to that of a news article. Regardless, there are some basic steps that all writers should follow:

  • Understanding the assignment, essay question, or writing topic.
  • Planning, outlining, and prewriting.
  • Writing a thesis statement.
  • Writing your essay.
  • Revising and editing.

Writing essays, theses, news articles, or papers in English can be challenging. They take a lot of work, practice, and persistence. However, with these tips, you will be on your way to writing top-graded English essays.

Why You Won’t Find Me Wearing “Wifey” Merch After My Wedding

By Hannah Coates

Image may contain Guy Ritchie Blazer Clothing Coat Jacket Formal Wear Suit Fashion Accessories Bag and Handbag

Nothing is certain in life, besides death, taxes, and the fact you will never find me wearing “wifey” merch before or after my forthcoming wedding. As a soon-to-be-bride, the thought of wearing any kind of relationship-inspired attire brings me out in hives. While other recently-engaged women seem to throw themselves headfirst into their newfound bride-to-be identity, something about the whole thing has left me feeling nauseous.

So, you can imagine my reaction when I saw newlywed Millie Bobby Brown’s honeymoon photos on Instagram . Having recently tied the knot with Jake Bongiovi (son of Jon Bon Jovi) at the tender age of 20, Brown showcased some new “wifey”-emblazoned denim shorts and a white cap (worn backwards), with the heave-inducing slogan “WIFE OF THE PARTY” across the front.

Now, I’m not here to shatter anyone’s newlywed bliss—and the fact that these two wealthy young celebs appear to be spending their honeymoon at Universal Studios is another article entirely—but, why ? Why is being married an identity that a woman (not least one who is an accomplished actress) needs to shout about? I don’t see her groom wearing a “hubby” tee, and likewise I don’t see brands churning out novelty bags, shoes, or swimwear to men making the trip down the aisle.

Of course, it’s only women (although many now choose not to) who change their name after getting married, a tradition that dates back to the 15th century—back when a woman was considered her new husband’s legal property. Which says it all, really. The simple fact is that women are still being sold this trad wife-adjacent dream: secure the man, get the ring, buy the big white dress and everything will be perfect. Your kitchen will be clean and you will smile all the time!

The matching “bride tribe” pajamas (silky, white and with marabou feather trim, you know the ones), and that miserable Etsy font are all over Instagram—we see the bridal trappings on those we follow and then seek to emulate it all, perhaps viewing it as some form of self-improvement. It works well for the wedding industry, which sells us—at extortionate prices—everything we “need” for the Perfect Big Day.

And for the most part, us humans tend to follow the herd. If you’ve found yourself attending plastic penis-heavy hen dos that you absolutely never wanted to be a part of, then it’s because you feel like you’re supposed to, right?

Despite having been resolute about not doing the whole “bride thing,” I confess to finding myself getting swept away in a sea of £65 dress appointments, floral arrangements, and veils. Perhaps it’s because my algorithm is firing on all cylinders and delivering me the bridal content I never asked for—or maybe it’s just the societal pressure I’ve absorbed by osmosis, but in some ways I’ve found it hard not to become the bride the world wants me to be. And after the Bride, comes the Wifey. Luckily (shudder) I’ve since snapped out of it.

It’s an unpopular opinion—and perhaps I shouldn’t admit it—but I still think many people regard getting married as the ultimate marker of success for a woman. But what about the amazing careers we now have? Or the vote we won? Or the myriad other things that make us women, and people, in the world? While finding love—and getting married—is a wonderful thing, should it really define us?

Now, I don’t blame a 20-year-old for celebrating her newfound relationship status—and rightly having fun with it—but what I do hope is that her millions of young female followers choose to forge their own paths, and place importance on things besides their relationship status. After all, you are much more than the person you marry (if you choose to marry one), and you should treat yourself as such.

As for me, if you do find me sporting a “bride” or “wife” logo anywhere about my person, know that I’ve either been forced into it, or I’m channeling Madonna and Guy Richie from the Noughties. Wifey for lifey? Not on my watch.

I was a law clerk for Justice Alito. He must recuse himself from hearing cases involving Donald Trump.

Flying the U.S. flag upside down, once a signal of distress, has become a symbol of those who reject the results of the 2020 presidential election. When Alito did so, it was indeed a distress call.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. has refused to recuse himself from cases concerning Donald Trump despite a New York Times report that flags used as symbols of support for the 45th president were flown outside two of Alito's homes.

As a former law clerk to Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., I often admired him as a person for his integrity and honesty. As a progressive liberal, however, I vehemently disagreed with the approach he takes to reading the Constitution, the narrow interpretation he adopts, and his reverence for the framers’ restrictive intent.

Over the years, I became increasingly distressed with the results of his decisions. And then came Dobbs .

By striking down the rights of women to choose whether to terminate a pregnancy, the decision last year in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization , which he wrote , eviscerated women’s fundamental right to self-determination. Dobbs is not just about abortion; it is about setting the clock back and undermining the core protections enshrined within the Constitution of liberty, equality, and access to justice.

And then came the flag.

Flying the American flag upside down, formerly a signal of distress, is now understood to unequivocally telegraph support for those who have co-opted and corrupted its original intent . It has become the symbol of those who attacked the U.S. Capitol in a violent insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, who challenged — and continue to deny — the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election. It is the emblem for the “Stop the Steal” Trump factions , the symbol now held hostage by those who attacked our democracy at its very core.

The New York Times reported earlier this month that Justice Alito flew an upside-down flag at his home in Fairfax, Va. , and another controversial flag at his beach house on Long Beach Island — acts that are widely accepted as an abhorrent affront to anyone who respects our constitutional democracy. So, when that flag is flown upside down by a member of the nation’s highest court, it is indeed a distress call.

The U.S. Supreme Court is currently deciding whether a president’s actions while in office are absolutely immune from criminal prosecution , irrespective of whether they concern the legitimate business of the office. Donald Trump has been indicted in state and federal courts in Washington, D.C., Florida, Georgia, and New York, alleging fraud as well as crimes in connection with the Jan. 6 insurrection, the mishandling of classified documents , election interference , and more.

If the Supreme Court decides that he has blanket immunity — a decision expected any day now — these criminal charges, and any others, disappear. This means a president could commit serious crimes while in office, having nothing to do with the legitimate function of government, without facing any consequences. A president could theoretically hire an assassin to kill a competitor with impunity.

Justice Alito must recuse himself from having any role in the decision of these cases.

Federal law requires a justice, judge, or magistrate to disqualify themself in proceedings in which their “ impartiality may reasonably be questioned .” Judges routinely recuse themselves from cases where the mere hinted appearance of impropriety is enough to warrant stepping away from a case.

Flying the flag, upside down, at your home is more than a hint of political impropriety — it irrefutably calls into question impartiality and bias toward the former president. It is a tangible demonstration of support for those who continue to assert that the election was stolen from him. It is the chosen insignia of those who tried to hijack the election by attacking the Capitol on Jan. 6 and gut the very constitutional democracy that established the Supreme Court.

The flag flying over Justice Alito’s home casts a shadow over his ability to be impartial.

This is not the first time the “Stop the Steal” specter has arisen at the court. Revelations and allegations about Justice Clarence Thomas’ wife’s communications with White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows , allegedly supporting the disruption of the results of the November 2020 election, raised the appearance of political impropriety. So, too, does the flag flying over Justice Alito’s home cast a shadow over his ability to be impartial.

It is precisely to guarantee independence from political pressure that Supreme Court justices (and all federal judges) serve for life. They do not need to run for reelection, nor curry favor with politicians to ensure their reappointment. But this same guarantee of political independence engenders a lack of meaningful oversight, creating an opportunity to make decisions based on personal, political persuasions.

Moreover, with a majority of Supreme Court justices largely understood to have a conservative agenda, much of which aligns with a Republican platform, the fear that civil rights are in jeopardy is tangible. Now more than ever, there is no place for politics on the court.

Justice Alito may or may not be biased in favor of the former president, but the flag flying upside down at his home in the past unequivocally telegraphs reasonable questions about his impartiality in cases involving Trump. These questions, separate and apart from the crisis in confidence that such conduct may raise for the court, mandate Justice Alito’s recusal from these cases.

The gravity of the implications of Justice Alito’s refusal to recuse himself from these decisions cannot be understated. At stake is not only the independence of the court itself, but also its credibility, and its role as a protector of our constitutional democracy.

Susan Sullivan is a professor in the political science department at Temple University and served as a law clerk to Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.

Experts say Netflix's Baby Reindeer may cause this major change in the English language

Experts say Netflix's Baby Reindeer may cause this major change in the English language

The impacts of netflix's baby reindeer are already evident in posts online.

Emily Brown

Emily Brown

Language experts have explained how Netflix's hit show Baby Reindeer could change the way we speak - and it wouldn't be the first time.

It's been almost two months since the shocking story of Donny and Martha arrived on Netflix in April, captivating viewers as we watched their relationship grow and twist into something very sinister.

The series has only recently made its way out of Netflix's Top 10 list, but Tony Thorne, a language consultant at King’s College London, has suggested the impacts of the series could last long into the future.

Speaking to The Sun, Thorne explained that the show could spark the use of a new term in our language.

He said: "It’s not surprising if people take a current reference from news, pop culture or entertainment to use as slang."

Thorne used the term 'gaslighting' as one example of pop culture moments impacting our speech.

The term is now widely understood to refer to a form of psychological abuse which causes a person to question their sanity, memories, or perception of reality.

Baby Reindeer stars Richard Gadd as a fictionalised version of himself (Netflix)

Most of us are probably familiar with the term, but Thorne pointed out that it stems from the title of a 1944 thriller movie titled Gaslight .

When it comes to Baby Reindeer , then, Thorne explained: “So it’s not a complete surprise if some people are announcing that they’ve been ‘baby reindeered’ if they feel - or more probably pretend - that they are being stalked.

"In fact I had already recorded ‘doing a Martha’ to describe an obsessive stalker’s activities several days ago."

Elizabeth Dunne, an English language and linguistics expert, agreed with Thorne as she explained how using terms derived from pop culture can be a shortcut to explaining complex ideas.

She said: "We use language to bond over shared concepts and understanding, and films and TV shows have been a huge global cultural phenomenon for the past 100 years or so, and consequently aspects of them have entered common parlance."

“We could easily see the same happen with ‘baby reindeered’.”

People are already using the term 'baby reindeered'. (X)

Examples of people using the term 'baby reindeered' are already popping up online, with one X user writing: "Yall ever been baby reindeered?"

Another shared their own story of accidental 'baby reindeering', writing: "I was waiting for someone outside The Merrion and randomly saw Dev Patel. We made eye contact and I thought we were having a ~moment~. Then he continued to keep a watchful eye and it became clear that he thought he was being Baby Reindeered."

However, while the show is already showing its impacts off screen, Thorne said it would be difficult to predict which pop culture phrases would remain in use into the future.

“These phrases may catch on and stay in the language, but many are soon forgotten and people coming across them in the future will be baffled by them: even expert linguists can’t be sure which will stick and which will disappear," he explained.
