The sports industry is full of inspirational and determined people. My favourite cricketer is Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has also earned names like Mahi, Captain Cool, and MSD. Dhoni is an international Indian cricketer who plays as a middle-order batsman and a wicket-keeper.
He is also known to be a finisher in many matches. He is the only cricketer under whose captainship India has won a trophy in every ICC format. In 2011, Dhoni was also featured in the TIME’s List of 100 Most Influential People in The World.
Dhoni was born in Ranchi, Jharkhand. In school, he used to play football. He played football at the district level and club level as a goalkeeper. His football coach asked him to try playing cricket.
Dhoni impressed everyone with his wicket-keeping skills and started focusing entirely on this game after the 10th standard. His favourite player at that time was Sachin Tendulkar , who he called his Hero.
In the early years of his career, Dhoni played school cricket and club cricket. He then played in the Ranji Trophy wherein he scored a half-century in his debut match.
From the years 2001 to 2003, Dhoni worked in the railways as a travelling ticket examiner. His colleagues remembered him to be honest and straight forward. After two years of working in the railways, Dhoni made his way back into cricket .
The Dhoni Era
Dhoni was picked up in the One Day International (ODI) India squad against Bangladesh. Dhoni was unable to make an impact in his first match as he got run out for a duck. But from the very next game, Dhoni started showing what he was really capable of doing. He scored an unbeaten 183 runs against Sri Lanka when Sachin Tendulkar gave away his wicket early in the game.
Dhoni helped India win matches under challenging situations. Whenever Dhoni came to bat, he accelerated the run rate and led India to victory. He was also holding the number one spot in ICC ODI Rankings in the year 2006.
Dhoni is an aggressive ball hitter and one of the fastest runners between the wickets. He is always praised by cricketers worldwide for his light speed stumping. He holds the record for the highest number of stumping by any wicket-keeper.
The starting of the 2007 Cricket World Cup was a bit rough for our beloved Dhoni. In two matches, he got out for zero. This agitated and angered some Indian political activists so much that they vandalised and damaged his house in Ranchi.
But Dhoni was not one to give up. He played some fantastic and record-breaking knocks after this episode. He regained his top spot in the ICC rankings, and his batting average per match reached a good 70 runs. Because of this spectacular display of performance, Dhoni was made the captain of the Indian cricket team in the year 2007.
Dhoni’s Captaincy
Dhoni is regarded as the most successful Indian captain, even by Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. It was under his captaincy that the Indian cricket team rose to the top spot in the ICC Rankings.
Under him, India won the 2011 Cricket World Cup. In the final against Sri Lanka, India had already lost three of its best batsmen. Dhoni promoted himself in the order and went out to bat before the in-form Yuvraj Singh.
He built a great partnership with Gautam Gambhir and ended the match for India with a six. He scored an unbeatable 91 runs and was also named the Man of the Match. The bat that he used in the match was auctioned and sold for Rs. 72 lakhs. All of this money went to his wife’s foundation that helps take care of and support orphaned children.
Dhoni has also captained the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was contracted by CSK for a hefty 1.5 million dollars in the year 2010, thus making him the most expensive player to be auctioned in IPL for the first season. My Favourite Sportsperson (M.S. Dhoni) – Short Essay
My favourite sportsperson, M.S. Dhoni is a treat to watch, just because his way to tackle any situation is beyond anyone’s limitation, whether it is on the field or when people go crazy on him. My favourite sportsperson is Dhoni because calmness excites me a lot. He is known as the best finisher out on the field as he knows to control his jittery nerves and take the right decision.
He’s never out of his mind even at the times of celebration and exults. His play is all natural. He is a lightning bolt in the terms of wicket-keeping and swaying his bat to hit it hard.
His career was not like ‘come and get served’, he did a lot to hold his head high above the sky on the field, he took ample of risks and faced the world on his own. His stumping is pretty much awesome with a fastest one of 0.08 secs. He was first carved on the minds of people when he was the one who made the Indian team win the finals of world cup 2011 by defeating Sri Lanka at the Wankhede stadium and then was the time when his name rolled on the streets of India.
He was the captain of the Indian cricket team and was known as the captain cool. He encouraged the youth of cricket. He was never found disappointed on the field, he maintained a positive approach, although they were the losing team.
