1.  Some people think that it is important to have a single language as an international official language. Others think that it will make it difficult to identify countries and cause a loss of culture. What are your opinions on this?  

Sample Answer

With the advent of globalization, a common language to facilitate trade and  communication seems inevitable. Some oppose the development of a single language  on the grounds that it may lead to cultural erosion and a loss of local linguistic  knowledge. Yet, I am of the opinion that it is possible to use an official international  language and still retain one’s own language and culture.

Firstly, many countries already use an official language or languages. For example, in  India there are two official languages: Hindi and English. In a country such as India  where there are innumerable languages spoken, there is a need for official languages to  ensure communication between different sections of the population and the different  states. In China, where different dialects are spoken, Mandarin, the official language,  enables people from different provinces to comprehend each other.

Secondly, in an age of rampant globalization there is no doubt that an international  language is inevitability. How is an African businessman going to conduct business in  China when there are such differences between languages? In this sense, not only is an  international language inevitable, but also a necessity for trade, commerce and  economic expansion in the 21st century.

The critics opposing the adoption of an international official language argue that it would  lead to a loss of cultural identity. However, the use of an international official language  doesn’t mean that local languages will die out. For example, English already functions  as a kind of unofficial international language but this doesn’t mean that people solely  converse in English or they neglect their own language. English is used in specific  contexts (trade, business, etc) and native languages are used for everyday instruction.

In brief, as the world becomes smaller the need for an official international language  seems unavoidable. English has already assumed this role although its status is  unofficial. In my view, the use of either an official or unofficial international language is  necessary to facilitate communication in a time of rapid globalization.

2.  When people move to another country, some of them decide to follow the customs of the new country. Others prefer to keep their own customs. Compare these two choices. Which one do you prefer? Support your answer with specific details.   

People may choose to keep their old traditions from their native country or to accept  new ones. Keeping the old customs will help one to overcome the cultural shock and  the change of the environment. From the other side, accepting the new traditions will  help one to adapt and make new friends with residents. In this essay I will give different  reasons why people decide to follow the customs of the new country or to keep their  own customs.

If one is from the country with strong and old traditions, I think it will be rather difficult for  him to adapt to the new customs and moreover to reject his own. That is why some  people from the same country try to live together and to create their own community  where the old traditions are kept. They can not break the customs that were created by  their ancestors. For example, some nations are restricted in certain kinds of food by  their traditions. So, they do not go to the restaurants unless their traditional food is  served there. Some nations according to their customs have to wear certain types of  cloth because their religion tells them to do so.

From the other side, if one is from the country with traditions similar to ones of the new  country it will be easy for him to adopt and to follow the customs of the new place. He  will not feel much difference. Probably, the most difficult part of his relocation will be to accustom to the new climate.

I think that people of the new country are friendlier when they see that foreigner follows  their customs. I belief that traditions of every country deserve respect, especially, when  one lives there. In summary, I think that every country has its own beauty and if one  wants to find out more about it he will love it.

Man, through the ages, has undergone many changes from the time when he depicted  a herd of mammoths on the walls of the cave to these days when he can chart with  someone on the other side of the globe. Modern technology is rapidly changing the  world’s living standards that results in creating a single world culture. New technologies  including Internet, television, electronic media, means of transportation, etc has a great  impact on creating a similar culture all around the globe. Bellow I will list my reasons to  support my opinion.

First of all, Internet and e-mail have changed the way people communicate to each  other. Internet brought many benefits. It is a new means of communication, a fast  access to information and news. People communicate with each other, share their  ideas, happiness and difficulties. We have a great opportunity to find out more about  countries and their history.

Second of all, the modern means of transportation allows people to move from one  place to another very quickly. A few centuries ago it was impossible to imagine waking  up in one country and falling asleep in another.

Finally, as a result of all mentioned above the boundaries between countries, their  traditions and customs are erased. Many people migrate during their lives. Some of  them are looking for a better place to live, others want to get new experience and  knowledge or just pleasure. So, many families are created between people from  different countries. Traditions fuse and evolve into other ones or just vanish.

To sup up, modern technology has a great impact on the way people live now. It is  creating a new single world culture where traditions and distances are no longer of that  importance.

Can your clothes say something about your culture and character?

Some people say that it is possible to tell a lot about a person’s culture and character from their choice of clothes. Do you agree or disagree? There is a view that clothes selection presumably provide valuable information regards to individual’s personality and cultural belonging. I partially agree with this statement to several opinions, and I will explain why in this essay. On the one hand, it is true that the choice of a dress made by each individual is seldom influenced by their personality or mindset. There are often limits to how much we can discover just by looking at someone’s attire, especially when it comes to their personality. For example, the richest person in the world that is Elon Musk usually wears ordinary clothes according to their wishes and this can't say anything about them. This is because he prefers to wear comfortable ones rather than dress style, and it does not make him lose his prestige because everyone knew that he was rich and smart. On the other hand, I am entirely sure that attires might express the character and culture of people as well. The living environment probably influences the choices of an individual’s body appearance. For instance, urban people presumably has more variety of variations of models and brands, attracting them to have a luxurious lifestyle. In addition, it is also might express the aspect of an individual. Take an example, the motivated and cheerful person commonly apply various colours of attire, but people with serious mental stresses tend to wear dark and untidy garbs. Overall, the selection of models and colours in the dress can be used as a reference in determining the character and culture of a person. This is provided that the clothes can provide comfort when used.

Cultural Similarities

Cultures around the world today are more similar than they used to be. What are the reasons? Do you think it is a positive or negative development? In today’s society, people find that culture in everywhere becomes standardisation. There are several reasons that cause this happen, and there are both advantages and disadvantages in relation to this trend. Media is thought to be the main reason that affects culture. Nowadays, most Asian countries can easily access to western culture through media platforms. For example, people are more likely to enjoy watching Hollywood movies rather than movies produced from their own countries. Additionally, tourism and migration are another factor that can have impacts on people’s beliefs. Those who have studied or traveled around the world could adapt to different lifestyle from other countries. For instance, people become independent in many ways including living alone and not relying on their families, because they have used to the western lifestyle when they went abroad. However, it may cause people’s concern that exposure to western culture from media could hinder the use of language of a country. If audiences are constantly watching foreign movies, especially with the language of English, their native language may be abandoned as they speak and read in English predominately. Nevertheless, I believe that it is a positive trend that people could adapt to the other’s culture. For example, Asian food such as sushi is widely accepted in many western countries, and they are not only love the food but also enjoying using chop sticks. Therefore, food becomes a bridge that is connected between western and eastern, allowing people to have fun by sharing the other’s culture. In conclusion, various reasons can cause culture become more similar, and I believe that the benefit of this development outweigh its drawback. ***** I'd appreciate any feedback for my globalisation essay on culture.

Technology and Loss of Culture

It is predictable that traditional cultures of countries will be lost as technology develops. Technology and tradition are incompatible. Do you agree or disagree? No one would deny that the advancement of technology have immensely changed the way of people’s lives, including traditional customs. Regarding this, some people assume that traditional culture of each country will disappear due to the enormous technology breakthroughs. I totally agree with this idea that tradition is unable to co-exist with technology. To start with, the dramatic development of technology in media may play a critical role in fading away local cultures. It seems easy to find materials illustrating the backgrounds of other countries such as movies and dramas, which in turn, making people expose to other cultures. According to research, this persistent exposure to international media has contributed to a social trend which people become curious about new cultures and in turn welcome it, rather than retaining their local unique culture. Therefore, this may result in the disappearance of cultural diversity as technology advances. Moreover, the improvement of technology enables people to contact with families living apart more frequently than ever, which is one of the cultures of various countries. With the help of technology appliance such as mobiles and web-camera, people these days have more opportunities to keep in touch with other family members without travelling. However, it was not uncommon for people in the past to visit hometown, especially on special occasions. The frequent contacts help people to feel closer regardless of how far they are. To take Korea as example, visiting the hometown, which was given the great importance on the public before technology developed, is not considered as a priority custom any more. Instead, they travel overseas or afford holiday on special occasion, which means people no longer follow the local tradition. To recapitulate, the technological improvements have indeed brought about losing tradition in various ways.  Others prefer to keep their own customs. Compare these two choices.
 Which one do you prefer? Habits are one of the crucial component of cultural formation in particular area of the global. In nowadays world, many people encounter with different customs in the places they migrate for several purposes. Some individuals prefer to become familiar with the country they’ve relocated to, some of them adopt to protect their traditions. My personal view is that individuals should not follow the customs of the new country to preserve their culture and identity. Uniqe customs to the development of a sense of self, which has huge importance for the psychology of people. Accordingly, maintaining these traditions is beneficial to mental health, especially one’s the sense of self. Suggest that you have a conservative attitude on some particular subjects, and your new country has radical or socialist customs. If you enforce yourself not to act like you are, you may experience self-conflict which can be hazardous to your psychological health. Otherwise, this following may come with a societal issue. In the case of all people comply with their new nation’s habits, a vast majority of the culture may encounter with threatening of forgetting. So, the disappearance of nations cause fewer customs, local dishes, and even superstition diversity, all of which aid our understanding of the world. Each person should safeguard their customs in order to keep alive every culture. In brief, cultural emergence has considerable constituent, like customs. When people relocate, they may be faced with the decision of whether or not to follow their traditions. As a result, maintaining one’s own conventions tend to sustain both one’s the sense of self as well as one’s cultural heritage.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Model Essay

Below is an example of a band score 9 IELTS writing task 2 model essay. The task is a direct questions essay which is quite common in IELTS. Read it carefully and pay attention to the structure of the essay, the linkers and the sentence structures.

Essay Question

Art is considered an important part of a society  as well as an expression of its culture. Do you think it is important for children to be taught art? Do you think children should be encouraged to focus on art rather than other subjects?

Model Answer

It is commonly believed that art plays a fundamental role in society as artists are able to express their thoughts and their culture in their work. In my opinion, children should definitely learn art because they can develop creativity and learn to express themselves in their art work but it should not be taught to the detriment of other subjects.

Firstly, art is an essential subject which children, especially young children, should learn in order to help promote their creativity and imagination. Without the development of imagination and creative thinking, children will struggle to grow into dynamic, individual thinkers when they reach adulthood. Furthermore, some children are particularly gifted in their creative abilities and studying art can help them nurture their talents.

Another important advantage for children when practicing art is that it provides a medium through which they can express their emotions and feelings. In other words, young children do not have the linguistic capabilities to put their ideas into language and thus communicate directly. Therefore, by using art, they are able to convey meaning through pictures and symbols. For this reason, many child psychologists often study the art work of children to gain an insight into what they think and feel.

Finally, however, regardless of how useful the study of art is for children, this should not result in more focus being placed on art rather than other subjects. Children need to have a balance of all subjects so as to facilitate a healthy development both mentally and physically. Thus, ensuring that there is a healthy balance of art, sciences, languages and physical education in the school syllabus is essential.

In conclusion, while art certainly helps a child develop creativity as well as express their thoughts, it should be taught equally alongside all other subjects. A school curriculum should offer a balance of subjects.

Art is crucial for a society to thrive and for the expression of its values. It gives chaos of the world order. I believe art should be introduced and taught to children and it should be encouraged to pursue art as a career if a child is passionate enough about it.

Art is very necessary for children. It acts as a vessel for a growing mind to express itself. Many children these days are so absorbed in studies these days that they hardly find time for some leisure activity. Extra co-curricular activities and passion projects are becoming obsolete in this age of competition. Art subjects can act as shelter in this time. Expression and letting out of emotions through music, painting, filmmaking, and photography can be very beneficial for our young. It imparts them emotional stability and gives them a chance to express themselves. These days many children who are differently abled express themselves through abstract art.

Some people consider art an entertaining pursuit only and don’t even want to consider it as a profession and think their children should only study other subjects, but I feel the young generation should be encouraged to make their career in any form of art if they are enthusiastic about it and art should be made available to them as major subject. Gone are the days when only doctors and engineers used to make decent money. These days artists and many professionals of this domain make a hefty amount of money through their services. Many TV channels, media houses, and bands are available to hire people who are equipped with skills. Social media has imparted content creators a very special power to yield in modern times and they don’t need those old-school auditions and red tape to make their content available to the public.

In the bottom line, I’d say young people should be taught art and meanwhile, if any curious mind is really interested in it then it should be available to them as a subject and part of their curriculum. I feel proper awareness and knowledge is the key in this case.

It’s common sense that art is a substantial part of a society as well as an expression of its culture. A good inheritance of traditional cultures and customs is vital to a civilization. Besides these, there are also many practical benefits for the children to learn art.

Primarily, learning art cultivates the kids’ ability of admiring beauties, builds a foundation of what is beautiful and ugly. Secondly, topics about artworks can always be a good method to connect with people and make friends, which will bring the children a kinder social atmosphere in a grown-up society of the future. People with good taste in artworks and creations are highly likely to be welcomed and appreciated. Because it shows you are well-educated, upper-class or at least, a person who has deep thought.

However, I disagree with the idea that children should be encouraged to focus simply on art rather than other subjects. It depends on the characters of the children we are talking about, and 2 important dimensionalities should be considered: the individual willingness and how talented they are.

For the talented children, I think it’s better to spend the majority of their time on the gifts they are good at. Because they have great possibilities to achieve great success, the premise of which is their willingness is the same. Considering children’s willingness is necessary because it will make the whole thing become their own vision rather than the fate forced on them. In any circumstances, we should put the respect of individuals into the first priority, even if they are only children.

For the majority of ordinary people, the best choice might be to regard art as a compulsory lesson as other subjects. Because people without extinct talent need to acquire enough basic knowledge to have the ability to survive in the competing world. The more they learn, the more chances they can find relative strength from all the subjects.

The most important way to express culture is often seen to be art, perceived to be necessary in each and every society made teaching it to little kids a necessity, however, encouraging them to think of it as a career instead of a hobby is unrecommended due to lack of opportunities in such domains.

One clear benefit of teaching art to children is the effect artistical activity have on brain development, increasing mental resilience and as a result, augmenting their capacity to learn new and different skills effectively and efficiently. for instance, drawing shown to foster creativity while playing an instrument is proved by science to improve memory and increase intelligence. In other words, children who study art will have a huge advantage in contrast with their peers when it comes to success in both education and work.

Despite art being of great benefits to people of all ages, encouraging children to direct their attention to art is often unrecommended, owing to the lack of job prospects, making it quite hard to have a stable source of income being an artist. An unfortunate phenomenon, observed in the USA, is the high rates of people changing profession, after graduating from art schools, making art less reliable as a way to pay the bills.

to conclude, art proved to have great benefits to children mental development, nevertheless, it’s often seen as a nonprofitable activity proving that the rightest thing to do is to push young people to be realistic and focus on their careers investing time and effort in more profitable domains.

I need feedback for my writing. Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems,as well as practical problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

It is not as easy as we think, it varies from person to person,place,time and situation though we have to face problems. Here, it is stated that living is toughest in other countries being foreigners. It is a serious problem that every person needs to face at the time of speaking which causes great impact on social as well as practical life of human beings.In this essay, I will argue that problem being raised in societies for living,as well as finding jobs.

In context to social problems,living is really the toughest task to compete for a person to adjust and get settled in foreign culture. The most common problem among all is the language barrier, because it acts as a great wall for understanding between a native foreign speaker and an international citizen. Beside these, cultural norms and values may not be familiar,where people who come from out of the country celebrate it according to their country, which is not acceptable in the societies of people in foriegn nations.

On the other hand,lack of communication skills and proper confidence in speaking the language job placement would not be in favor. For instance, if any company gave the opportunities to work for them and unfortunately they knew that linguistic problem you have been facing then there is a chance of losing the job. Likewise, traveling within cities creates difficulties to find out the special destination they were looking for.

To sum up,the foriegn traveler should first practically as well as socially prepared to tackle any sorts of problems and difficulties they would probably get in their way while living as citizens of another country.

Art permeates our life and society and plays a pivotal role in cultural expression. I will discuss why I assume that it is crucial to teach children art, yet, we do not have to necessarily encourage them to concentrate on art other than their favorites.

Considering the merits of art education, it is reasonable to teach them in their childhood. First of all, art boosts creativity significantly. By drawing something in the blank and coming up with ideas, children learn how to create an unprecedented image by themselves. This is the variance of the invention that we expect from scientists or engineers. Therefore, children’s art class gives a resource of creativity simply more than fun.

However, does this indicate that we are obliged to prioritize art except for other subjects for children? We do not have to focus on only art since everyone has their own aptitude. Some people develop successfully their careers by playing sports or instruments at a young age. It demonstrates that not only art but also other subjects can aid them to cultivate their specialized ability. If a child prefers cooking to art or is called a piano prodigy by critics, should we encourage this young boy to sketch, paint regularly? It is very likely that he could waste his time, effort, and flair instead of benefiting from art class.

In conclusion, I believe that teaching children art is absolutely advantageous given its creativity development, although this does not imply that we should make children intensely learn the art.

Or is it not needed? I had an impression that the first paragraph after the introduction could probably address the statement made.

In this particular essay question, the first part is setting the scene. It provides context. Your task is to follow instructions. You have two questions to answer within the context given. There is no question which says “Do you think art is an important part of society? or “Do you think art is an expression of culture”. You need to identify if the statement given in the question is background context or if the instructions ask you to address it.

Hello Liz, For Writing task 2, can I use supporting ideas which may or may not be true in real life? for example “A recent survey suggests that most people prefer evenings, to watch movies, rather than mornings”. Is it okay to use this kind of made-up sentences?

You should not be using phrases such as “A recent survey suggests..” – The examiner is not interested in the source of your information.

Well, what i understand from your reply is that, the question must be clearly answered, with introduction, 2 to 3 body paragraphs, and conclusion, With all required ingredients such as the cohesion, linking words, grammar, spelling, etc.. Right?

I am appearing ielts this month 27th for the fifth time, where,for the first three attempts i got 6 in writing and last time 6.5..i need to score atleast 7 in writing to reach my dream.

I had been confused on the structure of essays, thinking that all essays must have examples compulsorily, and should avoid “ing” forms, etc. It would be of hreat help if you could share link, of essays, that you think i must gp through.

Using a gerund (a verb that has become a noun by using +ing) is a very useful grammar feature to include in your essays and certainly shouldn’t be avoided. Well, i have a doubt in the structing of different type of essays in task 2. My mentor taught me that there must be example in every para after the main point mentioned in each paragraphs.

But i could not find that pattern in your essay samples. Is the method i follow right or wrong. Please advice.

There is no such rule in IELTS. The examiner only marks if you have explained and developed your ideas in a relevant way. You need to distinguish between advice your teacher is giving you and actual fixed rules for the test. There a lot of flexibility for body paragraph content. In fact, if you are aiming for a high score, you need to be flexible.

There are no rules about using pronouns in IELTS. Teachers have their own recommendations of what to use to help you produce a better essay, but there are no fixed rules.

Dear Liz, Some people say that we should answer both parts of the question equally, meaning that we should write almost the same number of words in answering each part of the question, and that otherwise it might be considered ” addressing some parts of the question more fully than others” Is this correct ? because I noticed you wrote far more about the first part of the question than the second one in this essay. An essay which does not develop each idea fully, does not look like this model. It would have 2 sentences for one body paragraph, 6 for another and may be 4 for another – it would be very obviously unbalanced. The essay above has either 3 or 4 sentences for each body paragraph – that’s completely fine.

Thanks Liz, I just learnt the difference between the two words too. Actually they are two different words that convey different meanings. Art means fine art such as painting, drawing or sculpture. Arts represent subjects such as commerce, economics, philosophy, history and other such non-science subjects. This is the main difference between the two words.

All words are counted. This means ALL. Repeated words are counted – ALL words on the page. Do you really think the examiner will count how many times you use “a” or “the” and then calculate? Of course not.

Using language that you have memorised in order to impress the examiner will not help you.

I fully agree with the topic and my reason are 1. There are crucial problems, which need to be addressed and funded right away, such as poverty, crimes, illiteracy and deteriorating public health, that the government faces. 2. Only few people appreciate arts which makes it insensible to allot money for it.

Hi. I have noticed reading your model essays that you don’t usually list examples into your body paragraphs. Some instructors suggest examples should be added in almost all of body paragraphs one writes. A relevant example could be of child art prodigy ‘Akiane’ in my view. Don’t you think by not using any examples , it can impede chances to achieve band 8 or band 9? At least , that’s my understanding after reading through countless blogs and going through online videos of other instructors. Kindly enlighten me with your views. Thanks

Examples are not necessary. Yes, you can use them. But it won’t impede your score not to. Examples can also take the form of giving examples of situations rather than data or statistics or individual examples. All the best Liz

hi,liz can we state our opinion in ‘positive development or negative development’ essay. And while stating our opinion,where asked, in any type of essay what should be the arrangement of BPs. Hello I’ve noticed that you have never used a semicolon in your essays before. Is using semicolon instead of periods and commas in some sentences is better and gives more points?

Q: artist have low salaries. Do you think the government should provide a buget for them to increase their salaries?

Arts play an important role in our lives and artists should be compensated accordingly. However, in my opinion, the government should focus their budget more on critical issues in our society such as poverty, education and health. In this essay, I will discuss the importance of allocating the budget to these social problems.

To begin with, the government should concentrate on issues that directly affects the people in the society. The public funds should spend to create jobs to unemployed, promote education by creating more schools and provide affordable hospitalization and medical programs to the poor. These are vital in order for the society to function. Ultimately, when these problems has been resolved, economy will prosper, thus, increasing the budget of the government.

On the other hand, arts also generate income from entrace fees in the museum and art galleries. Some people enjoy arts and have financial capacity to spend money for arts. However, these does not warrant concrete reason for artists to get an increased on their salary.

In conclusion, government should prioritize the allocation of the budget on the projects that directly affects people’s lives .

Essay#36 | Culture

Ielts writing task 2 conclusion.

When you write the conclusion to your  IELTS Writing Task 2 essay  you should  paraphrase  the main points of the question instead of repeating them exactly. Remember:  paraphrasing is when you use different words to say the same thing.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people believe that a person’s culture is defined by their country of origin, while others believe that has only a minor influence.

Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model answer.

If we define culture as shared beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviours, it stands to reason then that a person’s country of origin impacts their culture. The question is to what degree. Is nationality the defining influence or is it just one of many factors in play? Personally speaking, I would say both arguments have validity, but I would lean towards the latter.

It is easy to understand the ‘defining influence’ argument. If someone is born and raised in a place, they will be heavily influenced by it. Psychologists refer to this as the ‘nurture argument’ – you are a product of your environment. For example, if your country’s cuisine uses certain ingredients, your palate gets accustomed to those ingredients, but may struggle with other less familiar flavours. If your country has a traditional style of music, say, reggae or rock, all citizens will be exposed to it and, as a result, are more likely to enjoy it.

On the other side of the argument we need to consider the effects of globalisation. Most people have daily access and exposure to other cultures. The evidence is all around us- restaurants, films and foreign businesses are ubiquitous. One of the benefits of globalisation is that it offers us a selection of cultural possibilities to choose from. It is unlikely that you will find any citizen of a certain country who does not have likes or preferences that come from outside of their country of origin. In addition, more and more people work, study or travel extensively away from their home country. Inevitably, these people will be subject to new influences.

My own view is that while we are influenced by our nationality, in this globalised world, one’s country of origin is only one aspect of our collective culture. We all adopt elements from other cultures on a daily basis, unconsciously or according to our preferences and experiences. To my mind, this is what makes the world such an interesting place.

In today’s world of advanced science and technology, we still greatly value our artists such as musicians, painters and w riters. What can arts tell us about life that science and technology cannot?

Direct question essay.

Introduction

• Paraphrase the question of the essay (In this modern era of nonstop scientific and technological advancement, artists still  command profound respect from people worldwide.)
• State what can be expected in the answer (There are a number of things about life that the arts can teach us that science and technology fail to do so.)
• Paragraph 1: Many forms of art, especially literature, can deliver messages about the appreciation of what we have in life as well as life itself. Hundreds of literary works choose to depict misery, misfortune, and sorrow that still exist in many places, and this sends the strongest message to those who do not appreciate their lives.
• Paragraph 2: Arts teach us to cherish the beauty of culture and are the fuel for our spiritual lives. This is extremely important in a world where science and technology seem to fade our belief in the gravity of culture in daily life.

Conclude your answer by concisely summing up (Although science and technology advance our understanding of all things and better our lives, arts can touch us to a much deeper extent, help us value what we have, and remind us of the significance of our culture.)

In this modern era of nonstop scientific and technological advancement, artists still command profound respect from people worldwide. There are a number of things about life that the arts can teach us that science and technology fail to do so.

Many forms of art, especially literature, can deliver messages about the appreciation of what we have in life as well as life itself. Hundreds of literary works choose to depict misery, misfortune, and sorrow that still exist in many places, and this sends the strongest message to those who do not appreciate their lives. “The Goldfinch”, for example, which narrates a resonant story about the miserable life the main character led after the unfortunate death of his mother does make each one of us wonder whether we have become heartless toward our own loved ones. And I doubt that there are any technologies in the world that could manage to convey such powerful messages .

Arts teach us to cherish the beauty of culture and are t he fuel for our spiritual lives . This is extremely important in a world where science and technology seem to fade our belief in the gravity of culture in daily life. The connection between arts and culture is here to stay, and traditional music and ancient paintings can remind us of where we came from and who we are at present. That is to say, our cultural identity is preserved in various forms of art.

Although science and technology advance our understanding of all things and better our lives , arts can touch us to a much deeper extent , help us value what we have, and remind us of the significance of our culture.

The strides and incredible advances science has made today is greater and mightier than ever before. However, art and culture are distinct niches altogether that can’t ever be overshadowed by the pace science has been moving forthwith and that is why artists are profoundly acknowledged and revered.

The essence of art and culture dates back to as long as human civilization has ever existed. The murals and paintings of Ajanta Ellora caves by themselves steadfast in the presence of art for a long time. It is undeniably true and inevitably essential that human brains as reportedly so, can’t execute well without the secretion of Dopamine, Oxytocin, Endorphins and serotonin, which are indeed triggered by art and music. In fact, as compared to the medications and antidepressants used for people undergoing hypertension and depression or other relevant mental anomalies, music has often be touted much more efficacious with no side effects at all.

Poetry, painting, narration, literature too, as a matter of fact, are unparalleled with regards to expounding and depicting human emotions, which can never be superseded by technologies ever. People often consider literature or other nuance of culture as slightly unpragmatic, which is a completely irrational argument. Intellectual demonstration of agony, euphoria, melancholy or exhilaration, is in no way, impractical. The folk tales, bedlams and even religion is one way or the other, related to the subtlety of art itself. Hence, is undoubtedly essential.

Conclusively, it may be stated that though science could say a lot about “What is life?”, however, it fails to impart “How to live?”, which is aptly and had always been in the past, entailed by art and culture.

In today’s world of advanced science and technology, we still greatly value our artists such as musicians, painters and writers. What can arts tell us about life that science and technology cannot?

In today’s era, people are much more rational than before as the advent of remarkable digital tools result from the feats of science and technology such as AI and digital machine have improved people’s life dramatically and people tend to make more informed decision owing to the augmentation of AI-based applications. On the other hand, gradually, the presence of arts and literature fade away as the contribution of poets, artists, and musicians is not highly appreciated. In fact, arts can teach us some essential values which technology cannot replicate.

As an origin, the artists tend to deliver inherent messages through their artworks. It provides emotional appeal to others if someone who is adept at interpreting art may acknowledge the exact values that author wants to convey. Nevertheless, as many people do not understand art thoroughly, people are failed to capture the lessons or values that can be applied to real life setting. Meanwhile, there are some learnt beliefs or values that people could not experience as these instilled values might be useful for the human development. For instance, by listening to Mozart’s music, someone can understand the authentic emotion of the composer at that moment and here is where building empathy originating. Besides, the word usage and a variety of expressive words used by the ancient writes describes the feelings and emotional states of the individual. Therefore, social values can be cultivated through the proper interpretation of arts.

Furthermore, arts and literary works enable individual to unleash one’s creativity as someone stimulates his neural networks to gain inspiration by attending a classical music concert. As a fact, the innovation always starts from how people imitate other’s pieces of work and improvise the work into a masterpiece. Apart from improvisation, the understanding of arts also aids in the psychological therapy. A good example is the psychologist is predicting the emotional and mental state of an individual through patient’s drawings. Apart from that, people tend to stay calm when they listen to slow rhythm music. With regards to that, it shows that a good music helps in the relaxation process and heals someone’s soul eventually as each person’s emotion is reverberating to how music plays in his or her ears. Therefore, a good grasp of art or music knowledge certainly helps in curing people’s emotional illness. Owing to music therapy, it is more effective than conventional treatment and medications to get rid someone from depression.

In conclusion, there are unthinkable benefits that art can contribute to the society evolution. It is our responsibility to fathom our life origins regardless of cultures, races, traditions, costumes, and nations. Without presence of art, our cultural identity does not exist. Hence, arts and culture study should be inserted into the school curriculum as we need to know the past to predict the future.

It is with no doubt that the credit for the advancement of human civilization from the stone age to the digital era that we live in today can be accounted to the developments in science and technology. However , our intellectual development can only be attributed to myriad art forms be it in the past or present. Technology may have made homo sapiens superior to any living being on earth but it is unequivocal that it is art which makes us all humane. Regions across the world are united by ballads , different kinds of dance forms, exemplary literature etc . Although we all be significantly different from one another , we all come together to appreciate the beauty of art as art and its beauty is universal . The benefits bestowed on us by technology may be numerous such as it has made cross country trade easier , communication faster , developed social standards in general although what still remains in this modern era is the primitive art forms which dates back to millions of years ago and still holds its place in today’s world. Art makes us ponder on various issues such as misery , love , genocide ,beauty etc which makes us rethink our whole values which forms the whole basis of our existence . A presentation on World War II may be made available by a desktop and transmitted to a wide range of people via the internet where by the statistics of the number of people who died and the places of where each mishap happened can be stated as facts However in order to invoke in the minds of people the feelings of hardships and suffering that was faced by those Jews back then could only be conveyed maybe by a film , a musical composition or a book written on it. Therefore as much as we can go on and on about how technology has transformed the way how we live what we must not forget is that it is art which makes us stay grounded to our roots from where we came from and makes living worthwhile.

The world has seen a lot of changes & transformation since the ‘Renaissance Man’ to the present age ‘Information Man’. Science and technology have not left even the Moon untouched but the one common thing that has remained constant and lingered around is the world of ‘Art’.

Over the years science and technology has shown the world many advancements. Be it the invention of electricity or the internet, or the development of vaccines to advanced medicines but one thing which art can teach us, which science and technology can never do and that one thing is telling us about life.

Art can teach us many valuable lessons of life. It tells us about how varied has been our culture. This is well demonstrated and documented in the performing arts over the years. Art teaches us about values, principles and ethics in life which no science or technology can teach us. Through the ancient scriptures and dance forms we have been able to get a glimpse of our ancient history and civilisations, the way of life during the golden era, an era which has taught us many values which are prevalent even to this day. Had it not been for ‘Arts’, human race would have long wiped them and forgotten them.

The symphonies of yester years are cherished even now. Famous symphonies of Beethowen have not lost their relevance till now. Such soothing music, which is again a piece of art tells us to slow down and enjoy every moment of the this wonderful life.

It is said that painting can be a great stress buster. If we had forgotten this beautiful expression in our mad race to advancements, we would have by now become robots and not remained humans. I firmly believe that it is only due to ‘Arts’ which has kept the ‘Human’ in us alive so far.

Thus to conclude I would like to reiterate that ‘Art’ can teach us many valuable life lessons which ‘Science and technology’ cannot and hence the importance of ‘Art’ in our lives.

This is an IELTS writing task 2 sample answer essay from the real exam on the topic of foreign films and their impact on local culture.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Foreign Films & Culture

Some believe that it is beneficial to show foreign films while others feel this can have a negative impact on local culture.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Sample Answer:

Some believe cinemas should show a  wide breadth  of films from around the world, while others worry about the  globalising effect  on  local culture . In my opinion, though  reliance  on  domestic film  can  contribute greatly  to the  cultural development  of a nation, it is too  severe  a  restriction .

Those  wary  of the  pernicious effects  of films from other countries  point to  the importance of  nationally produced films . When a country  imports  few films from  abroad , they are  forced into  making more and better movies to  attract audiences . For instance, in the 1980s  immediately after  the  cultural revolution in China , few foreign films were shows.  Studios  instead  funded ambitious  Chinese film-makers like Zhang Yimou, who would  later go on  to lead the early 1990s  ascent  of  Chinese new wave cinema . This  same pattern  has been  repeated  in South Korea, Japan, France, and  numerous  other countries at  different periods  in the  20th century . The  sum effect  on culture for each  respective nation  has been  massive  and,  in many cases ,  represents  their  most recent defining cultural achievements .

Nonetheless , watching foreign films allows individuals to enjoy the best entertainment  on offer . It would be  cruel  to  ban  foreign films and  enforce  a  sub-par viewing experience  in countries with  under-developed  film industries. Film is, after all, mainly an enjoyable  form  of relaxation. The most popular movies  tend to  come from Hollywood and include  blockbuster superhero franchises ,  Oscar-worthy dramas , and comedies. Many  local theatre chains  would  struggle  to  stay in business  without foreign films and the new online  streaming options  mean that  audiences  would likely just  subscribe  to Netflix or  download movies illegally . The  actual cultural benefits  of such  restrictions  might therefore be  questionable  while  theatre-goers  would surely be  deprived of quality recreation .

In conclusion, the examples of  isolated  national film industries do not  outweigh  the  diversionary value  of film. There are other methods of  preserving  and  encouraging  culture besides  censoring outside influences .

It is important to understand both sides before concluding.  Healthcare costs regularly increase, and individuals cannot pay for basic health facilities and checkups, especially in developing nations. Even if the Government cannot come up with more innovative healthcare methods, it can still offer free medical facilities to citizens who are unable to afford the same. Because only a healthy nation can be a productive nation. The Government may also ensure health insurance for free to secure the lives of citizens.  The education sector is also no less important. It should not be a choice, picking one sector over the other as both play a crucial role in the development and progress of any country. The Government should certainly invest in developing educational institutions throughout the country while coming up with more scholarships and financial grants for bright students who are pursuing higher education. The Government should emphasize healthcare and allocate funds for educational and socio-cultural development, which will uplift the community as a whole.  To conclude, it can be said that healthcare does require greater attention from the Government, considering that a majority of less-privileged citizens still lack access to basic healthcare facilities and their inability to afford the same. Healthcare will naturally be prioritized over education, although the Government should have a suitable allocation strategy for ramping up the education and cultural sectors as well.

While tech advancement has been a boon in many forms, it has also been a bane. As the screen time of individuals increases, the physical activities go down. The rise of computer-based working styles and smartphones has contributed to inactive daily lives worldwide. People prefer to binge-watch shows or scroll on social media for hours than undertake sports or other physical activity. Eating habits have changed too, with a high dependency on processed and packaged foods, once again owing to the modern and fast-paced lives we lead.  Despite the hurdles stated above, it is still easier to stay healthy and fit in recent times owing to the sheer volume of information available on proper nutrition and wellness. There are articles, videos, podcasts, and tips aplenty for people to stay healthy amidst the vagaries of modern life. Today's general trend leans more towards awareness about healthy eating, organic foods, better lifestyle practices, and achieving fitness goals without excessive stress.  Hence, it is still possible to take time out and gather information on building a healthier lifestyle. Technology itself has made it possible to stay updated and informed.  To conclude, it can be said that while there are more distractions and hindrances today for people to stay fit, it is always possible to get proper guidance at the click of a button and lay the foundation for a healthier and happier life.
