GE Aerospace expands Next Engineers program for Cincinnati youth

First cohort of cincinnati high-schoolers graduate, earn college scholarships.

GE Aerospace Foundation announced an additional $20 million investment in Next Engineers, a global college- and career-readiness program working to increase the diversity of young people in engineering.

A portion of this additional investment will benefit the Cincinnati location of Next Engineers , extending the program through 2028. The University of Cincinnati serves as the educational partner for local Cincinnati programming.

The Next Engineers: Engineering Academy, a three-year engineering education program for high-schoolers, graduated its first cohort of students last week. Students who complete the program and go on to pursue an engineering degree at an institution of higher education will receive a scholarship.

Nigel Adjei-Mensah, a Princeton High School senior, is one of 45 Cincinnati-area students who completed the Engineering Academy, which engages students in design challenges in small groups, career coaching, and college-readiness workshops to equip them with the skills they need to build an engineering career. Like some of his fellow Engineering Academy classmates, Adjei-Mensah plans to attend the University of Cincinnati.

“The Next Engineers scholarship I will receive for completing the program will help facilitate my path to pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering ,” Adjei-Mensah said. “The immersive design challenges that we go through during Engineering Academy and also the career coaching that we receive from GE Aerospace employees has opened my eyes to a whole new world of engineering.”

Through this program, students can gain an understanding of what it's like to study engineering in college and the impact they can make working as an engineer – solving the big challenges of tomorrow.

Whitney Gaskins, Associate Dean of UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science, shared the impact Next Engineers has on local youth and their families. She spoke with Germain Hunter, Chief Diversity Officer, GE Aerospace, at the announcement of GE Aerospace Foundation and its added investment in Next Engineers. Photo/GE Aerospace

“Through the Next Engineers program, we are not just shaping young minds, but empowering them to shape the future of engineering,” said Whitney Gaskins, PhD, Associate Dean of the University of Cincinnati’s College of Engineering and Applied Science . “These graduates exemplify the dedication and potential of our youth, and I have no doubt they will continue to inspire and innovate as they embark on their engineering journeys.”

Engineering Academy students learn to solve problems through engineering while working on small-team projects, including building mousetrap-powered cars and designing water filtration systems. Exploring college campuses and interacting with working engineers helps them to imagine themselves as college students and future engineers. The program also instills essential skills including teamwork, communication and public speaking.

“These students have committed three years and more than 200 hours to learning about engineering concepts, designing prototypes and solving complex problems,” said GE Aerospace Chairman and CEO H. Lawrence Culp, Jr. “These graduates carry with them the legacy of Next Engineers as they continue on in their educational journey.”

In the fall of 2021, the GE Foundation established Next Engineers in four cities around the world, including Cincinnati. The newly launched GE Aerospace Foundation picks up the mantle to invest further in this successful program.

The Next Engineers program offers three programs to engage students and spark interest in engineering: Engineering Camp for students ages 14-15, Engineering Discovery for students ages 13-14, and Engineering Academy for students ages 15-18. Thus far, more than 4,000 local students have participated in the Cincinnati programs. For more information, visit nextengineers.org .

Formation upskills displaced tech workers with ai-driven education.

Dynamic cohorts and content keep students on the optimal flightpath.

With new waves of technology constantly emerging and nearly 250,000 tech workers displaced, the need for upskilling and retooling is pervasive. Since at least the 1960s , tech companies and universities have been exploring ways of using technology to allow the latter to serve the former, a need driven by the fact that the skills engineers require as undergraduates need to be continually refreshed if they are to meet the demands of a fast-changing tech world. As rates of technological change continue to increase, and with the emergence of technologies like blockchain, large language models, generative pre-trained transformers, and other types of AI, not only is the education one receives when at college quickly outdated, but the education provided by colleges may not be the best way to learn what companies are looking for. Something faster and more relevant is needed.

Against this backdrop, Formation has created an adaptable learning system that harnesses AI to solve this problem for software engineers and other technical workers looking to transition from mid-level positions to senior ones. Through a dynamic approach to constructing courses and cohorts that locks the outcome while varying the time, Formation has shown the potential to deliver life-changing outcomes, with students seeing significant returns on their educational investment .

Individual Differences And Individualized Approaches

The biggest challenge of teaching any group of students is the fact no matter how similar they may be, they will inevitably need different things at different times if their educational trajectory is to be optimal.

When I was directing the Education Program for Gifted Youth at Stanford University, we would often confront the following scenario. A group of parents would find themselves at a school, perhaps at some sporting event, and would begin to share frustrations about the pace of their children's mathematics course. The frustration would inevitably be that they spend too much time reviewing things their kid already knows. Collectively, they would wish they could have a teacher ready to quickly go through the easier material and slowly go through the more difficult. What the parents would inevitably fail to recognize, but what the data clearly showed, is that what one student finds hard, another will find easy, and this will remain true no matter how rarefied the population is. Time and again, the conclusion was clear: individual differences are robust and multidimensional.

Consider, then, that if even a subject as stable as elementary school mathematics was hard to optimize in a classroom, how much harder must it be working with a constantly evolving curriculum where students come to the class with radically diverse backgrounds and knowledge?

Ghost Of Tsushima Is Already Flooded With Negative Reviews On Steam

Biden-trump debates: what to know as trump pushes for 2 more faceoffs, wwe smackdown results winners and grades with stratton vs belair.

To optimize a class for such a group of students, at least three things must be done:

  • Understand what students already know so that time is not wasted reteaching
  • Understand the destination students are after
  • Understand how, given where they are, what the next thing they need to learn is to be on the optimal path toward that destination.

This is the problem that Formation is addressing with its dynamic learning system.

Dynamic Cohorts And Adaptive Learning

Formation takes a dynamic approach to solving the problem of effective cohort formation and determining targeted content delivery. Each week, their adaptive learning system dynamically assembles cohorts based on a set of proprietary parameters, including the goals of students and their current velocity along their learning trajectories. Each cohort will meet as a class to work with a mentor on that week’s topic. At the end of the week, students are assessed, the cohorts are refreshed, and new classes are assembled. This approach ensures that students remain in their zone of proximal development and that no one moves forward without first attaining the knowledge needed to take the next step.

Sophie Novati, CEO and co-founder of Formation, sees this style of adaptive learning as so clearly superior that she envisions a future where the idea that once upon a time, you could get a class schedule on Day 1, delineating what would happen in each future class session, will seem preposterous. No matter who is learning, it is inevitable that they will be different from their peers in their starting points, their trajectories, and their ultimate destination. Rather than chain students together in the expectation they will advance in lockstep with their classrooms, Formation sets each person free to reach their end goal as soon as possible while ensuring that they have learned what they set out to learn when they arrive.

With their adaptive learning environment, Formation can assure students that given where they are and whether they want to go, Formation will ensure they are on the shortest path from A to B. From a student's point of view, they can trust that Formation will see them through to the end, no matter how long it takes. Formation is so confident that it will deliver optimal results that it offers unlimited access memberships that provide continuing training until the student is placed. These can be paid for in several ways, ranging from all-at-once deferred loan payments to income-based repayments.

In the end, as a company, Formation is committed to getting students where they want to be. As regards how long that might take, the simple answer is “as soon as possible.”

Krajacic named Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education

Predrag Krajacic, MD, has been named associate dean of undergraduate medical education for the School of Medicine Columbia, interim dean Gerald Harmon, MD, has announced. Krajacic joins the SOMC team from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, where he serves as the assistant dean for curricular affairs.

Krajacic will lead an exceptional UME team at the School of Medicine Columbia. Brian Keisler, MD, has served as the interim associate dean for UME for the last several months, and will continue in that role until Krajacic officially begins his duties in Columbia on September 1.

“We are quite fortunate to have an individual with Dr. Krajacic’s credentials, experience, and talent join us as we continue to grow and improve our educational infrastructure at the School of Medicine Columbia,” Harmon commented.

“We remain indebted to Dr. Brian Keisler for his exceptional work serving in the interim role since the beginning of the year and for remaining engaged in the position while Dr. Krajacic comes onboard and integrates and joins our team of extremely talented educators.”

Krajacic is excited for the next step in his career as a medical educator and leader at USC.

I am thrilled to be embarking on this new journey with SOMC, joining an incredible team of dedicated professionals. This is an exciting time of growth for the school, and I am eager to contribute to its vibrant future.

Krajacic earned his medical degree from the University of Belgrade (Serbia) School of Medicine and completed his postdoctoral training in muscle physiology and disease at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He then joined the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2013 as an assistant professor in the biomedical sciences department, eventually receiving tenure and promotion, becoming the only faculty member with a dual appointment in both the biomedical sciences and clinical sciences departments.

In his current role, Krajacic holds several key responsibilities, including curricular implementation, oversight and renewal, and other aspects of pre-clinical medical education. While at WVSOM, Krajacic has served on several committees, including as the current chair of the Curriculum Building Committee, and previous chair of both the Curriculum Review and Research Committees, the latter of which he chaired for four years. He also played an integral role in a recent site visit and accreditation cycle for WVSOM by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation, which resulted in continued accreditation for the school.

In addition to his role at WVSOM, Krajacic also serves as a faculty member for two professional development courses for medical educators at Harvard Medical School’s Harvard Macy Institute. During his career he has collected several accolades, including WVSOM’s Outstanding Faculty Award (2016) and the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (2008), and has also authored, or co-authored, numerous publications.

2024 Presidential Arts and Humanities Fellows selected to advance research, creative projects

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A signature Indiana University program that amplifies and accelerates the work of outstanding arts and humanities faculty recently selected its latest cohort. The Presidential Arts and Humanities Fellowship is an annual program that supports the work of IU faculty who are improving society and revitalizing communities through their research and creative activity, and poised to become national and international leaders in their fields.

Supported by the IU Office of the President and IU Research, and administered by the university’s assistant vice president for research, the fellowship awards $50,000 of flexible funding to each recipient to support a variety of needs as they pursue innovative research and creative projects. President Pamela Whitten started the program in 2022.

Along with funding, recipients gain access to professional development programming and advanced training in the areas of grant writing, scholarly communication with the public, media training and digital scholarship, among other specialized trainings.

Indiana University President Pamela Whitten poses with the previous cohort of Presidential Arts and Humanities Fellows at Bryan House on ...

The goal of the IU Presidential Arts and Humanities Fellowship program is to amplify and promote the rich and diverse opportunities within the arts and humanities at Indiana University and to ensure the recipients have continued success as they make impactful changes in their fields and in local, national and international communities.

“Congratulations to the 2024 Presidential Arts and Humanities Fellows,” Whitten said. “The recipients of this fellowship exemplify the standard that is set by our faculty at Indiana University, which has long been a leader in the arts and humanities. This fellowship represents the university’s steadfast commitment to supporting the pursuit of transformative research and creativity across our campuses, which helps us better understand the world and revitalizes communities.”

The 2024 IU Presidential Arts and Humanities Fellows are:

Allison Baker

Allison Baker is an associate professor of fine arts in the Herron School of Art and Design on IIU’s Indianapolis campus. She will construct a body of work and monumental public sculptures that memorialize the complexities of late-stage capitalism, illuminating the aspirations and struggles of the American working class and working poor.

Baker seeks to build monuments that challenge dominant narratives, humanize the ripple effects of poverty and create work that the American working class and working poor can see as a reflection of their own experiences in galleries and museums, which are spaces where they are seldom represented.

Emily Beckman

Emily Beckman is an associate professor and director of the Medical Humanities and Health Studies Program in the School of Liberal Arts on the Indianapolis campus. Beckman is co-founder of Build Community Give Care, a nonprofit organization that provides compassionate end-of-life care in Africa.

She will use the funding to support research addressing the need for palliative care education in Uganda. Outcomes will include a better understanding of the pathways available for palliative care education and access in Uganda, solutions for better retention in these educational programs and the development of medical humanities curricula at IU.

Catherine Bowman

Catherine Bowman , professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington, is an award-winning poet, author of several collections of poetry and the editor of “Word of Mouth: Poems Featured on NPR’s ‘All Things Considered.’”

Bowman will use the fellowship funding for travel and archival research to make significant progress on her sixth poetry collection, tentatively titled “Volver, Volver: An Underworld Intergenre Pilgrimage.” The collection will imagine and recount various underworld encounters with several generations of women.

Andrew Goldman

Andrew Goldman is an assistant professor of music in music theory at the Jacobs School of Music and assistant professor of cognitive science in the College of Arts and Sciences. He directs the IU Music and Mind Lab , an interdisciplinary research group that investigates music perception and cognition and the role of music in the human condition.

Goldman will use the fellowship funding to explore the critical challenges and contributions of incorporating cognitive science into music studies. He will research how music cognition researchers’ historical and cultural situations have influenced their scientific work and the nature of their findings.

Raiford Guins

Raiford Guins is a professor and the director of Cinema and Media Studies at The Media School in Bloomington. He is also an adjunct professor of informatics. He plans to use the funds to support research travel that will aid in the development of his book, tentatively titled “Museum Games.”

The book will explore the emerging area of games and gaming culture in museums, libraries and archives worldwide. For example, the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, recently completed a $70 million expansion, while The Nintendo Museum plans its long-anticipated opening in Kyoto, Japan, in 2024. Guins will detail the relatively new phenomenon of gaming museums and preservation from an academic perspective.

Lisa Lenoir

Lisa Lenoir is an assistant professor who teaches courses in The Media School’s new Fashion Media Program in Bloomington. Her research examines contemporary cultural phenomena in media discourses in journalism studies, activism and identity, and consumer culture.

Lenoir will use the funds to research the life and work of Chicago Defender journalist Mattie Smith Colin, a fashion and food editor who covered the return of Emmett Till’s body from Mississippi to Chicago in 1955. Linda Pisano

Linda Pisano is chair and professor in the Department of Theatre, Drama and Contemporary Dance in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington. Her fellowship is sponsored by the Big Ten Academic Alliance and the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs.

Pisano will use the fellowship funding to research methods and mechanisms in cultivating new audiences, patrons and donors of the arts and humanities on university campuses during increasingly difficult times. Her research will include investigating interest in community outreach, education, socio-political advocacy and identity, among other areas. Pisano hopes to ensure that universities are communicating the value of arts and humanities as fundamental to their institutional identity and the public spaces they occupy.

Spencer Steenblik

He will use the funds to develop several projects, including producing and testing an innovative structural joint and pursuing a patent. The previous cohort of fellows made advancements across a multitude of disciplines with the funding and resources provided by the IU Presidential Arts and Humanities Fellowship, including composing a chamber music and AI opera that will premiere next year and erecting a floating monument that spotlights underrepresented communities in Chicago.

Former South Africa leader Zuma promises jobs and free education as he launches party manifesto

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Former South African President Jacob Zuma Saturday lamented the high levels of poverty among black South Africans and promised to create jobs and tackle crime as he launched his new political party’s manifesto ahead of the country’s much anticipated elections.

He told thousands of supporters who gathered at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg that his party would build factories where many people would be employed and provide free education to the country’s youth.

“We want our children to study for free, especially those from poor households because the poverty we have was not created by us. It was created by settlers who took everything, including our land. We’ll take all those things back, make money and educate our children,” he said.

He has also pledged to change the country’s Constitution to restore more powers to traditional leaders, saying their role in society has been reduced by giving more powers to magistrates and judges.

Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe party, known as the MK Party, has emerged as a significant player in South Africa’s upcoming elections after it was launched in December last year.

He is currently involved in a legal battle with the country’s electoral authority, the Independent Electoral Commission. He has appealed against a court judgment which barred him from standing in the election because of his criminal record.

Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison for defying a court order to appear before a judicial commission of inquiry which was probing corruption allegation in government and state-owned companies during his presidential term from 2009 to 2018.

In 2018, he was forced to resign as the country’s president following wide-ranging corruption allegations, but he has made a political return and is now seeking to become the country’s president again.

“When they talk about unemployment, they are talking about us, there is nobody else. When they talk about people who leave in shacks, that is us, there is nobody else who lives in shacks except us,” Zuma told his supporters, many of whom had travelled from other provinces like Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, where he still enjoys significant support.

Poverty among black people is the reason behind South Africa’s high levels of crime, according to the former president.

“Our hunger and poverty is what creates a perception that we are criminals, we don’t have a brain, we have nothing. That time is over, because we are good people who are giving, but some people are pushing us towards criminality,” he said.

Zuma said his party was aiming to get more than 65% of the national vote in the upcoming elections as it would allow them to change many laws in the country’s constitution.

Recent polls and analysts have suggested that the ruling African National Congress might get less than 50% of the vote and would need to form a coalition with smaller parties to remain in power.

South Africans will go to the polls on May 29.
