irrational number. The square root of two does not terminate, and it does not repeat a pattern. It cannot be written as a quotient of two integers, so it is irrational.

The Associative Properties state that the sum or product of multiple numbers can be grouped differently without affecting the result. This is because the same operation is performed (either addition or subtraction), so the terms can be re-ordered.

1.2 Section Exercises

No, the two expressions are not the same. An exponent tells how many times you multiply the base. So 2 3 2 3 is the same as 2 × 2 × 2 , 2 × 2 × 2 , which is 8. 3 2 3 2 is the same as 3 × 3 , 3 × 3 , which is 9.

It is a method of writing very small and very large numbers.

1.5 Section Exercises

The terms of a polynomial do not have to have a common factor for the entire polynomial to be factorable. For example, 4 x 2 4 x 2 and −9 y 2 −9 y 2 don’t have a common factor, but the whole polynomial is still factorable: 4 x 2 −9 y 2 = ( 2 x + 3 y ) ( 2 x −3 y ) . 4 x 2 −9 y 2 = ( 2 x + 3 y ) ( 2 x −3 y ) .

Divide the x x term into the sum of two terms, factor each portion of the expression separately, and then factor out the GCF of the entire expression.

Listen: we know homework isn’t fun, but it is a good way to reinforce the ideas and concepts you’ve learned in class. But what if you’re really struggling with your homework assignments?

If you’ve looked online for a little extra help with your take-home assignments, you’ve probably stumbled across websites claiming to provide the homework help and answers students need to succeed . But can homework help sites really make a difference? And if so, which are the best homework help websites you can use?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help websites–free and paid. We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help websites
  • The cost of homework help websites
  • The five best homework websites out there
  • The pros and cons of using these websites for homework help
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using online homework help
  • Tips for getting the most out of a homework help website

So let’s get started!

The Basics About Homework Help Websites–Free and Paid

Homework help websites are designed to help you complete your homework assignments, plain and simple.

What Makes a Homework Help Site Worth Using

Most of the best sites allow users to ask questions and then provide an answer (or multiple possible answers) and explanation in seconds. In some instances, you can even send a photo of a particular assignment or problem instead of typing the whole thing out!

Homework help sites also offer more than just help answering homework questions. Common services provided are Q&A with experts, educational videos, lectures, practice tests and quizzes, learning modules, math solving tools, and proofreading help. Homework help sites can also provide textbook solutions (i.e. answers to problems in tons of different textbooks your school might be using), one-on-one tutoring, and peer-to-peer platforms that allow you to discuss subjects you’re learning about with your fellow students.

And best of all, nearly all of them offer their services 24/7, including tutoring!

What You Should Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of scam sites out there willing to prey on desperate students. Before you sign up for any service, make sure you read reviews to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

A word to the wise: the more a company advertises help that veers into the territory of cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. The best homework help websites are going to help you learn the concepts you’ll need to successfully complete your homework on your own. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” a little later!)

You don't need a golden piggy bank to use homework help websites. Some provide low or no cost help for students like you!

How Expensive Are the Best Homework Help Websites?

First of all, just because a homework help site costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. Likewise, just because a homework help website is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best websites, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

The 5 Best Homework Help Websites

So, what is the best homework help website you can use? The answer is that it depends on what you need help with.

The best homework help websites are the ones that are reliable and help you learn the material. They don’t just provide answers to homework questions–they actually help you learn the material.

That’s why we’ve broken down our favorite websites into categories based on who they’re best for . For instance, the best website for people struggling with math might not work for someone who needs a little extra help with science, and vice versa.

Keep reading to find the best homework help website for you!

Best Free Homework Help Site: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads.

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

  • Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school.

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects.

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers.

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

  • Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want
  • Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help.

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter!

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!

body-studtypool-logo

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

  • Best for: Science homework help
  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites

First, let’s take a look at the benefits.

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts.

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

body_stophand

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option.

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service!

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get.

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating.

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Tip 4: Set a Budget

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Tip 5: Read the Reviews

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

A site update is coming soon. I will be changing the layout a bit so that to keep the solvers in a more organized way and the articles will be organized rather in blog format. I will be adding a complete set of Algebra solvers, so stay tuned.

A couple of tutorials and solvers were added: Quadratic Formula: The meaning of the term -b/2a , an article about Algebra 2 and a Line Plot Maker

I have added a couple of new articles for your reading enjoyment: Math Articles

I have added a minimum sample size calculator for mean and proportion

After long working hours, I've finished all the solvers required to cover all basic statistics topics. The new solvers are: Z-test for two means , Z-test for two proportions , T-test for two means , T-test for paired samples , Chi-Square Goodness of fit , and Chi-Square test of Independence . I also added the most important non-parametric tests, which are the Sign Test , also Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test , as well as the Wilcoxon Rank-Sum Test and Kruskal-Wallis

I get asked to review different online curricula. Thanks to a guest writer, I just added a great article about online accounting curricula. You can check it here .

Found a very informational article about the do's and dont's of Accounting Homework Help. You can check it here .

Great changes to improve user experience are coming very soon. I have written recently many math and stats solvers that I'll be adding to the site. I've been polishing the scripts we already have and this is almost turning into a full time job. As many users are aware, we have had ads for the last few months, and even though I don't like ads, it is the only way to support the site, which is turning into a full time job by now. I'm looking for a more efficient way of using ads so that the site can be ad-supported and it continue being free that way.

More Stats tests done. I have finished a t-test for one population mean with unknown population standard deviation and a Chi-Square test for one population variance . Pretty much as the other solvers I have added, they are simple to use: define hypotheses, and parameters of the test, and a detailed step-by-step calculation is performed.

I've been working on these for a while and I finally finished them. I added a z-test for one population mean and a z-test for one population proportion . Very user friendly, define hypotheses, and parameters of the test, and a detailed step-by-step calculation is performed. Recommended.

I just added a working histogram maker . You enter the dataset and the number of bins and a properly scaled histogram is rendered by the script.

I have added a very cool bar graph maker . You enter the categories, the values associated with each of the categories, and a bar chart rendered by the script.

Not exactly the typical calculator we do, but I have had some requests for it, so I added a simple mortgage calculator tool to compute the monthly payment for a mortgage, under basic assumptions (without considering PMI and insurance).

I have uploaded a 2x2 system of linear equations solver.

I have updated the pie chart maker script.

I have added two confidence interval calculators. They are confidence intervals for the population mean μ when the population standard deviation σ is known and for when the and a population standard deviation is not known .

We have two more probability calculators. They are a binomial distribution calculator and a Poisson distribution calculator .

I have added two new probability calculators, based on a couple of requests I had. They are a exponential distribution calculator and a uniform distribution calculator .

I have added a new article. Check it out here .

I have added a correlation coefficient calculator . This time, the script is more user friendly, and checks for errors in the data before processing them.

I received a whole lot of e-mails asking for a tool to calculate grades. Well, I just did it. With this online grade calculator you are able to input your assignment/test scores and the calculator will tell your final score and final letter grade. And if you don't have all the grades, the calculator will tell you what score you need to get in your final assignment/test in order to get an A.

After some time of silence, I'm back. As many of you know, I run this site on my spare time trying to keep it as updated as possible. I'm very pleased to see the positive effect the math tools we offer in our site are having in the community. Countless e-mails thanking me for the work I put in the site make me want to keep working even harder. The free online math calculator we provide in the site have even been used as references in scientific papers. That is very cool indeed! I have great plans for the site. Keep visiting.

Our good friends at MGT are giving specially for us this 15% discount code for their online math homework help services: mthcrk1501 . From references given by users of our community, they are very reliable.

Summer is over, and time is back for some math. We have great plans for this year. Our aim is to offer the best quality free math help, for which reason we will continue adding more and more useful content. We also expect to materialize some very interesting partnerships. Stay tuned!

As promised, a couple of critical values calculators have been added: z-distribution critical values and t-distribution critical values

A t-distribution probability calculator was added. This is the first delivery of a series of scripts that will be added. Coming soon a couple of online calculators for critical values for the z-distribution and the t-distribution.

I just added an article about math problem solving techniques. See article

We have added more than 300 solved statistics problems

Due to a problem with a configuration file the scripts in the site were not working for a while, now they are working fine. Sorry for the inconvenience.

A good tutorial about the normal distribution was added. The normal distribution and the standard normal distribution

I added a good list of solved statistics problems.

I made a few adjustments to the scatterplot module, and added a new regression line tool, to complement the existing tool. Linear Regression Calculator

This new resource seems to be very useful, you may find it interesting to take a look Free Statistics Help

The site is back up online. For problems out of my control the site was down for a couple of weeks. We'll be back with new material. Thanks to everyone.

I have found a good collection of free solved math problems and math answers.

There is a "Search" box on every page to help you find whatever math content you're looking for — without encountering ads masquerading as search results. Whether you're in middle school, high school, college, or university, these free algebra lessons can help you out!

How can I use Purplemath's lessons?

Purplemath's math lessons can be used in many ways:

  • Read the lesson that relates to what you're about to study in class, so you get to class at least somewhat prepared.
  • Print out the lesson that relates to what you're about to study in class, and use the margins, white space, or the backs of pages for taking notes in class.
  • When the homework seems impossible and the textbook and your class notes aren't helping much, come to Purplemath for clarification.

Let Purplemath help you always be prepared!

Go to the lessons!

How should I be formatting my homework?

Neat homework can aid your comprehension and might make your teacher like you better. Purplemath's " Homework Guidelines for Mathematics " will give you a leg up, explaining in clear terms what your math teacher is looking for. The Guidelines link to examples of common errors, and demonstrate techniques that your instructors will love! In addition, students who get in the habit of explaining themselves clearly in their homework gain greater understanding of what they're doing, and therefore tend to do much better on their tests.

English teachers tell their students explicitly how to format their papers: what fonts, what page margins, what style guides, etc. Math teachers, on the other hand, frequently just complain amongst themselves in the faculty lounge about how messy their students' work is. Meanwhile, their students wonder why they've lost points on homework and tests.

Study these Guidelines , print out this " formatting " PDF, and improve your learning, retention, and test scores. Don't leave easy points on the table!

Go to the Guidelines!

How can I measure my study skills?

Many students, from time to time, wonder, "Do I have what it takes to succeed in math?" Much of one's success or failure in algebra can be laid at the feet of one's study habits. Do you have good math study habits? Take this survey and find out.

Go to the study-skills self-survey!

Homework help & tutoring.

Mathematics

Our name 24HourAnswers means you can submit work 24 hours a day - it doesn't mean we can help you master what you need to know in 24 hours. If you make arrangements in advance, and if you are a very fast learner, then yes, we may be able to help you achieve your goals in 24 hours. Remember, high quality, customized help that's tailored around the needs of each individual student takes time to achieve. You deserve nothing less than the best, so give us the time we need to give you the best.

If you need assistance with old exams in order to prepare for an upcoming test, we can definitely help. We can't work with you on current exams, quizzes, or tests unless you tell us in writing that you have permission to do so. This is not usually the case, however.

We do not have monthly fees or minimum payments, and there are no hidden costs. Instead, the price is unique for every work order you submit. For tutoring and homework help, the price depends on many factors that include the length of the session, level of work difficulty, level of expertise of the tutor, and amount of time available before the deadline. You will be given a price up front and there is no obligation for you to pay. Homework library items have individual set prices.

We accept credit cards, debit cards, PayPal, Venmo, ApplePay, and GooglePay.

How to organize your environment for math homework?

Organizing your study properly is the key to success, productivity, and fast results. Every student should understand that time is very precious so that you should understand what approach works best for you and maximizes your productivity.

By organizing your study environment properly, you will understand the assignment quickly and get down to work without hesitations, driven by the desire to accomplish your small goal. There are some tips concerning the organization you need to know if you plan to get the best result!

  • Set clear goals ☑

First, you need to understand the core point of that assignment. It would be a great idea to divide the whole assignment into small goals because this way, you will see small progress by taking small steps, motivating you to move further and dont forget about math software that can help you to organize your time correctly.

  • Create a schedule ☑

Chaos in your timetable is the enemy of productivity and effectiveness. Choose the exact time you can devote to your math assignment and stick to your schedule. Try to pick the time frame when you feel most productive and motivated to ensure you can immerse yourself in that task.

  • Take notes ☑

By jotting down new concepts, formulas, and strategies, you will reinforce your understanding and make important information easy to remember.

  • Gather resources ☑

Take time to collect all necessary materials that provide instructions and guidelines for your assignment. You should have all textbooks, notebooks, online resources, or calculators at hand to reduce distraction and tune in to the studying mood.

  • Work methodically ☑

Apply a systematic approach to each assignment by dividing it into smaller pieces of work. Also, make it easy for you to identify the mistakes and monitor your progress.

How to do math homework effectively and without time waste?

Taking into account the number of conducted researches based on scientific evidence and well-known facts about the way our brain can work more effectively in order to reach better results, there are some tips and pieces of advice which you are recommended to stick to.

  • ☑ Get rid of all distractions.

In general, when doing the math assignment, you are required to follow a certain set of sequences because every math goal can be reached by following a logically structured chain. Therefore, your brain should focus on finding the solution to the problem, but not on the side of distractions like phones, toys, or other objects on your table that may catch your attention and cause you to lose focus.

  • ☑ Read the instructions and stick to them.

Always start examining the requirements and instructions from your professor because it will give you a basic understanding of the assignments and push you to the right thoughts, thus making you move in the right direction. For your convenience, you may create a draft or diagram with the sequence of your actions to see and perceive the plan visually.

  • ☑ Begin with a more difficult assignment.

It is a psychological trick that helps you keep the motivation for completing all the assignments. When you start with the most challenging tasks and then move to easier ones, you are more effective and have the resources to complete all your goals.

  • ☑ Take regular short breaks.

Our brain functions in a way that it cannot keep concentration on one particular thing for a long time; that is why it is important to make short pauses. You can go for a brisk walk, talk to friends, do a quick gymnastics, listen to music, or meditate. It is crucial to let your brain switch to another type of activity to make it work more effectively.

  • ☑ Cooperate with your study friends.

It makes studying less dull and gives you a unique opportunity to generate new ideas, come to interesting conclusions, broaden your horizons, and look at the problem from different angles. Overall, you can share your progress and motivate each other not to give up and keep pace.

  • ☑ Seek expert help.

Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance if you are unsure about something. You are not supposed to figure out everything on your own, so feel free to contact someone who can explain particular things to you. Furthermore, we live in a world of cutting-edge technologies, so nowadays, there are many digital tools that can significantly ease your studying process and find a correct math rubric .

  • ☑ Double-check answers for accuracy before submission.

As practice shows, additional revision helps to find the mistakes that could have occurred simply because of inattention.

So, in any case, you should put in time and effort to nail your math homework because, as we all know, “rolling stone gathers no moss.”

Reinforce math skills with meaningful homework. Get tips on making math homework effective, and discover engaging resources like puzzles and task cards.

You plan engaging math lessons. Your students seem to get it, mostly, and you provide a variety of math practice activities. Do they really need math homework too? Absolutely.

Math homework is essential for consolidating skills and building math fluency.

You can think of math homework as review. Math homework means students get practice outside the school day and between lessons. Sometimes students can demonstrate a skill right after they learn it, but to remember it, they need additional practice for retention.

You can also think of math homework as additional practice. As students practice more and get more confident with particular skills, they are able to do the work more easily and more quickly, building fluency.

Math homework also provides an opportunity for students to practice learning independently, prepare for tests, practice study skills, and work on thinking skills.

Make the most of math homework

Math homework is essential, so you want to make the most of it. That means homework that provides review and practice around the concepts you’ve covered recently in class. Homework can cover a lesson of the day or week, and might also review a past skill.

Homework should be simple—you want the focus to be on the actual math, not struggling to figure out directions. It should also be at the right level—you want students to have some challenge and some success.

Mix it up with your math homework

Kids will groan about a worksheet full of problems every day. There’s nothing wrong with worksheets, but there are other great ways for kids to practice math. A variety keeps things interesting, so mix up the activities you give them for home practice. For example, try puzzles, task cards, or even math games .

Worksheets and puzzles

Say you are teaching skip counting. You could alternate skip counting worksheets and skip counting puzzles .

You can choose puzzles and worksheets based on different students’ understanding or keep upleveling them over the time you are teaching skip counting. For example start with skip counting by 10s starting on a 10 and going to 90. Add complexity by using non-10s as a starting point, moving beyond 100, or counting backward.

You can give students a set of task cards at the beginning of the week and have them due at the end of the week. This allows students to practice time management and have multiple ways to demonstrate that they understand the material.

Time. For example, if you are teaching about time, you could use our Time Task Cards , which allow students to practice:

  • Telling the time on an analog clock
  • Showing the time on an analog clock
  • Writing the time in different ways
  • Using analog and digital time interchangeably
  • Working out elapsed time
  • Showing elapsed time
  • Ordering time

Place Value. If you need 4th grade math homework to practice place value, use Place Value Task Cards to help your students build a strong number sense. When you send these task cards as homework, students will work on identifying, comparing and ordering numbers to thousands.

Multiplication . Our Multiplication Task Cards help students:

  • Recall and use times tables up to 12 x 12
  • Multiply whole numbers by one digit numbers
  • Multiply whole numbers by two digit numbers
  • Use the halving and doubling strategy to solve equations
  • Determine unknown whole numbers in a multiplication equation

Instead of drilling over and over, task cards provide different kinds of activities to give students practice in the target area.

Make the most of math homework, without taking a lot out of you. Check out our task cards, skip counting puzzles, worksheets and other math activities . These done for you resources make providing the practice your students need a snap.

Hi! I'm Jon, and I am a full-time tutor who specializes in helping students with standardized tests, homework, and college application essays. In 2009, I graduated from Bates College with a degree in political science, and I started my teaching career when I joined The Princeton Review. I earned a perfect score on the SAT while applying to TPR, and during my time at that company, I helped over 500 students prepare for the SAT through group instruction and one-on-one tutoring. After a few years at TPR, I became an independent tutor who has built a reputation for showing students how to ace the SAT, ACT, ISEE, and SSAT, as well as for tutoring students who have improved in order to get A's on their algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and writing assignments for school.

I have worked with a very wide range of students, ranging from eight-year-olds to adults. High-flying students determined to get a perfect score or a nearly perfect score on a standardized test; students struggling with dyslexia, ADHD, or testing-anxiety; students who are very smart but who need to improve their motivation and executive functioning skills - I have successfully tutored all of them.

I tailor the tutoring process to the goals and needs of the individual student. Everything from the materials that we use, to the way that I present new concepts, to the way that I help a student ingrain what we've gone over, to how long the lessons are, is calibrated based on what's best for the particular student.

My students, after significantly improving their scores, have chosen to attend schools that include the following ones: Brown, Cornell, Columbia, Dartmouth, Penn, Yale, University of Chicago, Vanderbilt, Williams, Yeshiva University honors, Horace Mann, Hotchkiss, Middlesex, Johns Hopkins graduate school, and Bronx Science. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I always respond promptly. I hope to hear from you soon!
