The 13 Best News Sites You Can Trust for Credible Stories

Want the best news sites around? Here are the top-ranked news sites that publish credible content, not fake news stories.

Fake news is a big issue right now. News companies are in the pockets of mega-billionaires. Media bias, inaccurate reporting, and sensationalism are on everyone's mind. We are in an age where we don't trust the people reporting the news.

Despite all this, there are still some trustworthy news sources out there. You just have to know where to look. In this article, we'll list some of the most honest and reliable news sources.

What We Mean When We Say "Trustworthy"

This is going to be a controversial article, no matter which news sites we suggest. Some people will disagree with the ones we choose. Others will be offended that we didn't include their favorite media outlets.

Unfortunately, there's no objective metric of trustworthiness. Most of the sites you'll see listed made their way onto this list because they've developed a solid reputation for unbiased news , and not-politically-motivated reporting.

Yes, you can contest a reputation as it is also in flux always. It can't be easily quantified (though we've cited sources where we can), and people will always have different opinions. That being said, we stand by the assertions we make here. Note that we are presenting these credible news websites in alphabetical order and not ranking by trustworthiness.

What Are AllSides Ratings?

AllSides website homepage

In many of the entries below, we mention AllSides ratings. The ratings are from AllSides , which dedicates itself to exposing bias and providing multiple perspectives on issues. The site determines its ratings in a number of ways—you can check out its methodology for more information.

AllSides is itself a great place to get news, as it clearly labels each story as left-leaning, center, or right-leaning. We highly recommend it when you want to see what different people are saying about the same issue. It's eye-opening and can help you learn to pick out news bias, even on your most trusted news source.

1. Associated Press News

Screenshot of AP News homepage

If you read a lot of news, you'll see the AP credited all over the place. It often reports stories first, and other outlets pick up those stories and run them for their own readers.

AP is a non-profit, has no corporate sponsorship, and is not government-funded. The crowd-sourced bias rating at AllSides is "left-leaning," as of writing. While you'll most often see AP cited in other news outlets, you can get news directly from the source.

bbc

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the largest broadcaster in the world. The British government funds the organization, and so it is not beholden to corporate interests. The BBC has a history of over 90 years with a well-earned reputation for accurate, unbiased reporting.

AllSides classifies it as a center news source—meaning if you want balance, it's one of the unbiased independent news sites . Despite being center, US citizens may find that "center" in the UK is notably to the left of what they might be used to.

C-SPAN's website homepage

Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network (C-SPAN) has been around since 1979. The channel provides unbiased news coverage of the US federal government, US political events, and limited coverage from the governments of the UK, Canada, and Australia.

C-SPAN is a private, non-profit organization that has never failed a single fact check in the past five years from mediabiasfactcheck.com .

4. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism's website homepage

Though it has a focus on politics, the Bureau's stories will likely be of interest to people even outside the British political beat. As a non-profit, independent media organization, it has few ties to groups that might influence its political leanings. The Bureau publishes its stories in conjunction with other outlets—from both sides of the spectrum.

A look at its major investigations does show that many of its stories focus on issues that are generally of more interest to the left. The group prides itself on fact-based reporting, however, and does pull together a lot of data to support its claims.

The Bureau isn't listed on AllSides. But van Zandt, again, calls it among the most unbiased news outlets. Its stated mission is to "hold power to account," and its goal certainly comes through in its journalism. It also aims to drive change through journalism.

5. The Christian Science Monitor

Christain Science Monitor news website homepage

Because it's a news magazine, the format of the Christian Science Monitor is a little different from the other best news sources on this list. It runs fewer stories, but those stories tend to be very in-depth. It was founded in response to the sensationalist press of the early 1900s, and it's maintained a strong reputation over 100 years later, maintaining its independence from mainstream media corporations.

There are two ways you can get news from CSM: through the daily edition (which gives you unlimited access to the site, key daily stories sent each evening via email, along with an explanation of why they're important) or the weekly version (which is also available in print and includes access to the daily edition).

Unfortunately, neither is free. The daily will run you $11/month, and the weekly is $15/month. Before Amazon discontinuing magazine and newspaper subscriptions , you could also grab it on your Kindle. However, the good news is that CSM also has several free newsletters you can subscribe to, including Today's Highlights and several others dedicated to different topics sent out on different days of the week.

6. The Economist

A screenshot of The Economist's homepage

Although AllSides states that while The Economist tends to lean left, it does have a reputation for high-quality reporting. The publication "considers itself the enemy of privilege, pomposity, and predictability."

Throughout its history, the Economist has championed issues on both sides of the political spectrum. Today, it does tend to have a bit more of a left lean. That being said, it's not afraid to align itself with the party it believes best supports its ideals, which focus on free trade and free markets.

One of the unique features of the Economist is the lack of bylines. According to the news outlet's About Us page, "collective voice and personality matter more than the identities of individual journalists."

Screenshot of NPR news homepage

This is likely to be a controversial one, as public broadcasting is strongly associated with liberal political views in the US. However, NPR has a reputation for journalistic excellence. It's invested in continued government funding, but it remains free of corporate bias.

AllSides rates NPR as left-leaning, with a blind survey, third-party data, community feedback, and secondary research supporting the classification. The Pew survey shows that conservatives tend to mistrust NPR, but its journalistic acumen is high. It's known for rejecting sensationalism, issuing corrections when necessary, and fair reporting.

8. ProPublica

ProPublica website home page

If you get your news from NPR, you've probably heard ProPublica mentioned. Like the AP, ProPublica is a non-profit, non-government-funded news organization. The fact that it was the first online news organization to win a Pulitzer Prize also gives it some credence (it's gone on to win several more since then). Similar to NPR, AllSides rates ProPublica as left-leaning.

ProPublica was founded in 2007-2008 with a mission to "expose abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust by government, business, and other institutions" through investigative journalism. This is a smaller organization than some of the others mentioned on this list, but it's absolutely worth checking out. We have a feeling it's going to continue to grow, both in size and reputation, so you should definitely add it to your trusted news outlets list.

Reuters website

Like the AP, other news outlets often cite Reuters—and that's largely because it has a long and solid reputation for good reporting. The organization is owned by Thomson Reuters. This gives it added resistance to corporate influence.

Reuters strives to use a "value-neutral approach" to guard against bias in its reporting (so much so that it has courted controversy, especially after refusing to use the word "terrorist" after the September 11 attacks in New York).

While you may not be as familiar with Reuters as some of the other outlets listed here, it has a long-standing reputation for good journalism. Its Hallmarks of Reuters Journalism is a great resource for anyone reporting the news, and Reuters editors hold their journalists to its tenets.

10. USA Today

Screenshot of USA TODAY's homepage

In 2016, USA Today shared the crown of widest circulation in the US with The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. It's read all over the world and is a major source of news for millions of people every day. The op-eds in USA Today are clearly labeled and present a range of viewpoints (a refreshing change from the opinion pieces in some other publications).

AllSides gives the publication a left-leaning rating, although it notes that there's been some disagreement. The fact that two blind surveys and three recent editorial reviews supported this rating adds weight, however. You might be used to seeing USA Today in front of your hotel room door, but if you're looking for good news, do check the site regularly.

11. The Wall Street Journal

The Wall Street Journal homepage

This is likely to be another controversial inclusion on the list, due to the ownership of WSJ by News Corporation, the mega-media conglomeration helmed by the Murdoch family. Rupert Murdoch has developed a reputation for being ruthlessly conservative and using his considerable media power for political influence. Some of his news outlets also have a deservedly terrible reputation.

The Journal, however, has consistently ranked as highly trusted in the United States, even after its takeover by News Corp. AllSides gives it a strong center rating in its recent blind survey.

It's important to note that the news and opinions section of WSJ has a strictly enforced separation and that op-eds tend to have a very strong right-leaning bias, which many agree with. Despite that, the news (especially financial news ) published by the outlet is of high quality.

FAIR homepage

If you're interested in media bias—beyond finding media that's minimally biased—you should definitely check out FAIR. Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting is a watchdog group that writes about media bias. It publishes a number of remarkably stinging critiques of current news practices.

AllSides gives them a provisional left-leaning rating. FAIR is known for writing articles that critique even the largest media organizations, like The New York Times, CNN, and BBC. It doesn't hold back, and no one is safe from its rhetoric.

13. The Pew Research Center

The Pew Research Center website homepage

Pew Research describes itself as a "nonpartisan fact tank" aiming to inform the public about the current issues and trends shaping the world. Pew Research derives its reporting from data through research and opinion polls. Like several outlets in this article, Pew Research is a non-profit, nonpartisan, and nonadvocacy organization mainly funded by its founding organization, The Pew Charitable Trusts.

According to AllSides, Pew Research is center-leaning, which the community agrees with. Pew Research doesn't publish new articles daily, so a good way to keep up with their reporting is by subscribing to their free newsletter.

Your Most Trusted News Outlets

These news sites have earned themselves reputations for being trustworthy. That said, news, in general, tends to have a negativity bias, which you can counteract by seeking out positive news.

Reporters and editors also have their own biases, so it's impossible to find 100 percent unbiased news—and that probably wouldn't be very fun to read anyway. But, in general, you can trust what you read from these outlets. The key is to read multiple publications that include a few credible news sources from the other side of the fence.

Choose a News Source Committed to Ethical Standards of Reporting

It is important to distinguish between biased reporting and reporting based on unverified facts. Some news sources, such as the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, are often accused of having liberal and conservative biases, respectively.  However, despite these accusations, both publications are committed to maintaining journalistic integrity and ensuring the accuracy of their reporting. Similarly, the Washington Post, NPR, and the BBC are all known for investing significant resources into verifying their sources and ensuring that their reporting is factually accurate before publication.

All of the aforementioned news outlets employ investigative journalists who spend substantial amounts of time researching and reporting on their stories. Moreover, the Washington Post, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal are among the most prestigious winners of Pulitzer Prizes for their reporting.

These news websites and media outlets are widely trusted across the political spectrum as reliable sources of news that have been thoroughly fact-checked. If you encounter a news story from a less reputable source, you can always turn to these established news outlets to confirm whether the story is legitimate.

1. The New York Times

Considered one of the United States’ newspapers of record, the New York Times was founded in 1851 and is one of the world’s most respected journalistic organizations. Its investigative reporting is among the most decorated in America, with recent Pulitzer Prize wins commending its in-depth coverage of Donald Trump's presidency and the Covid-19 pandemic.

The NYT's website includes the longform features you’ll find in its weekly news magazine. It sits behind a paywall, but the newspaper’s innovative multimedia approach has attracted over eight million paid digital subscribers. The NYT has led the way in showing how traditional print outlets can generate revenue away from their long-established channels.

When it launched on June 1, 1980, the Cable News Network, or CNN, became the 1st 24-hour cable news channel in the United States. Since then, it’s become one of the most recognized media organizations on the planet—its 24/7 news coverage being a hotel room staple.

The CNN website is easy to navigate and free to use, though the tailored ad banners can be a little intrusive. The organization’s coverage of certain issues, such as climate change and gun control, has led to conservative commentators claiming the channel has a left-leaning, progressive political bias.

Reuters specializes in breaking finance and business news, though coverage does also include politics, technology, sports, and lifestyle. The website categories allow you to filter news options by topic or region, while its Reuters Investigates section publishes regular special reports from its 2,500-strong squad of journalists. These are based in over 200 locations around the globe.

Unsurprisingly, as a renowned news wire service, news and information on the site are constantly updated in real time. Video news features prominently on the Reuters homepage, and registered users can also customize the homepage news feed based on personal preferences.

4. Wall Street Journal

First published in 1889, the Wall Street Journal is a titan of the US newsstands, renowned for its expert coverage of finance, economics, politics, and business news. It’s a favorite among Republicans for the conservative-leaning political bias often reflected in its editorials. Nevertheless, its in-depth analysis and news reporting are considered to be non-partisan.

The site mirrors the look and feel of the newspaper and has over three million paying subscribers—the only way of accessing it. Neat touches include the one-click option to listen to each article, while its range of newsletters—including morning and evening briefings—remains popular with its readership.

Based in London since it began in 1922, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the world's oldest national broadcaster. Over a century on, the BBC abides by its founding ethos to "inform, educate, and entertain” on its TV, radio, and digital platforms. BBC News Online is the most-read news website on the web, with over a billion annual visits.

As part of the terms of service relating to its citizen-funded license fee model, the BBC is legally required to remain free of political bias in its coverage. This means its high standards of journalism remain a standard bearer for many news organizations around the world. What’s more, UK-based users can enjoy the additional benefit of an ad-free user experience.

National Public Radio (NPR) shares similarities with the BBC in that its roots lie in non-commercial broadcasting. The Washington DC-based media company first aired in 1971, opening with a show about the controversial Vietnam War.

Given its chief focus remains on producing in-depth audio storytelling, the breadth of news content on its website isn’t as extensive as you'll find with the others on this list, but it does include generous coverage of culture and music. It's also the perfect hub from which to browse its directory of award-winning radio shows and podcasts.

7. Google News

Unlike the others on this list, Google News does not produce its own original news content but rather showcases the latest stories from thousands of third-party sources. Just as you'd expect from Google, its automated news aggregation service uses algorithms to determine what stories and sources to feature. This is based on a range of factors—including relevance, source reliability, and popularity.

The site is a breeze to use, with an uncluttered design that you can tailor to your personal preferences, including favored topics, preferred news sources, and news in your area.

8. Fox News

Launched in 1996 by media proprietor Rupert Murdoch, Fox News is a conservative-leaning news agency. Murdoch and founding CEO Roger Ailes always intended for the channel to provide an alternative to the impartiality espoused by America's traditional news channels.

However, the network has attracted criticism for its combative style—it’s often critical of Democrat politicians and liberal concerns. The channel’s distinctive colorful graphics and opinionated hosts, including Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity, also feature on its shouty tabloid-style website.

The Fox News website offers an intuitive online route to its television and radio channels, while its "Trending" section tends to demonstrate the network's noted political bias: former President Donald Trump is frequently featured.

The website of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) features the same wide range of original reporting, analysis, and opinion pieces for which its associated television network is known. A red breaking news ticker along the top of the Homepage recalls the look of the channel that first aired in 1939. Along with politics and US news, its main categories include business, world news, tech, and health.

There’s also a slick in-browser video player that makes it easy to watch NBC live while scrolling down the Homepage. Its “Watch Now” page also allows you to select its various news shows, including Nightly News and Meet the Press.

10. Washington Post

The newspaper that was instrumental in the downfall of President Nixon continues to be renowned for its unwavering commitment to the highest standards of journalism. Founded in 1877, WaPo was acquired by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos for $250m in 2013. The newspaper has since invested heavily in its digital offering, and you'll need a subscription to read most of its online content.

Despite some initial concerns over Bezos' ownership, the newspaper's reputation for accurate journalism remains intact, with an increased emphasis on data-driven reporting and visual storytelling. Its Fact Checker feature was launched in 2007, promising "the truth behind the rhetoric." It aims to hold politicians to account by helping readers better understand the accuracy of their claims.

Stay Ahead of the Curve

Keeping up with the latest news can be a challenge, as each day seems to bring new revelations, controversies, and talking points. To stay informed, many people rely on RSS feeds from news sites that are constantly updated with the latest breaking news. Reuters, which serves as the news source for many news outlets, is an excellent option for this purpose.

In addition to news aggregation sites like Google News, which pull articles from thousands of news sites around the world and can quickly pick up on breaking local stories that have yet to become international news, large news agencies such as the BBC are also a good choice. With reporters in most countries around the world, the BBC is often among the first to report on major headlines.

By relying on these reputable sources for breaking news, readers can ensure that they are receiving accurate and timely information about current events.

Seek Out the Facts

Sometimes, when we seek news, we want factual information rather than editorials or opinion pieces. In those moments, it is best to visit news sites that specialize in straight news reporting or to look for articles from wire services like Reuters. This is because Reuters has an extensive international network of reporters who are often the first to break the news, and they are frequently quoted in other news outlets.

In the past, it was difficult to subscribe to Reuters directly, but now they have their own website, which provides easy access to their factual reporting. One of the hallmarks of Reuters is their commitment to journalistic integrity, including fact-checking before publishing. This makes Reuters a trustworthy source for reliable and accurate news reporting.

Consider the Agenda

While many respected news sites carry the biases of their writers or editors, it is important to have objective news sources to turn to. However, we all tend to gravitate towards opinions that reflect our own, and sometimes we even seek out news that challenges our viewpoints. It's not necessary to avoid sites with perceived slants, as long as we are aware of them.

For example, The Wall Street Journal is generally believed to have a conservative slant, while Fox News features fiery personalities that often reflect the right-wing opinions of its viewers. In contrast, CNN and NBC feature commentators perceived to have a more centrist or progressive bend. These sites can be helpful for confirming or challenging our opinions, as long as we are cognizant of any biases that may exist.

Despite being perceived as leaning one way or the other politically, surveys show that the major TV news outlets are mostly considered to be trusted news sources by the majority of Americans.

Seek News From Various Sources

The truth is, there's no such thing as a completely unbiased news story. The prejudices of the journalist and the news outlet can influence everything from the choice of words to the decision about what counts as newsworthy. So, if you want to get a balanced picture of what's going on in the world, and you don't want someone else deciding what stories you should be reading, the best approach is to treat news as a smorgasbord.

Online news aggregation sites like Google News share articles from multiple news outlets around the world, using algorithms instead of human curation. You can even tweak the settings to only see specific types of news or focus on specific geographic areas. This way, you'll be able to find out about news worldwide instead of having some stories hidden from your view. While you'll still be reading articles written by humans, which may contain some degree of bias, you'll be sampling many different takes on the same matter instead of relying on a single slant.

See What the Rest of the World is Saying

Turning to another country for US news may seem counterintuitive, but there’s a potential argument for making international outlets one of your go-to news sources.

In the face of so much bias and slant, many Americans have started to get their news from international news outlets. The British BBC has become viewed as one of the most trusted and objective news outlets available.  With regular American content from both US and international reporters, it can be an informative and often eye-opening place to turn for US and global coverage.

International news outlets can provide a more sober perspective by removing themselves from the emotions, drama, and media circus stateside. Additionally, reading about the candidates' foreign policy issues and other factors that affect the larger world can be done on international news sites.

After publishing an article critical of Israel, Columbia Law Review’s website is shut down by board

NEW YORK (AP) — Student editors at the Columbia Law Review say they were pressured by the journal’s board of directors to halt publication of an academic article written by a Palestinian human rights lawyer that accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and upholding an apartheid regime.

When the editors refused the request and published the piece Monday morning, the board — made up of faculty and alumni from Columbia University’s law school — shut down the law review’s website entirely. It remained offline Tuesday evening, a static homepage informing visitors the domain “is under maintenance.”

The episode at one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious legal journals marks the latest flashpoint in an ongoing debate about academic speech that has deeply divided students, staff and college administrators since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

Several editors at the Columbia Law Review described the board’s intervention as an unprecedented breach of editorial independence at the periodical, which is run by students at Columbia Law School. The board of directors oversees the nonprofit’s finances but has historically played no role in selecting pieces.

In a letter sent to student editors Tuesday and shared with The Associated Press, the board of directors said it was concerned that the article, titled “Nakba as a Legal Concept,” had not gone through the “usual processes of review or selection for articles at the Law Review, and in particular that a number of student editors had been unaware of its existence.”

“In order to preserve the status quo and provide student editors some window of opportunity to review the piece, as well as provide time for the Law Review to determine how to proceed, we temporarily suspended the website,” the letter continued.

Those involved in soliciting and editing the piece said they had followed a rigorous review process, even as they acknowledged taking steps to forestall expected blowback by limiting the number of students aware of the article.

In the piece, Rabea Eghbariah, a Harvard doctoral candidate, accuses Israel of a litany of “crimes against humanity,” arguing for a new legal framework to “encapsulate the ongoing structure of subjugation in Palestine and derive a legal formulation of the Palestinian condition.”

Eghbariah said in a text message that the suspension of the law journal’s website should be seen as “a microcosm of a broader authoritarian repression taking place across U.S. campuses.”

Editors said they voted overwhelmingly in December to commission a piece on Palestinian legal issues, then formed a smaller committee — open to all of the publication’s editorial leadership — that ultimately accepted Eghbariah’s article. He had submitted an earlier version of the article to the Harvard Law Review, which the publication later elected not to publish amid internal backlash, according to a report in The Intercept .

Anticipating similar controversy and worried about a leak of the draft, the committee of editors working on the article did not upload it to a server that is visible to the broader membership of the law journal and to some administrators. The piece was not shared until Sunday with the full staff of the Columbia Law Review — something that editorial staffers said was not uncommon.

“We’ve never circulated a particular article in advance,” said Sohum Pal, an articles editor at the publication. “So the idea that this is all over a process concern is a total lie. It’s very transparently content based.”

In their letter to students, the board of directors said student editors who didn’t work on the piece should have been given an opportunity to read it and raise concerns.

“Whatever your views of this piece, it will clearly be controversial and potentially have an impact on all associated with the Review,” they wrote.

Those involved in the publishing of the article said they heard from a small group of students over the weekend who expressed concerns about threats to their careers and safety if it were to be published.

Some alluded to trucks that circled Columbia and other campuses following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel, labeling students as antisemites for their past or current affiliation with groups seen as hostile to Israel.

The letter from the board also suggested that a statement be appended to the piece stating the article had not been subject to a standard review process or made available for all student editors to read ahead of time.

Erika Lopez, an editor who worked on the piece, said many students were adamantly opposed to the idea, calling it “completely false to imply that we didn’t follow the standard process.”

She said student editors had spoken regularly since they began receiving pushback from the board on Sunday and remained firmly in support of the piece.

When they learned the website had been shuttered Monday morning, they quickly uploaded Eghbariah’s article to a publicly accessible website . It has since spread widely across social media.

“It’s really ironic that this piece probably got more attention than anything we normally published,” Lopez added, “even after they nuked the website.”

The Best Home Printers, Based On Hours Of Rigorous Testing

We were promised a paperless world, but it isn’t here yet; we still need to print, copy and scan documents while we are working from home, doing schoolwork and printing out cute cat pictures. You may not use it as much as you used to, but you still need one of the best home printers to make sure your documents and photos look sharp. After thoroughly testing 11 models across different printer types and price ranges, I chose the HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e as the best home printer overall.

The best home printers produce clear and crisp pages without splotching.

All of these printers integrate seamlessly into home networks and can be easily used from laptops, tablets and smartphones. Because the home printer market is a vast landscape that spans both inkjet and laser print technologies, I spent weeks testing 10 models to narrow down the competition. From value picks like the HP Deskjet 4155e to the best home office printer you can buy, the Brother MFC-J5855DW , these are the best home printers, based on my results.

  • Best Home Printer Overall: HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e
  • Best Value Home Printer: HP Deskjet 4155e
  • Best Laser Home Printer: Canon ImageClass MF462dw
  • Best Home Office Printer: Brother MFC-J5855DW
  • Best Mid-Range Home Printer: HP LaserJet MFP M140we

Best Home Printer Overall

Speedy, versatile all-in-one inkjet, hp officejet pro 9125e.

Printer type: Inkjet | Features: Print/Copy/Scan/Fax | Rated print speed: 22 ppm (black) / 18 ppm (color) | Duty cycle: Up to 25,000 pages | Print resolution: Up to 4,800 x 1,200 dpi | Scan resolution: 1,200 x 1,200 dpi | Total paper tray capacity: 250 sheets | Ink: 4 cartridges

  • Homes and small offices
  • Rapid printing, scanning and copying
  • Anyone who thinks most office printers look ugly
  • You don’t print enough to get value from the ink subscription
  • You prioritize photo printing

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e is my top pick for the home: It can quickly print, scan, copy and even fax, if needed. It’s a great do-it-all package that should be able to handle all of your home and home office printer needs, from copying permission slips to printing family photos.

The printer is easy to set up. Just plug it in and follow the online guide, which takes you through installing the four ink cartridges, connecting it to your Wi-Fi and printing a test page that the printer itself scans to check that everything is working. This setup guide also links you to the HP Smart app , available for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. This simple app allows you to print, scan and copy documents over any internet connection. It also allows you to scan a document and send it straight to someone over email or to upload scans to Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive or HP’s own Scan Cloud service.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e prints with great color accuracy and detailing.

The OfficeJet Pro 9125e also offers ethernet and USB connections, and the small but flexible 2.7-inch touchscreen provides easy access to these features on the device itself. You can also create shortcuts on the display, which is very useful for common tasks.

It’s a fairly large printer, occupying a sizeable 17 by 20 inches when the output tray is extended. It was also the fastest inkjet printer I tested, finishing a 10-page sample document in just 45 seconds. Overall, the print quality was excellent. Graphics looked crisp and vibrant, and the text appeared dark and uniform, though with just a trace of splotchiness on the default “Normal” quality setting. That vanished when I used the “Best” quality setting, but that does slow printing down: My test document took just under two minutes on that setting.

This printer’s one weakness lies with its photo printing. It produced smooth, passable images that I’d deem good enough for home projects, but not of the same caliber as others I tested. If you plan on printing a lot of photos, I’d suggest considering a dedicated photo printer.

The test page is in the scanner and the test copy is in the tray. Note the color accuracy.

Like most printers, the real cost is in the consumables, i.e., the ink it uses to print. A replacement set of four EcoMore ink cartridges sells for about $238: $79.99 for the large black and $52.99 each for the cyan, magenta and yellow. That’s more than the printer itself. HP claims the black will print 2,500 pages, while the color cartridges are good for 1,650 pages. That’s about 3 cents per black page and about 9 cents per color page.

You can bring those costs down by subscribing to HP’s Instant Ink program , which automatically ships new cartridges to you when the printer detects it’s close to running out. The program’s pricing ranges from 99 cents to $25 per month, depending on how many pages you print, and you get a free six-month trial so you can test the subscription waters. You must sign up for that trial within the first seven days of installing the printer, and doing so requires a credit card. As with many such trials, you’ll need to cancel to avoid getting billed once it expires. You also need to register for HP+ (at no charge) to unlock certain benefits, including a second year of warranty coverage.

HP also offers a similar model (the HP OfficeJet 9010e) on its All-In subscription plan , where a higher monthly fee includes the printer itself and a limited ink subscription.

The HP OfficeJet 9125e is a superb home printer that combines stylish looks with fast, high-quality printing. In a perfect world, it would support a second paper source and print better photos, but otherwise it’s easy to recommend as a standout in a sea of printer choices.

Best Value Home Printer

Inexpensive and compact, with an adf, hp deskjet 4155e.

Printer type: Inkjet | Features: Print/Copy/Scan/Mobile fax | Rated print speed: 8.5 ppm (black) / 5.5 ppm (color) | Duty cycle: Up to 1,000 pages | Print resolution: Up to 4,800 x 1,200 dpi | Scan resolution: 1,200 x 1,200 dpi | Total paper tray capacity: 60 sheets | Ink: 2 cartridges

  • Spending less up front
  • Gaining the convenience of an automatic document feeder
  • Easy printing and faxing via the companion app
  • You frequently switch between different paper sizes or have print jobs that exceed the puny 60-page input tray
  • You want automatic double-sided printing

How good can a $100 all-in-one printer possibly be? In the case of HP’s DeskJet 4155e, surprisingly good. It looks and functions like something pricier, starting with its 35-sheet ADF—a feature that’s uncommon at this price (although, the similarly priced Brother MFC-J1010DW has an ADF as well). Even better, it prints well on copy paper, though in my tests this model proved it was no speed demon.

The HP DeskJet 4155e is a little more challenging to set up than its larger cousin. It includes a terse, incomplete setup guide. Curiously, the guide doesn’t mention how to install ink cartridges; for that, you have to look at the separate reference guide. This printer uses a single black and a single color cartridge, behind a deeply recessed access panel I found tricky to open.

The HP DeskJet 4155e control panel is easily accessible and intuitive.

Continuing the setup was smooth sailing thanks to HP Smart, a novice-friendly mobile app that handles connecting to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (for setup). The app also puts a lot of the printer’s core functions at your fingertips with a clear, visual interface—a welcome find, considering the printer has just a single-line monochrome display and buttons to navigate its functions and settings. The app also enables faxing a scanned document, something the printer can’t do directly. Another: super-handy Shortcuts, like “scan to Google Drive” and “print, email, and save.”

Though admirably compact at 13.1 x 16.9 x 7.9 inches, the HP DeskJet 4155e needs several inches of front and rear clearance to accommodate its input and output trays. The input tray tilts out from the back and holds just 60 sheets, so plan on reloading fairly regularly. It’s also kind of a pain, forcing you to lean way over the printer to see what you’re doing (the ADF partially obstructs the view). The input tray’s sliding paper guide is challenging, too—it’s both hard to see and hard to reach. If you often switch among paper, envelopes, photos and the like, you might prefer a printer with a front-loading paper tray, like the Brother MFC-J1010DW.

The HP DeskJet 4155e has a basic control panel, with the aforementioned small status LCD flanked by seven buttons. On the right, press the color button (offset by an array of colors) or the monochrome button to copy a document; press multiple times to increase the number of copies. The left buttons are less intuitive. One toggles wireless on and off, another resumes print jobs. And the “i” button? Well, you’d think pressing “i” would show information on the LCD, but it actually prints an information page.

It took the HP DeskJet 4155e nearly two minutes to print our ten-page sample document, making it the slowest model tested. Its text was dark and sharp, though, the best of the value contenders. I was surprised the printer had more pep when printing photos, where it output my test images quickly and produced good overall results. In my test document, graphics and images exhibited vibrant color, but appeared grainy. Unsurprisingly, switching to the “best” print quality setting yields vastly improved results, though doing so makes an already slow printer even slower.

The HP DeskJet 4155e comes with a 6-month HP Instant Ink trial so you can decide if an ink subscription works for you. You must sign up for that trial within the first seven days of installing the printer, and doing so requires a credit card. As with many such trials, you’ll need to cancel to avoid getting billed once it expires. You also need to register for HP+ to unlock certain printer benefits, including a second year of warranty coverage, but there’s no charge for that. If the subscription isn’t a good fit, a standard dual-cartridge replacement set would cost you about $32; a high-yield set about $53. That translates to a relatively high cost-per-page of around 14 cents (with a standard black cartridge yielding 120 pages, a standard color 100). A subscription has the potential to reduce those costs.

While not perfect, the HP DeskJet 4155e handles basic printing, scanning and copying chores very well, at a low up-front cost and with better quality than competing models. And it has the best companion app of any home printer manufacturer (and the same app as the HP OfficeJet 9015e).

Best Laser Home Printer

Lightning-fast output, superb text, canon imageclass mf462dw.

Printer type: Laser | Features: Print/Copy/Scan/Fax | Rated print speed: 34 ppm (black) | Monthly duty cycle: Up to 4,000 pages | Print resolution: Up to 1,200 x 1,200 dpi | Scan resolution: 600 x 600 dpi | Total paper tray capacity: 350 sheets | Ink: Toner cartridge

  • Large, fast print jobs
  • Easily printing envelopes and labels
  • Duplex printing and scanning
  • You need to print in color
  • You don’t have a lot of desk space

With its oversize touchscreen, dual input trays and sizable footprint, the Canon ImageClass MF462dw looks like something you’d find in a fancy office. Fortunately, it’s priced to fit home budgets (on sale, its price dips to $250 or less). I tested the previous model, the ImageClass MF452dw, which was the fastest printer I tested, and it aced my test document, producing razor-sharp text and smooth, well-balanced images.

Once I got this big, heavy (34-pound) machine situated and removed all the packing tape (there was an unusually large amount of packing tape), the printer was ready to use. The toner cartridge came installed and ready to use—something I’ve never seen in a laser printer—and its roomy, 5-inch touchscreen made it easy to get connected to the Wi-Fi network and to navigate the print, copy, scan and fax functions. However, Canon’s only desktop software setup instruction was a curt, “Download the desktop software.”

The Canon ImageClass MF452dw offers a large, color touchscreen display.

There’s very little this printer doesn’t do. Aside from its rapid print speeds, its standout features include a 250-sheet input tray and 100-sheet multipurpose tray (for things like envelopes and labels). You can scan documents directly to the cloud service of your choice. If you really want to get into volume printing, you can add an optional third 550-sheet tray to the bottom of the printer, an accessory that reflects this model’s intended office use.

The printer includes a standard toner cartridge that should last for about 3,100 pages. A standard replacement costs about $100, while Canon’s high-yield cartridge (good for nearly 10,000 pages) costs around $225. To put that in some perspective, a typical inkjet might be good for only a couple hundred pages before you need new ink cartridges. Laser printer toner doesn’t dry out the way ink does. Plus, you don’t have to worry about a print head getting clogged up, a common issue with inkjet printers. This is why I often champion laser printers to home users who don’t print very often; they present fewer hassles and are cheaper to operate over the long haul.

Best Home Office Printer

A beast for tabloid pages, brother mfc-j5855dw.

Printer type: Inkjet | Features: Print/Copy/Scan/Fax | Rated print speed: 30 ppm (black and color) | Monthly duty cycle: Up to 3,500 pages | Print resolution: Up to 4,800 x 1,200 dpi | Scan resolution: Up to 1,200 x 1,200   dpi | Total paper tray capacity: 250 sheets | Output: 4-color cartridge

  • Large-format document printing
  • Long-lasting ink supply
  • Novice users who normally struggle with setup
  • You don’t need to print 11 x 17-inch pages

The Brother MFC-J5855DW is an absolute beast of a printer, both in terms of physical size and print prowess. Its desk-swallowing footprint accommodates a 250-sheet paper tray that can hold media up to 11 x 17 inches. There’s also a bypass tray for feeding photo paper and envelopes, without having to swap out your main paper supply.

This machine was refreshingly easy to set up, with little packaging to remove and easy-to-install ink cartridges. A spacious touchscreen interface made quick work of the initial configuration, and I liked the detailed instruction manual, which included links and QR codes to set up videos online.

The Brother was one of the fastest inkjet printers I tested, at least for documents. Photos took longer to print and appeared a bit grainy, but they exhibited good color quality overall. In our test document, text looked a touch soft and overly dark, but images and graphics were solid overall. Brother’s mobile app puts print, scan and copy controls at your fingertips, but the desktop software is dated and limited, offering just basic scan tools.

Brother promises that the four included “Inkvestment” cartridges can last you up to one year (based on 300 pages per month). A replacement set costs about $100. That still translates to an extremely low cost per page, around 1 cent per monochrome page and 5 cents per color, making this a great fit for small offices that need to print big on a budget.

Best Mid-Range Home Printer

An under-$200 option for small home offices, hp laserjet mfp m140we.

Printer type:  Laser  | Features:  Print/Copy/Scan | Rated print speed:  21 ppm (black) | Duty cycle:  Up to 8,000 pages  | Print resolution:  Up to 600 x 600 dpi  | Scan resolution: 600 dpi | Total paper tray capacity:  150 sheets  | Ink:  1 cartridge

  • Smaller home office spaces
  • Budget-minded shoppers who want a larger tray capacity
  • Speedy printing
  • You want to print in color
  • You need automatic double-sided printing

The HP LaserJet MFP M140we is an extremely good multifunction printer that just missed earning the best home laser printer crown. It’s compact, affordable and easy to use, with an impressive two-year warranty if you sign up for HP+. Dubbed the “world’s smallest laser in its class” by HP, it takes up only a 14.2- by 10.4- by 13.7-inch space on your desk, making it nearly 18% smaller than the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e.

Although it’s compact, it doesn’t skimp on printing speed. The M140we can churn out 21 pages per minute, so you don’t need to wait long for your documents. Plus, it has more than double the tray capacity of the HP Deskjet 4155e—no more refilling the tray in between larger jobs. And when it comes to setup, HP’s companion app simplifies the process and provides a useful roster of functions.

The biggest downsides: The M140we doesn’t print in color, and during testing print quality was just average, with text that looked a little light and some noticeable banding in grayscale images.

The Best Hiking Boots Of 2024, Based On Miles Of Trail Testing

Everything announced at wwdc 2024: ‘apple intelligence’ and more, other home printers tested.

The five standout printers here left six models by the wayside, though all of them have points in their favor. Here’s a look at the ones that didn’t make the cut—but might still be worthy of your consideration.

Brother MFC-J1010DW ($100 at Amazon): The second-best-value printer in the group, Brother’s versatile multifunction ink-jet includes an ADF and supports automatic duplex printing, but it suffers from complex setup and operation. Plus, although it was one of the quickest printers, text looked a bit soft and overly dark. It has a low cost, though, and Brother’s optional ink subscription can make operating costs equally affordable.

Canon Pixma MG3620 ($60 at Amazon): Available in black, white or a striking red, Canon’s Pixma is compact and also very affordable. Surprisingly, it can do automatic duplexing, though the lack of an ADF means you can scan and copy just one page at a time. Also, its text output lacked sharpness; it was among the worst in the group. Sample photos popped out quickly, with colors that popped but seemed a little oversaturated in places.

Epson EcoTank ET-2800 ($200 at Amazon): An affordable ink tank printer that requires time and patience to set up, the ET-2800 impressed me with its low operating costs and infuriated me with its confusing mobile app setup, its control panel and “paper type mismatch” errors when switching to photo paper. And while those photos looked pleasing, they took forever to print. Put simply, this is a competent but complicated all-in-one with large ink tanks.

Epson WorkForce Pro WF-2960 ($120 at Amazon): If judged on the heinous setup process alone, this is the only printer in the group I’d recommend avoiding. Assuming you’re able (and willing) to get past all that, the WorkForce Pro is a well-rounded all-in-one with automatic duplexing, an ADF, a small but useful touchscreen and Epson’s decent mobile app. Overall print quality ranged between okay (text was light and not always solid) and very good (graphics had good color, photos were sharp but lacked vibrancy); the printer itself is affordable and reasonably cheap to operate.

Epson Workforce WF-2960 Wireless All-in-One Printer

HP Smart Tank 7301 ($420 at Amazon): The Smart Tank 7301 is expensive (it lists for $460 but is almost always on sale for under $400, hence its inclusion in this group), but its large ink tanks and inexpensive refills promise to save you money over the long term. Unlike other HPs here, this one was a pain to set up, and its warranty covers just one year, not two. But it was among the fastest inkjet models, and it produced the best-looking text, graphics and photos of any inkjet printer tested here.

How I Tested The Best Home Printers

My criteria.

Since these printers are intended for home use, I capped the retail price at $400. Since prices fluctuate, some of these printers have an MSRP above $400 when there are no retail discounts in play.

While print speed and quality are obviously key factors in evaluating any printer, I also focused on real-world considerations like ease of setup, ease of use (Does it have a convenient control panel? What software does it include?) and overall versatility (Can it copy, scan or fax as well? Does it do automatic two-sided printing?). Tech-challenged users, take note: A lot of these models are a pain to set up. I also considered the cost of replacement ink.

Testing Process

I tested all the printers via a Wi-Fi connection to a Windows 11 PC, at the default print quality settings using 20-pound copy paper. To gauge speed, I clocked how long it took each printer to output a ten-page PDF document containing a mixture of text, graphics and photos—from the time I pressed “print” to the time the last page finished. I examined the printed pages closely, looking at the text’s weight and sharpness and images and graphics’ clarity and color.

Unsurprisingly, the monochrome laser printers were the fastest overall, with the Canon ImageClass MF452dw cranking out the document in just 22 seconds. The slowest laser, Brother’s HL-L2305w , was still plenty fast at 39 seconds.

Most of the inkjet printers completed the PDF test in anywhere from one to two minutes, which I suspect will satisfy the majority of home users’ daily use. While there’s not enough variance to warrant much debate over speed, the minor speed differences among the printers might add up if you’re printing a lengthy, 100-page document, for example. For the record, the HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e won the day with an impressive 45-second print time. By comparison, our best value home printer, the HP DeskJet 4155e printed that same document in 1 minute, 53 seconds—more than twice the time required by the HP OfficeJet 9015e.

For the eight color printers I tested, I ran three 4 x 6-inch test photos on standard glossy photo paper. I found these printers output photos of similar quality, with good (if not nuanced) color reproduction and clarity. Unlike the PDF, which I printed from a PC, I sent the photos to each printer via their respective companion mobile app, an obvious decision given the prevalence of smartphone photography.

My Expertise

As a writer with over 30 years’ experience covering consumer technology, I’ve used or tested every kind of printer imaginable. My work has appeared everywhere from CNET to Yahoo , and I’m the author of the weekly newsletter Deal Secrets , which shares great bargains and unique ways to save money. My expertise there helped to inform this roundup, in which I paid close attention to each printer’s cost of consumables. (If the printer itself is cheap but the ink will put you in the poorhouse, that’s no good.)

This story was written in 2023 and updated in February 2024 by Richard Baguley , a veteran technology writer who has been reviewing tech since the early 1990s. He has tested hundreds of scanners, printers and other related products.

People Are Obsessed With Barry Keoghan’s Appearance In Sabrina Carpenter’s Iconic New Music Video

“casting your boyfriend in a song about begging guys not to embarrass you is BOLDDD.”

Leyla Mohammed

BuzzFeed Staff

Sabrina Carpenter has released the music video for her new single “Please Please Please” — and it stars none other than her boyfriend, Barry Keoghan !

As you might know, the pair  supposedly  started seeing each other in December, shortly after Barry, 31, ended things with his girlfriend Alyson Sandro, and Sabrina, 25,  apparently split  from Shawn Mendes .

Ever since Sabrina and Barry were first linked, they’ve seemingly remained pretty obsessed with each other.

And now, the pair have kicked things up a notch with Barry starring as the love interest in Sabrina’s new music video , which begins with her locking eyes with him as she’s released from jail while he’s dragged in.

Throughout the music video, directed by Bardia Zeinali, Barry repeatedly gets arrested for a series of incidents — from bank robberies to brutal fights. Sabrina begs him not to get involved with the wrong crowd, looking into his eyes as she sings the chorus: “Please, please, please don't prove I’m right.”

Needless to say, fans literally went wild over Sabrina and Barry essentially hard-launching their relationship with a whole Bonnie and Clyde-esque music video.

“casting your boyfriend in a song about begging guys not to embarrass you is BOLDDD but i love their chemistry so much,” one comment on YouTube read.
