Read the following sentences carefully:

  • I play tennis every day.
  • We played a match yesterday.
  • They will play with us tomorrow.

In sentence 1, the verb play refers to present time. In sentence 2, the verb played refers to past time. In sentence 3, the verb will play refers to future time. Thus verb may refer to

  • Present Time
  • Past Time or
  • Future Time.

Since three main time divisions are: present, past and future, they may be represented by three main blocks of tenses:

  • The Present Tense
  • The Past Tense
  • The Future Tense

Depending on the interest and attitude of the speaker indicated by them, tenses are divided as

  • indefinite or simple,
  • continuous or progressive,
  • perfect, and
  • perfect continuous.

This classification takes into account both form and function. These four sub-divisions of each tense clearly indicate the stage of action: e.g.

  • The Simple form simply states am action. It does not say anything about the completion of the action—whether it is complete or not.
  • The Continuous form indicates that the action is in progress. It is still going on.
  • The Perfect form indicates that the action has been completed.
  • The Perfect Continuous form shows that the action which began sometime before, is still in progress.

Thus, the tense of a verb shows not only the time of an action or event, but also the state of an action. In other words, we may say that tense is the form of a verb which shows the time at which an event occurs and the degree of completeness / incompleteness of the event. Read the following sentences:

  • I write a letter (Simple Present)
  • I am writing a letter. (Present Continuous)
  • I have written a letter. (Present Perfect)
  • I have been writing a letter since 7 a.m. (Present Perfect Continuous)

The verbs in the above sentences refer to present time. Therefore, these sentences are in the present tense. The Past Tense also has the following four forms:

1. I wrote a letter yesterday. (Simple Past) 2. I was writing a letter at that moment. (Past Continuous) 3. I had written before you came. (Past Perfect) 4. I had been writing letters all day yesterday. (Past Perfect Continuous)

Similarly, the Future Tense has the following four forms:

  • I shall write to you tomorrow. (Simple Future)
  • I shall be writing on reaching home. (Future Continuous)
  • I shall have written a letter by evening. (Future Perfect Tense)
  • I shall have been writing for an hour before you arrive. (Future Perfect Continuous)

Now study, the following tense chart giving the forms of the verb ‘write’:

TENSE CHART

A conditional sentence has two parts—the main clause and the conditional clause (if—clause). There are three types of conditions: Type I : Possible — relating to future. Type II : Probable or Hypothetical —unfulfilled condition of the Present. Type III : Impossible or Imaginary — unfulfilled condition of the Past. The tenses of verbs in the two clauses follow this pattern.

The tenses of verbs in the two clauses follow this pattern.

Reading with Insight

1. ‘Have you come back?’ said the woman. ‘I thought that no one had come back.’ Does this statement give some clue about the story? If yes, what is it?

This statement gives us a hint that both the woman and the narrator know each other. The narrative revolves around a girl trying to find her mother’s ancient possessions with an adult lady. This girl’s mother knew about an upcoming war and so had gradually moved all her valuable belongings to the residence of her acquaintance, Mrs. Dorling. As her mother had expired during the war, the woman Mrs. Dorling did not expect anyone to come afterwards and claim the precious belongings. When the girl came to collect them, she was shocked. The given statement shows that the lady is selfish and does not want to share the antiques that do not even belong to her. She doesn’t even recognize the girl as her past acquaintance and refuses to even let her inside her home.

2. The story is divided into pre-War and post-War times. What hardships do you think the girl underwent during these times?

The account “The Address” is divided into post-war and pre-war times. The girl belonged to a rich family. The girl’s family had a lot of valuable things. There is clear evidence of the difficulties which the storyteller had to experience in these times. During the pre-war times, the girl lived in another place distant from her mother and visited her very rarely. During those times, her mother was worried that her precious things would be lost in the war. They were worried that they would have to leave the house. The girl was in a small hired house with its shutters overlaid with blackout paper. She was unable to see anything outside and the threat of death was also upon them. However, during the post-war period, everything returned to normalcy. The girl could open the shutters of her room and look outside without worrying about anything. She had a powerful urge to look at her mother’s properties and so also visited Mrs. Dorlings.

3. Why did the narrator of the story want to forget the address?

The narrator desired to forget the address as it prompted her to remember the tender remembrances of her mother, their home and valuable belongings, and her earlier life before the war, which she could never have back. She, therefore, decided to forget the address and move on.

4. ‘The Address’ is a story of human predicament that follows war. Comment.

College instructor put on blast for accusing students of using ChatGPT on final assignments

Texas A&M University–Commerce said it is investigating after a screenshot of an instructor's email — in which he accused students of having used artificial intelligence on their final assignments — went viral on Reddit.

Jared Mumm, an instructor in the agricultural sciences and natural resources department, reportedly told students that they would be receiving an “X” in the course after he used "Chat GTP" (referring to the AI chatbot actually known as ChatGPT ) to determine whether they’d used the software to write their final assignments. He said that he tested each paper twice and that the bot claimed to have written every single final assignment.

“I copy and paste your responses in [ChatGPT] and [it] will tell me if the program generated the content,” according to the email, a copy of which NBC News has reviewed. Rolling Stone first reported the story.

Attempts to reach Mumm by email, LinkedIn and phone were unsuccessful Wednesday. A university spokesperson confirmed Mumm sent the email.

The Rayburn Student Center at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

The screenshot was shared Monday in the subreddit r/ChatGPT, a community made up of 1.6 million users. Many blasted him, and others came to his defense, noting that AI is still a very new tool. The discussion reignited debate around the impact chatbots could have on education.

After its viral launch in December , ChatGPT was lauded online by some as a dramatic step forward for artificial intelligence and   the potential future of web search. But with such praise also came concern about its potential use in academic settings . In January, the New York City Education Department announced a ban on ChatGPT  from its schools’ devices and networks, citing the potential for increased student cheating.

A university spokesperson rebutted parts of the Reddit post , which claimed “Texas A&M commerce professor fails entire class of seniors blocking them from graduating- claiming they all use ‘Chat GTP’”

No students flunked or were prevented from graduating because of the issue, the spokesperson said.

"Dr. Jared Mumm, the class professor, is working individually with students regarding their last written assignments," the university said in its statement. "Some students received a temporary grade of ‘X’—which indicates ‘incomplete’—to allow the professor and students time to determine whether AI was used to write their assignments and, if so, at what level."

The spokesperson said that since the email was posted on Reddit, "several students have been exonerated and their grades have been issued, while one student has come forward admitting his use of Chat GTP in the course. Several other students have opted to complete a new writing assignment made available to them by Dr. Mumm."

The Reddit post was shared by a user named DearKick, who claimed to have obtained the email from their fiancé, a student in the class.

Hundreds of people responded in the comments.

A user suggested that there "be an AI introductory class that is mandatory for teachers and everyone else to understand the biases of AI and how it functions." Another took the criticism a step further and suggested the instructor should face disciplinary action from the university.

“I know several university lecturers that are actively embracing the reality of ChatGPT and other AI and are looking at how to increase the learning potential that can be gained while finding better ways of analysing students skills and capabilities,” wrote another user. “This all reminds me of the time we were told that calculators would never be allowed in classrooms and, god forbid, in exams, only to be proved wrong the following year.”

AI technology is already being used to help detect plagiarism. Many students have long used computer-assisted writing tools, such as Grammarly or Google Docs’ Smart Compose. Platforms like Grammarly and Chegg also offer plagiarism-checking tools.

In April, Turnitin, a plagiarism detection service, announced it will activate its AI writing detection capabilities to "help educators and academic institutions identify AI-generated text in student-written submissions."

The Texas A&M University–Commerce spokesperson said the school will work to "develop policies to address the use or misuse of AI technology in the classroom." Officials also plan to use AI detection tools.

"The use of AI in coursework is a rapidly changing issue that confronts all learning institutions," the spokesperson said.
