An Institute for Urban Agriculture: Architecture, Ecology and Urban Habitat

Journal title, journal issn, volume title.

Humankind has lived on earth for a geologically brief time. Our species has proven a remarkable ability to adapt to our environment through the development and use of tools and technology. Little evidence suggests when our need to tame nature took hold in our collective cultural consciousness, yet throughout western history, human needs and activities have been perceived as separate from the natural world. We stand at the beginning of a new millennium, aware of the cycles which govern the flows of life on our planet, yet far from understanding the specifics of how they work.

This building, an Institute for Urban Agriculture, seeks to challenge that notion of separation. The design expresses architecturally the ways in which the technological systems and organic systems work together to sustain the mission of the Institute. Through every aspect of the building design, the perceived separation of those systems is woven together to express an holistic view of the building as a fully integrated system. Human intervention is a necessary part of a healthy urban ecosystem, and positive relationships with the natural world contribute to the qualities of human health. Inspired by careful observation and experience of the surrounding urban landscape, this design recognizes those interactions and builds upon their social, ecological and economic values. Architecture becomes the medium for communicating transformed ideas about our relationships with the natural world to the building inhabitants and to the public at large.

Excerpt: ‘ Agriculture Research Center, Raas Baalbeck, Beqaa, Lebanon ’ is an architecture thesis by Sara Chamass from the Faculty of Architecture – Design & Built Environment – Beirut Arab University (BAU), that seeks to preserve the important site location and its historical significance while developing innovative technologies and aesthetically pleasing designs. The project showcases the effective use of contemporary building methods to produce a force that offers the user a unique experience in a simple yet appealing architectural form within a historical context.

Introduction: The goal of the project is to preserve the important site location and its historical significance while developing innovative technologies and aesthetically pleasing designs. The combination of the old historical context and contemporary design here highlights the challenge. The idea is to employ modern building techniques to create a power that gives the user a unique experience in a simple yet appealing architectural form. The mountains served as the primary inspiration for the concept, which reflects the surroundings in the project. The project’s beginning and ending are marked in the site’s roots, so it can never be relocated.

Site Context

Agriculture Research Center, Raas Baalbeck, Beqaa, Lebanon | Architecture Thesis

The site location is in Ras Baalbek, Bekaa, Lebanon, close to Hermel (10 km) and the Al-Assi River (7 km). The historic and abandoned watermills define the location. The project’s primary objectives are to establish a memorial site in a unique way and raise awareness of it among the next generation. They will focus more on the context-specific culture that is derived from the water and agricultural resources by proposing an agriculture research center.

Agriculture Research Center, Raas Baalbeck, Beqaa, Lebanon | Architecture Thesis

Two primary purposes will be served by the water mills on the property.

1- To revitalise the outdated water mills in order to provide the project with hydroelectricity. This will support the project in a sustainable manner.

2- To design an alternative method of directing water within the structure in order to conduct testing. The water plant centres in the area will benefit from this process.

Design Process

architectural thesis on agriculture

The concept behind the project is to integrate it with the surrounding environment and the surrounding land. The implementation of this project in the centre of the region will make it special. The surface has been sliced by a series of lines that mimic a spatial equaliser in order to direct light into the space, creating a pattern of ribbons that establish their roots in the earth.

Agriculture Research Center, Raas Baalbeck, Beqaa, Lebanon | Architecture Thesis

Natural and artificial boundaries are blurred by these roots. Fluid spaces are created by these ribbons (or strips). The intricate relationship between the cultivated fields’ interior and exterior is translated into the project’s form, which consists of a series of ribbons articulated by internal structure.

Final Outcome

Agriculture Research Center, Raas Baalbeck, Beqaa, Lebanon | Architecture Thesis

The final outcome is an agriculture research center with an organic form that respects the terrain and blends harmoniously into its surroundings. The project attempts to revitalise the once-abandoned watermill and restore its cultural and historical significance by turning it into a social gathering place. Thus, the land’s agricultural significance is preserved for future generations.

Agriculture Research Center, Raas Baalbeck, Beqaa, Lebanon | Architecture Thesis

The project includes several features that facilitate and enable agricultural research and practices. Labs for plant breeding, soil management, water management, and fertiliser production are located in the basement. The research labs surround the central area of the building, which is bounded by the water stream from the watermill. To reflect the expansive panoramic views of the site, the vertices of the planes are extruded.

Agriculture Research Center, Raas Baalbeck, Beqaa, Lebanon | Architecture Thesis

The project is the area’s first airfield. It is not a sculpture; rather, it is a resource centre for the people who use and live in the Bekaa. The memory travels back in time with the water mills. The project’s focal point is these architectural monuments, which serve as both the project’s beginning and conclusion. They are recycled in order to provide the building with hydroelectricity. The agriculture center’s interior is equipped with regenerated water channels that serve as a centre for water testing.

Agriculture Research Center, Raas Baalbeck, Beqaa, Lebanon | Architecture Thesis

Conclusion: The architecture thesis showcases the effective use of contemporary building methods to produce a force that offers the user a unique experience in a simple yet appealing architectural form within a historical context. In addition to being a unique experience, this project serves as a social attraction.

A center of excellence for a sustainable food economy. This ambitious scientific project will develop research binding the quality of soil and food by dealing with the problems of life cycle and phytosanitary products: soil – plants – vegetable transformation processes – environment. It will provide better visibility to agronomic research and encourage sustainable agriculture in the region while strengthening the attractiveness of these complementary entities by creating a collective hub.

The Grand Arras Agronomic and Agri-food Research & Development Center / Atelier Téqui Architects - Exterior Photography, Windows, Facade

Volumetry. The project consists of the main volume in wood frame and cladding, which rises on the first floor. The entrance to the building is under a cantilever on the south facade of the project, marked by a higher volume, equivalent to a second floor, and seems more massive because it is built in stamped concrete. On the west facade, a terrace draws a hollow joint between the mineral and the plant. Finally, a metal profile horizontally surrounds the project for the passage of special fluids.

The Grand Arras Agronomic and Agri-food Research & Development Center / Atelier Téqui Architects - Interior Photography, Windows, Beam, Handrail

Materiality. The building is essentially designed with a wooden structure itself clad in autoclave Douglas fir wood cladding. This structure is based on a travertine-stamped concrete base (completed with a water-repellent coating) and on the volume of the first floor completed by high shoulders. Wood and concrete complement each other to express firstly the structural choices, but also to bring both great durabilities to the work while integrating more ecological materials. A metal profile surrounds the construction between the ground floor and the first floor in deep gray color and reinforces the horizontal dimension of the project. The joinery is compromised of wood inside and aluminum tinted gray deep outside.

A bright patio at the heart of the project. The entrance space is extended inside by a patio around which the building revolves. This allows natural light into the building but also offers the various users a landscaped outdoor space. It is a place of breathing and relaxation around which the various offices and laboratories are organized. Attached to the patio but also to the reception area is the main staircase which gives access to the first floor. This arrangement around a patio makes it possible to respond to possible changes to the building and also facilitates future restructuring in the medium and long term.

An ambitious environmental approach. The new INRAE building has constructive provisions that are both adapted to its use and exemplary from an environmental point of view. The structure is made of wood with both wood and concrete floors allowing large spans without intermediate pillars. The networks are visible for easier maintenance and a better understanding of the functioning of the laboratories. The architectural expression seeks first to show a constructive and energetic without forced and complex demonstration. It is a frugal building, a tool at the service of researchers, sober, minimal in its expression, open, transparent, and generous in its layout and spatial organization; natural light is everywhere. This new center is an architectural landmark in this business district.

Architectural design is a complex process involving different actors. while studying architecture, students usually work alone, and they do not have many opportunities to collaborate with other professions. consequently, they end up lacking the knowledge regarding other professions, as well asregarding communication and collaboration with other professionals. The main focus of this article is to determine the importance of interdiscipli-narycollaboration in architecture projects through the process of studyin-garchitecture, the role of the architect within this process, and the manner inwhich decisions are usually made within an interdisciplinary team. The following research is based on the AEc Global Teamwork course, whichtook place at Stanford University under the leadership of Prof. Dr. RenateFruch-ter. Students from all around the world worked together on an architectu-ralproject from its initial stages. There were three case studies examined for the purposes of thisarticle in which the main focus was placed on architects, more specificallyon the challenges and the problems they were facing, the knowledge architectsgained through interdisciplinary collaboration , and lessons learned insuch a course that could help them with their professional careers.

This paper reflects on the need to link inequality and architecture: is ethically unavoidable in one of the poorest regions of the country. Including the work of the architect in the field of development seems to be a new central problem, and the solution seems to be a review of the meaning of the concept of project.

Architecture should be understood as a logical, rational and appropriate response in a particular context. Any architectural output has to be perceived as being the product of a particular place, at a particular time and for a particular reason. The advent of cutting edge research and the resultant emerging technologies have affected and dictated the current architectural outputs. Today architects design irrespective of climate and geography. All the gaps are filled in by technology which comes with a huge cost to the environment. Architects have a key role to play in achieving the fine balance between human need and sustainability.

Purpose: With the conception of one’s professional life, it is essential to understand all the possibilities and opportunities that lie before them. In the case of architecture, there exists a bias towards the private sector where newly graduate students aspire to work in private practices and possibly even envision a practice of their own at a certain point in life. While there is nothing wrong with envisioning a future in the private sector, it is also essential to be aware about the public sector and understand the opportunities it provides to be able to make an informed decision. There is a preconceived notion about the monotonous nature of government jobs and a lack of awareness about students about the opportunities in this sector. Hence, it becomes crucial to understand the numerous opportunities this sector has to offer and thus, explore the potential of architects in government organizations. Methodology: The research for this paper has been done by referring to existing li...

Today our cities are rapidly changing through the expansion of metropolis and the implementation of numerous big-scale urban redevelopment projects. These projects have immediate impact on our environments and cause remarkable changes in our daily lives. The redevelopment of urban districts is more and more discussed in academic and professional circles. Concurrently the problematic results of politically motivated urban policies are confronted with growing public recognition and reaction. The importance of the design quality of the built environment is higher in public’s perception than before. This paper points to the changing demands entailed by urbanization that necessitates enlarging the activity area of architectural profession and education. It attempts to redefine the widening social role of the architect in the design and redevelopment of cities. It underlines that, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, we need a re-appraisal of professional practice and education in architecture in relation to the environmental and social challenges that seem more pressing today. The paper starts with an attempt to define the profile of today’s architect as it is discussed in professional and academic circles. This is followed by the discussion on the implications of the changing social responsibilities of the architect for architectural education through the themes of (1) the cultivation of values and a liberal education basis, (2) interdisciplinary education, and (3) community involvement. Discussion on the profession of architecture develops around the themes of (1) better communication and dialogue, (2) teamwork experiences, and (3) education and practice in a life-long continuum of learning.
