The University of Toronto has moved up one spot to 11 th globally in Times Higher Education’s latest employability ranking, meaning its graduates are among the world’s most sought after in the minds of employers.

The recently released Global University Employability Ranking 2022 also ranked U of T first in Canada – and first among public universities in North America – when it comes to recruiters’ opinions about which universities are best at preparing students for the workplace.

Among public universities globally, U of T ranked fifth for the employability of its alumni.

“This ranking reaffirms that the University of Toronto is equipping students with the tools they need to thrive in their careers,” said U of T President Meric Gertler . “Graduates leave U of T with the knowledge, experience, innovative drive and global mindset necessary to become leaders in a wide range of fields – and employers have clearly taken note.”

The employability ranking is based on a survey, conducted by HR consultancy Emerging, of recruiters and managers at top employers, the majority of which have more than 500 staff. Each respondent is asked to pick several universities from a list of 1,000 institutions based on employability performance. The votes are tallied to determine which schools rank in the top 250.

The top three schools in the 2022 edition of the ranking were Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology and Harvard University.

Canadian universities were well represented in this year’s ranking, which included institutions from 44 countries.

In addition to U of T, four other Canadian universities ranked among the top 100: McGill University (29), University of British Columbia (36), Université de Montréal (63) and McMaster University (81).

U of T’s strong performance in the employability ranking comes on the heels of a similarly impressive performance in the broader 2022 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, where it was ranked 18 th in the world and second among North American public institutions .

Overall, U of T continues to be one of the world’s top-ranked public universities in the five most closely watched international rankings: U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities, Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.

THE ranking 2022: France with champions of employability

The Times Higher Education (THE) has just released its new ranking of 250 higher education institutions focused on professional integration. France, Germany and China are part of the most represented countries in the ranking. Five French institutions are included in the Top 50 shortlist for the first time: Centrale Supélec, HEC, Polytechnique, EM Lyon business school and Mines ParisTech. In total, 18 French institutions are present in the ranking.

The Global University Employability Ranking is a global ranking of higher education institutions designed to take the employability of its graduates into account. The THE ranking is designed by the human resources consultancy Emerging and published every year since 2010 by the British newspaper to award institutions “producing the most employable graduates”. The ranking is based on a study to international recruiters and employers and designed using various criteria including the academic excellence of the institution, the skills of the student of the international scope of courses .

Professional experience integrated to studies

In 2022, 250 institutions in 44 countrie s form this ranking, all the more useful in the sense that, according to the THE, attending a training course in a school or university “ is not limited to preparing a career, but to choose the right institution ”, i.e. an institution that can “ certainly improve the prospects of higher education ”.

In some countries, says the THE, “ are not easy to find jobs for graduates, but in European countries such as France, Switzerland and Germany, professional experience is included in the studies programmes ”.

And “France, Germany and China are with the most represented countries in the ranking for employability, along with the United Kingdom and the United States” .

18 French institutions in the ranking

Schools of engineering and business schools are particularly well represented in the THE ranking, with a lower presence from universities.

In detail, five French institutions are included in the Top 50 : Centrale Supélec (18the place), HEC (23th), Polytechnique (33th), emlyon business school (41th) and Mines Paris Tech (50th).

In total, 18 French institutions are present in the ranking and go up several positions in the ranking.

In the Top 100 come six additional institutions : Sorbonne Université (52the position), ESSEC Business School (55th), EDHEC (57th), Ecole Normale Supérieure – PSL (59th), Université Paris-Saclay (68th) and ESCP Business School (70th).

From 100th to 250th position are seven additional French institutions : Arts et Métiers - ENSAM, Université Paris Dauphine - PSL, Ecole des Ponts – ParisTech, Institut Polytechnique de Paris (Télécom Paris), Ecole Centrale de Lyon, Skema Business School and Aix-Marseille Université (not ranked last year).

Explained: The Global Employability Ranking 2022, By Times Higher Education (THE)

 width=

The top 250 universities in the world for producing employable graduates are revealed by the Global Employability University Ranking and Survey (GEURS). The only publisher is THE, and it is created and owned by higher education HR consultancy Emerging.

Global Employability Ranking

In the top 200 of the most recent THE Rankings, five Indian institutions are listed, and seven are overall. The Global University Employability Ranking 2022, created by the HR consultancy Emerging and distributed exclusively by Times Higher Education, includes a list of top universities. The rankings show which colleges top employers believe do the best job of preparing students for the workforce.

Where do the Indian Universities stand?

IIT-Bombay moved up this year from position 97 to position 72, while IISc improved its ranking by three positions.

Other universities that have earned spots in the top 250 Global Employability University Ranking include the Indian Institute of Management, IIT-Kharagpur, Amity University, and Bangalore University. The other two Indian institutions in the top 175—IIT-Kharagpur (155), and IIM-Ahmedabad (154)—also saw an increase in their rankings of eight and fifteen spots, respectively.

The other institutes, with the exception of IIT-Delhi, saw an improvement in their rankings, with IIT-Bombay rising by 25 positions. The other two Indian institutions in the top 175—IIT-Kharagpur (155), and IIM-Ahmedabad (154)—also saw an increase in their rankings of eight and fifteen spots, respectively.

Other global Universities in ranking

Similar to last year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) placed first globally in this year's ranking. Harvard University and the California Institute of Technology came in second and third, respectively, behind MIT. These three institutions have held the top three spots in the same order for the past two years.

Stanford University is still in fifth place, while the University of Cambridge is still in fourth. The University of Oxford moved up this year, moving from eighth to sixth. However, the University of Tokyo from Japan dropped this year from sixth to seventh.

Princeton University moved up from tenth to ninth, while National University of Singapore climbed from ninth to eighth. However, Yale University has drastically dropped in standing from seventh in 2021 to tenth this year.

Six universities are participating this year, including one each from the US, the UK, Japan, and Singapore. Nevertheless, the ranking includes 44 nations and areas, including China, France, India, Spain, South Korea, Germany, and Israel. In addition, mainland Chinese universities are steadily moving up the rankings thanks to their graduates' strong work histories and skills. Spain has climbed the most in Europe over the past two years. But Florida Institute of Technology is the school that has advanced the most this year, moving up 76 places.

NUS graduates ranked 8th most employable worldwide

Commencement_2022

NUS graduates were ranked the eighth most employable in the world by recruiters, rising up one notch from last year, according to the 2022-2023 Global Employability University Ranking and Survey results.

NUS also retained its position among the top two in Asia – behind only the University of Tokyo at seventh place – and maintained its spot as the only Singapore university in the top 10. This is the third year in a row that NUS has emerged in the top 10 of the ranking.

Produced by the Paris-based HR consultancy Emerging and published by Times Higher Education, the ranking lists the top 250 universities according to graduate employability based on the views of international recruiters . The universities were assessed on six key drivers identified by businesses as the main contributors to creating employable graduates: academic excellence, internationality, digital performance, focus on work expertise, graduate skills and specialisation.

“We are delighted that NUS graduates across diverse fields have been recognised as eighth in the world by employers in Singapore and globally. It is a testament to the talented students we receive at NUS, and the quality of our professors and programmes,” said an NUS spokesperson.

“With global turmoil and a tightening job situation in the time ahead, the University will strive to ensure that our graduates continue to be grounded in broad-based, interdisciplinary, and lifelong learning, to help them stand out and thrive in a constantly evolving workplace.”   Ms Sandrine Belloc, Emerging’s Managing Partner, called NUS’ results in this year’s list an “incredible performance”. She noted that the University had swiftly risen up in the ranking over the past decade, moving from 49 th place in 2013 to ninth just seven years later in 2020. She added that the University had been rated particularly well in internationality, which considers a university’s international reputation, its international staff and curriculum, and share of international students .

GEURS TABLE-04

Now in its 12 th year, the survey gathered 98,014 votes from participating employers worldwide on which universities taught the key skills that students need to thrive in the workplace. Employers who took part provided around 800,000 graduate jobs or placements in 2022-2023 in total. Respondents of the survey were corporate managers from 24 countries who recruited and/or supervised more than five graduates a year.

Findings from this year’s results showed that digital skills – measured under the graduate skills component – have become the most important factor to employers since the COVID-19 pandemic. The two other key employability drivers regarded as important by recruiters were subject specialisation and work expertise.

“Today, 92 per cent of respondents to the survey believe universities should do more to increase digital skills. Digital skills are not the exclusive concern anymore of computer science faculties and their students, any university digital plan needs a transversal approach that includes all stakeholders,” said Ms Belloc in a press release.

Staying ahead with relevant skills

To equip students with the relevant skills to stay ahead in an increasingly digitalised world that has transformed the work environment, NUS had enhanced its General Education curriculum for students admitted from AY2021-22 to include both Data Literacy and Digital Literacy as part of its six key pillars of knowledge under the curriculum.

In recognition of the importance of a holistic education, the University also offers students global exposure through study-abroad programmes with over 300 partner universities in more than 40 countries. Students can also gain valuable real-world experience through internships at start-ups in entrepreneurial hotspots around the world under the NUS Overseas Colleges programme. As part of the NUS Centre for Future-ready Graduates (NUS CFG) Global Industry Insights programme , students can explore emerging and growth trends across industries by heading overseas to places like Thailand and Indonesia to learn about regional businesses and engage with industry professionals.

To boost the future readiness of NUS students and graduates, the University launched two new digital platforms – the Internship-As-A-Service (IAAS) and conNectUS in January this year. Led by NUS CFG and NUS Enterprise , IAAS is a platform that enables students to take on curated short-stint projects of flexible duration with local and overseas companies whether during the semester or vacations, with all projects recognised as internships. Meanwhile, conNectUS is the University’s professional networking platform allowing NUS students and alumni to connect, exchange career insights and tap into the hidden job market.

NUS CFG also holds career fairs to provide students engagement opportunities with industry players across diverse sectors. Other than large-scale signature fairs like the NUS Career Fest , Internship Day , and Postgraduate Career Fair, this includes the inaugural College of Humanities and Sciences (CHS) Navigator and College of Design and Engineering (CDE) Career Fair, both the result of close collaboration with each college.

However, 44 countries and regions are represented in the ranking including China, France, India, Spain, South Korea, Germany and Israel. Additionally, universities in mainland China are seeing a steady rise throughout the ranking due to strengths in graduate skills and work experience. Spain is the highest climber of the last two years in the Europe continent. However, Florida Institute of Technology is the highest climber this year, climbing 85 places to 76.

The survey found out that digital skills have become the most important factor to employers since the Covid-19 pandemic. Also, subject specialisation and work expertise closely follow graduate skills as important drivers of performance.

Piyush Mishra talks about being in early talks for Maine Pyaar Kiya.

Actor Piyush Mishra shared that he was approached for the lead role in Maine Pyar Kiya, but it wasn't a big deal as he was still a student at National School of Drama and was merely "considered" for the part, which was played by Salman Khan. He believes he wouldn't have been able to handle the stardom at that time and is happy things didn't work out.
