The Thesis Process

The thesis is an opportunity to work independently on a research project of your own design and contribute to the scholarly literature in your field. You emerge from the thesis process with a solid understanding of how original research is executed and how to best communicate research results. Many students have gone on to publish their research in academic or professional journals.

To ensure affordability, the per-credit tuition rate for the 8-credit thesis is the same as our regular course tuition. There are no additional fees (regular per-credit graduate tuition x 8 credits).

Below are the steps that you need to follow to fulfill the thesis requirement. Please know that through each step, you will receive guidance and mentorship.

1. Meet with Your Research Advisor

Upon admission to the program, set up an introductory meeting with your Research Advisor to discuss potential thesis topics as well as course selections that can support your thesis path. 

When you have completed between 24 and 32 credits, you work more intensively with your assigned Research Advisor to determine a specific thesis topic.

Log in to MyDCE , then ALB/ALM Community to schedule an appointment with your assigned Research Advisor via the Degree Candidate Portal.

Failure to work with your Research Advisor initially and then more intensively may result in your Crafting the Thesis Proposal (CTP) Application not being approved (see below) and/or the selection of a different thesis topic.  

Thesis Topic Selection Guidelines

Every effort is made to support research interests that are grounded in your ALM course work, but faculty guidance is not available for all possible projects. Therefore, revision or a change of thesis topic may be necessary.

  • The above point about topic selection is particularly pertinent to scientific research (e.g., biology) that is dependent upon laboratory space, project funding, and access to private databases.
  • This point is also critical for our candidates in ALM, liberal arts fields (i.e., anthropology, English, government, history, international relations, psychology, and religion) who are required to have Harvard faculty direct their thesis projects. Review Harvard’s course catalog online ( My.Harvard.edu ) to be sure that there are faculty teaching courses related to your thesis topic. If faculty are not available, you will need to choose an alternative topic.
  • Your topic choice must be a new area of research for you. You cannot re-purpose prior research. If you want to draw or expand upon your own previously written scholarship for a small portion of your thesis, you need to obtain the explicit permission of your research advisor and cite the work in both the proposal and thesis. Violations of this policy will be referred to the Administrative Board.

While it is natural to follow your interests in selecting a thesis topic, it is important to avoid choosing a topic where your own passions might produce insurmountable biases and assumptions. A thesis is not a piece of advocacy work where you are out to prove something that you already believe. Thesis projects must take a fair and balanced stance by bringing in differing points of view from respected scholars in the field. 

2. Prepare Your Crafting the Thesis Proposal Application

Once you and your Research Advisor have confirmed your thesis topic, the next step in the process is to prepare and submit the CTP Application in order to gain registration approval for the Crafting the Thesis Proposal (CTP) tutorial or course.

The CTP Application process confirms that you have done enough prior reading and thinking about your thesis topic to generate a pertinent and answerable research question. Pre-CTP preparation is critical as it helps to ensure that you will benefit from and succeed in the CTP.

Application Approvals and Denials. Your Research Advisor will provide feedback on your CTP Application.  If your application is not approved after 3 submissions, your Research Advisor cannot approve your CTP registration. 

If not approved, you’ll need to take additional time for further revisions and submit a new CTP Application during the next CTP submission cycle (if your five-year degree completion date allows).

Application Eligibility Requirements. To be eligible to submit a CTP Application, you need to (1) be in good standing and (2) have completed a minimum of 32 degree-applicable credits, including the research methods/statistics and Engaging in Scholarly Conversation requirement, if required for your field.

Advising Note for Psychology Candidates View More

Students in psychology sometimes face difficulty securing necessary IRB approvals for certain projects. For this reason, Research Advisors will not approve proposals that raise significant concerns about feasibility. Such concerns include cases where projects would require the researcher to possess a level of expertise or experience exceeding documented capabilities, as well as instances where the researcher is unlikely to be able to obtain appropriate faculty supervision for a proposed topic, question, method, or procedure. You must schedule an appointment with your Research Advisor at least three months in advance of the CTP Application deadlines to discuss potential research projects to ensure adequate time for assistance in developing a viable project idea.

Advising Note for Biology and former Biotechnology and Bioengineering and Nanotechnology Candidates View More

Thesis projects in these fields are designed to support ongoing scientific research happening in Harvard University, other academic institutions, or life science industry labs and usually these are done under the direction of a principal investigator (PI). Hence, you need to have a thesis director approved by your research advisor  prior  to submitting CTP Application. Your CTP Application is then framed by the lab’s research. Schedule an appointment with your research advisor a few months in advance of the CTP Application deadlines in order to discuss potential research projects and thesis director assignment.

The CTP Application is sent to our central email box:  [email protected] by the following firm deadlines:

  • June 1 for fall CTP
  • November 1 for spring CTP.  
  • September 1 for the three-week January session (ALM sustainability candidates only)
  • International sustainability students who need a student visa to attend Harvard Summer School must be officially admitted to the degree program before February 1, must submit the CTP Application on February 1, and must register for the CTP course on March 1 in order to submit timely I-20 paperwork. 3. Register and Successfully Complete Crafting the Thesis Proposal

Once your CTP Application is approved, you register for the Crafting the Thesis Proposal (CTP) tutorial or course as you would any other degree requirement.

The goal of the CTP is to produce a complete, well-written draft of a proposal containing all of the sections required by your Research Advisor. Creating an academically strong thesis proposal sets the foundation for a high-quality thesis and helps garner the attention of a well-respected thesis director.

Thesis proposals typically include approximately 15 to 20 pages of text, in addition to any required reference sections, such as bibliographies and glossary/definition of terms.

Tutorial experience. The fall and spring CTP  tutorials are not courses in the traditional sense. Although there will be assignments for you to complete during the CTP, with due dates, and there will be times when you and your classmates meet as a group with your Research Advisor, there won’t be a regularly scheduled class meeting time for the CTP. 

The main work for the CTP will consist of your working independently on your proposal with your Research Advisor by submitting multiple drafts and scheduling individual appointments.

Grading. You need to make self-directed progress on the proposal without special prompting from the research advisor. You receive a final grade of SAT or UNSAT (failing grade).

You are expected to incorporate all of your Research Advisor’s feedback and be fully committed to producing an academically strong proposal leading to a thesis worthy of a Harvard degree. If you are unable to take advice from your Research Advisor, follow directions, or produce an acceptable proposal, you will not pass the CTP.

The CTP for sustainability is a three-week course in the traditional sense and you receive a letter grade, and it must be B- or higher to receive degree credit for the course.

Academic Integrity. Successful CTP completion also includes a check on the proper use of sources according to our academic integrity guidelines. Violations of our academic integrity policy will be referred to the Administrative Board.

Maximum of two attempts . If you don’t pass the CTP, you’ll have — if your five-year, degree-completion date allows — just one more attempt to complete the CTP before being required to withdraw from the program. If you fail the CTP just once and have no more time to complete the degree, your candidacy will automatically expire. Please note that a WD grade counts as an attempt.

If by not passing the CTP you fall into poor academic standing, you will need to take additional degree-applicable courses to return to good standing before enrolling in the CTP for your second and final time, but only if your five-year, degree-completion date allows. If you have no more time on your five-year clock, you will be required to withdraw from the program.

Human Subjects

If your thesis, regardless of field, will involve the use of human subjects (e.g., interviews, surveys, observations), you will need to have your research vetted by the  Committee on the Use of Human Subjects  (CUHS) of Harvard University. Please review the IRB Lifecycle Guide located on the CUHS website. Your research advisor will help you prepare a draft copy of the project protocol form that you will then finalize with your thesis director to send to the CUHS. 

Given the amount of time that can be required for IRB review, drafting of the required CUHS project protocol forms need to be started with your Research Advisor during the CTP tutorial, before a thesis director has been assigned.

4. Post-CTP Proposal Approval, Thesis Director Assignment, and Registration

Successfully completion of the CTP means you have completed a well-written full draft proposal. Ordinarily, this full draft is not a final accepted proposal. Most students reach the final accepted proposal stage by submitting additional changes and edits to their RA post-CTP.

Post-CTP Changes and Edits Deadline. We expect you to work diligently and quickly with your RA post-CTP to move from full draft to final proposal stage. Indeed, you should have an approved final proposal and be registered in the thesis soon after CTP completion, within weeks, but no later than 3 months. You cannot delay. If you take longer than 3 months after the CTP to register for the thesis, you may be required to retake the CTP.

Thesis Director Assignment. Once your RA has determined that your draft has reached the final proposal stage, you move to the thesis director assignment stage. The Research Advisor places you with a thesis director by sending out your final proposal to prospective Thesis Directors.

Do not approach faculty to ask about directing your thesis.  You may suggest names of any potential Thesis Directors to your Research Advisor, but it must be the Research Advisor who makes contact with them. (If they are eligible/available to direct your thesis, after you have an approved thesis proposal.) You are not permitted to approach faculty to ask them about directing your thesis.

Registration. When a Thesis Director has been identified or the thesis proposal has been fully vetted by the preassigned life science Thesis Director, you will receive a letter of authorization from the Assistant Dean of Academic Programs officially approving your thesis work and providing you with instructions on how to register for the eight-credit master’s thesis. The letter will also have a tentative graduation date as well as four mandatory thesis submission dates (see Thesis Timetable below).

When registering for the thesis, you will have two weeks to pay in full.  This is an eight-credit course, so be sure to have the necessary funds available when you register.

You must be good academic standing to register for the thesis. If not, you’ll need to complete additional courses to bring your GPA up to the 3.0 minimum prior to registration.

Thesis Submission Deadlines and Graduation Timetable

The thesis is a 9-to-12-month project that begins after the Crafting the Thesis Proposal (CTP); when your Research Advisor has approved your proposal and identified a Thesis Director.

As you can see above, you do not submit your thesis all at once at the end, but in four phases: (1) complete draft to TD, (2) final draft to RA for format review and academic integrity check, (3) format approved draft submitted to TD for grading, and (4) upload your 100% complete graded thesis to ETDs.

Due dates for all phases for your assigned graduation cycle cannot be missed.  You must submit materials by the date indicated by 5 PM EST (even if the date falls on a weekend). If you are late, you will not be able to graduate during your assigned cycle.

If you need additional time to complete your thesis, you need to formally request an extension by emailing that petition to:  [email protected] .  Regardless of when you started, the maximum allotted time to complete your thesis, including any granted extensions of time is 12 months.

Advising Tip to Meet Your Five-Year Deadline: The last possible time you can register for the CTP to meet your five-year deadline date is the fall term two years prior or, if a sustainability student, in the January session one year prior. It is not, however, recommended to wait this long. Indeed, it is vigorously discouraged.

For example, if your five-year deadline is May 2026:

  • Complete the CTP in fall 2024 (or in January 2025, if a sustainability student)
  • Be assigned a Thesis Director (TD) in March/April 2025
  • Begin the 9–12-month thesis project with TD
  • Submit a complete draft of your thesis to your TD by February 1, 2026
  • Follow through with all other submission deadlines (April 1, April 15 and May 1 — see table above)
  • Graduate in May 2026

5. Working with Your Thesis Director

You must work diligently and independently, following the advice of your Thesis Director in a consistent, regular manner equivalent to full-time academic work to complete both the research and the writing phases of your thesis by your required timeline.

You are expected to incorporate all of your Thesis Director’s feedback and be fully committed to producing an academically strong thesis worthy of a Harvard degree. If you are unable to take advice from your Thesis Director, follow directions, or produce an acceptable scholarly thesis product, you will not receive a passing grade.

You are required to produce at least 50 pages of text (not including front matter and appendices). Chapter topics (e.g., introduction, background, methods, findings, conclusion) vary by field.

Once registered in the thesis, we will do a 3-month check-in with you and your Thesis Director to ensure progress is being made. If your Thesis Director reports little to no progress, the Dean of Academic Programs reserves the right to issue a thesis not complete (TNC) grade (see Thesis Grading below).

6. Thesis Template, Format Review, and Academic Integrity Check

All ALM thesis projects must written in Microsoft Word and follow a specific Harvard Extension School format. A properly formatted thesis is an explicit degree requirement; you cannot graduate without it.

You are required to use the Extension School  ALM Thesis Template  or the Extension School ALM Thesis Template for Creative Writing  (specifically designed for creative writing degree candidates). The template has all the mandatory thesis formatting built in.

Besides saving you a considerable amount of time as you write your thesis, the template ensures that your submitted thesis meets the mandatory style guidelines for margins, font, title page, table of contents, and chapter headings. If you use the template, format review should go smoothly, if not, a delayed graduation is highly likely.

Your Research Advisor will complete the format review  prior  to submitting your thesis to your Thesis Director for final grading according to the Thesis Timetable (see above).

Academic Integrity. Format review also includes a check on the proper use of sources according to our  academic integrity  guidelines. Violations of our academic integrity policy will be referred to the Administrative Board.

7. Mandatory Thesis Archiving

Once your thesis is finalized, meaning that the required grade has been earned and all edits have been completed, you must upload your thesis to Harvard University’s electronic thesis and dissertation submission system (ETDs).

Uploading your thesis ETDs is an explicit degree requirement; you cannot graduate without completing this step. Furthermore, no changes to the thesis are allowed once it has been graded and archived in ETDs.

The thesis project will be sent to several downstream systems:

  • Your work will be preserved using Harvard’s digital repository DASH (Digital Access to Scholarship at Harvard).
  • Metadata about your work will be sent to HOLLIS (the Harvard Library catalog).
  • Your work will be preserved in Harvard Library’s DRS2 (digital preservation repository).

By submitting work through ETDs @ Harvard you will be signing the Harvard Author Agreement. This license does not constrain your rights to publish your work subsequently. You retain all intellectual property rights.

Thesis Grading

You need to earn a grade of B- or higher in the thesis. If you fail to complete substantial work on the thesis, you will earn a grade of TNC (thesis not complete). If you have already earned two withdrawal grades, the TNC grade will count as a zero in your cumulative GPA.

If you earn a grade below B-, you will need to petition the Administrative Board for permission to attempt the thesis for a second and final time. The petition process is only available if you are in good academic standing and your five-year, degree-completion date allows for more time. Your candidacy will automatically expire if you do not successfully complete the thesis by your required date.

If approved for a second attempt, you may be required to develop a new proposal on a different topic by re-enrolling in the CTP and being assigned a different thesis director. Tuition for the second attempt is calculated at the current year’s rate.

If by not passing the thesis you fall into poor academic standing, you’ll need to take additional degree-applicable courses to return to good standing before re-engaging with the thesis process for the second and final time. This is only an option if your five-year, degree-completion date allows for more time.

The Board only reviews cases in which extenuating circumstances prevented the successful completion of the thesis.

psychology Thesis (PSYC 4950)

As a psychology major, you may conduct a research project under the direction of a faculty member through a senior thesis program. This program is aimed to help students wanting to enter a doctoral program in psychology. Our undergraduate students have published research in major psychology journals and have won undergraduate research competitions for their work on their thesis project.

What is a Thesis?

A Psychology Thesis, Psychology 4950, is designed to give undergraduate students their first experience with conducting their own research project in the field of psychology similar to what can be anticipated at their graduate level. It is recommended that before signing up to complete a Thesis, students have an idea of a research topic of interest and and have contacted a faculty member who will act as their mentor.

*Students should begin working with a faculty member at the beginning of their junior year or preferably earlier if possible.*

Minimum Requirements to Apply

  • Must have taken the following courses: PSYC 2317 , PSYC 3650 , PSYC 3630
  • Have a minimum of 18 hours in psychology
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.5 in psychology and 3.0 overall
  • Complete the Special Registration Form and receive faculty approval

Time Commitment for Completing the Psychology Thesis

Engaging in the Thesis project requires a large amount of time, effort and a strong commitment. The typical length to complete a thesis can vary due to the complexity of the research topic and a students' course load. However, on average, the project takes about a year to complete after the student has selected a faculty mentor and chosen an acceptable research project to complete. Typically, student should anticipate spending approximately 8‐10 hours per week on the project. Keep in mind that this is just the average amount of time which will vary considerably depending on in which stage the project is and the various activities involved in the project.

Role of the Faculty Mentor

The primary function of the mentor will be to assist the student with the research project. The mentor will assist the student in formulating a research project, analyzing the data, writing up the results, and writing the Thesis proposal. The mentor will also serve as the chair of the student's thesis committee and selecting faculty members to serve on the committee to which the student will present their project. Another important role of the mentor is that they will get to know the student in a professional and personal manner and may be an important person to ask to write a letter of recommendation for graduate school admittance.

How to Select a Mentor

1. Student should decide on a general topic that they would like to study.

  • A search of the literature on the topic may assist a student in understanding more about the research done in that area to provide students ideas for their thesis.

2. Seek out a faculty member to act as their mentor.

  • The undergraduate advising office has a list of current faculty members and their research interests, which may be helpful in deciding who to approach and ask to advise the Thesis.
  • Students can also visit the Faculty Page to read about faculty research interests​
  • Often times students will ask their professors they have for a class to act as their mentor whose research and interpersonal style are congruent with the student's.

3. If the student experiences difficulties in finding a mentor he or she may seek out suggestions or guidance from an undergraduate advisor. Although advisors are not responsible for finding a mentor for the student, they may offer advice on how to approach and ask a faculty member.

What to Expect When Preparing to Present Your Thesis

1. Students are required to initially present their ideas for a research project to a panel or committee of experts. This presentation is called a "T hesis Proposal ."

  • This panel is usually composed of 2 or 3 faculty members in that student's department. Oftentimes, but not always, the student will request a faculty member from another field or department to sit on this committee. Some reasons for this is that a member from another department may have skills which other members of the panel may not (e.g., extensive statistical background) or have a different perspective on that person's research interests.

2. Once the project is completed, the student normally presents their findings to that same panel again. This is referred to as the " Thesis Defense. "

  • At this time, the panel's responsibility is to evaluate the quality of the project and make recommendations for ways to improve the study if not approved.

3. The final step is to write a manuscript , adhering to the current APA style. The manuscript must be a minimum length of 15 double spaced pages, including the (1) title page, (2) literature review, (3) results section, (4) discussion section, and (5) references. The normal length of the manuscript is usually 15‐30 pages.

Is a Thesis Necessary to Get Into Graduate School?

No. In fact, many students from the university and other schools are admitted into a graduate program in psychology who have not completed a Thesis. Many doctoral level programs in psychology, especially those offering the Ph.D., prefer students who are interested in and have had some experience with research. Therefore the chances of being admitted into a graduate program in psychology may be higher if a student has completed an independent research project like an Honors Thesis. It is also possible to obtain research experience by working on ongoing research projects in the department, but approval must be received from the appropriate professor conducting the research.

How does PSYC 4950 psychology differ from psyc 4951 honors college capstone thesis?

The PSYC 4950 Psychology Thesis is strictly for the Psychology Department. Students majoring in a B.S. Psychology Degree are NOT enrolled in the Honors College. Instead, students usually enroll in PSYC 4950 if they want to complete a thesis to help them be more competitive for graduate school, law school, or medical school. Thus, a Psychology Thesis must be completed according to the guidelines within the Department of Psychology.

However, the PSYC 4951 Honors College Capstone Thesis is strictly with the Honors College. A student must be enrolled in the Honors College to complete it. A student who has a BS with a Major in Psychology with membership in the Honors College must complete a thesis according to the guidelines within the Honors College. Why use a dissertation or a thesis.

A dissertation is the final large research paper, based on original research, for many disciplines to be able to complete a PhD degree. The thesis is the same idea but for a masters degree.

They are often considered scholarly sources since they are closely supervised by a committee, are directed at an academic audience, are extensively researched, follow research methodology, and are cited in other scholarly work. Often the research is newer or answering questions that are more recent, and can help push scholarship in new directions.

University of Minnesota Dissertations and Theses FAQs

What dissertations and theses are available.

With minor exceptions, all doctoral dissertations and all "Plan A" master's theses accepted by the University of Minnesota are available in the University Libraries system. In some cases (see below) only a non-circulating copy in University Archives exists, but for doctoral dissertations from 1940 to date, and for master's theses from 1925 to date, a circulating copy should almost always be available.

"Plan B" papers, accepted in the place of a thesis in many master's degree programs, are not received by the University Libraries and are generally not available. (The only real exceptions are a number of old library school Plan B papers on publishing history, which have been separately cataloged.) In a few cases individual departments may have maintained files of such papers.

In what libraries are U of M dissertations and theses located?

Circulating copies of doctoral dissertations:.

  • Use Libraries Search to look for the author or title of the work desired to determine location and call number of a specific dissertation. Circulating copies of U of M doctoral dissertations can be in one of several locations in the library system, depending upon the date and the department for which the dissertation was done. The following are the general rules:
  • Dissertations prior to 1940 Circulating copies of U of M dissertations prior to 1940 do not exist (with rare exceptions): for these, only the archival copy (see below) is available. Also, most dissertations prior to 1940 are not cataloged in MNCAT and can only be identified by the departmental listings described below.  
  • Dissertations from 1940-1979 Circulating copies of U of M dissertations from 1940 to 1979 will in most cases be held within the Elmer L. Andersen Library, with three major classes of exceptions: dissertations accepted by biological, medical, and related departments are housed in the Health Science Library; science/engineering dissertations from 1970 to date will be located in the Science and Engineering Library (in Walter); and dissertations accepted by agricultural and related departments are available at the Magrath Library or one of the other libraries on the St. Paul campus (the Magrath Library maintains records of locations for such dissertations).  
  • Dissertations from 1980-date Circulating copies of U of M dissertations from 1980 to date at present may be located either in Wilson Library (see below) or in storage; consult Libraries Search for location of specific items. Again, exceptions noted above apply here also; dissertations in their respective departments will instead be in Health Science Library or in one of the St. Paul campus libraries.

Circulating copies of master's theses:

  • Theses prior to 1925 Circulating copies of U of M master's theses prior to 1925 do not exist (with rare exceptions); for these, only the archival copy (see below) is available.  
  • Theses from 1925-1996 Circulating copies of U of M master's theses from 1925 to 1996 may be held in storage; consult Libraries search in specific instances. Once again, there are exceptions and theses in their respective departments will be housed in the Health Science Library or in one of the St. Paul campus libraries.  
  • Theses from 1997-date Circulating copies of U of M master's theses from 1997 to date will be located in Wilson Library (see below), except for the same exceptions for Health Science  and St. Paul theses. There is also an exception to the exception: MHA (Masters in Health Administration) theses through 1998 are in the Health Science Library, but those from 1999 on are in Wilson Library.

Archival copies (non-circulating)

Archival (non-circulating) copies of virtually all U of M doctoral dissertations from 1888-1952, and of U of M master's theses from all years up to the present, are maintained by University Archives (located in the Elmer L. Andersen Library). These copies must be consulted on the premises, and it is highly recommended for the present that users make an appointment in advance to ensure that the desired works can be retrieved for them from storage. For dissertations accepted prior to 1940 and for master's theses accepted prior to 1925, University Archives is generally the only option (e.g., there usually will be no circulating copy). Archival copies of U of M doctoral dissertations from 1953 to the present are maintained by Bell and Howell Corporation (formerly University Microfilms Inc.), which produces print or filmed copies from our originals upon request. (There are a very few post-1952 U of M dissertations not available from Bell and Howell; these include such things as music manuscripts and works with color illustrations or extremely large pages that will not photocopy well; in these few cases, our archival copy is retained in University Archives.)

Where is a specific dissertation of thesis located?

To locate a specific dissertation or thesis it is necessary to have its call number. Use Libraries Search for the author or title of the item, just as you would for any other book. Depending on date of acceptance and cataloging, a typical call number for such materials should look something like one of the following:

Dissertations: Plan"A" Theses MnU-D or 378.7M66 MnU-M or 378.7M66 78-342 ODR7617 83-67 OL6156 Libraries Search will also tell the library location (MLAC, Health Science Library, Magrath or another St. Paul campus library, Science and Engineering, Business Reference, Wilson Annex or Wilson Library). Those doctoral dissertations still in Wilson Library (which in all cases should be 1980 or later and will have "MnU-D" numbers) are located in the central section of the third floor. Those master's theses in Wilson (which in all cases will be 1997 or later and will have "MnU-M" numbers) are also located in the central section of the third floor. Both dissertations and theses circulate and can be checked out, like any other books, at the Wilson Circulation desk on the first floor.

How can dissertations and theses accepted by a specific department be located?

Wilson Library contains a series of bound and loose-leaf notebooks, arranged by department and within each department by date, listing dissertations and theses. Information given for each entry includes name of author, title, and date (but not call number, which must be looked up individually). These notebooks are no longer current, but they do cover listings by department from the nineteenth century up to approximately 1992. Many pre-1940 U of M dissertations and pre-1925 U of M master's theses are not cataloged (and exist only as archival copies). Such dissertations can be identified only with these volumes. The books and notebooks are shelved in the general collection under these call numbers: Wilson Ref LD3337 .A5 and Wilson Ref quarto LD3337 .U9x. Major departments of individual degree candidates are also listed under their names in the GRADUATE SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT programs of the U of M, available in University Archives and (for recent years) also in Wilson stacks (LD3361 .U55x).

Guide to writing your thesis/dissertation, definition of dissertation and thesis.

The dissertation or thesis is a scholarly treatise that substantiates a specific point of view as a result of original research that is conducted by students during their graduate study. At Cornell, the thesis is a requirement for the receipt of the M.A. and M.S. degrees and some professional master’s degrees. The dissertation is a requirement of the Ph.D. degree.

Formatting Requirement and Standards

The Graduate School sets the minimum format for your thesis or dissertation, while you, your special committee, and your advisor/chair decide upon the content and length. Grammar, punctuation, spelling, and other mechanical issues are your sole responsibility. Generally, the thesis and dissertation should conform to the standards of leading academic journals in your field. The Graduate School does not monitor the thesis or dissertation for mechanics, content, or style.

“Papers Option” Dissertation or Thesis

A “papers option” is available only to students in certain fields, which are listed on the Fields Permitting the Use of Papers Option page , or by approved petition. If you choose the papers option, your dissertation or thesis is organized as a series of relatively independent chapters or papers that you have submitted or will be submitting to journals in the field. You must be the only author or the first author of the papers to be used in the dissertation. The papers-option dissertation or thesis must meet all format and submission requirements, and a singular referencing convention must be used throughout.

ProQuest Electronic Submissions

The dissertation and thesis become permanent records of your original research, and in the case of doctoral research, the Graduate School requires publication of the dissertation and abstract in its original form. All Cornell master’s theses and doctoral dissertations require an electronic submission through ProQuest, which fills orders for paper or digital copies of the thesis and dissertation and makes a digital version available online via their subscription database, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses . For master’s theses, only the abstract is available. ProQuest provides worldwide distribution of your work from the master copy. You retain control over your dissertation and are free to grant publishing rights as you see fit. The formatting requirements contained in this guide meet all ProQuest specifications.

Copies of Ph.D. dissertations and master’s theses are also uploaded in PDF format to the Cornell Library Repository, eCommons . A print copy of each master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation is submitted to Cornell University Library by ProQuest.

While studying abroad in Peru, I began a research project examining how Quechua farmers in the Cusco region respond to the degradation of native forests. With support from the Elliott School’s Undergraduate Scholars Research Program, I returned to Cusco for several weeks to further investigate the relationship between the indigenous communities and the NGO working to restore the forests... This yearlong research led to a deeper understanding of how NGOs can create sustainable development programs that foster local investment and empower communities.

Some of Our Opportunities

Independent Study courses are an opportunity for students in the Elliott School to receive credit for individualized academic projects supervised by a GW faculty advisor. The faculty advisor may be any GW professor who has taught at GW at least two times in the past three years, and they must have knowledge of the issue or topic the student will explore in the independent study. Independent Study coursework must not duplicate courses that are traditionally offered at the University. This research opportunity offers a range of credit options, which are determined by the length of the research paper:

  • 1 credit = 10 page minimum
  • 2 credits = 20 page minimum
  • 3 credits = 30 page minimum

Eligibility

  • Junior or senior standing (60 or more earned credit hours)
  • Cumulative GPA must be 3.0 or higher at time of application

Course Requirements

IAFF 3198: Independent Study and Research  — To complete the independent study, students must fulfill the following academic requirements:

  • Research Paper: Students must complete a research paper relevant to contemporary international affairs. The paper is to be developed over the course of the semester in conjunction with the faculty advisor. The faculty advisor has final approval on all aspects of the paper except the length, which is described above.
  • Readings: Decisions regarding what books and articles must be read are to be negotiated by the student and the faculty advisor. Faculty advisors may assign readings or they may approve readings that students suggest if they feel the content is appropriate and relevant. In addition, faculty advisors have the authority to set deadlines and assign any related work.
  • Faculty/Student Meetings: The faculty advisor and the student will meet regularly throughout the semester.

  • Sign the student's Independent Study application

Students are able to apply for an internship course for credit or for zero credits. The internship course for credit has two options: 1) Students can enroll in the Research Paper course and work closely with a faculty advisor to write a final research paper relevant to their internship and contemporary international affairs; or  2) Students can enroll in the Professional Development Seminar that will emphasize professional competencies, leadership, and skills development.  Details about all options can be found in the Guidelines linked below.

International Internships

Governments and organizations outside the US sometimes require prospective undergraduate student interns to complete internship agreements that the George Washington University cannot support. Instead, and in consultation with our Office of General Council, the University has created an internship agreement form that you can submit to those governments or organizations to complete. Please contact Sarah Squire , the director of undergraduate academic advising, if you are pursuing an internship opportunity with a government or organization outside the US that requires you and GW to sign an internship agreement form. 

Research Seminar courses provide an opportunity for students to write a substantial research paper on an issue related to the general subject of the seminar. Students will earn 3 credit hours by completing a Research Seminar course (IAFF 4191 or 4191W).

Students must meet all of the following requirements in order to register for a Research Seminar:

  • Junior or senior standing (60 or more earned credit hours)
  • Cumulative GPA must be 3.4 or higher at time of application

IAFF 4191: Research Seminar  — To complete the Research Seminar, students must attend a course that meets weekly. The seminars can be viewed on GWEB or on the GW Schedule of Classes by searching for IAFF 4191 or IAFF 4191W. Research Seminars topics vary and are subject to availability (Some topics are not offered each semester).

How to Register for the IAFF 4191: Research Seminar

Students must submit a  Registration Transaction Form (RTF) (PDF)  to your academic advisor. Your academic advisor will then verify your eligibility, and sign you into the course.

Earning Elliott School Special Honors

Students who complete a Research Seminar course as a senior with a grade of A- or higher, earn a cumulative GPA of 3.7 upon graduation, and earn 60 credit hours in residence at GW will be awarded Special Honors. Special Honors is noted on a line of the final transcript that indicates graduation with Special Honors from the Elliott School.

*Please note ESIA Special Honors is designated to students participating in the Research Seminar in their final year of study. Juniors who take the Research Seminar can take another Research Seminar during their Senior Year if they wish to qualify for ESIA Special Honors and concurrently satisfy additional requirements within their specific plan of study. Students are encouraged to consult with their Academic Advisor if planning on taking the Research Seminar as a Junior. 

The Senior Thesis is an opportunity for students to participate in a semester-long independent research project under the guidance of  a GW faculty advisor. The faculty advisor may be any GW professor who has taught at GW at least two times in the past three years, and they must have knowledge of the issue or topic the student will explore in the senior thesis. During the semester, students will write a substantial research paper on an issue related to international affairs. Students will earn three credit hours for completing the Senior Thesis course (IAFF 4199) . 

Students must meet all of the following requirements prior to applying for registration.

  • Senior standing (90 or more earned credit hours)
  • Cumulative GPA must be 3.4 or higher at the time of application
  • Final Year of study at GW

IAFF 4199: Senior Thesis  — Students must conduct original research and write 30 or more pages about an international affairs topic of their choice. Students are responsible for finding a GW faculty advisor who is willing to meet on a regular basis throughout the semester to supervise the research and writing process.

Seniors applying for the thesis option (fall or spring) are required to 

  • Review the IAFF 4199  information slides . 
  • Identify a GW faculty advisor to work with. Students should discuss their project with their prospective faculty advisor and define their research question well ahead of the deadline - preferably in the previous semester.
  • Follow the registration process listed below.

Once received, applications will be reviewed for eligibility.

Dean's Scholars Program  

The Elliott School of International Affairs created the Dean’s Scholars Program to provide an intensive research opportunity for undergraduate students who wanted to distinguish themselves both professionally and academically. Designed to be a two-year program, juniors and seniors interested in expanding their knowledge and skills in the field of International Affairs. Selected participants are supported in designing individual research projects and conducting field research in their specific area of interest under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Applications open in the spring semester of students' sophomore year.

Benefits of the Program

  • Small group research classes that allows collaborative and in-depth learning across multiple semesters.
  • Customized curriculum that guides each student through the research design, data collection and writing processes.
  • Close relationship with faculty mentor and the program's Associate Director. 
  • Financial support to be used for research travel, materials, and expenses.
  • Support and mentoring for fellowship applications . 

General schedule of the program

  • Junior Fall Semester – IAFF 2040: Research Methods in International Affairs – Scholars take a 3-credit research methods section specifically tailored to the Dean’s Scholars program where they will design their research project.
  • Junior Spring Semester – Scholars take a 1-credit seminar where they will refine their project proposals, prepare data collection materials, and obtain approval through GW’s Institutional Review Board before conducting their research.
  • Junior Summer Semester – Scholars conduct their fieldwork and begin data analysis.
  • Senior Fall Semester – Scholars take a 3-credit WID course where they will analyze their data and write-up their research papers.
  • Senior Spring Semester – Scholars present their research at conferences, submit their revised papers to peer-reviewed journals, and finish any fellowship applications.

Research Assistant Awards

To encourage students to participate in faculty-led research projects, the Elliott School offers the Research Assistant award. The Application form and deadline are available on the Funding Opportunities page .

Elliott School faculty may seek outstanding students to assist them with an original research project. Selected students will receive an undergraduate research award of up to $1,500 to help with faculty-led research. The size of the award will depend on the amount of research work the undergraduate is likely to perform. Although an Elliott School faculty member must lead the research project, the student recipients of these awards are not required to be Elliott School students.

Research Awards

To encourage students to pursue their own original research, the Elliott School offers the Undergraduate Research Award. The Application form and deadline are available on the Funding Opportunities page .

These awards are for student-initiated projects designed to help with student research expenses (e.g., data collection, the purchase of research materials, and project-related travel). To be eligible to apply, the student must be an Elliott School undergraduate who is enrolled in a Senior Thesis, Research Seminar, or Independent Study course.

Information about these awards and when students can apply are sent via email from the Elliott School and are included in the advising newsletter.  In addition to the above awards, students may find research funding opportunities at their center, institute, or program.

25 Thesis Statement Examples That Will Make Writing a Breeze

Understanding what makes a good thesis statement is one of the major keys to writing a great research paper or argumentative essay. The thesis statement is where you make a claim that will guide you through your entire paper. If you find yourself struggling to make sense of your paper or your topic, then it's likely due to a weak thesis statement.

Let's take a minute to first understand what makes a solid thesis statement, and what key components you need to write one of your own.

Perfecting Your Thesis Statement

A thesis statement always goes at the beginning of the paper. It will typically be in the first couple of paragraphs of the paper so that it can introduce the body paragraphs, which are the supporting evidence for your thesis statement.

Your thesis statement should clearly identify an argument. You need to have a statement that is not only easy to understand, but one that is debatable. What that means is that you can't just put any statement of fact and have it be your thesis. For example, everyone knows that puppies are cute . An ineffective thesis statement would be, "Puppies are adorable and everyone knows it." This isn't really something that's a debatable topic.

Something that would be more debatable would be, "A puppy's cuteness is derived from its floppy ears, small body, and playfulness." These are three things that can be debated on. Some people might think that the cutest thing about puppies is the fact that they follow you around or that they're really soft and fuzzy.

All cuteness aside, you want to make sure that your thesis statement is not only debatable, but that it also actually thoroughly answers the research question that was posed. You always want to make sure that your evidence is supporting a claim that you made (and not the other way around). This is why it's crucial to read and research about a topic first and come to a conclusion later. If you try to get your research to fit your thesis statement, then it may not work out as neatly as you think. As you learn more, you discover more (and the outcome may not be what you originally thought).

Additionally, your thesis statement shouldn't be too big or too grand. It'll be hard to cover everything in a thesis statement like, "The federal government should act now on climate change." The topic is just too large to actually say something new and meaningful. Instead, a more effective thesis statement might be, "Local governments can combat climate change by providing citizens with larger recycling bins and offering local classes about composting and conservation." This is easier to work with because it's a smaller idea, but you can also discuss the overall topic that you might be interested in, which is climate change.

So, now that we know what makes a good, solid thesis statement, you can start to write your own. If you find that you're getting stuck or you are the type of person who needs to look at examples before you start something, then check out our list of thesis statement examples below.

A quick note that these thesis statements have not been fully researched. These are merely examples to show you what a thesis statement might look like and how you can implement your own ideas into one that you think of independently. As such, you should not use these thesis statements for your own research paper purposes. They are meant to be used as examples only.

  • Vaccinations Because many children are unable to vaccinate due to illness, we must require that all healthy and able children be vaccinated in order to have herd immunity.
  • Educational Resources for Low-Income Students Schools should provide educational resources for low-income students during the summers so that they don't forget what they've learned throughout the school year.
  • School Uniforms School uniforms may be an upfront cost for families, but they eradicate the visual differences in income between students and provide a more egalitarian atmosphere at school.
  • Populism The rise in populism on the 2016 political stage was in reaction to increasing globalization, the decline of manufacturing jobs, and the Syrian refugee crisis.
  • Public Libraries Libraries are essential resources for communities and should be funded more heavily by local municipalities.
  • Cyber Bullying With more and more teens using smartphones and social media, cyber bullying is on the rise. Cyber bullying puts a lot of stress on many teens, and can cause depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. Parents should limit the usage of smart phones, monitor their children's online activity, and report any cyber bullying to school officials in order to combat this problem.
  • Medical Marijuana for Veterans Studies have shown that the use of medicinal marijuana has been helpful to veterans who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Medicinal marijuana prescriptions should be legal in all states and provided to these veterans. Additional medical or therapy services should also be researched and implemented in order to help them re-integrate back into civilian life.
  • Work-Life Balance Corporations should provide more work from home opportunities and six-hour workdays so that office workers have a better work-life balance and are more likely to be productive when they are in the office.
  • Teaching Youths about Consensual Sex Although sex education that includes a discussion of consensual sex would likely lead to less sexual assault, parents need to teach their children the meaning of consent from a young age with age appropriate lessons.
  • Whether or Not to Attend University A degree from a university provides invaluable lessons on life and a future career, but not every high school student should be encouraged to attend a university directly after graduation. Some students may benefit from a trade school or a "gap year" where they can think more intensely about what it is they want to do for a career and how they can accomplish this.
  • Studying Abroad Studying abroad is one of the most culturally valuable experiences you can have in college. It is the only way to get completely immersed in another language and learn how other cultures and countries are different from your own.
  • Women's Body Image Magazines have done a lot in the last five years to include a more diverse group of models, but there is still a long way to go to promote a healthy woman's body image collectively as a culture.
  • Cigarette Tax Heavily taxing and increasing the price of cigarettes is essentially a tax on the poorest Americans, and it doesn't deter them from purchasing. Instead, the state and federal governments should target those economically disenfranchised with early education about the dangers of smoking.
  • Veganism A vegan diet, while a healthy and ethical way to consume food, indicates a position of privilege. It also limits you to other cultural food experiences if you travel around the world.
  • University Athletes Should be Compensated University athletes should be compensated for their service to the university, as it is difficult for these students to procure and hold a job with busy academic and athletic schedules. Many student athletes on scholarship also come from low-income neighborhoods and it is a struggle to make ends meet when they are participating in athletics.
  • Women in the Workforce Sheryl Sandberg makes a lot of interesting points in her best-selling book, Lean In , but she only addressed the very privileged working woman and failed to speak to those in lower-skilled, lower-wage jobs.
  • Assisted Suicide Assisted suicide should be legal and doctors should have the ability to make sure their patients have the end-of-life care that they want to receive.
  • Celebrity and Political Activism Although Taylor Swift's lyrics are indicative of a feminist perspective, she should be more politically active and vocal to use her position of power for the betterment of society.
  • The Civil War The insistence from many Southerners that the South seceded from the Union for states' rights versus the fact that they seceded for the purposes of continuing slavery is a harmful myth that still affects race relations today.
  • Blue Collar Workers Coal miners and other blue-collar workers whose jobs are slowly disappearing from the workforce should be re-trained in jobs in the technology sector or in renewable energy. A program to re-train these workers would not only improve local economies where jobs have been displaced, but would also lead to lower unemployment nationally.
  • Diversity in the Workforce Having a diverse group of people in an office setting leads to richer ideas, more cooperation, and more empathy between people with different skin colors or backgrounds.
  • Re-Imagining the Nuclear Family The nuclear family was traditionally defined as one mother, one father, and 2.5 children. This outdated depiction of family life doesn't quite fit with modern society. The definition of normal family life shouldn't be limited to two-parent households.
  • Digital Literacy Skills With more information readily available than ever before, it's crucial that students are prepared to examine the material they're reading and determine whether or not it's a good source or if it has misleading information. Teaching students digital literacy and helping them to understand the difference between opinion or propaganda from legitimate, real information is integral.
  • Beauty Pageants Beauty pageants are presented with the angle that they empower women. However, putting women in a swimsuit on a stage while simultaneously judging them on how well they answer an impossible question in a short period of time is cruel and purely for the amusement of men. Therefore, we should stop televising beauty pageants.
  • Supporting More Women to Run for a Political Position In order to get more women into political positions, more women must run for office. There must be a grassroots effort to educate women on how to run for office, who among them should run, and support for a future candidate for getting started on a political career.

Our students can select a thesis research setting in basic science, clinical nutrition, or public health nutrition. We provide students with a list of available thesis mentors during the fall term and request that students do not seek a thesis mentor ahead of beginning the program. While your thesis proposal is critical during the earliest stages of your project, producing this document isn’t the first thing you should do.

Before you begin writing a thesis proposal, you’ll need to do some preliminary research and establish the basic premise of your content.

Writing a proposal will help to condense your research and narrow the scope of the project even further.

Your thesis proposal starts with outlining the materials you’ve gathered.

This is important, because the proposal is as much for your benefit as it is for the advisors and administrators overseeing your project.

Here are the items you’ll need before you try to create a thesis proposal:

  • Aim, scope, and basic questions. What is the goal of your thesis? What question, hypothesis, theme, or idea do you intend to test or examine?
  • Resources . Do you have the information you need in order to successfully complete this project? Is the body of research substantial enough to dive into your desired topic? Do you have access to the data, assets, or equipment you will need for this project to be viable?
  • Approach and methodology. How do you intend to answer your question or test your hypothesis? What methods will you use? What steps will you take? How will you accomplish your goals?
  • Timelines and costs. How long will it take to complete this project? How much will it cost? Who will cover the expenses?

Step 2. Defining a structure

In order to write your proposal, you need to understand the common structure of the document.

The typical parts of a thesis proposal are as follows.

1. Abstract

This is the outline or the summary of your work and research methodology.

2. Introduction

An introduction is what sets the stage for the rest of your paper. It puts the rest of your research and ideas in the correct context.

3. Existing literature/significant prior research

All of your ideas will be supported with research and other well-known literature.

This gives your work credibility, and helps you avoid accusations of plagiarism.

4. Thesis or project statement

Your thesis statement is a concise explanation of the argument made in your paper.

5. Approach

In this section, you’ll include a brief overview of how you plan to approach the topic and the research method used for your work.

Depending on your approach, you may also need to include information regarding costs, budget , and timelines.

6. Potential outcomes

In this section, you’ll outline what you expect to find through your research project .

7. Limitations

Every study comes with its own unique limitations or constraints which impact the results.

Outline these limitations, and explain how they could impact the findings in your proposal.

8. Contributions to knowledge

This is your opportunity to explain how your work will contribute to your field of study.

9. Proposed dissertation chapters

This section will include an outline of how you plan to write and format your dissertation .

While most thesis proposals follow this basic outline, be sure to check with your advisor and administrative team before you begin your draft.

Many schools offer templates for thesis proposals, and they may expect you to adhere to their predetermined formats.

If no such guidelines exist or you’re free to deviate any prescribed template, take the opportunity to tailor the format in a way that highlights the benefits of your proposal.

The best way to put together an organized thesis proposal is to determine how you will write it before you get started.

Many thesis proposals are rejected simply because students fail to plan their writing and instead try to hack everything together in a piecemeal approach.

Don’t let that happen to you.

Gather all the necessary information before you start writing, and stick to formats that highlight the value of your proposal.

The usual flow of writing a thesis proposal is as follows.

Start by coming up with a detailed description of the major points you’ll be making in your thesis.

2. Prepare visuals (if required)

If your thesis includes any visuals, like charts or tables, it can help to prepare these ahead of time.

This will help support the arguments made in your thesis.

3. Establish a methodology

In the methodology chapter, you’ll explain the approach you took while compiling your work.

This should explain the validity of your research and add credibility to your research.

4. Explanation of data

In this section, you’ll include an overview of the data you uncovered.

5. Draw conclusions

These rules have become more relaxed in recent years . Writing in the first person is more accepted in formal situations, particularly where the author’s point of view may have some impact on the outcome of the work.

This is also more common in some abstracts and introductory sections that are aimed at explaining the author’s goal rather than the nature of the project itself.

2. Do not proofread immediately after writing

Any writer will tell you that the best thing you can do when you complete a draft is to walk away from it for a while.

Giving yourself distance allows you to review your text with better impartiality.

3. Consult with colleagues first

Have peers and colleagues you trust review your material for errors and inconsistencies.

4. Use multiple spellcheckers and grammatical tools

5 helpful tips to write a better thesis

While thesis proposals aren’t particularly long, they can be complex.

The thesis itself is both long and complex!

Most master’s theses are several hundred pages long.

They are a full extrapolation of the ideas put forward in your thesis outline, broken down to a fundamental level that demonstrates your deep knowledge of your chosen topic.

At the time most students write their thesis, it is easily the longest and most extensive document they’ve ever written.

With that in mind, it’s no wonder that thesis writing is such a daunting task!

Fortunately, the skills and tips you learn from writing one can also be helpful in other academic documents, like a PhD dissertation proposal.

Before you start writing, here are five extra tips that can help to speed you on your way to a solid thesis.

1. Know the requirements

We mentioned this earlier regarding proposals, but the same rule applies for your actual thesis: Before you start writing your thesis, make sure you have all the necessary requirements in hand.

Review all the requirements for your thesis project with your advisors before you get started. Determine if there are any restrictions, minimum lengths, or formatting requirements that may have been overlooked.

There is a tremendous difference between a 200-page thesis formatted in a proportional font like Times New Roman or Calibri compared to a monospaced font like Courier or Courier New.

The same is true for spacing requirements and font sizes. Reaching 200 pages with a double-spaced layout is half the work compared to writing a single spaced document.

Make sure you have a firm grasp on the requirements before you start writing.

2. Constantly check your work

Much of your thesis work will entail editing and rewriting.

As you write, the editorial work will begin to pile up.

You can alleviate some of this pressure by handling some of the editorial work in between working on major sections of your thesis.

However, don’t fret too much over this. No matter how you plan everything out, you won’t have an exact understanding of how to implement some literary techniques (foreshadowing, allusion, etc.) and reference points (anchors, footnotes) until things are written down and you can look at everything collectively.

3. Don’t deviate from your primary goal

By design, your thesis has a theme or a focal point.

Even theses that are designed to explore a given theme or topic do so with a specific purpose in mind.

During your research, you may discover additional questions that should be answered.

Take a considered approach to those questions and discoveries. If this new information directly impacts your research or can be answered in tandem with your main goal, it may make sense to fold those observations and new objectives into your work.

However, you’ll never be able to answer every single question.

While those discoveries may provide you with a base for a separate body of work, what you find may have no bearing on the purpose of your thesis.

It’s usually best not to deviate from the primary goal of your paper.

But, if you choose to open up a new line of questioning, make every attempt to resolve it within the scope of your document.

4. Keep a list of references from the start

If you aren’t keeping track, it is very easy to accidentally omit a citation from your reference list.

The solution to this is simple: Keep a list of references and update it as you work. You can choose to format the list to your specific style guide (MLA, APA, etc.) immediately, or you can just keep a running list of sources and format everything at the end.

The important thing is that you have an always-updated list so that you know what sources are in your document and where those references are located.

Once you complete your final edits. Before you submit your thesis, triple check each and every reference on your list to ensure that your citations are accurate before you submit.

5. Take advantage of useful apps

There’s a lot that goes into writing a thesis proposal, and you need a way to stay organized and keep track of the various due dates.

Using a Gantt chart or a kanban board can help you organize the details of your project and manage the various due dates.

Several online platforms exist to help you track, manage, and organize your time. Apps that provide this functionality are also helpful when working as part of a research team.

A strong thesis statement should tell the reader:

  • What they’ll learn from your essay

The final thesis statement doesn’t just state your position, but summarizes your overall argument or the entire topic you’re going to explain. To strengthen a weak thesis statement, it can help to consider the broader context of your topic.

These examples are more specific and show that you’ll explore your topic in depth.

Innovation is the engine of growth but how does innovation unfold within firms and industries? Innovation often goes hand in hand with technological and demand uncertainty and typically recombines diverse knowledge domains and knowledge bases both of larger and small or young firms.

This project aims to investigate firms’ innovation strategies in the life science sector that best describe innovative activities’ challenges and opportunities. Bringing new drugs to market is in fact a long journey for firms operating in this industry, typically 8 to 10 years. There is therefore a high technological and demand uncertainty, with extensive costs, and risks that complicate even further the chances of translating R&D projects into commercialized drugs. Typically, only 22% of compounds that are tested in clinical trials conclude with a successful market launch (DiMasi et al., 2003) with enormous investments in the late clinical trials phases. On top of this, complementary assets play a key role in this industry, as shown by the recent race for the Covid-19 vaccines. Several heterogeneous parties ( e.g., pharmaceutical firms, small biotech startups, and research centers) engage in inter-organizational collaborations through alliances and M&A, which are expected to reach a collective value of more than 200US$ billion in 2023 (Pwc forecasts). The sector is also characterized by strong appropriability regimes that push firms to invest in R&D with blockbuster drugs generating annual sales of more than 1$ billion ( e.g., Lecanemab by Biogen and Eisai for Alzheimer). This sector, therefore, enables us to unfold intriguing competitive and collaborative dynamics in pursuing innovation activities among individuals, firms, markets, and institutions.

Students can rely on this empirical context to answer several intriguing research questions. To name a few:

  • Which type of players ( e.g., biotech startups, incumbent firms, universities) jump into a race for developing products into highly promising research trajectories?
  • What is the knowledge base of investing firms in a new market? In which market segment do they try to enter? What occurs to possible non-entrants?
  • What are possible factors affecting the firms’ investment timing in new product-markets? And what are possible consequences?
  • What factors affect firms’ decision to rely on external sources (complementary assets and other resource sourcing through alliances or acquisition) versus going solo in developing and/or manufacturing new products?
  • At which stage of the process do firms undertake collaborative agreements ( e.g., alliances, joint ventures), and with whom?
  • What are the effects of M&A on scientists and inventors?
  • What are the possible roles of research centers in establishing industry-science collaboration?

It is possible to rely on patent, publication, and project-level data to answer these questions. In particular, each firm owns a portfolio of patents – which provides rich information about the technologies these companies work on, the inventors and the countries where the invention is protected. Moreover, it is possible to leverage project-level data tracing over time the development of the product from the early phases to its commercialization, something that is very challenging to do in other industries. Publication data enrich even further the picture since typically scientists tend to publish the results of their research.

Nascent industries are characterized by high technology and demand uncertainty. The pre-commercialization period, known as incubation stage (Moeen and Agarwal, 2017), is typically characterized by intense experimentation where firms attempt to build the industry knowledge base. Following a trigger event ( e.g., scientific discoveries), investing firms try to resolve technological and demand uncertainty leading the industry to emerge (or not).

The emergence of the mRNA-based vaccine industry is a case in point useful to explore the dynamics of a nascent industry. The mRNA discovery dates back to 1960 when firms actually experimented with this technology not for Covid or Sars vaccine but for other diseases. Back in time, high production costs, demand, and technology uncertainty, restrain firms from exploiting immediately the mRNA technology preferring the adoption of other conventional techniques. The development and public procurement of mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccines provided firms with the right economic incentives to invest more heavily in this technique leading to the emergence of this industry with many pharmaceutical firms jumping into the race experimenting with the mRNA technique. Apart from the economic incentives that have facilitated the emergence of this industry, it is interesting to explore the trajectory that firms undertook to develop the mRNA vaccine for example whether and how they insource knowledge and complementary assets through different collaboration modes. This thesis aims to provide a systematic descriptive analysis of the Covid vaccine race using vaccine project data.

By analyzing this data, fascinating patterns can be uncovered ranging from firms’ innovation practices to competition among incumbents and startups, including firms’ collaboration trends (e.g., Mergers and Acquisitions, alliances).

Possible angles to explore (only indicative, do not feel restricted by these examples):

  • Which type of players joined the race for Covid-19 vaccine ( e.g., biotech startups, incumbent firms, universities)?
  • What type of technological trajectories ( e.g., mRNA, traditional techniques) did firms undertake to develop Covid-19 vaccines? What were the consequences?
  • To what extent have firms formed alliances or collaborate versus going solo in developing and/or manufacturing a Covid-19 vaccine?
  • At which stage of the process did firms enter into an alliance and with whom?
  • What were the main motivations for collaborating or acquiring other firms ( e.g., complementary asset, resource sourcing)?
  • Revise and advance the existing literature on nascent industries and firms’ innovation strategies
  • Draw from multiple secondary sources to develop a tailor-made database. Students will trace the strategic actions taken by investing firms that incurred in clinical trials for Covid-19 vaccines, both through mRNA-based and conventional techniques.
  • Use statistical and econometric techniques to investigate this topic

European Support Schemes and high-tech SMEs’ development: an empirical comparison with Venture Capital initiatives

High-tech SMEs often suffer from limited resources and legitimacy, while fore-fronting fundamental uncertainty about the outcome of their innovative activities. Entrepreneurs and their backers therefore seek ways to either become successfully viable and/or cash-out on their efforts. Sponsoring organizations, either public or private (e.g., Venture Capital), for-profit or not-for-profit (e.g., accelerators), can play an essential role in shaping the evolutive patterns of high-tech SMEs. First, they can improve their bargaining power. Second, they provide new resources or can marshal additional ones. Finally, sponsoring organizations lend SMEs a certification of quality, which lessens the effect of information asymmetry for potential acquirers. Therefore, the backing from sponsorship organization like VCs may play a crucial role in mitigating the hurdles high-tech SMEs face in M&A markets, for example by improving their valuations or avoiding forced premature sales. This project aims to empirically investigate the effect of sponsorship from various organizations on the Italian SMEs’ likelihood of successfully exiting via M&A or IPO. Various forms of sponsorship are considered, based on the types of organization, the extent and nature of the support provided, and certification effect. The student(s) interested in this thesis project will: • Review the literature on Venture Capital financing and supporting schemes. Explore the main features of Italian VC organizations, such as their categorization, main trends, and potential differences relative to the EU markets; • Contribute to the data collection efforts of an ongoing project, using sources like for example Lexis Nexis or Crunchbase; • Use statistical and/or econometric techniques to study the impact of VC certification/sponsorship role. Prior knowledge is not required.

These theses will be practice-oriented. The student(s) will work together with a university supervisor, the Observatory, and the companies linked to it. Examples of currently investigated topics are: • Analysis of the Italian Drones and Advanced Air Mobility market • Growth of Drones and Advanced Air Mobility firms in Italy • Sustainability of Advanced Air Mobility • Applications of these technologies in different sectors

Theses can be both quantitative and qualitative, analysing either database, case-studies, or interviews. Different thesis formats can be accommodated.

Gender in science matters: many scholars studied this field and observed women are typically disadvantaged, observing that gender affects innovation too. The student should review the literature on gender and innovation, specifically about patent activity. We suggest reviewing the literature by executing a systematic literature review. Our proposal aims to investigate whether gender affects men and women differently (or equally) in fields associated with their gender stereotypes. Moreover, to empirically investigate this issue, we propose to use the European Patent Office; the data are public and available online at https://www.epo.org/en. By the International Patent Classification (IPC), we will choose two or more fields to compare. For instance, the student can compare the field of computing, stereotypically associated with men, to the field of cosmetics, stereotypically associated with women [Computing; calculating or counting – Section G – class 06 – subclass Q; Specific use of cosmetics or similar toiletry preparations – Section A – class 61 – subclass Q].

Research at UW with the Economics Department can be pursued in various ways. One way is a student working on their own research inquiry with professor oversight. Another more elite track would be working with a professor on their research. A third way is through the Honors in the Major route within Economics. More information about Honors can be found below. Regardless of the path chosen, achieving top marks in advanced classes will help to obtain on-campus, competitive research opportunities. 

Bear in mind that, while research opportunities are incredible experiences that students successfully pursue, research is considered a supplementary benefit to an undergraduate education from UW-Madison. Research is not required, nor is it expected of any undergraduate graduating with an economics major.

This worksheet is designed to be a guideline for students to gauge their interest in research. Complete this worksheet and bring it to an advising appointment to discuss research with an advisor. Is Economics Research for Me?

Directed Study, sometimes called Independent Study, as described in the undergraduate catalog, “offers the student an opportunity to work with a faculty member on an individual study program. A student who is stimulated by a particular concept or problem encountered in a course can pursue and develop that interest in depth through a directed study project. Such individualized study can make a valuable contribution to a student’s educational experience. Directed study courses are made available by departments on the basis of a student’s preparation and motivation and a faculty member’s willingness to accept the student in such an endeavor.”

Directed Study allows advanced students to explore in-depth topics that are not covered in the regular economics course offerings. Your course may be structured to award one to three credits and, in most cases, will require writing a paper on your research and findings. These parameters will be established together with a supervising faculty member. 

Directed Study enrollment class options are: 

  • Economics 698 : credit/no credit grading (no GPA associated) 
  • Economics 699 : graded basis using A-F scale (included in GPA)

If you wish to pursue Directed Study or Thesis in Economics, you must:

  • Be a junior or senior student majoring in Economics.
  • Complete the intermediate courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics.
  • Prepare a research proposal and/or reading list, to use in discussion with an Economics Faculty member 
  • Obtain approval from a member of the Economics faculty to supervise your project. Ideally, this will be a faculty member with whom you are familiar and who has expertise related to your desired area of study.
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 in Economics coursework completed to date.
  • Review the department’s Directed Study form (below) and discuss your desire to do a directed study with an Economics Undergraduate Academic Advisor . The advising staff will create the course for you, allowing you then to enroll via standard university procedures if you receive permission from an Economics faculty member. 

Senior thesis or senior honors thesis students must follow these same enrollment instructions. However, your class enrollment options are: 

  • Econ 691-692 : full year thesis for non-Econ-honors students 
  • Econ 581 : one semester senior honors thesis. For EconME Honors students only 
  • Econ 681-682 : full year senior honors thesis. For EconME Honors students only

If you want to write a one semester thesis as a non-Econ-honors student, you will enroll in a Directed Study, 698 or 699. 

By participating in a directed study or senior thesis course, students consent to having their finished paper or project archived by the Economics Department and made available on request. Upon completion of the course, students must email a copy of their finished paper or project to [email protected] for this purpose.

Please note that these class options are intended to allow advanced academic exploration by independently motivated students. Directed Studies or Theses are not intended as a means to bolster deficiencies in credits or GPA, and it does not count toward fulfilling the department’s Core Econ Electives requirement.

Directed Study or Senior Thesis

Part of the Honors in the Economics Major curriculum will be a requirement for you to complete a senior honors thesis, prepared by a research tutorial economics class, your senior year. If you are interested in pursuing Economics with the Math Emphasis, have potential PhD in Economics ambitions, are interested in delving into research- Honors in the Major could be right for you! Please see our Curriculum, Courses, and Requirements page for class details. 

Curriculum, Courses & Requirements

Students can earn the Honors designation for the major in Economics if they follow the Math Emphasis track option. This is called Honors in the Major (HoM). 

To do so, all of the follow criteria must be met:

  • Econ 311 and Econ 312 have a Math 222 pre-requisite. Concurrent enrollment with Math 222 and one of these classes is not allowed.
  • Select and fulfill the requirements of the Economics with Mathematical Emphasis option. 
  • Attain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 in all courses in the major and an overall GPA of at least 3.3 in all courses taken at UW-Madison at the time of graduation.
  • Note: the pre-requisites of Econ 580 are: ( ECON 301  or  311 ), ( ECON 302  or  312 ), and  ECON 410 .
  • Concurrent enrollment of these pre-requisites with Econ 580 is not allowed.
  • Execute a capstone experience. Complete either (a) or (b):

Capstone Option A : Find an economics professor mentor and enroll in either Economics 581, Honors Thesis (one semester), or Economics 681 and Economics 682, Honors Thesis (two semesters). Note: Economics 580 must be taken prior to writing the Senior Honors Thesis.

I wrote my thesis in Scrivener and I absolutely love it and I've regularly conducted workshops for postgrad students on how to use Scrivener. So this is going to be a pretty quick video just to give you a basic overview. I used to blog about this. I've thought about making a course on it for ages, but hopefully this is enough to get you started. So I'm going to assume that you've watched the introduction to Scrivener video. I'm not going to show you all the basics. I'm going to show you how you can set it up to make it work for you for your thesis. So the first thing to do is to get a template and here I'm just going to go new project and we're just going to start with a blank one. I'm going to save it right on my desktop and we're just going to call it thesis draft and I always like to give a date to my things because it really helps if you're coming back to find something later. So I'm going to maximize this now. So the first thing we should probably do is change this title up here to thesis. Then I want to add a bunch of folders which are going to be my chapter folders. So I just do a few under there and I'm just renaming them by clicking straight on the folder as you can see. We probably don't need these two, I've probably gone a bit over so just move those ones to the trash. So then within our chapters of course we want some sections so we can add some new sections here. Now when I was getting set up I did like to try and structure my chapters fairly in similar sizes or similar structure so each chapter had an introduction and a conclusion and then just depending on what faculty or discipline you're from it will kind of depend how you rename these sections. So I'm just calling them concepts here but of course you can call them whatever you want. Main concept 2. So if you find a structure that you like you can also just duplicate that chapter. Now you can see here that it's just added numbers to it but again I could change this. Let's say I'm going to call this chapter 4. I like that structure and then I can just drag it down and reorder it. Actually I want it inside the thesis and so there I've duplicated that exact structure from chapter 1 into chapter 4 but I've just renamed it.

Graduate students are welcome to work with any of our peer tutors. Additionally, graduate students can receive assistance from the Writing Center's graduate writing consultant, whose office is located in ISUB 326. Sylvamo: Buy Thesis Remains Intact With Valuation Upsides + High Returns On Capital

Investment Update

Following my second buy rating on Sylvamo ( NYSE: SLVM ), the stock is +6% and provided ~400bps of alpha vs. the S&P 500 on a time-weighted basis. The overarching thesis on SLVM supporting its buy rating includes the following:

  • Reasonable valuations where the risk/reward opportunity is asymmetrically skewed to the upside. At ~10x earnings / 1.9x EV/IC, market multiples 1) have a high propensity for expansion but 2) have less scope for contraction beyond current levels [unless a complete change in the business performance occurs].
  • Management's attitude towards allocating capital, with ~$200mm set for allocation towards "high return projects" at the end of Q1 FY'24. It is rolling off capital as well (via debt service + NWC work through) and has shed gross debt by >40% since the spin-off.
  • The business repurchases high amounts of stock, therefore increasing our stake in a high-quality enterprise without any additional outlay of capital to do so. All cash that isn't serviceable internally, where $1 of earnings retained will fail to create >$1 intrinsic value, is returned to shareholders. Management is shareholder-oriented, in other words.
  • Valuations supportive up to $95 per share in base case assumptions, stretching above $200/share in the upside scenario with (i) less embedded risk [i.e. discount rate] and (ii) more aggressive growth targets.

Net-net, I reiterate SLVM as a buy with a price target range of $95-$97/share. This brief report will discuss all updates to modelling and assumptions, plus a breakdown of the company's latest quarter.

Q2 FY'24 Earnings Breakdown

SLVM put up Q2 revenues of $933mm (+150 bps YoY) and pulled this to adj. EBITDA of $164mm. Geographically, the business saw growth in Europe (+14%), and North America (+300bps) but saw a 100bps declining business in its Latin America domain. Management said that operating rates saw a short-term tailwind from 1) a large supplier converting ~400 bps of its uncoated free sheet capacity over to pulp during the quarter, and 2) A major European competitor mothballing a machine in Germany, thus reducing supply in Europe by c.500bps. There's no saying what long-term structural tailwinds these will provide, but in the near term, they are favourable for pricing in my view.

Moving down the P&L, it saw ~$26mm of price + mix improvement combined, and this was supported by a $8mm increase in volume for the quarter. This isn't out of the norm, as this business is quite cyclical and seasonality is highest in this part of the year. Management now expects $185mm adj. EBITDA for Q3, driven by a $15mm increase in volume at the upper end of the range. Critically, it won't see the same pricing tailwinds as Q2, but volumes should do enough to drive growth in my opinion. Moreover, operating costs are expected to lift by$10-$15mm, particularly as it works through downtimes in its main sites.

SLVM investor presentation

A central point of attractiveness for this name is the amount of capital that is returning to investors. SLVM raised its dividend by 50% to $0.45 per share in '24, and has re-purchased $30mm worth of its own stock this YTD. These are shareholder-friendly moves that add to the buy thesis in my opinion.

Finally, one of the most compelling factors from management is that it continues to eye off high-return projects to reinvest capital internally. When the business first spun off, it had ~$100mm of 'high-return' projects in its grasp. It has funded about $70mm of these so far and has another $200mm worth of " high return capital projects to invest in the coming years" . Per management's language on the call:

These projects are of varying sizes,, and are largely focused on our flagship mills providing us with opportunities to grow our earnings and cash flow. We expect such investments to generate well above cost of capital return.

Such language is exactly the kind of attitude I am looking for to fund our equity portfolios here at Bernard. I am specifically after management that can identify high-return investment opportunities to plough back funds into the business and grow the capital base (call this growth vs. sales growth, for instance). The capacity to produce high returns - that is, high incremental earnings - on these incremental investments is the secret source in my opinion. But the ability to retain and reinvest high sums of cash back into an existing operation is the key to compounding a company's market value at high rates of return at a given multiple. SLVM exhibits just that.

Therefore, my view of the company's quarter is that it was tremendously attractive and fits with a reiterated buy thesis.

Valuation Upsides Intact

The market pays attention to the economic value SLVM is producing and has awarded the company with higher valuation multiples over the last two years. The business now trades at. 1.9x EV/IC, up from a low of 1.2x in FY'23.

Critically, the market values SLVM management's capital allocation decisions highly, indicating they are of an intelligent nature and that management is a good steward of investor funds. Each dollar that has been reinvested back into the business since 2021 has been valued at $3.67 in the market, such that $340mm of capital reinvestment has produced $1.25Bn of additional enterprise value (Figure 4).

Valuation insights

  • My view is these trends in ROIC, reinvestment and capital growth can continue. My updated forward estimates (see: Appendix 1) illustrate the forward progression under steady-state assumptions. Here I am assuming the future (next 2-3yrs) is similar to the present for SLVM. As it rolls down debt + works through NWC, the business can reinvest ~12% of cash earnings p.a. in my view at the high rates of return management seeks, compounding to ~$90/share by FY'26E under these assumptions. The embedded expectations are still low in my opinion (~10x NOPAT, and I get to ~8x by FY'26E) meaning the propensity to surpass these expectations is high.
  • On the downside, contraction back to 1.6x EV/IC gets us to fair value today by FY'26E under these same assumptions. This is a ~15% margin of safety on the multiples side.

  • The discounted value of cash in present value terms under my base case assumptions shown in Appendix 1 sums to $97 per share - in line with my previous estimates of intrinsic value of this business. Here I am applying tremendously high-risk factors to these estimates - a capital charge of 12% on all cash producing assets - and discounting these at the opportunity cost of 12% as well. These are high parameters, and the business looks as if it can still grow its intrinsic at a statistically meaningful rate of return over the next 3 to 5 years. This supports a reiterated by rating.

Risks To Thesis

Key downside risks to the thesis include 1) negative revenue growth as this trumps the valuation, 2) management failing to redeploy funds at a rate of ~8% NOPAT at the min. for the same reasons, and 3) the space of macroeconomic factors that must be built into all investment reasoning right now, principally the risk of unforeseen rate changes or inflation prints, geopolitical risks and the spillover of commodity supply shocks on equity markets.

Investors must recognize these risks in full before proceeding any further.

SLVM remains a buy in my opinion due to 1) management's shareholder oriented attitude in returning capital to shareholders and seeking out high return investment opportunities by retaining and re-deploying freely available cash flows, and 2) valuations that support $95-$97 per share with high embedded risk factors and hurdle rates built into the economic modelling. I am after businesses that can retain and reinvest loads of cash at high rates of return, and do this on a persistent basis. This "persistence" is highly desirable, yet it is equally as rare. SLVM is in possession of these economic characteristics in my opinion. Reiterate buy.

The delay reminds investors of a critical but often forgotten risk of investing.

One of the most profound disappointments of the recent Super Micro Computer ( SMCI 0.69% ) earnings report came from an unexpected source. The disappointment did not come from the earnings release itself. That showed that the massive growth earned from selling servers containing Nvidia 's artificial intelligence (AI) chips had continued.

Instead, it began when short-seller research company Hindenburg Research released a report alleging accounting irregularities with Super Micro. Soon after, Super Micro announced that it would delay the release of its 10-K for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024 (ended June 30).

The stock fell 19% in the trading session following that delay. Even though it has regained some of that lost value, it leaves investors questioning whether they should continue to invest in the Super Micro growth story or stay away.

Making sense of the accounting issues

Admittedly, the gut reaction of dumping stock in this type of situation makes sense from a certain point of view. Such actions leave investors wondering about the extent of any restatements Super Micro makes. As of now, nobody knows whether any possible restatements will be relatively meaningless, or whether they will radically change Super Micro's investment thesis.

Indeed, this is difficult for me on a personal level. Considering its growth rate and potential for more growth, it became one of my favorite AI stocks . Hence, I bought shares when it became available at a more reasonable valuation.

Nonetheless, just days after I bought Super Micro stock, I am now compelled to question my own investing call and advise risk-averse investors to pass on Super Micro.

Additionally, the incident serves as a reminder of one critical reason why investing experts encourage diversification. Whenever shareholders invest in an individual stock, they face a remote but real possibility that the company has reported inaccurate numbers.

This does not mean investors should assume that Super Micro is the next Enron , or even that the delayed filing will uncover inaccuracies. However, diversifying does limit the damage investors can face from a potential accounting irregularity at one company, making it a safeguard all investors should consider.

The case for staying with Super Micro

When incorporating such protections, investors can also make a case for buying Super Micro right now, assuming they can tolerate the risk.

The most obvious benefit is the lower stock price. At around $385 per share as of this writing, it sells at a 68% discount from the $1,229 per share peak it set five months ago.

It also sells at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 19. Assuming the fiscal Q4 figures stand when Super Micro finally releases the 10-K, the 82% increase in net income from year-ago levels means that's a low multiple, considering its massive growth rate.

Moreover, despite the questions surrounding the upcoming 10-K report, Super Micro's rapid growth is likely genuine. After all, its partner Nvidia continues to report triple-digit revenue growth, primarily because of the popularity of its AI chips -- which often go into Super Micro's servers.

That growth will probably continue. Allied Market Research predicts a compound annual growth rate of 38% for the AI chip industry through 2032. In fiscal Q4, Super Micro reported 143% revenue growth, far ahead of the expected industry growth. Considering Super Micro's critical support role in the AI realm, the company should continue to exceed that growth rate for years to come.

Should I still invest in Super Micro stock?

At current levels, Super Micro stock looks like a buy -- if you can handle the risk.

Admittedly, the uncertainty surrounding Super Micro's filings should keep risk-averse investors out of the stock. More risk-tolerant investors should also avoid large Super Micro bets until it releases the delayed 10-K.

However, Super Micro stock sells at a very cheap valuation, and the industry growth trends driving the stock are not in doubt. Assuming the company can move on from this uncertainty, its stock could surge significantly higher from current levels.

Classical music is an intense environment — and one that makes for a rich cinematic setting . In the past few years alone, best picture lineups have featured movies that take place in this world, including Maestro and Tár . Measures for a Funeral explores some of these same themes — of sacrifice and devotion for the sake of art and the precision and passion required to be great in this high-pressure field — from a unique point of view, told not directly from the perspective of a conductor-composer but rather a thesis student who’s infatuated by one .

What Is 'Measures for a Funeral' About?

Sofia Bohdanowicz ’s film finds its protagonist in the form of Audrey Benac ( Deragh Campbell ), an academic who comes from a family of musicians. Her absent father was a highly accomplished fiddler, while her mother was a less successful violinist, constantly telling Audrey that giving birth to her ruined her career. Their relationship is, predictably, complicated because of that, and the film sees Audrey running from her mom despite the fact she is in hospice and doesn’t have much time left .

But while Audrey is running away from her mother, she is running toward another woman: 20th-century violinist Kathleen Parlow (voiced by Mary Margaret O’Hara ), who has been all but forgotten by time. She has a personal connection to this woman, as she served as her grandfather’s violin teacher, but even so, her interest in her borders on obsession — paralleling, in a way, Parlow’s own endlessly devoted relationship to music and music alone. Audrey travels from Toronto to London to Oslo to discover everything she can about her, reading her diaries, visiting her home, and even attempting to get an orchestra to stage concerto Opus 28, which was dedicated to Kathleen but thought to be burned out of existence decades ago after a poor reception, in order to hear her and gain a twisted kind of closure.

'Measures for a Funeral' Is a Visual and Musical Treat

Measures for a Funeral is predictably strong in the music department , the score infusing the film with a moody, ominous tone from the get-go. Extensive repetitive notes heighten the sense of tension and bring out the horror vibe lurking under the surface of the drama that’s constantly threatening to break free.

Visually, the film is stunning, too. The cinematography is crisp and consistent, defined by clean lines and symmetry that feels fitting for the formal and often stuffy setting it’s capturing. The color palette — somehow simultaneously cozy and disconcerting, vivid but dreary — enhances things as well. Some of the most intriguing shots give us insight into Audrey’s unwell state of mind, like when she mistakes a coffee spill for a pool of blood. On a craft level, Measures for a Funeral is remarkable . The entire film is a concert of sorts, and each shot is like looking at a breathtaking painting.

'Measures for a Funeral's Distance Makes It Difficult to Connect To

Unfortunately, the intentionally cold presentation makes it difficult to connect to Audrey . And while that’s the point — Audrey, after all, struggles to connect with the world around her, her emotions, and even her sense of self — the film can’t seem to overcome that hurdle and make us care about her another way. She’s not particularly likable or unlikable , sympathetic or unsympathetic. She’s just not that interesting at all. Campbell doesn’t give a bad performance, but the nature of the part demands that she stay an expressionless blank slate pretty much the whole time. Don’t kill me for the comparison, but it reminds me of Kristen Stewart in Twilight — they’re embodying the role well; it’s just a shame that the role itself reads bland onscreen.

That the film sits at nearly two-and-a-half hours doesn’t help matters. There’s nothing wrong with a long movie if it earns it , but Measures for a Funeral doesn’t really get started until about 70 minutes in , once Audrey becomes determined to stage the opus. The first hour plays out like a dry documentary with drawn-out, redundant monologues from Parlow’s letters and characters infodumping what they know about the woman to each other. At one point, we see an archivist teach Audrey about the history of sounds — something that’s fascinating in theory but plays out like a dull humanities lecture. At times, the film plays less like a feature and more like an audiobook of a biography about Parlow’s life, with a few visuals thrown in for good measure.

The characters never feel like real people, and that’s especially true with the dialogue, which is somehow overly pretentious and sophomorically direct. The characters often speak as they would in a Yorgos Lanthimos film but without the absurd creativity or wicked humor to make it effective. Themes of what it takes to be a genius — and society’s tendency to revere men who dominate their craft while disposing of women who excel — are timeless, but Measures for a Funeral ’s discussions of this are frequently grating and eye-roll-inducing. The film takes itself too seriously and has an inflated sense of self-importance that’s off-putting and rings false.

It’s especially frustrating considering there is a compelling movie hiding in here if it would just allow itself to let loose by leaning into the psychological thriller elements it teases throughout but never fully commits to or cuts back on the overindulgent details that keep the pace at an agonizing crawl. Measures for a Funeral is brimming with style and painstakingly researched, but the fact Bohdanowicz seems to insist on showcasing every tiny detail she discovered at the sacrifice of making a leaner, more focused, and riveting story causes a dissonance that makes it feel dead on arrival.

While 'Measures for a Funeral' is a technical feat, its plot and characters leave much to be desired.

  • The cinematography is stunning, enhancing the film's stiff and uneasy tone.
  • The distance put between us and the protagonist makes it difficult to connect with and invest in her story.
  • The film doesn't earn its runtime, indulging in too many unnecessary details and moving at a sluggish pace.
