Introducing Party Chat Speech Transcription and Synthesis

We strive to make Xbox the most inclusive gaming platform on the planet, and a key part of this journey is introducing more accessible experiences for our players.

Although we already offer game transcription for converting in-game player speech to text and reading chat text that you type to other players aloud, we knew there were opportunities to improve.

That’s why we’re excited to share a new feature available to Insiders today! Xbox Party Chat, used by tens of millions of gamers for voice & text chat, will now support transcribing speech into text and synthesis of speech from text.

By enabling speech-to-text transcription, you can have all words spoken by the people in the party converted into text that will be displayed in an adjustable overlay on top of gameplay.

By enabling text-to-speech synthesis, you can type into Party Text Chat and have that read by a synthetic voice to the rest of the people in the party (with a choice of several voices per language).

Either one of these features (or both working together) can be used to help gamers who are deaf or hard of hearing and/or cannot or choose not to speak to participate in Xbox Party Chat without special accommodation from others in the party. They are also generally useful for detecting microphone problems or distinguishing game audio from people in the party talking!

How to turn Party Chat Speech Transcript and Synthesis On

Both speech-to-text and text-to-speech functionality can be enabled in Settings under Ease of Access > Game and chat transcription. When in a party, you can also access this settings page under Options > Configure Ease of Access settings.

Xbox is testing accessible chat options like transcription and speech synthesis

It's available to insiders now.

Microsoft has announced new text-to-speech and speech-to-text features for Xbox Party Chat, which aim to help make communication on the platform more accessible. The features are currently being tested through the Xbox Insider program.

The speech-to-text feature puts a window on the screen with automatic transcriptions of what people in the voice chat are saying, along with an indicator of whether the message was typed or spoken aloud. This could help people who are hard of hearing to participate in the chat, even if the other participants are speaking instead of typing.

The window in the top right shows transcribed text from voice chat.

The text-to-speech feature goes the other way, reading out a user’s typed messages for the rest of the party chat members to hear. The user is also able to choose from a list of voices to better customize what their messages sound like to others.

Microsoft has recently been pushing accessibility with Xbox: it started a program earlier this year to help developers make their games more accessible, and it has made the Xbox Adaptive Controller to help gamers with a wide range of motor abilities. It’s good to see them continuing that work, especially around voice chat.

If you’re an Xbox Insider, you can enable the features by going to Settings > Ease of Access > Game and chat transcription, or by going to Options > Ease of Access settings while in a chat.

Microsoft is testing Xbox party chat accessibility features

Speech transcription and text-to-speech are now available for xbox insiders..

Microsoft has announced that speech transcription and text-to-speech synthesis is coming to Xbox party chat , starting today for Xbox Insiders. The new features will make it easier for players with hearing or speech difficulties to participate in party chat and are part of an Xbox initiative to improve accessibility.

Both features can be found in the "ease of access" tab under "game and chat transcription." With speech-to-text transcription, words spoken in a party are converted into text displayed in an adjustable overlay, as shown above. With text-to-speech enabled, anything you type into party text chat will be ready by a synthetic voice to the rest of the party, with a choice of several voices per language.

Both speech-to-text and text-to-speech have been available for in-game transcription since 2017 . At the time, Microsoft was the first major console-maker to implement a real-time chat transcription service. As with in-game transcription, the party chat version is primarily designed for accessibility, but could also be used if you don’t want to listen to audio or have difficulty understanding someone.

Text to speech for Xbox

Featured In

Table of contents, how text to speech works on an xbox, enabling text to speech on your xbox, how tts can improve your xbox experience, using speechify to improve your overall gaming experience.

Your Xbox device comes with an option to turn text into speech, or vice versa, and make gaming a lot easier. Learn more about text-to-speech options with your Xbox below.

It’s now 20 years since the first Xbox came out. Today, in 2022, the Series X hardware is so powerful that it runs even the neediest games in terms of system requirements without any hassle. And with exclusives like the Halo or Forza Horizon titles, it’s safe to say that gamers have an easy choice when it comes to choosing the best gaming platform.

Nevertheless, Microsoft’s gaming console isn’t the leading gaming device just because it can run games better than its competitors. Yep! We’re talking about Sony PlayStation. It also isn’t the alpha dog due to its exclusive Xbox games. It’s the best because of accessibility options for players with disabilities. For example, dyslexics or those with ADHD , among others.

But how so, you might ask. Well, your Xbox device comes with an option to turn text into speech, or vice versa, and make gaming a lot easier. In other words, you can hear everything that’s written on your screen or read voice chat transcriptions of both game and party conversations.

Yet, not many gamers are aware of these transcription options on the mentioned console. They only consider its superior functionality as the reason to use it for gaming. This is why we’ll explain how to turn it on, as well as mention some other alternatives to improve gaming for everyone in need of the read-aloud feature.

The three of the latest Microsoft gaming consoles (Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X) all have options to turn text into speech (TTS) and speech into text (STT). These options are divided into two separate features — game transcription and chat transcription.

Game transcription allows players to turn in-game speech into text, as well as what you type into speech for your co-players to hear. On the other hand, chat transcription exclusively works for chatting with other players. It does both text-to-speech and speech-into-text.

Once again, you must have one of the mentioned Xbox devices to use this new feature. If you have one, you can easily turn the TTS or STT options on. So, let's now see how to enable these accessibility features on your gaming console, shall we?

  • First, take your controller and press the Xbox button.
  • Choose Profile & System, then Settings, then Accessibility, and afterward go to the Game and Chat Transcription option.
  • If you want to turn what other players are saying to each other into text, just select the Speech-to-Text checkbox.
  • On the other hand, if you want the opposite, simply check the Text-to-Speech option. By doing so, the console will read aloud what is written in the party text chat.
  • To select different voices, select the In-game Chat Voice menu.
  • You can also make your console read certain in-game words that appear on the screen by selecting the Let Games Read to Me option.

It’s safe to say that text-to-speech transcription technology is a literal game changer. It finally allows everyone to have the same experience while playing their favorite video games. And when we say everyone, we mean people who have trouble reading due to various reasons. Many of them are dyslexics who can’t comprehend written words fast enough.

But people with dyslexia are not the only ones. People with ADHD can also benefit hugely from TTS technology, as well as those who are deaf. However, the latter don’t use the text-to-speech option. They instead go for the opposite, as they select speech-to-text so that they can read what others are saying in-game as well as in the Xbox party chat.

Nevertheless, TTS tools aren’t just for people with hearing and reading problems. They are also useful for average gamers. The thing is, it’s tiresome to constantly change your focus from gameplay to the chat dialogue box and read what co-players are typing. It affects your game progress, and it’s irritating if it’s an unimportant message, like most of them are.

Luckily, with the speech synthesis option on, you won’t need to read everything your co-players are typing. The AI synthetic voice will do that for you. Of course, it might have some issues with typos and grammatical errors, but it will still get the job done. It might also lead to funny situations that will leave you and your friends laughing out loud for hours.

Text-to-speech tools are also worth it because of the entertainment value they provide. Namely, you can fiddle with tone controls and choose various voices to mimic certain characters and friends, or generally just create bizarre sounds for fun. It’s what many players are into, as it adds a healthy dose of laughter to their all-serious in-game encounters.

If you’re a gamer who wants to try TTS technology without an Xbox — you can still do it. The answer is Speechify. This is the world’s number one text transcription app. It uses the latest optical character recognition (OCR) technology, machine learning, and advanced artificial intelligence to turn written words into speech.

Speechify is available across all platforms. You can use it on your iOS (iPhone) or Android device (e.g., Samsung smartphone) as a mobile app. But for serious gaming, you’ll need to run Speechify on your PC. Luckily, it’s also easy to download. All you need to do is add the plug-in for your Google Chrome web browser , and voilà.

Once you download the Speechify app, the next step is to sign-up as a user . Of course, it’s also possible to use it for free for 3 days. But to get the most out of Speechify’s text-to-speech feature, it’s best to become a yearly subscriber . It allows you to use the app to its fullest potential, changing AI voices, tone, and reading speed, among other options.

When it comes to gaming, you can use Speechify to turn text into speech on all popular communication apps like Twitch, Discord , and others. With it, you can fully focus on multiplayer gameplay without reading in the middle of an important action or set-piece scene. All you need to do is leave Speechify running in the background.

Why does my Xbox have text-to-speech?

Xbox party chat now supports transcribing speech into text and synthesis of speech from text, features which can be used to aid players who are deaf or have trouble hearing and/or cannot or choose not to speak.

June Xbox Update: Party Chat Accessibility, Xbox App Official Posts, and More

The latest update for Xbox brings new speech-to-text transcription and text-to-speech synthesis tools, improved parental control and more.

Microsoft has just dropped the June update for Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S. This month’s update includes speech to text and text to speed features for Party Chat, improved parental control for kids accounts, official posts in the Xbox app, and more.

Two new accessibility features — speech-to-text transcription and text-to-speech synthesis — are the main highlights of the update. Both features were available to Xbox Insiders since May, but now they’re finally graduating to the stable channel . As the name suggests, speech-to-text transcription converts spoken words into text and displays them on an adjustable overlay. Meanwhile, with text-to-speech synthesis, a synthetic voice will read out loud text chats from your friends in Party Chat. Both these features can be found under Ease of Access > Game and chat transcription . You can also access them when you're in a Party Chat by navigating Options > Configure Ease of Access settings .

Speech-to-Text: By enabling speech-to-text transcription, gamers can have all words spoken by the people in a party converted into text that’s displayed in an adjustable overlay on top of gameplay.
Text-to-Speech: By enabling text-to-speech synthesis, gamers can type into party text chat and have that read by a synthetic voice to the rest of the people in the party (with a choice of several voices per language).

The new update also adds a new “Move groups” button in the Xbox Guide, which allows you to customize the order of your groups. Elsewhere, the update also brings improved parental control over kids' accounts. Xbox child accounts can now ask for their parent’s permission to play with people on other game platforms and devices. Parents can approve or deny these requests using the Xbox Family Settings app or straight from the console itself.

Finally, the Xbox app for Android and iOS will soon start showing official posts from game publishers and Xbox. As you can see in the screenshots above, posts will be shown in Instagram Story-like format and will appear in a horizontally scrolling carousel on the homepage. They will also have the option to like, share and comment.

How to enable Game Chat Transcription on Xbox One and Windows 10

I play Gears of War with a couple of friends, and they all belong to different countries. Many a time we miss what others are saying because of our accent. Sometimes it is because of the sound effects of the game.  If that’s the case with you, you can enable the Game Chat transcription feature on Xbox One and Windows 10. It converts in-game player speech to text that you can read on the screen. It can also read the chat text that you type to other players aloud.

This feature allows speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities, offering a new way to communicate that creates a more accessible and inclusive gaming experience for everyone. I had used it with Kinect, and it picks up pretty well. And it can pick up any voice so be careful. Game Chat Transcription works in two ways:

  • Speech-to-text provides the ability to convert all player’s voice communications in the game chat into text. The players using this feature can read the text on their screen in real-time.
  • Text-to-speech provides the ability for players using this feature to have their typed text spoken aloud to other players in the game.

Turning on Game Chat Transcription feature

On Xbox One

  • Open the Xbox Guide by pressing the guide button on the controller.
  • Go to Settings > All settings > Ease of Access > Game chat transcription .
  • To transcribe other players’ voices into text, select Speech-to-text  on
  • Select Text-to-speech to have your chat text read aloud to other players
  • To choose the voice that other players will hear when your chat text is read aloud, select one of the available voices in the Text-to-speech voice menu.

On a Windows 10 PC

  • Open the Xbox app and go to Settings > General > Game chat transcription .
  • To transcribe other players’ voices into text, select Speech-to-text .
  • To have your chat text read aloud to other players, select Text-to-speech .

You will have to make sure everyone has their privacy communications settings set to Everybody . If it is only set to known friends, then others will not be able to see it. That said, it works, but it can misspell at times. It depends on how well it picks up your voice, so using a headset is the best for transcript feature. Also, the game has to support this feature to work. So if you don’t see it on your game, it’s probably not supported.

The Game Chat Transcription is an accessibility feature, hence found in Ease of Access , and not in the Gaming Settings. However, this new feature will benefit gamers more than anyone else. Players wouldn’t have to take the stress of typing while gaming, they can speak out loud, and this feature will convert their voice to text. So, could this be the new way of gaming? Let us know below.

Xbox Chat Party Gains Text-to-Speech Transcription in Preview

Users of Xbox Chat Party on Microsoft’s Xbox One, Series X, and Series S consoles can also now get speech-to-text support.

Luke Jones

Microsoft is making Xbox consoles more accessible for all users, including those with hearing and speech problems. According to the company, Xbox Party Chat for Xbox One , Xbox Series X , and Xbox Series S now has speech-to-text and text-to-speech transcription.

The new support is currently only available for Xbox Insiders for testing. It expands on the Party Chat feature Microsoft launched back in 2017. Party Chat gives gamers on Xbox consoles the ability to communicate with other players through text and voice.

By adding text-to-speech, everything written in the Party Chat will be converted to speech, helping vision impaired users. As for speech-to-text, everything said through voice in the chat will be converted into text to help hearing impaired users.

In a blog post , the Xbox team explains the benefits of the new support:

“Either one of these features (or both working together) can be used to help gamers who are deaf or hard of hearing and/or cannot or choose not to speak to participate in Xbox Party Chat without special accommodation from others in the party. They are also generally useful for detecting microphone problems or distinguishing game audio from people in the party talking!”

Setting it Up

Setting up text-to-speech and speech-to-text is easy. Users can visit the Settings menu on their Xbox consoles and select “Ease of Access”. In the Game option choose “chat transcription”. Another method is to click the options within the Chat Party.

If you're an Xbox Insider, let us know how the new transcription features work in Chat Party.

Tip of the day:

To prevent attackers from capturing your password, Secure Sign-in asks the user to perform a physical action that activates the sign-in screen. In some cases, this is a dedicated “Windows Security” button, but the most common case in Windows 10 is the Ctrl+Alt Del hotkey. In our tutorial, we show you how to activate this feature.

Xbox June Update adds speech-to-text for Party Chat accessibility, app improvements, and more

Monthly additions to an already great experience.

Xbox June 2021 Update Image

What you need to know

  • Xbox typically updates its OS every month with new features, fixes, and improvements for the Xbox community.
  • The Xbox June Update is officially rolling out for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, with a handful of neat additions.
  • The headlining feature is a major accessibility improvement: speech-to-text and text-to-speech for Xbox Party Chat.
  • The Xbox mobile app now supports official game posts, groups can be reordered in the Xbox Guide, and Xbox Family Settings gains another improvement.

The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are already great consoles as they are right now, but Xbox still releases near-monthly OS updates to improve them further. Even aging Xbox One consoles get some love, and benefit from most of the same new features that come to Xbox Series X|S. Last month's decent-sized Xbox May Update is being followed by today's more modest Xbox June Update , which still includes a very important accessibility addition. It may take a while for the Xbox June Update to become available to everyone, but you should see it appear on your console soon.

Xbox June 2021 Update Image

Source: Xbox

The highlights of the Xbox June Update includes:

  • Speech-to-text allows players to transcribe everything they're saying (and everything the other party members are saying) into a live text feed that appears on screen. Think of this as auto-captions, but for your Party Chats
  • Text-to-speech, conversely, allows players to type text into the Party Chat and have it be transcribed into speech by AI and spoken through the Party Chat to other members
  • Reorder groups in Guide . Players have been able to quickly navigate to custom groups through the Xbox Guide for a while, but they don't offer the same level of customization that the Dashboard does. Now, a new "Move groups" button allows you to rearrange the order of groups in the Xbox Guide.
  • Official posts in Xbox app . The Xbox mobile app has improved significantly since its initial redesign, and this month is no different. Players will be able to see official posts from Xbox and games straight from the Xbox app, with the ability to like, comment, and share all baked in.
  • Xbox Family Settings improvements . The Xbox Family Settings app is becoming an even more complete solution for parental controls on Xbox. Children can now ask for permission to play with friends from other platforms or devices, and parents can approve those requests on a case-by-case basic, straight from the Xbox Family Settings app.

The headlining feature of the Xbox June Update is absolutely to the improvements to Xbox Party Chat, which will likely be wonderful features to many players, including myself. It's great to see Microsoft deliver on the promises they made on Global Accessibility Awareness Day . With speech-to-text and text-to-speech features now baked in, more players around the world will be able to experience some of the best Xbox games while playing with friends in a Party.
