Seat Map Implementation: How Airlines and OTAs Integrate Seating Functionality

Understanding seat inventory control and distribution

How airlines distribute seat information, communication methods.

An example of an EDI message with translation

  • Lufthansa Open API returns seat maps for a chosen cabin class. Each seat has a set of characteristics indicating its location in relation to other cabin items such as lavatories and exits. Unfortunately, sometimes not all classes are available for every flight and seat rows might be missing or not displayed. Still, Lufthansa provides detailed charts of their whole fleet to allow you to create accurate seat maps.
  • Singapore Airlines Seat Selection API has a feature for retrieving set maps and seat assigning after booking. Just like with Lufthansa, you send a request with flight information and class and receive seat maps that are returned with availability status and other characteristics.
  • Duffel is a flight data aggregator that provides OTAs with booking capabilities for 74 airlines, including access to their seat map schemas. Although this becomes available for a hefty price of $1 per order, Duffel is like a more advanced and user-friendly GDS that works with most of the carriers you might wish for: KLM, Delta, American Airlines, easyJet, SAS, and many many more. Duffel returns a list of seat maps per segment and seat selection functionality is available during the order creation, not after it.
  • Gordian is a similar platform, but it’s focused mostly on ancillaries like seat selection and baggage. Actually, Priceline, Kiwi, and Hopper among the others are using Gordian to access this data. To sell ancillaries to its 90 partner airlines, you can use a customizable widget or an API.

Gordian Dynamic Upsell widget

  • Amadeus SeatMap Display API provides information about aircraft cabin layout, in-flight amenities, seat availability, and pricing. You can retrieve this data at different stages of the flight booking process: after the booking and during it.
  • Sabre Get Seats API displays flight seat maps, seat locations, facilities, information about non-chargeable seats, availability information, and pricing.
  • Travelport Seats API is a part of their early adopter program and can also be requested for the existing order or before the booking is completed. It returns pricing, aircraft layout, seat availability, seat location and characteristics.

Seat map UX best practices

  • have specific preferences, such as sitting by the window or closer to the lavatory,
  • travel with a group and need control over who sits where,
  • travel frequently and know what to expect from the experience on a particular route.
  • They hunt for the cheapest fare and don’t care about the extras.
  • They travel alone and don’t care where they sit.
  • They plan to be early for check-in and get good seats.
  • They forget to select a seat.

Provide visual cues . Booked, available, and picked seats as well as lower and upper decks must be colored accordingly but remember to provide icons and text as well. This example from Ryanair shows seats on sale and extra legroom seats with a convenient key on the side.

Airline seat selection fees should be banned. Until then, here's how to avoid them

Airline seat selection fees are one of the most hated surcharges in the travel industry – and they should be illegal.

It costs an airline nothing to reserve your seat. Yet passengers shell out anywhere from $25 to more than $100 for a confirmed seat assignment or to sit next to their friends and family.

If the Fair Fees Act proposed by Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., passes, then seat selection fees would fly away. The law prohibits airlines from imposing fees that are not reasonable and proportional to the costs it incurs.

But airlines really went too far when they began charging families with young children for seat assignments, sometimes even suggesting parents could be separated from their kids if they didn't pay. Earlier this year, the Department of Transportation threatened to create a new regulation to allow families to sit together on flights .

Check out  Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

"Airlines can’t just treat a child like a piece of baggage," President Joe Biden said in a recent press conference announcing airline policy changes .

But these proposals will not help you this summer. And even if they did, they would exclude some passengers, including travelers with older kids who might still need to sit near an adult, passengers with special needs, honeymooning couples, BFFs, and … the list goes on.

How do they avoid paying more for adjacent seats? And are there any new ways of avoiding seat selection fees?

Don't do it: No, you shouldn't recline your seat on planes. Here's why.

Should babies, smelly passengers be on a no-fly list? Dealing with difficult air travelers

What is an airline seat selection fee?

A seat selection fee allows you to reserve a seat in your class of service. Each airline ticket comes with a confirmed seat, but if you want to choose your seat location, most domestic airlines will charge an additional fee.

These extras are not new. Airlines started to experiment with seat selection fees in 2008, and they caught on a decade later. What is new is that the fees are rising, sometimes increasing the cost of a ticket by hundreds of dollars. Last year, U.S. airlines collected $4.2 billion in seat assignment fees .

How do you avoid a seat selection fee?

If you're traveling with a group, the best way to avoid a seat selection fee is to book your seats at the same time. If the airline is assigning seats for you, it typically seats people under the same record locator number together. With added government pressure on the airlines, it's unlikely they will intentionally separate a family – and if they accidentally do, they will find a way of undoing it.

Seat selection fees are a mind game. If you're booking your flights online, you'll face pop-ups and screens that try to convince you that you need to pay more to upgrade your travel experience. Just say "no." Within 24 hours of your departure, the airline will assign you a seat. Pro tip: If you want to avoid paying for a seat assignment, arrive at the airport early. That way, you'll have the pick of the unassigned seats.

Chaos at the airport! Pro strategies for surviving the next air travel meltdown

AI, self-service are taking over travel. Will everything become a DIY experience?

New strategies for sitting together on a flight

There are some lesser-known travel hacks that will let you find a seat together.

◾ Find two seats together : ExpertFlyer , a subscription service for frequent fliers, has a service called Seat Alerts with an "Any Two Seats Together" option that monitors airline seat maps and can tell you if two seats together become available.

"If you need more seats, you can also create a seat alert for specific seats around the seats you already have assigned in case one of them opens up," said Chris Lopinto, founder of ExpertFlyer. Then you can claim both seats, but you may have to pay extra.

◾ Be last to board : Here's another tip I've heard from several travelers, but it only works if the flight isn't full and you don't have a lot of carry-on luggage. First, find out if it's a full flight by looking at the seat map online or asking a gate agent. Then wait until the last person has boarded and look for two empty seats in your class of service.

◾ Ask another passenger to switch : Asking a passenger to swap seats so your traveling companion can sit next to you can be problematic because many passengers have paid extra for their seats. Kate Zuckerman, CEO of Thrive Family Travel, which provides travel coaching services for families, said there's a right way to trade seats.

"Try to offer them something of value, such as a coveted aisle placement instead of a mediocre middle seat, or a seat closer to the front of the plane," she says.

Other travelers have offered gifts, snacks, or even cash. Zuckerman said she usually finds someone who will volunteer to give up their seat. And she pays it forward. When she travels solo, she's always the first to trade seats with someone who wants to sit next to a friend or family member.

Refunds: Why are travel refunds taking so long now? Here are some tips to get your money back.

Passports: Waited too long to get a passport? Here's what to do.

Should you ask a gate agent for a better seat?

Asking a gate agent for a seat next to your sweetheart may be a waste of time. Karen Villano, a gate agent for a major airline, said airlines always pressure the airport staff to collect money in exchange for a better seat, even if it's just a window seat or emergency exit row in economy class.

"If I change your seat to a paid seat without collecting money, the company is alerted," she said. "It goes on my permanent record of not complying with company policy."

Villano says airlines will waive their collect-money-at-all-costs rule for any family with a young child. But anyone else will have to pay for a better seat. The real opportunities to switch come after you've boarded the flight.

Wait, do you really have to sit together?

Airlines have been cashing in on passengers' desire to sit together for years. But before you try to beg a gate agent for a seat next to your companion or bribe a fellow passenger to swap seats, ask yourself: Do we really need to sit together?

If the answer is yes, chances are the crew will find a way to make it happen. A single mom with twins. Grandpa, who has dementia, flying with a caretaker. As eager as airlines are to collect more seat fees from you, they will not allow passengers in situations like this to be separated.

For the rest of us, the answer might be "no." If you're on vacation, you'll spend a lot of time together once you arrive. If you're traveling with your spouse, you might need the break. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a little alone time to enjoy your flight.

What if? What if summer travel isn't as hectic as expected? Why last-minute plans could work out.

The days of charging seat selection fees are numbered

Airline seat selection fees represent everything that is wrong with the airline industry. Airlines took away your ability to reserve a seat next to a family member or loved one and then started charging you extra for it. It costs airlines nothing to reserve a seat, but now they're making billions a year from it.

When passengers try to book seats together this summer, they'll see seat assignment fees for what they are – pure airline greed. And now, finally, the government is going to put an end to these unconscionable surcharges.

How Trump's conviction could change the dynamics of the 2024 race

By Olivia Rinaldi , Jacob Rosen , Katrina Kaufman

Updated on: May 31, 2024 / 11:57 AM EDT / CBS News

Former President Donald Trump has been found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in his Manhattan criminal trial, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already unprecedented campaign.

As a c onvicted felon , Trump is not prevented from continuing to campaign for president , since the Constitution does not prohibit candidates from running for president even if they are convicted of a crime. In fact, there is precedent for a candidate running from behind bars: In 1920, Socialist Party candidate Eugene V. Debs ran for president from a federal penitentiary in Atlanta.

Trump is the first former U.S. president to be found guilty of felonies, and the first major party candidate to run for office after being found guilty of a crime. Here's how his conviction could change the 2024 campaign:

How Trump can campaign after his conviction

Now that he's convicted, Trump is all but certain to appeal the decision handed down by the jury, and he is likely to be able to return to the campaign trail as the process plays out.

The next development in the case will come at sentencing, currently scheduled for July 11. Justice Juan Merchan has wide discretion over when sentencing occurs and what the punishment looks like. Trump faces a maximum of up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine for each of the 34 felony charges of falsification of business records. The sentencing options available to Merchan include prison, probation, conditional discharge, fines or house arrest.

The judge could put limitations on his travel, such as restricting Trump from leaving the state and taking his passport, but Merchan has said he doesn't want to interfere with his ability to campaign.

"I would think that the judge wouldn't dare interfere with his right to speak to the American public because it's the right of the voters to be informed as well," said John Coffee, a professor at Columbia Law School and an expert on corporate governance and white collar crime.

In a recent survey of dozens of cases brought by Manhattan District Attorney's Office in which falsifying business records was the most serious charge at arraignment, attorney and author Norm Eisen found that roughly one in 10 of those cases resulted in a sentence of incarceration.

"I think that is fascinating," said Caroline Polisi, a criminal defense attorney and professor at Columbia Law School. "A lot of commentators say the reason he won't be incarcerated is because the logistics of it with respect to the Secret Service would be too much. On the other hand, if you're saying he should be treated like any other defendant, we have a lot of data saying that 90% of other defendants would not get jail time in this situation."

The impact of the conviction on Trump's ability to campaign could largely hinge on what sentence Merchan ultimately hands down, and when Trump would serve it.

"In the context in which he is found guilty and then sentenced to no jail time, I don't think it's going to cause a bit of difference," added Polisi. "There might be some minor issues. He might not be able to vote for himself. But other than that, I don't think it's going to cause any problems."

When determining Trump's sentence, the judge could take into account his numerous gag order violations — which led Merchan to threaten him with jail time if the violations continued — and his lack of demonstrated remorse or respect for the legal system. Throughout the trial, Trump referred to Merchan as "conflicted" and "corrupt" and to the case itself as a "sham."

"In New York, a 78-year-old defendant, who's a first time offender, committed a non-violent offense, and has an otherwise, well, distinguished record — in some regards being an ex-president is distinguished. In that kind of world, there'd be no chance of an incarceration sentence," said Coffee. Trump turns 78 on June 14. "They can use probation, they can use fines. But there may be a view of many judges that you have to show that no one's above the law, and even the future president should have a taste of prison."

Even if Merchan does order Trump to serve time behind bars, the sentence could be deferred until his appeal has run its course.

"In other cases, when you don't have someone running for the White House, it would be more or acceptable to put him immediately into incarceration," said Coffee. "You certainly could put special conditions on what he could do or put him under house arrest, but I think until we get to the actual election, we're going to have to let Donald Trump run around and campaign."

The conviction's possible impact on Trump's poll numbers and support

Trump has predicted that a conviction in this trial could boost his poll numbers.

"Even if convicted, I think that it has absolutely no impact. It may drive the numbers up, but we don't want that. We want to have a fair verdict," Trump told CBS Pittsburgh in an interview earlier this month.

Trump's support among his Republican base has been remarkably resilient in the face of his various criminal cases. In the months following his four indictments last year, Trump maintained his commanding lead in the Republican primary, capturing the nomination despite the dozens of criminal charges he faced.

Many Trump supporters who CBS News has interviewed since the trial began have said a guilty conviction will not change how they vote in November, adopting the former president's grievances as their own.

"Stormy Daniels has already been reviewed and stuff. It's kind of coincidental," Michigan resident Lori Beyer said at a recent rally in Freeland, Michigan, adding she would vote for Trump regardless of the conviction. "I don't think it's going to impact it, as far as I'm concerned."

Whether a conviction changes the minds of voters who are not committed to the former president remains to be seen. A recent CBS News poll found that the majority of Americans believed Trump is "definitely or probably" guilty of the charges he faced in New York. The overwhelming majority of Democrats — 93% — believed Trump was guilty, while 78% Republicans said he was not. Independents were split, with 53% believing he was guilty and 47% saying he wasn't.

Opinions about whether Trump was guilty or not were already highly partisan, according to Kabir Khanna, deputy director of elections and data analytics for CBS News. Most people who believed Trump was guilty also thought the jury would convict him, and vice versa.

Additionally, Khanna said people who followed the trial closely were the most polarized in their views.

"Together, these factors could blunt the impact of the verdict on the views of an already divided public," Khanna said. "Some voters may be swayed by the news, but I wouldn't expect a sea change."

Other polling supports that notion. A NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist survey released Thursday found that 67% of registered voters nationwide said a Trump conviction would not make a difference in how they vote. Among independents, just 11% said a guilty verdict would make them less likely to vote for Trump.

The conviction also gives the Biden campaign a potentially potent new weapon in their arsenal: the ability to label Trump a convicted felon. Mr. Biden remained largely silent about the Trump trial while it was ongoing, but NBC News reported last week that he planned to become more aggressive about Trump's legal woes after the trial concluded, while acknowledging that Trump would be on the ballot regardless of how his legal cases played out.

Trump has used the trial to help boost his fundraising, and will likely look to capitalize on the conviction. The Trump campaign and Republican National Committee saw an influx of donations after jury selection began, with the two entities raising $76 million in April. His campaign had about $50 million cash on hand at the beginning of May as he prepared to get back out on the campaign trail after the trial.

The former president repeatedly used the developments in the trial to raise money, including when he was held in contempt for violating the gag order against him.

"I'd get arrested ONE MILLION TIMES before I'd let those filthy dogs get their hands on you," one typical fundraising appeal read.

Trump's other criminal cases

The New York case might be the only one of Trump's four criminal prosecutions to reach a conclusion before voters cast their ballots in the fall, giving the guilty verdict added weight.

The two federal cases brought by special counsel Jack Smith remain in limbo.

In Washington, D.C., Trump faces charges related to his actions to remain in power after the 2016 election. Trump has argued that he is immune from prosecution, and the Supreme Court is currently weighing his claim.

The high court heard arguments in the immunity dispute on April 26 and is expected to issue a decision on the matter before the end of the court's term, likely in June. If the case is allowed to move forward, there is a slim possibility that the district court could schedule the trial before November. If the justices side with Trump and find him immune from prosecution, the charges would be dropped.

In Florida, Trump faces federal charges stemming from his retention of classified documents after he left the White House. Judge Aileen Cannon, who was appointed by Trump, has indefinitely postponed the trial. She ruled in early May that picking a trial date would be "imprudent and inconsistent with the court's duty to fully and fairly consider" numerous unresolved pre-trial motions. Those motions include Trump's efforts to dismiss the case altogether, as well as issues related to what classified information can be revealed at trial.

In the third case that remains outstanding, Trump faces state charges related to the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia. The trial in that matter is also on hold as Trump seeks to have District Attorney Fani Willis removed from the case. Georgia's Court of Appeals recently granted Trump's appeal of a decision that had allowed her to remain, bringing the trial to a temporary halt.

Trump's two federal cases could largely be in voters' hands if they are not resolved by November, a fact that raises his personal stake in the outcome. If he wins and returns to the White House in January 2025, Trump could order the Justice Department to seek to drop the charges altogether.

Trump has pleaded not guilty in all of the criminal cases against him.

The food is amazing! We ordered the Greco salad, 16" Parm Pie and The Real Antipasto with Ciabatta. Picked it up, to go and had dinner at the beach. Couldn't have asked for a better meal for the evening. Our first experience with Tino's and look forward to making it a habit. Thank you!

I don't recall how I heard about Tino's but glad we found them. This Rumson location opened recently and unlike the other locations, it only has seating for 8 people. We were fortunate enough to scoop 2 seats and eat there. They have a mini market with a limited selection of items. We started with the mini arancini and baked gnocchi with truffle bites- both good Pizza- we had the cheese/eggplant- delicious! Tino's is a cute spot with some good food. Worth a visit, especially for take out.

Getting a Prime Seat Assignment on Southwest Just Got More Expensive

The popular airline just increased prices for early check-in and boarding.

seat assignment sabre

Courtesy of Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines has increased the cost of its early check-in and upgraded boarding services, making it a bit pricier for travelers to guarantee the seat they want.

The airline will now charge customers $15 to $99 each way per passenger for EarlyBird Check-in, according to the airline’s optional charges chart , and $30 to $149 per segment, per passenger for Upgraded Boarding. The cost will still vary based on the flight length and demand, a representative for Southwest confirmed to Travel + Leisure.

The new price is significantly higher than the previous cost of $15 to $25 for early check-in and $30 to $80 for upgraded boarding, airline site One Mile at a Time reported .

A representative for Southwest told T+L the decision to increase prices was part of the airline’s regular evaluation of pricing for ancillary products based on market trends and customer demand.

Southwest first started limiting the popular EarlyBird Check-In feature last year as part of a number of changes it implemented in an effort to “modernize” the customer experience. As part of that policy, the airline limited the number of EarlyBird Check-In spots available to purchase on certain flights, routes, or days.

Travelers who do purchase the service are automatically checked in for their flight before the airline’s typical 24-hour check-in period. This ensures a more desirable boarding slot since Southwest doesn’t assign seats and instead offers "open seating," assigning travelers a boarding group (A, B, or C) and a position (1 through 60 or more) when they check in.

Travelers who pay for Upgraded Boarding — a service Southwest first introduced in 2022 — have the option to improve their boarding number when checking in. Passengers who take advantage of this feature receive a boarding assignment position from A1 to A15, becoming the first customers to board and receive first dibs on the seat they want along with the chance at coveted overhead bin space.

The decision to increase the cost of these extra perks came as Southwest made its flights available to view on Google Flights . Travelers must still book on the airline’s website.

The airline has also been kicking around the idea of changing its open seat policy in general with CEO Bob Jordan previously saying the carrier was “looking at new initiatives, the way we seat and the way we board our aircraft.”

Josh Frydenberg would face a rocky path in possible return to Kooyong. Could he succeed?

download-2024-51-2-16.45.51

Josh Frydenberg would need the Victorian Liberal party to make an "unprecedented" decision to discard Kooyong candidate Amelia Hamer and facilitate his political return.

On Sunday, the ABC reported the former treasurer was considering a tilt for the seat he lost in 2022, based on an assumption the electoral commission's proposed new boundaries boost the chance of a Liberal victory.

But the ABC understands the Victorian Liberal party's powerful administrative committee, which can choose to re-open pre-selection in the event of a boundary change, did not see a case to do so for any Victorian seats when it met on Friday.

While some Liberals expect that position could change if Mr Frydenberg confirmed his desire to run, others warn it would be an unprecedented and unwise move to toss out Ms Hamer given the party's well-publicised recent failures to run women in winnable seats.

Former premier Jeff Kennett, a Kooyong local and a supporter of Ms Hamer, told the ABC it was "disappointing" that Mr Frydenberg was considering a return, and that he would create a disruption if he followed through.

"He has made a decision not to stand … I think that should be the finish of it," Mr Kennett said.

"No-one is owed a seat."

And Liberal MP Keith Wolahan, who holds the neighbouring seat of Menzies, told ABC Melbourne Ms Hamer was selected in "a really gruelling process" and he could not see Mr Frydenberg succeeding.

"I understand why people are floating these balloons … [But] I just don't see it happening," he said.

"There was a wide variety of talented candidates and they chose her and she's out working hard … None of that is a criticism of Josh — he was a wonderful person who has contributed enormously and is an enormous talent."

Others support the view previously expressed publicly by former minister Karen Andrews that the party needs more short-term frontbench talent, especially in Victoria, and that the party should do whatever is needed to facilitate Mr Frydenberg's return.

Speaking on ABC Radio National this morning, however, Ms Andrews said Mr Frydenberg would be an "absolute asset" to the party and the Victorian branch should do all it can to "attract him back into parliament".

"I'm well and truly on the record of saying we need to do more to make sure we are preselecting women into winnable seats," Ms Andrews said.

"I see that this is quite a different scenario because of the changes to the seat boundary that has occurred in Victoria."

But there is also broad agreement from both supporters and opponents of Mr Frydenberg within Victoria that the premise of his possible return – that the redrawn boundaries would make Kooyong easier to win – is far from certain.

The path to re-pre-selection

The first step to facilitating a return would be for the 19-person admin committee to re-open pre-selections.

That committee had reason to know this was coming. It was briefed months ago that the boundary changes were likely to have substantial consequences for several seats in the east, including Kooyong, and was advised not to select candidates for those seats until the boundaries were finalised.

That advice was disregarded, not just in Kooyong but in the seat of Chisholm, where Theo Zographos was selected unopposed, and in the seat of Higgins, now slated for abolition, where former MP Katie Allen was pre-selected.

Katie Allen looks at a male reporter who is among a press pack shown standing in front of her at a campaign event

The Liberal party will lodge a submission arguing against the proposed boundaries. But while the details have not been finalised, there is general acceptance of the electoral commission's argument that a seat somewhere in the eastern suburbs must be eliminated.

Assuming the final boundaries look similar to the draft version, the committee will have a difficult decision to make about whether to re-open pre-selections in Kooyong, Chisholm and several other affected seats.

The party's state constitution gives the committee some discretion about when to do this, but the general 'rule of thumb' is that re-selection is only warranted when more than 30 per cent of a seat's voters post-redistribution are new.

Kooyong does not meet that bar – only 24 per cent are new. Menzies, Hotham and Isaacs are slightly higher, at 27 per cent. Only Chisholm is over 30 per cent, a seat that several Liberals suggest could be a landing place for Dr Allen if Higgins is abolished.

If Mr Frydenberg did petition for Kooyong to be re-opened and the admin committee denied him, the party machinery would give him some other options to force the issue, but none without risking an ugly and destructive internal tussle.

Ms Hamer, who like all Liberal candidates is unable to speak publicly about pre-selection, yesterday posted a veiled message in a photo at a Hawthorn weightlifting competition. "Here in Kooyong the community loves to support strong women," she said.

Her supporters point to the comprehensive margin of her pre-selection victory as evidence she has strong local support.

Jeff Kennett

"Amelia is very well educated, very well connected to Liberal issues but also to the community. I believe that she has the capacity to serve the electorate, the state, and the country well over the next 20 years," Mr Kennett told the ABC.

But supporters of Mr Frydenberg point to his continued popularity among local branch members and his continued party fundraising efforts and claim he would comfortably win a pre-selection contest against Ms Hamer.

'If he wants it, it's his,' one Kooyong Liberal said.

A wildcard is that the redrawn boundaries would also redraw the list of party members eligible to vote in pre-selection.

RedBridge director and former Liberal staffer Tony Barry told the ABC there was a particularly high concentration of Liberal branches in Malvern and Toorak, which are set to be added to Kooyong. "It makes it a totally different seat [in internal party terms]," he said.

Is the seat really more favourable to the Liberal Party?

The external battle – that is, an actual election in Kooyong – does not shape as any easier than the internal battle. Independent Dr Monique Ryan won the seat in 2022 with a two-candidate preferred margin of 2.9 per cent.

Election analysts have differing views on exactly how the proposed boundaries would change that margin, which at any rate cannot be known for certain since the new voters will be moving from a Liberal contest with Labor to a Liberal contest with an independent.

Ryan is sitting, smiling as she looks across the chamber.

But Ben Raue, election analyst at the Tally Room, said the redistribution could actually boost Dr Ryan's chances, assuming that Liberal voters in the affluent of Toorak and Malvern would be just as likely to vote for a 'teal' independent as voters in Kew and Balwyn.

The redistribution also adds parts of Prahran, which has a younger, more progressive demographic. And the number of young voters elsewhere in the seat is expected to have increased.

Election Results 2024 highlights: INDIA shrinks BJP numbers but PM Modi set for 3rd term

Election results 2024 highlights: pm modi's grueling campaign strategy seems to have hit back as results poured in on tuesday, wherein the pm's ‘400-paar’ ambition was overshadowed by the india bloc, which restricted the bjp to far below the majority mark of 272.

Election Results 2024 highlights: The BJP-led NDA was leading in about 300 seats while the INDIA bloc's lead crossed 227 seats defying all exit poll predictions as counting gets underway across 542 seats on June 4

The counting of votes for Lok Sabha Elections 2024 began at 8 am. All eyes are on whether the exit poll predictions will hold ground and Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) comes back to power with a historic third straight term.

A party or a coalition needs to win at least 272 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats to be in power at the centre. With one seat, Surat already decided in NDA's kitty unopposed, votes for 542 seats will be counted today.

Narendra Modi will be the first Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to win three straight terms, if the NDA emerges victorious under his leadership in the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 .

What did the exit polls predict?

While most of the exit polls predicted a smooth victory with over 350 seats for PM Modi-led NDA, at least three major exit polls – India Today-My Axis India, India TV-CNX, and News24-Todays Chanakya – have predicted 400 plus seats for the ruling coalition in general elections.

While the BJP is confident of easily crossing the majority-mark and has even planned out celebrations, the Opposition’s INDIA bloc has rubbished the exit polls.

What was the result in 2014 & 2019?

In the Lok Sabha Elections 2019,  pollsters had predicted around 285 seats for the NDA. And in reality the NDA bagged 353 seats, of which the BJP got 303 alone. The Opposition’s UPA managed only 93 seats of which the Congress got 52. In the Lok Sabha Elections 2014, the NDA was estimated to win around 257-340 seats. However, the NDA won 336 seats and Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister for the first time.

As votes were counted for the Lok Sabha election on Tuesday, the former Congress president derided by so many through the campaign was one of the drivers of his party leading or winning close to 100 seats, almost double the 52 from 2019.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has claimed victory for his alliance as early results from the staggered, six-week election showed fewer seats for his Bharatiya Janata Party than expected and it appeared unlikely to secure a majority on its own. Final figures are not expected until Wednesday local time, with counting going late into the night.

Here’s what to know:

  • Where results stand: After winning a record 303 seats in 2019, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party appeared unlikely to win more than 240, far short of the 272 needed to form a majority government on its own.
  • National Democratic Alliance: The political coalition led by Modi’s party appears on track to win a combined 286 seat majority.
  • Modi claims early victory: In a speech to supporters , Modi claimed victory for his alliance , calling the election a big win despite the stronger-than-expected challenge from the opposition.

Across India, supporters of various political parties, leaders and candidates celebrated wins as counting nears its end

After winning a record 303 seats in 2019, the BJP appeared unlikely to win more than 240, far short of the 272 needed to form a majority government on its own, with 194 seats won and the lead in 46 constituencies and counting ongoing.

Modi’s NDA coalition, meantime, was on track to win a combined 286 seat majority, with 225 seats won and leads in 61 races.

The opposition INDIA coalition appeared as if it would win 210 seats.

Final figures were not expected until Wednesday, with counting going late into the night.

The White House on Tuesday commended India for demonstrating its “vibrant democratic process” after close to 970 million Indians went to the polls during its six-week long election.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said the turnout demonstrated the Indian electorate’s commitment to democracy.

“So we celebrate that with them,” Kirby told reporters. ”And we applaud the government writ large for successfully completing a truly, massively-sized electoral undertaking.”

Kirby declined to comment about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP party’s apparent victory, noting that “not all the votes have been tallied and counted.”

India’s president is its head of state, but the position is largely ceremonial.

Droupadi Murmu, the current president, was elected in 2022 by lawmakers — an electoral college that consists of lawmakers in both houses of Parliament and elected members of the legislative assemblies of all states. She hails from the same political party as Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The position can be important during times of political uncertainty such as a hung parliament, when the office assumes greater power. The president is bound by the advice of the Cabinet led by the prime minister, who is the chief executive.

Tallies reported by India’s Election Commission showed Modi’s BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, 209 of them going to BJP.

The opposition Congress party is part of the INDIA alliance , which so far had won 177 seats, 81 of them for Congress.

Tallying is ongoing. A total of 272 seats are needed for a majority.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who claimed victory for his alliance in an election seen as a referendum on his decade in power, is a popular but polarizing leader who has presided over a fast-growing economy while advancing Hindu nationalism.

Modi, 73, is only the second Indian prime minister to win a third straight term.

To supporters, Modi is a larger-than-life figure who has improved India’s standing in the world, helped make its economy the world’s fifth-largest , and streamlined the country’s vast welfare program, which serves around 60% of the population. To some, he may even be more than human.

But to critics, he’s a cult leader who has eroded India’s democracy and advanced divisive politics targeting the Muslims who make up 14% of the country’s population. They say he has also increasingly wielded strong-arm tactics to subdue political opponents, squeeze independent media and quash dissent.

As Narendra Modi claimed victory for his alliance, congratulations from neighbors began rolling in on X despite the National Democratic Alliance having several seats to win before securing a majority.

Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal: “Congratulations to PM @narendramodi on the electoral success of BJP and NDA in the Loksabha elections for the third consecutive term. We are happy to note the successful completion of the world’s largest democratic exercise with enthusiastic participation of the people of India.”

Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay: “Congratulations to my friend PM @narendramodi ji and NDA for the historic 3rd consecutive win in the world’s biggest elections. As he continues to lead Bharat to great heights, I look forward to working closely with him to further strengthen the relations between our 2 countries.”

Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth: “Congratulations Prime Minister Modi Ji @narendramodi on your laudable victory for a historic third term. Under your helm, the largest democracy will continue to achieve remarkable progress. Long live the Mauritius-India special relationship.”

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe: I extend my warmest felicitations to the @BJP4India led NDA on its victory, demonstrating the confidence of the Indian people in the progress and prosperity under the leadership of PM @narendramodi. As the closest neighbour Sri Lanka looks forward to further strengthening the partnership with India.”

Around 33 minutes.

32. The National Democratic Alliance, led by Narendra Modi’s BJP, has claimed 240 seats. It needs 272 to secure a majority and thus a third term for the prime minister.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi says India will will see a “new chapter of big decisions” in his third term in office.

After claiming victory for his coalition alliance despite a lackluster performance from his own party, Modi told a crowd at party headquarters he would not shirk from pushing forward with his agenda.

He said he would advance India’s defense production, jobs for youth, raise exports and help farmers, among other things.

“This country will see a new chapter of big decisions. This is Modi’s guarantee,” he said, speaking in the third person.

His speech is still ongoing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi promises “new chapter of big decisions” after declaring victory for his coalition.

But if his BJP is indeed forced to form a coalition, the party would likely “be heavily dependent on the goodwill of its allies, which makes them critical players who we can expect will extract their pound of flesh, both in terms of policymaking as well as government formation,” said Milan Vaishnav, director of the South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed victory for his alliance, despite a lackluster performance from his own party as it faced a stronger than expected challenge from the opposition, which pushed back against the leader’s mixed economic record and polarizing politics.

Modi said that his National Democratic Alliance will form the government for the third consecutive time.

“Today’s victory is the victory of the world’s largest democracy,” he said, speaking at his party headquarters.

For the first time since Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party swept to power in 2014, it appeared unlikely that it would secure a majority on its own – but the prime minister’s coalition was still expected to be elected to a third five-year term in the world’s largest democratic exercise .

If Modi does have to rely on coalition support to govern, it would be a stunning blow for the 73-year-old, who had hoped for a landslide victory.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi claims victory for his alliance, 329 of 543 seats have been decided, according to India’s Election Commission. Counting is expected to continue through the night.

Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party and its National Democratic Alliance has yet to secure the 272 seats needed for a parliamentary majority, but the prime minister has declared “a very big win.”

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi swept to power a decade ago on promises to transform India’s economy, and as he seeks a third term as prime minister, it would be hard to argue he hasn’t made strides.

The National Democratic Alliance, an Indian political coalition, is led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. It was founded in 1998 and comprises center-right and right-wing political parties.

The coalition’s first chair was former BJP Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The coalition ruled from 1998 to 2004, but then was out of power until 2014, when Modi was first elected as the prime minister.

BJP’s key allies in the NDA include more than a dozen regional parties, including the Telugu Desam Party, Janta Dal (United), Pattali Makkal Katchi, the Republican Parry of India (Athwale Group) and Shiv Sena.

The NDA could be key to Modi retaining his position. In the past two elections, the BJP has secured an outright majority, but early figures indicate it might need the coalition to reach that threshold.

More than 12 hours after vote counting started, India’s Election Commission reports that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has won 140 seats while the Congress party has won 55.

272 seats are needed to secure a majority. Preliminary results indicate Modi’s BJP will need to rely on its coalition partners to achieve that.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party is facing a major upset in India’s most populous state at the hands of a powerful regional group, Samajwadi Party or Socialist Group.

The Samajwadi Party, founded in 1992 and now led by Akhilesh Yadav, has already won 10 seats in Uttar Pradesh state and was leading in another 28 constituencies. It is part of the Congress-led INDIA alliance, which is facing off against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

Modi’s BJP has won in 12 districts (including Modi’s own Varanasi seat) and is leading in 20 constituencies. Exit polls had predicted a landslide victory for the BJP in the state.

“In this election, it seems Lord Ram has deserted the BJP,” Samajwadi spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhry said.

The 73-year-old is one of India’s most beloved — and polarizing — leaders. He’s already won twice, first in 2014 and then in 2019, and is now seeking a hattrick victory.

His supporters see him as a self-made, strong leader who has improved India’s standing on the global stage, and credit his pro-business policies with making the economy the world’s fifth-largest. At the same time, his rule has seen brazen attacks against minorities, particularly Muslims.

India’s democracy, critics say, is faltering and Modi has increasingly blurred the line between religion and state. But both agree on one thing: Modi has achieved staying power by making Hindu nationalism acceptable — desirable, even — to a nation of 1.4 billion that for decades prided itself on secularism and diversity.

Millions of Indians are voting in a six-week long national election in a referendum on Narendra Modi, the populist prime minister who has championed an assertive brand of Hindu nationalist politics. The voters will cast ballots in the first round of voting across 21 states. Over 970 million voters will elect 543 members for the lower house of Parliament for five years during the staggered elections that will run until June 1. The votes will be counted on June 4. Each phase was held on a single day, with voting in several constituencies across multiple states. The staggered polling allowed the government to deploy tens of thousands of troops to prevent violence and transport election officials and voting machines.

For more than a century, Bollywood has unified India, a country riven with religious, caste and political divide. It’s been a rare industry where religion has been least influential in deciding the success of filmmakers and actors. Bollywood films have also championed political diversity and religious harmony.

That culture, however, appears to be under threat.

Under Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government, many filmmakers have made movies on bygone Hindu kings extolling their bravery. Boisterous and action-packed movies valorizing the Indian Army have become box office successes. Political dramas and biopics that eulogize Hindu nationalists are the norm.

In most of these films, the stock villains are medieval Muslim rulers, leftist or opposition leaders, free thinkers or rights activists — and neighboring Pakistan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi says his coalition is on the path to a third straight term in government after India’s marathon election.

“People have placed their faith in NDA, for a third consecutive time! This is a historical feat in India’s history,” Modi on Tuesday said in a post on X, referring to the National Democratic Alliance which his party heads. He said he will continue to work and fulfil the aspirations of the people.

As Modi posted his comment, his coalition had won 128 seats and led in 157 races according to the Election Commission. A total of 272 seats were needed to form a majority government.

For Payal, a resident of the northern city of Lucknow who uses only one name, the election was about the economy and India’s vast number of people living in poverty. “People are suffering, there are no jobs, people are in such a state that their kids are compelled to make and sell tea on the roadside,” Payal said. “This is a big deal for us. If we don’t wake up now, when will we?”

As votes are being counted, Arvind Kejriwal, 55, is likely keeping track — from jail.

One of India’s most consequential opposition leaders, Kejriwal was arrested in March over alleged corruption charges, and let out on bail in May for a few weeks. He campaigned heavily during this time in his stronghold of New Delhi, India’s capital, as well as a few other cities before heading back to jail.

Kejriwal stormed into Indian politics in 2012 as he launched the anti-corruption Aam Aadmi Party, or Common People’s Party.

Since then, he has emerged as a fierce Modi rival, especially in New Delhi and Punjab state, where his party is in power.

His arrest and the ensuing saga dominated headlines, as he and his party accused Modi’s government of engineering his arrest to keep him out of the race. The government has denied this.

Kejriwal’s AAP is part of a broad alliance of opposition parties called INDIA, the main challenger to Modi’s BJP in this election.

Rahul Gandhi, the face of the Congress party’s campaign and would-be prime minister, said the preliminary results showed India does not want Narendra Modi.

“People’s clear message to PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah is that we don’t want you to run the nation,” Gandhi said at a Congress party press conference around 10 hours into the vote count. “The poorest of this country have defended the constitution of India.”

Flanked by Congress leaders, including mother Sonia Gandhi, the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty scion brandished a copy of the constitution.

Despite a stronger-than-expected showing from Congress’ INDIA alliance thus far, Modi is still expected to secure a third term as prime minister.

The counting is ticking along more than 10 hours after it began, and results have now been called for 103 parliamentary seats out of a total of 543.

Modi’s National Democratic Alliance had won 67 seats, with 62 of them going to his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, according to India’s Election Commission. The opposing INDIA coalition had bagged 31 seats, with the main Congress party winning 27 of them. The remaining five seats went to other regional parties.

India’s opposition Congress party has called its alliance’s strong showing in the polls a “win for democracy” and a “moral and political loss” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Congress party President Mallikarjun Kharge just addressed a press conference in New Delhi, saying that because no party had a clear majority, the mandate was against Modi.

“Our fight has not ended yet. We will continue to fight for the country’s development, for the constitution, for the benefit of the people,” Kharge said.

Modi’s coalition led in a majority of seats Tuesday in India’s general election , according to early figures, but faced a stronger challenge from the opposition than expected after it pushed back against the leader’s mixed economic record and polarizing politics. Modi was still widely expected to be elected to a third five-year term in the world’s largest democratic exercise .

Some 10 hours into counting , partial tallies reported by India’s Election Commission showed Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party was ahead in 196 constituencies and had won 45, including one uncontested, of 543 parliamentary seats. The main opposition Congress party led in 83 constituencies and had won 15.

A total of 272 seats are needed for a majority. In 2019, the BJP won 303 seats, while they secured 282 in 2014 when Modi first came to power.

Modi’s party is part of the National Democratic Alliance, whose members led in 236 constituencies and won 50, according to the partial count. The Congress party is part of the INDIA alliance , which led in 211 constituencies and had won 19.

The Election Commission does not release data on the percentage of votes tallied.

India’s general elections are held every five years. There are no specified term limits for lawmakers and thus no limit on how many years a prime minister can serve. Narendra Modi has already been in power for a decade. Should he win a third term and finish it out, he’ll near the record of the longest-serving prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

India employs a first-past-the-post multiparty electoral system. That means for individual contests, whoever receives the most votes wins. To win a parliamentary majority — and thus the premiership — a party or a coalition of parties must secure at least 272 seats (543 seats are up for a vote). India’s electoral system is similar to the U.K.’s.

Although Narendra Modi is the former chief minister of Gujarat, the incumbent prime minister has retained his seat in Varanasi.

It’s the constituency from which he first ran and won in 2014. Located in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, Varanasi is a holy Hindu city. It’s about 1,350 kilometers (840 miles) east of Modi’s hometown of Vadnagar in Gujarat state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won his seat from the Hindu holy city of Varanasi, the constituency from where he ran and won, first in 2014 and then again in 2019, India’s election commission reported.

Modi, who won by more than 152,000 votes, secured 54% of total votes. He was pitted against opposition Congress party’s Ajai Rai, who secured 40% of the votes.

In campaign rallies, Narendra Modi has called Muslims “infiltrators” and said they “have too many children,” referring to a Hindu nationalist trope that Muslims produce more children with the aim of outnumbering Hindus in India. He has also accused the rival Indian National Congress party of scheming to “loot” wealth from the country’s Hindus and redistribute it among Muslims, who comprise 14% of India’s more than 1.4 billion people.

Modi had kicked off his campaign with a focus on economic progress, promising he would make India a developed nation by 2047. But he and the ruling BJP doubled down heavily on their Hindu nationalism platform , with Modi employing some of his most divisive rhetoric in his decade in power.

The Congress party filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India, alleging Modi broke rules that bar candidates from engaging in any activity that aggravates religious tensions.

Analysts say the change in tone came as the BJP targeted a supermajority by consolidating votes among the majority Hindu population — a number that now seems out of reach. They say Modi’s party also ratcheted up polarizing speeches to distract voters from larger issues, like unemployment and economic distress, that the opposition has focused on.

Narendra Modi’s BJP have lost their seat in Ayodhya, a deeply symbolic loss for the party after the prime minister opened a grand but controversial Hindu temple there in January.

The BJP candidate, Lallu Singh, lost to a candidate put up by the regional Samajwadi Party, Singh’s poll agent Kamlesh Srivastava told The Associated Press. Singh had held the seat since 2014.

Modi and his party have heavily campaigned on this temple dedicated to Lord Ram, built on the historic ruins of a mosque that was destroyed by Hindu mobs in 1992.

Experts said the January opening, where Modi performed rituals inside the temple, marked the unofficial start of his campaign as they hoped it would resonate with his Hindu majority voters. Modi’s government had turned the event into a national occasion by organizing live screenings across the country and closing offices for half a day.

Outside the BJP party office in New Delhi, supporter Vinod Kumar Vidyarthi sported a stole emblazoned with Modi’s likeness and toted a Modi-branded water bottle and sweets.

Despite the sweets, he had strong words regarding the election and the Hindu nationalist party he supports: “Our party will form the government. We had traitors within us. After we form the government, it will be a victory for Hindus and we will chase away all those who betrayed us.”

The Northern Angami constituency of Chedema village is Nagaland’s first to be solely managed by women polling officers. It was the idea of Kumar Ramnikant, the administrative head of Kohima district, in hopes of breaking job stereotypes.

“Women are more systematic. They take every sentence seriously, whereas men have an easy attitude,” said Zhoto Khamo, an officer who has supervised many elections.

The vote counting is still carrying on, but results have been called for 28 parliamentary seats out of 542 so far.

Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party has won 19 seats, according to India’s Election Commission, while its main opposition Congress party bagged 4 seats. The rest went to different regional parties.

Vote tallying is expected to take all day, but the count so far shows Modi’s party leading in 225 constituencies with the Congress ahead in 93.

The polls are seen as a test for India’s democratic and secular traditions, which critics say have seen a slow erosion under Narendra Modi’s 10-year rule. It also tests the limits of a populist leader who has risen to power by mixing religion with politics on a Hindu-first platform.

India’s clout on the global stage has risen under Modi. It’s seen by Western nations as a counterweight to Chinese aggression in the region even as New Delhi maintains its historic ties with Russia. And its large economy, one of the fastest growing in the world, has only boosted its rise as an emerging global power.

Early leads from India’s election commission projected Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party was leading in 25 of 26 seats in the prime minister’s home state of Gujarat. But party leaders said they were not celebrating victory because of a recent fire at an amusement park in the state that killed 27 people.

A massive fire broke out last month at an amusement park in the state’s Rajkot city. Those killed included children.

“We had decided that there will be no celebratory victory or beating of drums. So we are not celebrating,” said C. R. Patil, a senior leader from Modi’s party.

The 53-year-old is the scion of modern India’s most powerful political dynasty. He is the great-grandson of the country’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. His grandmother and father also held the top job and were each assassinated.

He is the star face for the opposition Congress party, which governed India for nearly 55 years after the country gained independence from the British in 1947. This time, he and his Congress party are leading the main opposition alliance, called INDIA, against Narendra Modi’s BJP.

While his family connections have helped retain some loyal voters, they have also worked against him — especially in the past two elections, where he suffered huge losses against Modi, who refers to Gandhi as an out-of-touch elite, coasting on his surname.

On the campaign trail, Gandhi has called Modi a dictator ruining India’s democracy. He has attacked Modi and the BJP over recent anti-Muslim rhetoric. And his party is hoping to benefit from economic distress, including high unemployment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalist party appears to be falling short of a majority in the early vote count. If these trends hold, it would be a stunning setback to the populist who has never relied on coalition partners to govern.

Modi’s party is still expected to form the government and return as the prime minister for a rare third consecutive term as his National Democratic Alliance was leading in about 290 constituencies — ahead of the 272 seats needed for a majority. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party alone was leading in 242 seats.

A coalition would, however, diminish Modi’s power as a strongman leader who won his party landslide victories in 2014 and 2019 elections.

In such a scenario, his BJP would likely “be heavily dependent on the goodwill of its allies, which makes them critical players who we can expect will extract their pound of flesh, both in terms of policymaking as well as government formation,” said Milan Vaishnav, director of the South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

“This would be truly, you know, uncharted territory, both for Indians as well as for the prime minister,” Vaishnav said.

Since coming to power in 2014, Modi’s BJP has governed in a coalition government but has always held a majority on its own.

As hundreds of millions headed to the polls, they did so amid sweltering heat and unpredictable weather extremes worsened by human-caused climate change. That climate change has led to losses of livelihood, forced migration and increasingly difficult living conditions.

India’s top political parties made promises to address climate change and reduce emissions in their election manifestos — but little of that was evident on the campaign trail.

Here’s a look at what climate change has wrought in the country:

  • Western and central India: extreme heat and longer droughts
  • Coastal regions: stronger and more frequent cyclones
  • Northeastern India: unpredictable and increased flooding
  • Himalayas: melting glaciers and intense rain
