Broadly speaking, a motivation letter contains two general things, that are the reasons why you are the right candidate to get a scholarship, and what contribution you will make with the knowledge you have. In writing a motivation letter, there are several things you need to understand so that the letter has a clear structure and convincing content, including:

1. Follow the Application Writing Guidelines

It may look simply, but you need to re-examine the guidelines for writing scholarship applications. Make sure that what you write follows the guidelines, starting from the format, length, and content. If the scholarship awarding institution doesn't provide specific guidelines, you can write it in a standard format such as text about half to one page long in Times New Roman or Arial font with a size of 12 points.

2. Knowing What You Want to Write

Before writing a motivation letter, you need to understand the outline of the letter. Don't let any part be missed.

Mention the reason why you are applying for a scholarship abroad. Because this letter is intended for a scholarship, you need to state your reasons for choosing the scholarship by explaining your educational background and experience. If you have worked, done an internship, or participated in social activities, you can share these experiences to strengthen your reason for applying for a scholarship. With good delivery and flow, your scholarship application letter can leave a distinct impression on the assessor.

Explain the reasons for choosing the major and the destination campus In addition to the reasons for choosing a scholarship, you also need to write down the reasons why you chose a particular major and campus. For example, you have good public speaking skills, so this scholarship is intended to deepen and hone that knowledge. Things like this are what you should add as reasons for choosing your major and destination campus.

Share your plan or contribution to the scholarship In this section, you can focus on your mission, study goals, and what you want to achieve or plan to achieve through this scholarship. 3. Focus on Your Strengths

Do not copy other people's motivation letters. Seeing examples from the internet is not wrong. However, use that motivation letter example as a reference only and as a consideration what you need to write about.

Making motivational letters too formal and will sounds too boring. Write sentences fluently and use words that reflect your true thoughts. No need to use complicated words or terms, just choose good diction and avoid repeating words.

The UNIL Masters Grant is a competitive scholarship program designed to support international students who wish to pursue a Master’s degree at the University of Lausanne. The grant is awarded to students based on their academic merit and potential, allowing them to study in a range of disciplines offered at UNIL. This scholarship not only alleviates the financial burden of studying abroad but also opens doors to a world-class education in Switzerland.

Eligibility Criteria –

• To have obtained a foreign university degree considered equivalent to a Swiss university bachelor before the beginning of the masters programme at UNIL.
• To have distinguished yourself during your studies, especially through particularly brilliant academic results.
• To have a language level of at least C1 (according to the European Language Portfolio global scale) in French or at least C1 in English according to the language in which your chosen master is taught.
• Not to be registered at UNIL
• To have paid the CHF 200 Administrative fees.
• Financial Support: The grant amounts to CHF 1,600 or INR 1.6 Lakhs per month, which is intended to cover living expenses during the academic year (September 15 to July 15). This grant is provided for the entire duration of the Master’s program, excluding any extension period.
• Tuition Fee Waiver: Recipients of the UNIL Masters Grant are exempt from paying the fixed registration fees of CHF 80. However, they will still be required to pay the semester tuition fees, which amount to CHF 80 per semester.
• Access to World-Class Education: The grant provides an opportunity to study at one of Europe’s leading universities, gaining access to high-quality education, cutting-edge research facilities, and a multicultural academic environment.

How to apply?

The application form for the Masters Scholarship also serves as an application for admission to the chosen Master’s program, you therefore do not need to apply for the master’s degree at the Admission Office.

• Candidates for the Masters Scholarship must apply online and upload their complete application file in PDF during the online application.
• The deadline for an application is November 1st to begin a master’s degree during the following academic year, in the autumn semester or the spring semester (if the programme allows).

Selection Procedure

• 1 November: Application deadline
• November to December: Processing of applications by SASME and the Admissions Office (SII)
• December to January: The SASME informs candidates whose application is incomplete or has not been accepted by the Admissions Office that their application for the scholarship has been unsuccessful.
• January to February: Complete applications are transferred to the faculties for consideration of their eligibility for the chosen master’s degrees.
• February to March: The SASME informs candidates whose application has not been accepted by the faculty.
• March: The Selection Board for the Masters Scholarships selects the candidates who will be offered a Masters Scholarship.
• Early April: Candidates are informed of the Selection Board’s decision.

A. Any member of the teaching staff with knowledge of your past or present studies (lecturers, supervisors, assistant lecturers, etc.). Any of your current or former employers may also write a letter of recommendation.

Q. Is the Master’s Grant sufficient to live in Switzerland?

A. The Federal and Cantonal Authorities consider that an amount of approximately CHF 2000.- per month is necessary to live in Lausanne. As such, the amount of the Masters Scholarship does not cover the full expenses of a student. It is thus highly recommended to have some personal complementary financial resources in order to supplement the monthly budget.

Q.  Can I apply if I have not yet obtained my degree equivalent to a Swiss university bachelor’s degree?

A. Yes, you may apply for a Masters Scholarship even if you have not yet obtained your degree equivalent to a Swiss university bachelor’s degree at the time of application. Nonetheless, you must of course have completed and obtained your degree before the start of your chosen master’s programme at UNIL.

Q. What are the language requirements for the UNIL Masters Grant?

A. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the language of instruction for their chosen program. This may be either French or English, depending on the program. A language proficiency certificate may be required as part of the application.

A. Applicants are selected based on their academic merit, motivation, and the relevance of their chosen Master’s program to their career goals. A selection committee reviews all applications and selects the most deserving candidates.
