How to Create a Problem-Solving Google Slides Presentation
![presentation on solving a problem Andrew Childress](https://cms-assets.tutsplus.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=40/uploads/users/15/profiles/36/profileImage/profile.jpg)
At its core, running a business is a problem-solving practice. To conquer challenges, you'll need team buy-in. It helps to create presentations that highlight problem solution slides.
![presentation on solving a problem Intro problem and the solution](https://cms-assets.tutsplus.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=850/uploads/users/151/posts/108659/image-upload/intro_problem_and_the_solution.jpg)
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to use 7-step problem-solving techniques in presentations. It's critical to present the problem in a way that makes sense to the audience.
You'll see presenting problem examples to drive great discussions. Then, you'll learn how to create slides that share a solution to the problem at hand. Let's jump in!

You Just Learned Problem Solution Slide Skills
Problems are a fact of life and business, but they can also be repositioned as opportunities for improvement. When a problem is framed properly, you can present options and move past it with growth.
In this tutorial, we'll tackle how to create problem solution slides. Not only will it show you how to frame a problem, but it will also help you get support from your team.
![presentation on solving a problem 7S problem solving Google Slide](https://cms-assets.tutsplus.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=850/uploads/users/151/posts/108659/image-upload/7s_problem_solving_google_slide.jpg)
To save time and create great designs, we'll use a design from Envato Elements. The 7S Problem Solving Google Slide Template has a litany of pre-built slides we can use. With these out-of-the-box visuals, we can simply update the template with our specifics.
This template includes many great designs that connect to the 7-Step Problem-Solving framework. The 7-Step Problem-Solving approach is a hybrid of many common management frameworks for problem-solving.
Here are the key steps:
- Define the problem: It's important to start by framing the problem. Use a slide to explain the problem and its possible causes.
- Analyze the problem: After an initial hypothesis, it's important to turn to data. Use data analysis to dig deeper into the "why" for the problem and solution.
- Define the goals: Before you solve a problem, you should set goals. You can then test your potential solutions to ensure they move you toward those goals.
- Generate potential solutions: Brainstorming is crucial. You need a range of options to choose from, so generate ideas with an open mind.
- Select the solution: After sifting through potential options, narrow the scope to a single path forward.
- Implement the solution: Once a solution is selected, you need an action plan to put it into practice. Use a slide to share the implementation plan.
- Evaluate the results: You might not choose the perfect solution to a problem. It's important to monitor results with an open mind. That gives you the freedom to adjust your solution to the problem.
Now, let's review seven slides that connect to the 7-step problem-solving framework. You could use slides like these to spark a group discussion. Plus, they can help you align on the path forward. Or use them to explore problems and solutions in your own business. Let's dive in!
1. The Problem Statement Slide
Let's build out an example slide that focuses on defining the problem. This is an under-appreciated part of the problem-solving process.
If the group doesn't agree on the problem presented, how can you develop a solution? Slide 2 is ideal for teeing up the problem and building up the "why" factors that contribute.
![presentation on solving a problem Problem and the solution before](https://cms-assets.tutsplus.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=850/uploads/users/151/posts/108659/image-upload/1_9_problem_and_the_solution_before.jpg)
In my experience, sharing a problem statement slide sparks discussion. Use this as a working session to define the problem being presented. It's best to start out with an open, candid conversation.
Start the session with only two things complete: the slide title and the Problem statement. Then, use a working session with your team to fill out all of the Why? points on the slide. It's crucial to use this process to build buy-in from your team.
2. The Problem Analysis Slide
Here's a tip I've found for framing the problem presented: you need to bring data to the table. Tie your approach back to the problem, and the solution will become clear.
Slide 14 is what's known as a Pareto chart, and it's ideal for showing parts that make up the entirety of the problem. In many cases, the Pareto chart highlights two to three key drivers that explain almost the entire story.
In a Pareto chart, you'll list the key statistical factors that contribute to your problem. Populate the leftmost bars with the largest drivers. You can use the overlaid line chart to build toward 100%. This visual highlights the most prevalent root causes, which can help you formulate solutions to the problem options.
![presentation on solving a problem Problem analysis slide using a Pareto chart](https://cms-assets.tutsplus.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=850/uploads/users/151/posts/108659/image-upload/problem_analysis_slide.jpg)
If you don't have data, you might want to rethink how you're framing the problem. After all, if you lack data about the problem, how can you arrive at a solution? Consider taking a step back to collect data that builds buy-in for change.
3. The Objective-Setting Slide
If you don't set a goal, how will you know if you've solved your problem? It's important to create a slide that sets the objective for solving the problem presented.
I'll start with Slide 3 in the presentation, which most closely resembles a timeline. But there's no reason that you have to use it for chronological data. I'm going to customize it to show the key pillars of my objectives.
![presentation on solving a problem Objective setting slide](https://cms-assets.tutsplus.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=850/uploads/users/151/posts/108659/image-upload/objective_setting_slide.jpg)
Remember that at this stage in the process, we haven't decided on an exact path forward. I like to use an objective-setting slide to paint a high-level vision.
As an example, I customized the slide with key objectives. In my case, I opted to remove the icons and simplify the "timeline" to just four key pillars. This brings more focus to the slide.
![presentation on solving a problem Quality objective push](https://cms-assets.tutsplus.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=850/uploads/users/151/posts/108659/image-upload/quality_objective_push.jpg)
Remember that every slide in our presentation is totally customizable. It's designed to give you a starting point. Then, you can use these presenting problem examples to describe your scenario.
Don't forget: if the icons on this slide don't match your business purpose, you can source other icon sets on Envato Elements . Your subscription unlocks Google Slides problem-solving templates and icons.
4. The Solution Exploration Slide
By now, some trends should emerge in your exploration of the problem. You've probably started to zone in on several key options you could use to solve the problem.
At this stage, I suggest gathering the potential range of solutions and building out a slide that shares them. You could use any slide for this approach, but I like to display them all for discussion. You can use slide 6 in our template for this.
![presentation on solving a problem Solution exploration slide](https://cms-assets.tutsplus.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=850/uploads/users/151/posts/108659/image-upload/solution_exploration_slide.jpg)
Remember that great slides can serve as the catalyst for a discussion. By sharing your ideas, you're sure to ignite more ideas for collaboration.
5. The Solution Selection Slide
It's time to share the solution implemented. For this, I'll use slide 11.
In situations like this, I employ a tactic that I call "something for everyone." You want to create buy-in from every group and let them know they were considered in decision-making.
![presentation on solving a problem Solution selection slide](https://cms-assets.tutsplus.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=850/uploads/users/151/posts/108659/image-upload/solution_selection_slide.jpg)
Slide 11 is great for this concept. Think of each of these blocks as an opportunity to explain your decision. Use one block per group or team affected, and then share your idea.
6. The Solution Implementation Slide
Once you've settled on a solution to the problem presented, you're ready to formulate a plan. That means taking the individual action steps and sequencing them. For this, I love slide 12, which uses a Gantt chart.
The Gantt chart methodology is common and powerful for planning a project. Most projects consist of many actions that run in parallel. By using a Gantt chart, you can show each of those steps and who owns them.
![presentation on solving a problem Solution implementation slide](https://cms-assets.tutsplus.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=850/uploads/users/151/posts/108659/image-upload/solution_implementation_slide.jpg)

![presentation on solving a problem](https://cms-assets.tutsplus.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=400/uploads/users/151/posts/107441/preview_image/icon_gantt_slides.jpg)
7. The Results Review Slide
Change management is an ongoing process. It means revisiting your results over time to ensure that the solution addresses the problem.
I recommend using a slide like slide 13 to keep your team posted with the results of your solution. You can use each of these points on the slide to monitor metrics to measure project success.
![presentation on solving a problem results review problem solving](https://cms-assets.tutsplus.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=850/uploads/users/151/posts/108659/image-upload/results_review_problem_solving.jpg)
That's it! You've created a deck that includes all of the essential problem solution slides. With this approach, you can spark great group discussion and formulate a plan. Jump in and try it yourself to share the problem and the solution.

How to Write a Problem Statement
A problem statement serves as the foundation for any project, ensuring that everyone involved understands the core of the problem they need to solve. Crafting a well-defined statement is crucial for guiding a team toward a solution efficiently.
Follow these steps to create a compelling problem statement:
- Identify the Problem: Gather information about the issue through research, observations, or discussions with stakeholders. For customer problem statements, this might include using surveys or customer service calls to gather data on customer pain points. Use templates such as the 5 Ws to thoroughly understand the who, what, when, where, and why of the problem.
- Explain the Impact: Describe how the problem affects the organization, customers, or stakeholders. Provide data or examples to illustrate the extent of the problem's impact.
- Analyze the Cause: Investigate and identify the root causes of the problem. Understanding why the problem exists is crucial for finding an effective solution. Keep asking why and drilling down to the root cause to ensure that your problem statement describes the core problem rather than a symptom.
- Set Objectives: Define what a successful solution would look like. Outline the desired outcome and what changes or improvements you aim to achieve. Use financial and other measurable data to illustrate the benefits of your proposed solution.
- Specify Constraints and Requirements: Highlight any limitations — such as budget, time, or resources — that could impact the solution. Also, list any necessary criteria that the solution must meet, providing measurable benchmarks for success.
- Review and Refine: Once you draft the problem statement, review it to ensure clarity. The statement can be referenced throughout the project to keep work on track, but keep in mind that factors can change, impacting solutions and action plans. Be prepared to pivot as the project progresses.
The key to an effective problem statement lies in its clarity and precision. Keep it succinct, focused on the problem, and free of jargon to ensure that it's accessible to everyone involved.

How Do You Present a Problem Statement?
Presenting a problem statement is your opportunity to bring the problem to life, engage your audience, and set the stage for collaborative problem-solving. While a written problem statement can be as short as an elevator pitch, stakeholders need context to understand the significance of a problem and the reasoning behind any proposed solutions.
Here are the elements to include in a problem statement presentation:
- State the Problem Clearly: Present the problem statement in a clear and concise manner. Use simple language to ensure that everyone understands the issue at hand.
- Discuss Causes and Impact: Briefly introduce the background and relevance of the problem to your audience. Share your insights into the causes of the problem. This helps in building a common understanding of the problem's roots and complexity. Use data, anecdotes, or real-life examples to illustrate the significance of the problem and how it affects the organization, stakeholders, or customers.
- Clarify Outcomes: Clearly state what you aim to achieve by solving the problem. Define the desired outcomes and success criteria to give your audience a clear idea of the direction you propose. Acknowledge any limitations or specific requirements that could influence the approach to solving the problem. This transparency helps in setting realistic expectations.
- Invite Feedback: Encourage your audience to share their thoughts, questions, and suggestions. Foster an open dialogue to promote collaborative problem-solving.
- Conclude With Next Steps: End your presentation by summarizing the key points and outlining next steps to ensure everyone leaves with a clear understanding of the problem and the actions required.
Keep your presentation focused, clear, and interactive to maximize understanding and participation. The goal is not only to present a problem but to motivate and guide your audience toward finding a solution together.

Decision making is a crucial part of any business or organization, and the ability to make effective decisions can mean the difference between success and failure. Of course, making the right decision isn’t always easy, which is why it’s essential to have a strong problem-solving process in place. This blog post discusses the definition of problem solving and some of the recommended problem solving models and techniques PowerPoint templates .
What is Problem Solving?
Problem solving is the process of identifying and resolving issues or challenges. It can be done individually or as part of a team. Problem solving usually requires a systematic approach and often includes steps such as: identifying the problem, generating potential solutions, evaluating the options, selecting the solution, and implementing the plan. Of course, not every problem will require all of these steps. But in general, taking a systematic and structured approach to problem solving will increase the chances of finding a successful resolution. With practice, problem solving can become second nature – something that we do automatically and effortlessly. When faced with an issue or challenge, our first instinct will be to quickly find a solution that works.
The Problem Solving Process
The first step in the problem solving process is to identify the source of the problem. Once the source has been identified, it is important to gather information about the problem. This may include conducting research, observing the situation, or speaking to those who are affected by the problem . Once enough information has been gathered, it is time to start brainstorming solutions. Possible solutions should be evaluated based on their feasibility and potential impact. After a solution has been chosen, it is important to implement it in a way that is efficient and effective. Finally, it is necessary to monitor the situation to ensure that the chosen solution is having the desired effect. If not, then the problem solving process will need to begin anew in order to find a different solution.

The PDCA cycle is a quality control method that can be used to continually improve processes and systems. The four steps of the cycle are: Plan, Do, Check (study), and Act. The Plan step involves identifying the problem and developing a plan to address it. The Do step involves implementing the plan. The Check (study) step involves monitoring the results of the implementation and determining whether they are effective. The Act step involves taking action to make permanent changes based on the findings of the study. By following this cycle, organizations can improve their processes and systems on an ongoing basis.

Five Why’s is a simple and effective root cause analysis tool that can be used to identify the underlying cause of an issue. The Five Why’s Framework is based on the premise that for every problem, there are five whys that need to be asked in order to get to the root cause. Asking why five times gets to the heart of the matter and helps to ensure that all possible causes are considered. The Five Why’s tool can be used for both individual and team problem-solving exercises. It is a helpful tool for preventing issues from recurring because it gets everyone thinking about all the potential causes of a problem, not just the most obvious ones. David Smyth first introduced the CATWOE Analysis in 1975 as a tool for business and systems analysis.
The acronym CATWOE stands for:
- Transformation Process
- Environmental Constraints
This framework can be used to identify and understand the key elements of a system under consideration. By taking into account the needs of customers, the people who will be affected by the system, the process that will be used to implement it, and the worldview that it represents, CATWOE Analysis provides a comprehensive way to understand complex systems. In addition, by considering environmental constraints and identifying who will be responsible for operating and maintaining the system, CATWOE Analysis can help to ensure that a proposed system is viable and sustainable.

The name “fishbone” comes from the fact that the diagram resembles the skeleton of a fish . The main purpose of the fishbone diagram is to help identify all of the possible causes of a problem so that it can be more effectively addressed. The diagram is often used in quality management and Six Sigma initiatives as a way to brainstorm about potential causes and identify root causes. It can also be used in other business settings as a tool for identifying problems and their causes. Design Thinking is a method for approaching problems with empathy, creativity, and a focus on real-world solutions. The process begins with empathizing with those who will be using the product or solution. This step helps to ensure that the final product meets the needs of the end users. Once the problem has been clearly defined, the next step is to ideate or generate ideas for potential solutions. These ideas are then prototyped or put into a form that can be tested in the real world. Finally, the prototypes are tested with users to get feedback and refine the design. The Design Thinking process is an iterative one, meaning that each step is automatically followed by another round of refinement. This cycle continues until the problem is solved in a way that is both effective and efficient.

The Simplex Problem-Solving Process, developed by Min Basadur , is a systematic and comprehensive approach to problem solving that can be applied to both individual and organizational problems . The process begins with problem finding, followed by fact-finding and problem definition. Once the problem has been adequately defined, the focus shifts to idea/solution finding; this involves generating and evaluating potential solutions to the problem. Once a satisfactory solution has been found, it is then necessary to sell the idea/gain acceptance from those who will be affected by it. Finally, taking action to implement the solution and monitoring its effectiveness completes the process. Throughout the process, it is important to maintain open communication and keep all stakeholders involved and informed of progress. The Simplex Problem-Solving Process is an effective tool for addressing both simple and complex problems in an organized and efficient manner. The SCAMPER technique is a powerful tool for generating new ideas. It was developed by Bob Eberle in 1971 as a way to help people develop their imagination.
The technique involves seven different steps:
- Put to another use
Each step provides a different way of looking at a problem or challenge and can help to spark new ideas. For example, the “substitute” step asks you to consider what you could use instead of the existing element. This can lead to new ways of solving problems or creating entirely new products or services. The “combine” step asks you to consider two or more elements and how they could be combined. This can lead to new combinations of products or services or new ways of using existing products or services. The other steps provide similarly powerful ways of generating new ideas, and all together, they can help you to overcome creative blocks and come up with fresh solutions.

Innovation management is a combination of strategic and operational activities that are necessary for an organization to introduce and deliver new products, services, or processes. The goal of innovation management is to create value through the development and commercialization of new ideas. There are many different models and practices that can be used to achieve this goal, but they all share some common elements. First, innovation management must identify and assess opportunities for a new product or service development. Second, it must create a plan for how to develop and commercialize these new ideas. Finally, it must monitor progress and make adjustments as necessary to ensure that the goals are met. By following these steps, organizations can increase their chances of successful innovation. Tim Hurson developed the Productive Thinking Model in his book, Think Better (2010) , and it is based on the premise that, in order to be successful, we need to understand what is going on, what success looks like, and what the question is. Once we have a clear understanding of these three things, we can then generate answers, forge the solution, and align resources. The model is designed to help individuals and organizations think more effectively so that they can achieve their desired outcomes. The Productive Thinking Model has been used by a variety of organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. When applied correctly, it can help individuals and organizations to achieve success. Once you are done with the presentation, you can save it on OneDrive or Google Drive for remote access.

![8D-Report-PowerPoint-Templates-Diagrams 8D Problem Solving Report PowerPoint Template - Create a Stunning Presentation for Learning the 8D Problem Solving Report Process to Save Your Business](https://www.slidesalad.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/8D-Report-PowerPoint-Templates-Diagrams.jpg)
8D (Eight Disciplines) is a problem-solving methodology used in engineering primarily for corrective action and preventive action. It includes specific steps for identifying, analyzing, and correcting root causes of defects/issues. The method was developed by Ford Motor Company in the 1980s but has since been adopted by other companies across various industries.
The 8D methodology follows a logical sequence of 8 steps:
- Define the problem.
- Form a cross-functional team.
- Describe the current situation.
- Identify and implement short-term containment actions.
- Identify root causes and verify their effects.
- Develop and implement permanent corrective actions.
- Prevent the recurrence of the problem by implementing systemic improvements.
- Congratulate the team on a job well done.
Following these steps helps to ensure that problems are properly identified and addressed at the root cause level, preventing them from recurring in the future. Additionally, involving a cross-functional team in the problem-solving process ensures that all relevant stakeholders have a chance to provide input and improve the chances of success. Ultimately, 8D is an effective tool for improving quality and preventing them from happening again in the future.

The PPDAC cycle is a five-step process for solving problems and making decisions introduced by R.J. McKay and R.W. Oldford . It is commonly used in business and government, as well as in personal decision-making.
The steps in the cycle are:
- Conclusions
- The first step in the cycle is to identify the problem. This involves understanding what the problem is and why it is important to solve.
- The second step is to develop a plan for how to solve the problem. This plan should take into account the resources available and the potential risks and benefits of different courses of action.
- The third step is to gather data. This data can come from research, surveys, interviews, or observation. Once the data has been gathered, it must be analyzed to identify trends and patterns.
- The fourth step is to reach conclusions based on the data analysis. These conclusions should be supported by evidence and should be clear and concise.
- The fifth and final step is to take action based on the conclusions. This action may involve implementing a plan or making a decision.
The PPDAC cycle is a useful tool for solving problems and making decisions. It helps to ensure that all relevant information is considered and that decisions are based on evidence.

The Straw Man Proposal is a brainstorming-like method for problem solving developed by McKinsey. It involves rapidly generating a large number of potential solutions to a problem, then evaluating and selecting the best one. The goal is to come up with an innovative solution that is feasible and superior to existing solutions. The technique is named after the “straw man” used in legal arguments, which is a weak or easily refuted opponent that is used to make the argument look stronger . In the same way, the Straw Man Proposal allows ideas to be quickly evaluated and rejected if they are not viable, leaving only the strongest ones remaining. This makes it an effective tool for finding creative solutions to complex problems. While it is often used by businesses, the Straw Man Proposal can be adapted for use in any situation where problem solving is needed.

The acronym STEPPA stands for Subject, Target Identification, Emotion, Perception, Plan, Pace, and Action . Each of these components is essential for successful goal-setting and achievement. The first step, Subject, involves identifying what area of your life you want to improve. The second step, Target Identification, helps you to zero in on specific goals that you would like to achieve. The third step, Emotion, involves exploring the feelings that are associated with your goals. The fourth step, Perception, is about how you see yourself achieving your goals. The fifth step, Plan, helps you to develop a specific plan of action for achieving your goals. And finally, the sixth and seventh steps, Pace and Action, involve taking concrete steps towards achieving your goals. By following the STEPPA Coaching Model, you can set and achieve any goal that you desire.

The ESH Framework is a systems approach to organizational management and change that was developed by Dutch organizational theorists Mathieu Weggeman and Geert Hofstede . The framework is based on the premise that organizations are composed of five interrelated subsystems: strategy, structure, personnel, culture, and management styles . Each of these subsystems exerts a unique influence on organizational behavior and performance. To be effective, organizations must maintain a balance between these subsystems ( evenwicht ), as well as a sense of cohesion ( samenhang ) and diversity ( heterogeneity ). The ESH Framework provides a comprehensive and systematic way of understanding how organizations function and how they can be managed effectively. It is a useful tool for both practitioners and researchers alike.

The model was developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study in 1987 and has since been adopted by many school districts across the United States.
The 5E model is comprised of five stages:
The first stage, Engage, is designed to capture students’ attention and interest in the topic. The second stage, Explore, allows students to investigate the topic and form their own hypotheses. In the third stage, Explain, students share their hypotheses with the class and receive feedback from the teacher. The fourth stage, Elaborate, gives students an opportunity to practice what they have learned. Finally, in the fifth stage, Evaluate, students reflect on their learning and assess their understanding of the material. The 5E learning model is an effective way to engage students in active learning and promote a deep understanding of content.

The Stepladder Technique is a structured brainstorming method that can be used by groups of people to generate ideas and solve problems. The technique was first developed by Steven Rogelberg, Janet Barnes-Farrell, and Charles Lowe in 1992 . The process involves each member of the group working individually to generate ideas on a topic or problem. Once all members have generated their ideas, they then share their ideas with the person next to them and build on those ideas to create a “ladder” of solutions. This process is then repeated until all members of the group have had a chance to contribute. Once the ladder is complete, the group can then discuss the options and make a decision. The Stepladder Technique is an effective way to generate a large number of ideas and find creative solutions to problems. Perceptual positions are a neuro-linguistic programming and psychology term that refers to the three different ways we can view a situation. The first position is the ‘I, self’ position, where we view the situation from our own perspective. The second position is the ‘the other’ position, where we view the situation from the perspective of another person. The third position is the ‘the observer’ position, where we view the situation from an objective, detached perspective. By understanding and utilizing all three positions, we can gain a complete understanding of a situation and make more effective decisions.

Visualizing Problem-solving in your PowerPoint Presentations
![presentation on solving a problem Get Creative When Visualizing Problem-solving in your PowerPoint Presentations](https://www.chillibreeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Get-Creative-When-Visualizing-Problem-solving-in-your-PowerPoint-Presentations.png)
Business processes need to be constantly improved and refined to keep up with the dynamic market scenarios.
We are always on the lookout for faster and better ways to work and solve problems in our daily work.
There are many tools used by business and consultancy for looking into their process and figuring out the best way to problem-solving.
Some common tools used by most consultants are Root Cause Analytics, Porter’s 5 Forces, the BCG Growth-Share Matrix, The GE McKinsey Nine-Box Matrix, Porter 5 force analysis, SWOT Analysis and so on.
When you are presenting a solution to your clients, you also want to convince them of the output and how you got there.
The presenting part is easy, but what about the convincing part?
Here is where the visualizing problem-solving in your PowerPoint presentations comes to play.
Only facts and no visualizing can be mind-numbing. Especially when you are trying to convince a client to purchase your solution.
How do you layout problem-solving visually?
There is no one-way to visualizing problem-solving through your slides.
Here at Chillibreeze, we work through the 3-levels of formatting to help our customers visualize something .
Depending on the stage of the problem-solving, we pick the right visuals/approach to use.
Sometimes it is a collaborative effort when we sit with our customers to get the best visualization solution for a slide.
Are you Formatting Your Presentation to the Right Level
Here is an important fact.
The attention rate is highest at the first and last 5 minutes of your presentation.
The opening and the closing. Make the best use of that time.
And here’s a little PowerPoint design tip: If you apply the 3 levels of formatting to your slides, apply level 3 to a few slides at the beginning and end of your presentation.
Here is a clean and perfect way you can visually communicate using DMAIC.
![presentation on solving a problem DMAIC-274125-edited](https://www.chillibreeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/DMAIC-274125-edited.png)
Adding animation along with each process enhances the effectiveness of your message.
The layout depends on the depth of your content and the project type you’re handling.
When you have a detailed structure of the whole DMAIC process having a navigation path is the best option. This way you can link the slides back and forth.
If you are using a navigation path, replace the abbreviations with icons. Color coding the icons and the content that comes along with the process helps keep the flow.
![presentation on solving a problem DMAIC option](https://www.chillibreeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/DMAIC-option-e1555594600258.png)
You can place the icons representing the 5 stages on the top corner of each slide or on the left-hand side and highlight them when the slides are talking about one or the other process.
Now going a little deeper into each process.
A process defining project goals, problems, the opportunity for improvements and requirements.
This can be visualized in the form of a workflow diagram or a process map.

M - Measure
As the saying goes, “you get what you measure.”
In this case…
“What you see is what you get”
The best way to visualize the measure is through charts because they are mostly data based.
Visualizing data can be challenging.
Use line or bar charts to visualize data more effectively.
![presentation on solving a problem](https://www.chillibreeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Measure-422487-edited.png)
A - Analyze
There are many ways you can visualize the analysis of your project. Like the RACI chart, maturity models, business cases, Pareto chart, scatter diagram, and so on.
The common tool used for analysis is the fishbone diagram which identifies the causes and effect or problem.
![presentation on solving a problem Analyse-204872](https://www.chillibreeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Analyse-204872-edited.png)
I - Improve
Counter Measure Matrix an evaluation tool, is a plain-looking table that can bore you to death.
Those ordinary looking excel sheets crunched with data and figures.
But why stick to that if you can make it more appealing to the eye.
![presentation on solving a problem](https://www.chillibreeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Improve-306879-edited.png)
C - Control
A workflow or a flow chart is used to visualize Control.
![presentation on solving a problem](https://www.chillibreeze.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Control-224004-edited.png)

CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING What is creative problem solving? Optimist International
Some Additional Thoughts • The creative person uses information to form new ideas. • The real key to creative problem solving is what you do with the knowledge. • Creative problem solving requires an attitude that allows you to search for new ideas and use your knowledge and experience. • Change perspective and use knowledge to make the ordinary extraordinary and the usual commonplace. Optimist International
DEFINITION Creative problem solving is - Optimist International
DEFINITION “Creative problem solving is - looking at the same thing as everyone else and thinking something different.” Adapted from a famous quote from a former Nobel prize winner, Albert Szent-Gyorgi. Optimist International
EXERCISE Optimist International
A SOLUTION Optimist International
LET’S TALK ABOUT: Why don’t we think creatively more often? What are the barriers that get in our way? Optimist International
BARRIERS THAT GET IN OUR WAY • Time • Why change? • Usually don’t need to be creative • Habit • Routine • Haven’t been taught to be creative What are some other barriers that get in our way? Optimist International
MENTAL BLOCKS Mental blocks are reasons (attitudes) why we don’t “think something different.” Optimist International
MENTAL BLOCKS 1. The _______ answer. 2. That’s not _________. 3. __________ the rules. 4. Be ______________. 5. ________ is frivolous. 6. That’s not my _____. 7. ________ ambiguity. 8. Don’t be _________. 9. __________is wrong. 10. I’m not __________. Optimist International
MENTAL BLOCK # 1 • The right answer. Only one? Optimist International
MENTAL BLOCK # 2 • The right answer. • That’s not logical. Optimist International
MENTAL BLOCK # 3 Why rules should be challenged: • 1. We make rules based on reasons that make a lot of sense. • 2. We follow these rules. • 3. Time passes, and things change. • 4. The original reasons for the generation of these rules may no longer exist, but because the rules are still in place, we continue to follow them. • The right answer. • That’s not logical. • Follow the rules. Optimist International
MENTAL BLOCK # 4 • The right answer. • That’s not logical. • Follow the rules. • Be practical. Optimist International
MENTAL BLOCK # 5 • The right answer. • That’s not logical. • Follow the rules. • Be practical. • Play is frivolous. “When do you get your best ideas?” Optimist International
MENTAL BLOCK # 6 • That’s not my area. Optimist International
MENTAL BLOCK # 7 • That’s not my area. • Avoid ambiguity. AMBIGUITY Optimist International
MENTAL BLOCK # 8 • That’s not my area. • Avoid ambiguity. • Don’t be foolish. Optimist International
MENTAL BLOCK # 9 • That’s not my area. • Avoid ambiguity. • Don’t be foolish. • To err is wrong. Optimist International
MENTAL BLOCK # 10 • That’s not my area. • Avoid ambiguity. • Don’t be foolish. • To err is wrong. • I’m not creative. Optimist International
BEING MORE CREATIVE How can we be more creative? Jot down at least 3 ideas that come to your mind. Optimist International
Golden Rules of Creative Thinking • Start small trying to discover new ways to be creative, ___________. • __________ to abandon the old, obsolete ways of doing things and explore new ways. • It is not possible to change the way we think about everything. ________ in which to try creative thinking techniques. • Understand that creative thinking requires __________, but it is worth it! • Remember that creative thinking is both _______ and__________!!! Optimist International
Golden Rules of Creative Thinking (Continued) • _________ on what you can reasonably do. Trying to do too many things at once compromises the effort and may take away from the results. • _________creative thinking for today as well as tomorrow. • Include other people in the creative thinking process with you. __________fosters creative thinking. • Include _______ and ______ in your creative thinking process as well as ___________. • Keep ________________. Optimist International
CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS STEP 1. State what appears to be the problem. The real problem may not surface until facts have been gathered and analyzed. Therefore, start with what you assume to be the problem, that can later be confirmed or corrected. Optimist International
CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS STEP 2. Gather facts, feelings and opinions. What happened? Where, when and how did it occur? What is it’s size, scope, and severity? Who and what is affected? Likely to happen again? Need to be corrected? May need to assign priorities to critical elements. Optimist International
CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS STEP 3. Restate the problem. The real facts help make this possible, and provide supporting data. The actual problem may, or may not be the same as stated in Step 1. Optimist International
CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS STEP 4. Identify alternative solutions. Generate ideas. Do not eliminate any possible solutions until several have been discussed. Optimist International
CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS STEP 5. Evaluate alternatives. Which will provide the optimum solution? What are the risks? Are costs in keeping with the benefits? Will the solution create new problems? Optimist International
CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS STEP 6. Implement the decision! Who must be involved? To what extent? How, when and where? Who will the decision impact? What might go wrong? How will the results be reported and verified? Optimist International
CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS STEP 7. Evaluate the results. Test the solution against the desired results. Make revisions if necessary. Optimist International
10 Questions To Encourage Ideas • What if…? • How can we improve…? • How will the Optimist Member and/or the community benefit? • Are we forgetting anything? • What’s the next step? Optimist International
10 Questions To Encourage Ideas • What can we do better…? • What do you think about…? • What should we add? • What should we eliminate? • What other ideas do you have...? Optimist International
TOOLS & TECHNIQUES BRAINSTORMING Purpose: To generate a large number of ideas in a short period of time. Optimist International
BRAINSTORMING Rules for Brainstorming: • The more ideas the better! • No discussion • No idea is a bad idea • Build on one another’s ideas • Display all ideas Optimist International
BRAINSTORMING EXERCISE How Do We Motivate Our Local Optimist Club Members? Ideas: Freely record your ideas as they come to your mind. Optimist International
Re-state the question to keep the process going Remember Creative Thinking What did you mean by that?!!! BRAINSTORMING GUIDELINES 1. Practice question:How Do We Motivate Our Local Optimist Club Members? 2. Clarify understanding. Once all the ideas have been generated (it may take approximately 5 to 6 minutes),review ideas offered. Optimist International
Let’s combine ideas!!! Are wedone yet? BRAINSTORMING GUIDELINES 3. Combine items that are similar and/or eliminate duplicates. 4. Completion. Optimist International
TOOLS & TECHNIQUES - MULTIVOTING • Purpose: To help a group of people make a decision with which they are comfortable. • Definition: A way to vote to select the most important or popular items (alternatives) from a list. Optimist International
Multivoting List 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Revised List 1. 2. 3. MULTIVOTING Steps 1. Generate a list of items and number each item. 2. If two or more items seem similar, they may be combined. 3. If necessary, renumber the items. Optimist International
MULTIVOTING Steps (Continued) 4. Write down the numbers of the items you feel are the major cause of the problem. 5. Share your votes by a show of hands. 6. Eliminate those items with the fewest votes. 7. Repeat steps 3 (renumber) through 6 on the list of remaining items. Continue this process until only a few items remain. If a clear favorite does not emerge, the group may discuss the items listed and make a choice. Optimist International
MIND MAPPING • Definition : A visual picture of a group of ideas, concepts or issues. • Purpose : • Unblock our thinking. • See an entire idea or several ideas on one sheet of paper. • See how ideas relate to one another. • Look at things in a new and different way. • Look at an idea in depth. Optimist International
Motivating Members Methods How Think freely!! Mind Mapping Exercise 1. Initial Tumble of Ideas. • Over-sized blank sheet of paper. • Select word, phrase or problem statement to serve as a focus for discussion. • Print it in the middle of the paper. Enclose it in a box or oval. • Let a word pop out of your mind. Print it anywhere on the paper. • Underline it and connect the line with the problem statement (or key phrase or word) you are working. • Record the next idea and connect it to original focus point or the prior thought. • Continue printing and connecting words. Optimist International
Motivating Members People Helping Others Purpose Resources Results Methods Fun Learning How Mind Mapping Exercise EXAMPLE Optimist International
Mind Mapping Exercise-- Helpful Hints A • Keep your printing large and easy to read. • Feel free to use symbols and or pictures. • Have some fun using different colors. Optimist International
Have Fun Drawing Your Own Mind Map! COMPLETED MAP • Draw over clusters of similar thoughts that are associated with the main focus point. Have fun using a different color highlighter with each cluster of words. • How do the variety of ideas relate to one another? • Do you notice any common causes of the problem? What are the most important causes? • You are now ready to brainstorm solutions! Optimist International

Effective Problem-Solving Techniques in Business
Problem solving is an increasingly important soft skill for those in business. The Future of Jobs Survey by the World Economic Forum drives this point home. According to this report, complex problem solving is identified as one of the top 15 skills that will be sought by employers in 2025, along with other soft skills such as analytical thinking, creativity and leadership.
Dr. Amy David , clinical associate professor of management for supply chain and operations management, spoke about business problem-solving methods and how the Purdue University Online MBA program prepares students to be business decision-makers.
Why Are Problem-Solving Skills Essential in Leadership Roles?
Every business will face challenges at some point. Those that are successful will have people in place who can identify and solve problems before the damage is done.
“The business world is constantly changing, and companies need to be able to adapt well in order to produce good results and meet the needs of their customers,” David says. “They also need to keep in mind the triple bottom line of ‘people, profit and planet.’ And these priorities are constantly evolving.”
To that end, David says people in management or leadership need to be able to handle new situations, something that may be outside the scope of their everyday work.
“The name of the game these days is change—and the speed of change—and that means solving new problems on a daily basis,” she says.
The pace of information and technology has also empowered the customer in a new way that provides challenges—or opportunities—for businesses to respond.
“Our customers have a lot more information and a lot more power,” she says. “If you think about somebody having an unhappy experience and tweeting about it, that’s very different from maybe 15 years ago. Back then, if you had a bad experience with a product, you might grumble about it to one or two people.”
David says that this reality changes how quickly organizations need to react and respond to their customers. And taking prompt and decisive action requires solid problem-solving skills.
What Are Some of the Most Effective Problem-Solving Methods?
David says there are a few things to consider when encountering a challenge in business.
“When faced with a problem, are we talking about something that is broad and affects a lot of people? Or is it something that affects a select few? Depending on the issue and situation, you’ll need to use different types of problem-solving strategies,” she says.
Using Techniques
There are a number of techniques that businesses use to problem solve. These can include:
- Five Whys : This approach is helpful when the problem at hand is clear but the underlying causes are less so. By asking “Why?” five times, the final answer should get at the potential root of the problem and perhaps yield a solution.
- Gap Analysis : Companies use gap analyses to compare current performance with expected or desired performance, which will help a company determine how to use its resources differently or adjust expectations.
- Gemba Walk : The name, which is derived from a Japanese word meaning “the real place,” refers to a commonly used technique that allows managers to see what works (and what doesn’t) from the ground up. This is an opportunity for managers to focus on the fundamental elements of the process, identify where the value stream is and determine areas that could use improvement.
- Porter’s Five Forces : Developed by Harvard Business School professor Michael E. Porter, applying the Five Forces is a way for companies to identify competitors for their business or services, and determine how the organization can adjust to stay ahead of the game.
- Six Thinking Hats : In his book of the same name, Dr. Edward de Bono details this method that encourages parallel thinking and attempting to solve a problem by trying on different “thinking hats.” Each color hat signifies a different approach that can be utilized in the problem-solving process, ranging from logic to feelings to creativity and beyond. This method allows organizations to view problems from different angles and perspectives.
- SWOT Analysis : This common strategic planning and management tool helps businesses identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT).
“We have a lot of these different tools,” David says. “Which one to use when is going to be dependent on the problem itself, the level of the stakeholders, the number of different stakeholder groups and so on.”
Each of the techniques outlined above uses the same core steps of problem solving:
- Identify and define the problem
- Consider possible solutions
- Evaluate options
- Choose the best solution
- Implement the solution
- Evaluate the outcome
Data drives a lot of daily decisions in business and beyond. Analytics have also been deployed to problem solve.
“We have specific classes around storytelling with data and how you convince your audience to understand what the data is,” David says. “Your audience has to trust the data, and only then can you use it for real decision-making.”
Data can be a powerful tool for identifying larger trends and making informed decisions when it’s clearly understood and communicated. It’s also vital for performance monitoring and optimization.
How Is Problem Solving Prioritized in Purdue’s Online MBA?
The courses in the Purdue Online MBA program teach problem-solving methods to students, keeping them up to date with the latest techniques and allowing them to apply their knowledge to business-related scenarios.
“I can give you a model or a tool, but most of the time, a real-world situation is going to be a lot messier and more valuable than what we’ve seen in a textbook,” David says. “Asking students to take what they know and apply it to a case where there’s not one single correct answer is a big part of the learning experience.”

Respect the worth of other people's insights
Problems continuously arise in organizational life, making problem-solving an essential skill for leaders. Leaders who are good at tackling conundrums are likely to be more effective at overcoming obstacles and guiding their teams to achieve their goals. So, what’s the secret to better problem-solving skills?
1. Understand the root cause of the problem
“Too often, people fail because they haven’t correctly defined what the problem is,” says David Ross, an international strategist, founder of consultancy Phoenix Strategic Management and author of Confronting the Storm: Regenerating Leadership and Hope in the Age of Uncertainty .
Ross explains that as teams grapple with “wicked” problems – those where there can be several root causes for why a problem exists – there can often be disagreement on the initial assumptions made. As a result, their chances of successfully solving the problem are low.
“Before commencing the process of solving the problem, it is worthwhile identifying who your key stakeholders are and talking to them about the issue,” Ross recommends. “Who could be affected by the issue? What is the problem – and why? How are people affected?”
He argues that if leaders treat people with dignity, respecting the worth of their insights, they are more likely to successfully solve problems.
Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024
Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, 2. unfocus the mind.
“To solve problems, we need to commit to making time to face a problem in its full complexity, which also requires that we take back control of our thinking,” says Chris Griffiths, an expert on creativity and innovative thinking skills, founder and CEO of software provider OpenGenius, and co-author of The Focus Fix: Finding Clarity, Creativity and Resilience in an Overwhelming World .
To do this, it’s necessary to harness the power of the unfocused mind, according to Griffiths. “It might sound oxymoronic, but just like our devices, our brain needs time to recharge,” he says. “ A plethora of research has shown that daydreaming allows us to make creative connections and see abstract solutions that are not obvious when we’re engaged in direct work.”
To make use of the unfocused mind in problem solving, you must begin by getting to know the problem from all angles. “At this stage, don’t worry about actually solving the problem,” says Griffiths. “You’re simply giving your subconscious mind the information it needs to get creative with when you zone out. From here, pick a monotonous or rhythmic activity that will help you to activate the daydreaming state – that might be a walk, some doodling, or even some chores.”
Do this regularly, argues Griffiths, and you’ll soon find that flashes of inspiration and novel solutions naturally present themselves while you’re ostensibly thinking of other things. He says: “By allowing you to access the fullest creative potential of your own brain, daydreaming acts as a skeleton key for a wide range of problems.”
3. Be comfortable making judgment calls
“Admitting to not knowing the future takes courage,” says Professor Stephen Wyatt, founder and lead consultant at consultancy Corporate Rebirth and author of Antidote to the Crisis of Leadership: Opportunity in Complexity . “Leaders are worried our teams won’t respect us and our boards will lose faith in us, but what doesn’t work is drawing up plans and forecasts and holding yourself or others rigidly to them.”
Wyatt advises leaders to heighten their situational awareness – to look broadly, integrate more perspectives and be able to connect the dots. “We need to be comfortable in making judgment calls as the future is unknown,” he says. “There is no data on it. But equally, very few initiatives cannot be adjusted, refined or reviewed while in motion.”
Leaders need to stay vigilant, according to Wyatt, create the capacity of the enterprise to adapt and maintain the support of stakeholders. “The concept of the infallible leader needs to be updated,” he concludes.
4. Be prepared to fail and learn
“Organisations, and arguably society more widely, are obsessed with problems and the notion of problems,” says Steve Hearsum, founder of organizational change consultancy Edge + Stretch and author of No Silver Bullet: Bursting the Bubble of the Organisational Quick Fix .
Hearsum argues that this tendency is complicated by the myth of fixability, namely the idea that all problems, however complex, have a solution. “Our need for certainty, to minimize and dampen the anxiety of ‘not knowing,’ leads us to oversimplify and ignore or filter out anything that challenges the idea that there is a solution,” he says.
Leaders need to shift their mindset to cultivate their comfort with not knowing and couple that with being OK with being wrong, sometimes, notes Hearsum. He adds: “That means developing reflexivity to understand your own beliefs and judgments, and what influences these, asking questions and experimenting.”
5. Unleash the power of empathy
Leaders must be able to communicate problems in order to find solutions to them. But they should avoid bombarding their teams with complex, technical details since these can overwhelm their people’s cognitive load, says Dr Jessica Barker MBE , author of Hacked: The Secrets Behind Cyber Attacks .
Instead, she recommends that leaders frame their messages in ways that cut through jargon and ensure that their advice is relevant, accessible and actionable. “An essential leadership skill for this is empathy,” Barker explains. “When you’re trying to build a positive culture, it is crucial to understand why people are not practicing the behaviors you want rather than trying to force that behavioral change with fear, uncertainty and doubt.”

Government alone cannot solve house challenges in Lagos – Gov Sanwo-Olu
![presentation on solving a problem presentation on solving a problem](https://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/Sanwo-Olu-.jpg)
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, on Tuesday, said that the state government cannot solve the housing problem alone, but promised to bridge the deficit in the state.
Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed this during the commissioning of Lagos Building Investment Company and the Rising Lagos Apartment in the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of the state.
He said: “I must commend and congratulate once again the leadership of LBIC and our Public Private Partner, WGC for their dedication, for their innovative mind and their promotion of excellence in bringing these projects to fruition for our citizens.
“Let me reiterate that the government alone cannot solve these housing challenges in Lagos. We will keep exploring innovative solutions. We will keep forming real, genuine partnerships.
“We will keep investing in sustainable development to ensure that as much as possible, as humanly possible, every Lagos resident that deserves has access to a decent and affordable housing need.
“I want to encourage and urge the private sector and all other stakeholders in real estate to continue to seize the abandoned opportunities that abound in our states and our city and to extend a hand of partnership with administration.
“Together, we believe that we can provide much-needed housing needs that will indeed take a greater Lagos conversation, take it to a reality.”
Earlier, Managing Director, LBIC, Olusola Faleye, had stated that the scheme was a significant achievement for the state government and its resident.
