10 Breakthrough Technologies 2024

Every year, we look for promising technologies poised to have a real impact on the world. Here are the advances that we think matter most right now.

AI for everything

We now live in the age of AI. Hundreds of millions of people have interacted directly with generative tools like ChatGPT that produce text, images, videos, and more from prompts. Their popularity has reshaped the tech industry, making OpenAI a household name and compelling Google, Meta, and Microsoft to invest heavily in the technology.

Super-efficient solar cells

Solar power is being rapidly deployed around the world, and it’s key to global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. But most of the sunlight that hits today’s panels isn’t being converted into electricity. Adding a layer of tiny crystals could make solar panels more efficient.

Apple Vision Pro

Apple will start shipping its first mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, this year. Its killer feature is the highest-resolution display ever made for such a device. Will there be a killer app? It’s early, but the world’s most valuable company has made a bold bet that the answer is yes.

Weight-loss drugs.

The global rise in obesity has been called an epidemic by the World Health Organization. Medications like Mounjaro and Wegovy are now among the most powerful tools that patients and physicians have to treat it. Evidence suggests they can even protect against heart attacks and strokes.

Enhanced geothermal systems

Geothermal energy is clean, always available, and virtually limitless. However, because of engineering challenges, we have barely scratched the surface of what it can offer. New drilling techniques, which dig deeper and in places where we couldn’t before, are unleashing more of Earth’s heat to produce clean energy.

It’s getting devilishly hard to make transistors smaller—the trend that defines Moore’s Law and has driven progress in computing for decades. Engineers must now find new ways to make computers faster and more efficient. Chiplets are small, specialized chips that can be linked together to do everything a conventional chip does, and more.

Something went wrong, try again., the first gene-editing treatment.

New treatments based on CRISPR have been in the works for years. In the final weeks of 2023, one from Vertex became the first to earn regulatory approval in both the UK and the US for its ability to cure sickle-cell disease, a life-threatening condition. It won’t be the last.

Exascale computers

The world’s fastest supercomputers can now perform more than an exaflop’s worth of calculations (that’s a 1 followed by 18 zeros). New machines that can crunch scientific data at these speeds will enable scientists to perform more sophisticated simulations of the climate, nuclear fission, turbulence, and more.

A pill for covid

Don’t let the name fool you. Heat pumps are electric appliances that can both cool and heat buildings, and wider adoption could substantially reduce emissions. Sales have increased around the world; in the US, they have surpassed gas furnaces for the first time. New types that run at higher temperatures could help decarbonize industry, too.

Twitter killers

Elon Musk bought the site now known as X in 2022, and virtually nothing about it has been the same since. He fired most of the staff and dispensed with content moderation, scaring off advertisers and users alike. Now, as alternatives like Bluesky, Threads, and others gain ground, the central town square has given way to private rooms.

Listen to the article

  • We’ll experience more technological progress in the coming decade than we did in the preceding 100 years put together, says McKinsey.
  • And 10 tech trends will dominate this shifting landscape.
  • Understanding the effects of this change can help avoid nasty shocks to the system, for both individuals and organizations.
  • Businesses that are making the most of advances in tech are also in a good place to make the most in terms of return on their investments.

The pace of change in the technology sector has always been brisk. As much as 10 years worth of growth in e-commerce may have been compressed into just three months in late 2019, according to McKinsey & Company, which predicts that we’ll experience more technological progress in the coming decade than we did in the preceding 100 years put together.

Any change can be unsettling and keeping pace with developments even more so. Part of the challenge is knowing which are the most significant changes and which are the ones that are less likely to bear fruit.

According to McKinsey, these are the 10 top technologies attracting the attention and funds of investors and technologists . They are also the ones most likely to feature prominently in the changing face of the modern workplace. Understanding the impact these tech trends will have on organizations and on the people whose jobs will be affected, could be key to avoiding any of the worst downsides of the disruption that may follow.

Top Tech Trends

tech-trends-2022

1. Process automation and virtualization

Around half of all existing work activities could be automated in the next few decades, as next-level process automation and virtualization become more commonplace.

“By 2025, more than 50 billion devices will be connected to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT),” McKinsey predicts. Robots, automation, 3D-printing, and more will generate around 79.4 zettabytes of data per year.

The future of jobs report 2023, how to follow the growth summit 2023, 2. the future of connectivity.

Faster digital connections, powered by 5G and the IoT, have the potential to unlock economic activity. So much so that implementing faster connections in “mobility, healthcare, manufacturing and retail could increase global GDP by $1.2 trillion to $2 trillion by 2030.” 5G and IoT will be one of the most-watched tech trends for the next decade.

“Far-greater network availability and capability will drive broad shifts in the business landscape, from the digitization of manufacturing (through wireless control of mobile tools, machines and robots) to decentralized energy delivery and remote patient monitoring.”

3. Distributed infrastructure

By 2022, 70% of companies will be using hybrid-cloud or multi-cloud platforms as part of a distributed IT infrastructure. It will mean data and processing can be handled in the cloud but made accessible to devices faster.

“This tech trend will help companies boost their speed and agility, reduce complexity, save costs and strengthen their cybersecurity defenses,” McKinsey says.

Tech-trends-affect-all-sectors

4. Next-generation computing

Next-generation computing will, McKinsey believes, “help find answers to problems that have bedevilled science and society for years, unlocking unprecedented capabilities for businesses”.

It includes a host of far-reaching developments, from quantum AI to fully autonomous vehicles, and as such won’t be an immediate concern for all organizations. “Preparing for next-generation computing requires identifying whether you’re in a first-wave industry (such as finance, travel, logistics, global energy and materials, and advanced industries),” McKinsey says, or “whether your business depends on trade secrets and other data that must be safeguarded during the shift from current to quantum cryptography.”

5. Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI is one of the biggest tech trends. We are still only in the early days of the development of AI. As the technology becomes more sophisticated, it will be applied to further develop tech-based tools, such as training machines to recognize patterns, then act upon what it has detected.

By 2024, AI-generated speech will be behind more than 50% of people’s interactions with computers. Companies are still searching for ways to use AI effectively though, the consultancy says: “While any company can get good value from AI if it’s applied effectively and in a repeatable way, less than one-quarter of respondents report significant bottom-line impact.”

Effects-of-tech-trends-2050

6. Future of programming

Get ready for Software 2.0, where neural networks and machine learning write code and create new software. “This tech trend makes possible the rapid scaling and diffusion of new data-rich, AI-driven applications,” according to McKinsey.

In part, it could see the creation of software applications far more powerful and capable than anything available today. But it will also make it possible for existing software and coding processes to be standardized and automated.

7. Trust architecture

In 2019, more than 8.5 billion data records were compromised. Despite advances in cybersecurity , criminals continue to redouble their efforts. Being a growing tech trend, trust architectures will help in the fight against cybercrime.

One approach to building a trust architecture is the use of distributed ledgers, such as blockchain. “In addition to lowering the risk of breaches, trust architectures reduce the cost of complying with security regulations, lower the operating and capital expenditures associated with cybersecurity, and enable more cost-efficient transactions, for instance, between buyers and sellers,” McKinsey notes.

The Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2023 report outlined the technologies poised to positively impact society in the next few years, from health technology to AI to sustainable computing.

The World Economic Forum’s Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution is driving responsible technology governance, enabling industry transformation, addressing planetary health, and promoting equity and inclusion.

8. Bio Revolution

There is a “confluence of advances in biological science” that “promises a significant impact on economies and our lives and will affect industries from health and agriculture to consumer goods, energy and materials.”

Propelled by AI, automation and DNA sequencing, the bio revolution promises the development of gene-therapies, hyper-personalized medicines and genetics-based guidance on food and exercise. These tech trends will create new markets but will also raise some important ethical questions. “Organizations need to assess their bQ or biological quotient – the extent to which they understand biological science and its implications. They should then sort out the resources they need to allocate to biological technologies and capabilities and whether to integrate those into their existing R&D or partner with science-based start-ups,” McKinsey says.

9. Next-generation materials

Developments in materials science have the potential to transform multiple market sectors, including pharma, energy, transportation, health, semiconductors and manufacturing. Such materials include graphene – a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice configuration, which is around 200 times stronger than steel, despite its incredible thinness. It is also a very efficient conductor and promises to revolutionize semiconductor performance. Another is molybdenum disulfide – nanoparticles of which are already being used in flexible electronics.

“By changing the economics of a wide range of products and services, next-generation materials with significantly higher efficiency in many as-yet-untouched application areas may well change industry economics and reconfigure companies within them,” McKinsey says.

10. Future of clean tech trends

Renewable energy, cleaner/greener transport, energy-efficient buildings, and sustainable water consumption are at the heart of clean tech trends. As the costs associated with clean-tech fall, their use becomes more widespread and their disruption is felt across a growing number of industries

“Companies must keep pace with emerging business-building opportunities by designing operational-improvement programmes relating to technology development, procurement, manufacturing and cost reduction,” McKinsey believes. “Advancing clean technologies also promises an abundant supply of green energy to sustain exponential technology growth, for instance, in high-power computing.”

Formerly a new technology trend to watch, cloud computing has become mainstream, with major players AWS (Amazon Web Services), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform dominating the market. The adoption of cloud computing is still growing, as more and more businesses migrate to a cloud solution. But it’s no longer the emerging technology trend. Edge is.

As the quantity of data organizations is dealing with continues to increase, they have realized the shortcomings of cloud computing in some situations. Edge computing is designed to help solve some of those problems as a way to bypass the latency caused by cloud computing and getting data to a data center for processing. It can exist “on the edge,” if you will, closer to where computing needs to happen. For this reason, edge computing can be used to process time-sensitive data in remote locations with limited or no connectivity to a centralized location. In those situations, edge computing can act like mini datacenters.

Keeping in line with cloud computing (including new-age edge and quantum computing) will help you grab amazing jobs like:

  • Cloud Reliability Engineer
  • Cloud Infrastructure Engineer
  • Cloud Architect and Security Architect
  • DevOps Cloud Engineer

The next remarkable technology trend is quantum computing , which is a form of computing that takes advantage of quantum phenomena like superposition and quantum entanglement. This amazing technology trend is also involved in preventing the spread of the coronavirus, and to develop potential vaccines, thanks to its ability to easily query, monitor, analyze and act on data, regardless of the source. Another field where quantum computing is finding applications is banking and finance, to manage credit risk, for high-frequency trading and fraud detection.

Quantum computers are now a multitude times faster than regular computers and huge brands like Splunk, Honeywell, Microsoft, AWS, Google and many others are now involved in making innovations in the field of Quantum Computing. The revenues for the global quantum computing market are projected to surpass $2.5 billion by 2029. And to make a mark in this new trending technology, you need to have experience with quantum mechanics, linear algebra, probability, information theory, and machine learning.

The next exceptional technology trend - Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), and Extended Reality (ER). VR immerses the user in an environment while AR enhances their environment. Although this technology trend has primarily been used for gaming thus far, it has also been used for training, as with VirtualShip , a simulation software used to train U.S. Navy, Army and Coast Guard ship captains.

In 2024, we can expect these forms of technologies being further integrated into our lives. Usually working in tandem with some of the other emerging technologies we’ve mentioned in this list, AR and VR have enormous potential in training, entertainment, education, marketing, and even rehabilitation after an injury. Either could be used to train doctors to do surgery, offer museum goers a deeper experience, enhance theme parks, or even enhance marketing, as with this Pepsi Max bus shelter .

While some employers might look for optics as a skill-set, note that getting started in VR doesn’t require a lot of specialized knowledge - basic programming skills and a forward-thinking mindset can land a job; another reason why this new technology trend should make up to your list of lookouts!

Although most people think of blockchain technology in relation to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, blockchain offers security that is useful in many other ways. In simplest terms, blockchain can be described as data you can only add to, not take away from, or change. Hence the term “chain” because you’re making a chain of data. Not being able to change the previous blocks is what makes it so secure. In addition, blockchains are consensus-driven, so no one entity can take control of the data. With blockchain, you don’t need a trusted third party to oversee or validate transactions.

Several industries are involving and implementing blockchain, and as blockchain technology's use increases, so does the demand for skilled professionals. From a birds eye view, a blockchain developer specializes in developing and implementing architecture and solutions using blockchain technology.

If you are intrigued by Blockchain and its applications and want to make your career in this trending technology, then this is the right time to start. To get into Blockchain, you need hands-on experience in programming languages, OOPS fundamentals, flat and relational databases, data structures, web app development, and networking. Mastering blockchain can help you scale up in a variety of fields and industries:

  • Risk Analyst
  • Tech Architect
  • Crypto Community Manager
  • Front End Engineer

Another promising new technology trend is IoT. Many “things” are now being built with WiFi connectivity, meaning they can be connected to the Internet—and to each other. Hence, the Internet of Things, or IoT. The Internet of Things is the future, and has already enabled devices, home appliances, cars and much more to be connected to and exchange data over the Internet.

As consumers, we’re already using and benefitting from IoT. We can lock our doors remotely if we forget to when we leave for work and preheat our ovens on our way home from work, all while tracking our fitness on our Fitbits. However, businesses also have much to gain now and in the near future. The IoT can enable better safety, efficiency and decision making for businesses as data is collected and analyzed. It can enable predictive maintenance, speed up medical care, improve customer service, and offer benefits we haven’t even imagined yet.

And we’re only in the beginning stages of this new technology trend: Forecasts suggest that by 2030 around 50 billion of these IoT devices will be in use around the world, creating a massive web of interconnected devices spanning everything from smartphones to kitchen appliances. And if you wish to step foot in this trending technology, you will have to learn about Information security, AI and machine learning fundamentals, networking, hardware interfacing, data analytics , automation, understanding of embedded systems, and must have device and design knowledge.

The next technology trend that follows the IoT is 5G. Where 3G and 4G technologies have enabled us to browse the internet, use data-driven services, increased bandwidths for streaming on Spotify or YouTube and so much more, 5G services are expected to revolutionize our lives. By enabling services that rely on advanced technologies like AR and VR, alongside cloud-based gaming services like Google Stadia, NVidia GeForce Now and much more. It is expected to be used in factories, HD cameras that help improve safety and traffic management, smart grid control and smart retail too.

Just about every telecom company like Verizon, Tmobile, Apple, Nokia Corp, QualComm, are now working on creating 5G applications. 5G Network subscriptions will reach 4.4 billion by the end of 2027 , making it an emerging technology trend you must watch out for, and also save a spot in.

Cyber security might not seem like an emerging new technology trend, given that it has been around for a while, but it is evolving just as other technologies are. That’s in part because threats are constantly new. The malevolent hackers trying to access data illegally will not give up any time soon, and they will continue to find ways to get through even the toughest security measures. It’s also partly because new technology is being adapted to enhance security. As long as we have hackers, cybersecurity will remain a trending technology because it will constantly evolve to defend against those hackers.

According to Gartner , by 2025, 60% of organizations will use cybersecurity risk as a primary determinant in conducting third-party transactions and business engagements. You must note that however challenging the field is it also offers lucrative six-figure incomes, and roles can range from

  • Ethical Hacker
  • Malware Analyst
  • Security Engineer
  • Chief Security Officer

offering a promising career path for someone who wants to get into and stick with this new trending technology.

Full stack development refers to the practice of developing both the front-end (user interface) and back-end (server-side) components of a web or software application. Full stack developers are proficient in multiple programming languages and technologies, allowing them to work on the entire software stack. This trend has gained momentum as businesses seek versatile developers who can build end-to-end solutions efficiently. Full stack development streamlines the development process and enables faster product development and deployment.

DevOps is a set of practices that focuses on collaboration and communication between software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) teams. It aims to automate and streamline the software development and deployment lifecycle, allowing for more frequent and reliable releases. DevOps practices include continuous integration, continuous delivery, infrastructure as code, and automated testing. Adopting DevOps leads to faster development cycles, improved software quality, and greater agility in responding to changes and customer needs.

The metaverse is a virtual, interconnected digital universe where users can interact with each other and digital environments in real-time. It combines augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and various technologies to create immersive, shared experiences. Companies are exploring metaverse applications in gaming, social networking, education, healthcare, and beyond. This trend represents a convergence of digital and physical worlds and is expected to have far-reaching impacts on communication, entertainment, and business collaboration.

Digital twins are virtual replicas of physical objects, processes, or systems. These digital representations are created using data from sensors, IoT devices, and other sources. Digital twins enable organizations to monitor, simulate, and analyze real-world assets and operations in a virtual environment. They find applications in manufacturing, urban planning, healthcare, and more. By creating digital twins, businesses can optimize processes, improve decision-making, and enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

Looking for new presentation technology? Here are 11 ways to go beyond the PowerPoint at your next event

Presentation technology has evolved. What are the latest trends among keynote speakers, and how can you wow the audience at your next event?

Glen Justice

@WSB_Speakers

The traditional slide deck has become synonymous with a presentation.  The reality is, it’s also become synonymous with dated, and even boring.   If it’s not supported by a highly-engaging talk, you may be setting yourself up for an unengaged audience.

A boom in presentation technology, fueled by the ubiquity of mobile apps, has given birth to a bevy of tools that can make almost any event more lively.

Web and mobile apps, many of them affordable, allow new capabilities — from the ability to poll your audience to animation and video that add compelling elements to your presentation screen. There is even wearable and throwable technology that can enhance your game on stage.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with PowerPoint, particularly if you’re integrating multimedia elements to make things more interesting.

But, if you want your presentation materials to stand out, here are some suggestions for how to take it to the next level.

App-Based Technology

There are many different ways to enhance your presentation. With almost everyone in your audience likely carrying a mobile phone, these apps can allow your audience to participate in new ways.

1.   Poll Everywhere

This is an app that allows audience participation. The speaker can ask a question, attendees can answer using their phones, and the results can be posted live on the screen. The service, which replicates old-school Audience Response Systems, introduces an interactive experience to any event.

2.   Glisser

This app allows you to share your presentation to mobile phones in the audience, allowing attendees to comment, like, and share your slides. It adds interactivity and eliminates the need for handouts.

Improving Your Slides

Integrating multimedia elements will help tell your story in a more compelling way. Video, animations, and other features can take a standard presentation to the next level. Here are some tools.

3.   Prezi

Prezi is a go-to alternative for those who want a visually appealing, non-linear approach to slides. Elegant transitions move seamlessly, masking the idea that attendees are looking at slides.

4.   Powtoon

Powtoon creates short, punchy animated videos that grab attention. You can use images, motion, music, and more — all with a drag-and-drop interface designed for beginners.

5.  Animoto

Animoto allows you to build short videos, with templates and a drag-and-drop interface that is friendly to non-techies. It comes with an archive of images and video, and almost all aspects of your creation are configurable. If you want to add video, Animoto is a solid option.

6.  Canva

Canva is a design, photo, and graphics program. It has a “presentation” format that allows you to create graphics to show off your data. Once ready, you can show your presentation right from Canva. Templates, stock images, and other tools allow for polished and professional slides.

7.  VideoScribe

Whiteboard videos are clean, simple, and visually compelling. VideoScribe allows you to create your own, without any technical fluency.

8.  ZohoShow

ZohoShow is a collaboration tool that allows you to import a PowerPoint deck and embed new features like animated transitions, images, video, and more. It also features publishing options that allow you to share your presentation on a blog or social channels.

9.  SlideDog

SlideDog allows users to take slides from PowerPoint, Prezi, PDFs, and other documents to create one seamless multimedia experience. It also has audience engagement features that allow for real-time polls and feedback.

Wearable and Throwable Technologies

10.   myo gesture control armband.

Presentations are more than just slides. How you deploy your presentation is also an area that can benefit from technology. For example, wearable technology like this armband can replace slide clickers, allowing you to use your own movement to transition through your slides.

11.   Catchbox

Another example is this throwable microphone that makes passing the mic a lot more fun. The small green, padded cube can be thrown about, allowing you to literally toss control of the room to your audience.

The Art of the Technical Presentation: How to Present Technical Topics to Non-Technical People

presentation about new technology

So, you need to make a technical presentation to people outside of your field. It should be easy, right? All you have to do is let the bounty of your knowledge flow forth. But what if your message gets lost in the gap between your expertise and your audience’s point of view? Find out how to conquer the divide with an artfully designed presentation.

Although great presentations are a mix of education, communication, and collaboration, in the end, they all boil down to persuasion. Luckily, you don’t need a degree in psychology to get through to your listeners. These five tips will help you build a simple presentation that gets your message across, imparts key technical details, and leaves you and your audience feeling like you got what you needed.

Focus on your purpose

What’s the nitty gritty reason why you’re doing this presentation? Whether you’re seeking funding, partnership, a job, or a sale, you’re essentially trying to persuade your audience to take action.

What do you want them to do when they’ve heard your spiel? Remember this as you plan each step of your presentation, and make sure that every element you add contributes to your purpose. If you notice your content going off on a tangent, cut that part out. Keep it tight, and you’ll keep their attention.

Find the Gap

Once you’ve got a clear purpose in mind, think about why you need to do this presentation. There must be something that your audience doesn’t know or fully appreciate yet, because otherwise they’d already be with you.

But be careful here. A lot of us fall into the trap of thinking they need to hear everything we know. If you take the time now to tease out the information that’s critical to your message, you’ll save yourself from overwhelming your listeners and losing their support.

What’s the simplest way you can explain the difference between what they’re doing now, and what will happen if they adopt your idea? An infographic can be a powerful and succinct way to make your message hit home, and Beautiful.ai’s templates can make it easy.

One trick that will help you explain technical things in simpler terms is to empathize with your audience. What do they want to get from working with you? Let’s say you’re speaking to investors. They want a return on their investment, right? So you’ll need to highlight facts, figures, and examples that show why your proposal is going to profit them in the end. Think about who you’re speaking to, and how cooperating with you will make their lives better.

Some other common needs that your project might meet are helping your audience to save time, have less stress, or enjoy better relationships. Make sure you frame your request in terms of how it will benefit your viewers.

Images can be a powerful way to help listeners picture the results that you’re promising in vivid detail. With Beautiful.ai’s image gallery, you’ll have thousands of photos, icons, and visual elements at your fingertips that you can add to your presentation for free. You can also upload your own custom images with an effortless drag and drop.

Keep it short

Another way to make a technical topic easy to digest is to keep your presentation brief. One trick is to create an outline to distill your message into 3-5 key points. Another is to use Guy Kowasaki’s 10/20/20 rule (10 slides, 20 minutes, and a minimum of 30 font) to force yourself to be concise.

Some technical presenters check their urge to splurge by only addressing “ what ” their idea will accomplish, rather than the “how”.

And of course, you can save words and pack a stronger punch by incorporating visual elements into your presentation. Beautiful.ai has templates to help you easily build a pictograph or specialized slide with a Venn diagram, flowchart, bar graph, and more to make your point in fewer words with a greater lasting impression.

Did you know that people remember things they learned with an accompanying visual over 6x longer than information they only heard verbally?

Use good design

Although you can insert good information into any presentation maker, even the most brilliant thoughts will be lost on your audience if the styling doesn’t flow. Awkward spacing, inconsistent colors and fonts, and illegible sizing are hugely distracting to your audience and can steal your thunder in a heartbeat.

Beautiful.ai uses smart slides technology to automatically adjust these elements on every slide. Whether you work with our templates for slides and presentations or customize a look that’s all your own, no matter what images or elements you add, the rules of good design will be applied. Your slides will come out balanced and beautiful and your message will be crystal clear. It’s like having a pro designer fixing each slide as you work.

No more all-night formatting battles or embarrassing, cluttered messes. Just powerful presentations that persuade your audience and make you proud.

When all is said and done, your technical presentation can get through to non-technical people if you stay focused on your purpose, bridge the gap between what they already know and what they need to learn to get on-board with your plan, empathize with their needs, and boil your message down into its most persuasive elements.

You can make an outstanding impact with even the most technical presentations if you start with an intelligent plan and use specialized design tools like Beautiful.ai. Try it today.

Undergraduate student research continues to thrive at New York Tech, with the 30 College of Engineering and Computing Sciences students showcasing their projects on May 9 as part of the Undergraduate Research and Entrepreneurship Program (UREP) providing the most recent evidence.

Presenting their projects on topics ranging from developing green roofing systems for urban agriculture and using AI in dentistry to building robots to mitigate unsolved home invasions, studying the impact of flash floods on electric vehicles in New York City, and much more, the eight teams comprising students from both New York campuses highlighted the findings of their group research or entrepreneurship projects conducted under the guidance of faculty mentors. UREP provides each team with $500 to cover the cost of supplies and materials; the projects can run for a single semester or extend to multiple semesters for teams pursuing further development.

Since the spring of 2018, more than 300 students have participated in this program established by Associate Professor Ziqian (Cecilia) Dong, Ph.D. , who welcomed faculty, staff, students, and other attendees to the seventh annual event.

Addressing the student participants, Dean Babak D. Beheshti, Ph.D. , said, “All of you have had a chance to work closely with the College of Engineering and Computing Sciences faculty in an undergraduate research project, which is a really valuable experience for you personally and professionally, and an amazing thing to put on your résumé for whatever pursuit that you have in mind after graduation.”

Teams featured undergraduate students, ranging from first through fourth year, and from programs including computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and mechanical engineering. Most teams were co-ed. Presented projects included:

2024 UREP Projects and Teams

  • Comparative Study of Hydroponic Plant-Disease Detection Systems Team members: Joseann Boneo, Best Justus, Alysar Tabet Faculty mentor: Houwei Cao, Ph.D.
  • Identifying Dental Cavities from X-Ray Images Using Cnn Team members: Sarah Allrozamo, Tanuza Abdin, Hannah Ocampo Faculty mentor: Huanying (Helen) Gu, Ph.D.
  • Thermoacoustic Refrigeration Team members: Sheikh Ahmar, Jericho Lee, Ernesto Rosas Romero Faculty mentor: James Scire, Ph.D.
  • Home Invasion Detection and Preventio Team members: Shan Caballes, Dani Gulino, D’ron Strapp, T’ron Strapp Faculty mentor: Kirti Mishra, Ph.D.
  • Level Crossing Analog to Digital Converter Representation Using Chebyshev Polynomials Team members: Pavan Kanakkassery, Emilio Santana-Ferro, Damian Sarjudas Faculty mentor: N. Sertac Artan, Ph.D.
  • AI Detection in Creative Writing Team members: Elijah Ewers, Vighanesh Gaund, Cheuk Tung Ho, Wedad Mortada, Tanat Sahta   Faculty mentor: Wenjia Li, Ph.D.
  • Interactive Visualization Tool for NYC Open Data Team members: Ali Elshehawi, Ali Khachab, Guang Wei Too, Alan Yuan Faculty mentor: Ziqian (Cecilia) Dong, Ph.D.
  • A Study on the Current Effects of Flash Floods in NYC on Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Team members: Mekan Agahanov, Angily Ally, Isha Kaur, Ishaan Singh Faculty mentor: Ziqian (Cecilia) Dong, Ph.D.

Beheshti noted that the variety and depth of the projects speak to the hard work that the teams have put in. He recognized and thanked the faculty mentors and reiterated to the students the importance of this experience gained by “handling an open-ended problem, outside of your classroom, that you owned, and you managed to take from an idea to a concept” and beyond.

Revian announces poster presentation at 2024 society for investigative dermatology annual meeting.

Late breaking poster presentation highlights Revian's patented combination of wavelengths has been shown to reduce Dihydrotestosterone production by 74%

MORRISVILLE, N.C. , May 14, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- REVIAN Inc., an aesthetic medical technology company using precise wavelengths of LED light to rejuvenate hair and skin, announced an upcoming presentation at the 2024 Society for Investigative Dermatology Annual Meeting being held in Dallas on May 15-18, 2024 . Dr. Jacob Kocher will deliver a poster presentation of data illustrating that Revian's patented combination of wavelengths reduces Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) production by 74%, a 95% improvement over industry standard finasteride, which reduced DHT production by 38%, at 24 hours post treatment, in the same in vitro experiment. DHT plays an important causative role in pattern hair loss  (androgenic alopecia or pattern baldness).

Presentation Details:

Poster Title:  Inhibition of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) formation via dual wavelength orange-red light production of nitric oxide Category:  Translational Studies and Early Preclinical to Clinical Session:  Poster only Session Date and Time:  May 17 th , 4:00-6:00 PM Location:  Trinity Exhibit Hall, Hilton Anatole, Dallas

"These tests prove Revian's proprietary combination of 620 nm and 660 nm wavelengths block DHT production at a greater rate than the industry standard Finasteride. This is a major breakthrough for hair loss research." stated John Oakley, Chief Executive Officer of Revian. "Having an alternative to a systemic drug with serious side effects is a massive improvement to the available treatment options for anyone seeking a more healthy solution to stopping hair loss."

More information on the 2024 Society for Investigative Dermatology Annual Meeting can be found  here .

About the Revian Red Hair Growth System The REVIAN RED System is an FDA cleared, lightweight wireless cap controlled by a mobile App that functions to provide a hair loss treatment for men and women using precision LED light. The device's patented dual wavelength LED technology provides broader scalp coverage and better skin penetration, producing the best clinical trial performance of any hair rejuvenation treatment available on the market. REVIAN RED uses a patented combination of two wavelengths of light to stimulate the production and release of nitric oxide, which is proven to increase local blood flow, reduce inflammation, and inhibit DHT production. This provides the right environment for new hair growth. REVIAN RED's cleared indication for use is the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, to promote hair growth in males who have Norwood - Hamilton classifications of IIa-V patterns of hair loss and to treat androgenetic alopecia and to promote hair growth in females who have Ludwig-Savin Scale I-1 to II-4, II1, II2 or frontal patterns of hair loss; both with Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-IV.

About Revian, Inc. The Maui News

KIHEI, Maui, Hawaii–24 local entrepreneurs and small business owners attended the May 9 Maui TechOhana and were wowed by the inspiring work and technology of the Maui Food Innovation Center (MFIC). Ian Stewart, Entrepreneurship & Business Development Specialist, Pā’oihana Program, and Douglas Paul, Chef Instructor gave an engaging presentation of the Center’s work including a video tour of the facility and samples of their success stories.

Maui TechOhana meetings are organized by the Maui Economic Development Board, Inc., and supported by the County of Maui. They provide an informal networking opportunity open to anyone interested in Maui County’s technology industry with guest speakers presenting on a relevant topic in business or technology.

The MFIC is Hawai’i’s first in-state business incubator which serves to foster and accelerate the growth and education of agribusinesses and food entrepreneurs. Some of the products featured during the presentation were tortillas made from taro, a chocolate-like confectionary made from ube and coconut crème; ulu hummus; cocktail kits; and more.

Ian Stewart’s current role sees him focused on supporting entrepreneurship as part of a U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency grant, the aim of which is to cultivate a vibrant diversified economy and increase minority business enterprises through entrepreneurship training and coaching.

Attendees participate in an interactive exercise at Maui TechOhana on May 9

When he’s not working at UHMC you’ll find Ian championing local food systems and fresh produce either at Napili Farmers Market, which he helps to organize, or volunteering his time to help maintain a 26-acre tropical fruit farm in Kula.

With a resume that includes Roy’s Restaurant, Spago Restaurant in both Las Vegas, and Maui, as well as his own food trailer called “My Office,” Douglas Paul demonstrates a commitment to honing his craft in various culinary settings. He says, “My passion for exploring and trying new food items from around the world aligns well with my current role in the Maui Food Innovation Center. This move indicates a strategic step toward entrepreneurship, suggesting that I aim to not only create but innovate within the culinary industry.”

Candance Shaw of Astute Consulting who has attended several MEDB workshops commented on the presentation, “It was an excellent program and really gave everybody the opportunity to see that innovation doesn’t just exist inside of technology or medical spaces. It is definitely all around in everything including agriculture and food production.”

“I had a great time,” said Justin Dietrich, Essential Builders on the experience. “I’m really encouraged to see all the innovation here in Hawaii and in Maui.”

The Maui Food Innovation Center offers a number of programs to support entrepreneurs with manufacturing their food concepts, including how to launch a successful food business; an incubator program to teach food industry best practices for taking a recipe idea from concept to consumer; and applied studies in Fundamental Food Manufacturing. The facility is also available for kitchen usage for established value-added food entrepreneurs ready to scale up their production.

TV Upfront Presentations Clouded by Digital Video Ad Supremacy

Reuters

By Dawn Chmielewski and Sheila Dang

(Reuters) - As television executives prepare lavish stage presentations in New York this week to dazzle advertisers during the annual TV upfront sales season, a harsh economic reality looms offstage -- digital video advertising now eclipses spending on traditional television ads.

The shift in spending and competition from tech players like Amazon has taken a toll on media companies' financial results, raising the stakes for the annual showcase of TV content to attract spending commitments from advertisers.

“We’ve definitely seen that audience erosion in linear TV in certain pockets -- especially more so in entertainment,” said Nicole McCurnin, director of advertising insights at ad tracking firm Guideline. “But I do see, broad strokes, ad companies’ attention is just going more so towards those digital platforms.”

Digital video refers to a broad category of TV alternatives that includes paid streaming services like Netflix, social video platforms such as TikTok, free ad-supported TV offerings like Pluto TV and cable replacement services including YouTube TV. It will account for an estimated $62.9 billion in U.S. ad spending in 2024, according to an April report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau and Guideline.

That represents 52% of the projected spending on video advertising this year, reflecting a change in viewing habits nearly two decades in the making.

Walt Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, Fox and Comcast's NBCUniversal all reported declines in domestic television ad revenue in the most recent quarter, though NBCU's exclusive streaming of an NFL Wild Card game on its Peacock service helped fuel revenue, offsetting those declines.

Many of the streaming services launched to capitalize on changing consumer viewing behavior "are still bleeding cash while declines in the traditional television business accelerate," said Richard Greenfield, media analyst at LightShed Partners. "They simply pivoted too late."

The fragmenting of the video landscape is well understood -- and media companies like NBCUniversal have developed new advertising tools that let marketers' messages ride along with their content, wherever it appears. For example, a T-Mobile ad featuring U.S. TV show "Saturday Night Live's" Chloe Fineman could air during the live network TV broadcast of “SNL,” appear the next day on NBCU’s Peacock streaming service and show up on social platforms like X, TikTok and YouTube.

“Regardless of where that person is who's in your target …  you can go follow them, wherever they are,” NBCUniversal global advertising chairman Mark Marshall told Reuters. “The technology and capability just wasn't available until this year.”

Ahead of the upfront advertiser presentations, Disney and Warner Bros Discovery announced they would combine their Disney+, Hulu and Max streaming services this summer in a bundle of programming reminiscent of cable television. Such a combination might reduce subscriber cancellations and perhaps coax money-losing competitors to follow suit, analysts said.

“We view a re-bundling of traditional media content on streaming platforms as a key to making the space investable again,” wrote TD Cowen’s Doug Creutz.

Meanwhile, digital rivals Amazon and Netflix are hosting their own advertiser presentations in New York -- the Seattle retail giant, for the first time -- to capture shifting ad dollars.

Amazon launched ads within Prime Video for all customers in January, requiring users to pay for a higher-priced tier to remove ads. The move will boost Amazon's revenue and likely come at the expense of traditional TV companies' revenue, said Brian Wieser, a longtime ad industry analyst, in a March report.

Media companies are also tying up with tech giants to sell more ads. During a presentation to advertisers last month, Google announced that brands would be able to buy ad space with media companies like Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery through Google's automated tech tools, rather than working with salespeople.

"I think we're going to hear more about programmatic ... particularly as consumption shifts to the digital and streaming ecosystem,” said Samantha Rose, strategic investment lead at Horizon Media, referring to the upfront presentations.
