A family tree is a hierarchical chart that details the connection between members of a family . You can create your own family tree in PowerPoint by using one of Microsoft's many hierarchy style SmartArt graphics. Here's how.

To get started, open PowerPoint and navigate to the "Insert" tab.

Insert tab in PowerPoint

In the "Illustrations" group, click "SmartArt."

SmartArt option in Illustrations group

The "Choose a SmartArt Graphic" window will appear. In the left-hand pane, click the "Hierarchy" tab.

Hierarchy tab

You'll now see a small collection of hierarchy SmartArt graphics. For standard family trees, the " Organizational Chart " option is ideal. However, you can choose whichever SmartArt graphic works best for you.

Select the chart you would like to use by clicking it.

Standard heirarchical chart

Once selected, a preview and a description of the chart will appear in the right-hand pane. Click "OK" to insert the chart.

Insert button for chart

With the chart added to your presentation, you can start entering the names of the family members in each respective box. Do this by clicking the box and typing their name. The text will resize itself to fit the boxes automatically.

You can delete boxes you don't need by clicking the box to select it and then pressing the "Delete" key on your keyboard.

You can also add additional boxes below or above certain positions. To do this, highlight the box by clicking it.

Select box within box

Next, click the "Design" tab in the "SmartArt Tools" group.

Design tab

In the "Create Graphic" group, click the arrow next to the "Add Shape" option.

dropdown arrow next to add shape option

A drop-down menu will appear. The option you select from the menu will depend on where you want to place the box with respect to the currently selected box. Here's what each option does:

  • Add Shape After: Adds a box to the right, and on the same level, of the selected box.
  • Add Shape Before: Adds a box to the left, and on the same level, of the selected box.
  • Add Shape Above: Adds a box above the selected box.
  • Add Shape Below: Adds a box below the selected box.
  • Add Assistant: Adds a box between the level of the selected box and the level below.

In this example, assuming our fictional character Bryon had a child, we'd use the "Add Shape Below" option.

Add Shape Below option

A box will now appear below our selected box.

Added box below selected box

Once the box is placed, enter the name of the respective family member. Repeat these steps until your family tree is complete.

You can also tweak the design or change the color of the chart. Click the chart to select it and then click the "Design" tab. In the "SmartArt Styles" group, you'll see a range of different styles to choose from, as well as the option to change colors.

Click the "Change Colors" option to show a drop-down menu, then select the color scheme you like best.

Gradient range accent 2

Next, choose a style you like from the lineup in the "SmartArt Styles" group. We'll use the "Inset" option.

Inset option

Your chart will take on the selected color and style.

Family tree example

Play around with the styles and colors until you find one the works best for you.

Creating a family tree is an exciting thing, but it's always a collaborative effort. You can ask family members to collaborate on the presentation with you to ensure that no family members are left out. And remember to share the presentation with your family once the family tree is complete!

Family tree refers to the visual representation of family relationships and connections. The tree includes family members' names, birth dates, marriage dates, or pictures in a diagram format. This term was derived from genealogical terms, which means the study of family histories. Genealogical researchers, developmentalists, and organizations often require family trees.

Practical Application of Family Tree Diagram

The tree diagram is drawn in a hierarchical structure, which means data is organized into levels. In the family tree, older generations are placed at the top, whereas the current generations are at the bottom. Often, family trees show people sharing the same surnames and make data easier to interpret. Since family trees serve different purposes, a few are mentioned below:

1. Genealogy Research

Students and researchers with a genealogical topic use family tree templates as tools. These templates allow them to keep records of family heritage and collateral relatives. Also, users can keep track of ancestors and descendants to analyze the information later.

Family trees assist researchers in mapping out the current locations of extended families. They also preserve valuable family stories, traditions, and legacy. Moreover, family trees encounter research gaps and help in overcoming research obstacles.

2. Family History Books

Descendants of famous historical figures can be identified through family tree diagrams. In history books, family trees are drawn to show the achievements and experiences of ancestors. Digital family trees provide lasting research material for future generations. Preserving family stories this way enables one to imagine time's cultural and historical boundaries.

This way, individuals get artistic expressions for paintings, books, and movies. Furthermore, family history books visualize medical histories that aid in healthcare decision-making. For instance, if someone gets to know a cancer family lineage, they may take precautions.

3. School Projects

The educational curriculum contains projects as a creative tool for teaching various subjects. In history subjects, most teachers advised to make a family tree and paste pictures into the project. Whereas in psychology projects, family genograms explore family dynamics and roles.

Students make family trees for literature studies to understand the novel's characters. Additionally, family diagrams assist in biology projects to illustrate traits and genetic conditions. Thus, family trees offer multi-disciplinary usage for arts, math, and social studies backgrounds.

4. Professional Presentations

Medical healthcare professional needs family trees to display genetic disorders through case studies. In this way, genetic predispositions are determined, and treatment plans develop. How to Make a Family Tree in PowerPoint, Step by Step

You may be wondering: how do you make a family tree on PowerPoint? If that's your question, keep reading for a step-by-step tutorial to guide you through the process.

For this tutorial, I’m going to use the Bamboo PowerPoint template , because I was born in a tropical country.

family tree template powerpoint

Bamboo is one of the PowerPoint templates available from Envato Elements. It comes with five color variations and 30 unique slide layouts, for a grand total of 150 slide templates. It also includes hand-drawn infographics, which are resizable and editable.

You can use any template you wish for your family tree—even a template that isn’t specifically designed for creating family trees. If you follow the steps I show below, you’ll be able to create your very own family tree.

Let's get started:

Prepare the Template

The first step is to prepare the template by downloading and copying it and deleting the slides you don't need.

1. Download the Template

The first step is to download the template of your choice and save it on your computer. From the template page on Elements, click Download . Follow the rest of the instructions to save the template files to your computer.

family tree powerpoint - download template

It’s a good idea to duplicate the template, and work on the copy. That way, you’ll always have the original template files if you want to revert to them later for any reason.

2. Select Your Slide Layout

Switch to Slide Sorter view to see the slides at a glance.

Delete the slides you won’t be using. Feel free to also delete any other slide elements you don’t need, such as extraneous text boxes and images.

This is what the original slide template looks like:

And here it is after I’ve deleted the items I won’t be needing:

how do you make a family tree on powerpoint - slide

Now that we've got a prepared “canvas,” we can create the family tree itself.

Method One: SmartArt

The first method I’m going to show you uses PowerPoint SmartArt .

1. Launch SmartArt

Go to Insert > SmartArt > Hierarchy .

family tree template powerpoint - smartart hierarchy

By default, an Organization Chart is inserted on the slide. We can work on this chart to begin with and then switch to a different style later on.

2. Delete All but One of the SmartArt Shapes

I find it easiest to delete all but the top shape of the SmartArt. To do this, select a shape, then click the Delete button.

how to make a family tree in powerpoint - smartart shape

The shape that’s left is our starting point. In this case, it’s the shape that stands for me.

3. Add Shapes and Text to Build Out Your Family Tree

To add text, double-check inside the shape and type a name.

how to do family tree in powerpoint - smartart text

Now, let’s add two shapes below the first one, one for each parent. To add a shape, right-click on the first shape, then click Add Shape > Add Shape Below .

how to create a family tree in powerpoint - smartart add shape

Type the names of a person inside each shape. If you can’t double-click inside a shape, you’ll have to click on the arrow to expand the SmartArt Text tab. Type the desired text there, and it'll appear inside the chart.

how do you make a family tree on powerpoint - smartart text tab

You can also use the arrows in the SmartArt Text tab to delete, add, and move shapes in the chart.

Keep going until you've got all the shapes you need. Add the names to each shape.

4. Modify the Colors, Fonts, and Slide Objects

When you've got all the shapes and text you need, go ahead and change the colors and fonts of the family tree. Select the shape you wish to modify, then click on the Home tab. From the ribbon, change the font and shape fill color.

family tree powerpoint - smartart change fonts and colors

At this point, we can also edit the other items on the slide, such as the title and the slide graphic background.

Here’s my family tree, all done!

how to make a family tree in powerpoint - smartart

By the way, when your family tree is all built out, you can change the SmartArt style. It'll retain all the content you’ve already added.

how to do family tree in powerpoint - change smartart style

For example, I may want to switch to a style with images, like this:

how to create a family tree in powerpoint - smartart with pictures

You can learn more about using SmartArt here .

If you want to have more granular control over how your family tree looks, there’s another method you can use.

Method Two. Shapes and Lines

Another way to make a family tree slide in PowerPoint is by inserting shapes, text, and lines. This is a little bit more work than SmartArt, but it also gives you more control over every single element of the family tree.

Follow the same steps earlier for downloading and duplicating your PowerPoint template. And then, create your family tree by adding shapes, text, and lines.

1. Add a Shape and Text

From the Home tab, click on the Shapes button, then select a shape you wish to use.

Double-click in the shape to type the name. Use the font setting buttons to format the text.

2. Build Out the Family Tree

Copy and paste the first shape to build the rest of the elements of the family tree. You may wish to use PowerPoint’s built-in guides. Go to View > Guides > Guides. You may also choose View > Guides > Snap to Grid .

Use the Shape Format tab to change the color and border of the shapes.

3. Link Shapes With Lines

When the shapes and text are complete, it’s time to link them with lines. Click on the Shapes button, then choose the line style you wish to use. For this example, I used the Elbow Connector line type.

Repeat for the rest of the family tree. Here's my family tree all done by using shapes, text, and lines in a PowerPoint template:

Top Tips for Making a Family Tree

Making a family tree is a rewarding activity. But it’s also a lot of work. Just doing the research alone is bound to take a lot of time and energy. And so, we all want our family trees to not only look attractive, but to be meaningful as well. These three tips may help:

1. Pick a Meaningful Theme

family tree template powerpoint - retro

When it comes to picking a PowerPoint template, the options are almost endless. It’s easy to get overwhelmed. It would help to narrow your choices by picking a theme that holds a special meaning for you and your family.

For example, in this tutorial, I chose the Bamboo template. That’s because my family originates from Asia, and bamboo was ever-present in my environment during my childhood.

2. Use Family Photos

Nothing brings a family tree to life better than photographs of the person on the tree. If you choose to go this route, you’ll have your work cut out for you. And making the family tree presentation on PowerPoint will be the easiest part! But if you can pull this off, the end result will be well worth the effort.

Decision Tree Diagram with Text Boxes for PowerPoint

A family tree is a visual representation of a person’s lineage that traces relationships to common ancestors. Like an org chart, this diagram is usually presented in a tree structure, with one individual as the root. Lines representing branches terminate in boxes representing leaves from the root. Each leaf represents a different family member, with information such as birth, marriage, and death dates.

Our downloadable and easy-to-customize Family Tree Template or genealogy chart makes it simple to record and share the people, places, and events that make up your family history.

Our Family Tree Template can also create decision-making, problem-solving, or root-cause analysis presentations. As a result, you can use it to describe the process required in your organization to make visible decisions about the hierarchy.

You must enter your family members’ names, birthdates, and relationships into the template. It will generate a family tree you can customize and modify as needed. Using this template, you can keep track of important family details, such as birth and marriage dates, and document your family’s legacy for future generations.

Whether you are a genealogy enthusiast or simply interested in your family history, our Family Tree Template is a must-have tool for researching your ancestors and learning more about your ancestors.

Donald Trump's Nephew Speaks On Family History Of Dementia And Notes 'Warning Signs'

Josephine Harvey

Assignment Editor, HuffPost

powerpoint presentation on family history

Donald Trump ’s nephew discussed the family’s history of dementia and possible signs of the condition in his uncle during an interview last week.

Fred Trump III, the son of Donald Trump ’s late brother, Fred Trump Jr., wrote in his book about his grandfather’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Fred Trump Sr. died at 93 years old in 1999, eight years after he was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease.

During an appearance on SiriusXM’s “The Dean Obeidallah Show,” Fred Trump III was asked if he sees anything in Donald Trump that reminds him of his grandfather during those years.

He suggested he could see some indicators based on his experiences, but noted he’s no medical expert.

“You know, Donald said, ‘Oh, my father was tiptop until the end.’ I can assure you, that was not the case,” he said.

“I know what I saw in my grandfather,” he added. “I know what I saw in Donald’s older sister, my aunt Maryanne, who in the end ... I am not a doctor, I don’t pretend to be. I just, I know the warning signs from both of my grandfathers.”

Donald Trump’s sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, died at 86 in November last year.

“Donald’s cousin, John Walters, had dementia. It runs in the family,” Fred Trump III went on, adding of his uncle: “He looks older. And I get it ... anybody who is in that office looks different than when they come out. But the things he’s spewing and the craziness, and he just can’t stick to a message. And he used to be able to stick to a message.”

He noted the Republican nominee’s failure to stay on topic at a speech in North Carolina last week that his campaign said would focus on the economy.

“He had one goal. Talk about the economy,” he said.

The Trump campaign did not immediately return a request for comment.

Fred Trump III last month became the second member of the family to publish a damaging tell-all about the former president when he released his memoir, “All in the Family: The Trumps and How We Got This Way.” His sister, Mary Trump , has written several books on the subject.

Both Fred Trump III and Mary Trump are supporting Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 race.

Donald Trump spent much of the campaign against President Joe Biden fixated on what he claimed was a “cognitive decline” in his opponent. Polls showed significant portions of voters were concerned about both men’s mental acuity.

Trump’s been struggling to recalibrate since Biden stepped aside and Harris, a much younger and more energetic candidate, joined the race to a wave of momentum.

The Washington Post earlier this year analyzed Trump’s preoccupation with mental fitness and how that may have been shaped by his father’s experience.

Experts don’t exactly know how people develop Alzheimer’s, but genetics have been found to play a role. Individuals with a parent or sibling who had the condition are more likely to develop the condition, and the risk increases for those who have more than one first-degree relative with the condition, according to the Alzheimer’s Association .

powerpoint presentation on family history

I thought my parents moved to Holly for the schools. I was wrong.

You’d think my parents would have told me we fled integration.

Instead, they said: We moved because of the schools.

My family runs four generations deep here in southeastern Michigan: Pontiac and Waterford, Ann Arbor and Detroit, Rose Township and White Lake. My great-grandparents were Ozark migrants and small-town laborers — or their wives — all of them flocking to industrial towns from Pontiac to Sault Sainte Marie. As I remember it, if my family ever talked about racism, it was to lament my grandparents’ continuing use of the N-word, and to congratulate ourselves on doing better.

My parents made their own migration in 1981, when I was 4, trading a bungalow on a stretch of Rensselaer Street in Oak Park zoned into Ferndale schools for a Rose Township colonial zoned into Holly schools. My father tells me he doesn't remember thinking about the schools back then, as he moved his three pre-school children. He says he doesn't remember telling me, when I was a teenager that we moved because of the schools, that if we had stayed in Oak Park, he would have had to pay for private school. He never told me what that meant.

It took four decades before I questioned what my father told me. It took a book contract for me to learn the truth for myself. It took this year's presidential election, as I watched white resentment morph into popular support for a racist presidential candidate for the second time in eight years , for me to understand how dangerous it has been to leave it all unsaid.

What they didn't tell me

Starting in 1968, the School District of the City of Ferndale began to receive letters from the Office for Civil Rights at the federal Department of Health, Education, and Welfare flagging concerns about segregation. The segregation in Ferndale was not de jure — written into law by government — the way it was in the American South. Instead, segregation of Ferndale’s schools and resources was considered de facto : enabled by private practices that government had, at the time, declined to correct.

These practices showed up clearly at Ferndale’s Ulysses S. Grant Elementary . Although the district was only 9% Black, in 1968, every one of the 365 students at Grant was Black. The other 31 Black elementary students in Ferndale Schools that year attended school among the district's 3,866 white elementary students. The quality of education at Grant was so clearly inferior to that offered at the district’s nine overwhelmingly white elementaries that Black parents petitioned the district to give Grant students “ the same kind of educational material ” offered in those school buildings.

That was six years before my parents moved to the district, and seven before I was born.

Maybe that’s why my parents never told me how, in 1969, the Ferndale School Board’s attorney, Burton R. Shifman, did not object to the facts federal officials used in their first complaint about the segregation of Ferndale’s schools. He did not object to the poor education that Black students received. He objected, instead, to using the word “segregated” to describe an all-Black school in a majority-white district. “Ferndale has never ... segregated its pupils by race,” he wrote .

The schools, Shifman wrote, had not caused the problem; it was “solely the result of residential housing segregation.” Why would the schools have to fix a problem they had not caused?

Nobody taught me that, from 1968 to 1973, Ferndale fought its first battle to preserve segregation in its schools . Or how, in 1970, it lost in agency rulings. Or how it lost on appeal to the agency, and then on appeal to the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare. Or how it appealed those rulings again, to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals — and lost again, in 1973. Or how, later that year, the district made a fourth appeal, to the U.S. Supreme Court, which refused to even hear their case. Or how, after this final defeat, the district opted to forgo federal money rather than integrate Grant.

In 1973, Ferndale became the first northern district to lose funding for refusing to integrate its schools. District documents suggest the schools sacrificed much of their vocational education as a result.

Fighting integration

In 1974, Ferndale officials added “open enrollment” to the district's schools . This allowed all families to send their children to any of the district's elementaries. No white families accepted the invite to send their children to Grant’s regular program, and its student body stayed entirely Black. A judge compared the district's policy one Southern schools used to preserve segregation: “freedom of choice."

In 1975, as my parents moved to Oak Park, Ferndale launched its first attempt to integrate Grant: a magnet program there that enrolled 200 students — 31 Black, 169 white. Magnet students met on a separate floor and ate lunch at school, while Grant’s 230 other "traditional" students, all Black, went home for lunch. This kept the magnet students entirely segregated from students whose school they had joined.

The U.S. Department of Justice objected to this “solution” to integration and sued the district under a new law , the Equal Educational Opportunities Act of 1974. Or that, when this case went to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Judge Cornelia Kennedy, a Nixon appointee, rejected the case on the grounds that the federal agency had not named a student as part of its case.

Nobody explained that in April 1976, the DOJ added a district child to its case . Or that the government’s attorney, Thomas Keeling, noted that no solution would be acceptable unless it “in fact desegregate(s) the Grant school.” The magnet program, he said, “clearly does not do that.”

I was born six months later.

Progress, at last

In 1978, the year my younger sisters were born, the Sixth Circuit overturned Kennedy’s 1975 decision , saying it found “no logic at all” in her ruling.

In the summer of 1980, Ferndale schools offered, finally, three earnest proposals for integrating its elementary schools. The first two plans bused Black children to white elementary schools, while white children stayed at schools within walking distance of their homes. The Eastern District — where Judge Horace Gilmore sat in place of Kennedy — rejected these first two plans.

“The Constitution will not tolerate a desegregation plan that places a five-to-one burden on black students as compared to white students,” wrote Gilmore in the Detroit Free Press.

Nobody told me that as I turned 4 that fall, the judge approved Ferndale’s third proposal, which spread busing across the district. The district agreed to stop running multiple elementary schools that taught all grades but, in the process, segregated the district’s students — and thus its spending on them — by race. Instead, it planned to assign classes to buildings by grade.

Not without cost

In January 1981, 12 years after the original complaint was filed, Ferndale integrated its elementary schools. Black students who'd been in kindergarten when the suit began were now seniors in high school.

Journalists estimated that the district had given up $2 million in funding in its bid to prolong segregation.

On June 12, 1981, the Detroit Free Press declared : “Busing Gets an A: Integration Is a Success in Ferndale.” If my parents had chosen to stay in their home, I would have started kindergarten in an integrated school.

The next day, my family moved to Rose Township. Because of the schools.

I didn't know that we were joining a surge of new residents that more than doubled the area's population from 1960 to 1980. Census records show that nearly all these new families were white, with the townships included in the district averaging 98.0% white in 1980. We came to Holly even though the local paper reported it was too poor to afford full-length school days , and the high school was in danger of losing accreditation.

I wonder which places and schools my classmates' families had fled.

I wonder what their parents told them then — and what they tell them now.

I wonder if my classmates admire, as I do, Ferndale Schools' addition of a historical marker acknowledging its history of segregation. I wonder if they sense, as I do, that being honest about this history is necessary, if not sufficient. I wonder if they see how easily our democracy could crumble under the weight of all the racist things white Americans have done — and still do — and so rarely admit to aloud.

I wonder if they wish, like me, that our parents had told us the truth.

'We Were Illegal' examines Texas history through multiple generations of one family

Viking

After she worked on a book about refugee resettlement in the U.S., writer Jessica Goudeau says she realized she knew very little about how her own family arrived in Texas. Her new book, We Were Illegal , looks at multiple generations of her family and how their lives reflected a history of racism, slavery and violence in her home state. In today's episode, Goudeau speaks with Here & Now's Deepa Fernandes about how family secrets and the language we use to talk about our lineage contributes to the mythmaking of America, and why she wanted to put those difficult conversations out in the open.

Woman charged with attempting to defraud Elvis' family in Graceland theft scheme

Lisa jeanine findley allegedly claimed the late lisa marie presley owed a bogus company millions in loans, by gabriella ferrigine.

The Justice Department on Friday said that a Missouri woman has been arrested for plotting to defraud the family of Elvis Presley by attempting to auction off the late singer's Graceland mansion in Memphis.

Lisa Jeanine Findley stands accused of fraudulently claiming that Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, borrowed $3.8 million from fabricated investor Naussany Investments, failed to pay back the loan and promised the estate as collateral. The attempt led Elvis' granddaughter, Riley Keough, to sue in an effort to halt the sale. Keough, the trustee of the Presley estate, refuted the bogus company's claim and stated in court that it seemed to be a non-existent entity, with no phone number or address on record.

The Associated Press reported that Findley posed under three different aliases involved with Naussany in an attempt to carry out the scheme. She also fabricated loan documents and even published a fake foreclosure notice in a Memphis newspaper claiming that Graceland would be sold to the highest bidder.

“Ms. Findley allegedly took advantage of the very public and tragic occurrences in the Presley family as an opportunity to prey on the name and financial status of the heirs to the Graceland estate, attempting to steal what rightfully belongs to the Presley family for her personal gain,” said Eric Shen, inspector in charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service Criminal Investigations Group.

As noted by the AP, Friday also marks the 47th anniversary of Elvis' death in 1977 at the age of 42.

‘Jamaica to the world’

A small town on a small island celebrates kamala harris’ meteoric rise.

By Fredreka Schouten, Zoë Todd, Curt Merrill and Byron Manley, CNN

Published August 17, 2024

BROWN’S TOWN, Jamaica — Three and a half years ago, Sherman Harris gathered together a clutch of family and friends at his home on a hilltop here in rural Jamaica to watch his cousin step into history.

As Kamala Harris took the oath of office as vice president of the United States, the room erupted in screams and tears, he recalled.

“Even talking to you now, I feel some sort of tears from my eyes too, you know,” Sherman Harris, 59, said in an interview with CNN. “It's like tears of joy.”

powerpoint presentation on family history

Next week, they will gather again before his widescreen television to watch Harris make history once more, when she formally accepts the Democratic presidential nomination — becoming the first Black woman, the first Jamaican American and the first Asian American to become a major party’s White House standard-bearer.

Although the milestone will be celebrated by her relatives in this town of some 12,000 people on the island’s northern coast, Harris’ Caribbean roots still are coming into focus for the millions of Americans getting acquainted with her after she was suddenly thrust to the top of the Democratic ticket a month ago when President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid and endorsed his vice president.

Already, her Republican rival, Donald Trump, has sought to question her Black identity as the two vie for support among African American voters in states such as Michigan and Georgia who could determine the outcome of this fall’s race. At a gathering of Black journalists last month, Trump falsely claimed that Harris had only recently opted to identify as Black out of political opportunism.

“I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?” Trump asked in widely derided comments.

Harris is both. She’s the daughter of an Indian-born mother, Shyamala Gopalan, a breast cancer researcher who died in 2009, and a Jamaican-born father, Donald Harris, an 85-year-old retired Stanford University economist, who has largely remained in the background of his daughter’s public life.

He hails from a family that stretches back for generations in Brown’s Town, a market town in St. Ann Parish, where vendors clustered along the main drag on a recent Sunday morning to sell glossy green avocados, yams and bundles of fragrant thyme.

It's a place Kamala Harris knows from childhood visits and readily claims.

“Half of my family is from St. Ann Parish in Jamaica,” she told the country’s prime minister, Andrew Holness, during a 2022 visit to the White House. “I know I share that history with millions of Americans.”

And it’s a town that proudly claims her.

“You have to recognize individuals who come from humble abodes and really excel,” said Michael Belnavis, the mayor of St. Ann Parish who is mulling ways to honor Harris should she prevail in November. “Coming from Brown’s Town is as humble as it gets.”

Deep roots and a powerful matriarch

The town was named after Hamilton Brown, a slave owner who came to the island from Ireland and, according to family lore, is believed to have been an ancestor of Kamala Harris’ great-grandmother, Christiana Brown, also a descendant of enslaved Jamaicans.

“Miss Chrishy,” as Christiana Brown was known, helped raise her grandson, Donald Harris, who described her in an essay first published in 2018 in the Jamaica Global Online as “reserved and stern in look, firm with ‘the strap’ but capable of the most endearing and genuine acts of love, affection, and care.”

Harris has said his interest in economics and politics was sparked, in part, by observing Miss Chrishy as she went about her daily routine of operating her dry goods store in Brown’s Town.

Although she died in 1951, Miss Chrishy looms large to this day among her descendants, who still talk of her elegant dresses, proper manners and the high standards she set for her children and grandchildren.

“She was the backbone,” said Latoya Harris-Ghartey, Sherman Harris’ 43-year-old daughter. Harris-Ghartey is executive director of Jamaica’s National Education Trust, a government-aligned organization focused on developing the island’s education infrastructure.

Her great-grandmother “believed in getting your books and having a solid education, those sorts of things,” Harris-Ghartey said. “I think that has passed on throughout the line. Everybody always pushes you to be better, to excel.”

Miss Chrishy had several children with Joseph Harris, who raised cattle and grew pimento berries — allspice in its dried form — on a farm perched high above Brown’s Town. He died in 1939, a year after Donald Harris was born, and is buried on the grounds of St. Mark’s Anglican Church — a sanctuary founded by Hamilton Brown and where Harrises have long worshipped.

Brown’s Town might be a small place, but the family has occupied a prominent position there as landowners and businesspeople.

Today, Sherman Harris — Donald Harris’ first cousin — still lives on and works the Harris land, in an area known as Orange Hill for a citrus grove that once stood there, he said. One of its dominant features is the Harris Quarry, started by Sherman Harris’ late father, Newton. Sherman runs it now, and it still produces crushed limestone and bricks.

It’s one of his ventures. On a tour with CNN journalists, he proudly pointed out the three-story commercial building he owns in the heart of Brown’s Town.

powerpoint presentation on family history

It’s to this landscape that Donald Harris would bring Kamala and her younger sister, Maya, on holidays, according to his 2018 essay — taking them through the town’s bustling marketplace, touring his primary school and other landmarks he found meaningful. He recounted the trio trekking through the cow pastures and overgrown paths on Orange Hill during one memorable visit in 1970, as they retraced his boyhood ramblings over the family property.

“Upon reaching the top of a little hill that opened much of that terrain to our full view, Kamala, ever the adventurous and assertive one, suddenly broke from the pack, leaving behind Maya the more cautious one, and took off like a gazelle in Serengeti, leaping over rocks and shrubs and fallen branches, in utter joy and unleashed curiosity, to explore that same enticing terrain,” he wrote. “I couldn’t help thinking there and then: What a moment of exciting rediscovery being handed over from one generation to another!”

Sherman Harris remembers all the cousins playing together during those jaunts to Jamaica in the 1970s, while the adults feasted and socialized. He and Kamala are the same age, born just days apart in October 1964.

What stands out most from those memories, he said, is how smart the girls were – just like their dad, who rose from a rural boyhood to earn a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley and become the first Black economics professor granted tenure at Stanford .

“Brilliant girls,” Sherman Harris said of Kamala and Maya. Even as young children, they would quiz him on the island’s current affairs, and “I wasn’t able to answer them,” he recalled. “I had to ask Daddy.”

Sherman Harris views his cousin’s ascension as yet another example of “Jamaica to the world,” a reference to the island’s culture, reggae music and food catching fire across the globe. It’s also a sign to him of the Harris drive.

“We have never ventured in much failure, you know,” he said of the Harris clan, adding that the family members are “always successful in whatever we do.”

Out of the spotlight

Even as his daughter climbs to new heights, Donald Harris has remained largely out of the spotlight.

He and Shyamala Gopalan, who met in the 1960s as graduate students at Berkeley, fell in love fighting for civil rights, Kamala Harris wrote of her parents in her 2019 memoir, “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey.” But by the time she was 5, “they had stopped being kind to one another” and soon separated.

powerpoint presentation on family history

They divorced a few years later, and Gopalan became the parent who had the greatest influence in shaping her daughters’ lives, raising them, Kamala Harris wrote, to be “confident, proud black women” in a country that would see them, first and foremost, as African American. Kamala Harris would go on to attend one of the country’s most storied Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Howard University in Washington, DC, and pledge as an Alpha Kappa Alpha while there, joining the nation’s oldest Black sorority.

In her book, Harris “goes on for page after page about her mom,” said veteran California political reporter Dan Morain, who wrote a 2021 biography, “Kamala’s Way: An American Life,” that charted the Democrat’s rise through Golden State and national politics. “She’s really important in her life, and I believe her mother is still with her on a daily basis,” years after her death, he said.

“But she passes over her father,” Morain said.

Harris wrote that her father “remained a part of our lives” after the divorce, spending time with them on weekends and in the summer.

powerpoint presentation on family history

The senior Harris complained that his relationship with his daughters was subject to “arbitrary limits” after a contentious custody fight. The state of California, he wrote bitterly in the essay, operated on the “false assumption … that fathers cannot handle parenting (especially in the case of this father, ‘a neegroe from da eyelans’ was the Yankee stereotype, who might just end up eating his children for breakfast!)”

“Nevertheless, I persisted, never giving up on my love for my children or reneging on my responsibilities as their father,” he added.

Donald Harris did not respond to several interview requests from CNN and largely has shied away from publicity — even as his daughter stands on the cusp of another history-making milestone in his adopted country.

He did emerge publicly during Harris’ 2020 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination to publicly chastise her for joking that of course she had smoked marijuana , given her Jamaican background.

In a since-deleted statement posted on Jamaica Global Online, Donald Harris said his ancestors were “turning in their grave” to see their “family’s name, reputation and proud Jamaican identity” connected with a “fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker.”

powerpoint presentation on family history

Damien King, a retired economics professor at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica who now runs a think tank on the island, first met the elder Harris in the mid-1980s and said he was not surprised by the public rebuke. “He is somebody who has always been unafraid to speak his mind,” King said.

And among the economists who know him, Harris is considered a free thinker, willing to challenge his field’s “orthodoxy,” King added.

Former Harris student Steven Fazzari, an economist who teaches at Washington University in St. Louis, described his former professor as someone who thinks “deeply about economic theory.”

“He’s not the kind of economist who’s going to talk to you about what the GDP is going to be and what inflation is going to be in the next quarter,” he said.

Harris, who served at Fazzari’s doctoral thesis adviser at Stanford, encouraged originality and was a friendly and supportive figure to his students, Fazzari added.

Fazzari had not seen Harris for years, until he and several other former students arranged a dinner with him last fall in Washington, where Harris maintains a residence.

“It was wonderful,” he said of the dinner. “Don Harris in his mid-80s is just like the Don Harris I knew at Stanford. He was articulate. He was gracious. He remembered all of us. He remembered all of our dissertation topics.”

‘That’s my cousin running’

Kamala Harris’ ancestry has already been thrust into the center of the presidential campaign, as Trump grapples with how to confront her last-minute candidacy and reaches for a strategy to blunt her momentum.

During a combative interview at the National Association of Black Journalists’ convention late last month, Trump went personal — falsely claiming that Harris had opted to “turn Black.” He later inexplicably called her “Kamabla” in series of posts on his Truth Social site.

Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, meanwhile, has questioned her authenticity — calling her a “phony” who “grew up in Canada,” a reference to the years she spent living in Montreal, where her mother had taken a teaching position at McGill University.

The mischaracterization of Harris’ racial identity “plays into these tropes of the tragic mulatto who’s doomed and sneaky and deceptive” and belongs nowhere, said Danielle Casarez Lemi, who studies race and ethnic politics as a Tower Center fellow at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She’s also the co-author, alongside Nadia Brown, of “Sister Style: The Politics of Appearance for Black Women Political Elites.”

“It’s a way to try to damage her credibility anyway that he can,” she said of Trump. “Whether it’s going to work, who knows?”

Dahlia Walker-Huntington, a Jamaican American lawyer and longtime Harris supporter, called Trump’s comments challenging the vice president’s racial identity “condescending.”

powerpoint presentation on family history

“It is also ignorant to think that we can only have one identity” in a society that is increasingly multiracial and multicultural, said Walker-Huntington, who divides her time between South Florida and Kingston. “The America of 2024 is the America that Kamala Harris represents.”

Walker-Huntington said she has followed Harris’ career for years, going back to her time as a local prosecutor and California attorney general. She first met Harris at a Florida fundraiser in 2018 for Florida Sen. Bill Nelson’s campaign and would go on to become an enthusiastic backer of Harris’ short-lived presidential bid.

Now, along with other Caribbean American supporters, Walker-Huntington is activating networks of friends, relatives and acquaintances in the hopes of getting Harris over the top this time.

“I support her because she’s a strong woman, and she stands up for her convictions,” Walker-Huntington said. “The fact that she’s Jamaican, that’s icing on the cake. It makes me feel like that’s my cousin running for the presidency of the United States.”

powerpoint presentation on family history

CNN has reached out to the Harris campaign.

Those who know her say she celebrates her ties to the island to this day. On the eve of her swearing-in as vice president, Harris told The Washington Post that her father instilled in her and her sister a deep pride in Jamaica and its history. Walker-Huntington and Winston Barnes — an elected official in Miramar, Florida, who also hails from Jamaica — said she was quick to banter with a group of them in a Jamaican accent when they first met her at the Nelson event a few years ago.

The vice president’s cousin, Sherman Harris, said he has not seen her for years, but Donald Harris still visits with the family.

Jamaica has formally recognized Donald Harris, bestowing on him an Order of Merit in 2021 for “outstanding contribution to National Development.” Over the years, he has served as an economic adviser to the Jamaican government and helped craft a 2012 strategy to encourage economic growth on the island.

Back in Brown’s Town, there’s been talk of adding Kamala Harris’ visage to the mural of prominent Jamaicans that encircles the grounds of St. Mark’s, her cousin said. It currently includes figures such as sprinter Usain Bolt and Black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey, who was born in the parish.

But Belnavis, the mayor of St. Ann, said he is thinking bigger — a statue, perhaps, in or near a municipal building if Harris wins the US presidency.

“The murals that you see on the walls eventually will wear away and so on,” he said. “We want something more permanent.”
