Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Project Management

Earn a Doctorate in Project Management and become an asset to any and every organization.

The PhD in Project Management provides a path for the highest mastery of managing business processes in competitive local, national, and global industries. Project management is a multi-disciplinary profession that encompasses the design, process, and goals for your company projects, making you an asset to any employer. As a leader in project management, you will develop the mastery needed to determine scope and feasibility, manage time and resources, tackle deadlines, meet customer expectations, lead teams, effectively use technology, and provide business expertise throughout the many complex phases of project completion.

The PhD in Project Management program is structured for experienced professionals in this field with an appropriate undergraduate degree. Within the program, students will conduct original research in an approved area of Project Management. 

As your PhD progresses, you will move through a series of progression points and review stages by your academic supervisor. This ensures that you are engaged in research that will lead to the production of a high-quality thesis and/or publications, and that you are on track to complete this in the time available. Following submission of your PhD Thesis or accepted three academic journal articles, you will have an oral presentation assessed by an external expert in your field.

Dr. Richard Baker

Dissertation Chair

Dr. Richard Baker is Dissertation Chair of Graduate Programs at Capitol Technology University. He previously served as associate professor in Indiana State University’s Department of Aviation Technology, and as executive director of the Center for Unmanned Systems and Human Capital Development.  Richard holds a BS in mathematics and an MS in computer science from Indiana State University. He received his doctorate in information systems from Nova Southeastern University.  

Dr. Craig Capano

Dissertation Chair/Adjunct Professor

Craig D. Capano, PhD, CPC, is a Dissertation Chair and Adjunct Professor at Capitol Technology University for PhD students in Construction Science. Dr. Capano earned his PhD in Civil Engineering, Master of Construction Science and Management degree, and a dual undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering and Construction Management. He completed post doctorate work at Harvard University’s College of Education focusing on Higher Education Administration. Dr. Capano brings extensive academic and professional experience with more than 47 years of experience in the construction industry and over 25 years in academic program leadership. He currently serves as principal of The Capano Group, a consulting firm for contractors and construction education.

Dr. Ian McAndrew

Prof. Ian R. McAndrew, PhD is a mechanical engineer who has worked in education nearly 30 years. His global teaching and research began in London and, now with Capitol Technology University where he is the Dean of Doctoral Programs, have taken him around the world. He has taught in over 25 countries, holds six degrees, is qualified as an Electrical Engineer, and is an accepted fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Association Fellowship, also known as a FRAeS. He has supervised over 80 PhDs and has almost 60 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. McAndrew’s current research is in aerodynamics and low speed flight. He is frequently invited to deliver keynote speeches and is the chair of several international conferences. Additionally, he is the editor or assistant editor in chief of several international academic journals.

Eric Motycka

Director of Graduate Programs

Eric Motycka serves Capitol Technology University as the Director of Graduate Programs. Prior to joining Capitol Tech, Eric held multiple leadership positions in industries ranging from industrial coatings to financial services to Higher Education Advancement. Eric holds a BA in Literature and Writing from Burlington College, an MBA from Indiana State University, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from Indiana State University.

Graduates will contribute significantly to the creation of new knowledge and ideas, and will be prepared for in-demand roles such as a trusted subject matter expert, researcher, technician, manager, or professor.

Degree Details

This program may be completed with a minimum of 60 credit hours, but may require additional credit hours, depending on the time required to complete the dissertation/publication research. Students who are not prepared to defend after completion of the 60 credits will be required to enroll in RSC-899, a one-credit, eight-week continuation course. Students are required to be continuously enrolled/registered in the RSC-899 course until they successfully complete their dissertation defense/exegesis.

The student will produce, present, and defend a doctoral dissertation after receiving the required approvals from the student’s Committee and the PhD Review Boards.

2. Incorporate the theoretical and practical applications of Project Management to design an original research project. 

3. Apply the Project Management framework to current issues in the world.

5. Communicate findings, both in a written and oral format, to a variety of audiences. 

6. Create research works that bring forward new knowledge in Project Management.

• The application fee is $100
• The per-credit charge for doctorate courses is $950. This is the same for in-state and out-of-state students.
• Retired military receive a $50 per credit hour tuition discount
• Active duty military receive a $100 per credit hour tuition discount for doctorate level coursework.
• Information technology fee $40 per credit hour.
• High School and Community College full-time faculty and full-time staff receive a 20% discount on tuition for doctoral programs.

PhD in Project Planning and Management

Rationale for the programme:

The Doctoral Studies Programme aims to provide an opportunity to candidates with outstanding academic background to engage in advanced research studies in the field of project planning and management. Candidates are expected to have intellectual curiosity, self- discipline and a high level of motivation to be able to carry out research in their various areas of specialization and make a significant contribution to knowledge.

The programme has four areas of specialization namely: Project Design, Planning and Implementation; Project Monitoring and Evaluation; Project Management Information Systems and Project Financing. Candidates shall be required to take supporting coursework comprising six units.

To prepare Doctor of philosophy (PhD) candidates for advanced research and writing skills in their chosen area of specialization, candidates shall be required to take supporting coursework comprising seven course units to be done in a minimum of three semesters and a maximum of seven semesters

The PhD programme seeks to orient candidates to the informed and critical application of knowledge to problems and issues concerning project planning and management as a discipline and profession. The Doctoral programme is intended to enhance individual’s capacity and skills for positions involving teaching, consultancy and research in local and international institutions.

Justification:

• The school has been offering a Postgraduate Diploma and a Masters in Project Planning and Management. The PhD programme, therefore, will provide an opportunity to graduates who wish to obtain a higher degree in the same field.
• Presently, the School has graduated three cohorts at the Masters level, many of whom are demanding for the PhD programme.
• The PhD programme is expected to provide positive growth to the school in line with the University mission of being a leading center of learning, scholarship, and professional development, extending frontiers of knowledge through research and creative works
• The School has gradually expanded in terms of capacity and currently the school has 15 Lecturers with PhD degrees who are actively involved in the implementation of the School’s programmes.    

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the programme are to:

• Enhance skills in the various areas of specialization in project management;
• Provide an opportunity to candidates to carry out and present scholarly work;
• Carry out research in the chosen area of study and submit a PhD thesis
• Encourage application of creativity and critical thinking toward problem solving.
• To inculcate desirable values for responsible citizenship and good corporate management

   Common Regulations for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the University of

   Nairobi shall be applicable.

• Log on to the University of Nairobi Website application link www.application.uonbi.ac.ke .
• Type and enter or click on the slot written REGISTER to register your email with the University online application system and proceed.
• Select  the School  as School of Open &Distance Learning   and the  mode of study as ‘ distance learning’

Examination Regulations:

1. All Doctoral students shall be required to take examinations in three (3) common courses and three (3) specialization courses and pass all the six papers before they are allowed to proceed to the second part of the programme.

2.  Continuous assessment shall consist of class presentations, seminar papers, assignments and tests.

3.  A student shall be required to do course work and sit for end of semester examinations.

4. Each taught course shall be examined through a 3 hour written examination paper at the end of the semester in which it is taken.

5.  The pass mark for each course shall be fifty percent (50%).

6.  The final examination shall account for fifty percent  (  50% ) of the marks in each course, while continuous assessment shall account for the remaining fifty percent   (50%) ​​​​​​​

7. A student who fails in any course shall be allowed up to a maximum of two re-sits taken at the semester examinations.

​​​​​​​8.  A student who fails to satisfy the examiners in the second re-sit in any courses shall, on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval by Senate may be discontinued.

This new benefit applies retroactively to our program’s initial accreditation date of 2009.

America needs transformative leaders in preK–12 education whose passion for education quality and equity is matched by a knowledge of learning and development, the organizational management skills to translate visionary ideas into practical success, and a firm grasp of the role of context and politics in shaping leadership. Graduates of the three-year, multidisciplinary Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education will be prepared to become those leaders.

The Ed.L.D Program — taught by faculty from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the Harvard Business School, and the Harvard Kennedy School — will train you for system-level leadership positions in school systems, state and federal departments of education, and national nonprofit organizations. Ed.L.D. is a full-time, three-year program built on a cohort learning model. Cohorts consist of up to 25 students from diverse professional backgrounds (including district/charter management leaders, nonprofit directors, principals, teachers, and policy researchers) who progress through the program together.

All Ed.L.D. students receive a full tuition funding package plus stipends, work opportunities, and a paid third-year residency at a partner organization.

The Ed.L.D. Program prepares graduates to do work for the public good in the American public education sector, whether that be at the system or state level. Specifically, the program is designed to accelerate the progress graduates make toward achieving meaningful impact in influential roles and/or crossing boundaries in the following spaces in the public education sector:

• PreK–12 district or CMO leadership roles : superintendent of schools, chief academic officer, and/or deputy superintendent
• Foundation/philanthropy roles:  director, president and CEO, senior fellow
• Education nonprofit roles : president or executive director of backbone or collective impact organizations which support preK–12 schools. Ed.L.D. graduates will lead education nonprofits that explicitly focus on improving outcomes and opportunities for children, families, and communities.
• State or federal education leadership roles : commissioner or deputy commissioner roles. Could also include public education advocacy or education policy advisers to senior government officials.
• Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation roles:  Founder, CEO, president

Curriculum Information

The Ed.L.D. curriculum is a balance of multidisciplinary coursework and practice-based learning. Core courses and electives are taught by recognized leaders from across Harvard’s graduate programs in fields like data-based education reform, organizational change and innovation, and effective leadership strategies for urban schools. You will develop and test your leadership skills through team projects and an immersive third-year residency.

All students in the cohort take the same classes in four foundational content areas: learning and teaching, leadership and organizational change, politics and policy, adult development, and leadership inside and out (including one-on-one executive coaching). Courses taken during the first-year focus on practice-based learning and serve as the framework of your first-year experience.

Each cohort member works with program advisers to choose an individualized sequence of electives from any of the Harvard graduate schools. You will work closely with the program faculty and staff during your second year to determine the best match with a partner organization for your third-year residency. Matches are driven by mutual interest between the resident and the partner organization, and each student's career and learning goals and geographic preferences.

You will take part in a 10-month paid residency at one of our partner organizations. There, you will work on a strategic project which synthesizes your experience and learning into a written Capstone project. You will stay connected to your Ed.L.D. cohort and HGSE through technology and by returning to Harvard periodically for intensive workshops.

Paid Residency 

Our partner organizations include school systems and departments of education, as well as some of the nation's most influential and dynamic nonprofit, mission-based for-profit, and philanthropic organizations.

You will be intentionally pushed out of your comfort zones and asked to work systemically and make a significant contribution to the partner organization. In addition, the residency will provide you with the professional mentoring, practical experiences, and network of connections they need to position themselves as future leaders in the education sector. 

Strategic Project 

You will define (with supervisors from your partner organization) a strategic project on which to focus. You will have the opportunity to lead one or two major efforts on behalf of the organization, such as the creation or implementation of current initiatives. The project allows you to practice and improve leadership skills, add important value to the mission and strategy of the partner organization, work systemically, and hold high-level accountability.

During the residency period, you will produce a written Capstone. The Capstone is a descriptive, analytic, and reflective account of your third-year leadership contributions to a strategic project within an Ed.L.D. partner organization. It is a demonstration of your ability to engage others, develop strategy to successfully address and diagnose challenges, work toward a vision and goals, and learn from the results.

What is a project manager?

A project manager is a professional who organizes, plans, and executes projects while working within restraints like budgets and schedules. Project managers lead entire teams, define project goals, communicate with stakeholders, and see a project through to its closure. Whether running a marketing campaign, constructing a building, developing a computer system, or launching a new product, the project manager is responsible for the success or failure of the project.

What does a project manager do? Tasks and responsibilities

A project is typically divided into four different phases: initiation, planning, execution, and closure. 

Throughout the lifecycle of a project, the project manager is responsible for:

Managing project resources (including teams and workers)

In this position, you play a key role in a company’s success. While many technical and workplace skills go into efficient project management, honing these five skills can help you build a foundation for success in the field:

Project management can be a challenging career, but you’ll never face those challenges alone. You’ll often work alongside team members and use software or online tools specifically designed to streamline the process. The specific project management software depends on the project or company. Project management methodologies

As you learn more about project planning, you may encounter terms like Agile, Scrum, or Waterfall. These refer to various methodologies—a set of guiding principles or strategies—for managing a project. Common approaches and methodologies include:

XP (Extreme Programming)

Choosing a methodology (or a combination of methodologies) is one of the first decisions you’ll make as a project manager. Which you choose will depend on the industry and type of project. 

For example, if you’re working in software development, you may choose to employ Agile techniques. Scrum, an approach to Agile management, uses daily team meetings and short (for example 30-day) “sprints” to develop projects quickly and efficiently. The Lean method, developed by Toyota in the 1970s, seeks to maximize value and minimize waste. It’s still commonly used in the manufacturing industry.

Just about every company has projects. That means just about every company could use a project manager. 

Whether you’re interested in construction, architecture, fashion, design, computer science, robotics, or something else entirely, chances are you’ll be able to use project management skills in your career. And since it’s such a versatile career, you can leverage these transferable skills to enhance your resume, no matter where your career takes you.

How much do project managers make?

The median annual project manager salary across all industries in Canada is $87,606. Most project managers earn between $69,000 and $113,000 in industries like construction, human resources, and marketing, according to Glassdoor as of June 2024[ 1 ].

Project management: Job outlook

According to the Anderson Economic Group and Project Management Institute, Canada will see an increase of 90,000 jobs in project management in the decade leading to 2027 [ 2 ]. Job seekers with a combination of leadership and technical skills will find themselves in particular demand.

Industries like health care, manufacturing and construction, information services and publishing, finance and insurance, and management and professional services are expected to see the biggest growth in project-oriented roles, according to the PMI report.

Project manager qualifications

Project management is diverse, and you’ll find that qualifications often vary by industry and company. When looking at what you need to build a career in project management, consider two main areas: education and certification.

Higher education

A bachelor's degree is typically the minimum requirement to become a project manager, and many project managers have a degree in business, computer science, or an industry-related field. While not always a strict requirement, a degree can help you develop the leadership skills you’ll need on the job. Some companies may look for candidates with a graduate degree, such as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a Master of Science in Management (MSM).

Certifications

Whether you’re just graduating from college or looking to pivot to a new career in project management, a professional certificate or certification could help enhance your resume and make you more appealing to hiring managers. 

Project Management Professional (PMP): If you already have a few years of experience working on projects in a professional setting, you can advance your career with the PMP credential from the Project Management Professionals of Canada. 

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM): If you're just getting started in project management, the CAPM is an entry-level project management certification. Adam Wooten, Program Director: MA in Localization Project Management

Faculty Spotlight: Adam Wooten

Adam Wooten is an associate professor in the translation and localization management program and previously taught similar courses at Brigham Young University (BYU), where the localization minor he designed became BYU’s fastest-growing minor.

With more than 15 years of experience in the language industry, he is an active localization tech/AI consultant and the former CEO and co-founder of the localization company AccuLing, a partnership with the developers of Fluency translation technology. He has experience working in many roles in the language services industry including project manager, marketing executive, translator, and court interpreter.

A frequent writer and speaker on global business topics, Wooten has written the Word on the Street column for the localization industry’s leading publication, MultiLingual magazine. He previously wrote a column for the Deseret News, in which he used humor to teach lessons on international business, language, and technology. He is co-founder of Silicon Slopes Localization, an IMUG-style industry networking group in Utah, and speaks at many localization industry events including those organized by LocWorld, TAUS, ATA, GALA, AMTA, ALC, and IMUG.
