Program Details

Program structure.

The program is structured to be completed in four years.

In the first two years, you will complete 11 half-credit courses and write the comprehensive exams. Comprehensive exams are typically completed at the end of your second year.

In the third and fourth years of the program, you will focus on completing your dissertation proposal and dissertation. In order to develop and refine your research skills, you are expected to engage in research throughout the program.

You will also complete a non-credit course on university teaching.

Faculty with Supervisory Status

While we do not require you to have an approved faculty supervisor selected when you apply, we encourage prospective applicants to learn about the interests and ongoing research of our faculty members. Available Fields

Challenge yourself and work with experts in your field as you write and defend your doctoral dissertation. You can pursue research in any of our five fields: 

• Accounting  

The Accounting field in Laurier’s PhD in Management program prepares you for an academic career. You will be encouraged to focus your learning and research in empirical financial accounting or behavioural accounting.

Our program provides students with a breadth of knowledge of accounting theory and research methodologies. Through teaching and research assistantships, coursework, seminars, and independent research, students develop analytical and interpretive skills as well as intellectual independence. We welcome applications from students in accounting or related fields, such as finance or economics.

We have one of the largest Accounting programs in Canada with 34 faculty and lecturers. Over the past 21 years, we have had 10 gold medallists on the Uniform Final Evaluation (now the Common Final Examination, administered by CPA Canada); this is more than any other university in Canada.

The Marketing field in Laurier’s PhD in Management program offers you the opportunity to conduct research on contemporary topics of theoretical and managerial significance. Our areas of specialization include consumer behaviour, innovation, marketing strategy, brand management, and services marketing. We welcome applications from those with education and/or experience in business and marketing or a relevant field such as psychology and economics.

Our program centres on theory development, empirical analysis, and developing managerially relevant knowledge. Consumer Research Lab

The state-of-the-art Consumer Research Lab is equipped with 20 computer terminals, a projector, and software for controlled experimental studies and survey-based, online data collection. The lab also includes a small break-out room with a one-way mirror for focus groups, interviews, and other tasks relevant to research studies.

Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management (OB/HRM)

Our PhD in Management degree program with a concentration in Organizational Behaviour (OB) and Human Resource Management (HRM) is a four-year program. In the first two years, you will complete courses and your comprehensive exams. In years three and four, you will focus on research with your supervisor and other faculty members. Opportunities for teaching are also available. If you complete your MSc in Management with us, you will receive credit for those courses you have already completed, which can decrease the length of the time it takes to complete this degree. This program is designed for students who wish to become academics and researchers.

You will have the opportunity to work closely with leading scholars in the field of OB/HRM and be involved with cutting-edge research throughout your studies. We only admit a small number of students each year to ensure that our students can receive the mentoring that they need to succeed in an academic career. You will receive personalized guidance and individualized attention as you develop your own research and prepare for your career.

Our faculty members devote an extensive amount of time and energy into developing our students’ research capabilities and skillsets. Learning Outcomes: OB/HRM

You can expect coursework that is designed to provide a solid theoretical foundation in OB/HRM combined with exceptional statistical and methodological training, including research methods, research design, and quantitative analyses. You will also have the opportunity to delve deeper into topics with special topic courses, electives, and directed studies.

You will conduct your own research under the guidance of our faculty supervisors. You are expected to engage in research throughout the program, culminating in the completion of your dissertation.

You will have exposure to cutting-edge research from our faculty supervisors and guest speakers, as well as networking opportunities within the academic community.

Admission Requirements

• A master’s degree in business or related field with a minimum B+ standing.
• Evidence of strong quantitative skills, normally by successful completion of the GMAT Focus exam with a score of 595 or higher (formerly GMAT score of 650 or higher). You can consult the GMAT conversion table . We will also accept a GRE score. A GRE score must convert to the minimum 595 GMAT Focus score required. Please note that the GMAT/GRE requirement is mandatory for the application and cannot be waived.
• Proficiency in English.
• Applications are reviewed by the graduate program committee, which considers all prior university grades, a statement of research interests, an academic writing sample, and letters of reference.

Application Checklist

Applications will be considered until the program is full.

After you have submitted your OUAC application , paid the non-refundable application fee, and Laurier has received your application, you'll receive an email from [email protected] advising you to upload the additional required documentation to Laurier’s Online Registration and Information System (LORIS) .

Please note, the application process and the uploading of supplemental documentation, which includes references, typically takes two weeks. To avoid disappointment, apply early.

An application for admission to our PhD program in Management must include:

• The OUAC Application Summary, which is generated after you complete your OUAC application (log back in to OUAC to retrieve it).
• Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work. Documents must be dated within the past six months.
• A completed statement of intent.
• A resume of your academic and work experience. Include a history of your publication and scholarly paper activity and any other information you feel will interest the admissions committee.
• A sample of your scholarly writing (10-20 pages in length). This may be a chapter of your master's thesis or a paper written for a graduate course.
• Completed reference forms . Two academic references are required. Note: Reference forms are electronically submitted to Laurier by the referee and do not need to be uploaded.
• Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) test scores. GMAT test scores of at least 85 percentile are standard. Where appropriate, corresponding Graduate Records Examinations (GRE) scores will be accepted.

English Proficiency

Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential to graduate studies at Laurier. Applicants whose language of instruction during their previous postsecondary education was not in English must submit evidence of proficiency in English. If applicable, results from accepted testing services must be uploaded to  LORIS .

The PhD program is central to the mission of the Asper School of Business at UM. The program was founded in 1990 and our commitment reflects the increasing need for Canadian-trained management academics   The AACSB-accredited program has already fulfilled the expectations of students and faculty and continues to attract highly-qualified individuals who are interested in developing their research and teaching skills.

The PhD program in management is designed to produce graduates who have competitive research and teaching skills and the abilities necessary for placement in teaching positions in Canada and the world.

Expected duration: 4 years

Tuition and fees:  Tuition fees are charged for terms one and two and terms four and five. A continuing fee is paid for term three, term six and each subsequent term. (Refer to Graduate tuition and fees .)

Throughout their doctoral studies, students are engaged in research apprenticeships with the faculty. Students are assured of working with faculty members on several projects during their program and are required to spend a specific number of hours per week working for a faculty member during the term and in the summer. In this way, students are assured of receiving hands-on experience with the research process.

Students are expected to publish conference papers or journal articles during their program. Travelling to conferences and presenting research is a great way to meet other researchers in your field and gain exposure for your work.

Because the PhD program is designed for individuals who wish to pursue an academic career, a teaching practicum is required to help students develop teaching skills.

Program requirements

The PhD program consists of 30-39 credit hours of courses plus a thesis.

• All PhD students must complete both core and other course requirements.
• The core course are comprised of 12 credit hours (four courses) and are based on the student's departmental concentration area in the list outlined below.  
• The core course requirements must be completed regardless of previous professional and/or academic background. (some of the other course requirements may be waived based on previous courses completed in a Masters program).
• All students must complete PHDM 7140 Management Research Project 1 (a theoretical paper) and PHDM 7150 Management Research Project 2 (an empirical paper), both of which are zero credit, pass/fail courses.

Other course requirements

Other course requirements (for all streams) may be required and could include:  

• 1 Philosophy of Science in Management course PHDM 7110 (Note:  Finance students are exempt from this requirement) (3 credit hours);
• 3 Methods or Statistics courses (9 credit hours; or up to 6 courses [18 credit hours] for Finance);
• 2 minor/cognate courses (at least one of which is outside the Asper School of Business; 6 credit hours or up to 3 courses [9 credit hours] for Finance students)

Since students completing an Asper School of Business Ph.D. will be conducting research and teaching in topics related to management, they will be required to have a basic breadth of knowledge in management. Students with a previous business degree will not be required to complete this requirement, but students without a business degree will be required to audit at least one (1) and up to three (3) courses, preferably at the 7000 level, outside their core area in business.   

The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the PhD in management program. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

Those applying to the Asper PhD in management program should possess:

• An earned Master's degree from a recognized institution in a management or business discipline, or in a cognate or foundational disciplinary area (e.g. psychology, sociology, economics, mathematics), with minimum 3.0 G.P.A.;
• A minimum 600 GMAT score (or GRE equivalent);
• English Language Test score, where applicable
• Three letters of reference
• Appropriate research interest and capability as evidenced by a statement of purpose; and,
• A thesis from a recognized institution;
• A major research paper from a recognized institution;
• An independently completed research article published in a refereed journal;
• An independently completed research working paper presented at a conference; and/or
• Other evidence of an appropriate nature, such as written class research projects and term papers.

In addition to the admission requirements described here, all applicants must meet the minimum admission and English language proficiency requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies .

PhD in Entrepreneurship and Organization

The first program of its kind in Canada, the Conrad School’s PhD in Entrepreneurship and Organization offers emerging entrepreneurship researchers the unique opportunity to study alongside our world-class faculty within Waterloo’s distinctive innovation ecosystem.

The program equips students to conduct independent scientific research in the domains of Entrepreneurship and Organizations .  This program builds on the fundamental theoretical foundations of the organizational behaviour and strategy literatures. It is different from traditional Management PhD programs, as it applies an entrepreneurial lens and studies behaviour in entrepreneurial contexts.

Program Structure

The PhD program includes intensive coursework, a comprehensive exam, a thesis proposal, and rigorous research work. Students will gain a strong understanding of the strengths and limitations of a wide range of quantitative and qualitative methods, as well as theories used in entrepreneurship research, while also developing their skills to carry out their own independent research. 

This program is offered full-time only, on campus, and takes 12 terms (4 years) to complete.

BET 701 Entrepreneurship Theory

This course will offer insights into the main theories and issues in the studies of entre/intrapreneurship and innovation. It will also discuss the complex and dynamic reality of the entrepreneur and the innovating organization as well as explore research traditions, methodologies, and approaches in entrepreneurship research.

BET 702 Organization Behaviour

This course will offer an understanding of classic and contemporary issues in organizational behaviour. Drawing on theory and research in psychology, social psychology, and organizational behaviour, this course will explore individual, interpersonal, and group processes in work organizations.

BET 703 Business Strategy

This course will examine the current state of knowledge in strategic management. Topics may include the sources of competitive advantage, the role of industry evolution and technology, the organization of top management, and managerial decision-making and cognition. It will also cover alternative theoretical perspectives and available empirical evidence related to these topics.

BET 704 Business Research Methods

This course will examine the different stages in the research process beginning with how to frame research questions, speculate hypotheses, understand the merits of alternative research methods, and cover topics and provide examples in areas such as experimental design, survey design, case studies, and archival research. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to critically evaluate research methods and design choices for their own research. 

In addition to the above four courses offered through the Conrad School, students will also be required to successfully complete two graduate-level method or data analysis courses available through other departments at the University of Waterloo. 

Comprehensive Examination

Students will take a comprehensive exam in the fourth term. The exam will measure the breadth and depth of the student’s knowledge of the academic discipline and the qualitative and quantitative methods in that discipline.

Students must complete the comprehensive exam before proceeding to their thesis.

As part of the degree requirements, each student will present their thesis proposal to a Thesis Examination Committee. The exam will include a critical assessment of students’ thesis proposal based on a written report provided in advance. The Committee will examine the student’s understanding of the proposed research, suggested theoretical framework, methods, and whether the proposed research makes an original contribution to the candidate’s academic discipline.

The thesis must contain original research which makes a distinct contribution of knowledge to entrepreneurship and organization research.

Students will accomplish independent and original research work. Working closely with an academic supervisor, the work will involve both theoretical and empirical components.

Please note that securing a supervisor is not required when applying.

International Business (IB) combines international expertise with the functional areas of General Management, emphasizing issues facing the multinational enterprise (MNE) and businesses engaged in dealings across national borders. The strength in this combination allows students to explore a deeper understanding of the cross-border intra- and inter-organizational relationships of the MNE, and incorporates a multi-level approach that also addresses the economic, institutional, sociocultural, and sociopolitical contexts in which the MNE is embedded.

The IB group at Ivey encourages students to engage with the academic community early, with many students presenting their work at the Academy of International Business and Academy of Management Annual Conferences. Our students deliver high-quality research that has frequently been recognized in  leading dissertation award competitions , including those presented by the Academy of Management IM Division , the Academy of International Business , and the European International Business Academy . Ivey’s IB area group’s PhD graduates are frequent winners or finalists of these awards.

PhD students regularly co-author with senior scholars in the IB group, and their papers have received Best Paper Awards at: Academy of International Business Annual Meeting, Academy of Management Annual Meeting, Strategic Management Society Annual International Conference, Administrative Sciences of Canada Annual Conference, and Association of Japanese Business Studies Annual Conference.

Our current  IB group at Ivey consists of Paul Beamish , Klaus Meyer , Andreas Schotter , Vanessa Hasse , Nina Rosenbusch , and Elie Chrysostome . Though the common theme of IB unifies these colleagues, they draw on varied disciplinary bases to address issues of strategic alliances, foreign direct investment, subsidiary management, and boundary spanning leadership. They are particularly interested in studying these themes in emerging economies, including multinational enterprises originating from emerging economies. Leveraging their diversity, the IB group is interested in understanding IB phenomena from a multi-level and multi-disciplinary perspective. The International Business Institute supports this research.

IB is one of five possible specializations within Ivey’s General Management PhD program. The IB specialization is designed for those interested in pursuing academic careers at top business schools in IB, Strategy, or Management departments.

The IB group welcomes applications from qualified candidates that are interested in conducting research into themes related to their research interests. The following list is indicative of such projects:

All Professors within the IB group are recruiting PhD students to join their research on the management of MNE subsidiaries . Such subsidiaries interact with, and contribute to, host societies in multiple ways that merit deeper scholarly investigations. Topics within this research agenda may examine any aspect of the strategies and operations of MNE subsidiaries, including the drivers of subsidiary growth, performance knowledge management, scope reductions and divestment as well as their contribution to host country economic, social, and environmental objectives. We are particularly interested in research exploring the role that individuals, such as boundary spanners, have on subsidiary- and MNE-level outcomes. Sample research:

• Managing the MNE subsidiary: Advancing a multi-level and dynamic research agenda  (Journal of International Business Studies)

Professors Paul Beamish and Vanessa Hasse are recruiting for a co-supervision of PhD students with a research interest in the area of international joint ventures (IJVs) and strategic alliances . Topics within this research area can range broadly from collaborative strategies to the management of IJVs and strategic alliances. Experience with or an interest in quantitative data analysis, especially using larger datasets, will be an asset. Sample research:

• Host market government corruption and the equity-based foreign entry strategies of multinational enterprises  (Journal of International Business Studies)
• Multi-party international joint ventures: Multiple post-formation change processes  (Journal of World Business)

Professor Andreas Schotter is recruiting PhD students wishing to pursue research into the internationalization of firms in the digital economy . Topics in this line of research may employ qualitative or quantitative methodologies to examine the internationalization of young firms in the digital economy, or the strategies of mature multinational firms reacting to disruptions caused by the digital economy. This research also looks at changing location choices and the emergence of new internal and external organizational structures. Sample research:

Professors Paul Beamish and Vanessa Hasse are recruiting for a co-supervision of PhD students with an interest in (and ideally direct exposure to) international business within frontier markets and the world’s poorest economies. Professor Klaus Meyer is recruiting PhD students with a research interest in the strategies and operations of multinational enterprises originating from emerging economies . Multinational enterprises from countries and regions such as China, India or South-East Asia face distinct challenges and opportunities arising from the economic and political structures of their home economies. This line of research is in particular exploring how companies address the strategic and operational challenges of catch-up strategies, including the engagement with market and nonmarket actors at home and abroad. Professor Andreas Schotter is recruiting Ph.D. students wishing to pursue research at the intersections of international business, economic geography, and innovation, with as particular focus on how Industry 4.0 forces shape multinational enterprise (MNE) activities and the future of work in global value chains. The research considers firm level lenses from corporate strategy and the theory of the firm and microfoundations lenses, bringing the manager into the focus, while considering the rapid changes in the external environment, such as the emergence of digital technologies and increasing global connectedness. The emphasis will be on novel configurational theorizing and methods that seek to accommodate the multiplicity of actors—individuals, firms, industries, countries—and multiplexity of interactions among these actors. Vanessa Hasse is an Assistant Professor of International Business at the Ivey Business School. Her primary research interests focus on exploring firm-level responses to performance signals (including those triggered by crises/rare events) in an international context, as well as the impact cultural and temporal dimensions have on managerial decision-making.   

Her research has been published in outlets such as the Academy of Management Journal, Global Strategy Journal , and more. She has received international recognition for her work, including the 2023 IM Division Best Paper Award in OB/HRM/OT (AOM) and the 2017 IM Division D'Amore-McKim School of Business, Northeastern University, Best Dissertation Award in International Management (AOM).

Dr. Hasse has authored several case studies and has been recognized as a management educator for her innovations in designing transformative learning experiences. She is the recipient of multiple Teaching Excellence Awards (2021/2022/2023) and was named a Finalist for the 2021 Academy of International Business Teaching Innovation Award. Dr. Hasse is a board member at the Academy of International Business-Canada chapter.

Tuition & aid

GET STARTED

We are proud to provide our new PhD students with guaranteed funding for the first 5 years. This amount comes from a variety of sources (scholarships, donor grants, etc.) and teaching activities. In addition, the cost of living in Montreal is significantly lower than in most other large North American cities.

There are many different sources for funding for PhD students throughout their time in the program. Please see the information below to learn more.

New – A guaranteed funding of $ 100,000 for 5 years + Tuition fee waiver for the first 3 years

Funding support from the program, overall description.

The John Molson School of Business and Concordia University provide a funding to all newly admitted PhD candidates for a period of five years. The total value of this funding exceeds $115,000 for the Canadian students ($150,000 for the international students), detailed as follows. All fundings are conditional to good academic standing, which includes being compliant with the standard timeline.

Tuition fee waiver

Any admitted candidate benefits from a total fee waiver (corresponding to approximatively $8,000 for Canadian candidates and to approximatively $46,000 for international students, subject to annual regulatory changes) during their first three years.

Financial support for conferences and doctoral consortium

Grants are available for doctoral students during their first five years of the PhD program, to assist them with conference travel (maximum of $1,200 per fiscal year) or to attend a doctoral consortium (500$ once), in addition to a possibility to apply for funding from the School of Graduate Studies (between $250-$1,000 per term for 5 years).

Guaranteed funding

Doctoral students receive a total of $100,000 guaranteed funding for the five first years, corresponding to approximatively $20,000 per year. This amount includes from a variety of sources (scholarships, donors grants, etc.) and teaching activities (100 hours of teaching assistantships per year during the first three years, teaching one course and 50 hours teaching assistantships per year during years four and five). This funding covers the estimated annual expenses for a student living in Montreal.

Additional funding

Doctoral students are encouraged to apply to competitive external grants such as SSHRC, CHIR, NSERC, etc. and to competitive internal awards (calls issued by John Molson School of Business, Concordia University, School of Graduate Studies, etc.).

Doctoral students could also receive additional funding for research assistantships or additional teaching tasks.

Non Accumulation Rule

Students will receive partial guaranteed funding in certain cases that include but are not limited to:

• Students who receive additional funding (internal or external awards, salaries, etc.)
• Students who transfer course credits from a previous PhD program.
• Students who receive full or partial funding from their country of origin for their studies.

Students commit to declare to the PhD Office all their additional sources of funding, whether obtained at Concordia University or elsewhere.

Graduate awards & fellowships

Each year entrance scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. The number and amounts vary depending on the availability of funds.  Every year the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) offers many Fellowships and Awards to graduate students. Research Assistantships

Many graduate students receive support in the form of a stipend paid by a faculty member holding a research grant. If you are interested in a Research Assistantship position please speak to professors in your department.

Teaching Assistantships

John Molson School of Business typically allocates funds annually to individual departments for teaching assistants, markers, lab demonstrators, conference leaders, etc. Contact professors in your department for details.

PhD Conference Travel funding

This is a grant to assist PhD students with conference travel. Funding is available to a maximum of $1,200 per fiscal year (May 1 to April 30). Students must apply for this funding a minimum of one month prior to the date of travel. To allow equitable allocation of the travel funds available, conference attendance should be planned, and support requested, well in advance of the trip. Please note that the University does not fund more than one author (sole presenter) from university funds,

This award is not intended to fully fund the cost of the conference travel, but rather to help defray some of the cost. All applications must comply with the  travel policies  of the University. More details (e.g. allowable expenses, per diem rates) can be found in the  Travel Handbook .

Eligibility:

Students must be registered in the PhD in Business Administration program and must be within the first five years of their program and considered in good standing. This award is not applicable to students who have graduated.

Please submit the following documents by email to Dolores Mosquera, administrative assistant, research and PhD program, at [email protected] :

• Letter of acceptance from the conference organizer indicating the complete name of the conference and the title of the paper
• Names of co-authors, if any
• Letter of Support from the supervisor indicating the importance of the conference (to be sent to the Program Office)
• Budget: Details of travel expenses to be incurred for presentation at the conference. Please list all allowable expenses in a single table with column titles: Item, Total amount (estimated or actual), Amount to be charged to JMSB, Amount covered by other sources (e.g., supervisor), Remainder-out-of-pocket. Possible expenses include conference registration fee, flight, accommodations (include number of days), meals per diem (include number of days), etc.

Reimbursement

After the conference, log into your CU Account, click the UNITY link, go to "My Expense Report" and proceed. Please ensure that your expense report claim includes the following: all original receipts, proof of funding approval from the Graduate Program Director, boarding passes, travel receipts, conference program featuring your presentation time and paper title, hotel receipts, meal receipts and conference registration. The expense report must be submitted within 10 days after the conference has ended. If you have any questions or concerns about your expense reports, contact [email protected] .

PhD student research (thesis) funding

This grant is to help students, together with their faculty supervisor, achieve their thesis research objectives. Funding is available to a maximum of $3,500 per student. Download the  CASA Fund Grants to Faculty to Assist PhD Student Research  document and application form .

Doctoral Consortium funding

This is a grant to assist PhD students with the cost of attending a consortium. Funding is available to a maximum of $500 once during their first five years of the PhD Program. 

In order to allow for processing time, the application must be received a minimum of one month prior to the date of the workshop. A limited amount of funding is available for PhD in Business Administration students. To allow equitable allocation of the funds available, attendance should be planned, and support requested, well in advance of the trip.

This award is not intended to fully fund the cost of the consortium, but rather to help defray some of the cost. All applications must comply with the travel policies of the University. More details (e.g., allowable expenses, per diem rates) can be found in the Travel Handbook .

• Documentation regarding acceptance to the consortium, organizers and location.
• Stage of progress in the PhD program, indicating entry date and expected time to completion.
• Letter of support from your supervisor.
• Please list all allowable expenses in a single table with column titles: Item, Total amount (estimated or actual), Amount to be charged to JMSB, Amount covered by other sources (e.g., supervisor), Remainder-out-of-pocket. As of February 26, 2024, all new applications for an Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program ( OINP ) nomination must include the Applicant Consent Form .

The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program ( OINP ) is the province’s economic immigration program. It works in partnership with the Government of Canada through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada ( IRCC ) .

Foreign workers, international students and others with the right skills, experience and education apply to the OINP for a nomination.

The OINP recognizes and nominates people for permanent residence who have the skills and experience the Ontario economy needs, and the Government of Canada makes the final decision to approve applications for permanent residence.
