Home to an international community of talented biomedical scientists, BIGS DrugS 6 6 is the hub for doctoral candidates from pharma research institutes within the University’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and Faculty of Medicine.

BIGS-OAS offers a wide range of courses within a research context, focused on the cultures and societies of Asia and Asia Minor.

This three-year doctoral program  is offered in conjunction with the University’s ImmunoSensation Cluster, which is funded by Germany’s Excellence Initiative.

Part of the University of Bonn’s Center for Development Research, BIGS-DR   trains students for an international career in development cooperation, policy or research through a combination of academic study and intensive tutorship.

The BIGS Land and Food combines the research at the agricultural Faculty with an interdisciplinary study program.

Clusters of Excellence stand for international and interdisciplinary elite research and offer young scientists excellent funding and career conditions. The University of Bonn currently has six clusters of excellence, more than any other university in Germany, and thus opens up a broad spectrum of possible research topics to doctoral candidates. PhD Programs within our Excellence Cluster

The goal of the Hausdorff Center of Mathematics is to identify and address mathematical challenges of the 21st century, to advance groundbreaking fundamental mathematical research worldwide, and to develop the mathematical methods and tools required by science and society.

Part of the Hausdorff Center is also a graduate school: The Bonn International Graduate School of Mathematics (BIGS-M) hosts all doctoral students of mathematics and contributes to the outstanding international reputation of the university in this field. The duration of the program is usually 3 years, and the doctorate (Dr. rer nat.) can be earned as a degree.

ImmunoSensation2 aims to continue the success story of the existing ImmunoSensation cluster. While the emphasis so far has been on fundamental research in particular of the innate immune system, now the mechanisms of immune intelligence are to be uncovered, i.e. the question of how the body succeeds in adapting immune responses to specific situations and then remembers this in order to be optimally prepared for similar challenges in the future. The cluster's graduate school, the Bonn International Graduate School Immunosciences and Infection offers a structured, three-year doctoral program.

Until today, dependency studies has almost exclusively dealt with slavery on the American continent or in antiquity. The Cluster of Excellence "Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS)" aims to broaden this perspective in terms of content, space and time. Within the framework of the cluster, a structured doctoral program with a duration of 4 years is offered.

Over the last few decades, computer hardware has become smaller and smaller, but their technology remains more or less the same. Slowly, this development is reaching its limits.Thus, we need new technologies that satisfy our growing hunger for even more powerful hardware.

Quantum physics could be a solution.

Together with the University of Cologne and the RWTH Aachen, Bonn researchers want to work on making this new technology usable. To achieve this, quantum bits or even qubits - the quantum counterpart to our previous bits - quantum communication channels that build networks and error correction methods have to be explored from the ground up. As part of the Excellence Initiative, the Bonn-Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy (BCGS) offers a doctoral program with an integrated honors program.

The ECONtribute researches the functioning of markets as well as reasons for their failure. In doing so, the cluster goes beyond traditional analyses by systematically combining model-based theoretical approaches and behavioral explanatory models while incorporating legal and political frameworks. Within the cluster, the Bonn Graduate School of Economics (BGSE) offers doctoral students a tailored structured doctoral program that includes an internationally recognized research network.

Increasing agricultural production despite limited land while reducing the ecological footprint of agriculture - this is one of the challenges of our time. For this reason, the University of Bonn and Forschungszentrum Jülich are jointly developing methods and new technologies to observe, analyze, better understand and more specifically treat plants. The cluster's graduate school, the Theodor Brinkmann Graduate School, offers an interdisciplinary study program to master's students and doctoral candidates at the Faculty of Agriculture.

Bonn International Graduate School of Mathematics (BIGS-M) 2 17 18 18 Located at the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics, BIGS-M provides an umbrella for all Bonn PhD students in mathematics. Thus, the BIGS-M contributes to the excellent national and international reputation of mathematics at Bonn.

Bonn International Graduate School Immunosciences and Infection The BIGS Immunosciences and Infection is a structured 3-year PhD program in conjunction with the ImmunoSensation Cluster/Bonn. The ImmunoSensation Cluster is part of the Excellence Strategy.

DFG Research Training Group "Gegenwart/Literatur. Geschichte, Theorie und Praxeologie eines Verhältnisses" (GRK 2291) [only in German] The Research Training group supported by the DFG  aims at the exploration and analysis of the constitutive dimensions of the concept of contemporary literature.  

DFG international Research Training Group "Myeloid antigen presenting cells and the induction of adaptive immunity" GRK (2168) 19 19 19 19 The DFG-funded project is a cooperation of the University of Bonn and the University of Melbourne. The principal research focus is the intersection between innate and adaptive immunity in the context of infection.

DFG Research Training Group  "The Macroeconomics of Inequality"  ( GRK 2281) 20 20 20 20 The research program focuses on the macroeconomic aspects of inequality, an aspect of first-order importance for society. 

DFG Research Training Group "Template-designed Organic Electronics (TIDE)" (GRK 2591) 21 21 21 The Graduate Program 'Template-Designed Optoelectronic Devices' (TIDE) aims to provide comprehensive doctoral education in the field of Organic Electronics (OE) to meet the requirements of highly qualified and multidisciplinary professionals. 

DFG Research Training Group "Tools and Drugs of the Future - Innovative Methods and New Modalities in Medicinal Chemistry" (GRK 2873) The goal of the RTG " Tools and Drugs of the Future" is to modernize medicinal chemistry and train a new generation of medicinal chemists and researchers at the interface with interconnected disciplines. In addition, the projects are intended to contribute to the development of new drug substances.

Integrated Research Training Group at the DFG Collaborative Research Centre "Synaptic Micronetworks in Health and Disease" (SFB 1089) 22 22 27 27 Located at the newly inaugurated SFB 1089 on neuronal networks, the Integrated Research Training Group offers a structured graduate program for all doctoral researchers at the Centre.

Integrated Research Training Group at theDFG Collaborative Research Centre "Future Rural Africa" (SFB/TR 228) The integrated research group is investigating the relationship between land use change and shaping the future in rural Africa in a total of 14 subprojects.

Integrated Research Training Group at the DFG Collaborative Research Centre "Open System Control of Atomic and Photonic Matter" (SFB/TR 185) 24 The collaborative research centre Oscar will explore the physics of open systems.

Integrated Research Training Group at the DFG Collaborative Research Centre "Aortic Diseases" (SFB/TR 259) 25 The aim of this research initiative is to better understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of resident and non-resident cells in aortic diseases.

Integrated Research Training Group at the DFG Collaborative Research Centre "Regional Climate Change: Disentangling the Role of Land Use and Water Management" (SFB 1502) The SFB combines the strengths of the University of Bonn and its project partners to answer one of the most difficult questions in understanding climate change.

Integrated Research Training Group at the DFG Collaborative Research Centre "Brown and Beige Fat - Organ Crosstalk, Signaling and Energetics (BATenergy)" (SFB/TRR 333) The CRC investigates metabolism/diabetes and focusses on brown adipose tissue. 

One Health and Urban Transformation

The NRW Forschungskolleg One Health and Urban Transformation is a transdisciplinary graduate school that aims to find interventions to achieve optimal health for humans, animals, plants and the environment with a special focus on developments in NRW, Saõ Paulo, Accra and Ahmedabad.

International Max Planck Research School Moduli Spaces 27 27 In cooperation with the University of Bonn, the renowned Bonn Max-Planck-Institute for Mathematics offers a PhD program with a special focus on the study of moduli.

International Max Planck Research School for Astronomy and Astrophysics 28 28 In cooperation between the Max-Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy and the Universities of Bonn and of Cologne, the Research School facilitates 3 years of PhD studies with a curriculum tailored to the individual student.

International Max Planck Research School for Brain and Behavior 29 The IMPRS for Brain & Behavior is a cooperation between the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology of Behavior - caesar, the University of Bonn and the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Bonn

International Max Planck Research School - Recharge IMPRS-RECHARGE focuses on interdisciplinary research between chemistry and physics with an emphasis on catalytic mechanisms, physical-chemical analysis and energy topics. Scientific challenges shall be looked at from different angles. Furthermore the combination of theory and practice is a vital aim of the IMPRS-RECHARGE.

Marie Curie Innovative Training Network "Macro and Microplastic in Agricultural Soil Systems“ (SOPLAS) The SOPLAS project will assemble a multidisciplinary team to study the nexus of plastic–agriculture–soil. It will also train a new generation of leading experts. The project aims to identify the plastic cycle within agricultural soil systems and support the development of environmental policies related to mitigating the impact of plastics. The findings will advance our knowledge about the sustainable use of plastics in European agriculture.

Marie Curie Innovative Training Network "Early Stage Researchers EDUCational Program on Factor VIII Immunogenicity“ (EDUC8 ) 32 37 The EDUC8 program is a multidisciplinary training program with exposure of the enrolled ESRs to a core common educational package and development of individual PhD researchprojects dedicated to decreasing the societal burden associated with the development of anti-FVIII antibodies in Europe.

Marie Curie Innovative Training Network "Research and Training in Early Life Nutrition to Prevent Disease" (GROWTH)

GROWTH is an Innovative Training Network that aims to train young business-oriented researchers in developing pathological insights, biomarker diagnostics and personalized nutritional interventions for intestinal failure in neonates and preterm infants.

Tools4Teams - "Research Training to Design and Implement Tools Supporting Safe Teamwork in Healthcare"

The Tools4Teams research project will prepare the next generation of teamwork experts to contribute new insights and smart technologies for safe and effective care. Tools4Teams brings together expertise from social and technical sciences, human-centered design, education, and clinical specialties.

Trinational Graduate College "Mass and Integration in Antique Societies" [in German/French] Supported by the Deutsch-Französische Hochschule since 2011, the tri-national Graduate School in Ancient History offers curriculum events in Bonn, Berne, and Strasbourg.

A German PhD usually takes 3-4 years. Traditional programmes focus on independent research, but more structured PhDs involve additional training units (worth 180-240 ECTS credits) as well as placement opportunities. Both options require you to produce a thesis and present it for examination. Many programmes are delivered in English.

PhDs in the Department of Mechanical Engineering

Application for admission & enrollment.

PhD students at TU Dortmund University must submit an application for admission to the doctoral procedure to the doctoral committee of the faculty. The requirements and documents to be submitted are documented in the respective doctoral regulations. 

After admission by the doctoral committee, doctoral candidates must enrol for the doctoral programme and prove this to the doctoral committee usually within 3 weeks.

Requirements for the doctorate

First, check the requirements for admission to the doctoral program. The following requirements must be met in principle:

  • Completed university studies at a state-recognized university (decision by the doctoral committee).
  • Confirmation of supervision by a doctoral supervisor/doctoral supervisor
  • Possibly proof of German language skills (regulated by the respective doctoral regulations)

All further requirements and necessary documents for the application for admission to the doctoral program can be found in the corresponding doctoral regulations of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

If your application for admission to the doctoral program has been approved by the doctoral committee, you will receive a certificate that you will need for enrollment.

In the case of procedures already in progress, the chairperson of the respective examination board decides whether the oral part of the doctoral performance can be carried out in the current situation.

In the positive case, he or she is responsible for the proper conduct of the oral part and in particular for compliance with the safety conditions. A sufficient safety distance of at least 2 meters between all persons is to be ensured. The number of listeners must be limited so that this condition can be observed. The candidate is responsible for compliance with the safety conditions after the announcement of the result of the doctorate.

Welcome to the doctoral program „Berlin Industrial Engineering and Management“ (BIEM)

TU Berlin’s doctoral program “Berlin Industrial Engineering and Management” (BIEM) lends support to doctoral students in their pursuit of a doctoral degree. While this program is aimed primarily at the internal and external doctoral students at Faculty VII , doctoral candidates from other faculties can also profit from BIEM, provided their research relates to economics and engineering topics. BIEM’s primary commitment is to offering high-quality training to young scholars with the goal of producing excellent researchers. By providing young scholars research-oriented courses, close and structured scientific support as well as supervision, BIEM offers early career researchers the opportunity to develop the necessary skills and competences to successfully conduct their own research projects.

Candidates seeking to enroll in the BIEM program must be in possession of a signed agreement of supervision with a professor at Faculty VII and be registered as a doctoral student at TU Berlin .

Meeting Dates of the Doctoral Commission

All requests need to be submitted at least four business days prior the meeting of the doctoral commission in order to be considered. Usually the meetings are on Mondays, that means submission of the documents until Wednesday before the meeting.

The application to the doctoral program at the Faculty of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering has to be performed at the individual research groups .

Please send your application data to the head of the research group, who will serve as scientific supervisor during the doctoral procedure.

Admission as Doctoral Student

Those aspiring doctoral candidate status need to submit an application including following documents:

  • transcript of records bachelor of science (Zeugnis mit Gesamtkredits)
  • final grade certificate bachelor of science (Urkunde)
  • transcript of records master of science (Zeugnis mit Gesamtkredits)
  • final grade certificate master of science (Urkunde)
  • curriculum vitae

All documents have to be submitted at least four business days prior to the meeting of the doctoral commission in order to be considered. Since originals of the aforementioned records and certificates need to be presented as well, a personal contact is required.  An appointment is obligatory. In accordance to the “Landeshochschulgesetz HG NRW 2014 §67(5)” and the “Promotionsordnung 2014 §5(1)” students working on their doctoral thesis are obligated to join the doctoral program by an enrollment with the faculty.

The doctoral candidate status is restricted to four years but it can be extended on request. The application for extention for the first two years has to be submitted using the following link . Afterwards the applications for extension have to be submitted by mail using the following ( form ).

The doctoral candidate status is restricted to four years and it can be extended twice up to six years using following link .

There might be an opportunity to extend this period further based on certain live situations (e.g. pregnancy). These requests have to be submitted by mail using the following ( form ).

Submission of the Doctoral Thesis

The contents of the doctoral thesis must be distributed within the scientific community in order to finish the doctoral program successfully (Promotionsordnung 2014, §18(3)). Please be aware that this might cause copyright issues with previous publications, such as journal articles. It’s therefore advised to check your own copyright situation prior to writing your thesis! A monographic doctoral thesis requires a final distribution by a commercial publisher (e.g. Shaker, Dr. Hut and Cuvillier) or an online publication by the University (Eldorado). A cumulative doctoral thesis does not require such a distribution, since the information is already available in the journal articles. The introduction and text body (Manteltext) of a cumulative thesis should therefore be limited to information mentioned in the publications (PromO 2014, §18(3) “…Veröffentlichung in ungekürzter Form…”). In this respect it is not recommended to include unaccepted journal articles in the thesis, due to the risk of subsequent changes.

Upon finishing the thesis the doctoral candidate has to upload several documents. In order to be considered by the doctoral commission the documents have to be submitted at least four business days prior to the meeting. The printed version of the thesis can be sent as parcel or be handed in at the doctoral office. In this case an appointment is obligatory ( promotionsausschuss.bci tu-dortmund de ).

  • PDF-file "separate title page"
  • PDF-file "form regarding co-author contributions" signed by supervisor *

  • PDF-file "plagiarism check" signed by student and supervisor (first 5 pages) and upload! In case of unclear citations please upload the whole report with active links.

Oral Examination

After complete submission of the documents to the doctoral office the doctoral commission reviews all documents and appoints an examination board. The doctoral commission is not obligated to follow the suggestions of the candidate. The doctoral commission requests the supervisor to schedule the oral examination with the candidate as well as the members of the examination board. Afterwards all participants of the examination are invited by the doctoral office and the reports are requested from the referees. The student has the opportunity to read the reviewer reports three to five business days prior to the examination in the doctoral office. Copies, records and personal notes are not allowed and an appointment is obligatory ( promotionsausschuss.bci tu-dortmund de ).

The head of the examination board informs the student about the grades right after the examination, a confirmation letter is sent from the doctoral office to the student afterwards.  

Due to the Corona situation the following procedure has been defined by the faculty of BCI for oral doctoral examinations:  

  • Contrary to the “Promotionsordnung” it is possible to take the exam during the corona crisis in presence of the members of the examination board only.
  • An appointed external member of the examination board (“externer Gutachter”) is obligated to participate in the examination. A conferencing service like (Zoom, Webex etc.) might be used to comply with this rule.
  • The doctoral examination has to be open to the members of the faculty. This can be achieved by conferencing service as well. In order to control the access a registration in advance is recommended.
  • The technical aspects related to the conferencing service are organized by the doctoral student. One further person joining the examination physically is advised.
  • If there are technical issues and the external member of the examination board or the members of the faculty cannot join the procedure the examination will be canceled.
  • The doctoral student has to apply (scanned letter with signature) for this kind of examination by the doctoral commission ([email protected]).

If you agree to this procedure, you have to send an informal letter, indicating that you wish to do your exam in accordance with these regulations when submitting your thesis!

Finalization

The student is obligated to implement the examination board's comments in the final version of the thesis within one year (date of oral examination). Furthermore the  title page  has to be changed and the administrative appendix (section "Submission of the Doctoral Thesis" items marked with *) has to be removed from the thesis.

There are multiple different modes for publication of the final thesis in the “Promotionsordnung §18(3)”, three of which are common:

  • Monographic dissertations are usually published by an official publisher (e.g. Shaker, Dr. Hut and Cuvillier ). A confirmation letter of the publisher is required containing author, title, ISBN number and information about minimal circulation. 10 paper copies need to be provided to the doctoral office.  
  • Another strategy to publish a monographic dissertation is the electronic publication by the library of the university . Therefore a PDF-File (type A) and 10 paper copies are required to be provided to the doctoral office. An additional  form  is needed.  
  • For cumulative dissertations 10 paper copies are required containing the text body as well as the publications and have to be handed in at the doctoral office.  

For finalization, the required amount of 10 copies of the thesis as well as the below-mentioned documents have to be submitted at the doctoral office. The printed version of the thesis can be sent as parcel or be handed in at the doctoral office. In this case an appointment is obligatory ( promotionsausschuss.bci tu-dortmund de ).

Additionally the following document have to be uploaded using the following link .

  • PDF-file "final title page"

The final version of the printed thesis is transferred to the members of the examination board by the doctoral office for cross checking.

After the approval of the members of your examination board you receive a mail asking for a finalization of your documents. You have to upload

  • PDF-file "form for certificate data" signed by student and supervisor ( form )
  • PDF-file "actual curriculum vitae" signed by student

 This is your last task before the certificate can be issued.

Afterwards the approval of the examination board 4 copies of the dissertation are submitted to the library by the doctoral office (not by the doctoral student). The library sends a confirmation to the doctoral office. The date of the library confirmation letter has to be filled-in in above-mentioned form by the doctoral office. Please leave it blank.

Now the certificate can be issued by the dean's office.

It usually takes three months and the certificate will be sent by registered mail from the dean’s office.

Facility for Rare Isotope Beams

At michigan state university, investigating the conditions for a new stellar process.

A scientific research team studied how the barium-139 nucleus captures  neutrons in the stellar environment in an experiment at  Argonne National Laboratory ’s (ANL)  CARIBU facility using FRIB’s Summing Nal (SuN) detector . The team’s goal was to lessen uncertainties related to lanthanum production. Lanthanum is a rare earth element sensitive to intermediate neutron capture process (i process) conditions. Uncovering the conditions of the i process allows scientists to determine its required neutron density and reveal potential sites where it might occur. The team recently published its findings in  Physical Review Letters   (“First Study of the 139Ba(𝑛,𝛾)140Ba Reaction to Constrain the Conditions for the Astrophysical i Process”).

Artemis Spyrou , professor of physics at FRIB and in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University (MSU), and Dennis Mücher , professor of physics at the  University of Cologne in Germany, led the experiment. MSU is home to FRIB, the only accelerator-based U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC) user facility on a university campus. FRIB is operated by MSU to support the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics as one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities.

Combining global collaboration and world-class educational experiences

The experiment was a collaborative effort involving more than 30 scientists and students from around the world. Participating institutions included the  University of Victoria in Canada, the  University of Oslo in Norway, and the  University of Jyväskyla in Finland. 

“The collaboration is essential because everyone comes from different backgrounds with different areas of expertise,” Spyrou said. “Together, we’re much stronger. It’s really an intellectual sharing of that knowledge and bringing new ideas to the experiment.”

The international collaboration also included five FRIB graduate and two FRIB undergraduate students. FRIB is an educational resource for the next generation of science and technical talent. Students enrolled in nuclear physics at MSU can work with scientific researchers from around the world to conduct groundbreaking research in accelerator science, cryogenic engineering, and astrophysics. 

“Our students contribute to every aspect of the experiment, from transporting the instrumentation to unpacking and setting it up, then testing and calibrating it to make sure everything works,” Spyrou said. “Then, we all work together to identify what’s in the beam. Is it reasonable? Do we accept it? Once everything is set up and ready, we all take shifts.”

Measuring the i process 

Producing some of the heaviest elements found on Earth, like platinum and gold, requires stellar environments rich in neutrons. Inside stars, neutrons combine with an atomic nucleus to create a heavier nucleus. These nuclear reactions, called neutron capture processes, are what create these heavy elements. Two neutron capture processes are known to occur in stars: the rapid neutron capture process ( r process) and the slow neutron capture process ( s process). Yet, neither process can explain some astronomic observations, such as unusual abundance patterns found on very old stars. A new stellar process—the i process—may help. The i process represents neutron densities that fall between those of the r and s processes.

“Through this reaction we are constraining, we discovered that compared to what theory predicted, the amount of lanthanum is actually less,” said Spyrou. 

Spyrou said that combining lanthanum with other elements, like barium and europium, helps provide a signature of the i process. 

“It’s a new process, and we don’t know the conditions where the i process is happening. It’s all theoretical, so unless we constrain the nuclear physics, we will never find out,” Spyrou said. “This was the first strong constraint from the nuclear physics point of view that validates that yes, the i process should be making these elements under these conditions.”

Neutron capture processes are difficult to measure directly, Spyrou said. Indirect techniques, like the beta-Oslo and shape methods, help constrain neutron capture reaction rates in exotic  nuclei . These two methods formed the basis of the barium-139 nucleus experiment.

To measure the data, beams provided by ANL’s CARIBU facility produced a high-intensity beam and delivered it to the center of the SuN detector, a device that measures gamma rays emitted from decaying  isotope beams. This tool was pivotal in producing strong data constraints during the study.

“I developed SuN with my group at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, the predecessor to FRIB,” Spyrou said. “It’s a very efficient and large detector. Basically, every gamma ray that comes out, we can detect. This is an advantage compared to other detectors, which are smaller.”

The first i process constraint paves the way for more research

Studying the barium-139 neutron capture was only the first step in discovering the conditions of the i  process. Mücher is starting a new program at the University of Cologne that aims to measure some significant i  process reactions directly. Spyrou said that she and her FRIB team plan to continue studying the i process through different reactions that can help constrain the production of different elements or neutron densities. They recently conducted an experiment at ANL to study the neodymium-151 neutron capture. This neutron capture is the dominant reaction for europium production.
