Speech on Water Pollution in English for Students

Water pollution is the contamination of water usually by human activities such as throwing garbage and sewage waste in clean water bodies. Due to the continuous use and exploitation, there is water pollution occurring all around us. Water pollution is one of the most important issues which every country is facing right now.

If you are looking for a persuasive speech about water pollution, refer to the speeches below - a long speech on water pollution and a short 2 minutes speech on water pollution. These informative speeches will help the students to understand the what, why, and how’s of water pollution.

Long Informative Speech About Water Pollution

Hello, everyone. Thank you for having me. Today I want to talk about water pollution, its causes and how it can be controlled.

Water is the basic need for survival. It has been used by living things for ages. Life without water cannot be imagined. Water is the most important element that cannot be replaced by any other element. Due to the continuous use and exploitation, there is water pollution occurring all around us.

Water pollution is one of the most important issues which every country is facing right now. Water pollution is the result of continuous economic growth. As the population grew, water was exploited with that. The main source of water pollution includes the overflow of domestic sewage in clean water bodies. Dangerous organic and chemical waste from industries is dumped in various river bodies. The toxic chemicals present in industrial waste not only pollute water but also kill aquatic life.

The major pollutant industries are fertilizers, pesticides, refineries, metal plating, etc. Sewage waste and garbage from houses are carelessly thrown into clean water bodies by the citizens.

Water pollution remains a major issue in most developing countries which includes India. In India, many people die because of water pollution. Around 80% of India’s water bodies are severely polluted as people dump raw sewage and garbage into the rivers and lakes. This has led to water being undrinkable and which in turn causes the vast majority of the population to heavily rely on expensive drinking sources. The condition of water pollution is so bad in India that every year 1.5 million children die from malaria.

Reasons for India’s increased problem in water pollution are that India suffers from urbanization, Unauthorized slums have been established and no proper pipelining by the government. Due to overpopulation, many underprivileged people decide to live in slums where they drink contaminated water which causes diseases. Another reason is no proper pipelining is done by the government as a result of which the sewage water gets mixed up with the drinking water. The industries in India release organic and chemical waste directly into the water bodies. To sum up oil leaks, poor sanitization, no proper waste, and sewage treatment, and open defecation are considered to be the leading cause of water pollution in india . Children drink this contaminated water that causes a major bacterial attack on the digestive system, which results in diseases like diarrhea, etc.

So, how can we control this problem? Well, the government should adopt more scientific and improved methods for handling the disposal of sewage and garbage. To control the spread of diseases, a proper method of sterilization of water should be developed. When it comes to Industries, the harmful industrial effluents should be neutralized and properly before discharging into water bodies. When it comes to agriculture, a minimization should be done in the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

To conclude, I want to say that water pollution is the result of the negligence shown by mankind. I believe it’s a warning by mother nature towards us to take care of our water bodies. As a citizen and a fellow human, it is the duty of each and every person to take care of water bodies around. Do not throw garbage and waste into river bodies. As a citizen, make sure that no one is also polluting the water bodies. Water pollution cannot be eliminated, but it could be controlled by everyone if they think about the future. If we take care of mother earth and the resources, she will take care of us. Thank you!

Short Speech on Water Pollution

Good morning everyone! Today I want to talk about water pollution, its causes and how it can be controlled. A human body could survive without food for three days but it cannot survive without water for a day. It has been used by a living organism for ages. Life without water cannot be imagined. Water is the most important element that cannot be replaced by any other element. Due to the continuous use and exploitation, there is water pollution occurring all around us.

Water pollution is considered a major issue in India as many people die in India because of unknowingly drinking polluted water. The condition of water pollution is so bad in India that every year 1.5 million children die from malaria.

The reasons for water pollution in India are oil leaks, poor sanitization, No proper waste, and sewage treatment, and open defecation are considered to be the leading cause of water pollution in India. Children drink this contaminated water that causes a major bacterial attack on the digestive system, which results in diseases like diarrhea, etc.

Water pollution could be controlled if needed precautions are taken. It is the responsibility of the government to come with new scientific methods for handling domestic sewage and garbage.

The harmful industrial effluents should be neutralized and properly before discharging into water bodies.

To conclude this speech, I want to say that water pollution could be controlled if necessary measures are taken by everyone. Humans have exploited the resources provided by the Earth for a very long time and the result of that exploitation is various pollutions like water, air, etc. As a responsible human being, who wants a better future for the coming generation takes care of your surroundings. Do not throw garbage near water bodies and report anyone who does. Things last forever if we take care of them. Thank you.

4. What are the main causes of Water Pollution?

Water pollution When dangerous substances—often chemicals or microorganisms—contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, the water quality deteriorates and the water becomes toxic to humans or the environment. Some freshwater systems supply clean drinking water as a vital ecosystem function, however due to pollution, roughly 785 million people throughout the globe do not have access to safe drinking water.

Main causes of Water Pollution includes:

a. Domestic sewage: Plant nutrients, mostly nitrates and phosphates, are abundant in sewage. Excess nitrates and phosphates in water encourage algae development, resulting in algal blooms, which are extremely dense and fast growths.

b. Toxic waste: Toxic waste is poisonous, radioactive, explosive, carcinogenic, and or bioaccumulative, which increases in concentration at the higher ends of food chains.

c. Sediment: Surface runoff can carry sediment (e.g., silt) into water bodies as a result of soil erosion.

Other reasons could include oil spillage. Oil spill is currently one of the leading causes of water pollution.

Speech on Water Pollution for Students and Children

Speech on water pollution.

Water pollution is a very serious environmental issue that we are facing right now. Water gets polluted when the physical, biological and chemical properties deteriorate due to human activities. Further, water pollution is responsible for impacting the lives of humans and animals as well. It is extremely hazardous to the environment and must be curbed right away. You might think that the water you drink daily is clean but it contains pollutants. Thus, we need to adopt measures that will help prevent water pollution on a global level for a healthier lifestyle.

speech on water pollution

Critical Concern

As mentioned above, water pollution is a significant threat to the ecosystem and the sustenance of life. The major cause responsible for water pollution is definitely the industries that dump waste into water bodies. They do not properly treat the waste and directly dump the harmful toxins in the water.

Thus, it hampers the quality of aquatic life badly. The aquatic species consume the harmful chemical which is present in the water and die because of it. Consequently, it is a huge threat to the ecosystem whether on land or water. Moreover, these chemicals also reduce the oxygen content in the water bodies.

Further, we see that the brutal use of fertilizers and pesticides that are done in the agricultural sector pollutes the water bodies greatly. When the discharge is not regulated and sanitation is not proper, it contributes to water pollution. Moreover, the humans and animals who consume this water from the polluted water bodies have a negative impact on their health.

Besides, these polluted water bodies have become home to bacteria and germs. Thus, they cause waterborne diseases and epidemics like diarrhoea, cholera, and more. Similarly, they also contaminate underground water when it seeps through the soil.

Thus, we need to prevent water pollution by adopting proper waste management policies. A single organization, government or individual won’t be able to accomplish this task. We need to do it collectively.

Ways to Prevent Water Pollution

We can all collectively control water pollution to a large extent. We need to realize that pollution’s solution is dilution. There are several methods through which one can control water pollution. To begin with, the sewage pollutants contain a lot of toxic materials. So, they must be chemically treated in order to make them less toxic.

A factor which contributes to this pollution is organic insecticides so we can reduce it by using less stable chemicals in their manufacturing process. Further, there must be regulation of industries, as they shouldn’t be allowed to dump the waste into water bodies.

Similarly, there must be proper sewage treatment plants in every city. This will allow using the same water in factories and also irrigation. Moreover, this water can also serve as a great fertilizer. In addition, we must also adopt measures to reduce the occurrences of oil spills.

On an individual level, we can also do our bit to prevent water pollution. Begin by saying no to plastic as it remains in our oceans for thousands of years. Reuse the items so there is less waste production. Try limiting the use of detergents and bleaches, and if necessary, use environment-friendly detergents.

All in all, it is very essential for all to start practising a lifestyle which does not contribute to water pollution. We need water to survive and there won’t be life without it. Thus, to make the world a better place for the upcoming generations, we must start working from now.

Persuasive Speech Topics on Water

Student giving a persuasive speech

Research Paper Topics on Environment & Water

The best persuasive speeches take a stance on a controversial or unusual issue. Water is a basic building block of human life, fueling our bodies, growing our crops and cleaning our cities. But the earth's water supply is increasingly overtaxed by human use and choked with pollution. The agreement that our planet has a water problem and the widely diverging opinions on what to do about it make water a topic with plenty of potential for persuasive speeches.

Water Shortages

Dry, barren landscape with cracked earth

A persistent headline grabber around the world, water shortages due to drought, overuse or a combination of the two are both devastating and common. Since more than a billion people around the world lack reliable access to clean, safe water, water shortages offer several compelling speech topics. The need to reduce water consumption through more efficient infrastructure could make a persuasive speech topic, especially in drought-stricken regions where conservation is particularly relevant. For a more controversial spin, you could argue that the droughts causing water shortfalls are the product of climate change and call on audiences to reduce their carbon footprints .

Water Pollution

Dead fish in polluted water

While it would be hard to argue that water pollution is good, you could argue for any of several approaches to handling water pollution. For example, you could write a speech arguing in favor of green rooftops and green streets , techniques the cities of Chicago and Portland have adopted to combat water contamination. Alternatively, you might speak in favor of foreign aid programs to help developing countries police polluters . In developing countries as a group, 70 percent of all industrial waste ends up in the water supply without being treated, according to National Geographic.

Privatization of Water Supplies

World Bank building

Historically, most countries have operated their water distribution systems as government-owned utilities, but a movement attempting to privatize water systems is creating controversy. Some organizations, such as the World Bank Group, view privatization as essential for growth. High-scoring persuasive speeches might take a stance for or against privatization. Proponents of privatization argue profit motives will inspire companies to expand their facilities, bringing clean water to more people, more efficiently. Opponents say privatization will just hand power over a life-sustaining resource to the world's wealthiest companies. A speech on either side of the controversy could make compelling points.

Water Technology

Desalination plant

New technologies for cleaning water or harnessing its power also provide opportunities for persuasive speech topics. For instance, you might argue that governments should invest more in water desalination research. Desalination, the process of removing salt and other contaminates from ocean water or brackish water, could provide a nearly limitless supply of potable water, but is extremely expensive. Other researchers are studying how water might be used as a fuel source to power cars or even rocket engines . A persuasive speech could discuss the need to invest in these technologies, or the reasons these technologies might cause unforeseen consequences.

Don’t let the plastic get into the ocean.

  • Don’t Let the Plastic…

May 2, 2018

  • Water: If you use a reusable water bottle, you personally could avoid an average of 156 plastic bottles annually—this sounds like a small thing but it’s doing your part and multiply it by everyone in your office, home, or school, and it really starts to add up. Likewise, bring your coffee mug with you—the go-cup might be paper, but the lid is probably not.
  • Carriers: Bringing your own bag to shop (and carrying one with you just in case) can help make a dent in those 4 trillion plastic bags used each year. Bag fees and bag bans do work to reduce waste—with immediate effect on cleanup statistics as to what is collected following their implementation.
  • Straws: Remembering to ask for no straw can become a habit. Straws only by request is a huge first step—and a great thing to ask of your favorite restaurant. Paper and reusable straws are an option too—and the movement is slowly growing.
  • Clothing: Limit how often you wash synthetic clothing, including fleece. Seek out natural fibers (bamboo, cotton, wool, etc.).
  • Entertainment: Remember our roots—we can use glasses, cloth napkins, and real cutlery at events as much as we can. We can use compostable tableware, napkins, and other products (and compost them).
  • Prevention: Beach, stream, and river clean ups actually help, even though they seem like a drop in the bucket. Many organizations host regular clean ups and we need everyone to pitch in and pick up in their own neighborhood.
  • multiple movies, events, and other outreach seems to have drastically increased ocean plastics awareness,

Persuasive Essay Example: Water Pollution Should be Stopped

“People don’t realize that water in the liquid state is very rare in the universe.” Water is very rare and we are polluting it. People are putting more than 8 million tons of water pollution in the world's oceans each year. In 2000 EPA.gov found that 55% of freshwater and reservoirs are polluted. We need to start trying to stop water pollution for the health and safety of humans and animals but also for the environment.

How does Water Pollution Affect the Future of Probable Water?

Only 1.2% of the earth's water is drinkable, the rest of the clean water is frozen in glaciers and ice caps. Many people all over the world do not have access to clean drinking water. Water pollution can get into those systems and affect the water. Almost half of the world's wetlands have been polluted or destroyed because of pollution. Ecosystems are also getting damaged by water pollution like the Aral sea in Asia was one of the worlds largest freshwater lakes but now the lake has lost an area “ like the size of lake Michigan.” Now the lake is very salty because of the pollution. NRDC.gov found that almost 80% of the world's waste water goes back to the environment.

How does Water Pollution Affect the Environment?

A study caried out by NRDC.gov have shown that over 40% of Americans rely on groundwater access and factories are affecting that water that they use on a daily basis. Factories are also polluting freshwater areas and oceans. Some factories need to utilize water supplies for making products and cooling down systems but factories can reduce the use of water that they are using. “ Water and air, the two essential fluids which all life depends on, have become global garbage cans.”  Most of the world's water pollution is caused by domestic sewage. Which is the used water from homes. The average family wastes 180 gallons of water each week. Water pollution can cause algae to bloom and that can make the oxygen levels lower in that area. “This dearth of oxygen, known as eutrophication, suffocates plants and animals and can create “dead zones'' (NRDC 2018). Algee can also release neurotoxins which could be harmful to marine animals who swim though that area.

How is Water Pollution Affecting Humans and Animal Health?

Humans are dumping plastics and waste into the ocean and that is killing marine life. Marine life is eating the plastics and plastic bags and suffocating them. Plastic kills more than just marine life it also kills birds and mammals. Water pollution is destroying environments, especially coral reefs. Many diseases are caused by polluted water. According to EPA.gov groundwater systems go through the ground and pick up nutrients and carry them to water tables but when pollution can get in it can pose a serious health threat. Being exposed to toxins that could be in drinking water can be dangerous for humans and animals. “Thanks to animal agriculture, our water contains an abundance of manure, pesticides, antibiotics, nitrates, and arsenic.” According to the WHO, over 80% of human diseases are waterborne. According to CDC.gov, over 60% of deaths from diarrheal illness can be traced back to unsafe water. In 2018 water pollution killed more than 1.8 million people.

We need to stop water pollution. Now is the time to start doing stuff to help prevent more water pollution in the future. Some things you could do is put all your recyclables in the recycling bin. Pick up litter and throw it in a garbage can. You could donate to sites like https://theoceancleanup.com/donate/ they help clean up water pollution.

102 Water Pollution Essay Topic Ideas & Examples

Water pollution essays are an excellent way to demonstrate your awareness of the topic and your position on the solutions to the issue. To help you ease the writing process, we prepared some tips, essay topics, and research questions about water pollution.

🌎 Air and Water pollution: Essay Writing Tips

🏆 best water pollution essay topics & examples, 📌 remarkable air and water pollution research topics, 👍 good research topics about water pollution, ❓ research questions about water pollution.

Water’s ready availability in many locations makes it an easy choice for a variety of purposes, from cleaning to manufacturing to nuclear reactor cooling. However, many companies will then dump water, now mixed with waste, back into rivers or lakes without adequate cleaning, leading to significant environmental pollution.

However, there are other types of harm, such as noise pollution, which are less obvious but also dangerous to sea life. It is critical that you understand what you should and should not do during your writing process.

The stance that big manufacturing industries are the sole culprits of the damage done to the world’s rivers and oceans is a popular one. However, do not neglect the effects of other water pollution essay topics such as microorganisms.

Microbes can spread dangerous illnesses, making them a danger for both water inhabitants and the people who then use that water. Furthermore, they can eat up oxygen if left unchecked, starving fish and other water organisms and eventually making them die out.

Such situations usually result from agricultural practices, which can lead to powerful nutrients entering the water and enabling algae and other microorganisms to grow excessively. An overly lively environment can be as harmful as one where everything is threatened.

With that said, industrial manufacturers deserve much of the attention and blame they receive from various communities. Construction of dedicated waste-cleaning facilities is usually possible, but companies avoid doing so because the process will increase their costs.

You should advocate for green practices, but be mindful of the potential impact of a significant price increase on the global economy. Also, be sure to mention more exotic pollution variations in your types of water pollution essay.

Provide examples of noise pollution or suspended matter pollution to expand on the topic of the complexity of the harm humanity causes to the ecosphere.

You should show your understanding that there are many causes, and we should work on addressing all of them, a notion you should repeat in your water pollution essay conclusions.

However, you should try to avoid being sidetracked too much and focus on the titles of pollution and its immediate causes.

If you stretch far enough, you may connect the matter to topics such as the status of a woman in Islam. However, doing so contributes little to nothing to your point and deviates from the topic of ecology into social and religious studies.

Leave the search for connections to dedicated researchers and concentrate on discussing the major causes that are known nowadays. By doing this, you will be able to create an excellent and powerful work that will demonstrate your understanding of the topic.

Here are some tips for your writing:

  • Be sure to discuss the different types of pollution that is caused by the same source separately. Surface and groundwater pollution are different in their effects and deserve separate discussions.
  • Focus on the issues and not on solutions, as an essay does not provide enough space to discuss the latter in detail.
  • Be sure to discuss the effects of pollution on people and other land inhabitants as well as on water creatures.

Water Pollution Speech - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

Speech on water pollution.

The pollution of water bodies such as lakes, seas, rivers, oceans, as well as groundwater. This type of pollution occurs when pollutants reach bodies of water, without any treatment. Waste from factories, homes and other structures gets into the water bodies and hence, water gets contaminated.

Water pollution causes problems for the species as well as ecosystems. It affects the growth of plants and organisms living in the water. The color of the contaminated water is usually green or brown but normally water is colorless.

Agriculture is one of the major sources of water pollution. The fertilizers given to the crops for better growth are washed into rivers and lakes, which in turn pollutes the water.

10 Lines On Water Pollution

When harmful impurities or pollutants are released into the water bodies, it is known as water pollution.

Pollutants degrade the quality of water and make it unfit for consumption.

Many aquatic animals die due to the presence of toxins in the water.

Industries and factory effluents are the major cause of release of water pollution.

Human activities such as agriculture use synthetic products like fertilizers and pesticides causing serious water pollution from rain to underground water.

If the polluted water is consumed, it may cause diseases like diarrhea, cholera, jaundice and typhoid.

Washing and bathing in the water bodies also cause water pollution.

The quality of drinking water should be checked from time to time to prevent epidemics.

Necessary steps must be implemented to stop or prevent water pollution.

Proper disposal of waste should be done.

Water Pollution Speech - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

Short Speech On Water Pollution

Water is a precious resource, and life would be impossible on earth without it. That’s why every single drop of water must be taken care of. Water is required in almost all our household chores as well as for other commercial purposes. We need water for drinking, cooking, washing, fishing, irrigation, etc.

Even after knowing the importance of water, we still waste it and do not make wise use of it. Water is used recklessly without even thinking. Garbage and industrial waste from homes and industries are dumped in oceans and rivers resulting in the pollution of water. Other toxic pollutants that run out of factories and pesticides from agricultural practices also get discharged into the water causing further pollution in water.

The poor system of water supply and interaction of the water supply line with sewage also degrade the quality of water and thus make it unfit for drinking. Contaminated water can cause serious threats to the existence of humans as well as animals.

Developed countries occasionally suffer from the problem of water pollution. Water pollution is caused mainly due to the unnecessary use of pesticides in order to protect the agricultural harvest. The problem of water pollution in these countries is not because of the poor garbage management system like underdeveloped countries but, it is due to the reckless use of chemicals and toxic substances which is far more dangerous compared to underdeveloped countries.

Both developed as well as underdeveloped countries are facing the same problem. Strict laws should be implemented in order to stop the dumping of garbage or any other toxic waste in the water. Also, the government must adopt water conservation techniques so that misuse of water can be avoided.

Long Speech On Water Pollution

We all know that our society is facing a severe water crisis, therefore we need to find an immediate solution. Life originated in water and is unimaginable without it. Water in its pure form is colorless, tasteless and odorless. But high levels of contamination have deteriorated the quality of pure water.

Water pollution arises due to contamination such as the discharge of pollutants like domestic, biological, industrial, chemical, physical and so on. Water pollution consists of physical or chemical change in its property that has an adverse effect on the health of humans as well as other organisms. At present, it has become a cause of global concern but the level of water pollution differs from one country to the other and also differs from region to region.

Based on the source of contaminant, it can be of several types, such as:

Pesticide Pollution

Bacterial Pollution

Metallic Pollution

Thermal Pollution

Radioactive Pollution

Domestic Waste And Sewage RunOff

Domestic waste usually includes organic wastes like food leftovers, vegetable peels, domestic garbage, cloth, toiletries and runoff of human excreta due to bathing, household cleaning, laundering and food processing. Domestic sewage contains organic wastes when these are discharged into water bodies and increases the level of BOD. Biological oxygen demand is the amount of oxygen needed for the decomposition of organic wastes present in the water bodies. Increased level of BOD causes a serious threat to the lives of aquatic animals.

Pesticides are the chemical compounds required for pest control. The runoff of the agricultural fields when discharged in water results in pesticide pollution of various water bodies like streams, rivers and lakes. Pesticides have an adverse effect on the lives of aquatic organisms, which include fishes and even insects.

These chemical compounds are usually very stable and disintegrate partially to form several toxic compounds in the environment. Pesticides which are used to kill insects are either organic phosphorus compounds such as Malathion or chlorinated hydrocarbons such as Endrin, DDT and Aldrin. These compounds are very stable and lead to accumulation in the tissues of aquatic chemicals. The level of accumulation is found more in the higher trophic levels.

Industrial Effluents And Discharge

Industries are responsible for creating several organic and inorganic wastes, which eventually enter into the water bodies and pollute them. When the aquatic environment becomes polluted and toxic, it not only affects the aquatic animals but also gets accumulated at the bottom of the water bodies and finally enters into the bodies of the aquatic organisms. Objects, such as metals, tires, cans, plastic materials and polythene further accumulate in the water and pollute it.

Therefore serious measures should be followed to decrease the levels of contamination in water bodies. Also, we need to find solutions to eradicate this problem by

1. Implementing laws and penalties on factories and industries regarding their treatment and waste management.

2. By educating people and spreading awareness about the adverse effects of Water Pollution.

3. Treatment of waste products before disposing of them in water bodies helps reduce water pollution. Agriculture and other industries can reuse this wastewater by decreasing its toxic contents.
