Nandamuri Kalyan Ram has been looking for a hit from quite some time now. He is back with his latest presentation Patas, which is directed by debutante Anil Ravipudi. This action entertainer which also stars Shruthi Sodhi as the female lead has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Kalyan Sinha(Kalyan Ram) is a corrupt police officer who gets himself transferred to Hyderabad. Once he lands there, he misuses his power and starts minting money. During this process, he also encourages a local politician(Ashutosh Rana) who has become a huge headache to the DGP(Sai Kumar) of Hyderabad.

Twist in the tale arises when the DGP comes to know that there is a shocking truth behind Kalyan Sinha’s arrival to Hyderabad. What is that truth ? Why did Kalyan Sinha become a corrupt officer ? To know answers to these questions, you need to watch the film on the big screen.

Plus Points:-

Major plus point of the film is the heavy dose of entertainment. Credit should completely go to director Anil Ravipudi for creating an energetic character for Kalyan Ram, and also adding decent amounts of comedy right throughout the film. Not once during the entire film tempo drops and excitement continues right till the end. Even though story of this film is routine, the way it has been narrated is amazing.

This is probably Kalyan Ram’s career best role and he excels in his character. As showcased in the trailers, he is quite energetic and showcases decent acting skills in all his powerful scenes. The hard work that he has put in, be it for his dances or his fights, everything shows on screen. Heroine Shruthi Sodhi is a decent find and looks good on screen. Balakrishna’s remix song has been shot exceptionally well, and is one of the highlights of the second half.

Comedian Srinivasa Reddy is the highlight in the comedy department. His role as Kalyan Ram’s sidekick is efficient as he provides decent comedy right throughout the first half. All his scenes with Kalyan have also come out well. Ashutosh Rana and Sai Kumar do their respective roles well. The late M S Narayana once again entertains us as Shining Star Subhash. While the first half has hilarious entertainment, second half has high voltage confrontation episodes.

Minus Points:-

As said earlier, story of this film is quite stale and old. There is nothing much going story wise and the plot is also predictable. Heroine Shruthi Sodhi has nothing much to do in the film and comes only during the songs. Certain logics regarding the police department go missing in the film. A few fights could have been trimmed to cut short the run time.

Technical Aspects:-

Music is a huge asset as all the songs are pretty good, and have also been shot quite lavishly. Sai Karthik’s background score is superb and elevates all the confrontation scenes to another level. Camerawork is good and showcases the thrills well. Dialogues are perfect and suit the mood of the film.

Director Anil Ravipudi walks away with the cake in Patas. It is his racy narration that works superbly for the film. Right from the word go, he has made sure that there is enough fun and showcases Kalyan Ram in a powerful role. Screenplay is crisp and does not leave much scope for any lags.

On the whole, Patas will surely end up as Kalyan Ram’s biggest hit till date. Hero’s powerful characterization and huge doses of entertainment right throughout are major assets of the film. All those who do not mind the routine story line and are looking out for sheer fun, then this commercial potboiler should not be missed.

Patas Review

Behind the Movie Patas: Nandamuri hero Kalyan Ram urgently needs a strong hit to prove his mettle both as hero and producer. With inputs from brother Junior NTR, he accepted the script of ‘Patas’ provided and directed by debutant Anil Ravipudi. Let us see, how loud the cracker blasted in theaters. 

In the Movie Patas: Story begins with introduction of corrupt politician cum local goon GK (Ashutosh Rana) in Hyderabad, who hates police. Soon lands, ACP Kalyan Sinha (NKR) in Hyderabad to take charge under higher officer (Sai Kumar). In no time, Kalyan begins to shake hands with GK encouraging his criminal activities. Soon after, blood relation between Kalyan and Sai Kumar is revealed, a mysterious death in city alerts police with suspects being GK’s brother and his friends. This brings a sea of change in Kalyan’s sincerity and duty mindedness. Here on there is high voltage confrontation between Kalyan and GK with twists, turns and high dose of action.

Values of the Movie Patas: Putting it straight on nose, ‘Patas’ is a film of two people. One Kalyan Ram, two is Anil Ravipudi. They both have put a perfect commercial mass entertainer before us. No lags, no boring moments… any time, the film has come out alive with racy narration. Story picked by Anil has zero freshness. This one belongs to old tested formula of 1990s extended to present generation in the form of variety of cops. However, Anil was different in treatment and the balanced addition of commercial ingredients kicked the film to high level offering a feast for Nandamuri Fans. More than screenplay, the way Anil sequentially arranged the episodes in second half (like Quran scene followed by MRPF followed by Arey O Samba song) showed the perfect skill in this young man to catch the pulse of common audience. This is what one expects from a debutant director and he delivered it. Writer in him also came out on time to enhance the final output. 

Sarvesh Murari camera work was appropriate for a mass entertainer. Tammi Raju’s editing was so sharp kicking the second half. Sai Kartheek finally got much needed recognition with musical score for songs and BGM was outstandingly reverberating. Production values of NTR Arts are above mediocre levels.

On performance front, NKR walked away with all applause. There was loads of confidence and esteem sensed in his body language. He is quite energetic in showcasing the ease with deadly action scenes, neat dance moves, emotional expressions and also timing the comic punches. In one line, it is a complete heroic display of NKR. Shruthi Sodhi had great body while her character wasn’t properly etched. Definitely, there was authenticity missing on NKR-Shruthi romantic track. Ashuthosh Rana is a mix of deadly villainy and a timely comic quotient. Sai Kumar is fine. Comedy batch of Srinivas Reddy, Shakalaka Shankar, Polu Srikanth Reddy entertained. MS Narayana ended his life making us laugh as Tsunami Subhash.  Posani's role as Central Minister reading Sumathi Shatakam was one of the best shot hilarious scenes in film. Of the rest, Kasi Vishwanath, Jhansi, Jayaprakash Reddy, Praveen, Raghu Nandan and others did their jobs.

Out of the Movie Patas: To begin with, Nandamuri family boosted the morals of their Fans with a celebrative start for New Year. ‘Patas’ has a hit verdict written everywhere. Anil Ravipudi has cent percent kept audience engaged with a lively and buoyant narrative required for a commercial mass flick. The way he embarks on story with Junior NTR voice over, Balakrishna visuals in ‘Arey O Samba,’ addition of ‘Seethayya’ clippings demonstrated his mass touch. 

If Anil managed a decent emotional connectivity with brother-sister and son-father sentiment in first half, he took to the complete cinematic freedom in second half with no subject. Total second half is deadly confrontation between hero and villain resembling that of Tamil director Hari (Singham series). Finally, climax was a bit weak compared to the par excellence showed in mid portions of second half. In total, ‘Patas’ is a feast for Nandamuri Fans. We are to witness biggest commercial hit for Kalyan Ram. Especially in lower class centers, it’s going to be a dream run. If support of Balakrishna and Junior NTR Fans is put together, ‘Patas’ might break a few records too.

"సరిలేరు నీకెవ్వరు" లాంటి బ్లాక్ బస్టర్ తర్వాత మహేశ్ బాబు, "గీతగోవిందం" లాంటి సూపర్ హిట్ తర్వాత దర్శకుడు పరశురాం కాంబినేషన్లో వచ్చిన ఈ సినిమాపై "కళావతి" పాట విడుదలైనప్పట్నుంచి అంచనాలు మొదలయ్యాయియి. ఆ అంచనాలు ట్రైలర్ విడుదల తర్వాత మరింత పెరిగాయి. 

దానికి తోడు ప్రధమార్థంలో 45 నిమిషాలు ప్రేక్షకుల్ని కట్టి పారేయడం ఖాయమని, అలాంటి ఎపిసోడ్ తన కెరీర్ మొత్తంలోనే చెయ్యలేదని మహేశ్ బాబు చెప్పడంతో ఎప్పుడెప్పుడు చూడాలా అన్న ఆసక్తి ఆడియన్సులో పెరిగింది. 

ఇంతకీ విషయంలోకి వెళితే ఇదొక వడ్డీవ్యాపారి కథ. 

"అప్పు లేని వాడు స్ట్రాంగ్. ఇచ్చిన అప్పును వెనక్కి రాబట్టుకునేవాడు ఇంకా స్ట్రాంగ్" అనే పాయింటులో రెండో వాక్యానికి సరిపోయే కథానాయకుడిగా మహేశ్ బాబు కనిపిస్తాడు. అమెరికాలో హ్యాండ్ లోన్స్ ఇస్తూ, తిరిగివ్వని వాళ్లని చితక్కొట్టేసి వసూలు చేసుకుంటూ ఉండే మహేశ్ కి ఒక ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ ఉంటుంది. దానికీ, ఒక సోషల్ కాజ్ కి ముడి పెట్టి రాసుకున్న కథ ఇది. 

నిజానికి పాయింట్ పరంగా పర్ఫెక్ట్. కథ పరంగా కూడా ఓకే. కానీ కథనం నడపడంలో చాలా తప్పులు జరిగాయి. ఎంత కమెర్షియల్ ఫార్మెట్ అయినా ప్రతిదానికి ఒక కొలతుంటుంది. అది తప్పితే మ్యాజిక్ మిస్సవుతుంది. అప్పుడు లాజిక్ లేనితనం కొట్టొచ్చినట్టు కనిపిస్తుంది. ఇక్కడదే జరిగింది. 

ప్రధమార్థం కామెడీ టచ్ తో సరదాగా నడిచింది. కానీ ఇది కథలో మెయిన్ పాయింట్ కాదు. ప్రధానపాత్రల మధ్య లవ్ ట్రాకే. అసలు పాయింట్ మొదలయ్యే సరికి కామెడీ నుంచి కథ సీరియస్ టోన్లోకి వెళ్తుంది. 

సముద్రఖని విశాఖలో ఒక బడా వ్యాపారి. రూలింగ్ పార్టీ ఎంపీ కూడా. ఢిల్లీలో పలుకుబడున్నవాడు. అంతవరకు బాగానే ఉంది. కానీ అదేంటో అమెరికా నుంచి కూతురు తను ట్రబుల్లో ఉన్నానని ఫోన్ చెయ్యగానే హెలికాప్టర్లో పోలీసులొచ్చి ఆ ట్రబుల్ చెస్తున్న హీరోకి గాల్లోంచే తుపాకులు గురి పెట్టేస్తారు. అంటే మన ఎంపీ గారి పవర్ అమెరికన్ పోలీసుల్ని కూడా పరుగెత్తించగలదన్నమాట. 

పెద్ద హీరో సినిమాని కమెర్షియల్ యాంగిల్లో చూడాలి కానీ లాజిక్కులు వెతక్కుండా చూద్దామన్నా బలం లేని సీన్లు పంటి కింద రాళ్లలాగ తగులుతుంటాయి. 

మాటలు రాసుకోవడంలో గానీ, రాయించుకోవడంలో కానీ దర్శకుడి తాలూకు అశ్రద్ధ కూడా కొంత కనిపించింది. 

ప్రధమార్థంలో హీరోయిన్ మొదట పదివేల డాలర్లు అప్పు తీసుకుని, తర్వాత పాతికవేలు కూడా తీసుకుంటుంది. అది చాలా స్పష్టంగా చూపించిన విషయం. అయితే తర్వాతంతా 10 వేల డాలర్లు తిరిగిచ్చేయమనే అడుగుతుంటాడు హీరో. ఇలా కంటిన్యుటీని డిస్టర్బ్ చేసే సీన్స్ వల్ల ఆడియన్స్ దర్శకుడిని తమ కన్నా తక్కువ స్థాయిలో చూస్తారు. దాంతో ఎంగేజ్ అవ్వకుండా తప్పులు వెతికే పనిలో పడుతాయి ఆడియన్స్ బ్రెయిన్స్. అందుకే, ఫ్లోలో పాసైపోతాయిలే అని ఇలాంటి తప్పుల్ని చేయకూడదు. 

"అప్పు చేసేటప్పుడు భయపడాలి. తీర్చేటప్పుడు గర్వపడాలి. మీరు భయం దగ్గరే ఆగిపోయారు" అంటాడు హీరో విలన్ తో ఒక సన్నివేశంలో. అసలా విలన్ ఎప్పుడు భయపడ్డాడనేది మొదటి ప్రశ్న. ఎగ్గొట్టే ఆలోచనతోటే తీసుకుంటాడు తప్ప ఎలా తీరుస్తానా అనే భయంతో కాదు కదా!

"సరిలేరు నీకెవ్వరు"లో ప్రకాష్ రాజ్ ని డిసిప్లిన్ లో పెట్టినట్టు, ఇక్కడ సముద్రఖనిని బాధ్యతాయుతమైన ఆడపిల్ల తండ్రిగా తీర్చిదిద్దడం హీరో లక్ష్యం. 

మరొక మైనస్ ఏంటంటే..పాత్రల్ని ప్రవేశపెట్టి వాటిని సరిగ్గా వాడుకోని తీరు. సత్యం రాజేష్ పాత్ర ఎంటరవుతుంది కానీ సరైన ఎగ్జిట్ లేదు. అలాగే తనికెళ్ల భరణి, నదియా పాత్రల బాధలు కంటికి కనపడవు. వాళ్లు చెబితే విని గుర్తుపెట్టుకోవాలి తప్ప ఆ పాత్రలతో జర్నీ లేదు. దానివల్ల ఎమోషన్ పండలేదు.

నెగటివ్స్ ముందు చెప్పేసుకున్నాం కాబట్టి ఇప్పుడు పాజిటివ్స్ మాట్లాడుకుందాం. 

ఇందులో ప్రధానంగా చెప్పుకోవల్సింది మహేశ్ బాబు పర్ఫార్మెన్స్, లుక్స్. తన కామెడీ టైమింగ్ కానీ, ఈజ్ కానీ నిజంగా కట్టిపారేస్తాయి. పాటల్లో వేసిన స్టెప్స్ కూడా కళ్లు తిప్పుకోనీయవు. కథనంలో ఒడిదుడుకులున్నా మహేశ్ బాబు పూర్తిగా తన భుజాలమీద సినిమాని మోసిన తీరు ప్రశంసనీయం. 

కీర్తి సురేష్ గురించి చెప్పక్కర్లేదు. ఈ జాతీయ అవార్డు నటికి ఈ మాత్రం క్యారెక్టర్ చేయడం విషయమేం కాదు. కానీ ఫస్టాఫులో ఉన్నంత స్కోప్ ఆమెకు సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లో లేదు.

తమన్ నేపథ్య సంగీతం కూడా చాలా గ్రిప్పింగ్ గా ఉంది. ఉన్న మూడు పాటలూ అలరిస్తాయి. మరీ ముఖ్యంగా "మ మ మహేశా..." మూస పద్ధతిలో ఉన్న కంపోజిషనే అయినా ఆకట్టుకుంది. కెమెరా వగైరా సాంకేతికాంశాల్ని వంక పెట్టలేం.

ఎక్కడా హెవీ కాకుండా లైటర్ వీన్ ట్రీట్మెంటు తో నడిపే ప్రయత్నం చేసాడు దర్శకుడు. అయినప్పటికీ అంచనాలు లేకుండా చూసినట్టైతే బాగానే అనిపించొచ్చు. కానీ మహేశ్ సినిమాని అంచనాల్లేకుండా చూడడం వీలౌతుందా? బాక్సాఫీస్ వద్ద ఈ సినిమా ఎలా పర్ఫార్మ్ చేస్తుందో వేచి చూడాలి.

technical aspects:-

The music is a big plus as all the songs are pretty good and they’ve also been shot pretty fancy. Sai Karthik’s background score is excellent and takes all the confrontation scenes to another level. the camera work is good and it shows the emotions well. the dialogues are perfect and fit the mood of the movie.

director anil ravipudi takes the cake in paws. it’s his brash storytelling that works magnificently for the film. From the beginning, he has made sure that there is enough fun and shows Kalyan Ram in a powerful role. the script is crisp and doesn’t leave much room for lag.

Overall, Patas is sure to end up as Kalyan Ram’s biggest hit to date. the powerful characterization of the hero and the enormous doses of entertainment at all times are the main assets of the film. all those who don’t mind the routine plot and are looking for pure fun, then this commercial potboiler shouldn’t be missed.

"Geetha Govindam" director Parasuram has successfully presented Mahesh Babu in a new avatar. It was evident in the trailer. The trailer was a roaring success.

Story: Mahi (Mahesh Babu), a private money lender in the USA, gives 10k dollars to the studious Kalaavathi (Keerthy Suresh) for her college fees, only to realize that she duped him. To recover the money from her father, he rushes to India. Her father turns out to be a businessman named Rajendra Nath (Samuthirakani) in the Vizag region, Mahi's hometown. Rajendra Nath also happens to be a person who owes Rs 10000 crores to banks.

The rest of the movie is all about Mahi fighting for a bigger social cause?

Artistes' Performances: Mahesh Babu carries the movie on his shoulders and tries to lift it when the graph goes down. With his histrionics and dialogues, Mahesh Babu has provided the required mojo. He looks stylish as well. Mahesh Babu's star power and his comic timing are the main strength of this film. 

Keerthy Suresh does her best in the first half. The scenes between Mahesh Babu and Keerthy are hilarious in the beginning. But she hardly appears in the second half, and when she does for a moment, she gets a cringe sequence.

Samuthirakani, who wowed with his villainy act in 'Krack' and 'AVPL', doesn't create much impact due to a weak character.

Vennela Kishore as Mahesh Babu's friend is okay. Subbaraju gets a formulaic character. Nadiya's role is hardly worth mentioning.

Technical Excellence: Thaman and R Madhie are the main pillars among the technicians. "Kalavaathi" and "Ma Ma Mahesha" stand out in Thaman's compositions. Madhie's camerawork has brought luminous texture.

Analysis: It has been a long time since Mahesh Babu played a role with a comic touch. "Sarkaru Vaari Paata", director Parasuram's first film with the superstar, puts him in this zone. Perhaps Mahesh Babu understood quite well that Parasuram had written a formulaic script that he needs to take charge of. He has put in the extra effort with his comic timing and histrionics to hold the movie.

After beginning the film with the hero's childhood episodes and establishing the reason for the hero becoming a money lender, the story cuts to a fun and entertaining romantic track.

For close to one hour, Mahesh Babu and Keerthy Suresh's sequences take place including the 'Kalavaathi' song. Remember that there are only two songs in the first half, and the rest of the drama completely relies on Keerthy Suresh and Mahesh Babu's love track.

"Sarkaru Vaari Paata" has a topical issue - loan defaults and bank scams. The bank officials seize the assets of the poor and the middle-class customers if they miss their EMIs. But they dare not touch the businessmen and the willful defaulters. The topic is relevant. And Parasuram has tried to give a commercial touch to this issue. The writer-director has chosen a tried and tested formula for commercial movies.

Parasuram is good at narrating films with a dose of entertainment. His mark is visible in the initial portions, but proved to be a let down in second half. 

The beginning of the film, the interval, and the climax are linked smartly. But he faltered in the crucial part of the final sequences. The director has taken too many cinematic liberties as well.

Director managed to keep the film largely entertaining, even during the slightly sluggish second half there are moments that hold the film tight. 

For a story dealing with bank loans and financial scams, it needed a far more convincing narrative. The forced comedy track involving Mahesh Babu, Subbaraju, and Keerthy Suresh in the second half is another black spot in the film.

The film lacks the required drama and emotional force in the penultimate sequences. Tanikella Bharani’s loan issue and Nadiya’s story don’t make us feel emotional.

Overall, “Sarkaru Vaari Paata” is a regular commercial movie made on a topical issue. The film entirely relies on Mahesh Babu’s star power and charisma and the superstar gives his best to hold the show. It is a typical mass entertainer with a mixed bag.
