Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Starting with the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) graduating class of 2002, the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library and YSM Office of Student Research have collaborated on the Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library (YMTDL) project, publishing the digitized full text of medical student theses on the web as a valuable byproduct of Yale student research efforts. The digital thesis deposit has been a graduation requirement since 2006. Starting in 2012, alumni of the Yale School of Medicine were invited to participate in the YMTDL project by granting scanning and hosting permission to the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, which digitized the Library’s print copy of their thesis or dissertation. A grant from the Arcadia Fund in 2017 provided the means for digitizing over 1,000 additional theses. What types of dissertations/theses can this template be used for?

The template follows the standard best-practice structure for formal academic research projects such as dissertations or theses, so it is suitable for the vast majority of degrees, particularly those within the sciences.

Some universities may have some additional requirements, but these are typically minor, with the core structure remaining the same. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to double-check your university’s requirements before you finalise your structure.

Is this template for an undergrad, Masters or PhD-level thesis?

This template can be used for a dissertation, thesis or research project at any level of study. It may be slight overkill for an undergraduate-level study, but it certainly won’t be missing anything.

How long should my dissertation/thesis be?

This depends entirely on your university’s specific requirements, so it’s best to check with them. As a general ballpark, Masters-level projects are usually 15,000 – 20,000 words in length, while Doctoral-level projects are often in excess of 60,000 words.

Writing a medical thesis: tips for post-graduate students.

What is a medical thesis?

A medical thesis is the written work resulting from an original research in the field of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and other health and life sciences. It is submitted by the students in order to obtain a higher degree from the University.

However, keep this in mind! The purpose of submitting a medical thesis is not limited to the achievement of a doctoral or post-graduate degree. It is a medium to organize the scientific knowledge in a way to make further progress in the field.

That’s the reason why the experts in  medical thesis writing  stress on the importance of choosing the right topic for your thesis. You must be able to address a genuine problem or series of problems through your medical thesis. Choose a topic that aligns with your interest and where you can offer a fresh perspective through your research study.

Writing your medical thesis

After choosing the topic for your research study, collaborate with your supervisor to design your research study and its goal. Collect all the information and data pertaining to your research before proceeding with your clinical trials.

Now, you are ready with your research data and clinical findings. You just need to pen down your findings in your medical thesis.

That sounds easy, isn’t it?

In reality, it’s not so. But, you need not worry!  Writing a medical thesis  becomes easy and fun if you follow the given steps with competence:

1.Outline the structure of medical thesis

Prepare an outline of the thesis in accordance with the following sections:

• Introduction: Why did you start your study?
• Methods Used
• Results of the study
• Discussion of results

List the major sections and chapters in each. Do a section at a time. Assemble all the figures and tables and organise them into a logical sequence.

2.Writing a title of the thesis

The title reflects the content of your thesis. For writing a perfect thesis title:

• Be concise and accurate. The title must neither be too long nor too short
• Avoid unnecessary words and phrases like “Observation of” or “A study of”
• Do not use abbreviations
• Avoid grammatical mistakes

3.Writing an Introduction

The purpose of writing an Introduction is to provide the reader with sufficient background information on the topic and help him understand and evaluate the results of the present study, without needing to refer to the previous publications on the topic.

• Give this background information in brief in the first paragraph
• Include the importance of the problem and what is unknown about it in the second paragraph
• State the purpose, hypothesis, and objective of your study in the last paragraph

Cite the research papers written on your research topic

• Include unnecessary information other than the problem being examined
• Include the research design, data or conclusion of your study
• Cite well-known facts
• Include information found in any textbook in the field

4.Writing the section of “Methods Used”

This section must be so written that the reader is able to repeat the study and validate its findings.

Write a detailed exposition about the participants in the study, what materials you used and how you analyzed the results

• Give references but no description for established methods
• Give a brief description and references for published but lesser known methods
• Give detailed description of new methods citing the reasons for using them and any limitations if present
• Include background information and results of the study
• Refer to animals and patients as material
• Use trade name of the drugs; instead, use their generic names
• Use non-technical language for technical statistical terms

5.Writing your Results

Keep in mind the objective of your research while writing the “Results” section. The findings of the research can be documented in the form of:

• Illustrative graphs

Use text to summarize small amounts of data. Do not over-use tables, figures, and graphs in your paper. Moreover, do not repeat information presented in the table or figure in the text format. Text must be a summary or highlight of the information presented in tables or figures.

6.Discussing your Results

Good medical theses have a targeted discussion keeping it focused on the topic of the research. Include:

• Statement of the principal findings. Make it clear to show that your thesis includes new information
• Strengths and weaknesses of your study
• Strengths and weaknesses in relation to the other studies
• A take-home message from your study for clinicians and policymakers
• Any questions that are left unanswered in your study to propose new research

How to conclude your medical thesis?

The conclusion of your research study must comprise of:

• The most important statement or remark from the observations
• Summary of new observations, interpretations, and insights from the present study
• How your study fills the knowledge gap in its respected field?
• The broader implications of your work
• How can your work be improved by future research?

However, avoid any statement that does not support your data.

Being vertically integrated, InterCure and its subsidiaries are involved in producing, manufacturing and distributing cannabis-based, GMP-compatible products. The company holds a license in Israel, where the market has been regulated since 2008 and aspires to become a global leader as long as certain states permit the distribution of its products.

InterCure's largest production facility (southern facility) is located in Nir Oz Kibbutz near the Gaza Strip border; it is currently only partially accessible for operations because IDF use parts of the site . InterCure distributes its products through a network of 24 pharmacies (plus 5 more licence-pending) while holding agreements to form joint ventures with producers and suppliers in the EU and Canada in the future, depending on regulations and demand from certain states. In Germany, from 04/01/2024, the CannG Cannabis Act is in effect . Regarding FY 2023 ER, there was a 9% decline in revenue and a decline in EBITDA compared to 2022, however, considering the state of war in Israel and the impact that this condition had on InterCure 2023 ER should be regarded as positive. FY 2023 revenue and EBITDA also exceeded the company's preliminary estimates .

Finally, it should be mentioned that the company has been involved in legal action with Cannolam minority shareholders and Cann Pharmaceuticals . The Cannolam case ended in favour of InterCure which now holds 100% of the shares in Cannolam. Year after year, the use of pharmaceutical/medical cannabis gains more supporters and more countries are getting prepared to pass relative legislation. Germany recently removed cannabis from the list of narcotics and in the US the rescheduling is expected in the coming months. More states will likely follow, boosting the TAM in the coming years. According to a Grand View Research analysis , the 2023 market size was estimated at ~$3.4B, while a CAGR of 53.3% to 2030 is expected. While this number may seem exaggerated, it shows a potential for excessive industry growth. Thus, a bright future is unfolding for the industry and InterCure, an industry-leading company, will certainly benefit from that.

2023 was a year that brought many challenges for InterCure. While the stock has been suffering for some time, after the Hamas attack the sell-off brought it to an all-time low at $1. Following these events, the market started reflecting that the worst was back and acknowledging that InterCure was undervalued; the stock recovered to $3.73. InterCure presents a 0.98 P/S (TTM) ratio compared to 3.55 of the pharmaceuticals sector median. Taking a conservative approach, considering the pharmaceutical cannabis industry, certain peers, and risks, InterCure should have been trading closer to a 2 P/S (TTM). In other words, it could justify a price close to $4 per share in 2024 if the state of war in Israel gradually de-escalates.

Looking deeper into the future, a 53.3% pharmaceutical cannabis industry CAGR may seem overconfident for some, despite the industry being in its early growth stages. Thus, three more conservative scenarios will be presented on the path to 2030 assuming a P/S = 2 valuation.

Trading at a $96M valuation now, well under its book value, shows InterCure's poor valuation and unveils a potentially compelling opportunity for investors to multiply the invested capital in the future.

Innovation Sustainability Growth

• An unexpected risk until recently, the Hamas attack and the state of war that followed in Israel has already impacted InterCure's southern facility and its operations. While this condition is expected to de-escalate, and the company has full support from the state of Israel, it should still be considered a volatile situation.
• Another major risk is the possible delays in cannabis-related legislation approval by certain states. Conservative and far-right parties seem to have gained momentum in the recent EU elections, and that could prove an obstacle for further cannabis legalization.
• Finally, the company could present slower growth and lower profit margins than expected, competitors could gain larger-than-expected market share, new players could appear, and its international expansion plans may be delayed.

Wrapping it all up, InterCure is a profitable growth pharmaceutical/medical cannabis company and one of a few that managed to grow its business in tandem with a healthy balance sheet and strong results. Despite the state of war in Israel and the damage that was caused, the company seems to have a bright future to lead in an industry that has just begun its rapid growth. Expected patients and demand increase in Israel, the fresh Cannabis Act in Germany, and the Cannabis Rescheduling in the US, all signal a trend in favour of Cannabis and InterCure seems ready to move and seize the opportunity. Zuanic and Associates (Pablo Zuanic is a known cannabis analyst) recently initiated an overweight-rated coverage on InterCure and published their analysis . Considering the current conditions, a stock price exceeding $3 reflected a quite fair valuation for the company; this was why I sold 50% of my position (initiated at ~$1.60) for an over 100% profit during the recent rally at ~$3.40. Now that a stock price correction is underway, it is time to seek momentum to increase my position again, and so should investors interested in InterCure, anticipating to multiply the invested capital in the long run.

Constraining Explosion Physics and Progenitors of Transients via Statistical Inferencing of All Sky Survey Data Streams

Advancements in astronomical imaging all-sky surveys are revolutionising the field of time domain astronomy. However, the immense volume of alert data presents a critical bottleneck in maximizing scientific returns from these surveys. Effectively analyzing alert streams to discover transients in unexplored physical parameter spaces is crucial for enhancing scientific output. Building robust infrastructure to identify, prioritize, and execute efficient follow-up strategies on alert streams from all-sky surveys becomes critical. My thesis confronts this challenge through a multidisciplinary approach, by integrating statistical methods, machine learning algorithms, and hydrodynamical simulations to constrain transient explosion properties and motivate effective follow-up initiatives.

I analyze a sample of 45 Type II supernovae from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) public survey using a grid of hydrodynamical models in order to assess whether theoretically driven forecasts can intelligently guide follow-up observations supporting all-sky survey alert streams. I estimate several progenitor properties and explosion physics parameters, including zero-age main-sequence (ZAMS) mass, mass-loss rate, kinetic energy, 56 Ni mass synthesized, host extinction, and the time of the explosion. This work involves simulations of real-time of evolving incomplete light curves of the sample (∆t < 25 days, ∆t < 50 days, all data) leading to the conclusion that certain physical parameters exhibit greater reliability as indicators of true values during early epochs. This study emphasises the vital role of real-time modeling of transients, supported by multi-band synthetic light curves tailored to survey passbands, for identifying interesting transients based on their progenitor and explosion properties and determining critical epochs for follow-up observations.

In my thesis, I report multi wavelength observations and characterization of the ultraluminous transient AT 2021lwx (ZTF20abrbeie; aka“Barbie”) identified in the ZTF alert stream, that was flagged as an anomaly by the Recommender Engine For Intelligent Transient Track-ing (REFITT). From a spectroscopically measured redshift of 0.9945, and slowly fading g and r light curves spanning over 1000 observer-frame days that peak with an absolute magnitude of Mr = −25.7 mag, AT 2021lwx has an extraordinary peak pseudo-bolometric luminosity of log (Lmax/[erg/s]) = 45.7. The total radiative energy is over 10 53 erg, and as of today, the transient continues to decline slowly following a t −5/3 power-law. Modeling available photometry with MOSFiT suggests that AT 2021lwx is a tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate involving a ≈ 14 or 15 solar mass star accreting onto a supermassive black hole (SMBH) with mass M BH ≈ 10 8 solar mass. But, intriguingly, no host galaxy associated with the theorized SMBH is detected yet. The Pan-STARRS non-detections do not definitively exclude the existence of a galaxy hosting AT 2021lwx. Utilizing EzGal, upper limits on the stellar mass for different stellar population models were determined. These upper limits suggest that a 10 10 solar mass host galaxy cannot be ruled out.

The enhanced sensitivity of upcoming large-scale all-sky surveys enables the early detection of transients, providing unique insights into their progenitor systems, an example being detection of shock cooling emission (SCE) in light curves of stripped-envelope supernovae(SESNe). Leveraging a statistically significant sample of these events with early detections from all-sky surveys presents an invaluable opportunity to constrain their environments, pro-genitors, and explosion properties. In my final study contributing to this thesis, I analyze a sample of 16 SESNe identified from the ZTF survey, characterised by prominent shock cooling emission features in their light curves. By modeling the SCE and the radioactive peak in these transients, I derive estimates of progenitor radius, mass of the extended envelope and explosion properties of SESNe. This analysis yields upper limits and ranges for the compactness and envelope structures of the SESN progenitors that exhibit SCE in their light curves. I conclude my thesis with a summary of the findings and their future applications.
