Boston College rallied from a 6-0 first quarter deficit to win the game. Kayla Martello led the second quarter rally with four of her game-leading five goals, and overall, four Eagles scored multiple goals. Defensively, sophomore goalie Shea Dolce stepped up huge after a rough opening to the game, finishing with nine saves. When Dolce wasn't stopping shots on goal, she was jump-starting transition attempts, pushing the ball down field. It was an impressive effort from the team as a whole, never giving up despite trailing for the first three quarters.

In the win, the Eagles avenged its title game loss to Northwestern last year (2023) and avoided losing three straight national championships (lost to North Carolina in 2022). It's a bookend championship for Boston College's seniors, previously winning the national title in 2021. Harvey Mudd produces a ton of math PhDs for its size. I'd guess Swarthmore, Pomona, Carleton are all very high too. If you look at schools that have students that excel at the Putnam competition for their size, that's probably a reasonable list. What are the feeder schools for top 5-10 math phd programs other than the HYPSM and UChicago/Caltech ...
CMU and UT Austin are well ranked, but it is also true that their overall reputation (rankings, brand power, etc.) is not up to par with MIT, Harvard, etc. Of course, overall reputation are largely subjective and due to historical reasons, but that doesn't change anything. CMU and UT Austin are not low-ranking schools, but they are one level ...
The AMS says there were 1960 new PhD's in math in the period 2017-2018. There are only about 5300 colleges and universities in the US, and many of those are colleges that won't teach classes beyond calculus 3, differential equations, and linear algebra, if they teach those. Some only teach up to calculus 1.
Zophike1. •. At a top university, certainly. If you want to be a tenured professor at a decent institution that isn't a "top" university, then it's still possible with a PhD from a lower tier university. But it takes several postdocs, and a good deal of luck.
You don't need to go to Princeton, Berkeley, MIT etc as an undergrad to get into those programs for a PhD. Just make sure you really build relationships with your math professors and go very deep into your coursework. They can quite easily sniff out students who have PhD potential. 2. Reply.
HYPSM isn't as relevant for graduate schools. Many of the top ranked math PhD programs are not ivies. Your undergrad institution won't matter so much as long as you do good research and take rigorous classes. I went from an undergrad institution ranking of (90) to a graduate school institution in top 20.

I would recommend to look into our operations research masters and phd programs at Georgia Tech ISyE. No other school has a higher concentration of faculty whose primary research interests are centered in optimization theory and methods. Also, search for the MIT Operations Research Center (ORC), UC Berkeley IEOR, Cornell, and Stanford.

I'm a PhD student in Mathematics studying Complex Geometry, and I'm curious if any types of more "pure" mathematics are used successfully in the field, such as Measure Theory, Lie Algebra, or Differential Geometry (to a lesser extent). In my experience people who have a PhD in math don't know the history of all mathematics that well. We only know the history of (modern techniques in) our little area well. For my opinion, I find it impossible to rate anything amongst people that were not peers in the exact same generation. This goes for math, basketball, music, etc.
