The Sociological Imagination of SEK Mqhayi: Towards an African Sociology (M.Phil Thesis)

What areas of social life do our existing social theories allow us to understand, and what areas of society leave us baffled, unsettled and unable to respond? This paper will argue that we are in need of new interpretive tools to allow us to understand the areas of our social world that have previously been excluded from academic view by our colonial and apartheid history, and even by progressive liberal and Marxist responses to apartheid. By first surveying the intellectual history of sociology’s emergence as a discipline and its formations in South Africa, I will argue that we are unable to effectively think about large areas of the African cultural and social world within our society. In search of alternatives this paper will explore the work of the prolific early 20th c. intellectual, S.E.K. Mqhayi. Mqhayi was a product of the complex social hybridity of his time, but oriented this hybridity towards amaXhosa and African people. By looking at his various mediums of writing I will argue that Mqhayi offers powerful insight into the complexities of the changing social world of his time and that his methodologies—so different from those of academic sociology—give us powerful insights into an African tradition which can revitalise contemporary social inquiry.

This paper critiques the limitations of the traditional sociological canon, which centers on Western thinkers like Marx, Weber, and Durkheim. It argues for a more inclusive canon that reflects the unique social realities of Africa, often termed the "African condition." By drawing on post-colonial and postmodern insights, the paper exposes the exclusionary nature of the current canon and the unequal power dynamics in knowledge production between the West and Africa. This critique paves the way for incorporating historically marginalised scholars whose works hold immense value for understanding Africa. The paper proposes including figures like Ibn Khaldun, an Arab sociologist who pre-dated Western scholars, Harriet Martineau, a feminist who analysed colonial impacts, W.E.B. Du Bois, a pioneering African American sociologist, and Michel Foucault, whose theories on power are highly relevant to African contexts. Broadening the canon fosters a more credible and reflexive sociology that acknowledges diverse perspectives and lived experiences. This enriched understanding is crucial for African studies and for global understanding of social phenomena.

As the coherence and legitimacy of the ‘development’ project seems to be increasingly under threat, it has been reaching out for alternative theoretical foundations upon which to base its practices. The reach towards historical sociology is understandable but ultimately politically and practically problematic in a postcolonial age. This is because the assumptions, structure, logic and grammar of historical sociology build in a norm of capitalist development as theorised by Marx and Weber, despite recent efforts to counter its provincial origins. Debates of course do not take place in a political vacuum and reproduce the developmental presumption that what matters ‐ analytically and politically ‐ for Africa is the achievement of ‘modernity’ by ‘development’. I suggest the contestable assumptions of time, history and the notion of modernity itself in historical sociology must lead us to re-evaluate the limitations of it as a way framing the world, as well as the notions of development...

Sociology in South Africa has very problematic beginnings. It was born as the conjoined twin of social work which was destined to inform the racist policies of apartheid until its functionalist roots were later be dug up by the rise of a new left which privileged class analysis by way of orthodox Marxism. Post-apartheid, sociology is left handicapped by the blinders of a Marxist 'economism' which undermines culture in its analysis, treating it as dependent and derivative of the base instead of operating autonomously from such conditions. By relooking at Gramsci's critique of Marx and more contemporary sociologists like Stuart Hall, Jeffrey Alexander and Cornel West, this paper argues that a sociology in South Africa must take seriously culture (broadly defined) as an independent variable in sociological analysis. Inroads to this treatment of culture was made by black consciousness thinker Steve Biko's and his recount of African history. This paper moves us into the direction of a decolonialised sociology. It is a starting point which prompts us to rethink the contributions of non-white intellectuals of the past and urges us to realize the possibility of a South African cultural sociology .
